Big Ten in updated Coaches Poll, AP Top 25
Over the past several months, a handful of contenders have emerged as the Big Ten’s best hopes for its first men’s basketball national championship team since 2000.
The program that won that now-25-year-old title, Michigan State, is one of them, with a surprising 18-3 record. Purdue isn’t quite where it was last season with Zach Edey, but it’s not terribly far off with Braden Smith leading the way. Wisconsin, with a potent and shockingly fast-paced offense, is excelling. Newcomers Oregon and UCLA have turned heads. Few teams in the country are playing better than Maryland right now. And Michigan, behind a pair of versatile 7-footers, has impressed in its first season under Dusty May.
The past week included some notable results that shape both the conference and national landscape. Tom Izzo’s Spartans saw their 13-game win streak come to an end in a loss at USC. Maryland knocked off Wisconsin 76-58. UCLA blew out Oregon 78-52. Purdue held off archrival Indiana 81-76.

#Big #Ten #updated #Coaches #Poll #TopWomen’s College Basketball Rankings: AP Poll Top 25 updated to start February
February is here and with that the women’s college basketball season is entering one of the most important periods of the regular season as conference championship races heat up. With that, the AP Top 25 Poll has once again been updated with the latest results in mind.
Conference play is in full swing and, with that, the race for the top of the standings in the regular season is heating up. At this point, there are only so many opportunities to make a move or risk not having enough time to get to the top of their respective conference standings. That also means that teams are jockeying for position in their future conference tournament seeding.
With all of that in mind, here’s a look at the updated AP Top 25 Poll in women’s college basketball for the first week of February.
The UCLA Bruins march on with their undefeated season. Since the last AP Poll came out, the Bruins only had one game, a Big Ten battle against Minnesota that saw the Golden Gophers hang around for a half before the Bruins pulled away to win by 26 points. That improved UCLA to 22-0.
On Wednesday, UCLA is in for a major test when they host the Ohio State Buckeyes. That should, on paper, be the start of the toughest stretch of the season for UCLA. With eight total games remaining, four of those are against ranked teams including two against USC before the season comes to an end.
Jan 9, 2025; Columbia, South Carolina, USA; South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley directs her team against the Texas A&M Aggies in the first half at Colonial Life Arena. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Blake-Imagn Images In SEC play, South Carolina has once again been dominant and their only loss this season remains against UCLA in non-conference play. In the last week, that saw the Gamecocks win a pair of games, starting with a hard-fought win against Tennessee, before returning home for a double-digit win against Auburn.
In this next week, South Carolina is going to hit the road for a pair of tests. First, the Gamecocks are set to travel to play Georgia on the road. That could become a trap because, at the end of the week, they’ll travel to Austin for one of the biggest games of the season against Texas.
Since Notre Dame stumbled in late November in non-conference play, the Irish have been dominant. That has seen them become the frontrunner in the ACC throughout the season and that continued with a pair of double-digit road wins against Virginia Tech and Louisville.
Now considered one of the best teams in the country by the AP Poll, Notre Dame has a target on its back moving forward this season. Of course, the schedule also doesn’t get easier from here. Notre Dame will return home next week before hosting a pair of West Coast schools, hosting Stanford and Cal.
The Texas Longhorns have now won six games in a row since dropping a road test against South Carolina in the middle of January. Last week, that included wins over Missouri and Texas A&M. That win over the Aggies was especially sweet.
The schedule gets tougher next week with some AP-ranked opponents coming up. First, Texas will need to stay focused on Thursday when they take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. Otherwise, they could easily get trapped looking ahead to South Carolina coming to town on Sunday for a rematch.
© Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports All the UConn Huskies do in Big East play is win. The last time they had a game that was less than a double-digit win was back in December when they suffered a two-point loss to USC. Last week, for the Huskies, it was a pair of blowout wins over DePaul and Butler consecutively.
Next week, UConn has an interesting test to look ahead to, and it’s not in the Big East. Next Thursday, the Huskies have an interesting test against Tennessee, in a classic women’s basketball matchup. After that, it’s back to Big East play against Providence.
The LSU Tigers seem to have fully bounced back from their loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks with a run of three wins in a row. That included a close win over Oklahoma where the score went on to be 107-100 last Thursday. The Tigers would then follow up with a double-digit win over Mississippi State.
Next week, LSU hits the road for a game against Missouri. After that, they’ll enter one of their toughest stretches of the season, playing teams who either are ranked in the AP Poll or were recently ranked in the AP Poll in four of the next five games, starting with Tennessee.
The USC Trojans stumbled in their second game of the week, dropping a road game against Iowa in front of an emotionally charged crowd. In particular, a four-point first quarter was costly and put a damper on their win over Minnesota earlier in the week. It also cost the Trojans in the AP Poll.
Things aren’t going to get any easier for USC from here in Big Ten play. Next week, the Trojans are set to take on Wisconsin and Ohio State. They’ll need to maintain focus too because UCLA is just around the corner the week after that set of tough games and a loss there would put USC behind the eight-ball in a tough Big Ten.
Ohio State forward Cotie McMahon celebrates a win over Maryland during the 2023-24 season. (Barbara J. Perenic/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK) Since getting upset by Penn State in January, Ohio State has bounced back with three straight wins and is now ranked in the Top 10 of the AP Poll again. Only one of those games came since the last AP Poll came out, a 10-point game against Washington. That has left them tied for second in the Big Ten standings.
From here, however, Ohio State is really going to get tested by Big Ten play. On Wednesday, the Buckeyes are on the road against UCLA. After that, they’ll stick in Los Angeles for another road test against USC. That could make for a potentially make or break week for the Buckeyes as it relates to their regular season hopes in conference play.
Since their one-point upset loss to a tough Oklahoma State team, TCU has bounced back in a fairly major way. They’ve added wins against Baylor and Iowa State, both of whom are competitive in the Big 12, and now they’re back at the top of the conference standings and are highly ranked in the AP Poll.
Next week has maybe the biggest game of the season for TCU. The Horned Frogs are set to take on Kansas State on Wednesday. Another highly ranked team, the two seem to be the top two competitors in the Big 12 and, with that, the game is going to put someone in the driver’s seat. From there, TCU needs to avoid upsets, starting with Texas Tech at the end of the week.
The Duke Blue Devils had an interesting week in the middle of the season and conference play. They didn’t play a single game. Beating Georgia Tech last Sunday helped the Blue Devils get into the AP Top 10 at the time, but they haven’t played a game since the last poll came out.
Now, Duke is getting ready for a tough game on Monday night when they travel to rival NC State. From there, they’ll play a back-to-back against Clemson before adding another game on Sunday against Miami. That should, in part, make up for the week off that Duke had to try and hit the reset button with.

(This story was updated with new information)
With the Big Ten regular season just about at its halfway point, Michigan State looks to be on pace for its first conference regular season title in four years.
In its lone game of the week, Tom Izzo’s seventh-ranked Spartans (17-2, 8-0 in Big Ten) kept alive their undefeated start to conference play with an 81-74 win over Rutgers at Madison Square Garden in New York. It’s the 12th consecutive win for Michigan State, and their best start in Big Ten play since 2018-2019.

Speaking of Purdue, the Boilermakers split the week 1-1 at Mackey Arena with a loss to Ohio State and a win over then-No. 21 Michigan. Purdue senior guard Braden Smith finished three rebounds shy of recording a triple-double in the Boilermakers’ 91-64 romp over the Wolverines, who split last week’s games with an 80-76 overtime win vs. Northwestern.
Wisconsin appears to be back on track after a rocky December start to Big Ten play, as the Badgers defeated Nebraska 83-55 on Sunday at the Kohl Center for their eighth win in their last nine contests.

Stephanie McMahon Working On New WWE Project (Updated)
Stephanie McMahon is getting back into the WWE fold with a new project.
PWInsider.com is reporting that McMahon is working on a new project for WWE. The untitled project was described as a pro wrestling equivalent to ESPN’s Peyton’s Places series. The ESPN show features Peyton Manning discussing key moments in NFL history with other NFL stars and personalities.
The show will feature Stephanie reflecting on WWE’s biggest moments with other notable figures from the pro wrestling world. PWInsider reports that McMahon has already filmed content for the show and spoke with many names, including Cody Rhodes and Steve Austin.
Stephanie’s new show is still in progress, and no timeline or release date was revealed. The project was announced during a WWE employee and talent town hall meeting on Wednesday. This meeting is also the same one where Triple H was surprised with a WWE Hall Of Fame induction announcement.
Stephanie McMahon stepped down from her role as WWE Chairwoman and Co-CEO in January 2023. This coincided with her father, Vince McMahon, returning to the promotion. Vince has since stepped down due to the sexual assault allegations against him.
Since that time, Stephanie has sporadically appeared on WWE programming. She was at WrestleMania 40, and has been shown on camera sitting ringside at other WWE events.
UPDATE: WWE has released the first trailer for “Stephanie’s Places” online. The series will premiere on ESPN+ in March:
Triple H: Stephanie McMahon Will Always Have A Passion For This
Stephanie McMahon will always have a passion for WWE, but she has enjoyed spending time with her children. Triple H was asked if Stephanie would return to WWE during an appearance on SI Media with Jimmy Traina.
“I would love to see her back. Here’s the thing with her. [She] stepped away. Our kids are at an age [with] one in college and over the next four years, the rest will be in college. We have three girls, so it’s a very formidable time. And a time for her where she’s really enjoying having some downtime. She’s busy, she has a lot of passions, and pediatric cancer is a big thing for her, she’s doing some stuff. She’s still up to speed on a lot of the stuff we’re doing and clearly has her takes and opinions on things and it’s wonderful when she can be around.”
“I think she’ll always have a passion for this,” he said. “Whether she decides to come in and do some stuff, I think she weighs that on her mind all the time. But it’s the, ‘I want to do that, but I don’t want to give up all this time with my kids that I never give back again.’ What’s that saying, you spend 80% of your time you’ll ever spend with your kids until they turn 18, and then it’s over. Very aware of that, and she’s enjoying her time with them, very much so. Giving that up would be a tough push for her right now, but again, you’ll see her again. Maybe at [WWE Raw on] Netflix.”

A soon-to-expand prohibition on nursing homes’ use of third-party financial guarantees could lead to more operators using lawsuits to collect as residents’ unpaid debt becomes a bigger financial concern.
That warning comes as regulators move to target admission and billing policies that mimic financial guarantees — even if they don’t technically require third-parties to “guarantee” they’ll pay for a friend, family member or other associate’s stay.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has long forbidden the use of such third-party guarantees in nursing homes. But the agency now wants surveyors to scrutinize compliance more intensely, possibly further impeding collections related to care already delivered.
New CMS guidance on the issue is scheduled to go into effect March 24.
More restrictions on the ability of facilities to secure third-party guarantees to defray financial risk “creates a very tricky situation,” Callan Stein, a partner with Troutman Pepper Locke, told McKnight’s Long-Term Care News Monday.
“It is becoming harder and harder for facilities to mitigate the risk of resident payment shortfalls. As a result of this, we may come to see more frequent legal collection actions by nursing homes, for example, against the estate of a resident who passes away with a large outstanding balance owed,” he added. “It would also not be surprising to see nursing homes more frequently writing off bad debt, as permitted, for tax benefits.”
Under the expanded CMS interpretation, any language that seeks to hold someone beside the resident personally responsible could be problematic. And nowhere does the word “guarantee” need to appear to land a provider in regulatory hot water.
“Language can be noncompliant even if it does not specifically reference a ‘guarantee’ by a third party. Any language contained in an agreement that seeks to hold a third party personally responsible for paying the facility would violate this requirement,” CMS wrote in its update.
The guidance also now includes specific examples of noncompliance. Those include:
• Language that holds both the resident and the representative or other individual jointly responsible for any sums due to the facility;
• Language that holds the representative or other third-party personally liable for breach of any obligation in the agreement, such as failing to fully complete a Medicaid application on time;
• Language that implies the resident could be discharged if the representative does not voluntarily agree to personally pay to prevent the discharge; and
• Language that holds the representative personally liable for any amounts not paid to the facility in a timely manner because the representative or other individual did not provide accurate financial information or notify the facility of changes in the resident’s financial information.
Also of note: CMS said such language is noncompliant if it appears in the main document that a facility uses as its admission agreement or in other documents that are signed at admission. In addition, a facility cannot use financial guarantees in agreements regarding a resident’s continued stay.
Cosigning for healthcare?
Facilities can continue to “request and require a resident representative who has legal access to a resident’s income” to sign a contract saying they will use that resource to pay for care, without incurring personal financial liability.
But the updated guidance also explicitly prohibits the facility from making that request if an individual “does not actually have legal access to the resident’s funds.”
“The distinction makes sense because it’s not fair to expect someone to cosign. How much are they potentially liable for? We’re talking about nursing home expenses,” Eric Carlson, director of long-term services and supports advocacy at Justice in Aging, said during a Wednesday webinar on the new guidance.
“If you cosign for a car, you know what you’re responsible for: whatever the price of the car is. But if you cosign on a nursing facility admission agreement, what’s the bill going to be? $10,000, $50,000? You see bills of this size, and a third party shouldn’t be stuck with financial obligations like that,” he added.
The expanded CMS interpretation aligns with other measures by the federal government that have limited long-term care providers’ ability to collect payment for services.
In 2022, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra encouraged families to file complaints with his agency and at the state level. Chopra also asked nursing homes to “confidentially inform” state or federal enforcement agencies about the illegal practices of others to help “address the range of harms associated with medical debt.”
Early this month, Chopra’s agency finalized a rule removing about $49 billion in medical bills from Americans’ credit reports and banned the inclusion of medical bills on credit reports. The move is seen as limiting healthcare providers’ ability to collect on some debt, given fewer implications on borrowers’ credit scores.
More legal efforts ahead?
The latest pressure from CMS is unlikely to help, Stein said.
“Often, when a resident builds up a large outstanding balance, the facility is faced with the Hobson’s choice of either taking steps to try to help the resident transfer out of the facility or continuing to allow the resident to incur debt that may be unrecoverable, especially if the resident is in poor health or passes away suddenly,” he said.
He recommended that nursing homes enhance their initial resident screening processes to evaluate the ability of patients to pay and to develop and uniformly implement robust revenue cycle procedures to stay on top of billing.
“It may also be that some facilities begin to take a more aggressive approach during resident onboarding, for example by requiring residents to pay a security deposit or commit other security interests to cover unpaid balances,” Stein added. “This is not a trend we have seen utilized much to date, and facilities should very carefully consider such a requirement and discuss it with legal counsel before any implementation.”
While CMS is clear that deposits can be charged to non-Medicaid residents prior to admission, courts have been split on nursing homes’ ability to chase debt after a stay has started.
Consumer advocate Carlson said he’s seen some nursing homes turn to lawsuits to go after a “responsible party,” which was seen as triggering the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s involvement on the issue.
“Assuming down the road the bill isn’t paid, then the nursing facility files suit against the third party … and says in [the nursing home’s] defense, well, this isn’t a cosigner,” Carlson said. “What we’re doing is we’re suing the adult daughter, let’s say, for her breach of the admission agreement. She was obligated to pay us, to use the resident’s money to pay us or to make sure that there was Medicaid eligibility, and that didn’t happen.”
Carlson said that using the courts to achieve the same goal as activities protected by the ban on third-party guarantees has led to a mixed bag of legal decisions; only some cases end up tossed. Surveyors weeding out some of those tactics upfront could help address what he calls “a bad state of affairs.”
“Nursing facilities are trying to sneak around the federal law, and the federal government here is saying, ‘No, that’s not going to work,’” he said. “‘We’re going to consider this non-compliant.’”
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently issued updated guidance targeting nursing homes’ third-party pay policies. This new guidance aims to crack down on facilities that may be taking advantage of third-party pay sources, such as private insurance or Medicare Advantage plans, at the expense of residents.CMS has stated that nursing homes must ensure that residents are not being improperly charged for services covered by third-party payers. This includes making sure that residents are not billed for services that are covered under their insurance plans or Medicare benefits.
Facilities are also being reminded that they must accurately report their residents’ insurance information to CMS in order to receive proper reimbursement for services provided. Failure to do so could result in penalties or even loss of participation in Medicare and Medicaid programs.
This updated guidance comes as part of CMS’s ongoing efforts to improve transparency and accountability in the nursing home industry. By cracking down on improper billing practices and ensuring that residents receive the care they are entitled to, CMS is working to protect some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
Nursing homes that are found to be in violation of these policies may face fines, sanctions, or even closure. It is crucial that facilities review their third-party pay policies and ensure that they are in compliance with CMS guidelines to avoid any potential repercussions.
Overall, this updated guidance serves as a reminder to nursing homes that they must prioritize the well-being of their residents above all else. By following CMS’s regulations and guidelines, facilities can ensure that they are providing high-quality care to those who need it most.

Battlefield, FIFA/EA Sports FC Games Offline as EA Servers Crash (Updated)
Generate Key TakeawaysUpdate: Service has now been restored.
Original story follows…
A number of EA games including the Battlefield and FIFA/EA Sports FC franchises have gone offline due to servers crashing. Reports of players not being able to connect to EA Online started trickling in several hours ago on Sunday morning, with most of the complaints coming from Battlefield players.
EA Online servers down: Which games are affected?
I first noticed the issue when I tried logging into Battlefield V (great game, by the way, and super cheap in the latest PS Store sale). I was met with a message telling me that I “failed to connect to EA Online.” Having searched the web, it appears that all Battlefield games including Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 2042 are being hit with the same message at the time of this writing.
According to some reports, FIFA/EA Sports FC games are also experiencing issues with online connectivity. I haven’t spotted any reports of connectivity issues with Apex Legends or EA’s other sports franchises yet. However, if you’re unable to connect to EA’s servers all of a sudden, rest assured it’s not your internet connection that’s the problem.
It’s unfortunate that servers went down on a Sunday morning. EA has yet to acknowledge the issue, and there’s no ETA for a fix. We’ll update this article when EA Online is actually online again.
