  • Kessler & Collins Status Updates

The Utah Jazz come back home to host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday evening. Both teams have key contributors whose status is in question.

Johnny Juzang and John Collins (illness) are questionable, while Cody Williams (ankle) is out. As for the Timberwolves, Naz Reid (illness), Donte DiVincenzo (toe), and Terrance Shannon (foot) are out. Starters Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler are available.

The Jazz have been all in on the tank in year three of their rebuild. However, if there’s a game this season in which they’re going to want to win, this is the one. The Timberwolves are flirting with the possibility of entering the 2025 lottery, and Utah is in possession of their first-round pick.

Where it stands entering tonight’s game, the Timberwolves are the sixth seed and would need to qualify for postseason play via the play-in tournament. They’re also only two games removed from missing the play-in tournament altogether.

On the other hand, the Jazz are trending in a completely different direction. Utah has a loose grip on the second-best lottery odds. The Jazz are ½ removed from the three spot and 2.5 games from four. Utah has lost its last 11 out of 12 games and seven in a row.

This will be the first time the two franchises face each other this year, but not the last. After tonight’s contest, the Jazz will play the Timberwolves three more times this season. The tip-off tonight is at 7:00 pm MT.

  • Live updates: Washington Capitals vs Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre

The end of the Washington Capitals’ season-long road trip is night. Tonight, the Capitals will take on the Ottawa Senators north of the border, looking to win four of five during their difficult stretch away from home.

The last time the Capitals played Ottawa, two weeks ago, Alex Ovechkin scored the only goal in overtime to give the Capitals a thrilling 1-0 win. Tonight, the goalies that sat out that night, Charlie Lindgren and Antom Forsberg, will suit up and oppose each other.

The Capitals-Senators game is airing on Monumental Sports Network 2. Joe Beninati and Alan May will have the call. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm. Craig Laughlin is out due to a medical leave of absence. #LockerStrong.

    1st Period

    Puck is dropped.

Capitals take a bench minor at 2:12 for too many men. Alex Ovechkin is serving the penalty.

Capitals take another bench minor at 3:50 for too many men. Yikes.

Aliaksei Protas stopped on a breakaway shorthanded.

Caps kill both early power plays for the Senators.

The Senators have 9 of the first 11 shots on goal in the first half of the period.

Caps third line authors the team’s best shift of the night. Lars Eller flings a shot on net and then Ethen Frank and Taylor Raddysh nearly deposit the puck past Forsberg from just outside the crease.

At intermission: These two teams just are struggling to score on each other at five-on-five. That’s the fourth consecutive 20-minute period neither team has been able to score a goal on each other. The Senators are outshooting the Capitals 11 to 7. The two teams are tied 10 to 10 at five-on-five.

    2nd Period

    Puck is dropped.

David Perron to the box for hooking at 0:39 of the period. The Caps get their first power play of the game.

Connor McMichael attempts to score on a wraparound or “power spin” as Alan May described it, but couldn’t stuff the puck past Forsberg.

Taylor Raddysh to the box for high-sticking at 3:45 of the period.

    1-0 Ottawa Senators. OTT PPG: Ridley Greig (8). Assists: D. Perron (1), T. Chabot (19). Time: 04:08.

Perron sends a centering pass across the crease that goes off Greig’s skates and in.

Greig now goes to the box at 5:35 for hooking Tom Wilson on an odd-man break.

    1-1 tie. WSH Goal: Connor McMichael (18). Assists: P. Dubois (30), M. Roy (10). Time: 07:43

McMichael’s goalless streak ends at 11 games. After a Caps PP ends, the Senators stopped covering him down low and he beats Forsberg to the top corner.

Matthew Highmore to the box for tripping Jakob Chychrun along the corner boards at 12:53.

    2-1 Ottawa Senators. OTT Goal: Brady Tkacuk (20). Assists: T. Hamonic (4), T. Kleven (3). Time: 14:53.

Tkachuk buries a rebound after a Hamonic point shot. The Capitals are challenging for goaltender interference. Drake Batherson appeared to make some minimal contact with Lindgren as he made the save on Hamonic’s point shot.

NO GOAL. The call on the ice is overturned.

Travis Hamonic hooks Aliaksei Protas at 17:24.

Josh Norris awarded a penalty shot after John Carlson wipes him out on a breakaway.

2-1 Ottawa Senators. OTT SHG (Penalty Shot): Josh Norris (18). Unassisted. Time: 17:37.

    3-1 Ottawa Senators. OTT SHG: Shane Pinto (10). Assists: J. Norris (11), J. Sanderson (26). Time: 18:15.

At intermission: Two shorties in 38 seconds have Ottawa up 3-1. Ottawa is outshooting Washington 25 to 20, but the Capitals are out-attempting them 26 to 24 at five-on-five.

    3rd Period

  • Ohio State at Penn State live score updates, highlights, how to watch Big Ten game

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Ohio State will play a familiar foe in a different place.

Thursday night, the Buckeyes will take on Penn State inside Rec Hall. It’s the former home of the Nittany Lions, one they moved out of in favor of the Bryce Jordan Center in 1996. It’s the fifth game for the men’s basketball program since it moved to newer digs, and the first time since then that the Buckeyes have visited.

Ohio State has won two straight games, while Penn State has lost two straight and six of seven.

Here are some in-arena thoughts as Ohio State prepares to play Penn State.

Colin White still out for Ohio State

Freshman wing Colin White will miss his second consecutive game for the Buckeyes with a right leg injury. White suffered the injury at Purdue on Jan. 21 and watched the second half of that game and all of Monday’s win against Iowa with a walking boot on his leg.

Meechie Johnson Jr. will also miss his 11th game as he remains away from the team.

Penn State will be without Puff Johnson, who is missing his third consecutive game.

“If I arrive half an hour early, Cristiano Ronaldo has already been there for 25 minutes. He is always the first to get on the bus and you can tell he is a perfectionist, he demands a lot from himself and from others.” “He lives for the team, helps his teammates and gives them advice. Sometimes I even let him talk to the players [in the conference]. I can’t treat him like the others, but he is intelligent and respects his role and mine.” “It’s better than I thought. 6 or 7 teams could compete in Serie A, 3 or 4 would fight for the Champions League spots. At Al Nassr, little by little we brought in the players we wanted.” “Ibra was impetuous, he had a dominating personality. Cristiano is a legend, he is global, huge. He has 1,000 goals in his mind and he will score them. He is not far off.” “It’s difficult to leave Milan, Ibra is trustworthy. CR7 is the strongest ever trained”.

    10:36 AM2 hours ago

“It was a normal discussion during the game. But when I went to greet him at the end of the match, he brought up the subject again and I had to say a few things too. We can’t lose, neither on the field nor in shouting. That day, we won on the field and in shouting. But then it passed, it stayed on the field.”

“I managed to consolidate my work and my name here in the Arab world. I’m living a moment of growth and consolidation and being elected the third best coach of the year, even working for clubs that don’t have the biggest investment, was an important recognition.”

“Al-Qadisiyah is controlled by a company, Saudi Aramco (a state-owned oil and gas company). It is a team that was promoted from the second division very easily last year and this year is already in the top positions of the league and in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. The club is investing 15, 20 and 25 million euros in players and is building a stadium that will be one of the most beautiful in the World Cup. Gabriel will come to a club that, in my opinion, will compete for and win titles in one or two years at the most.”

“Now, with 300 games completed, I see a great possibility of me continuing to do good work and, in the future, receiving an opportunity at a club with large investments so that I can compete and fight for other objectives.”

Al-Nassr’s top scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo, has 16 goal contributions and is expected to lead the line in what will be his last league match before turning 40. The Portuguese star will be supported by Sadio Mane, Otavio and Angelo.

    10:16 AM2 hours ago

Al-Raed intend to keep the core of the starting line-up with Meshari Sunyur keeping his place between the sticks, while Hamad Al Jayzani, Oumar Gonzalez, Mubarak Al Rajeh and Zakaria Hawsawi are expected to form the home side’s defensive line. Saleh Al Amri and Amir Sayoud form the attacking duo. Mohammed Fouzair, meanwhile, is out of the match due to a cruciate ligament injury sustained in October.

  • Kash Patel to Face Senators at Confirmation Hearing: FBI Nominee Live Updates

To say that Kash Patel admires President Trump would be an understatement — and Mr. Patel has seldom been accused of understatement.

His steep, swift ascent from unknown Republican congressional aide to a nominee for F.B.I. director in less than a decade owes much, if not all, to Mr. Patel’s relationship with the president, who rewarded his intense loyalty and perseverance with a succession of senior national security and defense posts during Mr. Trump’s first term.

It was the unflinching fealty he exhibited during Mr. Trump’s turbulent four years out of office that seems to have elevated Mr. Patel, 44, from a supporting player to a leading role (even if Mr. Trump recently quipped that he did not fit his own central-casting image of an F.B.I. director).

In nominating Mr. Patel, Mr. Trump called him a “brilliant lawyer” and an “America First fighter.”

Here’s how Mr. Patel described Mr. Trump at a conservative political conference last year: “We’re blessed by God to have Donald Trump be our juggernaut of justice, to be our leader, to be our continued warrior in the arena.”

Mr. Patel worked the outside game to prove himself to Mr. Trump. He made over 1,000 media appearances (and attended dozens of in-person events) in which he hammered Mr. Trump’s adversaries; wrote a now infamous book in which he singled out 60 perceived enemies for unspecified retribution; published a three-volume children’s series in which he portrayed Mr. Trump as a crowned monarch; and served as a high-volume surrogate on the 2024 campaign trail.

Mr. Patel, a Long Island native, also worked the inside game. He offered national security advice to Mr. Trump; stood by him during the grim days after the F.B.I. search of the president’s Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, in the summer of 2022; and maximized face time with Mr. Trump and his courtiers in West Palm Beach during the transition period.

But Mr. Trump’s attitude toward subordinates, even ones as enthusiastically supportive as Mr. Patel, tends to be a little diffident. Mr. Trump picked Mr. Patel after the only other serious candidate to lead the bureau, Missouri’s attorney general, Andrew Bailey, failed to impress during interviews, according to people familiar with the situation.

He has occasionally expressed doubts about Mr. Patel’s gravitas, as have many other Republicans — although they have refrained from saying so publicly for fear of incurring Mr. Trump’s wrath.

Mr. Patel has told Republican senators that he will remain independent, faithful to the law and the Constitution, and reform-focused if they back him. So far, it seems to have paid off, although he is walking a thin red line: People close to the nominee believe he has just barely enough votes in the Senate to secure his confirmation, provided his hearing before the Judiciary Committee on Thursday does not go off the rails.

It might. Democrats held their fire when Pam Bondi, Mr. Trump’s pick for attorney general, appeared before the committee, so they could unload on Mr. Patel, whom they have cast as an inexperienced, hyperpartisan Trump sycophant.

“He has neither the experience, the judgment, nor the temperament to head this critical agency,” Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the ranking Democrat on the committee, said in a statement on the eve of Mr. Patel’s confirmation hearing.

“He has pledged his loyalty to President Trump and promised to weaponize the F.B.I. on President Trump’s behalf,” Mr. Durbin added.

In a highly anticipated confirmation hearing, Kash Patel, nominee for FBI Director, is set to face questioning from Senators on his qualifications and priorities for leading the nation’s top law enforcement agency. • Live updates: RFK Jr. confirmation hearing, Trump news

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appears before the Senate Finance Committee for his confirmation hearing at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on Wednesday.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will again be on Capitol Hill today for a second confirmation hearing to be President Donald Trump’s Health and Human Services secretary — this time with the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which will continue the intense scrutiny over his history of controversial and inflammatory comments.

Kennedy is expected to face tough questions from Democrats regarding his false claims that vaccines cause autism and his conspiratorial rhetoric on federal agencies and other health policies, while Republicans are poised to seek commitments from him over his positions on abortion rights and agriculture.

Other more incendiary comments he’s made in the past, such as comparing Covid-19 pandemic mandates to Nazi Germany and apartheid laws in South Africa, have also faced backlash from both ends of the political spectrum.

Kennedy has also baselessly suggested that human-made chemicals in water systems could turn children gay or transgender. He has long peddled AIDS denialism conspiracy theories, alleging that HIV does not cause AIDS and questioning the “theology that HIV is the sole cause of AIDS.”

Routine childhood vaccinations are projected to prevent hundreds of millions of illnesses, tens of millions of hospitalizations, and more than 1 million deaths among people born between 1994 and 2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Vaccines are thoroughly tested before their release, and their safety is monitored on an ongoing basis.

About Kennedy Jr.: As a member of the famed Kennedy political dynasty, he built his career as a progressive lawyer taking on pharmaceutical companies and environmental safety causes. He later founded the nonprofit Children’s Health Defense, known for spreading anti-vaccine misinformation. After he ran for president as a Democrat-turned-independent last year, Kennedy rebranded himself as a MAGA acolyte seeking to “Make America Healthy Again” and quickly endorsed Trump.

CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski contributed to this report.

At the RFK Jr. confirmation hearing, tensions are running high as senators question his qualifications for the position. Stay tuned for live updates as the hearing unfolds.

  • More Israeli and Thai hostage releases expected in Gaza after Agam Berger freed- live updates

How the Red Cross helps get the hostages out of Gazapublished at 09:18 Greenwich Mean Time

It begins with a phone call with a location.

Once the details are received, a team from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sets off in vehicles marked with the humanitarian organisation’s logo to pick up the hostages in Gaza.

Israeli military and medical personnel are also assembled at several different locations, waiting to bring them home.

“This is more than just a drive,” says ICRC spokesperson Sarah Davies.

“These operations may seem simple, but in fact they are very complex and require rigorous security measures to minimise the risks to those involved.”

The ICRC, which acts as a neutral intermediary in the handover, assembles a team of specialists, some of whom have been involved in similar operations in the past – though this is more challenging than most.

There are some details that the group cannot speak about publicly because of concerns it could compromise the security of the operation.

Davies says they have mapped out alternative routes to get to different locations in Gaza, knowing that the “safest route can change” at any time.

Among their biggest concerns are the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance, destroyed and damaged infrastructure, and large crowds with “heightened emotions”.

Read more about how the ICRC, Israel and Hamas coordinate the hostage release.

More Israeli and Thai hostage releases expected in Gaza after Agam Berger freed- live updates

In a significant development, Israeli journalist Agam Berger has been released from captivity in Gaza after being held hostage for several weeks. This has raised hopes for the release of other hostages, including Israelis and Thais, who are still being held in the region.

The Israeli government has welcomed Berger’s release and expressed hope for the safe return of all hostages. Negotiations are reportedly underway for the release of more hostages, with sources indicating that progress is being made.

The Thai government has also been working tirelessly to secure the release of its citizens who are currently in captivity in Gaza. The Thai Foreign Ministry has been in constant contact with the relevant authorities and is closely monitoring the situation.

As the situation continues to evolve, live updates will be provided to keep the public informed about any new developments. The release of Agam Berger has brought renewed hope for the safe return of all hostages, and efforts are being made to ensure their swift and safe release.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds.

    First half

    11:24 remaining: Stanford 22, Syracuse 2

JJ Starling is called for his first personal foul of the game, catching Jaylen Blakes in the paint. Blakes makes both free throws.

The Orange add two more field goal attempts, to no avail. Raynaud sinks his second triple of the game, now up to eight points against Syracuse.

Sellers tacks on another layup, picking up the and-one against Chris Bell. Sellers converts on the three-point play.

The Orange substitute Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. into the game in place of Starling and Jyare Davis. Cuffe gives Syracuse its first points of the game over seven minutes into the first half.

Stanford extends the lead to 20 points, with Sellers and Benny Gealer adding two more baskets in favor of the home squad.

Syracuse uses its first timeout of the game.

    15:57 remaining: Stanford 7, Syracuse 0

Maxime Raynaud opens the game with a triple just before the shot clock expires. Stanford extended its lead out to seven with another jump shot from Raynaud and a layup from Oziyah Sellers.

Syracuse turned the ball over twice, and shot 0-for-4 from the field in the first four minutes.

    Pregame

Kicking off the first ACC West Coast trip in program history, Syracuse basketball (9-11, 3-6 ACC) begins a two-game trip with a bout against Stanford (14-6, 6-3 ACC).

The Orange have lost three of their last four ACC matchups, including a four-point loss to Pittsburgh on Jan. 25. Syracuse’s losses to the Panthers and at Clemson on Jan. 22 put the Orange under .500 after reaching a 9-9 overall record midway through the month.

Eddie Lampkin picked up a season-high 23 rebounds against Pittsburgh, picking up his eighth double-double of the season. He leads the ACC in offensive boards per game, 3.5 per game, and his third in total rebounds with nine.

The 23-rebound effort was the first time an Orange picked up as many rebounds since Derrick Coleman did so against the Villanova Wildcats in 1990.

Stanford hosts Syracuse for the first time in program history, and it’s only the second time these two programs have faced off. The last battle was at Madison Square Garden in 2011 during the NIT Season Tip Off.

Stanford returns home after picking up wins over Florida State and Miami — now having won four of the last five games. Its lone loss in the same stretch was to Wake Forest on Jan. 15.

The Orange will have to manage the conference’s leading scorer, Maxime Raynaud, who averages 20.5 points per contest. Raynaud and Lampkin’s matchup in the paint will be a key element to this brand-new conference game.

Raynaud has two 30-point performances this season, both in nonconference game. Jaylen Blakes and Oziyah Sellers both average 14.6 points per game to sit behind Stanford’s top center.
