In a memo to staff on Wednesday, Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace announced updates to AP’s News leadership:
Our priority in News this year is accelerating our digital transformation to ensure AP’s world class journalism remains essential for our customers and reaches new audiences around the world. This requires us to embrace new forms of digital storytelling, use data to drive our decision-making around coverage and investments, and pursue new ways to financially support our journalism.
I’m excited to announce a few changes in News leadership to support these priorities.
Michael Giarrusso is our new Vice President of News Strategy. Michael is one of AP’s most experienced and creative leaders, and a true champion for digital journalism. In this role, Michael will work with teams across News – as well as in Revenue and Technology – to identify distinctively AP journalism that can be packaged and promoted in ways that engage our customers’ digital audiences, as well as our own audience on APNews. He’ll also serve as the key liaison in News to the AP Fund for Journalism – our sister philanthropic organization – to support APFJ’s work raising funds to bolster state and local news in the United States, as well as other topical grant funding to underpin our journalism.

Michael brings to this role deep experience on both of these strategic priorities. In his most recent role leading newsgathering for our Global Beats teams, he has overseen the development of our audience-friendly Be Well and personal finance coverage, our engaging livestream shows from red carpets and the 2024 solar eclipse, and a new, streamlined approach to covering sports games. Michael has also overseen AP’s largest grant-funded teams – including Health and Science, Religion and Climate – and been instrumental in ensuring philanthropic dollars are available to support coverage across the News division.
Michael joined AP as an intern in Atlanta in 1992 and has held a variety of roles across both News and Revenue, including an 8-year stint as Global Sports editor. He is also a co-founder, along with Amanda Barrett and Julie March, of AP’s Inclusion Champions program and a leading advocate for newsroom diversity, both inside and outside of AP.
Michael’s team will include:
Corinne Chin, director of News Talent for Recruitment. Corinne has been a leader at AP in recognizing both internal and external talent, and ensuring that our approach to staffing is aligned with our strategic goals as an organization. That includes expanding the ranks of our visual journalists and ensuring that diversity is a priority in hiring and promotion.

Jessica Gresko will lead our strategy work with The Associated Press Foundation for Journalism to bolster grant funded services for state and local newsrooms in the U.S. This builds on the strong work Jessica has done with our topical grants, as well as her leadership last year connecting non-profit newsrooms in the U.S. with AP coverage of the 2024 election.

Steven Sloan will take on a year-long assignment leading strategy for grant funded content from the U.S. as we look to expand our work with non-profit newsrooms and other digital outlets. This work will build on Steven’s successful leadership of U.S. elections coverage through multiple cycles – including the 2024 election, where our digitally optimized content drove record traffic on APNews.

STARKVILLE, MS — Out of maybe every coach in college hoops, Nate Oats asks the most out of his players in practices for Alabama basketball.
Heading into Mississippi State, his requests were a little more intense. Still, the guys, especially those who needed to respond now more than ever, exceeded expectations.
In the opening statement of his Tuesday press conference, Oats said he thought the team’s last two practices were the “best two practices back to back we’ve had before a game all year.”
“We’ve been on these guys,” Oats said. “I think they’re starting to get it.”
Oats expects a big night in the Hump for big man Clifford Omoruyi and All-American guard Mark Sears after standout performances in practices before Miss. State (16-4, 4-3 SEC). The starting lineup for Alabama (17-3, 6-1 SEC) still isn’t sealed, though. Especially after Sears’ viral second-half benching against LSU on Saturday.
After the fact, Oats said the Rutgers transfer Omoruyi was at risk of being benched after halftime as well.
Players were expected to get the message that no one member of the Crimson Tide, including the head coach, is above the other, according to Oats.
That lesson will need to carry over if underdog Alabama wants to return to Tuscaloosa with a win and end January on a high note.
Score updates for Alabama basketball vs Mississippi State
Miss. State’s Josh Hubbard heating up early in the Hump
Back-to-back treys for the sophomore reclaimed the lead for Miss. State, up 8-3 after Hubbard’s contributions with a little over 18 minutes left in the first half.
Turnovers take seconds to turn up for Alabama basketball
As the ball left Jarin Stevenson’s hands and rolled into the hands of RJ Melendez, Alabama mounted its first turnover of the evening less than 30 seconds in, seeing Miss. State score its first points. The second-chance dunk was soon answered by a trademark Chris Youngblood 3-pointer for a Crimson Tide lead.
Starters announced for Alabama basketball vs Miss. State
Chris Youngblood gets his second consecutive start for the Crimson Tide alongside regulars Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Jarin Stevenson and Cliff Omoruyi.
Starting for Miss. State are Claudell Harris Jr., Josh Hubbard, Cam Matthews, RJ Melendez and Michael Nwoko.

Mississippi State starter Kanye Clary was sidelined after suffering a lower leg injury on Dec . 4 and was ruled out for the remainder of the season on Tuesday before the game.

Both teams have won three straight entering this matchup. The Suns’ latest win came Monday over the Clippers, while Minnesota downed Atlanta the same day.
Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves eliminated Phoenix in a four-game sweep during last season’s Western Conference playoffs’ first round. The Suns are eighth in the Western Conference and Timberwolves seventh.

Kevin Durant (left thumb) and rookie starting wing Ryan Dunn (left ankle sprain) are both questionable. Dunn was out for the Suns’ 111-109 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.
The Timberwolves’ backup big Naz Reid and rookie Rob Dillingham are questionable from illnesses. Donte DiVincenzo (left toe), rookies Terrence Shannon Jr. (right foot) and Jesse Edwards (undisclosed) are out.

On the other hand, the Timberwolves are looking to bounce back after a tough loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Rookie sensation Anthony Edwards has been a bright spot for Minnesota, averaging 23.9 points per game and earning praise for his explosive scoring ability.
The Suns will look to continue their winning ways and extend their streak against a young and talented Timberwolves team. Virginia Tech has lost three straight coming into tonight’s game vs Florida State and the Hokies are hoping to snap that losing streak and avoid falling further in the standings.
The Seminoles lead the all-time series, 38-25. The two sides played three times last season, with each winning at home, before FSU defeated Tech 86-76 in the second round of the 2024 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament in Washington, D.C. Hunter Cattoor and Sean Pedulla combined for 39 points in leading the Hokies to an 83-75 victory over FSU on Feb. 13, 2024 in Blacksburg. Tech’s last win in Tallahassee was on Jan. 29, 2022 (85- 72). VT is 6-21 all-time in Tallahassee. Prior to the 2022 win, the Hokies’ last victory in Tallahassee was Feb. 24, 1990. Mike Young is 3-3 vs. FSU. The two sides did not meet during the 2020-21 season.
Tobi Lawal has three double-doubles on the season, which are the most by a VT player since Lynn Kidd’s five from last season. Lawal had four double doubles a year ago at VCU. Lawal became the first Hokie to record back-to-back double-doubles since Justyn Mutts did so in November 2022. The London, England native is one of four players to rank in the top 20 in both scoring and rebounding in ACC-only games.
He ranks second in FG% in ACC-only games (61.4%), trailing only Malique Ewin. Tech has had six different leading scorers in its last seven games.

Pre-pandemonium postbag. “The nonsense of the new Champions League format spilling into January means that Man City cannot field their expensive new striker to help them get over the line. Meanwhile, while Eintracht Frankfurt are virtually over the line in the Europa League, they must surely be also mildly [word redacted by Family Website editor] at losing their top scorer before the job is fully done” – Ben Chia
“Before you say ‘Liverpool are disrespecting European heritage and the opposition with this outrageous rotation’, I say Slot has earned the right to field what could still be a competitive side” – Michael
“Raheem Sterling then. He’s got a certain fund of goodwill to draw on, but it’s running out a bit quicker than must be comfortable for him; and you sense he feels it, and wants to do something to top up the credit. But what? He’s 30 and never a great runner anyway. He can dribble and move his legs about in mysterious ways, but so could Nicolas Pépé, and see where that got him. He knows he’s there on sufferance. He’s been through a lot, and deserves better. May he score a double hat-trick tonight, before the waters close over him” – Charles Antaki
Arsenal are pretty much certain of a top-eight finish, so Mikel Arteta gives his starting XI a good old shoogle. Neto makes his first start in goal, with David Raya putting his feet up at home. Ethan Nwaneri, Raheem Sterling, Jacob Kiwior and Jorginho all start.
Liverpool make wholesale changes with top-two qualification guaranteed and a trip to Bournemouth this weekend uppermost in mind. Jayden Danns makes his first start up front, alongside the lesser-spotted Federico Chiesa. Andy Robertson is getting a run-out in central defence by the looks of it.
Ollie Watkins – reportedly the subject of a £60m bid from Arsenal – starts for Villa. Fellow transfer target Jhon Duran is on the bench. Celtic meanwhile fill the gap vacated by the departed Kyogo Furuhashi with Adam Idah.
Jeopardy Corner. Liverpool are guaranteed a top-two finish. Arsenal are almost certainly going to qualify automatically for the Round of 16. Aston Villa and Celtic – who face off in this week’s Battle of Britain – are shoo-ins for the play-offs, and both have a chance of a top-eight finish if things go their way. Manchester City, however, are in a spot of bother, so their must-win game with Brugge gets the full MBM treatment, courtesy of Daniel Harris. Please toggle between us to your heart’s content.
The mega-table, as it stands going into the final matchday. I can categorically state that we will not be updating this every time a goal goes in. We love doing things for you, but there are limits.

The UEFA Champions League’s first-ever league phase comes to a close on Wednesday, when all 18 games will kick off simultaneously and a dramatic conclusion is in store for a handful of Europe’s top teams.
Almost all of the 18 games on the schedule will have something at stake, from spots in the top eight or top 24 to the chance to earn ideal seeding for the knockout rounds. Paris Saint-Germain are also at risk of elimination on Matchday 8, though a draw at Stuttgart would be enough to ensure they will take part in the next round.
Elsewhere around Europe, Liverpool and Barcelona have already booked direct passageway to the round of 16 but the Reds can clinch top spot with a draw at Eindhoven. A win, though, will ensure that they would end the league phase with a perfect eight wins out of eight.

Just about a half hour to go before things get rolling between the Hawkeyes and Wildcats. Be sure to keep refreshing this page often for the latest updates from the game.

Can the Hawkeyes keep 3-point momentum flowing?
The Hawkeyes found light at the end of the 3-point tunnel in Seattle, finishing 9-for-13 with seven of those treys coming from Olsen and Taylor McCabe. Those are the most likely candidates to keep Iowa ascending from deep.
There are a lot of advantageous matchups Northwestern provides, but perimeter defense has been one of the Wildcats’ top flaws. Across the Big Ten, Northwestern ranks 15th in both 3-point defense (33.4%) and field-goal defense (40.6%). Conference foes are averaging more than 6 1/2 treys per game against the Wildcats.

Can Iowa restore home energy amid rare losing streak in Carver?
One last little bit of hangover from Iowa’s five-game losing streak can be erased Tuesday night. Three straight home losses was arguably the most jarring element of the Hawkeyes’ skid.
That said, Northwestern offers the perfect get-right opportunity.
