USA’s Madison Keys wins first grand slam title at Australian Open, stunning world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in thrilling final
CNN
—
Madison Keys won her first ever grand slam title on Saturday, stunning two-time defending champion and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3 2-6 7-5 in a thrilling Australian Open women’s final.
The 29-year-old American initially enjoyed one of those golden days when every part of her game came together perfectly – her serve was immaculate, her returns aggressive and her groundstrokes as powerful as the notoriously powerful Sabalenka – as she raced into an early one-set lead.
But in the second set – as Sabalenka displayed all the qualities that have made her the most dominant hard-court player on the women’s tour – Keys’ easy, languid rhythm deserted her and all the momentum seemed to swing back towards the Belarusian.
Keys has come close to a grand slam title before, reaching the 2017 US Open final and four major semifinals. But none of that pressure seemed to affect her in the final set as she held her nerve, finally broke Sabalenka at 7-5, raised her arms to the sky in celebration before running over to her team, embracing her coach and husband Bjorn Fratangelo.
A former prodigy who seemed destined for grand slam success early in her career, Keys had never quite reached the heights she was expected to reach, until now. She suffered a devastating and comprehensive 6-3 6-0 loss to Sloane Stephens in the 2017 US Open final before somehow losing to Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open semifinal despite being a set and a break up.
“I have wanted this for so long and I have been in one other grand slam final. It did not go my way and I didn’t know if I was every going to be able to get back to this position to try to win a trophy again,” she said in her on-court interview afterwards, her voice cracking with emotion. “And my team believed in me every step of the way so thank you so much.
“Last year was so tough with some really bad injuries and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it again and to be here and to have this trophy and to also be able to do it with my husband who is kind of dazed and confused over there, I love you all so much and I cannot wait for more.”
This year, something seemed different for Keys. She came into this final on the back of an incredible run through this tournament, sweeping past higher ranked players like Elena Rybakina, Danielle Collins and world No. 2 Iga Świątek, and became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2005 to defeat the world No. 1 and No. 2 seeds at the Australian Open.
And Keys continued that momentum in the final, opening with a ferocity that blew Sabalenka off the court as she raced to a 5-1 lead. Though Sabalenka seemed uncharacteristically rattled, conceding two double faults and a break in her first service game, it was Keys’ outstanding tennis that forced the world No. 1 into so many errors.
She missed just three first serves in the first set and every shot she attempted seemed to find its target – even a backhand slice that looked to be heading into the net ghosted over it, leaving Sabalenka marooned on the baseline, only able to grimace as the ball landed well out of her reach.
Keys then wrapped up the first set 6-3, and Sabalenka left the court immediately to reset and try to kickstart her comeback.
As Sabalenka’s serve became more accurate in the second set, giving her more of a foothold in the match, shots that Keys had made in the first set floated long or became tangled up in the net and she hit as many unforced errors in the first four games of the second set as she had done in the entirety of the first.
Sabalenka broke Keys twice, took control of the second set, and suddenly the scores were level.
With the pressure building, Keys served first in the third set and set the tone early, winning every point in her first service game. Sabalenka matched her stride-for-stride, however, and the score remained locked on serve at 5-5. Not since 2012 had a women’s grand slam final been so close in the third set.
It seemed as if the match was heading for a deciding tiebreak but Keys found an extra burst of energy, produced two forehand winners to hold serve and make it 6-5, before breaking Sabalenka with another winner to make it 7-5 and secure the win.
Sabalenka, who had been seeking to become the first woman for 26 years to win three consecutive Australian Open titles, was left stunned and smashed her racket on the floor in frustration before recovering to congratulate Keys and joke around with her team during the trophy ceremony afterwards.
“As always, that’s your fault guys!” she joked. “I don’t want to see you for the next week – I really hate you! Thank you so much for everything and blah, blah blah.
“I think we did our best, just Madison was doing incredible and I couldn’t do anything in this match. Next time I play Madison I will bring better tennis. Of course, sending love to my team. I love you even though we lost.”

McGlynn connected on a left-footed strike from about 30 yards in the 37th minute, Agyemang deflected a shot off goalkeeper Wuilker Faríñez not long afterward and the Americans were off and running. The match was not on a Fifa international date, and defenders Miles Robinson and Shaq Moore were the only US starters who entered with more than two international appearances.
January camp could be a springboard toward consideration for the 2026 World Cup. Top players will return for the Concacaf Nations League final four in March, but the roster for the Concacaf Gold Cup in June and July could include many of the younger players in camp this month hoping for larger roles.
DaMarcus Beasley, Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, DeAndre Yedlin and Landon Donovan are among the players whose national team careers were boosted by January camps.

Venezuela gave debuts to four starters: left back Anthony Graterol, midfielder Bryant Ortega, winger Jovanny Bolivar and forward Gleiker Mendoza. Maurice Cova, Edson Tortolero, Thomás Gutiérrez, Edson Tortolero and Jorge Yriarte made their debuts as substitutes.

Australian Open: USA’s Taylor Fritz stunned by veteran Gaël Monfils, who ‘inspired’ wife Elina Svitolina to own upset win
CNN
—
French veteran Gaël Monfils rolled back the years to stun the USA’s No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday, winning 3-6 7-5 7-6(1) 6-4 after three hours and eight minutes of scintillating tennis.
The 38-year-old Monfils becomes the second-oldest male player in history after Roger Federer to reach the fourth round Down Under since the Australian Open moved to Melbourne Park in 1988, per the ATP.
During the very next match in the same Margaret Court Arena, Elina Svitolina, Monfils’ wife, ousted the women’s world No. 4, Jasmine Paolini, to complete a dream day for the family.
Monfils watched Svitolina’s win from her players’ box as the Ukrainian 28th seed also came from a set down to win 2-6 6-4 6-0 and reach the fourth round.
“It was a crazy battle. I got inspired after my husband’s win,” Svitolina said.
“I watched a little bit of that match, of course it was tough to miss.”
Monfils, a 13-time winner on the ATP Tour, sealed his victory on a booming ace – his 24th of the match – and proceeded to celebrate with a shimmy and a dance on-court, his moves and infectious smile drawing huge cheers from the crowd.
“I felt good. I felt in this moment I wanted to do that (dance),” Monfils told reporters. “I wanted to be myself. I had this in my mind so I just did what as in my mind. It was my way to express my joy.
“As I always say, I keep playing for those matches. Play a big player, big stadium, good crowd, good energy. When you’re 38 years old, it’s what I want and I had it. I was very fortunate to win it but it’s exactly why I’m playing.”
It was a near-perfect performance of skill, power and wit from Monfils after dropping the first set.
Fritz was unable to get to grips with Monfils’ varied game from the baseline, while the Frenchman’s serve was at times an unstoppable weapon.
Monfils, the world No. 41 and former world No. 6, is enjoying an incredible run to start his 22nd season on the tour; last week, he won the ASB Classic in Auckland to become the oldest player to ever win an ATP Tour title.
However, despite his early success in 2025, Monfils doesn’t believe he’s a contender at the Australian Open.
“Win?” he replied, wide-eyed with surprise when asked if he could win the title. “No. To be honest with you, it’s not even a dream to win the tournament. My dream is to be old with a lot of kids and healthy.
“That’s your dream, I guess, for me to win a slam,” he joked. “My dream is to have an unbelievable family. Tennis is cool, of course you want to have goals and dreams, but my dream is out there.”
Despite Fritz’s defeat, there remains a healthy contingent of US participants in the tournament, with Monfils facing American Ben Shelton in the fourth round on Monday.
Elsewhere, American teenage qualifier Learner Tien defeated France’s Corentin Moutet 7-6 (10) 6-3 6-3 to continue his dream run in Australia.
The 19-year-old, who had never before been past the first round of a slam, stunned fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the previous round and will face Lorenzo Sonego on Monday.
No. 21 seed Ben Shelton also reached the fourth round with a 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) win over Italy’s No. 16 seed Lorenzo Muzetti, while unseeded 20-year-old American Alex Michelsen upset No. 19 seed Karen Khachanov 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2.
In the women’s draw, Madison Keys won the all-American clash against Danielle Collins 6-4 6-4, while Emma Navarro beat Ons Jabeur 6-4 3-6 6-4.
The Australian Open has kicked off with some surprising upsets, and one of the most shocking results came in the match between USA’s Taylor Fritz and veteran player Gaël Monfils. Monfils, known for his athleticism and shot-making abilities, managed to stun Fritz in a thrilling encounter. What made the win even more special was the fact that Monfils’ wife, Elina Svitolina, was also in action on the same day and managed to pull off her own upset victory. Monfils later revealed that Svitolina’s win had inspired him to give his best on the court, and it clearly paid off.
Monfils’ victory serves as a reminder of the experience and skill that veteran players bring to the court, often causing upsets against younger opponents. It also highlights the importance of support from loved ones, as Svitolina’s success seemed to have a positive impact on her husband’s performance.
As the Australian Open continues, fans can expect more thrilling matches and unexpected results, making this tournament a must-watch for tennis enthusiasts around the world.
