  • USC Trojans Fall After Iowa Hawkeyes Upset

After suffering an upset loss on the road to the unranked Iowa Hawkeyes, the USC Trojans women’s basketball team is now ranked No. 7, down from No. 4.

The biggest movers of the poll were USC and Michigan State. The Spartans moved down four spots to No. 20. Other teams like No. 14 North Carolina State, No. 17 Georgia Tech, No. 18 West Virginia, and No. 22 Florida State all moved up three spots in the latest rankings, released on Monday.

The loss to Iowa was USC’s second loss of the season, keeping them near the top of the rankings. It was a rowdy environment in Iowa as the Hawkeyes were also celebrating the jersey retirement of Iowa legend and women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark.

“I’m really impressed with the atmosphere here, the love for women’s basketball, the appreciation for what Caitlin’s done, and coach [Lisa] Bluder,” said USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb after the loss to Iowa.

Clark was in attendance among the sold-out crowd that saw Iowa beat USC and star guard JuJu Watkins. Despite the loss, USC remains one of the top teams in the country and is expected to receive a high seed in the NCAA Tournament in March.

The current top four teams in the AP Top-25 Poll consist of No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 South Carolina, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 Texas.

The Longhorns, No. 5 LSU, and No. 6 UConn all moved up a spot, ahead of USC after the upset loss to Iowa.

Behind the Trojans is No. 8 Ohio State, and USC will have a chance to prove themselves against the Buckeyes on Saturday, Feb. 8. Before facing Ohio State at home, USC has a road game against the Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Before losing to the Hawkeyes, the Trojans had only lost to Notre Dame and had one the most impressive resumes in the country. USC has yet to play their cross town rival, the UCLA Bruins, giving the Trojans two chances to knock off the highest-ranked team in the country.

First, USC will host UCLA in the Galen Center on Feb. 13 before the Trojans go on the road and play the Bruins in the regular season finale.

In a shocking turn of events, the USC Trojans were handed a stunning defeat by the Iowa Hawkeyes in a nail-biting game. The Trojans, who were favored to win, were unable to overcome the determined Hawkeyes, who played with tenacity and skill.

The Trojans’ offense struggled to find their rhythm against the Hawkeyes’ strong defense, and their usually reliable defense faltered in the face of Iowa’s relentless attack. Despite a valiant effort, the Trojans were unable to mount a comeback and fell to the Hawkeyes in a heartbreaking loss.

This upset serves as a reminder that in college football, anything can happen on any given day. The Trojans will need to regroup and refocus in order to bounce back from this defeat and continue their pursuit of a successful season. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with, and will surely be a team to watch as the season progresses.

  • No. 4 USC keeps on winning as Trojans post 82-69 victory over Minnesota

Make it 15 in a row for the No. 4 USC Trojans as Kiki Iriafen and JuJu Watkins each had 20-point outings in a comfortable 82-69 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Trojans ran out to an 18-3 lead on Thursday evening and although it didn’t turn into a lopsided blowout for four quarters, USC never trailed and was able to withstand something of a nervy fourth quarter.

The Trojans took a 64-49 lead into the final 10 minutes only for the Gophers to score the first nine points of the quarter and cut the USC lead to six at 64-58 with 8:10 remaining. USC true freshman Avery Howell connected on a three-pointer and then a 7-0 run by Watkins stretched the Trojans’ lead to a comfortable margin as USC cruised the final 6:42 with a double-digit margin.

Iriafen scored a game-high 23 points and collected 11 rebounds. Watkins scored 10 points and also had 11 rebounds, though she struggled from beyond the three-point line. She and Kennedy Smith combined to go just 2-for-13 from beyond the arc. Smith did have nine points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

It was the seventh double-double of the season for Iriafen and fourth for Watkins.

Watkins has scored at least 20 points in 45 of the 54 games she’s played for the Trojans. The three-point make means she’s hit one in all 15 games of this winning streak.

The Trojans played without Rayah Marshall against Minnesota. She missed the game due to injury.

USC now hits the road for games at Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 2 and Wisconsin on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Iowa is 14-7 overall but 4-6 in conference play. Wisconsin is 11-10 overall and 2-8 against Big Ten competition. Following those games, the Trojans have two gigantic statement opportunities back home at Galen Center.

No. 8 Ohio State visits on Saturday, Feb. 8 and then No. 1 UCLA heads across town on Thursday, Feb. 13.

The No. 4 USC Trojans continued their winning streak as they defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers with a score of 82-69. The Trojans showcased their dominance on both ends of the court, with stellar performances from key players leading the team to victory.

USC’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with efficient shooting and strong ball movement leading to easy buckets. The Trojans also stepped up on defense, causing turnovers and limiting Minnesota’s scoring opportunities.

With this win, USC improves their record to an impressive 8-0 and solidifies their spot as a top contender in college basketball. The Trojans are proving themselves to be a force to be reckoned with, and it will be exciting to see how they continue to perform as the season progresses.

  • USC women run win streak to 15 games, continue historic start to season

Playing its first home game in 18 days, the USC women’s basketball team gave an impressive crowd inside Galen Center what it came to see Thursday night.

The No. 4-ranked Trojans built a quick double-digit lead in the first quarter and went on to close out an 82-69 win over Minnesota, running their win streak to 15 games — the longest for the program since the 1982-83 season.

Kiki Iriafen led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting, JuJu Watkins had 20 points and 11 boards and freshman Avery Howell added 12 points off the bench as the Trojans improved to 19-1 overall — the best start for USC since 1981-82 — and 9-0 in the Big Ten.

Sophie Hart had 18 points and 8 rebounds for Minnesota (18-4, 6-4) while Mallory Heyer added 17 points and 7 boards.

That the Trojans made it look so easy yet again against one of the better teams in the Big Ten was the latest reminder that they are scripting a very special season.

“It was nice to be home. Our crowd is continuing to be amazing. It was a long time that we didn’t get to play here,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “Minnesota is a really good team. I told the team a number of times, they had the same number of wins as us. They’re at the top section of the conference, and we thought we took care of business.”

USC had its long stretch away from home in part because its Jan. 15 home game vs. Northwestern was postponed in the wake of the fires across Los Angeles.

In their return to Galen Center, the Trojans were without starting center Rayah Marshall due to injury and Watkins started the game 0 for 10 from the field in the first half before finding her rhythm offensively.

None of that mattered as the Trojans led 25-15 after the first quarter led by 9 points from Iriafen and 6 from Talia von Oelhoffen.

The game never got closer than 6 points the rest of the way. Minnesota opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run, but USC scored 10 of the next 12 points — including 7 straight from Watkins — to pull away comfortably.

“We didn’t know that Rayah wasn’t going to play until this morning, so I thought other people stepped up finding different ways to win,” Gottlieb said. “I think our freshmen, who got significant minutes, were really, really good and they keep getting better, which is exciting. And at the same time, I think our standards are really high — we could have been cleaner offensively and defensively in that second half so we’ll have some good film to learn from it as well.”

As for Watkins’ slow start …

“I thought her teammates really lifted her up. The fact that people are going to continue to give us open 3s when she’s crowded and we continue to knock them down — that’s the second game in a row that I think we’ve made 11 3s — I think will eventually make people really have to make decisions,” Gottlieb said. “But I think she’s a very mentally tough human being and basketball player and finds a way at some point to figure it out. … I don’t think any of us were surprised the shots went down in the second half.”

Iriafen notched her seventh double-double of the season and Watkins her fourth. Watkins has scored in double figures every game this season.

Howell, meanwhile, tied her high with 4 3-pointers for the second straight game and is 8-for-13 from long distance in that span.

“I’m always in the gym, whether that’s outside of practice or during practices, but I think just I’m getting more comfortable with the role and the attention other people on our team draw,” she said. “I think I’m doing a better job finding gaps and putting myself in the best position to be a pressure release for them.”

The USC women’s basketball team is on fire this season, extending their win streak to an impressive 15 games. With each victory, they continue to make history and solidify their status as a powerhouse in college basketball.

The team’s relentless determination and cohesive teamwork have been the driving forces behind their success. Led by their talented roster of players and a skilled coaching staff, the USC women have proven themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the court.

Their historic start to the season has fans and analysts alike buzzing with excitement. The team’s impressive performance has solidified their spot as a top contender in the conference and has put them on the radar of national recognition.

As they continue to dominate their opponents and rack up wins, the USC women are showing no signs of slowing down. With their sights set on a championship title, this team is one to watch as they continue to make waves in the world of college basketball.

  • Scouting No. 10-ranked Alijah Arenas and his fit at USC

Alijah Arenas announced his commitment to USC and head coach Eric Musselman on Thursday afternoon. The 6-foot-6 guard from Chatsworth High School and the Compton Magic grassroots program recently became the No. 10 overall prospect in the national class of 2025, after finalizing his reclassification from 2026.

Musselman is in his first season with the Trojans and previously coached Arenas’ father, Gilbert Arenas, with the Golden State Warriors during the 2002-03 season. Now, Alijah becomes the first five-star prospect and McDonald’s All-American to commit to him since taking over the program last spring.

Arenas chose USC over Arizona, while also listing Kansas, Kentucky, and Louisville among his finalists. He joins a pair of other nationally ranked guards, No. 45 Jerry Easter and No. 132 Elzie Harrington, in the Trojans’ class 2025 class.

Scouting No. 10-ranked Alijah Arenas: Is he the perfect fit for USC?

Alijah Arenas, a highly-touted high school prospect and the No. 10-ranked player in the country, has been generating a lot of buzz in the college football world. With his impressive size, speed, and playmaking ability, it’s no surprise that top programs like USC are vying for his commitment.

Arenas, a dynamic wide receiver with a knack for making big plays, could be the missing piece that USC needs to take their offense to the next level. His combination of speed and agility makes him a nightmare for opposing defenses, and his ability to create separation and make tough catches in traffic sets him apart from other receivers in his class.

But it’s not just his on-field talent that makes Arenas an attractive prospect for USC. Off the field, he is known for his strong work ethic, leadership skills, and commitment to excellence. These qualities make him a perfect fit for a program like USC, where success both on and off the field is expected.

With the Trojans in need of a game-changing playmaker at the wide receiver position, Alijah Arenas could be the answer they’ve been looking for. His ability to stretch the field, make defenders miss, and come up with clutch catches in critical moments could make him a star in the USC offense.

As the recruiting process heats up, all eyes will be on Alijah Arenas as he decides where to take his talents. If he chooses USC, he could be the key to bringing the Trojans back to national prominence. USC fans, keep an eye on this electrifying playmaker – he could be the next great Trojan receiver.

  • Five-star Chatsworth guard Alijah Arenas commits to USC

Eric Musselman knew well before he took the reins at USC that recruiting the Southland and its wellspring of hoops talent would be essential to his success with the Trojans.

“We have to recruit L.A.,” Musselman said after a game in December. “And not just recruit them a little bit. We have to recruit them relentlessly.”

That unrelenting approach on the recruiting trail had yet to fully resonate until Thursday, when five-star Chatsworth guard Alijah Arenas, one of the top uncommitted prospects in this year’s class, committed to the Trojans.

Arenas’ commitment marks the biggest recruiting victory of the Musselman era, the first five-star prospect to endorse the coach’s vision in L.A.

Arenas, the son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, is the No. 10 recruit in this year’s class and the second-ranked prospect in the state, according to 247 Sports. He picked USC over Arizona, among other schools.

“It felt like the best fit,” Arenas said while announcing his commitment on his father’s podcast, “Gil’s Arena.” “Seeing what USC was like, it made me feel special.”

Arenas, a 6-foot-6 guard, was named to the McDonald’s All-American game this week after reclassifying to become a senior. He’s averaging 31.8 points for Chatsworth in his third season for the Chancellors. The family decided to enroll him in a City Section public school rather than a private school in the hope it would help him improve as a leader and player facing double and triple teams.

Gilbert Arenas attended Grant High and Arizona, so USC’s success in recruiting Alijah might come as a surprise considering his father’s Arizona ties.

Arenas gives USC a trio of prospects in this year’s class, alongside top-50 guard Jerry Easter of Missouri and four-star St. John Bosco guard Elzie Harrington. They’ll join a roster next season that will look decidedly different. More than half the team will have exhausted its eligibility, making it even more critical that Musselman establish a foothold in Southern California.

With Arenas’ commitment, he’s on the right track.

Chatsworth High School standout Alijah Arenas has officially committed to play basketball for the USC Trojans, bringing his five-star talent to the Pac-12 powerhouse.

Arenas, a 6’4″ guard known for his scoring ability and defensive prowess, chose USC over several other top programs who were vying for his commitment. With his exceptional skill set and basketball IQ, he is expected to make an immediate impact for the Trojans.

USC head coach Andy Enfield expressed his excitement about adding Arenas to the roster, stating, “Alijah is a dynamic player who can score from anywhere on the court. His skill set and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our program, and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes at USC.”

Arenas’ commitment is a major win for the Trojans and further solidifies their status as a contender in the Pac-12. USC fans can look forward to seeing Alijah Arenas light up the scoreboard and make a name for himself in the collegiate basketball world.

  • Alijah Arenas, son of Gilbert Arenas, pledges to USC on father’s podcast as Trojans land five-star SG

Five-star shooting guard Alijah Arenas has committed to USC, he announced Thursday. 247Sports’ No. 1-ranked shooting guard in the class of 2025 and the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas revealed his school choice on his father’s Gil’s Arena Podcast.

During the appearance, the 6-foot-6 senior from Chatsworth (California) High School FaceTimed Trojans coach Eric Musselman and committed to him live on camera.

Prior to his commitment, Arenas visited both USC and Arizona — where the elder Arenas played — but chose to remain local for college.

“For me, (USC) felt like the best fit,” Arenas said on the podcast. “For everybody that supported me on this journey, just helped me see my path. Then going on campus and seeing how USC was, like, it made me special. I talked to the coach, and seeing what I could possibly be, it was amazing for me. I think I could really go and play for USC.”

The third player to commit to USC during the 2025 recruiting cycle, Arenas joins four-star guards Jerry Easter and Elzie Harrington in a class that now ranks No. 7 overall, according to 247Sports’ industry-generated composite team rankings.

247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein says USC is getting a big-time offensive talent.

“Arenas is a versatile scoring threat. He doesn’t always separate with his first move, but he’s elite with his secondary moves and has a wide variety of counters in his bag. He also shoots an easy ball from long range with soft, natural touch, despite dipping his left shoulder and twisting into his release,” Finkelstein wrote in his scouting report of Arenas. “Defensively, his size, length, hands and court coverage are all assets, but his lateral quickness and ability to pressure the ball have fluctuated over the years as his body has evolved.

“The bottom line is that Arenas is a glaring talent in the midst of a late growth spurt and has significant long-term potential.”

Originally a member of the class of 2026, Arenas recently reclassified in hopes of following in his father’s footsteps to the NBA as soon as possible. Part of that process now includes playing for a coach under whom the elder Arenas flourished early in his career with the Golden State Warriors.

Though he’s an exceptionally gifted offensive player, Arenas says he’s just looking to be coachable upon his arrival at USC.

“I feel like the best and the biggest step for me is being coachable. Being willing to learn any and everything that I can.”

Alijah Arenas, son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, has made a big decision in his basketball career by pledging to play for the University of Southern California (USC) on his father’s podcast. • Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team sinks against No. 4 USC

But once the Gophers found their footing, they traded punches with USC rather impressively. Hart had another strong game, scoring 18 points with eight rebounds. Mallory Heyer made five of seven three-pointers — she was the only Gophers player to hit a three — and scored 17. Battle scored 14 points with seven rebounds, a block and a steal.

The Gophers were down 15 after three quarters. Heyer hit a three and two free throws and Hart scored to pull the Gophers within 64-58 with 8:10 left. But seconds later Avery Howell hit a three to stop the rally.

Struggling to defend the perimeter on one end and finding good shots hard to find, the Gophers fell behind 20-5 before the game was six minutes old, when Clarice Akunwafo scored with 4:03 left in the quarter.

The Trojans hit five of 11 three-pointers in the quarter, led by Iriafen, who hit two and had nine points in the first quarter.

Hart and Grace Grocholski each had four points in a 10-2 run that pulled the Gophers within seven late in the quarter before a three by Talia von Oelhoffen made it a 10-point game entering the second quarter.

Calmed down, the Gophers hung with the Trojans for much of the second quarter. Minnesota continued to keep a lid on Watkins’ scoring — she was 0-for-10 in the first half — but had a hard time slowing Iriafen, who had 14 points and eight rebounds by halftime, when USC led 40-28, a lead it extended to 15 after three quarters.

In a tough matchup against the No. 4 ranked USC Trojans, the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team came up short, suffering a disappointing loss. Despite putting up a valiant effort, the Gophers were unable to overcome the strong defense and offensive firepower of USC.

The Gophers fought hard throughout the game, but ultimately fell short as USC’s talented roster proved to be too much to handle. Despite the loss, the Gophers showed resilience and determination, and will look to bounce back in their next game.

It was a tough defeat for the Gophers, but they will use this experience to learn and grow as a team. With their competitive spirit and dedication, the Gophers are sure to come back stronger in their future matchups. Stay tuned for more updates on the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team as they continue their season.
