  • Gmail warns users to secure accounts after ‘malicious’ AI hack confirmed

Sophisticated scams fueled by artificial intelligence are threatening the security of billions of Gmail users. security warning issued

As AI-powered phone calls mimicking human voices have become incredibly realistic, a new report from Forbes warned that the email service’s 2.5 billion users could be targeted by “malicious” actors that are employing AI to dupe customers into handing over credentials.

The outlet reported that the cybercriminals deploy phone calls posing as Google support — complete with a caller ID that looks convincingly legitimate. The technician might say the person’s account has been compromised in some way, or that they are attempting an account recovery.

“She sounded like a real engineer, the connection was super clear, and she had an American accent,” Latta told Forbes. Anadolu via Getty Images

The so-called support agent will then send an email to the user’s Gmail account from what appears to be a legitimate Google email address to confirm the account was compromised and receive a code to recover the account.

For Zach Latta, the founder of the Hack Club, this is where he stopped the elaborate scam.

“She sounded like a real engineer, the connection was super clear, and she had an American accent,” Latta told Forbes.

Despite how real the voice on the other end of the line sounds, however, it is a scheme to trick customers into handing over precious login information to gain access to their accounts.

Garry Tan, the founder of venture capital firm Y Combinator, issued a “public service announcement” on X after receiving convincing phishing emails and phone calls.

“They claim to be checking that you are alive and that they should disregard a death certificate filed that claims a family member is recovering your account,” he wrote. “It’s a pretty elaborate ploy to get you to allow password recovery.”

Simiarly, Sam Mitrovic, a Microsoft solutions consultant, experienced the same phenomenon months ago, according to a blog post written at the time.

He recalled receiving a Google account recovery attempt notification, followed less than an hour later by a phone call that looked like it was from the tech company, but he ignored it. A week later, it happened again. This time, he picked up.

“It’s an American voice, very polite and professional. The number is Australian,” he recounted, adding that he verified the phone number on an official Google support page.

“He introduces himself and says that there is suspicious activity on my account. He asks if I’m traveling, when I said no, he asks if I logged in from Germany to which I reply no.”

Then, the agent informs Mitrovic that “someone has had access to my account for a week” and was offering to help him secure it, but, luckily, he noticed that the follow-up email sent by the caller was a spoofed email address and stopped answering.

“The caller said ‘Hello,’ I ignored it then about 10 seconds later, then said ‘Hello’ again,” he described. “At this point I released it as an AI voice as the pronunciation and spacing were too perfect.”

Upon double-checking his log-in sessions in his Google account settings, he saw that the only log-ins were his own.

“Despite many red flags upon closer inspection, this call seemed legitimate enough to trick many people,” he warned.

“The scams are getting increasingly sophisticated, more convincing and are deployed at ever larger scale.”

To protect yourself and your accounts from malicious actors, Forbes advised turning on “Advanced Protection,” which, according to a Google spokesperson, “takes extra steps to verify your identity” with the use of passkeys and smart keys to keep your account secure, even if hackers have your credentials.

Recently, Gmail users have been receiving warnings to secure their accounts following a confirmed AI hack. The hack, which was described as “malicious” by Google, targeted users’ personal information and sensitive data.

In response to the hack, Gmail has advised users to take immediate action to secure their accounts. This includes changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and reviewing recent account activity for any suspicious behavior.

The AI hack is a concerning development in the world of cybersecurity, as it demonstrates the capabilities of malicious actors to exploit advanced technologies for their own gain. It is essential for users to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting their personal information online.

If you are a Gmail user, make sure to follow the recommended security measures and stay informed about any further developments regarding the hack. Your privacy and security should always be a top priority.

  • Copilot’s powerful new ‘Think Deeper’ feature is free for all users – how it works

    Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET

In the fall, Microsoft unveiled its latest Copilot AI features and placed them in Copilot Labs, Microsoft’s home for experimental features only available to Copilot Pro subscribers. Now, one of the standout features is moving out of Copilot Labs and into Copilot so all users can access it for free.

    Available to all Copilot users

On Wednesday, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman shared via an X post that the Think Deeper feature was made available for all Copilot users at no additional cost. The feature leverages OpenAI’s O1 reasoning model to deliver higher-quality responses to complex prompts.

The o1 model was trained to “think before it speaks,” and as a result, takes a bit longer to process your query — around 30 seconds, according to Microsoft. This is especially useful for STEM-related tasks such as coding, analysis, and advanced math problems. Other use cases include in-depth advice and planning.

    Microsoft Think Deeper

    Screenshot by Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET

OpenAI has kept its advanced reasoning model from free users, with the o1 model only available for paid subscribers, including ChatGPT Pro, Team, Edu, and Enterprise users. As a result, being able to access it for free in Copilot is a big opportunity for people who want to try it without shelling out the money.

Also: Microsoft’s new Copilot+ Surface devices are built for business with Intel inside

The only caveat is that it doesn’t have access to the internet, but Suleyman said in a comment on the X post that Microsoft is “working on it.”

    How to access Think Deeper

To access the feature, sign into Copilot using your Microsoft account. Once you do, next to the text box, you will see the “Think Deeper” button, which you can click to activate the model when answering your prompt. As a free user at the time of writing this article, I already had access to the feature.

Also: Microsoft’s latest optional patch is a bug-fix bonanza for Windows 11 24H2

If you need help getting started, upon clicking “Think Deeper,” you will be given sample prompts, as seen in the screenshot above. Beyond this feature, Suleyman shared that Microsoft has so much more in the pipeline. After trailing behind OpenAI for a bit, Microsoft may be gearing up to reclaim its throne.

Copilot, the popular AI-powered code completion tool, has just released a powerful new feature called ‘Think Deeper’ that is now available for all users for free. This innovative feature helps developers improve their coding skills by providing suggestions and insights on how to approach complex problems in a more strategic way.

Here’s how the ‘Think Deeper’ feature works:

    1. Contextual Analysis: Copilot analyzes the code context and provides suggestions on how to optimize or refactor the code for better performance and efficiency.

    2. Problem Solving Strategies: When faced with a challenging coding problem, Copilot offers different approaches and strategies to tackle the problem effectively.

    3. Code Patterns: Copilot identifies common code patterns and suggests ways to simplify and streamline the code for better readability and maintainability.

    4. Code Review Recommendations: In addition to providing suggestions during coding, Copilot also offers recommendations for code reviews to ensure the code meets best practices and standards.

Overall, the ‘Think Deeper’ feature is a valuable tool for developers looking to enhance their coding skills and improve their problem-solving abilities. With Copilot’s powerful new feature now available for free to all users, developers can take their coding to the next level and write cleaner, more efficient code.

  • It looks like someone at Activision is leaking Slack screenshots to right-wing X users

Activision Blizzard employees are facing increased harassment on X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube following the distribution of what appear to be leaked internal messages between employees discussing the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at the company.

The messages—which appear to have been sent via Slack, a communications tool used at Activision Blizzard—have been directly posted by far-right users attacking the company for continuing to support diversity in the workplace. It appears someone with access to Activision’s Slack channel is sending screenshots and photos of these messages directly to these users.

Activision Senior QA tester Sam Hudson appeared to confirm the ongoing harassment in a post on LinkedIn on January 25 and stated several of their colleagues had been “doxxed.”

“This employee took screenshots of ABK wide discussions about the safety of our protected information (like name changes and visa statuses) and sent them to an an extremely racist, sexist, and transphobic individual on Twitter who has over a 100 thousand followers,” they added.

“It is even more dangerous to be trans or an immigrant at Activision now apparently, as someone who works with us has no problems doxxing people.”

Game Developer reviewed the leaked message and identified the names of several current employees of Activision and its subsidiaries.

Related:Mad Mushroom cofounder Asmongold to ‘step away’ from company after anti-Muslim remarks

These leaks raise questions about what Activision is doing to protect its employees, and what action it will take against the person or persons who shared the screenshots if they work for the company. The company’s publicly-posted diversity policy promises it will create “safe spaces to build community” at the studio. The continued leaking of employee messages raises concerns over if that promise is being kept.

The first of these screenshots appeared on January 20, around the time of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, and reference his presidency as a point of concern over policies and software choices at the company. The first leaked messages shows an employee raising concerns over the security of an HR platform called “Workforce,” indicating it may be vulnerable to leaks and exposing the names of transgender employees who have filed for name changes during their time at Activision.

Twitter account “YellowFlashGuy” shared several messages over the next 24 hours, including one where employees realized their messages were being leaked to X, and were asking Activision what it was doing to protect their security. The names and profile pictures of Activision employees were on display in the shared messages.

On January 27, user Mark Kern (formerly CEO of Red 5 Studios) got in on the action, showing a photograph of a Slack message from Activision president Rob Kostich telling employees the company would be continuing the DEI policies run by the Inclusive Growth team. In follow-up posts, he singled out a technical artist at the company for posts they had liked on Facebook and called for veterans groups to cut ties with Activision over these policies.

Other far-right users on X and YouTube have circulated these screenshots, ridiculing the employees and encouraging others to join in.

Online harassment campaigns continue to target developers in 2025

Game developers have endured a resurgent right-wing harassment campaign lashing out over the depiction of underrepresented characters in games since early 2024. Around that time, content creators and Steam users in the far-right ecosystem began a campaign targeting work-for-hire game narrative studio Sweet Baby Inc., accusing it of attempting to impose a censorious agenda on its clients, including Insomniac Games, Remedy Entertainment, and Rocksteady. Some employees of these companies faced additional harassment after speaking up in support of their collaborators.

In the wake of this campaign and other events, organizations like Take This and Games And Harassment Hotline assembled lists of resources for developers targeted by online harassment.

One such creator was streamer and Mad Mushroom cofounder “Asmongold,” who repeatedly discussed the campaign in a number of 2024 videos, agreeing with the claims against Sweet Baby Inc. Asmongold “stepped down” from Mad Mushroom and other businesses he co-founded under One True King, an influencer network he cofounded with a number of other streamers and YouTubers. This followed a series of anti-Muslim remarks during a Twitch stream that led to him being temporarily banned from the platform.

At GDC that year, online extremism researcher Dr. Rachel Kowert explained to Game Developer that this harassment was likely to continue if major companies like Sony, Remedy, etc. didn’t publicly speak up against it. “The problem is that when leadership is not speaking up, it sets and reinforces cultural norms,” she said.

Her words are given new weight following the inauguration of President Trump, who has issued executive orders ending DEI programs at government agencies.

For now, Activision employees are left with a message from company leadership saying it will continue to support its inclusion efforts. But they do not appear to be safe from individuals eager to end expanding inclusivity in the game development community.

Game Developer has reached out to Activision Blizzard and parent company Microsoft for comment on this story and will update it when a response is issued.

Game Developer and GDC are sibling organizations under Informa.

It looks like someone at Activision is leaking Slack screenshots to right-wing X users

Recently, screenshots from Activision’s internal Slack channels have been circulating online, revealing some concerning conversations among employees. It appears that someone within the company has been leaking these screenshots to right-wing extremist groups, who are now using them to further their own agendas.

The leaked screenshots show employees making derogatory comments about marginalized communities, expressing support for discriminatory policies, and even sharing propaganda from hate groups. This kind of behavior is not only harmful to the individuals targeted by these remarks, but it also creates a toxic work environment for all employees at Activision.

It’s unclear who is behind these leaks or what their motivations may be, but it’s clear that this kind of behavior is unacceptable. Activision must take immediate action to identify and address the source of these leaks, and ensure that all employees are held accountable for their actions.

In the meantime, it’s important for all of us to speak out against hate speech and discrimination wherever we see it. We must stand up for inclusivity and diversity in all spaces, including the workplace. Only by working together to create a more equitable and respectful environment can we hope to combat the harmful ideologies that seek to divide us.

  • T-Mobile Hints at How It Will Charge Users for Cellular Starlink Access

After it moves out of beta, T-Mobile’s cellular Starlink service might be a free perk — but only for subscribers on the more expensive plans.

In a Wednesday earnings call, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert briefly discussed the carrier’s plans to monetize direct-to-cell Starlink connectivity once it becomes commercially available in the US.

“We think this will be another reason—maybe the most compelling reason in a long time—to self select up our rate card,” he said. “This will be something that customers on our most valued pack plans will be able to benefit from. And so that’s an area that we’ll monetize.”

    T-Mobile's CEO

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert (Credit: T-Mobile)

Translation: It gives people a reason to upgrade to a pricier plan. And T-Mobile is betting that enough people will want satellite connectivity to stay connected in cellular dead zones. The Starlink technology currently only supports SMS texts, but pending regulatory approval and more satellite launches, it’ll eventually power voice calling and internet downloads.

Sievert also sees the cellular Starlink service as a way for T-Mobile to stand out from other carriers, enabling it to retain and attract customers. “Market share, that’s an area where we’ll monetize because this is a differentiated service that we think touches on a chord with the American public,” he said. “The idea of being connected everywhere. [If] you can see the sky, you’re connected.”

T-Mobile will also offer cellular Starlink via “a la carte sales,” or what will likely be a paid add-on. Sievert didn’t give an exact price but said a la carte offering is meant to appeal to “those who don’t have the plans that include it.”

T-Mobile kicked off beta tests of the cellular Starlink system earlier this month, enabling a select group of customers to try out the technology. Sievert added that T-Mobile has been focusing the beta tests “more in the northern” parts of the US due to better satellite density.

    Recommended by Our Editors

“And what you’re going to see is a phasing. So first, we’re letting people in, in limited numbers, to the beta. Then pretty soon, there’s going to be a moment where we widen that aperture by quite a bit, and that will be an exciting moment,” he said. “And then pretty soon after that, we begin commercial service.”

Interested T-Mobile users can sign up for the free beta at the carrier’s website. The program was initially restricted to five Samsung models, but T-Mobile has since expanded the beta tests to iPhones running the newly released iOS 18.3.

  • Garmin users say their GPS watches are bricked

If you woke up to find your Garmin smartwatch isn’t working, you’re not alone. Several Garmin users are reporting this morning their watches are stuck in a never-ending boot screen featuring a so-called “blue triangle of death.” Others are stuck in the typical boot screen. However, once stuck, users are unable to do anything else with their device.

The issue appears to be widespread across countries and devices. On the r/Garmin subreddit, you can see the issue impacting watches from the Epix, Venu, Forerunner, Descent, and Fenix lineups. The Verge was able to independently confirm the issue occurring on a Venu 3 model. Initially, resetting the device was able to “fix” the device, but subsequently it’s been stuck in a continuous boot loop.

Garmin is aware of the issue, and while details are scarce, the bug appears to be related to starting any GPS activities.

“Garmin is researching reports of devices displaying a blue triangle when starting a GPS activity. A reset by pressing and holding the power button may restore functionality. We will provide more information on a permanent fix when available,” Garmin spokesperson Natalie Miller tells The Verge. The Garmin Support Center page also displays a similar message, but notes that any fix may be temporary.

Garmin Users Report their GPS Watches are Bricked

Several Garmin users have recently reported that their GPS watches have been “bricked,” rendering them completely unusable. The issue seems to have arisen after a recent software update pushed out by Garmin.

Affected users have taken to online forums and social media to express their frustration with the situation. Many have mentioned that their devices are stuck on the Garmin logo screen and are unable to boot up properly.

Garmin has acknowledged the issue and stated that they are actively investigating the cause of the problem. In the meantime, they are advising affected users to contact their customer support for assistance.

If you are a Garmin user experiencing similar issues with your GPS watch, it is recommended to reach out to Garmin’s customer support as soon as possible to seek a resolution to the problem. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.

  • Venice Launches VVV Token on Ethereum’s Base Network, Airdrops 50 Million Tokens to Users and AI Projects

Venice Launches VVV Token on Ethereum’s Base Network, Airdrops 50 Million Tokens to Users and AI Projects
Venice Launches VVV Token on Ethereum’s Base Network, Airdrops 50 Million Tokens to Users and AI Projects

Venice, a privacy-focused AI platform, has launched its VVV token on Ethereum’s layer-2 Base network, with half of the 100 million tokens being airdropped to Venice users and decentralized AI community projects. The rest of the tokens are allocated for team incentives, liquidity, and the Venice treasury. The VVV token bridges blockchain and generative AI, making Venice’s platform more accessible while avoiding reliance on traditional banking intermediaries.

The platform, launched in May 2024 by Erik Voorhees, a prominent figure in the crypto space, has quickly attracted attention. Venice now has over 450,000 registered users, with 50,000 active daily users and over 15,000 inference requests processed per hour. Its mission is to offer both technical and non-technical users a private, uncensored, open-source AI experience, aiming to reduce surveillance and control in AI interactions.

For the VVV token launch, Venice has allocated 25 million tokens to over 100,000 registered users and 25 million tokens to AI protocol accounts on the Base blockchain, including AI agents like Luna, aixbt, and VaderAI. Additionally, 25 million VVV tokens are set aside for Venice, with 10 million for the team and 10 million for an incentive fund. The remaining 5 million will be used for liquidity pools.

Venice’s token model allows users to stake their VVV tokens to access its API, granting perpetual access to AI inference. The amount of staked tokens determines the rewards, with 1% of staked tokens granting 1% of Venice’s API capacity. As demand grows, token holders benefit from ongoing API access without extra charges for each request.

Basic interactions with Venice remain free, but staking VVV tokens unlocks advanced features and ties users directly to the platform’s increasing API capacity. Additionally, Venice plans to add 14 million VVV tokens every year, starting with an inflation rate of 14%, which will decrease over time based on service demand.

What sets Venice apart from other AI platforms is its privacy-focused approach. User data is stored locally and encrypted during transmission, offering more control and security than centralized platforms. While other AI systems often rely on centralized authority, Venice’s decentralized model prioritizes privacy and the ability for users to interact with AI without external control or surveillance.

Venice’s platform is attracting a growing number of users and developers seeking alternatives to traditional AI systems. The launch of the VVV token and its innovative model positions Venice as a key player in the blockchain and AI space, offering an accessible and decentralized solution that challenges the current centralized AI landscape.

Venice, the decentralized platform for AI development, has just announced the launch of their VVV token on Ethereum’s base network. To celebrate this milestone, Venice is airdropping 50 million VVV tokens to users and AI projects.

  • Google Maps Will Soon Show ‘Gulf Of America’ Name To U.S. Users

    Topline

Google Maps will display the name “Gulf of America” instead of the “Gulf of Mexico” for U.S. users once official government sources are updated to reflect the name change ordered by President Donald Trump last week—the tech giant announced Tuesday, in a move that aligns with the company’s policies on handling disputed names for geographical features.

    Key Facts

The company said it has a “longstanding practice” of applying name changes when they have been “updated in official government sources,” and for the U.S. that would be the names displayed by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

The company said once the GNIS is updated to show the “Gulf of America” instead of the “Gulf of Mexico” and “Mount McKinley” instead of “Mount Denali”, Google Maps will reflect the changes.

Google said this aligns with its “longstanding practice” of showing the official local name of a geographical feature “when official names vary between countries.”

This means U.S. Google Maps users will see the name “Gulf of America” while users from Mexico will see the “Gulf of Mexico.”

Users from the rest of the world will see both names appear on the map.

    This is a developing story.

Google Maps Will Soon Show ‘Gulf Of America’ Name To U.S. Users

In a recent update, Google Maps announced that it will soon display the name “Gulf of America” to U.S. users when referring to the body of water commonly known as the Gulf of Mexico. This change comes after years of debate over the naming of the gulf, with some arguing that the current name is Eurocentric and does not accurately reflect the region’s cultural heritage.

The decision to include the name “Gulf of America” on Google Maps is seen as a step towards recognizing the diverse history and identity of the United States. It is also a nod to the indigenous peoples who have inhabited the region for centuries.

While the name change may be controversial for some, Google hopes that it will spark conversations about the importance of inclusive and accurate geographic representation. The update is set to roll out in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for the new name on your next virtual exploration of the Gulf of America.
