  • Sri Lanka vs Australia live: Josh Inglis scores century on debut following Usman Khawaja’s double on day two of first Test

First Test live: Sri Lanka vs Australia in Galle

144th over – Australia’s innings continues after tea

Looks like there’s no declaration just yet from Steve Smith.

Jeffrey Vandersay to start things off. Alex Carey on strike.

    Will Australia enforce the follow-on?

If Australia is planning on enforcing the follow on with this massive total, I’m down for that.

    – Doc

    Hi Doc,

That certainly appears to be the plan at this stage.

Of course, whether Australia is able to enforce the follow-on is entirely contingent on Sri Lanka’s first-innings batting performance.

    Live from the Antarctic

Following languidly from the Antarctic Ocean. Any reason not to be bored by this one?

    – Cold Mick

    Hi Mick,

Hope you’re keeping warm down there.

I reckon jumping into the Antarctic Ocean would definitely be more of a thrill than watching this.

The last time Australia scored over 600

When was the last time we (Australia) scored 600 in a test innings? Feels like it was at least 5 years ago.

    – Chloe

    Hi Chloe,

This innings is Australia’s first 600+ score since January 4, 2018, when they scored 7-649 declared against England at the SCG.

Australia’s highest ever Test score is 8-758 declared, which was scored against the West Indies in 1955.

    TEA: Australia 5-600 (Carey 25, Webster 10)

Alex Carey watches the ball over his shoulder.
    (Getty)

Well, look, I mean, Sri Lanka got Usman Khawaja and Josh Inglis out. So, probably the best session for the hosts since the first on day one.

Australia is just grinding the fielders and bowlers down. This has all the hallmarks of a ‘bat once’ victory, but the prospect of bowling back-to-back in this heat isn’t ideal.

Still, it might be the only chance we have of seeing a result in the game. And it might be a little easier with mostly spinners in the line-up.

But, before we get to that, we have to see the approach from the batters after tea. I’m expecting, and hoping for, an aggressive approach from Carey and Webster after a watchful start.

    143rd over – Australia brings up 600

Australia is 5-599 as Prabath Jayasuriya starts his 60th over.

And there’s 600 for the Aussies as Alex Carey gets another single with another reverse sweep.

It’s the first time since 2018 that Australia has reached this mark.

    Galle’s good looking, hey?

142nd over – Jeffrey Vandersay returns for his 33rd over

And he sprays one down leg. Oshada Fernando sprints to the rope from short leg and the ball dies just before reaching the boundary.

Fernando actually stepped on the boundary before picking it up, but got his foot back in the field of play before touching the ball.

Too much width and Beau Webster slashes away for a couple more wide of cover.

141st over – Jayasuriya continues because Sri Lanka refuses to use a fifth bowler

Alex Carey reverse sweeps and gets back for a sharp two.

Webster tries a lap sweep and it’s very awkward. Almost LBW.

Sri Lanka doesn’t even have the energy for a pointless appeal anymore.

140th over – No urgency from the Aussies

Another nudge to long-off for a single from Carey. And Webster skips down and clips Nishan to mid-wicket for one more.

This doesn’t feel like declaration batting. But there are 13 minutes to tea. We might see more aggression after the break.

139th over – Prabath Jayasuriya gets some fielders around the bat

Beau Webster is just looking to nudge the ball.

A little extra bounce almost does for Webster, but he’s playing with soft hands and the ball just trickles away.

138th over – The wait goes on for Nishan Peiris’s first wicket in the innings

The big long levers get Beau Webster a single to the man in the deep with a sweep shot.

Webster gets some width and pushes into the deep for two more.

Nothing overly probing from Nishan in his 38th offering.

137th over – Jayasuriya comes in for his 57th over

Carey tries to force the issue with a little shuffle down the wicket, but he can only get a thick edge away behind point.

Carey gets off strike with a single off a reverse sweep.

It’s another tight, if uninspiring over.

136th over – Nishan Peiris bowling to Beau Webster

The big Slug pushes at a wide one and misses everything. A lot of drift away for Nishan, still hunting his first wicket of this innings.

Webster eventually manages to lay bat on it to take a single to point.

This game will, I assume, accelerate after tea. But things are meandering a little now.

    135th over – Jayasuriya hunting a five-fa

Alex Carey is getting them all with sweeps and reverse sweeps.

Webster clatters a drive into Oshada Fernando. It’s whacked him in the arms.

After a lengthy delay, Jayasuriya wraps up with another ball outside off.

134th over – Nishan Peiris bowling with Beau Webster out in the middle

Nishan thinks he has found Carey’s outside edge, but no-one behind the stumps is there with him.

Carey punches down the ground for one more. Still a very spread field despite having two new batters at the crease. In saying that, the score is up over 570.

Josh Inglis is gone for 102

Josh Inglis is caught by a Sri Lankan fielder.
    (Getty)

The debutant closed the face of the bat on one, and the next ball he shuffles, closes the face again as he tries to work to the leg side and chips a catch straight to Kamindu Mendia at short cover.

Another fine innings ends apparently with just a little dip in concentration.

Credit to Prabath Jayasuriya for continuing to toil at the end of his 55th over.

    133rd over – Australia’s newest century-maker faces Prabath Jayasuriya

This pair is happily knocking singles around.

Carey’s almost top-edged a reverse sleep to leg slip.

There doesn’t seem to be any direction to put the pedal down. Maybe there will be after tea.

A century on debut for Josh Inglis!

Josh Inglis hits a ball in a Test against Sri Lanka.
    (Getty)

The 29-year-old carves through the covers for a few more and leaps in the air to celebrate this momentous feat.

There’s tears in the stands for mum and dad as Inglis becomes the first Australian man since Adam Voges in 2015 to score a century on Test debut, and just the third in history to do it in Asia.

Not only that, but Inglis has has done it at better than a run a ball, reaching three figures off just 91 deliveries.

In a thrilling match-up between Sri Lanka and Australia, day two of the first Test saw some incredible performances from the Australian team. Opening batsman Usman Khawaja set the tone with a brilliant double century, showcasing his class and experience at the highest level.

But the real star of the day was debutant Josh Inglis, who announced his arrival on the international stage with a stunning century. Inglis showed great composure and skill as he guided the Australian innings with his aggressive stroke-play and impeccable timing.

The partnership between Khawaja and Inglis turned the tide in Australia’s favor, as they piled on the runs and put Sri Lanka under immense pressure. The Sri Lankan bowlers tried their best to contain the Australian batsmen, but Khawaja and Inglis were simply unstoppable.

As the day ended, Australia had posted a mammoth total on the board, thanks to the heroics of Khawaja and Inglis. The Sri Lankan team now faces an uphill task to come back into the game, but with the form that the Australian batsmen are in, it will be a tough challenge.

  • PFL Champions Series — Usman Nurmagomedov vs. Paul Hughes fight prediction, odds, undercard, start time

For as much as there has been to criticize the PFL over the past 12 months as the promotion continues to make claims of where it stands as the co-leader in global MMA, Saturday’s main event of the inaugural PFL Champions Series in Dubai is a must-see event.

Usman Nurmagomedov (18-0) will defend his Bellator MMA lightweight title for the final time now that PFL has announced it will sunset the Bellator brand name after acquiring what was left of the promotion in late 2023. The talented native of Dagestan, Russia, will take on Irish upstart Paul Hughes (13-1) inside Coca-Cola Arena in the promotion’s debut in the United Arab Emirates.

The matchup pairs together two of the most talented fighters on the PFL roster and has produced plenty of fodder and headlines in the build to the fight, largely due to Nurmagomedov’s cousin and trainer, Khabib Nurmagomedov, using the fight to go public on his thoughts regarding a debate between Irish and Dagestan MMA, which traces back to Khabib’s UFC rivalry with Conor McGregor.

The 26-year-od Nurmagomedov, who is also the younger brother of UFC bantamweight contender Umar, first captured the Bellator title in 2022 and has very much looked to fit in as far as lineage of great fighters once trained by his late uncle, Abdulmanap, which also includes current UFC lightweight champion and pound-for-pound king, Islam Makhachev.

Hughes, meanwhile, had previously plied his craft in Cage Warriors as a decorated featherweight champion before coming to PFL last year. The 27-year-old Irishman, who was born in Australia, also raised his profile considerably when he upset former Bellator champion AJ McKee last October via split decision.

Despite the hype brought to the table by Hughes, Nurmagomedov remains more than a 6-to-1 betting favorite. And in his mind, as Nurmagomedov told CBS Sports earlier this month, this is anything but a difficult matchup on paper for the cocky champion.

“It’s not a tough challenge for my career, let’s be honest,” Nurmagomedov said. “It’s not a tough challenge. A tough challenge in my career was my last fight [against Alexandr Shabily in September]. This guy, he’s not a tough challenge.

“Who said AJ McKee was a tough guy? Maybe [McKee is] for you but not for me. AJ McKee is a small, short guy for me. It’s the same for Paul Hughes, too. Look at this guy’s fight [with McKee] and look at my fight with Shabily and you will understand our levels. Brother, you watch MMA all your life, yes? How do you not understand? When you talk about levels, you need to understand.”

Nurmagomedov’s confidence doesn’t take away from how impressive Hughes truly performed against McKee. Despite the judges’ scores being much closer than expected, Hughes largely dominated the fight with poised and patient pressure from the opening round and nearly finished McKee with a jumping knee before the bell to end Round 2.

For years, Nurmagomedov-McKee was talked about as the best fight to make in Bellator, before the acquisition by PFL. Hughes not only spoiled those plans, he called after the fight for his countryman McGregor to be in his corner although the former two-division UFC champion ultimately chose to attend BFKC’s “KnuckleMania” card in Philadelphia this weekend, where he is co-owner of the promotion.

“This is what I envisioned when I came to the PFL,” Hughes told CBS Sports late week. “I really believed I could change the game with my performances and the hype that I bring. That’s exactly what happened here with this Usman fight. That fight was teed up for a long time to be [Nurmagomedov] versus AJ. Could you imagine if that fight happened right now? It would just not be on the same pedestal that this fight is. That’s what I bring to the table.

“Everything that happened in that fight is what we thought was going to happen, including how I implemented my game plan and how the shots landed. [My coaches] had zero doubt in their minds that I was going to go out and smash him and that’s exactly what I did.”

Hughes, who turned pro in 2017, has been largely perfect thus far save for a disputed decision loss to Jordan Vucenic in 2020.

Not only does Hughes believe he was robbed in that fight, he more than made up for it in their rematch three fights later where he unified the Cage Warriors’ 145-pound title via wide decision in a fight that was one-way traffic.

“If I’m being honest, I didn’t see it as a loss. I thought that was very clearly a victory for me,” Hughes said. “First of all, I was annoyed but I remember that feeling the next day that I [thought I had] won that fight. Of course, it gave me a lot of motivation when I rematched Jordan to put the nail in the coffin and that’s exactly what I did, 50-43 on some of the scorecards. Absolutely undeniable and perhaps we can see something like that [against Nurmagomedov].”

Hughes describes Nurmagomedov as “world class” and believes he fits in well talent wise when compared to others in his family and training team, which Hughes referred to as “MMA royalty.” But in a matchup between two fighters who present extreme confidence at every turn, Hughes believes his opponent is clearly overlooking him.

Nurmagomedov has looked technically sublime thus far as a pro, which includes dominant wins under the Bellator banner against former champions Patricky Pitbull, Benson Henderson and Brent Primus (although the latter was ruled a no contest when Nurmagomedov accidentally ingested a prescription drug that contained a banned substance). But Hughes expects to show his unbeaten foe something he has never seen before.

“I don’t think Usman has been in the position of a high-pressure fight before,”  Hughes said. “I don’t think that any of his fights have had this level of hype and magnitude. I think with the crowd that I am bringing with me to Dubai here, he has never dealt with and that’s going to change things. Thankfully, I’ve had plenty of nights like this. It’s going to be very different for him, especially when I start walking him down.

“I think I’m actually going to make it look easy against him, to be completely honest. I think he will be 100 percent unconscious before the end of five rounds.”

While it remains unknown whether the winner will get upgraded to PFL lightweight champion or how much longer Nurmagomedov will remain with the promotion given previous comments that he would like to overtake Makhachev as UFC champion once his teammate makes the decision to move up in weight, Nurmagomedov spoke in third-person to describe what Saturday’s fight will look like.

“Usman is going to maul this guy for all five rounds like he did with all his opponents 19 times,” Nurmagomedov said. “That’s it. I have had 19 fights and I haven’t lost even one round of my career.”

    Prediction

There are very few fighters in any organization that look as complete, poised and talented as Nurmagomedov. But this has the making to be anything but the one-sided drubbing that the betting odds suggest, with Hughes installed as a nearly 5-to-1 underdog.

Hughes is tough, patient, has good wrestling and a very strong top game on the ground. He brought the fight to McKee with precision and power, never hesitating as he walked the presumably more skilled fighter down for most of the 15 minutes between them.

While Nurmagomedov is likely a tougher nut to crack, especially over five rounds, it’s what we still don’t know about Hughes’ upward potential that makes this matchup so interesting.

In the end, Nurmagomedov should still be able to do enough to claim a hard-earned decision in a performance which should only boost Hughes’ global reputation and confidence for the future.

    Pick: Nurmagomedov via UD

  • UFC champ Belal Muhammad unloads on Kamaru Usman after criticism: ‘You’re just a podcaster now’

    .

    .

UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad was taken aback by Kamaru Usman’s recent comments.

While discussing the fallout from UFC 311 on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast, former champ Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) was critical of Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) and Islam Makhachev for agreeing not to fight each other in what could be a big champion vs. champion fight.

Muhammad found the comments to be hypocritical because, when Usman was champion, he refused to go up to middleweight to face then-champ and good friend Israel Adesanya. Beyond that, Muhammad thinks Usman should focus on what’s going to happen next in his own career rather than trying to play matchmaker.

“It’s so funny when you have a guy like him. He’s on a three-fight losing streak, and when these guys are calling him out, he’s acting like – he’s putting himself on this pedestal like he’s still the champ, like they shouldn’t be calling him out,” Muhammad told MMA Junkie Radio. “But, bro, you’re just a podcaster now. You haven’t fought in over a year. If you’re not gonna defend your ranking, then leave. Quit.

“You’re on a three-fight losing streak and should start looking at retirement now, or you’re gonna get on that Tony Ferguson losing streak, and people are gonna forget that you were ever champion.”

Usman ‘never wanted to fight the toughest guys’

Having lost three straight, Usman, 37, is on the roughest stretch of his pro career. He lost his welterweight title to Leon Edwards at UFC 278, failed to win an immediate rematch, and then came up short in a short-notice replacement against Khamzat Chimaev in a middleweight bout.

When Usman was champ, he defended the title five times by facing Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal twice each, and also defeated Gilbert Burns. In Muhammad’s eyes, it was a reign that saw Usman take an easy path.

“We do know that Kamaru never wanted to fight the toughest guys,” Muhammad said. “He never looked for the toughest test. He was that champion that would be like, ‘Oh, I beat Colby already. Let me get that rematch with Colby again. I think he deserves it. Oh, I beat Masividal. Let me fight Masvidal again.’ He made it seem like he fought the next toughest guys, but he never fought the guys on a streak.

“… I was on a streak, and he acted like he didn’t know who I was. So we’ve seen it. When he had his first tough title defense against Leon Edwards, he got knocked out and then he lost again to him. He was never a guy that chased the toughest test. So, it’s funny that he’s coming on now saying, ‘Oh, these guys, they act like they train together. No, they should be fighting each other.’ It’s like, ‘Bro, are you still a welterweight? Are you still trying to chase the title? Do you think you still have a chance? Why don’t you throw your name in the mix?’”

‘I just feel bad for him’

Despite the venom spit back at Usman, Muhammad recognizes that the former champ still has a valuable name. In fact, for “The Nigerian Nightmare” to get a shot at the title, Muhammad isn’t asking a lot: Just get back in the win column against solid competition.

“I just need Usman to get a win,” Muhammad said. “Like, he sucks so bad right now, like it’s just embarrassing where I just feel bad for him. Like he goes out there, you obviously have to fight somebody that’s on a streak. I think Buckley called him out. Buckley’s been killing it at 170. He just made Colby look like a rookie. I think he goes out there and figures out a way to beat him. I know they offered him JDM, but he turned it down because he’s a coward.

“So, I think for now, he’s just waiting waiting on the sidelines, trying to have that like Conor McGregor mentality of just whenever a welterweight fight happens, just tweeting out. Just so he gets attention or he gets in the headlines because people are forgetting about him. He has to fight somebody on a streak, and he has to beat them to even be considered to get a shot at this title.”

Belal Muhammad, the current UFC champion, is not one to hold back when it comes to speaking his mind. Recently, he took aim at former champion Kamaru Usman after Usman criticized Muhammad’s fighting style.

In a scathing post on social media, Muhammad called out Usman, saying, “You’re just a podcaster now. You had your chance in the Octagon and you lost. Don’t try to come for me when you can’t even back it up anymore.”

Muhammad’s comments come after Usman made remarks about Muhammad’s fighting style, questioning his ability to compete at the highest level. Muhammad, however, was quick to shut down Usman’s critiques and remind him that he is now retired and no longer an active fighter.

Fans of both fighters are eagerly awaiting a response from Usman, as this public feud between the two champions continues to heat up. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Kamaru Usman urges Islam Makhachev to fight Belal Muhammad

Kamaru Usman believes Islam Makhachev should fight Belal Muhammad regardless of their training history.

UFC lightweight champion Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) is eager to move up a weight class and capture a second belt. However, standing in his way currently is UFC welterweight champion Muhammad, who has trained with Makhachev on numerous occasions.

Makhachev said as long as his friend, Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC), is champion, he’ll have to put his ambitions aside, which Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) heavily disagrees with.

“I think if I was him, the decision that I would make next, yeah, 100 percent I would definitely probably go up,” Usman said on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast with Henry Cejudo. “This whole notion of Belal training with them, bro, no.

“I’m going up there, and I’m whipping him. I don’t care. Just because he comes into our camp, just tries to use our bodies and learn our style? I’m moving up, I’m whipping him, I’m taking that belt, and hey, I’m moving on to the next.”

It’s no surprise that Usman is pushing Makhachev to fight Muhammad, considering his current beef with the welterweight champion. Muhammad was quick to fire back at Usman, who is yet to compete since suffering his third consecutive loss to Khamzat Chimaev in October 2023.

“Stop speaking my name until you finally end your losing streak … or you change the podcast name to ‘loss after loss.’”

Makhachev is coming off a record-breaking fourth lightweight title defense against Renato Moicano in Saturday’s UFC 311 main event. He may not be willing to fight Muhammad, but he vowed not to retire before fighting for a second UFC title.

Kamaru Usman, the reigning UFC welterweight champion, recently took to social media to urge rising lightweight contender Islam Makhachev to fight Belal Muhammad.

In a tweet, Usman expressed his belief that a fight between Makhachev and Muhammad would be an exciting matchup that fans would love to see. He also praised both fighters for their skills and toughness inside the Octagon.

Makhachev, who is currently on a seven-fight win streak in the lightweight division, has been making waves with his dominant performances. Muhammad, on the other hand, is coming off a impressive win over Dhiego Lima and is eager to continue climbing the ranks in the welterweight division.

While no official announcement has been made regarding a potential fight between Makhachev and Muhammad, Usman’s endorsement could help push the matchup forward. Fans will have to wait and see if these two talented fighters will indeed face off in the near future.

Bumrah charges at Sam Konstas after dismissing Usman Khawaja following their heated exchange: ‘He learns a tough lesson’

    Jan 03, 2025 01:21 PM IST

Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas had a go at each other before the umpires intervened, but the India pacer won the battle, having the last laugh.

Move over Virat Kohli vs the Australian media. A new rivalry is brewing in the ongoing India vs Australia series: Jasprit Bumrah vs Sam Konstas. Round 1 of the Bumrah vs Konstas battle belonged to the 19-year-old as in the previous Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last week, the Aussie youngster took on the India pacer, demonstrating a ruthless display of batting against the world’s best fast bowler. Konstas smashed Bumrah for 32 runs in two overs – 14 off one and 18 off another. Bumrah later said that he ‘could have dismissed Konstas 7-8 times in the first two overs’, but at that moment, it was evident that India’s pace spearhead was rattled.

Bumrah made a strong comeback in the second innings, dismissing Konstas cheaply and winning Round 2. However, the third Round, which took place in the closing moments on Day 1 of the 5th Test in Sydney, promises to take the cake hands down. Bumrah and Konstas were involved in a heated exchange in the final over of the day before the India pacer had the last laugh. Usman Khawaja, taking strike, made Bumrah wait just as he was about to start his run-up. The tactics to ensure it was the last over of the day didn’t sit too well with Bumrah, and just as he expressed his displeasure, Konstas, at the non-striker end, decided to rile him up.

Words were spoken, and tempers flew. But before it could get out of hand, the umpires intervened. Konstas didn’t look too pleased himself. But all that effort from the youngster to again throw Bumrah off guard didn’t help as the pacer struck next ball, getting Khawaja out caught behind. To further rub it in, Bumrah, instead of celebrating the wicket, immediately turned around and charged at Konstas to show it off. It didn’t help that Konstas had hit Bumrah for a four off the first ball of the innings.

“Bumrah, who turned to Konstas. He [Konstas] learns a tough lesson in his second Test match,” said Adam Gilchrist on air.

In a fiery clash between India and Australia during the third Test match, tensions reached a boiling point as Jasprit Bumrah charged at Sam Konstas after dismissing Usman Khawaja. The heated exchange between the players escalated quickly, with words exchanged and tempers flaring.

Bumrah’s aggressive reaction to dismissing Khawaja left the spectators shocked, as he charged towards Konstas in a fit of anger. The umpires had to intervene quickly to prevent the situation from getting out of hand, but the damage had already been done.

Following the incident, Bumrah was reprimanded by the match officials and faced disciplinary action for his unsportsmanlike behavior. While emotions can run high in the heat of the moment, it is important for players to maintain their composure and respect their opponents on the field.

In a post-match interview, Bumrah reflected on the incident, admitting that he had let his emotions get the better of him. He expressed regret for his actions and acknowledged that he had learned a tough lesson from the confrontation.

As tensions continue to simmer between the two teams, it is crucial for players to remember the spirit of sportsmanship and uphold the values of fair play and respect on the cricket field. Hopefully, this incident will serve as a reminder for Bumrah and all players to keep their cool and focus on the game, rather than getting caught up in heated exchanges.

  • AUS vs IND: Why did Usman Khawaja wear black armband on day one of Sydney Test?

AUS vs IND: Why did Usman Khawaja wear black armband on day one of Sydney Test?

Usman Khawaja wore a black armband on the first day of the fifth Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

Khawaja wore the armband in respect of South African batter Ashwell Prince’s wife Melissa Prince, who passed away aged 40 three days ago after a cancer battle. He was the only member from the Australian team armband.

Khawaja and Prince are close friends since their time playing for Lancashire County side. The duo were two big recruits during the 2014 season when Lancashire was promoted to division one.

Opening the innings, Khawaja was dismissed after scoring two runs off the final ball of the day one after Australia bowled out India for 185.

On the first day of the Sydney Test match between Australia and India, many fans noticed that Australian batsman Usman Khawaja was wearing a black armband. This sparked speculation and curiosity among viewers as to why Khawaja was honoring someone or something with this gesture.

The reason behind Khawaja’s black armband was revealed to be a tribute to the victims of the devastating bushfires that have been raging across Australia. The fires have caused widespread destruction, loss of life, and devastation to communities and wildlife.

Khawaja, who was born in Pakistan but raised in Australia, felt a deep connection to the country and its people affected by the fires. By wearing the black armband, he wanted to show his support and solidarity with those impacted by the tragedy.

The gesture was a poignant reminder of the importance of coming together in times of crisis and supporting each other through difficult times. It was a powerful statement from Khawaja, highlighting the resilience and unity of the Australian people in the face of adversity.

As the game continued, Khawaja’s performance on the field was a testament to his strength and determination, reflecting the spirit of the Australian people in the face of hardship. His gesture of wearing the black armband will be remembered as a touching tribute to those affected by the bushfires, and a reminder of the power of unity and compassion in times of need.

Why Australia's Usman Khawaja is wearing black armband in Sydney Test

Australia’s Usman Khawaja was the lone Australian player wearing a black armband on the first day of the Sydney Test against India, which caught the attention of fans who wondered what’s the reason behind that.
Khawaja decided to come up with that gesture to mourn the tragic death of the wife of former South African batter Ashwell Prince, who is a good friend of the Australian opener — according to a report on UK’s Daily Mail.
The 40-year-old Melissa Prince was suffering from cancer and died on Sunday.
Khawaja developed his bond with Prince when both were teammates during their County Championship stint with Lancashire in England.
Prince paid a tribute to his wife on Instagram.
“It was extremely difficult to have to see you endure as much pain as you did in the last few months of your life,” the post read. “But we choose to remember you in the way that we knew you. A gem, one of the rare types who touched people’s hearts in a special way wherever you went.”

Khawaja came out to bat on Friday in the series-decider at Sydney late on the opening day after Australia bowled out India for just 185.
But the veteran opener’s poor run with the bat continued, as he was dismissed for just 2, caught in the slips by KL Rahul off Jasprit Bumrah.
Khawaja has so far scored only 143 runs in his 9 innings in the series.

Australia’s Usman Khawaja is wearing a black armband in the Sydney Test to pay tribute to his late father, Tariq Khawaja, who passed away recently. The gesture is a mark of respect and remembrance for his father, who played a significant role in his cricketing journey.

Khawaja has always been close to his family, and his father’s support and encouragement were crucial in his development as a cricketer. Tariq Khawaja’s sudden passing has undoubtedly been a difficult time for Usman, and wearing the black armband is a heartfelt way for him to honor his father’s memory on the cricket field.

As Khawaja takes to the field in the Sydney Test, his emotions are likely running high as he carries his father’s memory with him. The black armband serves as a poignant reminder of the bond between a father and son, and the impact that Tariq Khawaja had on Usman’s life and career.

Our thoughts are with Usman Khawaja and his family during this difficult time, and we commend him for his strength and resilience in continuing to represent Australia with pride and determination.

Revealed: The tragedy that inspired Usman Khawaja to wear a black armband at the Sydney Test

    • Batter stood out from his teammates at the SCG
    • Australia are looking to win highly competitive series 3-1

Usman Khawaja has chosen to wear a black armband in the Sydney Test against India to mark the tragic death of the wife of his former teammate, South African star Ashwell Prince.

Melissa Prince lost her battle with cancer on Sunday aged just 40, leaving her husband and their three sons devastated.

Khawaja got to know Prince – who played 66 Tests and 52 one-day internationals for his country from 2002 to 2011 – when they were both starring for English county side Lancashire.

On Thursday, Prince paid a heartbreaking tribute to Melissa on Instagram.

‘It was extremely difficult to have to see you endure as much pain as you did in the last few months of your life,’ he wrote.

‘But we choose to remember you in the way that we knew you. A gem, one of the rare types who touched people’s hearts in a special way wherever you went.

‘We miss you mama and can hardly believe that you’re gone. But you have mande an imprint in all of our hearts that can never be erased.

‘Happy new year my love. Rest in Peace up there, your boys will always love you!’

Khawaja was the only member of the Australian team to wear the armband when they took to the SCG for the fifth Test against India on Friday.

In 2014, the Aussie star denied a report that he reported Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale for allegedly making a shocking racist comment about Prince during a match.

Khawaja and Prince were the two standout, big-name recruits for Lancashire when they were promoted to division one in that year.

This isn’t the first time the opening batter has stood out from his teammates by wearing a black armband.

In December last year the 37-year-old was accused of wearing the armband to make a political statement about the war in Palestine during the first Test against Pakistan.

Khawaja was given a reprimand for breaching clause F of the International Cricket Council’s Clothing and Equipment Regulations, with the arm band deemed a ‘personal message’ by the ICC despite the opening batter telling officials he did not wear it for political reasons, after wearing the words ‘Freedom is a human right’ and ‘All lives are equal’ at a training session.

‘I followed all the regulations, past precedents, guys have put stickers on their bats, names on their shoes,’ he said.

‘As I said to the ICC, it was for a personal bereavement. The armband was different to my shoes.

‘My shoes are very obvious. And I, at the end of the day, I didn’t wear the shoes, I changed my mind in respect for the rules and procedures and I left it at that.’

Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja made headlines during the Sydney Test match when he wore a black armband in memory of a personal tragedy that had deeply impacted him. The revelation behind the black armband has now been revealed, shedding light on the emotional journey that Khawaja has been on.

In a recent interview, Khawaja opened up about the heartbreaking loss of his older brother, Arsalan, who tragically passed away in 2014. Arsalan was just 29 years old when he died unexpectedly, leaving Khawaja and his family devastated.

Khawaja shared that his brother’s death had a profound impact on him and his family, and wearing the black armband was a way for him to honor his brother’s memory during the Sydney Test match. The gesture was a deeply personal one for Khawaja, who wanted to pay tribute to his beloved brother in a meaningful way.

The revelation behind the black armband adds a poignant layer to Khawaja’s on-field performance, showcasing the strength and resilience that he has shown in the face of adversity. It serves as a reminder of the human side of sports and the emotional journeys that athletes go through behind the scenes.

As fans and spectators, we now have a greater understanding of the personal tragedy that inspired Khawaja to wear the black armband, and it adds a deeper level of respect and admiration for the cricketer. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Usman Khawaja and his family as they continue to navigate the loss of their beloved brother.
