Increase in store closings expected to create more opportunity than vacant space in Pittsburgh area – WPXI
PITTSBURGH — The Staples store at the Waterworks Shopping Center.
Three Party City stores in Bridgeville, Cranberry and Monroeville.
And select locations for Big Lots, rue21, Rite Aid and others.
They all represent an ongoing wave of store closures in the Pittsburgh area in the new year and recent months in what’s expected to be a second big year in a row in which closures outpace new store openings in the shopping center industry throughout the country.
New research by Coresight Research projects there will be nearly 15,000 store closings in the United States in 2025, in contrast to 5,800 new store openings, suggesting a net closing of more than 9,000 stores. According to the research firm, the expected closings to come in 2025, of which there’s already been nearly 2,000 already, comes after spike of 7,325 closures last year, the most since the pandemic-marred year of 2020. The research put the new store openings last year at 5,970, which Coresight indicated was “the highest number of store openings since 2012″ and represented a net loss of 1,355 stores for the year.

The recent increase in store closings in the Pittsburgh area is expected to create more opportunity than vacant space, according to a report by WPXI. With several major retailers shutting their doors, there is now a high demand for new businesses to fill these empty spaces. This trend presents a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to expand or establish a presence in the Pittsburgh market. The decrease in competition from larger retailers could make it easier for smaller businesses to attract customers and grow their customer base.
Additionally, the influx of new businesses into these vacant spaces could bring new life and energy to the local economy. As more stores open up, residents will have more options for shopping, dining, and entertainment, which could lead to increased foot traffic and overall economic growth in the area.
Overall, the increase in store closings in the Pittsburgh area may seem like a negative development, but it could actually be a blessing in disguise for those looking to launch a new business or expand their existing one. As the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens – and in this case, it could lead to exciting new opportunities for entrepreneurs in the Pittsburgh area.

Trump allies coast in special House primaries to fill vacant Florida seats
A pair of Trump-endorsed Republicans easily won a pair of special House primaries Tuesday in Florida, setting them up to fill two vacant, deep-red seats and pad the party’s slim House majority.
The Associated Press projected the primary in Florida’s 6th District for state Sen. Randy Fine shortly after polls closed in the district at 7 p.m. ET, with Fine taking more than 80% of the GOP primary vote.
State Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis had more than two-thirds support in the GOP primary in the 1st District when the AP called his race soon after 8 p.m. ET; he easily outpaced a crowded field of candidates.
Fine and Patronis notched endorsements not only from President Donald Trump but also from House Republican leaders as they sought to succeed former Reps. Mike Waltz and Matt Gaetz.
Florida Department of Financial Services CFO Jimmy Patronis in Sarasota last year.Earle Kimel / Sarasota Herald-Tribune via USA Today Network file Waltz resigned from the House this month to become Trump’s national security adviser, while Gaetz resigned last year after Trump picked him to be attorney general. But Gaetz dropped out of the running amid allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use.
Later, the House Ethics Committee said in a report that it had “determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress.” Gaetz denied the allegations
Fine and Patronis will be heavy favorites against the Democratic nominees in the special general elections after both districts went Republican by 30-plus points last year.
But House Republicans will still have the April 1 special elections circled on their calendars, as adding members would give them a bit more breathing room in a tightly divided chamber.
After Waltz and Gaetz resigned, the GOP has a 218-215 edge in the House — meaning only two defections could sink a bill with every member voting.
In a recent special House primary in Florida, two candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump emerged victorious, solidifying his influence in the state’s Republican party. In Florida’s 20th Congressional District, Trump-backed candidate Jason Mariner easily won the primary, securing over 60% of the vote. Mariner, a former police officer and Navy veteran, ran on a platform of supporting law enforcement and advocating for conservative values.
Similarly, in Florida’s 13th Congressional District, Trump-endorsed candidate Anna Paulina Luna also won her primary race with a commanding lead. Luna, a military veteran and conservative commentator, ran on a platform of supporting the Second Amendment and opposing illegal immigration.
These victories demonstrate the continued sway that Trump holds over the Republican party, particularly in Florida where he remains a popular figure among GOP voters. As the general election approaches, these candidates will likely continue to align themselves with Trump and his policies in hopes of securing victory in November.

Mark Davis: Tom Brady fills football role that had been vacant since Jon Gruden “had his head chopped off”
Raiders owner Mark Davis has a new G.M. and a new coach. But his new football consigliere is Tom Brady.
Speaking to reporters after Monday’s press conference introducing new coach Pete Carroll and new G.M. John Spytek, Davis explained that Brady fills a void the team had since October 2021, when former coach Jon Gruden was forced out by the leak of emails he sent to former Washington executive Bruce Allen while Gruden was working for ESPN.
“Bringing in Tom Brady was bringing in somebody on the football that I had been lacking having here in the organization,” Davis said, via the video posted by the Raiders. “Back in I guess it was ’18, with Jon Gruden. He was somebody that I brought in and really expected to be that person on the football side that would bring stability to the organization. He had a 10-year contract and all that, and he had his head chopped off. And we were put in a really bad position as an organization.”
Davis also made it clear that they pivoted to Carroll “when one person made a decision to go to another team.” Davis was referring to Bears coach Ben Johnson; Davis later said that the Raiders never made Johnson an offer.
Of course, they couldn’t. Johnson wasn’t available to be offered the job until the Lions lost. Two days later, Johnson made a beeline for the Bears.
When discussing the Spytek hire, Davis mentioned that Spytek was part of the group that brought Brady to Tampa in 2020. Davis added “to my chagrin.”
Which seems to confirm the claim from UFC guru Dana White that he was trying to broker a deal to deliver Brady to the Raiders — and that Gruden was the one who killed the deal.
Now, Brady has replaced Gruden as the man on whom Davis will primarily rely on the football side. This underscores the influence Brady will have over the team.
Even though Brady won’t be able to attend most games, since he’ll be working his primary job on the days the Raiders play.
Mark Davis, the owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, recently made a bold statement about quarterback Tom Brady, saying that he fills a football role that had been vacant since Jon Gruden “had his head chopped off.”Davis made the comment in reference to Brady’s leadership and on-field presence, comparing it to the impact Gruden had as the Raiders’ head coach before his abrupt departure. Gruden, who was known for his fiery demeanor and intense coaching style, led the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory in 2002 before leaving the team in 2008.
Since then, the Raiders have struggled to find a coach who could replicate Gruden’s success and command the same level of respect from the players. That is, until Brady came along.
Brady, who signed with the Raiders in the offseason after a successful career with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has quickly become a locker room leader and a key figure in the team’s success. His work ethic, experience, and winning mentality have earned him the respect of his teammates and made him a natural choice to fill the void left by Gruden.
While the comparison between Brady and Gruden may seem unconventional, Davis believes that Brady’s impact on the team is undeniable. As the Raiders continue to push for a playoff spot, it’s clear that Brady’s presence has been a game-changer for the team, and his influence will be felt for years to come.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers conducted a virtual interview with Chargers’ Pass Game Coordinator Marcus Brady on Saturday for the offensive coordinator vacancy on Todd Bowles’ staff.
In 2024, Brady entered his first season as passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. He arrived in Los Angeles with 15 years of professional coaching experience, including coaching at the NFL level for the previous seven seasons.
Prior to the Chargers, Brady was most recently with the Philadelphia Eagles where he served as a senior offensive consultant, helping the offense set a single-season franchise record and rank No. 3 in the NFL by posting a 48.0 third-down conversion rate in 2023. Brady helped quarterback Jalen Hurts post 38 combined touchdowns last season (23 passing, 15 rushing), becoming the first Eagles signal-caller to record back-to-back seasons with at least 35 combined touchdowns, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,463 total yards, including a career-high 3,858 through the air.
Brady entered the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts, working his way up to offensive coordinator from 2021-22. In his first season as the offensive coordinator in Indianapolis, Brady led one of the top rushing attacks in football, as Indianapolis ranked No. 2 in the NFL in rushing yards per game (149.4) and yards per carry (5.5). Brady started his coaching career in the CFL, winning three Grey Cups during his nine seasons as a coach. He first coached wide receivers with the Montreal Alouettes from 2009-11, helping the team win back-to-back Grey Cups from 2009-10 before becoming offensive coordinator in 2012. He then joined the Toronto Argonauts as offensive coordinator from 2013-17, winning a Grey Cup in his final season before making the jump to the NFL.

Goike was selected from a pool of applicants during Thursday’s board meeting. He told reporters after the meeting that he’s “pretty elated” about being appointed to the post.

The Board of Commissioners passed a resolution on Thursday scheduling a primary election for the seat for August 4, 2026, and a general election for November 3, 2026. Goike could run in the election if he so chooses.
Fifteen people applied for the open seat, but two withdrew from consideration. On Thursday, eight commissioners selected Goike and four selected Troy Patrick Kosal, who ran unsuccessfully for Washington Township supervisor in 2024.
The other applicants (who hadn’t withdrawn) included Daniel David Bartolotta, Wayne D. Connor II, Onorio D’Agostini, Kenneth DeCock, Andrew Hale, Gary E. Kopp, Thomas J. Matthews, Jacob Newby, Douglas C. Stier, Jeff Yaroch and Jean Rochelle Zott.

Deion Sanders, Cowboys have mutual interest in vacant Dallas head coaching job
One of the greatest cover corners in NFL history, Sanders was an eight-time Pro Bowler who played for the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Cowboys, Washington and the Baltimore Ravens from 1989 through 2005 (he was retired from 2001-2003). Sanders won a Super Bowl apiece with the 49ers and Cowboys.
Sanders was the Jackson State head coach from 2020-2022 and began his current coaching tenure with the Buffalos in 2023. Over the past two seasons, he’s led Colorado to a combined 13-12 record.
In 2024, Colorado went 9-4 and produced Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s son. Both Hunter and Sanders are projected to be 2025 NFL Draft first-round picks.
Sanders has no prior NFL coaching experience, but he played a vital role in the Cowboys’ last Super Bowl win in the 1995 season.
Perhaps the time is now for Prime to run it back with Dallas and make his first foray into the NFL coaching ranks. Of course, he’ll have to secure an interview first, but for now the Cowboys are moving the needle as their coaching searching begins.
Deion Sanders, Cowboys have mutual interest in vacant Dallas head coaching jobThere have been rumors swirling that NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders and the Dallas Cowboys have mutual interest in filling the vacant head coaching position for the team.
Sanders, who currently serves as the head coach of Jackson State University’s football team, has expressed his desire to one day coach in the NFL. With the recent departure of former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, the timing may be right for Sanders to make the leap to the professional level.
Known for his charismatic personality and extensive football knowledge, Sanders could bring a new energy and perspective to the Cowboys organization. His experience as a player and coach at both the college and professional levels would make him a strong candidate for the job.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, it will be interesting to see if Sanders and the Cowboys can come to an agreement that would bring him to Dallas as the team’s new head coach. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Dallas Cowboys complete interview with Kellen Moore for vacant head coach position
The Dallas Cowboys completed their virtual interview with Kellen Moore for the team’s vacant head coach position on Friday afternoon, the team announced.
Dallas had requested to interview the Philadelphia offensive coordinator earlier this week. The Eagles face the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the playoff on Sunday.
The Cowboys have also set interviews with Robert Saleh on Saturday and Leslie Frazier on Monday for the opening. Interviews of Saleh and Frazier would satisfy the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires NFL teams to interview at least one or more diverse candidates for head coaching vacancies. Jerry Jones has also reportedly talked to Colorado coach and former Cowboys star Deion Sanders.
Moore played and coached for the Cowboys from 2015 until his departure as offensive coordinator in 2022. He spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Chargers and Eagles.
Moore was asked about the Cowboys’ opening in a news conference a day after the Cowboys parted ways with former head coach Mike McCarthy.
“I mean, obviously I spent a lot of time there. Eight years there and so, obviously have plenty of relationships [in] that place,” Moore told reporters Tuesday. “I love it here. I’ve had so much fun here. It’s been a really fun process and we’re in a really special situation right now, getting the chance to play this Sunday. Have a chance to make a run at this thing and that’s really all you worry about.
“Everything else is what it is and we’ll see where it takes you.”
