  • Courtney Vandersloot leaves Liberty for Chicago Sky return

Courtney Vandersloot is headed back to the only other WNBA home she’s ever known after two seasons in the Big Apple,

Vandersloot, who helped the Liberty win the franchise’s first-ever championship last season, is signing a deal to return to the Chicago Sky, her agent told The Athletic.

While the two sides have come to an agreement, the WNBA free agent signing period doesn’t begin until Saturday.

Before her agent had even confirmed the news, first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, Vandersloot had changed her Instagram bio to include a mention of the Sky in it.

Vandersloot, 35, had averaged 6.4 points and 4.8 assists per game last season, but saw her role reduced during the Liberty’s postseason run.

It seemed clear that Vandersloot wasn’t thrilled with how she was used in the postseason and had said earlier this month she would test the waters in free agency and “see the best situation for me and my family.”

When addressing what she wanted from the team she signed with, Vandersloot said she wanted to be “valued.”

“I want to be competitive, obviously. That’s why you come into this league — you want to be competing for championships. And a place that takes care of me, wants me to be there and … sees what I can bring to the team,” she said. “That’s most important. I want to have the ball in my hands and be able to create the way that I can. And just be in a place that is comfortable for me and my family.”

Chicago is quite familiar with what Vandersloot can bring to the floor.

She was drafted third overall by the organization in 2011, spent 12 years with the Sky and helped lead the team to a title in 2021.

Vandersloot departed the Windy City after the team failed to repeat as champions the following year, coming to New York amid much fanfare the same year as WNBA superstar Breanna Stewart signed with the Liberty.

Vandersloot is the Sky’s all-time assist leader and is second in league history in the category behind only Sue Bird.

After spending the last four seasons with the New York Liberty, Courtney Vandersloot has decided to return to the Chicago Sky. The star point guard began her WNBA career with the Sky in 2011 and played there for four seasons before being traded to the Liberty.

Vandersloot, who is considered one of the top point guards in the league, was a key player for the Liberty during her time there. However, she expressed a desire to return to Chicago and reunite with her former teammates and coaches.

The Sky are thrilled to have Vandersloot back in the fold and believe she will be a valuable asset to their team as they push for a championship. Vandersloot’s leadership, playmaking ability, and basketball IQ will be instrumental in helping the Sky compete at the highest level.

Fans are excited to see Vandersloot back in a Sky uniform and are eager to see what she can bring to the team this upcoming season. Welcome back, Courtney!

Free agent guard Courtney Vandersloot is expected to sign with the Chicago Sky on a one-year deal, a league source confirmed to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne on Wednesday.

The deal can’t be made official until Saturday, but Vandersloot already has updated her bio on Instagram to read “Chicago Sky.”

Vandersloot, a five-time All-Star and five-time All-WNBA pick, returns to a Sky franchise that drafted her in 2011. She spent the past two seasons with the New York Liberty, helped them win their first WNBA title in 2024.

The 5-foot-8 guard was drafted third overall in 2011 and spent 12 seasons in Chicago, guiding it to its first and only championship in 2021. The Sky experienced a mass exodus of standout players after that, but Vandersloot now returns to lead a young team starring second-year posts Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. The organization also hired Tyler Marsh to replace Teresa Weatherspoon as coach earlier this offseason.

She has led the league in assists seven times in her career, most recently in 2023 with New York (8.1 per game). She boasts career averages of 10.0 points and 6.6 assists per game.

  • Courtney Vandersloot is expected to sign with the Sky as an unrestricted free agent: sources

Courtney Vandersloot left the Sky in 2023 in pursuit of her second WNBA championship.

After accomplishing that goal with the Liberty last season, Vandersloot entered free agency with a new priority: compete for a franchise that values her. According to multiple sources out of Unrivaled, the Sky’s All-Time assist leader is expected to return to the franchise that drafted her with the third overall pick in the 2011 WNBA draft.

Vandersloot averaged 6.4 points and 4.8 assists, playing just 22.3 minutes per game last year for the Liberty. The five-time All-Star has been heavily pursued during free agency. Several franchises would expect her to come off the bench. She will have a starting role in Chicago and serve as the veteran presence they lacked last season.

Signing Vandersloot is another step in the Sky’s efforts to signal that they are a franchise worthy of the league’s top free agents.

    This is a developing story.

According to sources close to the situation, star point guard Courtney Vandersloot is expected to re-sign with the Chicago Sky as an unrestricted free agent. Vandersloot, who has been a vital part of the Sky’s success in recent years, is reportedly thrilled to continue her career with the team that she has helped lead to multiple playoff appearances.

Vandersloot, known for her exceptional court vision and playmaking abilities, has been a fan favorite in Chicago and her return is sure to excite Sky fans. The team’s front office has been working diligently to secure Vandersloot’s services and it appears that their efforts have paid off.

With Vandersloot back in the fold, the Sky will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the WNBA. Stay tuned for official confirmation of Vandersloot’s signing and get ready to see her continue to dazzle on the court in a Sky uniform. #SkyHigh #CourtneyVandersloot #WNBAFreeAgency
