Real Madrid found themselves down 1-0 at the break during their trip to Valencia on Friday and VAR may have missed two calls for a potential equaliser.
First, Kylian Mbappé was taken down in the box and Los Blancos had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot.
Jude Bellingham stepped up, and his hop-and-skip style spot kick hit off the right post before being cleared away.
However, replays showed multiple players entered the box before the Englishman struck his penalty, and goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski was off his line. No retake was awarded.
Then, minutes later, Madrid thought they had turned things 1-1, only to be denied again.
A lightning quick Mbappé rounded the goalkeeper and tapped home from point-blank range, but VAR ruled the goal offside thanks to the Frenchman’s knee.
Was either of these decisions the right call?

Have you ever watched a football match and questioned the decisions made by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR)? Well, in Real Madrid’s recent match against Valencia, many fans and pundits are debating whether VAR missed two crucial calls in favor of the Madrid side.
The first incident occurred in the first half when Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema appeared to be fouled inside the penalty area by Valencia’s goalkeeper. Despite protests from the Real Madrid players, the referee and VAR decided not to award a penalty kick to the Madrid side.
The second controversial moment came in the second half when Valencia’s defender seemed to handle the ball inside the box, but once again, VAR did not intervene to award Real Madrid a penalty.
These decisions have sparked debate among fans and experts, with many questioning the reliability and consistency of VAR in crucial moments of the game. Did VAR miss two huge calls for Real Madrid against Valencia? What are your thoughts on the matter? Let us know in the comments below! #VAR #RealMadrid #Valencia #LaLiga

A new use of VAR will be trialled in a Liverpool game next month, while there has been plenty of reaction to the Reds’ 5-0 win away to West Ham.
Today’s Main LFC Headline
Arne Slot‘s side visit Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday, January 8 and they will be a part of history.
It has been confirmed that the referee will make in-stadium announcements on the outcome of VAR reviews in the clash in north London, in a much-needed leap forward with the technology.
It will also be used in Arsenal‘s two-legged semi-final meeting with Newcastle, and for the remainder of this season in the Carabao Cup.
The jury is still out on whether football was better before VAR or not, but this is at least progress of note!
Joanna Durkan and Adam Beattie have dissected Liverpool’s thrashing of the Hammers, including Trent’s celebration:
“I think we’re sometimes guilty of assuming footballers live in a bubble away from all the noise when, in reality, they’re probably just as conscious of it as we are.
“My instinct is that he is aware of the stick that has come his way recently and that he wanted to make that known in his celebration.
“A few have gone a little bit early with the criticism in my opinion. We can all agree it would be a hugely bitter pill to swallow if he does go for nothing but it makes little sense to hurl any abuse until we hear something concrete.”

While the Brazilian’s exit to Barcelona felt like a blow at the time, it ended up being a sliding doors moment.
Liverpool used the £142 million for Coutinho to sign Virgil van Dijk and Alisson in 2018 and the rest is history.
While the Reds have enjoyed a golden period in the seven years since, Coutinho’s career has petered out, and he is now on loan at Vasco da Gama in his homeland.
He must wonder if he made the right decision, in hindsight, considering he is the same age as Salah!
Liverpool FC fans have been eagerly awaiting the introduction of VAR in the Premier League, and it seems they may get their wish soon. The Reds are set to take part in a trial of the technology during their upcoming matches, with the hope that it will help improve decision-making on the field.
In other news, club legend Ian Rush has spoken out about the importance of keeping star player Mohamed Salah at Anfield. Rush has urged Liverpool to do everything in their power to ensure that Salah stays with the club for the long term, as he believes the Egyptian forward is crucial to the team’s success.
It remains to be seen how the VAR trial will impact Liverpool’s matches, but one thing is for certain – fans will be eagerly watching to see how it all plays out. And as for Salah’s future, it seems the club is determined to hold on to their prized asset for as long as possible. Stay tuned for more updates on all things Liverpool FC. #YNWA
