  • SLU turns tables on VCU in 78-69 victory

St. Louis University turned it around against Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday night, going from a 16-point loss to a nine-point win in the span of two weeks as it recorded its biggest win of the season so far, a 78-69 win over league-leading VCU at Chaifetz Arena.

The game was hardly artistic, but the result was a thing of beauty for the Billikens (13-8, 6-2), who came into the game 0-5 against Quad 1 or Quad 2 opponents and are now a half-game behind A-10 leading George Mason. VCU is 16-5, 6-2.

Gibson Jimerson scored 26 points and Kobe Johnson matched his career-high with 19 points, including five free throws in the final 2:30. After a slow start, Robbie Avila finished with 14 points, most of them at the free throw line where he made eight of eight.

SLU’s tough week continues on Friday when Dayton comes to Chaifetz Arena.

SLU was able to tighten up on some of things that did them in the first meeting. VCU had 27 points off turnovers in the first meeting and had just 14 this time, and after having 19 second-chance points in Richmond had 15 in St. Louis. VCU had its worst shooting night of the season at 32.8 percent, while SLU shot 48.8 percent from the field.

The second half swung back and forth, with VCU going up five, then SLU going up five, then VCU going up two. Jimerson drove to the basket, scored, was fouled and made the free throw to put SLU back in the lead with 8:49 to go at 52-51. After a badly missed 3 by VCU, Amari McCottry drove to the basket, looking like he was going to try for a spectacular dunk but he was too well defended and passed to Isaiah Swope in the corner for a 3-pointer that put SLU up four.

VCU got within two points before a layin by Kalu Anya and then a 3-pointer by Jimerson put SLU up 60-53 with 4:49 to play. VCU finally cut the lead to six on a 3-pointer with 1:10 left. After a delay when a fight broke out in the stands behind the VCU bench, Johnson made two free throws to push the lead back to eight, and VCU countered with two free throws of its own to take it back to six with 49.9 seconds left.

Jimerson made two free throws to extend the lead and after a missed 3 for VCU, Swope clinched the win with two free throws with 28.7 seconds to play.

SLU trailed 31-28 at the half, and once again, it shot much better than VCU did (47.8 percent to 36.1 percent), but VCU took 13 more field goal attempts. VCU had 10 points off offensive rebounds, and while the percentage wasn’t as bad in the first half as it was when the teams met in Richmond, it still leaned substantially in VCU’s favor and made a difference in who was ahead.

SLU’s offense was on and off, and while Jimerson made his first 3-point try of the night, he missed his next three and made just one of four free throws in the half. Still, he led the team in scoring in the first half with 10, most of them on drives to the basket. Avila didn’t score until there was 4:49 to go in the half, on just his second shot of the game. Johnson had nine points in the first half, just off his season high of 12.

In a thrilling comeback, Saint Louis University (SLU) turned the tables on Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in a 78-69 victory. The Billikens fought hard and never gave up, rallying from a double-digit deficit to secure the win.

SLU’s defense was relentless, forcing turnovers and converting them into points on the offensive end. The team’s star players stepped up when it mattered most, with clutch shots and key defensive stops down the stretch.

Fans erupted in cheers as SLU took control of the game in the second half, dominating both offensively and defensively. The victory was a testament to the team’s resilience and determination to come out on top against a tough opponent like VCU.

With this win, SLU proves once again that they are a force to be reckoned with in the conference and a team to watch out for in the upcoming postseason. Congratulations to the Billikens on a well-deserved victory! #SLU #VCU #CollegeBasketball #Victory #ComebackWin

  • VCU vs Saint Louis: Large brawl erupts between fans, delaying college basketball game

    CNN
     —

A large brawl which appeared to involve at least a dozen fans broke out at a men’s college basketball game between Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Saint Louis on Tuesday, causing the game to be halted for a number of minutes.

With Saint Louis leading 69-63 and 1:10 remaining, a fight at Chaifetz Arena in Missouri spilled out over rows of seats and down onto the floor near the VCU bench. It is not clear what caused the fight to break out.

Security and police quickly rushed in to try and break it up, while players on the court remained in their huddles. CBS Sports coverage also picked up other fans apparently booing those involved in the fight.

CNN has reached out to Saint Louis University and VCU for comment.

Footage captured by CNN affiliate KSDK News appeared to show an older man emerging from the melee with blood on his face and neck.

The game eventually resumed after a delay of about seven minutes, according to The Associated Press, and the Billikens completed their 78-69 win over the Rams.

Saint Louis’ Gibson Jimerson racked up a game-high 26 points, complemented by Kobe Johnson scoring 19 with six rebounds, and Robbie Avila adding 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Phillip Russell and Zeb Jackson each scored 15 for VCU.

It is unclear what led to the fight breaking out at Chaifetz Arena.

In his post-match press conference, Billikens head coach Josh Schertz chose to focus on the positive energy brought by fans.

“Our guys were feeding off the energy of the home crowd. They were into it. They lifted us at times, when we were tired. Students were awesome,” he said. “We don’t get through this game without them.”

The win – Saint Louis’ fifth in a row at home – halts VCU’s six-game winning streak and draws the Billikens level with the Rams in second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10), behind George Mason.

Having already played each other once this season before Tuesday – a 78-62 win for VCU on January 14 – the teams can only meet again this season if they do so in the A-10 conference tournament in March.

In a shocking turn of events, a large brawl erupted between fans during the VCU vs Saint Louis college basketball game, causing a significant delay in the game.

The altercation started in the stands and quickly escalated, with punches being thrown and chaos ensuing. Security and officials were forced to intervene to break up the fight and restore order.

The incident left many fans shaken and bewildered, as college basketball games are typically known for their spirited but friendly atmosphere. It is unclear what sparked the brawl or if any arrests were made.

As a result of the altercation, the game was delayed for several minutes as the situation was brought under control. Both teams were eventually able to resume play, but the incident left a dark cloud over what was supposed to be a competitive and exciting matchup.

This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and respect among fans, as incidents like these have no place in the world of college athletics. Let’s hope that steps are taken to prevent such behavior in the future and that fans can enjoy the game in a safe and respectful manner.

  • Fight between fans delays Saint Louis’ victory over VCU

A fight between fans in the stands near the VCU bench caused a Rams’ Atlantic 10 Conference game with Saint Louis to be delayed about seven minutes with 1:10 remaining in regulation.

The Billikens led 69-63 when fans wrestling with each other stumbled across rows of seats and onto the floor.

“You don’t often see this in college basketball, but there is a heck of a brawl going on in the stands,” play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy said on the CBS Sports Network as the melee ensued. “The police officers and the security have come over and tried to help out almost immediately to slow it all down.”

Both teams huddled around their coaching staffs on the court as the brawl broke up, and the participants were led up the stairs from the section.

When the contest resumed, the Billikens were able to close it out. Gibson Jimerson scored 26 points as Saint Louis outlasted VCU 78-69.

Jimerson had five rebounds for the Billikens (13-8, 6-2). Kobe Johnson scored 19 points while going 6-of-10 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line and added six rebounds. Robbie Avila shot 3-of-5 from the field and 8-for-8 from the foul line to finish with 14 points.

Zeb Jackson led the Rams (16-5, 6-2) in scoring, finishing with 15 points and two steals. Phillip Russell added 15 points for VCU. Max Shulga also had 14 points. The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Rams.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In a shocking turn of events, a fight between fans delayed Saint Louis’ victory over VCU. The intense rivalry between the two teams boiled over into chaos as fans from both sides clashed in the stands, causing a delay in the game.

The fight broke out in the second half of the game, with tensions running high as both teams fought for the lead. Security quickly intervened to break up the altercation, but not before the game was temporarily halted.

Despite the disruption, Saint Louis managed to maintain their focus and secure a hard-fought victory over VCU. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the passion and intensity that can sometimes escalate to dangerous levels in sports rivalries.

Both teams and their respective fan bases will need to reflect on this incident and work towards ensuring that such behavior does not happen again in the future. Sports should be a source of enjoyment and camaraderie, not violence and conflict. Let’s hope that this serves as a wake-up call for all involved to behave in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner in the future.

SLU up six with just over a minute to play

1:10, second half: A scuffle in the VCU section has delayed things as the security guards deal with that. A lot of shoving that appears to now be under control. SLU leads 69-63.

SLU inches closer to a huge win

3:58, second half: SLU is on the verge of its biggest win in two years after a foul called on VCU’s Max Shulga entering that TV timeout. The Billikens are still up 60-53.

VCU has missed eight straight shots and hasn’t scored in nearly four minutes.

Gibson Jimerson has 11 points in the second half and 21 for the game.

7:59, second half: After VCU’s Zeb Jackson scored five straight points to give the Rams the lead, Gibson Jimerson drew Jackson’s fourth foul and scored on the play to regain SLU’s edge.

Robbie Avila is driving the ball far more aggressively this half. He has seven points in the half and 12 for the game.

This is easily the best game at Chaifetz Arena this season.

Dylan Warlick, SLU battling, up 45-42

11:39, second half: Dylan Warlick is playing some good minutes in relief of Kalu Anya, who has three fouls. Warlick also has three.

Warlick just grabbed an offensive board and drew a foul. SLU is up 45-42.

Warlick’s scrappy play is also igniting the crowd. He was pressed into service partway into the season due to injuries.

SLU hanging around in a physical game

15:36, second half: Gibson Jimerson’s jumper cut the deficit to three just after Phillip Russell hit a 3-pointer to give the Rams their biggest lead of the game.

Three SLU starters, Swope, Avila and Anya, have two fouls.

VCU up 31-28 at halftime after strong finish

Halftime: Kobe Johnson missed an open 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, and SLU trails going into the locker room.

SLU has missed five of its last six shots.

Gibson Jimerson leads SLU with 10 followed by Johnson with nine. Isaiah Swope (two points) and Robbie Avila (five points) have been relatively quiet.

Zeb Jackson and Phillip Russell each have eight to lead VCU.

VCU has nine offensive rebounds to SLU’s zero and a 10-0 edge in second-chance points.

VCU heats up, takes 27-23 lead

2:39, first half: VCU hit its second 3-pointer of the game, by Zeb Jackson, and the Rams lead this physical game. The Rams are 2-of-14 from 3-point range.

SLU’s Robbie Avila picked up his first three points, a basket and foul off a nice under-the-basket assist from Kalu Anya.

Isaiah Swope picked up his second foul, joining teammate Dylan Warlick and VCU’s Zeb Jackson with two.

SLU maintains one-point edge in a sloppy stretch

7:42, first half: SLU’s offense has started to sputter a bit, but VCU hasn’t been able to capitalize and the Billikens lead 18-17. At one point in that stretch, VCU missed five straight shots. SLU is up to four turnovers on the game.

SLU coach Josh Schertz is going to his bench a bit more than usual, with Warlick, Pikaar and McCottry all seeing several minutes.

SLU up 16-13 as Gibson Jimerson, Kobe Johnson lead the way

11:45, first half: Gibson Jimerson just finished off a driving layup and drew the foul to give SLU a three-point lead. He’ll have a free throw after the TV timeout.

Jimerson has five and Kobe Johnson seven. Johnson is driving with confidence.

VCU has two offensive rebounds and SLU has one turnover, two areas of concern entering the game.

SLU leads 8-6 early on the strength of 3-point shooting

15:56, first half: SLU has hit its first two 3-point tries, a good sign for a team that’s been slumping from 3. Gibson Jimerson and Kobe Johnson hit the two treys.

Before the game, St. Louis native and VCU guard Phillip Russell came out pointing at the student section with a big smile on his face as he was announced. He relishes playing the villain on the road. He later motioned at SLU students to get louder. Things may get interesting later between he and the crowd.

Previewing Tuesday’s SLU vs. VCU game

6:50 p.m.: Two weeks after the first meeting, St. Louis University hopes for a better outcome as it hosts Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Chaifetz Arena.

VCU pummeled SLU 78-62 in Richmond in that first meeting. The Rams killed SLU with offensive rebounds, and SLU shot itself in the foot with its season-worst 29.8% turnover rate.

Ken Pomeroy gives SLU a 31% chance to win and has VCU, thge 35th-best teim in the country, prevailing 72-66.

SLU has been in a 3-point shooting slump, shooting about 20% from 3-point range in each of its last three games. The Billikens may need to break out of that funk to have a chance.

  • Bonnies Travel To VCU For Friday Night Showcase

    ST. BONAVENTURE (15-5, 3-4 A-10) at VCU (15-4, 5-1 A-10)
    Friday, Jan. 24 – 9:00 p.m.
    Richmond, Va.
    TV: ESPNU
Radio: Bonnies Online Network / 100.1 FM The Hero

    OPENING TIP

St. Bonaventure is looking to sweep the season series vs. VCU for the second consecutive season after winning the Atlantic 10 opener on Dec. 31, 77-75, at the Reilly Center. Bona took last year’s meeting at VCU with a convincing 89-78 victory on Jan. 3, 2024 for Bona’s third win all-time at the Siegel Center.

The Bonnies have won six of the past seven games vs. VCU dating back to the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship victory over the Rams and seven of the last nine overall.

St. Bonaventure has been playing short-handed: starting point guard Dasonte Bowen has missed the last month due to a foot injury. Chance Moore, who entered last week leading the Bonnies in both scoring and rebounding, missed Tuesday’s game vs. George Mason with a foot injury of his own.

    STARTING LINEUP

    • Redshirt freshman Duane Thompson has turned in his two best career performances in back-to-back games. After scoring seven points with four rebounds at Duquesne last Saturday, he turned in a career-best 16 points and seven boards vs. George Mason on Tuesday in 20 minutes off the bench, another career-high.
    • Bona entered Tuesday’s game averaging under six bench points per game in Atlantic 10 play but had doubled that before halftime.
    • The Bonnies continue to rank top-20 nationally in scoring defense. By allowing 63.6 ppg for the season, St. Bonaventure stands 17th in Division I. The Atlantic 10 continues to be a defensive league – while the Bonnies stand 17th nationally, they are third in the A-10 behind George Mason and VCU.
    • St. Bonaventure continues to rank in the nation’s top-100 squads in NET (88) and KenPom (92).
    • Bona is shooting 73.2 percent at the foul line this season, third-best among A-10 squads behind only Richmond (78.3%) and Saint Joseph’s (73.4%).
    • Miles Rose played a career-high 19 minutes off the bench in Saturday’s game while Thompson logged a then career-high 17. Rose and Thompson each were members of Bona’s squad last year as two of three scholarship players who returned for this year along with Noel Brown.
    • Melvin Council Jr. is eighth among all Atlantic 10 players during conference play in scoring, averaging 17.0 ppg in A-10 games thus far.
    • Noah Bolanga earned his first career start Tuesday vs. George Mason, posting a new career-high in points with eight after making a pair of 3-pointers for his first game of multiple field goals from beyond the arc this season.
    • Noel Brown scored his first career double-double in his 119th career Division I game (19 points, 10 rebounds) at Duquesne last weekend. The 10 boards were a new career-high.
    • Chance Moore was held scoreless first time this season after being limited to just 12 minutes vs. Duquesne due to injury. Moore then missed the George Mason game, the first game he has missed this year.

    TRENDING NUMBERS

    3 –
Melvin Council Jr. hit the game-winning layup with just over three seconds to play in the Dec. 31 win over VCU. He finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists in that game.
1:13 – Melvin Council Jr. has played all but 1:13 in Bona’s last seven games.
16 – Duane Thompson posted his first career double-figure scoring effort vs. George Mason with 16 points off the bench. That is more than the Bonnies have scored as a team off the bench in all but three games this year.
26 – In the first meeting of the season, the Bonnies and VCU shared a combined 26 ties and lead changes.
45% – Lajae Jones is shooting over 45 percent from beyond the arc this season, a total that ranks third in the Atlantic 10.

    SERIES HISTORY

This will be the 20th meeting all-time between St. Bonaventure and VCU. The Bonnies have won seven of the last nine contests between the two programs.

Last year, the Bonnies led wire-to-wire in a convincing win in Richmond over the Rams, 89-78. The 89 points posted by Bona’s in that game represents the program’s all-time high vs. VCU and gave the program back-to-back wins at VCU’s Siegel Center for the first time.  Later in the season, the Bonnies capped their first-ever season sweep of VCU with a 67-62 win at the Reilly Center.

The rivalry has been an entertaining one in recent years. In 2022-23, the Bonnies scored a dramatic 61-58 win at VCU. The 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship Game came as the rubber match between the Bonnies and Rams after splitting two regular season meetings that year. St. Bonaventure captured its second Atlantic 10 title in program history, 74-65, over VCU in Dayton that season.

Prior to their first matchup as A-10 foes in 2013, the Bonnies defeated VCU in back-to-back years during the late 70s – a 63-61 victory in the 1978 ECAC Championship Game to reach the NCAA Tournament as well as a victory in the following season on home court. In the 1978 ECAC Championship, Tim Waterman’s buzzer-beater sent the Bonnies to victory – and a spot in the NCAA Tournament – in Rochester’s War Memorial Stadium with one of the most memorable shots in program history.

    ABOUT VCU

     • The Rams were picked as the A-10 preseason favorite after returning a conference-high 65 percent of its scoring from last year’s team that finished 24-14 overall. Preseason First Team selection Max Shulga and Second Team honorees Zeb Jackson and Joe Bamisile lead the way. Bamisile posts 17.0 ppg and 5.4 rpg while Shulga (16.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and Jackson (11.3, 3.1 rpg) are scoring threats in any contest. Jackson was also selected to the league’s preseason All-Defensive Team.

    • VCU has won five straight games since losing at Bonaventure to begin Atlantic 10 play on Dec. 31. VCU has since scored road wins at Loyola Chicago (84-65), Saint Joseph’s (78-69) and Rhode Island (81-57) and at home vs. Saint Louis (78-62) and Fordham (73-61).

    • VCU ranks 12th nationally in defense, holding opponents to just 62.5 points per game as well stand 35th in the country in turnover margin (+3.3).

  • URI Looks to Continue Clutch Play Against VCU

    THE BASICS
    Rhode Island (14-4, 3-3 A-10) vs. VCU (14-4, 4-1 A-10)
    Tip-Off: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 7:05 p.m. EST
Coverage: Watch: CBSSN | Listen: Varsity Network | Live Stats | Game Notes

RHODE ISLAND VS. VCU – SERIES NOTES

Rhode Island and VCU are meeting for the 23rd time, with each side winning 11 games thus far.
VCU has won four straight in the series, including an 88-67 victory last season.
URI is 5-3 when hosting VCU.
VCU enters the game in a three-way tie for second place in the Atlantic 10 at 4-1, while Rhode Island is one of three teams tied for fifth place at 3-3.
Rhode Island is looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since the start of conference play. VCU has won its last four games after losing its A-10 opener.
VCU is one of the top defensive teams in the country. It ranks second in the Atlantic 10 and 14th in the nation, allowing just 62.8 points per game.
VCU blocks an average of 5.6 shots per game, which ranks ninth in the country and third in the conference.
Opponents shoot just .391 against VCU, the second-lowest percentage in the A-10.
    CBSSN TO CARRY THE GAME

Tuesday’s game is Rhode Island’s third in seven days.
CBS Sports Network will have the national broadcast, with Tom McCarthy on play-by-play and Isis “Ice” Young as the analyst.
Steve McDonald and Chris DiSano will have the audio call on the Varsity Network.
Tip time is set for 7:05 p.m.
LEGEND OF THOMAS CONTINUES TO GROW

Senior point guard Sebastian Thomas hit the game-winning shot in URI’s 92-90 win over Davidson Saturday, the fifth time this season he has provided the winning points with less than 30 seconds to go.
Against the Wildcats, Thomas banked home a running 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1.3 seconds on the clock just moments after Davidson had taken the lead.
Against George Mason on Jan. 4, Thomas hit a jump shot and was fouled with 0.9 seconds to go to lift the Rams to a 62-59 win. He made the free throw for a three-point play.
Against Temple on Dec. 21, Thomas hit a 3-pointer and was fouled for a four-point play with 21 seconds to go in a tie game. He then got a steal and made two more free throws to seal the 85-79 win.
On Dec. 2 in a 79-75 win over Yale, he was 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 27 seconds.
Five days later, with URI up 64-61 against Providence, Thomas had a steal with 53 seconds to go, then hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds to go to ice the win.
Thomas is at his best when the game is on the line. In the final minute of regulation and overtime, he is 9-for-14 (.643) from the field, 5-for-8 (.625) from 3-point range and 25-for-30 (.833) at the free throw line.
He has scored 48 points just in the final minute and overtime through 16 games.
His play down the stretch of close games is a major reason Rhode Island is 3-0 in one-possession games and 4-2 in games decided by five points or less.
Three of URI’s six conference games so far have been decided by one possession.

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team is looking to continue their clutch play as they face off against Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in their upcoming game. URI has been on a hot streak recently, pulling off several close wins and showing their ability to come through in crunch time.

    What to Know

Rhode Island will be in front of their home fans on Tuesday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-court advantage. They and the VCU Rams will face off in an Atlantic 10 battle at 7:00 p.m. ET at Thomas M. Ryan Center. Rhode Island is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 80.4 points per game this season.

Rhode Island’s offense and defense might be a bit winded after their high-scoring matchup with Davidson on Saturday. Rhode Island skirted by Davidson 92-90 thanks to a clutch shot from Sebastian Thomas with but a second left in the second quarter. Kudos to the oddsmakers for accurately forecasting both the winner and the close margin.

Rhode Island can attribute much of their success to Thomas, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten assists. The contest was Thomas’ eighth in a row with at least 22.4 points. Another player making a difference was Jaden House, who went 8 for 11 en route to 19 points.

Rhode Island was working as a unit and finished the game with 21 assists. That’s the most assists they’ve posted since back in November of 2023.

Meanwhile, VCU waltzed into their matchup on Friday with three straight wins… but they left with four. They came out on top against the Hawks by a score of 78-69. 78 seems to be a good number for the Rams as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead VCU to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jack Clark, who went 5 for 8 en route to 18 points plus seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Zeb Jackson, who scored 14 points in addition to seven rebounds and two steals.

Rhode Island’s victory bumped their record up to 14-4. As for VCU, they have been performing well recently as they’ve won ten of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Rhode Island has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 39.7 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like VCU struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 38.6. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.

Rhode Island suffered a grim 88-67 defeat to VCU in their previous meeting back in February of 2024. That game was pretty much over by halftime, at which point Rhode Island was down 42-21.

    Odds

VCU is a big 7.5-point favorite against Rhode Island, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Rams as a 6.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 147.5 points.

VCU vs Rhode Island College Basketball Betting Preview

The Rams are enjoying their best start since 2018, Dan Hurley’s final season in Kingston.

Sebastian Thomas is averaging 19 points and six assists per game at the point, which puts him in an exclusive club this season. Only National Player of the Year candidate Kam Jones (Marquette) has hit those scoring and assist thresholds.

This play will sink or swim with Thomas because of VCU’s famed on-ball pressure. Despite his usage, the Rams’ point guard has four games with zero turnovers this season. Avoiding turnovers is paramount because Rhody’s four losses this season can all be traced back to points off of turnovers (14 PPG).

When it’s a half-court affair, Archie Miller’s team is far more buttoned up, particularly when it comes to closing out on shooters (27% 3P, 3rd).

I also like the situational angle of VCU’s fourth road game in three weeks finally catching up with it.

VCU has shot an unsustainable 39% from deep in those road games, far better than its season average.

If the triples aren’t falling at that rate, I’d like to be on the home ‘dog on Tuesday.

    I’m passing on the moneyline.

My Pick: Under 141 or Better

VCU vs Saint Joe’s College Basketball Betting Preview

We have a wild schematic matchup between two elite A-10 squads on Friday.

Saint Joe’s runs a very entertaining dribble-handoff-based secondary-motion five-out offense that’s elite in spacing behind stretch-five Rasheer Fleming and the Erik Reynolds II-Xzayvier Brown backcourt duo.

The Hawks will always be erratic and subject to variance with their high 3-point rate, but they’re an analytically friendly, ultimately effective offense.

I’d like to think that VCU’s aggressive, press-happy defense would be vulnerable against teams with elite spacing and shooting, but that’s not quite the case. The Rams have been borderline elite in catch-and-shoot denial while also being elite in ball-screen coverage, a feat only the great Ryan Odom could pull off.

Then again, if any team can beat a press-happy defense, it’s the Hawks. Saint Joe’s ranks seventh nationally in PPP against press coverage (1.21), as these guards can slice over-aggressive defenses apart.

The Rams have an up-tempo, attack-and-kick unit with excellent spacing, which is the offense Odom has always run. VCU has its own elite backcourt, led by Max Shulga and Joe Bamisile, which should make this one a wildly entertaining guard-friendly battle.

But Saint Joe’s is also a fantastic catch-and-shoot denial defense. Fleming is an uber-versatile defender who can chase anyone around the court, and his rotations could play a significant role in closing out on the Rams’ jumpers.

Typically, I immediately look toward the under when two catch-and-shoot-reliant offenses face off against two catch-and-shoot-reliant defenses. It’s challenging for secondary-based offenses to seamlessly switch to on-ball creation, even when defenses are handing them the middle of the floor.

I’m a little scared of these two up-tempo, often-transition-reliant offenses. Still, projections also think this number is a tad high, with EvanMiya, KenPom and Bart Torvik projecting the total between 138 and 140, while Haslametrics projects it closer to 135.
