Pete Carroll hired: What he brings to Las Vegas Raiders
It’s a new era for the Las Vegas Raiders as hey are beginning the Pete Carroll Era.
There is a lot to unpack, but there are some aspects of the hire that stand out above other.
To break it down, let’s look the biggest reason to be optimistic about Carroll’s tenure and the biggest worry spot.
He can be a stabilizing factor:
Carroll is a true NFL head coach. He belongs in the role. He has 18 years of NFL head-coaching experience and he has a pristine reputation for being a quality football man. The job will not be too big for him and he will also respect the job and represent the Raiders well. He is a master culture builder and his influence on this roster and franchise will be felt immediately. The players will quickly know they are in good hands and their leader knows what he’s doing. That wasn’t always the case the past few years. This is a true leader who is in control.
The quarterback situation:
This is not Carroll’s fault, but it’s now his burden. While Carroll will bring stability, leadership, vision and a clear path toward building a great program, the Raiders won’t be able to breakthrough until they find their next quarterback. Carroll and a band-aid quarterback will only have a ceiling of mediocrity. That won’t work in the AFC West. So, unless and until the Raiders figure out the most important position on the field, the Raiders will be an incomplete work in progress.
Conclusion:
The Raiders are halfway there. They found a competent coach. Not they have to work on the roster.
After much speculation and anticipation, the Las Vegas Raiders have officially hired Pete Carroll as their new head coach. Carroll, who previously coached the Seattle Seahawks for over a decade, brings a wealth of experience and success to the Raiders. One of Carroll’s biggest strengths is his ability to connect with his players and create a positive team culture. Known for his enthusiasm and energy, Carroll is sure to bring a renewed sense of excitement to the Raiders organization. His focus on building strong relationships with his players and fostering a sense of camaraderie on the team could be exactly what the Raiders need to take their performance to the next level.
Carroll is also known for his innovative coaching style and willingness to take risks. His aggressive play-calling and willingness to think outside the box have led to numerous successes throughout his coaching career. With the Raiders looking to make a splash in the AFC West, Carroll’s bold and creative approach could be just what they need to shake things up and make a statement in the league.
Overall, Pete Carroll’s hiring brings a sense of optimism and anticipation to the Las Vegas Raiders. With his proven track record of success, ability to connect with players, and innovative coaching style, the Raiders are in good hands with Carroll at the helm. Fans can look forward to an exciting new era under his leadership.

The Ring has learned that an agreement is in place for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to defend his super middleweight titles against Terence Crawford in an intriguing battle between generational greats.
Alvarez, 34, and Crawford, 37, are expected to meet in the main event of a Riyadh Season show – on a September date to be determined, and a venue to be chosen in Las Vegas.
The Alvarez-Crawford megafight will pit the No. 3 fighter on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, Crawford, against the seventh-rated Alvarez, boxing’s most marketable star in the United States.
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), of Omaha, Nebraska, and Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs), of Guadalajara, Mexico, are four-division champions and elite-level talents, but Crawford will move up two weight classes – from the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds to the super middleweight maximum of 168 – for what figures to be the most difficult fight of his 17-year professional career.
Alvarez and Crawford both stand at approximately 5-foot-8, but Alvarez figures to open as a decided betting favorite because he is the more powerful fighter and has competed as high as the light heavyweight limit of 175 pounds.
Crawford made his junior middleweight debut August 3, when career-long 154-pound contender Israil Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs) gave Crawford some trouble in a 12-round bout the former undisputed welterweight champ won by unanimous decision at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
The business savvy Alvarez initially ignored Crawford’s overtures. As momentum developed for their fight among hardcore and casual boxing fans, Alvarez eventually came around.
The Mexican superstar and Turki Alalshikh – owner of The Ring and head of Riyadh Season – met in London last month to discuss the Crawford bout because Alvarez attended the inaugural Ring awards gala at Old Royal Naval College.
Crawford has long been committed to moving up two weight classes to square off against Alvarez in what has all the makings of a very successful pay-per-view event.
Alvarez – who holds the Ring, IBO, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles – is first expected to fight May 3 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. His opponent for what will amount to a stay-busy fight prior to facing Crawford has not been determined.
IBF super middleweight champ William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) has long been considered as a possible option for Canelo’s return in May.
Scull won the IBF belt stripped from Alvarez last July on October 19. The Cuban-born, Germany-based Scull defeated Russia’s Vladimir Shishkin (16-1, 10 KOs) by unanimous decision that night at Stadthalle in Falkensee, a suburb of Berlin.
It isn’t clear if Crawford will box before a fight with Alvarez in September. If Crawford waits, he won’t have fought for 13 months by the time he steps into the ring to box Alvarez.
Crawford has history on his side, because unlike most championship-caliber boxers, he has performed at an elite level even when ending long periods of inactivity.

After months of negotiations and speculation, boxing fans can finally rejoice as an agreement has been reached for a megafight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford. The highly anticipated bout is set to take place in Las Vegas in September, with both fighters eager to prove their dominance in the ring.Canelo Alvarez, the reigning WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion, is coming off a dominant victory over Billy Joe Saunders in May. Widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Alvarez will be looking to add another impressive win to his already stellar resume.
On the other hand, Terence Crawford, the undefeated WBO welterweight champion, is considered one of the most skilled and versatile fighters in the sport. With an impressive record of 37 wins and 0 losses, Crawford will be looking to make a statement against Alvarez and solidify his status as one of the top fighters in the world.
The matchup between Alvarez and Crawford promises to be an electrifying clash of styles, with both fighters known for their speed, power, and technical prowess. Fans can expect a thrilling back-and-forth battle that could go down as one of the greatest fights in recent memory.
Stay tuned for more details on this highly anticipated showdown between two of boxing’s biggest stars. Get ready for an unforgettable night of action in Las Vegas as Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford square off in what promises to be a historic megafight.

Vegas Golden Knights at New York Rangers odds, picks and predictions
The Vegas Golden Knights (31-15-6) visit the New York Rangers (24-23-4) Sunday with puck drop from Madison Square Garden set for 6 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Golden Knights vs. Rangers odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.
Season series: Rangers lead 1-0 with a 2-1 road victory on Jan. 11
Vegas has lost 3 of its last 4 games, including a 2-1 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday as a heavy (-285) home favorite as the Under (6.5) hit. G Ilya Samsonov did his part, stopping 22 of 24 shots, but the offense couldn’t find much. C Tomas Hertl scored the only goal for VGK.
The Rangers are also in a rough patch, dropping 3 straight games, including a 6-3 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday as -136 road favorites as the Over (6) hit. C J.T. Miller tried to keep New York in it with 2 goals, but they couldn’t slow down RW David Pastrnak, who lit them up with a hat trick and an assist.

- Moneyline (ML): Golden Knights -135 (bet $135 to win $100) | Rangers +115 (bet $100 to win $115)
- Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Golden Knights -1.5 (+180) | Rangers +1.5 (-220)
- Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)
Golden Knights at Rangers projected goalies
Adin Hill (19-9-4, 2.65 GAA, .901 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Jonathan Quick (6-5-2, 3.11 GAA, .897 SV%, 2 SO)
Hill is 1-2-2 in his last 5 starts, with his latest being a 4-3 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars, giving up 4 goals on 28 shots. He last faced the Rangers on Jan. 26, 2024, and earned the win after stopping 36 of 38 shots.
Quick had a tough January, starting 4 games with a 1-1-2 record, a 4.19 GAA, and .876 SV%. He hasn’t faced the Golden Knights since 2022, when he allowed 4 goals on 51 shots in a loss as a member of the LA Kings.

Golden Knights at Rangers picks and predictions
Prediction
Golden Knights 4, Rangers 3
Moneyline
BET GOLDEN KNIGHTS (-125).
While both teams are struggling, I really like Vegas at these odds, even on the road. The Rangers haven’t been great at home (12-11-2), and with backup Quick expected to be in goal, it’s a good spot for Vegas. Hill is a big upgrade over Quick, with G Igor Shesterkin getting a rest after a tough loss to the Bruins.
Vegas has been solid all year, sitting in the top 10 for both goals scored and goals allowed. They also have the rest advantage, having not played since Thursday while the Rangers are on the second half of a back-to-back. Vegas is the better team, and with the odds in their favor, I’m all over them on the road.
Puck line/Against the spread
PASS.
I do not want to play around with the puck line because both teams are not in their best form. I’ll keep my bet to the moneyline.
Over/Under
I would lean toward the Over here, mainly because both teams have been playing poorly of late, and with Quick in net, it’s hard to feel confident. There aren’t any strong trends either way. The O/U is 2-2-2 in their last 6 meetings, and both teams are around .500 in their last 10 games (Vegas 5-4-1, Rangers 5-5). It’s a tough call, so I just say AVOID from this one.

Ohio State Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly Leaving Buckeyes for NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders
Ohio State will have two new coordinators in 2025.
Chip Kelly is leaving the Buckeyes after one year as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to become the offensive coordinator of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel.
He becomes the third assistant coach to leave Ohio State this offseason, joining defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and offensive line coach Justin Frye. Knowles left the Buckeyes to become the defensive coordinator at Penn State while Frye left Ohio State to become the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive line coach.
Per the terms of the three-year contract Kelly signed with Ohio State last year, Kelly will owe Ohio State a $350,000 buyout for leaving Ohio State to become an NFL assistant coach.
Kelly had expressed interest in becoming an NFL offensive coordinator last offseason before he became Ohio State’s offensive coordinator. Kelly joined Ohio State’s staff last February, replacing Bill O’Brien when he left Ohio State after just three weeks as offensive coordinator to become the head coach at Boston College.
Ryan Day turned to Kelly, who Day’s had a close relationship with since Kelly was his offensive coordinator during his playing days at the University of New Hampshire, to take over Ohio State’s offensive play calling in 2024, marking the first time in Day’s six-year tenure as head coach that he delegated play-calling duties.
With Kelly calling Ohio State’s offensive plays and coaching the Buckeyes’ quarterbacks, Ohio State scored 35.7 points per game – an increase of more than five points per game from 2023 – and Will Howard completed a school-record 73% of his passes while leading the Buckeyes to a national championship.
Now, Ohio State will be looking for a new offensive coordinator for the third year in a row. The Buckeyes previously promoted Brian Hartline to offensive coordinator in 2023 after Kevin Wilson left to become the head coach at Tulsa, though Hartline – who now holds the title of co-offensive coordinator – was not the primary play-caller in that role.
While it’s possible Ohio State could turn to a familiar face like Wilson (who remains in the job market after Tulsa fired him in November) or Hartline to be the offensive coordinator again in 2025, Ohio State should have no shortage of interest from coordinators around the country in the opportunity to lead an offense that will feature a host of talented players led by superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Kelly returns to the NFL for the first time since he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-15 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. He went on to be the head coach at UCLA from 2018-23 before leaving that post to join Day’s staff last offseason, citing a desire to spend more time coaching football rather than the CEO aspects of being a head coach.
Ohio State Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly Leaving Buckeyes for NFL’s Las Vegas RaidersIn a shocking turn of events, Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has announced that he will be leaving the Buckeyes to join the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders as their new offensive coordinator. Kelly, who has been with Ohio State for the past two seasons, has reportedly been offered a lucrative contract by the Raiders that he simply couldn’t turn down.
Kelly’s departure comes as a blow to Ohio State fans, who have grown accustomed to his innovative offensive schemes and play-calling. Under Kelly’s guidance, the Buckeyes’ offense has been one of the most explosive in college football, averaging over 40 points per game during his tenure.
While Ohio State will undoubtedly miss Kelly’s coaching prowess, the Raiders are getting a proven offensive mastermind who has had success at both the college and professional levels. Kelly’s up-tempo, high-scoring offense should fit right in with the Raiders’ aggressive style of play, and fans in Las Vegas can expect to see some exciting football in the coming seasons.
As for Ohio State, the search for a new offensive coordinator is already underway. While Kelly’s shoes will be tough to fill, the Buckeyes are sure to attract top coaching talent as they look to maintain their status as one of the premier college football programs in the country.

LAS VEGAS (Feb. 1, 2025)—Las Vegas Aces President Nikki Fargas announced today that the team has acquired two-time WNBA champion and 2023 WNBA scoring leader Jewell Loyd as a free agent.
As part of a three-team trade, the Aces also received the No. 13 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft from Los Angeles. Kelsey Plum, who spent her first eight years in Las Vegas, heads to the Sparks and LA’s Li Yueru was dealt to Seattle. The Sparks received Seattle’s No. 9 pick in the 2025 draft and its second-round pick in 2026, while the Storm picked up LA’s No. 2 pick in this year’s draft and the Aces 2026 first round selection.
“We are thrilled to have Jewell join the Aces family,” said Fargas. “She is a talented player who will be an invaluable addition to our backcourt with her leadership and scoring ability. She is a champion, and we cannot wait to welcome Jewell to Las Vegas as we begin our quest for a third WNBA title.
“I also want to thank Kelsey for everything she’s done for and meant to this franchise. She is a fearsome competitor who was instrumental in Las Vegas winning back-to-back titles, and we wish her nothing but the best as she continues her career in Los Angeles.”
“I’m beyond excited to join the Las Vegas Aces and be part of such a highly driven organization,” said Loyd. “The culture, the energy, and the passion this team plays with is something I’ve always respected. I can’t wait to hit the court alongside this incredible group of players and contribute to the continued success of the Aces!”
The 5-10 guard, who was selected No. 1 by Seattle in the 2015 WNBA Draft, is a six-time WNBA All-Star, earned 2015 WNBA Rookie of the Year and is a three-time All-WNBA honoree. In 2023 she averaged a league-high 24.7 points per game, and owns a 10-year career scoring average of 16.9 ppg. She also has career averages of 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, while shooting 40.2% from the field and 34.8% from 3-point range.
A two-time Olympic and two-time World Cup gold medalist, Loyd aided Seattle to eight playoff appearances, winning the championships in 2018 and 2020. She also helped the Storm capture the 2021 Commissioner’s Cup title.
Heading into the 2025 season, Loyd’s 5,536 career point total ranks No. 21 on the league’s all-time scoring chart.
A three-year standout at the University of Notre Dame, Loyd led the Fighting Irish to three-straight NCAA Final Fours, while also claiming conference regular season and tournament titles all three years. A 2014 and 2015 All-American, Loyd earned 2015 ACC Player of the Year the 2013 Big East Rookie of the Year honors.
The Las Vegas Aces have made a big move in the offseason, welcoming two-time WNBA champion Jewell Loyd in a three-team trade. Loyd, who previously played for the Seattle Storm, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Aces roster. The trade, which also involved the Atlanta Dream and the Dallas Wings, saw Loyd join forces with A’ja Wilson, Liz Cambage, and the rest of the Aces squad. With Loyd’s scoring ability, playmaking skills, and championship pedigree, the Aces are poised to be a formidable force in the upcoming WNBA season.
Fans are excited to see Loyd in action alongside her new teammates and are eager to see how she will contribute to the team’s success. With the addition of Loyd, the Aces are looking like serious contenders for the WNBA title. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting season for Las Vegas Aces fans!

As basketball fans wait for the NBA trade deadline to heat up, the deals in the WNBA have already been flying ahead of the start of their season.
Along with center Brittney Griner’s move from the Phoenix Mercury to the Atlanta Dream, the biggest move of the WNBA offseason was a three-team deal that sent guard Jewell Loyd to the Las Vegas Aces and guard Kelsey Plum to the Los Angeles Sparks.
Plum, who has been with the Aces since their relocation and rebranding from the San Antonio Stars, posted a heartfelt farewell message on Instagram—paying tribute to the time she spent with the franchise.
“It’s been an incredible journey to be a part of the Aces organization, and Vegas will always hold a special place in my heart,” Plum wrote.
“Vegas is much more than the strip. It is a community of incredible people that have a real zest for life, and it is a true basketball town. The support and loyalty the city has for the Aces is incredible, and I’m so grateful that I got the chance to experience that love.”
Plum and Las Vegas won back-to-back titles in 2022 and ‘23, with the franchise quickly establishing itself as one of the best in the WNBA.
Now in Los Angeles, Plum will have the chance to team up with up-and-coming star forward Cameron Brink as the Sparks look to make a run at the title for the first time since 2016.
Dear Las Vegas,As I sit down to write this, my heart is heavy with mixed emotions. Today, I officially say goodbye to the city that has become my home over the past few years. It is with a heavy heart that I announce my trade to the Los Angeles Sparks.
Las Vegas, you have been so much more than just a city to me. You have been my sanctuary, my refuge, my safe haven. You welcomed me with open arms and embraced me as one of your own. You have watched me grow and evolve, both as a player and as a person. You have been there for me through the highs and lows, the wins and losses, the triumphs and tribulations.
I will forever be grateful for the love and support you have shown me. From the fans who cheered for me on game days to the teammates and coaches who pushed me to be the best version of myself, I am eternally thankful for the memories we have shared together.
Leaving Las Vegas is not easy, but I know that this is the next chapter in my journey. I am excited for the new challenges and opportunities that await me in Los Angeles. But no matter where my career takes me, Las Vegas will always hold a special place in my heart.
Thank you, Las Vegas, for everything. I will never forget the time I spent here and the memories we created together. I will always be a part of this city, and this city will always be a part of me.
With love and gratitude,
Kelsey Plum
