Jimmy Johnson Offered Sage Advice to Mike Vick Ahead of Norfolk State Job

Jimmy Johnson had some wisdom for Michael Vick as he takes a new job as the head coach at Norfolk State.

Vick was on set during Fox’s NFL pregame show on Sunday, where he and Johnson discussed the advice that had been shared in an earlier conversation between them.

“Recruit. Great players make great coaches,” Johnson said. “And to create the right kind of culture you need everybody in that organization… and how you do that, you have interaction with everybody in the organization. Because no one likes to be ignored. And especially no one likes to be ignored by the leader, and you’re the leader now.”

That’s phenomenal advice from a former head coach who knows a thing or two about winning.

Johnson won a national championship as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes in 1987, then won back-to-back Super Bowls (XXVII, XXVIII) as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He also won a national title as a player at Arkansas in 1964. He’s the kind of guy a future head coach should listen to.

Fox also shared a message from Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who coached Vick with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2009 to 2012. Reid congratulated his former player and said the kids at Norfolk State were lucky to have him.

Former NFL coach Jimmy Johnson recently offered some sage advice to former quarterback Michael Vick as he prepares to take on a coaching position at Norfolk State University. Johnson, who coached the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl victories, spoke to Vick about the importance of leadership, discipline, and perseverance in his new role.

Vick, who had a successful career as a quarterback in the NFL, will now be transitioning to a coaching role at Norfolk State, where he will be tasked with guiding and mentoring young players. Johnson, who has a wealth of experience in coaching and leadership, offered Vick valuable insights and advice to help him succeed in his new position.

As Vick embarks on this new chapter in his career, he can lean on the wisdom and guidance of a seasoned coach like Jimmy Johnson. With Johnson’s advice in mind, Vick is sure to make a positive impact on the players at Norfolk State and help them reach their full potential on and off the field.

Something special is happening in HBCU football.

Just days after Michael Vick announced he was taking over as head coach at Norfolk State, his former teammate DeSean Jackson has since joined the movement, stepping in to lead Delaware State’s football program.

And to think, just last week Beyoncé was the most exciting thing in the football stratosphere — not anymore.

These two NFL legends and stars in their own right, are bringing a fresh energy to HBCU athletics and shaking up the world of college football in the best way possible.

DeSean Jackson is no stranger to being a game-changer. Known as a big-play wide receiver, he continues to hold the record for most 60+ and 80+ yard catches in NFL history during his 15-season career, and he’s now turning his attention to Delaware State. The program had a tough 1-11 season, but Jackson is ready to help the Hornets rebuild and thrive. “The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment,” Jackson said, calling on his own journey of mentorship, discipline, and perseverance.

Delaware State’s Athletic Director, Tony Tucker, couldn’t be happier with the hire. He called Jackson “a perfect fit” and believes his experience as a player and leader will attract top talent and inspire a winning mentality. The excitement is already building as the Hornets look ahead to a new chapter under Jackson’s guidance.

Meanwhile, Michael Vick is taking on a similar challenge at Norfolk State, and the story feels just as personal. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback grew up in nearby Newport News, Virginia, and credits the community with shaping his rise to NFL stardom. Now he’s back, ready to pay it forward and lead a team that’s just as hungry for success as he was. “I know how to lead,” Vick said when his appointment was announced. For Norfolk State, his hiring is about more than football; it’s about hope and transformation.

These moves are part of a bigger trend, with NFL icons stepping into HBCU coaching roles and bringing more attention to these programs than ever before. Jackson and Vick are following in the footsteps of figures like Deion Sanders, whose success at Jackson State has shown what’s possible when football greatness meets HBCU pride.

As Jackson and Vick step into their coaching shoes, there’s no denying the buzz they’re creating. This is bigger than X’s and O’s—it’s about building something lasting, creating opportunities, and showing young Black athletes that greatness is possible both on and off the field.

DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick Are Bringing Star Power to HBCU Football

Two former NFL stars are making a big impact in the world of HBCU football. DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick have teamed up to bring their star power and expertise to help elevate the profile of historically black colleges and universities on the gridiron.

Both Jackson and Vick have deep roots in the HBCU community, with Jackson having attended California’s Long Beach Polytechnic High School, which has a strong HBCU pipeline, and Vick hailing from Virginia Tech, a school with a rich history of producing top HBCU talent.

Now, the dynamic duo is using their platform to shine a spotlight on HBCU football programs, working to recruit top talent and bring more attention to the incredible athletes and coaches in the HBCU ranks.

Jackson and Vick’s partnership is a game-changer for HBCU football, providing much-needed visibility and resources to help these schools compete at the highest level. With their star power and passion for the game, there’s no doubt that they’ll help take HBCU football to new heights.

Stay tuned for more exciting developments as DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick continue to make their mark on the world of HBCU football.

  • Former NFL great Michael Vick introduced as Norfolk State coach

Former NFL great Michael Vick introduced as Norfolk State coach

NORFOLK, Va. — To shouts of “Coach” and “Let’s go, Spartans,” Michael Vick was introduced Monday as Norfolk State‘s football coach, a homecoming for the former NFL star and a splashy, attention-grabbing hire for a program that has struggled in recent years.

Vick, who grew up about 30 minutes away in Newport News, donned a Norfolk State letterman’s jacket and cap in front of a crowd of supporters that included fellow Hampton Roads, Virginia, sports greats Allen Iverson and Bruce Smith.

Vick’s introduction was the culmination of a whirlwind courtship, the timing of which took even Vick by surprise.

“I was talking to my high school coach a couple weeks ago, and I told him I wanted to be a football coach one day, a couple years from now,” he said.

Vick said he then got a surprise call from former Virginia Tech football player Aaron Rouse, who is now a Virginia state senator, and Norfolk State athletic director Melody Webb, gauging his interest in becoming the Spartans’ coach.

“It wasn’t the easiest decision to make,” Vick said. “I’ve got family that I considered, I care about and I love. This requires a lot of change in lifestyle. But at the same time, it allows me to serve young men in my community.”

Vick led Virginia Tech to the national championship game as a redshirt freshman and was selected No. 1 overall in the 2001 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. A three-time Pro Bowl pick in six seasons in Atlanta, he revolutionized the quarterback position with his dynamic running ability.

Vick’s career was derailed by his conviction in 2007 for his involvement in a dogfighting ring. He pleaded guilty and served 21 months in federal prison before resuming his career in 2009. He retired in 2017 and had been working as an NFL analyst for Fox Sports and as an animal rights activist.

Vick’s past troubles were not mentioned Monday, except indirectly by Webb, who praised Vick’s ability to “inspire and overcome challenges” and said it is in keeping with the values the school wants to instill in its student-athletes.

“His journey is one of resilience and redemption and unwavering commitment to growth,” Webb said.

Vick has no coaching experience and is the latest former NFL star who had not coached before to take the helm of an HBCU program, a club that includes Deion Sanders and Eddie George.

Norfolk State has made only one playoff appearance since moving to FCS in 1997. The past five Spartan head coaches have had losing records, including Dawson Odoms, who was fired in November after going 15-30 in four seasons.

School officials hailed Vick’s hiring as transformational, however. Webb said Vick’s name “resonates around the world.”

Added rector Kim Brown: “Today we turn the corner and we embrace a new season for our football program.”

For his part, Vick said he won’t be outworked and that he will recruit hard in his home region, long a hotbed of talent. He said he attended Norfolk State games while playing youth football in Newport News and has followed the program over the years.

“It’s a lot of pressure being in your hometown,” he said. “I’ve always thrived off it.”

Former NFL great Michael Vick introduced as Norfolk State coach

Norfolk State University made a big splash in the sports world today as they officially introduced former NFL quarterback Michael Vick as their new head football coach. Vick, who played 13 seasons in the NFL, including stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers, will be taking on his first coaching role at the collegiate level.

Vick, known for his electrifying playmaking ability and dynamic style on the field, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Norfolk State program. He is excited to begin this new chapter in his career and is eager to help mold the next generation of football players.

“I am honored and grateful for this opportunity to lead the Norfolk State football program,” Vick said in a statement. “I am committed to helping our student-athletes succeed both on and off the field, and I look forward to building a winning culture here at Norfolk State.”

Fans and alumni of Norfolk State are thrilled to have a football legend like Michael Vick leading their team and are eager to see what he can accomplish in this new role. With his passion for the game and dedication to mentoring young athletes, Vick is sure to make a lasting impact on the program.

Stay tuned for more updates on Michael Vick and the Norfolk State football team as they embark on this new journey together.

  • How DeSean Jackson, Michael Vick can shift coaching landscape

How DeSean Jackson, Michael Vick can shift coaching landscape

Former NFL stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson have made headlines this past month after accepting
head-coaching positions at historically black colleges and universities.

Vick, a Virginia native, is heading home to lead the Norfolk State Spartans, while Jackson will be in charge of the Delaware State Hornets. Though not originally from Delaware, the university is less than 100 miles from Philadelphia, where Jackson played for the Eagles from 2008 to 2013 and 2019 to 2020.

Jackson State’s decision to hire Deion Sanders in 2020 laid the foundation for other HBCUs to seek out high-profile NFL stars to lead their programs. Sanders enjoyed great success at Jackson State, accumulating a 27-6 record. His signature moment came when he flipped then-No. 1 overall recruit and now Heisman winner Travis Hunter from Florida State to join him at the FCS level.

Norfolk State and Delaware State hope to replicate some of the hype and attention Sanders brought with him.

Though the scenarios may appear similar on paper, Jackson and Vick’s circumstances will help determine whether this method of selecting coaches will be successful in the long term.

Sanders served as an offensive coordinator and head coach for several prep schools dating back to 2012 before accepting the Jackson State position.

Jackson and Vick do not currently have as much experience.

Vick was a coaching intern for the Kansas City Chiefs during their 2017 training camp and later as an offensive analyst for the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football in 2019.

Jackson officially retired from the NFL in 2023 and spent last season as the offensive coordinator at Woodrow Wilson High School in California.

While the limited experience of Jackson and Vick may be a concern to some, it is a risk worth taking for their respective schools. Both schools have struggled to find success in recent years. The Spartans have not had a winning season since 2011, and the Hornets have not posted a winning record since 2007.

Jackson shared a statement about his new gig at Delaware State.

“The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy finding his way to manhood through mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline,” Jackson said. “If we build that kind of culture at Delaware State University, we will attract the right talent and radically change the trajectory of this program. I cannot wait to get started.”

Given their recent histories and the stature of their new coaches, both schools are likely to give Jackson and Vick ample time to build up their programs. Their fame and football expertise could help establish a strong culture and attract talent to their teams.

If either or both can successfully turn around their programs, this could shift how coaching candidates are evaluated. More HBCUs might take chances on first-time head coaches and reach out to former stars to boost recruitment and build a winning culture.

Norfolk State and Delaware State, both members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, are likely to meet this coming season. Each team will be worth monitoring beyond 2025.

DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick are two former NFL players who have the potential to shift the coaching landscape in a significant way. Both players have recently expressed interest in pursuing coaching careers, and their unique perspectives and experiences could bring a fresh perspective to the field.

DeSean Jackson, known for his speed and playmaking ability as a wide receiver, has a deep understanding of offensive strategies and the intricacies of the passing game. His knowledge of route running, timing, and creating separation could make him a valuable asset as a wide receivers coach or offensive coordinator. Jackson’s ability to mentor young players and help them develop their skills could be a game-changer for any team looking to improve their passing attack.

On the other hand, Michael Vick, a former quarterback known for his electrifying dual-threat abilities, could bring a new dimension to coaching as well. Vick’s experience as a player who revolutionized the quarterback position with his running ability and improvisational skills could make him a sought-after quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator. Vick’s ability to relate to and connect with young quarterbacks could be invaluable in helping them reach their full potential.

Overall, the addition of DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick to the coaching landscape could bring a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to the game. Their unique experiences as players and their passion for the game could help shape the next generation of coaches and players in the NFL. It will be exciting to see how these two former stars transition into coaching roles and leave their mark on the game.

  • Lamar Jackson passes Michael Vick for most rushing yards by NFL QB

Lamar Jackson passes Michael Vick for most rushing yards by NFL QB

HOUSTON — On a day when Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson didn’t feel like he was running at top speed — even though he was clocked at over 21 mph — the reigning NFL MVP added another title: the all-time leading rushing quarterback.

In running away with a 31-2 Christmas Day victory over the Houston Texans, Jackson ran just enough to surpass Michael Vick for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in NFL history. With 87 yards Wednesday, Jackson now has 6,110 career rushing yards, which is one more than Vick’s total.

Jackson broke the record with a 6-yard scramble in the third quarter that set up his 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mark Andrews.

“It feels unreal, to be honest with you,” Jackson said. “I’m grateful because that’s a record that’s been there for a long time. Michael Vick is one of my favorite players. That’s just dope.”

Vick held the record for 13 years after he eclipsed Randall Cunningham for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in October 2011.

The most impressive part of Jackson breaking Vick’s mark is the speed in which he did it. Vick needed 143 games over 13 years to amass his total, while Jackson broke the record in 102 games over seven seasons.

“That kind of speaks for itself,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Sometimes, I just shake my head and say, ‘That was really a great play. That was a great play.’ I’ve seen a lot of great plays from Lamar Jackson. I told him I was proud of him. I’m not just proud of him just because he makes great plays. I’m proud of him for all the things that go into making great plays and also for all the things he’s overcome along the way.”

The Ravens (11-5) are one win away from repeating as AFC North champions after Jackson put the game away in the third quarter. With Baltimore up 17-2, Jackson rushed 48 yards to the end zone without being touched.

Jackson’s maximum speed on that run was 21.25 mph, the highest top speed of his career as a ball carrier. Jackson gave a quizzical look when told of the speed he clocked.

“For real?” Jackson replied. “I was jogging.”

Jackson overtook Vick in a season in which he has run the fewest number of times. He even was criticized by his mother following a 24-19 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 1 for not running more. Jackson’s average rushing attempts are 8.4 per game — the first season he has been below nine carries per game.

On Wednesday, he delivered a reminder of how he can beat teams with his legs. He totaled 87 yards on four carries, including the 48-yard touchdown run — the third-longest rush of his career.

Jackson has four rushing scores of 40 yards or longer, which ties Kordell Stewart for the most by any quarterback since 1950.

“I’ve never seen someone run the ball like Lamar at quarterback — or honestly any other position,” Ravens offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley said. “The effortless nature of the way he runs the ball and makes these defenders not look as fast as they are, so I’m impressed by everything he does every day.”

It was not a perfect day for Jackson. Earlier this week, he talked about watching Beyoncé’s halftime show at NRG Stadium. But Jackson was nowhere to be found on the field when the 32-time Grammy winner performed.

“I was locked in,” Jackson said. “I was in here in the locker room preparing for the second half.”

In a historic moment for NFL quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson has surpassed Michael Vick for the most rushing yards in a single season by a QB. Jackson’s dynamic running ability has been on full display all season, and he has now etched his name in the record books with this incredible feat.

Vick was long considered the gold standard for dual-threat quarterbacks, but Jackson has taken his game to another level. His speed, elusiveness, and vision have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses, and he has proven to be a game-changer with his legs as well as his arm.

With this record-breaking performance, Jackson has solidified his place as one of the most electrifying players in the league and a true dual-threat weapon. It’s only fitting that he has surpassed Vick, a player who paved the way for quarterbacks like him to thrive in the NFL.

As Jackson continues to rewrite the record books and dazzle fans with his play, there’s no telling what he will accomplish next. One thing is for certain, though – he is a once-in-a-generation talent who is revolutionizing the quarterback position. Congratulations to Lamar Jackson on this incredible achievement! #NFL #LamarJackson #MichaelVick #RecordBreaking #DualThreatQB
