  • DRC cuts diplomatic ties with Rwanda over violence, UN calls emergency meet | News

The Congolese army and peacekeepers are trying to stop an M23 advance on Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is severing diplomatic ties with Rwanda and the United Nations Security Council has called an emergency meeting as the fighting between the Congolese army and the M23 armed group intensifies.

The three-year-old M23 rebellion in DRC’s mineral-rich east has intensified this month, with the rebels seizing control of more territory, prompting the UN to warn of the risk of a broader regional war.

The Congolese troops and the peacekeepers are trying to stop an M23 advance on the eastern city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.

M23, or the March 23 Movement, is an armed group that broke away from the DRC army more than 10 years ago. Since its resurgence in 2022, the group has continued to gain ground in the eastern DRC.

The DRC and the UN accuse Rwanda of supporting M23 with troops and weapons. Rwanda denies the charge.

At least nine peacekeepers, including two from the UN’s peacekeeping force MONUSCO, have been killed in the fighting in the eastern DRC, according to an Al Jazeera tally.

A UN official, speaking to The Associated Press news agency, confirmed the death of two UN soldiers. The peacekeepers were killed on Friday, the UN official told the agency on condition of anonymity.

Congolese army spokesman General Sylvain Ekenge told journalists DRC forces were working to “push back the enemy”. “Rwanda is determined to seize the city of Goma,” he said.

The United States, the United Kingdom and France have called on their citizens to leave Goma while airports and borders are still open.

    UN to relocate nonessential staff

M23 has made significant territorial gains in recent weeks, encircling Goma, home to about two million people and a regional hub for security and humanitarian efforts.

The escalation in fighting prompted an emergency UNSC meeting, originally set for Monday, to be moved up to Sunday.

The UN also said it would temporarily relocate nonessential staff, such as administrative staff, from Goma.

“Essential personnel remain on the ground, sustaining critical operations such as food distribution, medical assistance, shelter, and protection for vulnerable communities,” the UN said.

M23 is one of about 100 armed groups that have been vying for a foothold in mineral-rich eastern DRC, along the border with Rwanda, in a decades-long conflict that has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

Since 1998, approximately six million people have been killed while roughly seven million have been displaced internally.

More than 237,000 people have been displaced by the fighting in the eastern DRC since the beginning of this year, the UN’s refugee agency said in a report on Monday.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced that it is cutting diplomatic ties with neighboring Rwanda following escalating violence between the two countries. The decision comes after reports of clashes along the border, with both sides accusing each other of inciting the violence.

In response to the situation, the United Nations has called for an emergency meeting to address the growing conflict between the two African nations. The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the situation and explore potential solutions to de-escalate the tensions and prevent further violence.

The DRC-Rwanda border has long been a source of tension, with both countries accusing each other of supporting rebel groups and engaging in cross-border attacks. The recent escalation in violence has raised concerns about the potential for a broader conflict in the region.

As the international community works to address the crisis, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in order to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The UN meeting will provide an opportunity for key stakeholders to come together and work towards a sustainable solution that promotes peace and stability in the region.

  • Alex Zverev consoled by Jannik Sinner after losing final, heckled about domestic violence allegations, speech, video, latest news

The emotion of a third consecutive loss in a slam final was written all over Alex Zverev’s face, with opponent Jannik Sinner consoling the world No.2 after their Australian Open decider.

Watch every ball of The 2025 Women’s Ashes Series LIVE with no ad-breaks during play on Kayo | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer.

Zverev was clearly heartbroken by the loss, which wasn’t as close as his previous two slam finals, the German unable to earn a break point for the entire match.

He buried his face in his hands sitting on his bench after Sinner served out the match in straight sets, and was near tears as he stood for the trophy ceremony, with his younger rival consoling him.

SIMPLY SUPERB: Sinner’s near-perfect feat matches legends as cursed star loses another final

Before Zverev could speak, he was interrupted by a woman yelling: “Australia Believes Olya and Brenda! Australia Believes Olya and Brenda!”

Her comments were in reference to Zverev’s two former partners who accused him of domestic violence. Olya Sharypova did not go to the police, and a lengthy investigation by the ATP found insufficient evidence to support her allegations, with the report not published.

Brenda Patea, who is the mother of his child, took Zverev to court – in which the prosecutor alleged Zverev pushed her against a wall and strangled her with both hands following a “heated argument”.

After the trial was taken behind closed doors, it soon ended under a unique German court system ruling; similar to a settlement, it sees Zverev maintain his presumption of innocence, but no ruling of guilt or innocence was officially made, and he paid a €200,000 ‘financial stipulation’ to the state.

Notably, Zverev would not have had to pay if a judge had formally declared him not guilty; the process was effectively discontinued before a ruling could be made either way.

A situation that had already been handled awkwardly by tennis authorities, with Zverev allowed to play while being investigated (against the rules of many sports leagues, which have domestic abuse policies), was left unsolved with a lack of clarity on what really happened.

Zverev, of course, had to be allowed to continue playing once the legal process ended. But as former New York Times journalist turned Substack writer Ben Rothenberg explained at Bounces, “there’s a lot of glum, frustrated witnesses to his (Zverev’s) continued presence and preeminence in tennis”.

“It has a real, painful impact for many people who do not enjoy watching him play, many of whom cannot bring themselves to ever watch his matches because of how strongly they feel about him.”

Rothenberg added: “I’ve heard it described as a great “exhale” when Zverev loses at majors; with him into his second final in nine months, again many in the tennis world will be holding their breath until the last point of the men’s final.”

Zverev ignored the intrusion and won many fans inside Rod Laver Arena with his speech.

“It sucks standing here next to this thing (the winner’s trophy) and not being able to touch it, to be honest,” he said.

“But first of all, congratulations to Jannik. You more than deserve it. You are the best player in the world by far.

“I was hoping that I could be more of a competitor today, but you would just too good. It’s as simple as that. Congratulations to you. You really deserve it.

“Congrats to your team as well. You have done all the right things, you have done all the work, and there is nobody that deserves this trophy more.

“I want to thank my team. I mean, are trying to do all the right work. I’m just not good enough. It’s as simple as that.”

He continued: “But I really appreciate what everybody has done over the last few years, back from my ankle injury, to world No.2. To playing Grand Slam finals again. So, I really appreciate everything that they have done.

“And last but not least, I want to thank the crowd. The crowd has been nothing but amazing to me.

“You know, you guys pushed me through to the final. I really did think I had a chance, but here I am. You know, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to lift a trophy, but I’ll keep coming back, keep trying, and I’ll see you guys all next year. Thank you.”

Sinner spoke highly of Zverev to begin his own speech.

“You are an amazing player. Keep believing in yourself, because I think all players, coaches, whoever is involved in this sport knows how strong you are, not only as a player, but also as a person,” the world No.1 said.

“So, keep it up, keep working hard, because we all believe that you can lift one of these very, very soon. So, I wish you only the best.”

In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship, Jannik Sinner was seen consoling Alexander Zverev after his loss in the final match. Despite the intense competition on the court, Sinner showed empathy and compassion towards his opponent, demonstrating the true spirit of sportsmanship.

However, the touching moment was marred by a group of hecklers in the crowd who shouted derogatory comments about the domestic violence allegations against Zverev. The incident was captured on video and has sparked outrage among fans and spectators.

In response to the heckling, Zverev gave a powerful speech condemning domestic violence and stating that he is innocent of the accusations against him. He urged the crowd to focus on the game and show respect to all players, regardless of their personal lives.

The latest news on the situation is still developing, but it is clear that Zverev’s loss in the final was a difficult moment for him. Despite the challenges he faced, he showed grace and dignity in defeat, while Sinner’s act of kindness will be remembered as a shining example of sportsmanship in tennis.

  • Marilyn Manson won’t face sexual assault, domestic violence charges in L.A.: DA

    Generate Key Takeaways

After a four-year investigation into sexual assault and domestic violence allegations, singer Marilyn Manson will not face charges. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office announced its decision on Friday.

“We have determined that allegations of domestic violence fall outside of the statute of limitations, and we cannot prove charges of sexual assault beyond a reasonable doubt,” District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement.

Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, has been accused of sexual assault and/or misconduct by more than a dozen women, including ex-fiancée Evan Rachel Wood. He had been under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department since 2021 and denied wrongdoing.

“We recognize and applaud the courage and resilience of the women who came forward to make reports and share their experiences, and we thank them for their cooperation and patience with the investigation,” Hochman continued. “While we are unable to bring charges in this matter, we recognize that the strong advocacy of the women involved has helped bring greater awareness to the challenges faced by survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault.”

Game of Thrones actress Esmé Bianco sued Manson, alleging sexual, physical and emotional abuse in 2021. She and the “shock rocker” settled in January 2023.

Manson has been on a sold-out international world tour amid the investigation. On Wednesday, he announced his first U.S. tour dates since the scandal unfolded publicly.

    Story developing

In a disappointing turn of events, Marilyn Manson will not be facing sexual assault or domestic violence charges in Los Angeles. The District Attorney’s office has announced that they will not be pursuing criminal charges against the controversial rocker due to lack of evidence.

This decision comes after multiple women came forward with allegations of abuse and misconduct against Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner. Despite the disturbing nature of the accusations, prosecutors have determined that there is not enough evidence to move forward with a case.

Many fans and supporters of Manson’s accusers are outraged by this news, feeling that justice has not been served. However, it is important to remember that the legal system operates on the basis of evidence and proof, and without sufficient evidence, it is difficult to secure a conviction.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact Manson’s career and reputation moving forward. In the meantime, it is crucial to continue supporting and believing survivors of abuse, and to advocate for a culture that holds perpetrators accountable for their actions.

  • Marilyn Manson won’t be charged in rape, domestic violence cases

Marilyn Manson will not face criminal charges in a series of sexual assault and domestic violence allegations, Los Angeles County prosecutors said Friday.

The musician, whose real name is Brian Warner, had been under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department since 2021 after several women came forward to accuse him of rape and abuse. His accusers included “Westworld” actress Evan Rachel Wood and “Game of Thrones” actress Esme Bianco.

Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman said in a statement Friday that the statute of limitations had run out on the domestic violence allegations and that prosecutors did not believe they could prove the rape charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

“We recognize and applaud the courage and resilience of the women who came forward to make reports and share their experiences, and we thank them for their cooperation and patience with the investigation,” Hochman said in a statement. “While we are unable to bring charges in this matter, we recognize that the strong advocacy of the women involved has helped bring greater awareness to the challenges faced by survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault.”

The district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for further details on the decision. Warner’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

Allegations against Warner first surfaced in 2021 after Bianco sued Manson, alleging sexual assault, sexual battery and human trafficking. The two settled Bianco’s lawsuit in 2023. The same year, Manson settled a suit with an anonymous Jane Doe that also alleged rape.

Wood, who was in a romantic relationship with Warner for years, has levied perhaps the most detailed allegations against Warner, claiming the singer first assaulted her during a simulated sex scene on a music video shoot in 2007 and then proceeded to “groom” her for years.

A former assistant, Ashley Waters, also sued Manson, alleging harassment and assault.

L.A. County Sheriff’s Department investigators raided Manson’s mansion in 2021 and presented a case to the district attorney’s office in 2022. The victims grew frustrated as years went by without a filing decision, and Bianco and Hochman held a press conference lambasting former Dist. Atty. George Gascón’s handling of the case last year.

“Almost four years ago, I did what victims of rape are ‘supposed’ to do — I went to the police,” Bianco said in a statement issued by Hochman’s campaign last year. “Despite a thorough investigation and hundreds of pieces of evidence being submitted to the District Attorney’s office, I am still waiting for justice. In the meantime, I have received death threats, while my abuser continues to perform publicly.”

Gascón said last October that “new evidence” had come forward in the case but did not detail what it was.

Hochman did not immediately respond to a question about the past campaign event.

Recently, it has been reported that Marilyn Manson will not be charged in the rape and domestic violence cases brought against him. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has declined to pursue charges due to insufficient evidence.

This news comes as a relief to Manson and his fans, who have stood by him throughout the allegations. While the singer has faced backlash and backlash in the wake of the accusations, it seems that he will not be facing legal consequences at this time.

However, it is important to remember that this decision does not necessarily mean that Manson is innocent. It simply means that there is not enough evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

As always, it is crucial to support and believe survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. It is important to continue to hold abusers accountable for their actions and to create a safe and supportive environment for survivors to come forward.

Let us continue to stand with survivors and work towards a world where all forms of abuse and violence are taken seriously and addressed appropriately.

  • ‘Shameful’: Rome mayor dismayed after Lazio thugs attack Real Sociedad fans | Football violence

Nine Real Sociedad football fans were injured, one seriously, in central Rome late on Wednesday, allegedly after being violently attacked by hardcore “ultra” Lazio supporters.

According to reports in Italian media, the Spanish fans were among a group of about 70 allegedly set upon by what appeared to be about 80 Lazio ultras, who were armed with clubs, chains and knives and hammers, outside a pub on Via Leonina in the Monti district of the Italian capital. Security in the city has been upped before the Europa League match at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night.

Three of the people injured were in hospital with stab wounds. One, aged 23, is in a serious condition, according to reports. Three others were discharged after treatment and three more were reportedly examined for their injuries in a hospital emergency unit before leaving.

Italian police have seized the weapons used in the attack and are examining CCTV images to identify those responsible. In a video clip purporting to be of the incident recorded by a Monti resident and posted on social media, a gang, dressed in black and believed to be the Lazio ultras, are running along a street and can be heard shouting “we kill everyone”.

La Repubblica newspaper reported that the attack happened as the Spanish fans were having a drink at the Irish pub Finnegan.

It is unclear whether Real Sociedad ultras, a term that originated in Italy but is used globally to define groups of hardcore, and often violent, football supporters, were among the group. Police are working to establish whether the attack was planned by the suspected Lazio ultras, who are on the extreme right of the political spectrum, against their left-wing counterparts.

Walter Verini, a senator and coordinator of an anti-mafia parliamentary committee, told the LaPresse news agency the attack was “further confirmation of the severity of a problem which, unfortunately, concerns parts of a fanbase.

“Not all fans are criminals. It seems to be understood that this armed violence is somehow also linked to delusional political extremists, in the case of far-right Lazio.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

The Rome mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, said the attacks were “shameful and unacceptable”. He said: “Rome strongly rejects these scenes of crazy violence which offend the city, its citizens and the spirit of sport. I trust that the investigations by police will soon shed light on those responsible because the Italian capital does not want and does not deserve to be remembered for such barbarism.”

The Mayor of Rome expressed her dismay and shame after a group of Lazio thugs attacked Real Sociedad fans ahead of their Europa League match. The violent incident occurred outside a bar in the city center, leaving several fans injured and sparking outrage among football fans worldwide.

This senseless act of violence not only tarnishes the reputation of Rome as a host city for international sporting events, but also highlights the persistent issue of football hooliganism that continues to plague the sport. The Mayor called for swift action to be taken against the perpetrators, urging authorities to ensure the safety and security of all fans attending the match.

Football should be a sport that unites people from different backgrounds and cultures, not a platform for violence and aggression. It is time for clubs, fans, and authorities to come together to tackle this issue and ensure that such shameful incidents do not happen again.
