  • Bears owner Virginia Halas McCaskey dies at 102

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Virginia Halas McCaskey, who inherited the Chicago Bears from her father, George Halas, but avoided the spotlight during four-plus decades as principal owner, has died. She was 102.

McCaskey’s family announced through the team that she died Thursday. She had owned the Bears since her father’s death on Oct. 31, 1983.

“While we are sad, we are comforted knowing Virginia Halas McCaskey lived a long, full, faith-filled life and is now with the love of her life on earth,” the family said. “She guided the Bears for four decades and based every business decision on what was best for Bears players, coaches, staff and fans.”

Like her father, a co-founder of the NFL, McCaskey kept the team in family hands. She gave operational control and the title of president to her eldest son, Michael McCaskey, who served as chairman until being succeeded by brother George McCaskey in 2011.

During her stewardship, the Bears won a Super Bowl in 1986 and lost a second 21 years later.

“Virginia Halas McCaskey, the matriarch of the Chicago Bears and daughter of George Halas, the founder of the NFL, leaves a legacy of class, dignity, and humanity,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Faith, family, and football — in that order — were her north stars and she lived by the simple adage to always ‘do the right thing.’ The Bears that her father started meant the world to her and he would be proud of the way she continued the family business with such dedication and passion. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the McCaskey and Halas families and Bears fans around the world.”

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in a statement that the NFL has “lost a legend.”

“I wish peace and comfort to the McCaskey Family and everyone within the Chicago Bears organization upon the passing of Virginia Halas McCaskey,” Khan said. “The Bears were my first football love, and many years later it would be my immense privilege to learn from Mrs. McCaskey and her family as I explored a future in the NFL. Mrs. McCaskey did everything the right way, and her focus on family and the people in her life only begin to honor her legacy. We have lost a legend, but her positive impact on our game and league will last forever.”

McCaskey, the older of Halas’ two children, never expected to find herself in charge. Her brother, George “Mugs” Halas Jr., was being groomed to take over the team, but died suddenly of a heart attack in 1979.

McCaskey assumed ownership upon her father’s death in 1983, and her late husband, Ed McCaskey, succeeded Halas as chairman. Not long after, she turned over control to Michael, the eldest of her 11 children.

“I think it’s important that all of our family remembers that we really haven’t done anything to earn this,” McCaskey said in a rare interview in 2006. “We’re just the recipients of a tremendous legacy. I use the word ‘custodian,’ and we want to pass it on the best way we can. … We’ve been working on that for a long time.”

McCaskey’s official title was secretary to the board of directors. Despite her generally hands-off approach and low public profile, she occasionally exercised ultimate authority on team decisions as matriarch of the family.

One of those involved a 1987 lawsuit brought by the children of “Mugs” Halas, which was resolved by a stock buyout of their shares. A more recent reminder came in December 2014, when George McCaskey announced the firings of coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery at a news conference, and was asked to describe his mother’s role in the process.

He paused, struggling to describe her unhappiness with the just-ended 5-11 season, and the team’s generally fading fortunes.

“She’s pissed off,” George McCaskey said. “I can’t think of a 91-year-old woman that that description would apply, but in this case, I can’t think of a more accurate description.

“Virginia McCaskey has been on this Earth for eight of the Bears’ nine championships, and she wants more,” he added a moment later. “She feels that it’s been too long since the last [Super Bowl win], and that dissatisfaction is shared by her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She’s fed up with mediocrity. She feels that she and Bears fans everywhere deserve better.”

Virginia McCaskey came by her fandom honestly. According to family members, she often wouldn’t serve dessert on Sundays when the Bears lost. In that same 2006 interview, she recalled attending the first playoff game in league history, when she was 9.

The Bears and Portsmouth Spartans finished the 1932 season in the first tie for first place, so the league added a game to determine a champion. Because of snow, the game was moved indoors to the old Chicago Stadium, and the Bears won 9-0 playing on an 80-yard field that came right to the walls.

“I remember I didn’t save my ticket stub, but one of my cousins had saved his,” McCaskey said. “We sat in the second balcony and the ticket price was $1.25.

“I took it to one of the Super Bowls to show [former commissioner] Pete Rozelle and then I don’t know what happened to it afterward,” she added. “But that’s OK.”

Her tenure as the Bears’ owner included the establishment of the Bears Care program in 2005. The Bears said that Bears Care has issued grants totaling more than $31.5 million to 225 qualifying agencies to improve the quality of life for people in the Chicago area, especially disadvantaged children and their families. Bears Care also supported health awareness programs focusing on breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

McCaskey had 11 children, eight sons and three daughters. She is survived by her sons Patrick, Edward Jr., George, Richard, Brian and Joseph, and daughters Ellen Tonquest, Mary and Anne Catron. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Virginia Halas McCaskey, the longtime owner of the Chicago Bears, at the age of 102. McCaskey, the daughter of Bears founder George Halas, was a beloved figure in the football world and a dedicated steward of the Bears franchise.

McCaskey took over ownership of the Bears in 1983 following her father’s passing and remained at the helm for nearly four decades. Under her leadership, the Bears experienced both highs and lows, but McCaskey’s unwavering commitment to the team and its fans never wavered.

Known for her grace, generosity, and love of the game, McCaskey leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be felt for generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and the entire Bears organization during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Virginia Halas McCaskey. You will be dearly missed.

  • Jaden Schutt, Tobi Lawal help Virginia Tech hold off Virginia 75-74

    Associated Press

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Jaden Schutt had 18 points and Tobi Lawal scored 17 to help Virginia Tech escape with a 75-74 victory over Virginia on Saturday.

Virginia Tech hit 5 of 6 free throws and Lawal and Schutt followed with baskets to cap a 9-0 run that gave the Hokies a 69-56 lead with 6:32 remaining. Virginia chipped away until Andrew Rohde scored in the paint with 45 seconds left to cut the Cavaliers’ deficit to 75-72.

Taine Murray grabbed an errant shot by Lawal with eight seconds left and the Hokies fouled Isaac McKneely before he could fire off a 3-pointer. McKneely made both foul shots and the Cavaliers fouled Mylyjael Poteat, who missed twice. Virginia had a chance to win coming out of a timeout with four seconds left, but Rohde’s floater rolled off the rim at the buzzer.

Schutt made 6 of 11 shots with four 3-pointers for the Hokies (10-12, 5-6 Atlantic Coast Conference). He added five rebounds. Lawal made 6 of 12 shots with a 3-pointer and also had five boards.

McKneely finished with 19 points and seven assists to pace the Cavaliers (10-12, 3-8). Rohde had 12 points, Dai Dai Ames scored 11 and Murray added 10 points and six rebounds.

Schutt hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 in the first half to help Virginia Tech take a 38-31 lead into intermission. McKneely had nine points to lead Virginia.

The Cavaliers lead the all-time series 98-61, including a 43-14 advantage at home.

Virginia plays at Pittsburgh on Monday. Virginia Tech will host SMU on Wednesday.

In a thrilling ACC showdown, Jaden Schutt and Tobi Lawal came up clutch for Virginia Tech as they held off Virginia with a narrow 75-74 victory.

Schutt, a freshman guard, showed no signs of nerves as he scored a team-high 22 points and hit several key shots down the stretch to keep the Hokies ahead. His ability to create his own shot and knock down tough jumpers was instrumental in Virginia Tech’s success.

Meanwhile, Lawal, a junior forward, was a force in the paint on both ends of the floor. He grabbed crucial rebounds, blocked shots, and made his presence felt in the post, finishing with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite a late surge from Virginia, Schutt and Lawal’s heroics helped Virginia Tech withstand the pressure and secure a hard-fought victory. Their performances showcased their talent and potential, giving Hokies fans plenty to be excited about moving forward in the season.

Overall, it was a memorable win for Virginia Tech, thanks in large part to the contributions of Jaden Schutt and Tobi Lawal.

Virginia (10-11, 3-7 ACC) is set to host Virginia Tech (9-12, 4-6 ACC) in the Commonwealth Clash on Saturday at 4pm ET (ACCN) at John Paul Jones Arena. Follow along with score updates, play-by-play, and live analysis for the game in the thread below. Updates will be posted at each timeout in reverse chronological order with the most recent updates at the top of the article. Refresh the page for updates.

Ishan Sharma is left alone at the top of the key and McKneely finds him for the open triple. Schutt loses Sharma on a screen and hits the open three, his third three of the game and he’s up to 13 points. Murray pulls the trigger on a corner three and knocks it down. Poteat elbows Robinson in the face and gets two free throws out of it, knocking down both. Tyler Johnson gets inside and scores over Ames to push the Hokie lead to seven. Virginia Tech takes a 38-31 lead to the halftime break.

    Virginia Tech 38, Virginia 31 | Halftime

Cofie comes up with another block and that sparks a fastbreak opportunity with Rohde feeding ahead to Taine Murray, who attacks in stride and throws down a dunk. Virginia Tech gets back-to-back easy buckets from Poteat at the rim to push the margin back to five points. McKneely backs down Hammond and spins into a baseline jumper. Tyler Johnson finds Burnham in the opposite corner for a three-pointer and he knocks it down. Ron Sanchez calls timeout with his Cavaliers trailing by six points.

    Virginia Tech 31, Virginia 25 | 3:26 1H

Ames sets up Ishan Sharma for a jumper and he knocks it down. Tobi Lawal scores off the glass plus a foul on Power. Virginia has been called for six fouls in the first nine minutes of the game. Blake Buchanan is called for his third personal foul with 9:33 to go in the first half. Mylyjael Poteat goes 1/2 from the stripe. Cofie blocks Lawal on one end and Virginia frees up McKneely for a three on the other. UVA gets another stop and then Ishan Sharma gets a clean look from the left wing and buries it. It’s a lightning-fast 6-0 run for the Cavaliers to tie the game at 21-21. Jaydon Young silences the crowd with a pull-up three late in the clock.

    Virginia Tech 24, Virginia 21 | 7:26 1H

During the timeout, Virginia was assessed an “administrative” technical foul that was related to Ron Sanchez walking all the way across the court to address the officials at the beginning of the timeout. As a result, Schutt makes two free throws. Anthony Robinson was fouled before the timeout, so he takes his two foul shots and sinks them both. TJ Power checks into the game and immediately makes an impact play, snagging an offensive rebound and passing out to Taine Murray for a wide-open three. Schutt answers with his second three-pointer of the game. McKneely hits a stepback jumper, but Schutt responds with a stepback jumper of his own. Schutt has 10 points already. Patrick Wessler grabs an offensive rebound and scores off the glass.

    Virginia Tech 17, Virginia 13 | 11:30 1H

Isaac McKneely finds an open Blake Buchanan on the pick and roll and Buchanan glides to the basket for the game’s first points. Ben Hammond gets Dai Dai Ames to bite on a pump fake and he scores plus a foul. Ames atones for his foul with a nice mid-range jumper. McKneely gets an open look at the free throw line and knocks down the jumper. Jaden Schutt hits a three-pointer to pull the Hokies even at 6-6. Buchanan is called for his second personal foul and Tobi Lawal hits two free throws; Anthony Robinson replaces Buchanan.

    Virginia Tech 8, Virginia 6 | 15:54 1H

Here are the starting lineups for both teams:
Virginia Tech: Jaden Schutt, Tyler Johnson, Ben Hammond, Tobi Lawal, Mylyjael Poteat
Virginia: Dai Dai Ames, Taine Murray, Isaac McKneely, Blake Buchanan, Jacob Cofie

  • Previewing UVA basketball’s rivalry game against Virginia Tech

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team scored 80 points for the first time all season as they beat the Miami Hurricanes 82-71 on Wednesday. With the win, UVA is back in the ACC Tournament field! They’re currently 13th in the conference, with a 10-11 overall record (3-7 in the ACC). And sitting one spot above the ‘Hoos is none other than Mike Young and the Virginia Tech Hokies (9-12, 4-6 in the ACC).

The Hokies lost their entire rotation from last season. I’m not exaggerating. Eight of their top nine scorers are gone, including multi-year starters Sean Pedulla, Hunter Catoor, and Lynn Kidd. The only returner who contributed at all last season is Mylyjael Poteat, who is now the team’s second leading scorer.

Because of this, Tech was picked to finish 14th in the ACC Preseason Poll. Expectations were low for Mike Young’s team, and they’re likely on their way to missing the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. Young’s seat is heating up.

No matter how ugly things are in Charlottesville and Blacksburg, this rivalry always brings out intensity and iconic moments when these two teams face twice each season.

Here are three things to know, two players to watch, and one prediction for Saturday afternoon’s game at JPJ.

Time: Saturday, February 1st at 4:00 ET

    Watch: ACCN

    Three Things to Know

Six years ago, it looked UVA and Tech might take over the ACC…things change fast

The year is 2018. Virginia is the No. 2 ranked team in the country with a 23-1 record as they host Virginia Tech. The Hokies are 17-7, in need of a statement win to solidify their NCAA Tournament resume. A defensive rock-fight ends up 49-49 at the end of regulation. With six seconds left in overtime, Tech’s Kerry Blackshear makes a put-back layup to win the game for the Hokies, 61-60, stunning a sold-out JPJ crowd.

While the loss devastated Virginia fans, it seemed like the two programs were forging the second-best rivalry in the ACC, with head coaches Tony Bennett and Buzz Williams in it for the long haul. Just two years later, after his best season with the Hokies when they earned a four-seed in the NCAA Tournament and were inches away from beating Duke in the Sweet Sixteen, Williams left to take the head coaching job at Texas A&M (Virginia swept the Hokies that year, including one of the most perfect games played at JPJ, an 81-59 butt-whopping).

And, as we all know, NIL and the transfer portal became too much for Bennett, and he stepped down prior to the 2024-25 season.

The once-promising programs have spiraled down to the pit of the ACC, alongside teams like Boston College and Georgia Tech (some pretty unpleasant company). Both teams may have new coaches in the next few years, as they look to rebuild their programs and restore this historic rivalry.

    Tech has turnover troubles

Tony Bennett taught Virginia fans the importance of protecting the basketball. His teams were consistently top 10 in lowest turnover rate. In the first season without Bennett, Virginia has dropped all the way down to 196th in turnover percentage (17.5%).

Somehow, the Hokies are much worse. They turn the ball over on more than 20% of their possessions (321st in Division 1). That means that one in every five possessions, they aren’t even getting a shot attempt up. Point guard is a major weakness for the Hokies, particularly since they lost veteran ball-handlers Sean Pedulla and Hunter Catoor.

Not only do the Hokies not take care of the ball, they also can’t force turnovers. They’re 242nd in turnover-percentage defense. They don’t produce steals or blocks.

Tech is basically like an NFL team that throws two picks and coughs up two fumbles each game, while their defense comes up with absolutely nothing. If Virginia had last year’s personnel — featuring turnover-forcing monsters Reece Beekman and Ryan Dunn — they’d win this game with ease. But the Cavaliers don’t force turnovers either. At the end of the day, whichever team can break their statistical trends and win the turnover battle will likely win the game.

These two teams are very similar

Virginia and Virginia Tech are similar in a lot of ways, not just because they’re from the same state and near the bottom of the ACC standings.

Stylistically, both teams play at a slow tempo, rarely scoring on fast breaks and taking the time to run lengthy, half-court sets. Mike Young loves to design creative sets to get his shooters open for threes, often involving multiple off-ball screens and passes. Each team’s offensive strength is their three-point shooting (Virginia shoots 37.4 %, Tech shoots 36.3 %). Neither team gets to the free-throw line, and they both struggle to score inside.

Roster-wise, these are two of the youngest teams in the ACC. Mike Young’s squad is especially Young (obvious pun). The Hokies start two sophomores and a freshman, which is pretty rare in the era of the transfer-portal and fifth-years.

Slow tempo and youth could make for a pretty ugly game, but I’m banking on both teams to hit enough threes to keep it interesting.

    Two Players to Watch

    Forward Tobi Lawal (No. 1)

Tech’s leading scorer is a 6-foot-8 junior from London. He was a valuable bench piece for Ryan Odom and VCU last season (Odom is a name to track as a candidate for the Virginia job). In a starting role this season, Lawal leads the Hokies in scoring and rebounding (12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game).

He’s a great athlete with long arms and an incredible vertical. Lawal is at his best catching the ball on the wing and slashing to the basket. He’s not a great jump-shooter, but he’ll hit the open three (18/40 from three on the season). Lawal is a force in transition after a steal or block, and he’s a surprisingly capable passer and cutter.

The most important thing for Virginia will be to box him out, keeping him off the offensive glass. If they can limit his easy second chance opportunities, it should be hard for the Hokies to score.

    Forward Mylyjael Poteat (No. 34)

Poteat is the lone impact returner from last year’s Virginia Tech team. The 6-foot-9, 260 pound senior is a pure paint beast. He’s the Hokies best screener, and frequently gets the ball back on pick-and-rolls, where he slams down backboard-shaking dunks like a baby Shaquille O’Neal. Here’s an example from last season:

Poteat’s averaging 10 points per game, and pretty much everything comes from the paint.

If UVA’s bigs don’t put a body on him, then Poteat will Eat (even more obvious pun). He’s got slow feet on defense, and isn’t much of a rim-protector. Virginia should still look to draw him away from the basket with high ball-screens to create mismatches with quicker guards.

    One Prediction

This is the final game of the easiest four-game stretch in Virginia’s schedule. They went 2-1 in the first three games, with wins over Boston College and Miami as well as an embarrassing loss to Notre Dame.

The road only gets harder, and Sanchez’s team can’t afford to drop winnable games like this one if they are to make the ACC Tournament field. The ‘Hoos are favored by five points on KenPom, and I think that’s how the game will end up. The status of Elijah Saunders and Andrew Rohde is worth monitoring, as they’re probably two of Virginia’s three best players and they were sidelined last game against Miami with injuries.

If those two play, I think Virginia’s guards should be able to get into the paint with ease. Both teams can hit the three-ball, so UVA has to win that duel. I’d bet on McKneely over nearly any other shooter in the country.

    Virginia 63, Virginia Tech 57

The highly anticipated rivalry game between the University of Virginia’s basketball team and Virginia Tech is just around the corner, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Both teams have had successful seasons so far, with UVA ranking in the top 10 and Virginia Tech not far behind.

This matchup is sure to be intense, as both teams are known for their strong defense and high-scoring offense. UVA’s pack-line defense will be put to the test against Virginia Tech’s fast-paced style of play. The Cavaliers will need to shut down the Hokies’ leading scorers and limit their three-point shooting to come out on top.

On the other hand, Virginia Tech will have to find a way to break through UVA’s stifling defense and capitalize on their offensive opportunities. The Hokies will need a strong performance from their key players to secure a victory on the road.

Overall, this game is shaping up to be a must-watch for college basketball fans. The rivalry between these two teams always brings out the best in both squads, and this matchup is sure to be no different. Tune in to see who will come out on top in this thrilling showdown between UVA and Virginia Tech.

  • Game Preview: Virginia Tech at Virginia

Virginia Tech has been a difficult team to figure out this season with many highs and lows. Fortunately and unfortunately, the Hokies come up against a Virginia Cavaliers team that is in the same boat so this battle in the Commonwealth has multiple unknowns entering this contest. The Hokies (9-12, 4-6) have started to figure some pieces out and turn things around while the Cavaliers (10-11, 3-7) have won two of their last three with some talented players starting to emerge. Virginia opened as 4.5-point favorites for the 4 PM tipoff on the ACC Network.

    (Photo: Benny Sieu, Getty)

Virginia started the season through some turmoil when legendary coach Tony Bennett announced his retirement shortly before the season began and Ron Sanchez took over. Some players decided to leave the program at that point and the team had to rally together to steady the ship. There have been some rough stretches but defending John Paul Jones Arena has been much better than their road performances so the energy and focus shouldn’t be in question heading into this one.

The Cavaliers have one of the slowest paces in the country, the second slowest in all of Division I actually, and are still playing good defense, two of the staples under Tony Bennett. Rebounding has been an issue with this team when looking at the advanced numbers but if the defense plays the way they are capable it shouldn’t be a major issue. Much like Virginia Tech fans have seen this season, there isn’t one major glaring issue but more a problem with consistency and getting repeat performances.

Isaac Mckneely is the offensive star for the Cavaliers but the 6’4″ wing impacts a little bit of everything. McKneely is averaging 13 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while hitting 43% from three. Isaac has had two 20+ point performances in the last three games as well, showing that he is still seeking the extra pass keeping the right flow. Andrew Rohde joins him on the wing and is the assist leader, averaging 8.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Rohde has actually been really struggling with his scoring but his passing has been very useful. Andrew missed the last game with injury and his status for the game tonight is still up in the air but getting him back should help the offense even through his poor shooting stretch.

Elijah Saunders is the best post player for Virginia but is also questionable for the game today. Saunders missed the last game but when he is active he is a very good rebounder who is a threat from all over the court. Elijah gets the most attention outside of McKneely so while the pieces worked against a struggling Miami, having that extra factor so the Hokies can’t focus down Isaac would be impactful. Jacob Cofie joins Saunders in the post and is on a good run of for as the 6’10” freshman has shown off some impressive rebounding and scoring. Cofie is second on the team in steals and blocks so his defense is what stands out but with his offensive breakout he is becoming an exciting player for the Cavaliers.

Dai Dai Ames, Blake Buchanan, and Taine Murray are the other three to highlight. Dai Dai is the point guard and while his assist numbers aren’t the best he has been solid running the offense. Ames doesn’t always like to attack from the perimeter but has been very good when deciding to shoot it, hitting 39.5% from three this season. Buchanan is the prototypical post who can attack the glass and the basket. Blake is coming off a 16 point, 9 rebound performance against the Hurricanes and is one of the better players getting to the line on the roster. Buchanan is very good defensively and is the blocks leader for the Cavaliers with 24 blocks so far this season with the entire Virginia Tech team logging just 33. Murray has explosive attributes but inconsistency is a big issue. The 6’5″ wing is coming off a 20-point game and can be a very good three point shooter but is averaging just 4.5 points this season. Virginia Tech has struggled with perimeter defense at times this season and will have to put a special focus on guarding guys like Murray and McKneely to keep the game close, especially if Saunders and Rohde miss another game.

Other players like Ishan Sharma, TJ Power, and Anthony Robinson will get minutes but haven’t shown any sort of statistical breakout in any category to nail them down. Sharma would be the most likely as the lone guard of this trio and a good three point shooter but chipping away and staying as a role player is the most likely expectation. The Cavaliers have been shooting the ball well so if they can keep knocking down perimeter shots with their playmaking ability it should be a good game.

Mike Young just earned his 400th career win and it came in an upset bid over Florida State on the road. That game was also the perfect highlight of the consistency issues the Hokies have shown throughout the season. An incredible first half performance saw the Virginia Tech defense hold Florida State to just 15 points and take a 20-point lead into halftime. The second half saw the Seminoles rally and start asking some real questions about whether or not they could storm all the way back to steal it before some clutch plays ended that and the Hokies held on. With offensive droughts already an issue, coming up against a defense like Virginia further emphasizes how important it will be to limit turnovers and dead possessions because earning baskets will be a hard enough challenge without the simple mistakes.

Tobi Lawal is where the focus has to start for the Hokies and he has had an incredible conference slate. The electric Lawal has been great on the glass which has led to finishes on the block. Tobi has added a perimeter shot this season and his floor spacing has been an important part of the Hokies offense lately. If Saunders does miss this game it could give Tobi an enhanced opportunity to try and take over. Mylyjael Poteat is his primary partner and the big, bruising center is a solid rebounder and paint scorer who is hard to move on both ends. The Hokies biggest weakness is shot blocking so the size of the Cavaliers on both ends could prove to be an issue for the 6’8″ Poteat, but Virginia Tech is a better team when playing through the post so getting these two involved early will be a priority.

Three point shooting hasn’t been the best attribute throughout the season but the team has started to find their range more and that starts with Jaden Schutt. There was a rough stretch of play for Schutt and he dropped out of the starting lineup but since that point he aggressively seeks his shot and pushes the offense forward. Ben Burnham is a forward who can attack the rim or stretch the court and his size could bring an advantage if Rohde is missing. Then there is someone like Jaydon Young who has breakout potential and can light it up from the perimeter. Consistency has been an issue for all three players but all three can easily break out and it wouldn’t be a surprise for any of them to finish the game scoring in the mid-teens.

Ben Hammond is the point guard for the Hokies and he brings contagious energy to the court. Hammond’s shot is inconsistent at best but he does a good job setting the offense up and getting open looks for his teammates. Turnovers can be an issue but after returning from injury he has done well limiting his silly turnovers and freshman mistakes. Brandon Rechsteiner and Rodney Brown split time behind him both as point guards and wings. Rechsteiner is a great shooter from midrange and the perimeter. Brandon really struggled with turnovers as a point guard which is why he switched to play off the ball more and it has found some success. Brown is in a similar boat as a good shooter, especially from the perimeter, but a player who can turn it over frequently. Rodney has really stepped up from the beginning of the season and his breakout helped launch the team forward after the beginning of conference play looked like it could be bleak for the Hokies.

The final player to really highlight is Tyler Johnson. Already one of the best players on the team as a true freshman, Johnson is one of the best rebounders on the team and has been guarding the primary scorer over the last month. While Tyler has been matched up with more forwards because of his strength, he could see time against McKneely this afternoon to make sure he doesn’t break out. Johnson is best attacking the rim offensively but has started showing a perimeter touch to highlight his well-rounded game and why the coaching staff is so high on his potential.

    Prediction

There is more context to add throughout the article but the inconsistency of both teams makes it difficult to properly state. If Virginia Tech shows up and rebounds well they could take this game very comfortably. If Virginia comes out and forces dead possessions, even only a couple, it ruins the Hokies rhythm and once it is gone they have shown it can be very difficult to get back. Charlottesville has been a difficult place for Virginia Tech to travel but the uncertainty around the two injured Cavaliers takes some of the nerves away as it seems like at least one will not suit up.

I think this is a game where the Hokies match up well and if they can knock down a couple perimeter shots it will really open things up for Lawal to go to work. The defense of the Cavaliers is not elite this year but it is still noteworthy enough to give pause, especially about what the big men can do. If Saunders does make it back I expect it to be a true last possession type of game. No outcome should be a shock with the injury questions and Hokies perimeter shooting stepping up I am giving the slight edge to Mike Young’s squad.

Final: Virginia Tech 68 Virginia 60

  • Virginia Pilot Responds After She Is Falsely Targeted Over Black Hawk Crash

Jo Ellis, a helicopter pilot in the Virginia Army National Guard, was falsely identified as the captain of the crashed Black Hawk helicopter in thousands of social media posts this week. The flurry of falsehoods were so extreme that Ms. Ellis, who is transgender, posted a “proof of life” video to Facebook clarifying that she is alive and had not flown the crashed chopper.

The falsehoods, which tried to tie Ms. Ellis’s transgender identity to the tragedy, spread online shortly after President Trump and his allies attempted to tie the crash in Washington, D.C., to so-called “D.E.I. programs,” an array of initiatives meant to boost diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. There is no evidence that such programs played any role in the crash.

“I understand some people have associated me with the crash in D.C. and that is false,” Ms. Ellis said in a video posted to her Facebook account. “It is insulting to the families to try to tie this to some sort of political agenda. They don’t deserve that. I don’t deserve this.”

Ms. Ellis is a Black Hawk pilot who has served for 15 years in the Virginia Army National Guard, according to a blog post she published Tuesday on Smerconish, an independent news website, which detailed her transition while in the armed forces. Ms. Ellis did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Posts and reposts about Ms. Ellis surged Friday morning as thousands of accounts on X shared her photos and details online. The posts earned hundreds of thousands of views on the platform, according to a review by The New York Times and data from Tweet Binder, a company that collects data on the social network. “Jo Ellis” was the No. 2 most-trending topic in the United States on X late Friday morning with more than 90,000 posts, according to Trends24, a website that tracks trending topics.

By Friday afternoon, many of the posts shared Ms. Ellis’s video and emphasized that she was not involved in the crash.

Mr. Trump has made attacking diversity programs a key part of his administration, signing executive orders seeking to outlaw them and vowing to halt funding to government groups that support such programs.

In a recent incident, a Virginia pilot found herself falsely targeted after a Black Hawk helicopter crashed in a nearby area. The pilot, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been flying for over 20 years and has never been involved in any accidents or incidents.

Despite this, rumors began circulating that she was somehow responsible for the crash. The pilot was shocked and saddened to learn that people were spreading false information about her involvement in the tragic event.

After reaching out to local authorities and providing evidence of her whereabouts at the time of the crash, the pilot was finally able to clear her name. She is now speaking out about the importance of not jumping to conclusions and spreading misinformation.

“It’s heartbreaking to be wrongly accused of something so serious,” the pilot said. “I hope that this experience serves as a reminder to always seek the truth before making accusations against someone.”

The pilot is now focusing on moving forward and continuing to pursue her passion for flying. She hopes that this incident will serve as a learning opportunity for others to be more cautious and responsible with the information they share.
