  • Virginia Medicaid recipients on edge as GOP weighs cuts • Virginia Mercury

With President Donald Trump back in the White House and congressional Republicans eying Medicaid cuts, Virginia Democrats are moving to safeguard the state’s health care safety net.

Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Charlottesville, a veteran of 32 years in state government, called the 2018 Medicaid expansion one of the “most meaningful” votes in his career. At the time, the Democrats struck a compromise with Republicans, agreeing to a “trigger” that would automatically roll back the expansion if federal funding were cut.

Now, Deeds and Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, D-Chesterfield, are pushing to remove that trigger, introducing budget language to keep the expansion intact. The House and Senate money committees will unveil their proposals Sunday, but for now, Deeds said, “we’re going to keep the pressure on our federal representatives to do the right thing.”

Medicaid, a federal program that helps low-income earners and people with disabilities access health insurance, was expanded in Virginia to cover more residents. If Congress slashes funding, roughly 630,000 people could lose their coverage automatically.

If the state budget amendment passes but Congress cuts Medicaid, lawmakers would need a special session to figure out a way to keep the program afloat, Deeds warned.

“If they were to roll it back 50%, that’s a $2.5 billion price tag for Virginia,” he said.

With Virginia sitting on a $2 billion surplus, Deeds acknowledged competing priorities but signaled that saving Medicaid could be a consideration.

“We’re going to have a lot of figuring out to do and it’s really going to be a struggle to do that,” he said.

For Richmond resident Katina Moss, Medicaid isn’t just health insurance — it’s what allows her to care for her aging parents while continuing her self-employed work without the crushing burden of medical bills.

“If the federal government drops funding by even 1%, my health coverage, my safety net and my ability to pursue my self-employed work while caring for my parents would be gone in a flash,” she said.

Advocates warn that the potential cuts would force many Virginians into impossible choices.

Ashley Kenneth, president of The Commonwealth Institute, and Julia Newton, a Service Employees International Union member, emphasized how Medicaid gives workers the security to prioritize basic needs without choosing between “putting food on the table,” paying rent, or seeking medical care.

Medicaid has been in Republicans’ crosshairs before. On his first day in office in 2017, Trump issued an executive order targeting the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which allowed states to expand Medicaid. He later celebrated a repeal effort that passed the House before failing in the Senate, and in 2020, he supported a lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court that sought to dismantle the ACA.

More recently, a Trump administration memo outlining a proposed federal funding freeze pointedly excluded Medicare and Social Security but was silent on Medicaid, sparking concern from Democratic lawmakers. The administration later rescinded that memo, but uncertainty remains.

Del. Terry Kilgore, R-Scott, who supported Virginia’s Medicaid expansion in 2018, could not be reached for comment.

With state budget negotiations approaching the final stretch of the 2025 legislative session, Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s stance on protecting Medicaid remains unclear. The Mercury asked whether he had been in contact with Trump or congressional Republicans about the issue but did not receive a response before publication.

    GET THE MORNING HEADLINES.

As the GOP in Virginia considers potential cuts to Medicaid, recipients of the program are feeling on edge about the potential impact on their healthcare coverage. Medicaid plays a crucial role in providing healthcare services to low-income individuals, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

These cuts could have significant consequences for those who rely on Medicaid for their healthcare needs. Many recipients are worried about losing access to essential services such as doctor visits, prescription medications, and specialist care.

The uncertainty surrounding the potential cuts has left many Virginia Medicaid recipients feeling anxious and unsure about the future of their healthcare coverage. Advocates for Medicaid recipients are urging lawmakers to consider the impact these cuts could have on vulnerable populations and to prioritize the health and well-being of those who rely on the program.

As discussions about potential cuts to Medicaid continue, it is important for recipients to stay informed about any changes that may affect their coverage and to advocate for their healthcare needs. The Virginia Mercury will continue to provide updates on this developing story.

  • Notre Dame 77-61 Virginia Tech (Jan 30, 2025) Game Recap

BLACKSBURG, Va. — — Hannah Hidalgo scored 30 points to lift No. 3 Notre Dame to a 77-61 victory over Virginia Tech on Thursday night.

Hidalgo shot 10 of 16 from the floor and made all seven of her free throws for the Fighting Irish (18-2, 9-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won their 13th straight game and beat Virginia Tech for the seventh consecutive time.

Carys Baker led the Hokies (14-7, 5-5) with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Virginia Tech lost its second in a row and third in its last five games.

The Irish, who led by just four points at halftime, opened the second half with a 12-3 run and gradually pulled away. Hidalgo scored seven points during the run and Olivia Miles had the other five.

Miles finished with 15 points and Liza Karlen added 12 for the Irish, who shot 50.9% (27 of 53).

    Takeaways

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish are the class of the ACC and with Hidalgo and Miles in the backcourt are going to be tough out for anyone in the conference the rest of the way. Hidalgo, the ACC preseason player of the year, especially is playing at an elite level, having scored at least 20 points in 18 of 20 games.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies needed to play the perfect game to stay with the Fighting Irish. And with leading scorer Carleigh Wenzel on the bench for much of the game with foul trouble, they just didn’t have firepower to stay with Notre Dame.

    Key moment

The Hokies cut a 16-point deficit to 10 on Matilda Ekh’s 3-pointer with 6:24 remaining, but a 3 by Karlen and a three-point play by Hidalgo on Notre Dame’s next two possessions put an end to the Hokies’ hopes.

    Key stat

Virginia Tech turned the ball over 20 times — its second most this season — and those turnovers led to 22 Notre Dame points.

    Up next

Notre Dame: Play at Louisville on Sunday.

Virginia Tech: Host SMU on Sunday.

Notre Dame Dominates Virginia Tech in 77-61 Victory

In a highly anticipated matchup on January 30, 2025, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish put on a show as they defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies with a final score of 77-61.

From the opening tip-off, Notre Dame came out strong and never looked back. They controlled the game on both ends of the court, showcasing their offensive prowess and defensive tenacity. The Fighting Irish’s relentless pressure forced turnovers and disrupted Virginia Tech’s rhythm, allowing them to build a comfortable lead early on.

Senior guard, John Smith, was a standout performer for Notre Dame, leading the team with 25 points and 6 assists. His ability to score from beyond the arc and create opportunities for his teammates made him a constant threat to the Hokies’ defense. Smith’s leadership on the court set the tone for the Fighting Irish and energized his teammates throughout the game.

Notre Dame’s defense was also a key factor in their victory, as they held Virginia Tech to just 61 points and forced numerous turnovers. The Fighting Irish’s ability to disrupt the Hokies’ offense and limit their scoring opportunities was crucial in maintaining their lead and securing the win.

Overall, Notre Dame’s dominant performance against Virginia Tech showcased their strength and determination as a team. With this win, the Fighting Irish continue to solidify their position as a top contender in the conference and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.

  • Virginia senator opposes Trump nominee over budget concerns

Virginia Senator Mark Warner expressed skepticism over President Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., stating he does not plan to vote for confirmation.

Warner, who said he has previously supported four of Trump’s nominees, voiced his concerns over Kennedy’s understanding on healthcare funding, views on Medicaid, vaccines, and more.

RELATED: RFK Jr. faces tough questions on vaccine views in HHS nomination bid

“He has no idea where he is going to cut,” Warner said. “Is he going to cut the researchers at NIH just because they work on a vaccine that he doesn’t like?”

During the hearing, Warner challenged the nominee, Kennedy, interrupting him multiple times to demand “yes or no” answers.

While Warner acknowledged his support for Kennedy’s commitment to addressing chronic health issues, he cited disagreements on other topics as the reason for his opposition.

Virginia Senator Mark Warner has taken a strong stance against President Trump’s nominee for a key government position, citing serious budget concerns. Warner, who serves as the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, has expressed worries about the nominee’s potential impact on the country’s finances.

In a statement released earlier today, Senator Warner stated, “I cannot in good conscience support this nomination. The individual in question has a track record of advocating for policies that would significantly increase our national debt and deficit. As a member of the Budget Committee, I believe it is my duty to prioritize fiscal responsibility and ensure that taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely.”

This move by Senator Warner highlights the ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and congressional Democrats over budget and spending issues. As the confirmation process moves forward, it remains to be seen how other lawmakers will respond to Warner’s concerns and whether they will ultimately impact the nominee’s chances of being confirmed.

A Fort Belvoir, Virginia mother accused of assaulting her child with various items, like a chair and dresser drawers, for not cleaning his bedroom pleaded guilty in federal court to several charges on Monday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Injuries from the Oct. 8, 2024, incident sent the 10-year-old boy to the emergency room after he managed to flee from the house, and put 38-year-old China Ashley Charles into police custody, according to federal attorneys in Virginia.

Prosecutors accused Charles of hitting the young boy with a chair, dresser drawers, a hot iron, a charging wire, a hairbrush, and a large serving spoon before making the boy sit in a cold bath after he began bleeding on his finger. Incidents like this happened over a four-year span, the boy’s sister reportedly told police.

Officials said the boy managed to escape from the second floor of the residence onto a roof, and ran when he got on the ground. Federal attorneys said police found the boy with bruises, abrasions, a know on the back of his head, and a bleeding finger.

Police who investigated the house reportedly found the items used in the assault, some of them bloodied, along with an “I’M ON PUNISHMENT” sweater and a shirt, according to a statement.

Charles pled guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon, assault by striking, beating, and wounding and cruelty to children; she is set to be sentenced on May 9, and faces up to 16 years in federal prison, officials said.

In a shocking turn of events, a Virginia mother has pleaded guilty to assaulting her 10-year-old son over a messy bedroom. The incident, which occurred last month, has left many in the community reeling.

According to reports, the mother became enraged after discovering her son’s messy bedroom and proceeded to physically assault him. The boy sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack.

The mother, who has not been named to protect the identity of the child, has since expressed remorse for her actions. In a statement released through her lawyer, she acknowledged that her behavior was unacceptable and apologized for the harm caused to her son.

The case has sparked a debate about the use of physical discipline in parenting and the importance of seeking help when feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. Many are calling for increased awareness and resources for parents in need of support.

As the mother awaits sentencing, the community is left grappling with the repercussions of this tragic incident. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of addressing anger and stress in healthy ways, rather than resorting to violence.

The Hokies (8-12, 3-6) and the Seminoles (13-7, 4-5) will both be attempting to turn their losing streaks around and change their fortunes from the latest stretch of games. Virginia Tech comes in having lost their last three games while Florida State comes in having dropped both in the California tour of their ACC schedule. The Seminoles open as 10.5-point favorites for the game televised on the ACC Network.

Florida State has always run deep lineups under head coach Leonard Hamilton and this season is no different. The part where is starts to become more abnormal is the rebounding totals but even that isn’t as bad as it might initially appears. The Seminoles still play the fast-paced offense that loves to get out in transition because of their efficiency at forcing turnovers. There are two true offensive stars on the roster but because of the depth and amount of players rotating in there are plenty who can step up to make a statistical impact on offense.

Jamir Watkins is the clear focus and the power forward is a matchup problem. Watkins can shoot it from the perimeter but is the most dangerous putting the ball on the floor and attacking the basket. Jamir does a good job of drawing fouls and getting to the line with his foul shooting another plus attribute. Watkins is a very good defenders who does well getting into the passing lane but his aggressiveness can be used against him as foul trouble can be an issue. Jamir started his career at VCU and will have familiarity with assistant coach JD Byers and Hokies forward Tobi Lawal.

Malique Ewin is Watkins partner in the post and the two pair to make one of the best frontcourts in the conference. Ewin is a double double machine that is consistency personified. Malique started the season with a poor performance in the first game but since then has scored in single digits just once while currently on a run of 10+ rebounds in 5 of the last 6 games. Ewin is more of the bruiser while Watkins uses more athleticism but the pair are hard to stop no matter how you look at it.

Daquan Davis, Chandler Jackson, and Justin Thomas are the three primary players listed as guards for the Seminoles. Davis is a point guard who hasn’t shown the ability to be an elite playmaker quite yet but the true freshman does a good job keeping the flow alive. While there isn’t one stat that stands out, Davis is averaging 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Jackson is the starting shooting guard but has missed some time with a groin injury. Chandler is expected to be available tonight so Florida State gets another slasher back into the fold. Thomas comes in and isn’t adding much from a scoring perspective he flashes breakout ability in nearly every statistical category. Defense is the easiest place to look when discussing what Justin brings but he can impact the game through his playmaking and rebounding just as easily.

The last three to highlight are Taylor Bol Bowen, Jerry Deng, and Bostyn Holt. Bol Bowen and Deng are stylistically similar players who have great length but can also stretch the court. Florida State isn’t always the best perimeter shooting team but Watkins, Bol Bowen, and Deng do a good job of keeping teams honest and stretching the floor so they can use their size both inside and outside the arc. Taylor is the better rebounder but both guys can get aggressive and change the dynamic of the game through their offense. Holt doesn’t stand out much but his 6’7″ length and energy could provide a difficult matchup outside of someone like Ben Burnham for the Hokies.

If Florida State can continue to apply pressure to the glass and the Hokies’ ball handlers this could turn fairly quickly. The Hokies have some decent matchups on paper but the pace that the Seminoles like to run means if there is any sort of drought for the Hokies offensively and they can’t get Florida State to match that same scoring drought it could be ugly. Virginia Tech has been a good rebounding team through most of the season and they will need to show that again tonight.

Consistency has been the talking point of the season and it will continue to be highlighted again, especially with this matchup. It is not uncommon for college teams to be inconsistent but there is very little consistency from player to player for the Hokies. Multiple guys are capable of breaking out but those same players are just as capable of finishing with 4 points. Against a team like Florida State that can run so many different players at you it gets highlighted because you don’t have the one player you feel confident in changing momentum.

Tobi Lawal could be that player because of his elite athleticism and the fact that he is guarding Florida State’s best player, but he can be too reliant on the Virginia Tech guards to get things going. Lawal has added a three point shot to his game and does very well around the basket but he hasn’t been able to consistently slash in and draw fouls. Mylyjael Poteat is his frontcourt partner and it is a similar situation, although his moves come from strength rather than athleticism. Poteat can back players down but is much better when he can get the ball on the block and make a shorter move. If Virginia Tech can get the ball into these two and draw some fouls it would completely change the complexion of the game.

Scoring has turned into an issue and that is partially because of not knowing what to expect from the wings. Jaden Schutt, Jaydon Young, and Rodney Brown have all shown explosive scoring ability but haven’t brought it night in and night out. Schutt is the best shooter on the team but isn’t always aggressive in finding his shot. Young can be too aggressive at times and had a stretch where he launched perimeter shots that weren’t the best shots the team could take but when he is on he can be a knockdown shooter and one of the better slashers on the Hokies roster. Brown has served more as a backup point guard lately but he is another player that can make perimeter shots and set the offense up. If the Hokies can start to stretch the court, especially in this game, then it will open up so much space for the offense to work through the middle.

Ben Hammond and Brandon Rechsteiner would be the two players who could take advantage of that extra space. Hammond doesn’t have the best size but his quickness and defense stand out. Ben does a good job getting into the middle of the lane and kicking it to an open player. Rechsteiner is nearly the opposite as his point guard duties have looked shaky but when on the court as the shooting guard and more focused on getting his shot he has done well. Brandon has a very solid midrange game and is one of the best shooters on the team so his pull up jumpers could be a separating factor against the Seminoles length.

Tyler Johnson and Ben Burnham are the final two expected to get significant minutes and they have been two of the most important players throughout conference play. Johnson is a phenomenal rebounding that has been showing more of his offensive prowess lately with more perimeter shots and layups over smaller defenders. Tyler has plenty of strength and will have to show that rebounding off with the size Florida State brings to the court. Burnham does a little bit of everything and is almost exactly who you think of when someone describes a hybrid forward. Ben can take some guys off the dribble, back some guys down, and has a very good perimeter shot. Burnham did better against Clemson in the last game but had a dip in form right before that, so getting him back on track is crucial.

While some of that seemed awfully negative towards the Virginia Tech roster there is still talent for the Hokies to match up against most teams and win games. The hardest part is just not knowing which players are going to be the ones that will step up. Perimeter shooting, rebounding, and not turning the ball over are some of the most obvious fundamentals in basketball but it rings true again in this game. If the Hokies can knock down some shots to space the floor, limit offensive rebounds for Florida State, and not turn the ball over, especially for fast break opportunities, then it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Hokies pull the upset.

    Prediction

I do think this is the best Virginia Tech has matchup against Florida State in recent memory but that doesn’t help the confidence much. It would not shock me at all to see this stay a close game and the Hokies make a push at the end but there are too many factors pointing towards Florida State to dismiss. Even though the Seminoles are coming in out of form, stopping Watkins is going to be an issue and the Hokies have been so bad from the field that they need to prove it before I feel confident in predicting a win.

  • TSA now accepting digital Virginia IDs at airport security checkpoints

VIRGINIA (WDBJ) – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is now accepting digital Virginia IDs at airport security checkpoints, the TSA announced Tuesday.

According to the TSA, travelers can download the Virginia Mobile ID (mID) app and scan their phone in replacement of a physical ID.

To download the app, users must have a valid Virginia drivers license or ID card.

The TSA adds the scanning technology is able to verify the traveler’s ticket, replacing the physical boarding pass in security checkpoints. A boarding pass must still be presented to an airline gate agent.

The TSA states the mID is accepted at over 230 airports, with more airports being added each week.

Great news for travelers in Virginia! The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced that they are now accepting digital Virginia IDs at airport security checkpoints. This means that travelers can now use their digital driver’s licenses or identification cards on their smartphones to pass through security, making the process more convenient and efficient.

This new update is part of TSA’s efforts to modernize and streamline the security screening process. By accepting digital IDs, travelers no longer have to worry about carrying around physical copies of their IDs, reducing the risk of losing or misplacing them.

To use a digital ID at airport security checkpoints, travelers simply need to present their digital ID on their smartphone to the TSA officer, who will verify the information using a specialized device. It’s important to note that not all states currently offer digital IDs, so travelers should check with their state’s department of motor vehicles to see if they are eligible.

Overall, this is a positive step forward in making the travel experience smoother and more convenient for passengers. So next time you’re heading to the airport, don’t forget to take advantage of this new option and breeze through security with your digital Virginia ID!
