FIRST ON FOX: JD Vance is “fulfilling his promise” to American voters as he makes his first trip as vice president to Damascus, Virginia, on Monday to visit areas affected by Hurricane Helene in late September.

It will be Vance’s second trip to Damascus since the hurricane swept across the southeast on Sept. 27, destroying parts of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida and leaving more than 200 people dead.

“Vice President Vance visited with Damascus residents in October after the town was ravaged by Hurricane Helene,” a spokesperson for the vice president told Fox News Digital. “He pledged to be back, and now he’s fulfilling his promise. The first week of this administration has made it clear that President Trump and Vice President Vance keep their word.”

Vance’s trip comes just days after President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and other politicians visited Asheville, Fletcher and Swannanoa, North Carolina, on Jan. 24, marking the now-president’s second trip to those areas since September.

Trump spoke in all three towns but allowed a group of locals who lost everything in Helene to share their own personal stories during his stop in Swannanoa. Some locals have taken issue with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) handling of the disaster, saying it has too much red tape for those in need of immediate assistance to get the help they need, whether it be housing, money or both.

“I’ll also be signing an executive order to begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling FEMA or maybe getting rid of FEMA,” Trump told reporters in North Carolina on Friday morning. “I think, frankly, FEMA is not good.”

Trump also promised that his administration would step in and assist North Carolina to fix the damage quickly, vowing to “do a good job” for the state.

“We’re going to fix it, and we’re going to fix it as fast as you can,” Trump said. “It’s a massive amount of damage. FEMA has really let us down, let the country down. And I don’t know if that’s [former President Joe] Biden’s fault or whose fault it is, but we’re going to take over. We’re going to do a good job.”

Fox News’ Emma Colton contributed to this report.

JD Vance, the newly appointed vice president, will be visiting Virginia on Monday in his first official trip since taking office. Vance is set to meet with local leaders and community members to discuss his plans for the future of the country.

During his visit, Vance will address key issues facing Virginia, including economic development, education reform, and healthcare access. He will also take the time to listen to the concerns of residents and gather feedback on how the federal government can better support the state.

Vance’s visit comes at a crucial time for Virginia, as the state continues to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. His presence is sure to bring attention to the region and highlight the importance of strong leadership in times of crisis.

Stay tuned for updates on Vance’s visit to Virginia and follow along as he works to make a positive impact on the state and the country as a whole.

  • Wisconsin native who coached for Vikings gets DC job at Virginia Tech

Looking for a success story about a guy from the Upper Midwest who made it big in football coaching? There are plenty to choose from, but the newest name on the list is Sam Siefkes, who has reportedly been hired as the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech.

How did he reach this point in his career? For the Wisconsin native, it’s been a steady climb.

Siefkes was a standout athlete at Oconomowoc High School in the greater Milwaukee area, excelling in lacrosse. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science. He later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and began his coaching career.

From 2012 to 2014, Siefkes coached defensive backs, linebackers, and specialists at UW-La Crosse. He then spent the 2014 football season at Florida International University before becoming a graduate assistant defensive coach for the Wisconsin Badgers in 2015.

Siefkes continued to build his résumé, serving as the defensive coordinator at Division III Wisconsin-Platteville for two seasons. He then moved on to Wofford College, where he was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2018 to 2020.

In 2021, Siefkes joined the NFL, hired by the Minnesota Vikings under the Rick Spielman-Mike Zimmer regime as a defensive quality control coach. He remained with the team in 2022, serving as an assistant linebackers coach under head coach Kevin O’Connell.

When Jonathan Gannon was hired as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, he brought on 14 new assistants. At just 31 years old, Siefkes became the youngest among them, taking on the role of linebackers coach.

According to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, the Vikings “really didn’t want to lose him” to Arizona.

Now, fast-forward to the present day, and Siefkes is reportedly stepping into the defensive coordinator role at Virginia Tech.

“He brings NFL experience from two seasons with the Vikings as a quality control coach and assistant linebackers coach,” said college football insider Pete Thamel. “Along with his time at Wofford, he’s also coordinated defense at UW-Platteville.”

Thamel continued: “His time around one of the NFL’s most innovative and successful defenses in Arizona attracted Tech’s brass to him, and he also brings collegiate play-calling experience.”

Not a bad career path, wouldn’t you say?

Virginia Tech University has announced that Wisconsin native and former Minnesota Vikings coach, Mike Pettine, will be joining the Hokies football program as their new defensive coordinator.

Pettine, who has over 20 years of coaching experience in the NFL, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Virginia Tech defense. Known for his aggressive and innovative defensive schemes, Pettine is expected to make an immediate impact on the Hokies’ defense.

“We are thrilled to have Mike Pettine join our coaching staff,” said Virginia Tech head coach, Brent Pry. “His track record of success in the NFL speaks for itself, and we believe he will bring a new level of intensity and competitiveness to our defense.”

Pettine, a native of Doylestown, Wisconsin, is excited to return to his roots and help lead the Hokies to success in the ACC.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to coach at Virginia Tech,” said Pettine. “I have always had a deep respect for the tradition and history of the program, and I am eager to help build on that legacy.”

Fans of the Hokies can look forward to seeing Pettine’s aggressive defensive strategies in action next season as Virginia Tech looks to make a statement in the ACC.

  • Virginia Tech targeting Arizona Cardinals LB Coach Sam Siefkes as new defensive coordinator

In December, Virginia Tech Head Coach Brent Pry announced several staff changes, including the dismissal of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chris Marve. Marve was officially released from his duties on December 12, citing the on field results were not up to par.

“Our on-field results have not met our standards. As head coach, it is my responsibility to make the necessary changes to restore this program to its rightful place among college football’s best and deliver the success Hokie Nation deserves,” Pry said.

Along with Marve, Virginia Tech released offensive line coach Ron Crook and Strength and Conditioning Director Dwight Galt IV.

Crook was replaced by West Virginia’s Matt Moore, who was hired in late December, while Galt was replaced internally with the promotion of Jarrett Ferguson.

Today, it was reported by Pete Thamel that Virginia Tech is targeting the Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach Sam Siefkes to run the defense in 2025.

Siefkes has spent the past two seasons with the Cardinals and two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. His latest college football experience was at Wofford in 2020 where he was the defensive coordinator.  His final season at Wofford in 2020 was postponed due to COVID-19. In 2019, he led the nation’s 20th ranked defense that helped guide the program to its 3rd straight Southern Conference Championship and 4th straight appearance in the FCS Playoffs. The defense ranked 1st in the conference in total defense and rushing defense and 2nd in scoring defense.

In his first season at Wofford in 2018, the Terriers led the conference in total defense, scoring defense, passing defense, and rushing defense. Nationally, they ranked 8th in scoring defense and 12th in total defense. Wofford had a 9-4 overall record, won the Southern Conference Championship and advanced to the second round of the FCS Playoffs.

    Coaching Career

Arizona Cardinals – Linebackers Coach (2023 – Present)

Minnesota Vikings – Assistant Linebackers Coach (2022)

Minnesota Vikings – Defensive Quality Control Coach (2021)

    Wofford College – Defensive Coordinator/Inside Linebackers Coach (2018 – 2020)

    UW-Platteville – Defensive Coordinator (2016 – 2017)

University of Wisconsin – Graduate Assistant (2015)

Florida International University – Defensive Coach (2014)

    Wisconsin-La Crosse – Defensive Backs, Linebackers, and Specialists Coach (2012 – 2014)

Virginia Tech’s total defense ranking dropped to 58th nationally over the past season, compared to 20th in 2023.

Virginia Tech is setting its sights on Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach Sam Siefkes to become their new defensive coordinator. Siefkes has been instrumental in the development of the Cardinals’ linebacking corps and has a wealth of experience in coaching at both the college and professional levels.

With the Hokies looking to revamp their defense and return to their dominant ways, Siefkes could be the perfect fit to lead the charge. His knowledge of the game, passion for teaching, and proven track record of success make him a top candidate for the position.

Stay tuned for updates as Virginia Tech continues its pursuit of Sam Siefkes as their new defensive coordinator. #GoHokies #HokiesFootball #SamSiefkes

  • Can West Virginia Get Back on Track? Here’s What the ESPN BPI Says About WVU vs. K-St

Darian DeVries and the West Virginia Mountaineers look to get back on track on Saturday evening in the Little Apple as they square off with the Kansas State Wildcats.

According to the ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI) matchup predictor, West Virginia is the slight road favorite, with a 58.4% chance of winning the game. Kansas State has a 41.7% chance.

As we’ve noted several times before here, winning in this league is tough, but winning on the road is even harder. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing at Kansas or, in this case, one of the bottom feeders early on in Kansas State – every win in the Big 12 will be earned. 58% is a pretty fair number for the Mountaineers for that very reason.

The last two games for WVU have produced emotions of extreme elation and utter disappointment. Just days after knocking off No. 2 Iowa State on the day that they honored the legendary Jerry West, they fell flat against Arizona State, who entered the game five straight. Every time the Mountaineers have lost this season, they’ve bounced back the very next time out, having yet to drop two straight.

It’s been an extremely disappointing start to the season for the Wildcats, who, on paper, looked to be a dark horse contender in the league this season. They have a handful of “bad losses” in non-conference play but have really struggled since getting into their Big 12 slate. Since beating Cincinnati in the Big 12 opener, they’ve lost six straight, three of which came by double digits.

West Virginia University’s men’s basketball team has had a challenging season so far, with a record of 12-9. However, there is still hope for the Mountaineers to get back on track and make a push for the postseason.

According to the ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI), West Virginia has a strong chance of bouncing back in their upcoming game against Kansas State. The BPI gives the Mountaineers a 65% chance of defeating the Wildcats, who currently have a record of 11-12.

This matchup will be crucial for West Virginia as they look to improve their standing in the Big 12 conference and build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. With key players like Derek Culver and Taz Sherman leading the way, the Mountaineers have the talent and skill to come out on top in this important game.

Fans of West Virginia basketball will be eagerly watching as the team looks to prove the ESPN BPI right and secure a much-needed victory. Let’s hope the Mountaineers can get back on track and finish the season strong.

  • What goes into the decision to delay or close schools in Central Virginia?

RICHMOND, Va. — Winter weather has disrupted many Central Virginia schools’ schedules for a third week in a row.

Wednesday morning, many families woke up expecting delayed starts to the school day. But those delays would soon switch to school closings.

Richmond, Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield all updated families of the changes between 7 and 8:45 a.m.

Parents shared mixed reactions on the CBS 6 Facebook posts updating the public of the closures.

LaCienega Boulebardez wrote “This is causing us parents a delay in getting to work on time, they knew this was going to be the case last night, yet making sudden changes this morning is inconveniencing us even more”

Kaitlynn Mckoy shared she felt it was becoming ridiculous, “knowing children missed a whole week already of school you would think they would have prepared for future snowfall like today.”

Stephanie Mathena shared that she felt it was a smart call because she drove home Tuesday night and saw ice, while Bernitta Young applauded the districts prioritizing safety saying, “that’s why we choose people to be in charge so they can make those decisions, everyone will not agree all the time!”

Central Virginia school districts say closures come down to road conditions and the calls made by experts.

They determine if ice is on roads that would prohibit cars, buses and walkers from safely making it to school.

School leaders have to make overall decisions for many counties that spread hundreds of miles.

Richmond Superintendent Jason Kamras said their road assessments teams saw that narrow side streets especially on the Southside posed dangers Wednesday morning. They determined that conditions would not improve because temperatures were not rising above freezing.

He also said he had to consider that many staff from bus drivers, teachers and support staff called out because they live outside the city where conditions were even worse.

“This one was a very close call. Announcements made the morning of school are extremely difficult and I did not make this one lightly. I take full responsibility for it and deeply apologize for any inconvenience it caused our families,” wrote Kamras.

Henrico County posted pictures on their social media showing families pre-dawn road conditions. Their teams reported unsafe road conditions for bus travel and icy school parking lots in several eastern areas of the county.

In Chesterfield they found concerning conditions particularly in the southern part of the county. The division said they make their decisions working with law enforcement, VDOT and county officials.

“Careful consideration is taken when a decision is made to alter any aspect of our schedule. When that happens, we communicate with staff members and families as quickly as possible because we know even small changes to school schedules are disruptive. Unfortunately, weather forecasts are not necessarily 100% accurate — and weather can be unpredictable and change at inconvenient times,” wrote a spokesperson for the district.

Chesterfield schools said the additional day off won’t require them to change their calendar because their current schedule has more instructional hours what is required by Virginia.

Hanover reported dangerous road conditions in the far Eastern portion of the county. A district spokesperson wrote that they only want to close when they can be sure there is ice and snow impacting roadways.

That can be difficult because of the unpredictability of the weather and sometimes closure calls can’t be made until they check early morning road conditions in Hanover.

A Hanover spokesperson said the decisions are complex because the division covers over 400 square miles.

“One of the biggest considerations is the inter connectivity of many of our programs and transportation where students travel across the division from their home school to other schools, such as JROTC, Advance College Academies, The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology, and the Specialty Center at Hanover High School. For these and other reasons, we operate as one unified school division, and any delay or closure impacts all of our schools,” wrote a spokesperson.

The district has already made adjustments to the calendar based on closures earlier this month. They said the impact of Wednesday’s closure will be shared in the coming days.

Central Virginia is no stranger to unpredictable weather patterns, which can often lead to tough decisions regarding school closures or delays. So, what exactly goes into the decision-making process when it comes to determining whether schools should remain open or close their doors for the day?

First and foremost, the safety of students, staff, and faculty is the top priority. School officials closely monitor weather reports and road conditions to assess the potential risks of traveling to and from school. Factors such as snow accumulation, icy roads, and extreme temperatures all play a role in determining whether it is safe for schools to operate as usual.

Another key consideration is the ability of school buses to safely transport students to school. If road conditions are deemed too hazardous for buses to navigate, officials may opt to delay or cancel school altogether.

Additionally, the impact of a school closure on the community as a whole is taken into account. Parents and caregivers rely on schools to provide a safe environment for their children while they are at work, so officials must weigh the potential disruption to families when making their decision.

Ultimately, the decision to delay or close schools in Central Virginia is a complex one that takes into consideration a variety of factors. By prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and staff, school officials strive to make the best choice possible in challenging weather conditions.

  • Cold weather causes 71 school buses to not start in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Officials from Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) said 71 buses had mechanical issues and some would not start Tuesday morning due to various mechanical issues. Officials said they also received double the number of bus driver callouts on a normal day.

FORECAST: Bitter cold, with snow Tuesday night

It was bitterly cold early Tuesday morning. Air temperatures were in the teens and lower to mid-20s this morning. Wind chills dipped into the 5-15° in many locations across the region.

“Today we had 35 drivers who called out sick at 5 a.m. All together we had 75 drivers out,” explained school officials.

They also said the buses had frozen doors, air leaks, and other issues. Four service trucks responded to the issues as soon as possible.

VBCPS did not say how many students were late getting to school as a result of the school bus issues.

Virginia Beach, VA – The recent cold snap has caused some major issues for the school transportation system in Virginia Beach. According to reports, 71 school buses failed to start this morning due to the frigid temperatures.

The school district has been working tirelessly to get the buses up and running, but the cold weather has posed a significant challenge. As a result, some students may experience delays in getting to school on time.

Parents are advised to check the school district’s website or social media channels for updates on bus delays and alternative transportation options. The safety and well-being of students are the district’s top priority, and they are doing everything they can to address the issue promptly.

In the meantime, students are encouraged to dress warmly and be prepared for potential delays in their morning commute. Let’s hope for a quick resolution to this cold weather-related problem so that students can get to school safely and on time. Stay warm, Virginia Beach!
