Morrisey talked about each of the appointments during his new conference Thursday, including his pick for chief of staff, McCaffery.

“I think he’s a home run get for the state of West Virginia,” Morrisey said during his news conference. “I can’t imagine having someone with that kind of experience. He’s going to help the citizens of our state tremendously.”

The incoming governor said he’s been in contact with Senate president-elect Randy Smith about the cabinet position appointments, as they are subject to approval by the legislative body.

“I’m really enjoying the working relationship with Sen. Smith. I think he’s going to do a terrific job. I’ve certainly been talking with the speaker as well. I anticipate a good, close working relationship,” Morrisey said. “We have a lot of work to do in the upcoming months. It’s a thrilling time in West Virginia. I’m ready to make sure that everyone knows our team is second to none. That’s how we did really well in the AG’s office.”

Morrisey said more transition announcements, including more cabinet appointments, will be made in the days and weeks ahead.

  • Three things to watch in Minnesota’s bowl game against Virginia Tech

Three things to watch in Minnesota’s bowl game against Virginia Tech

The Gophers will cap off their 2024-25 season in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl this Friday against Virginia Tech. With so many opt-outs, transfers and coaching changes, both teams will look a little different than when we saw them play last in November, but there’s still a lot you can learn about both programs.

The Gophers have not had nearly as many opt-outs and transfers as Virginia Tech, but their offensive line will look a little different. Phillip Daniels started the final four games of the season at right tackle, but he has since transferred to Ohio State and longtime starting left tackle Aireontae Ersery has declared for the NFL Draft and we will likely not see him play on Friday. It gives Minnesota a chance to get some more young players an opportunity.

After starting all 12 regular season games at center Greg Johnson should be there again in this game. Outside of that, there are a lot of different ways Brian Callahan and the offensive line could go. Quinn Carroll will play, but he’s seen time at right tackle, right guard and left tackle in 2024. Veteran Tyler Cooper has played 590 snaps at left guard this season and Ashton Beers as seen time at both right and left guard this season.

I am confident that the interior will be Cooper at left guard, Johnson at center and Beers at right guard. Left tackle is the interesting spot because Carroll has the most experience there on the entire roster with only 66 snaps in the Wisconsin game. Based on past bowl games, I think P.J. Fleck and his staff will take the approach of getting young guys like Nathan Roy and Tony Nelson some experience and we might see a lot of different combinations with veterans Martes Lewis and Aluma Nkele also in the mix.

In last year’s Quick Lane Bowl, Darius Taylor had 37 total touches. Heading into the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Minnesota’s No. 3 and No. 4 running backs Jordan Nubin and Sieh Bangura have hit the transfer portal, while No. 2 back Marcus Major has declared for the NFL Draft.

Major did not officially say whether or not he’s playing in the bowl game, but I think we could see an increased role for true freshman Fame Ijeboi in this game. I fully expect Taylor to receive the bulk of the carries, but we could see 3 to 5 touches for Ijeboi if not more depending on the status of Major. Minnesota added A.J. Turner and Cameron Davis from the transfer portal for 2025, but this could be Ijeboi’s chance to prove he deserves a bigger role.

Fleck and his staff have consistently used bowl games as opportunities for young players to get some more playing time as an audition for the next season. Notably, Coleman Bryson won the Pinstripe Bowl Defensive MVP in 2022 as a true freshman and other defensive players routinely get increased opportunities.

The main position group I will be looking at in this game is cornerback. I don’t expect Virginia Tech to throw the ball a whole lot, but the Gophers will likely be without longtime starter Justin Walley, who has declared for the NFL Draft. It sounds like Ethan Robinson and Za’Quan Bryan will likely be the No. 1 and No. 2 options at the outside positions, but Friday could be an opportunity for young players like Rhyland Kelly and Mike Gerald to show the staff what they have for 2025.

Minnesota added NC Central transfer Jaylen Bowden, but there are still a lot of questions behind him and Bryan. Friday could be a big opportunity for Kelly and Gerald to prove themselves to the staff.

    1. Minnesota’s rushing attack: The Gophers have one of the most potent rushing attacks in the nation, led by star running back Mohamed Ibrahim. Watch for Minnesota to establish the run early and often against Virginia Tech’s defense.
    2. Virginia Tech’s passing game: The Hokies have a dynamic passing attack led by quarterback Braxton Burmeister. Keep an eye on how Minnesota’s secondary matches up against Virginia Tech’s talented group of receivers.
    3. Turnover battle: Both teams have been turnover-prone at times this season, so winning the turnover battle could be crucial in determining the outcome of the game. Watch for which team is able to capitalize on turnovers and create scoring opportunities.

  • What happened to Virginia Tech’s roster entering clash vs. Gophers?

What happened to Virginia Tech’s roster entering clash vs. Gophers?

It’s been nearly five weeks since Virginia Tech’s football team ended its regular season with a 37-17 victory over archrival Virginia. When the Hokies return to action Friday night against the Gophers in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Damien Sordelett will see an entirely new version of the team he covers for the Roanoke (Va.) Times.

When asked by a Minnesota reporter about a list of those missing, Sordelett quipped, “Do you want all of them, or just the scholarship players?”

    It’s a substantial list.

Since the season ended, the Hokies have had 21 players enter the transfer portal and five leave early to prepare for the NFL draft or accept Senior Bowl invitations. On offense, Sordelett expects them to be missing leading rusher Bhayshul Tuten (1,159 yards, 15 TDs), two starting linemen and a key reserve, and their second-leading wide receiver. On defense, Virginia Tech will be without two third-team All-American performers in edge rusher Antwaun Powell-Ryland and tackle Aeneas Pebbles, three starters in the secondary and a depth player along the line and at linebacker.

Not surprisingly, the Hokies are 7½-point underdogs to the Gophers after opening as 4½-point dogs.

Sordelett covered a handful of subjects regarding the Hokies:

Kyron Drones started nine games, passing for 1,562 yards and 10 TDs and rushing for 336 yards and six TDs, but the redshirt junior missed time late in the season because of knee, ankle and turf toe injuries. Coach Brent Pry hasn’t ruled him out, but Sordelett expects either redshirt freshman William “Pop” Watson III or senior Collin Schlee to start. “He’s tried to gut it out,” Sordelett said of Drones, “but he just couldn’t go.”

Watson started the 31-28 loss to Duke and the finale against Virginia, going a combined 26-for-46 for 254 yards and a touchdown with an interception. He also rushed for 48 yards and a TD against Virginia.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are gearing up to face off against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in an exciting clash, but fans may be wondering what happened to their roster leading up to the big game.

Injuries have unfortunately plagued the Hokies, with key players such as star quarterback Braxton Burmeister and top receiver Tre Turner both sidelined. This has forced the team to rely on backup players to step up and fill in the gaps.

Additionally, there have been some unexpected departures from the team, including defensive standout Amare Barno who recently declared for the NFL draft. This has put even more pressure on the remaining players to perform at their best.

Despite these challenges, the Hokies are determined to put up a strong fight against the Golden Gophers and come out on top. Fans can expect to see a resilient and determined team take the field, ready to give it their all in this crucial matchup. Stay tuned to see how Virginia Tech’s roster adapts and rises to the occasion in this exciting clash.

The postseason storylines continue to roll in the Hokies’ latest trip to North Carolina. Tech’s upcoming matchup will be its third appearance in the Charlotte-hosted postseason contest. The first two appearances occurred under different naming rights, with the inaugural matchup resulting in a 35-24 victory over Arkansas in 2016. Now, in their first trip under the current naming rights sponsor, Duke’s Mayo, the Hokies will aim to earn a 2-1 record in the bowl. Not to mention, a staff member from the winning team will get doused in mayonnaise to cement the moment of victory. Dive deeper into the program’s history with Bowl Snapshot, presented by Kroger.

    Defensive Preparation
Following staff changes after the 2024 regular season, Tech’s defensive play calling will look different. Addressing the media after the decision, Pry mentioned that he and STARs coach Shawn Quinn will handle bowl game preparation for the defense. “And we’ll decide as we get closer to it where the play calling actually comes from,” Pry stated. With weeks of game planning, the Hokies can lean on the valuable coaching experience of Quinn if needed.

Virginia Tech vs. No. 4 Duke Live Updates

Tip-off is getting closer and closer for today’s matchup between Virginia Tech and No. 4 Duke. It has been a dismal start to the season for the Hokies, but they have a massive opportunity against the top team in the conference.

Tech and Duke are set to meet for the 67th time when the two square off on New Year’s Eve in Durham, N.C. The Hokies trail in the all-time series, 53-13.

Tech won the 2022 ACC championship game, 82-67, over the No. 7-ranked Blue Devils in Brooklyn, N.Y. Hunter Cattoor erupted for a career-high 31 points in that championship game en route to MVP honors of the tournament. Tech has only won once 1-25) at Cameron Indoor Stadium, a 69-67 decision in overtime on Jan. 6, 2007.

This will be the 37th time Tech will face a nationally ranked-Duke squad, including the 20th time the Blue Devils are ranked inside the top five. Jaden Schutt, a Duke transfer, returns to Cameron Indoor for the first time since making the move to Blacksburg. Schutt played in 14 games for the Blue Devils during the 2022-23 season before redshirting in 2023-24.

Despite the Hokies being 0-4 away from Cassell Coliseum this season, each of those contests have been at neutral sites. Tuesday at No. 4 Duke will be Tech’s first true road game of the season. VT is 4-20 in true road games over the past two seasons.

According to Fanduel Sportsbook, Virginia Tech is a 24.5-point underdog vs the Blue Devils today and the total is set at 135.5.

  • Next Up – Virginia Tech. Will Duke Shut Down Schutt?

Next Up – Virginia Tech. Will Duke Shut Down Schutt?

Date 12/31 || Time 4:30 || Venue Cameron Indoor Stadium || Video ACCN

Next up for Duke is 5-7 Virginia Tech in a rare weekday afternoon game on New Year’s Eve.

The obvious headline here is the return of Jaden Schutt to Cameron. The former Blue Devil transferred to Virginia Tech after last season. He would have been down the depth chart regardless, but injuries forced him to redshirt and then, like most of the team, he left.

He’s done reasonably well in Blacksburg. He’s starting and leading the team in minutes played with 28.8 per game. He’s averaging nearly double figures (9.3) in points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He’s not shooting particularly well – 37.5 percent on threes and 36.8 overall – but clearly he’s valuable to the team.

Schutt has taken 96 shots total and of those, 76 were three point attempts which makes sense in Mike Young’s three-point happy offense.

His backcourt mate is Brandon Rechsteiner, scion of an athletic family though he took a very different route there. His father and uncle are both professional wrestlers and his brother, Brock, is apparently heading that way as well.

He’s not shooting particularly well – 33.3 percent overall and 22.2 percent for threes – but his primary role is to run the offense and he’s doing okay there with 5 apg.

Toby Lawal, a 6-8 transfer from VCU, is getting 10.7 ppg and 5.8 rpg.

Sophomore Jaydon Young (6-4) is also starting. He’s putting up 7.1 ppg.

Mylyjael Poteat, a candidate for the All-Name team, is 6-9 and a bruising 260. He’s averaging 10.1 ppg, 4.4 boards and hitting 51.4 percent of his shots.

Tyler Johnson, Ben Burnham, Ben Hammond, Rodney Brown and Patrick Wessler make up the rest of the rotation.

Since the Hokies joined the ACC, they’ve periodically given Duke fits. Remember the Sean Dockery game? That was great because Coleman Collins was taunting Duke when the Hokies looked like they had the game won only to see Dockery hit a near-half court shot to steal the win from Virginia Tech (Collins then begged the referees to overturn the shot).

In their first visit to Cameron, the fiery Seth Greenberg left angry, partly because he got jostled by the Cameron Crazies on the way out after losing.

The real trouble has come in Blacksburg, where the Hokies have given Duke fits. But this one isn’t in Blacksburg.

As it has every game this season, Duke has a major size advantage and will try to dominate the smaller Hokies inside.

Virginia Tech has a key to Duke’s system in Schutt, who knows the ins-and-outs of what Jon Scheyer will want to do. That’s a valuable asset when you think about it.

Our guess is that he comes back to Duke ready to prove a point and he may indeed go off.

However, consider this too: Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster know Schutt very, very well. They know when he’ll go left, when he’ll pull up and what makes him balk. That, too, is a very valuable asset. Sion James, Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel can all take a turn on Schutt or whoever the hot hand turns out to be.

Our sense of this rivalry usually is that it’s going to be Young’s three point offense vs. Duke’s very tough defense. This year feels a bit different though. Duke’s size and outstanding defense has been smothering opponents. Khaman Maluach, Cooper Flagg and Maliq Brown make it very difficult to do much inside and Duke’s pressure can extend out farther than most teams.

If the Hokies – Schutt or otherwise – get hot from three point range, well, that’s the wild card. It happens.

If it comes down to a more defensively oriented game, then Duke is in the driver’s seat.

As Duke prepares to take on Virginia Tech in their next matchup, all eyes are on the Hokies’ star player, quarterback Schutt. With a strong arm and impressive stats, Schutt has been a key player for Virginia Tech this season.

But will Duke be able to shut him down?

The Blue Devils’ defense has been solid this season, with strong performances against some tough opponents. They will need to bring their A-game against Schutt and the Hokies’ offense.

It will be a tough challenge, but Duke has the talent and determination to come out on top. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting matchup as Duke looks to shut down Schutt and secure a win against Virginia Tech. Let’s go Blue Devils! #DukeFootball #NextUp #BeatVirginiaTech
