UK students gearing up for Wildcats vs. Volunteers game
LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Tennessee is always a big game for Kentucky fans, but this year, there’s another must-win for BBN when John Calipari returns to Rupp Arena with his Arkansas Razorbacks.
LEX 18 has been asking viewers to weigh in: If you could only choose one, would you rather see UK beat the Volunteers or the Hogs?
LEX 18’s Lauren Minor went to the University of Kentucky’s campus to ask students the same question.
The message across campus was simple. “I think I will never wear that orange in my life and I love the cats,” says Freshman Celia Monte.
UK students are gearing up for Tuesday night’s tip-off, with a two-game losing streak fresh on the minds of players and fans.
“I am a little bit nervous, ” says Freshman Madeline Logston. “Tennessee is pretty good, but I do think we are going to pull out a win.”
“Tennessee is a big rival,” adds Monte. “So this is going to be a really big game and I am hoping we can come back from our loss from last week.”
Coming down the pipe this week is Arkansas, with a familiar face walking into Rupp Arena as a Razorback.
“Our old coach, Coach Calapari, coaches at Arkansas now and I would just love to see him get beat,” says Logston.
“I think we are going to beat Arkansas pretty easily,” says student Jack Wagoner. “I think Tennessee, we are going to want that one. So this is a big one no matter what.”
Tickets for Saturday’s game against the Razorback’s won’t be easy to come by. At last check, the cheapest tickets on Stub Hub were just over $200 in the upper level. The most expensive? Two floor seats behind the bench, going for just under $5,000.
Some students are going in with high expectations.
“I mean we are a hot team this year,” says Junior Myles Von Drasek. “I love Mark Pope coming in and turning the program around. Cats by 90 tonight.”
Others are realistic but confident.
“Our whole season so far has been beating ranked teams,” says Wagoner. “I think we win both games, but I am excited for Arkansas to see Calipari come back.”

We’ve got another exciting SEC matchup on schedule as the Tennessee Volunteers and the Miss. State Bulldogs are set to tip at 7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Volunteers will be looking to keep their ten-game home win streak alive.
The experts predicted Tennessee would be headed in after a win, but Vanderbilt made sure that didn’t happen. Tennessee was just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 76-75 to Vanderbilt.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Felix Okpara, who made all 7 shots he took racking up 16 points plus four blocks. He has been hot recently, having posted three or more blocks the last four times he’s played. Zakai Zeigler was another key player, dropping a double-double on 16 points and ten assists.
Meanwhile, it may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Miss. State ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They skirted past Ole Miss 84-81. For those keeping track at home, that’s the closest victory the Bulldogs have posted since December 14, 2024.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Miss. State to victory, but perhaps none more so than Riley Kugel, who went 6 for 11 en route to 21 points plus two steals. Another player making a difference was KeShawn Murphy, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Miss. State smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in four consecutive games.
Tennessee’s defeat dropped their record down to 16-2. As for Miss. State, their win bumped their record up to 15-3.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Tennessee has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 38.6 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like Miss. State struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 39.7. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.
Looking forward, Tennessee is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 6.5 points. For those looking to play the spread, take note: they are a solid 7-3 against the spread when playing at home.

As the clock ticks down to Rose Parade on New Year’s morning, volunteers are busy putting the finishing touches on the floats that will glide down the streets of Pasadena.
PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) — As the clock ticks down to Rose Parade on New Year’s morning, volunteers are busy putting the finishing touches on the floats that will glide down the streets of Pasadena.
Hundreds of volunteers are needed each day to pull off the feat of meticulously placing flowers, seeds and other natural materials that make up the floats.
If you’re not heading out to the parade in Pasadena, you can check out the floats and festivities from home. Watch the Rose Parade Wednesday at 8 a.m. on ABC7.

Russia: Black Sea oil spill volunteers call on Putin for more help

Volunteers helping to clean up the oil spill on Russia’s Black Sea coast are appealing to Russian President Vladimir Putin for more assistance, as they grapple with environmental havoc across more than 35 miles of coastline.
Two Russian tankers carrying thousands of tons of fuel were badly damaged in stormy weather near the Black Sea earlier this month, leading to an oil spill, according to Russian state media. The tankers were carrying more than 9,000 tons of oil, according to TASS, much of which spilled into the Kerch Strait between mainland Russia and annexed Crimea.
Putin last week labelled the spill an “environmental disaster.”
At least 3,700 tons of heavy oil were spilled, though the actual volume may be higher, according to Greenpeace Ukraine. Video from the scene showed blackened waves washing the heavy fuel oil known as mazut onto rocky shores. In one video, a bird – its wings thick with oil – could be seen squawking in distress as it was pummeled by waves, unable to lift its wings and fly away.
In a video message addressed to the Russian president and prime minister on Tuesday, volunteers said that local authorities in Russia’s Krasnodar region did not have the means to clean up the oil spill.
“Local authorities are not coping, they do not have the resources for this. The only resource is ordinary people with shovels, such a catastrophe cannot be defeated with shovels!” one volunteer said in the video, as they requested federal resources and specialists to be sent to the area. They also appealed for foreign specialists to be sent, warning that the scale of the pollution will have an international impact.
“It was recently announced that 5,000 volunteers and rescuers are working to eliminate the consequences. We believe that in such a vast disaster area, even 50,000 people with shovels are not able to solve the problem and save the situation,” the volunteer added.
On Thursday, Putin suggested the captains of the vessels were to blame for the incident. “Why am I saying that this is a big disaster and a catastrophe? Because almost 40% of the fuel has leaked,” he said, adding that efforts to recover the vessels were hampered by the ongoing storm.
Russia’s Investigative Committee will open a criminal case into the incident, Russian state media TASS reported.
