  • Utah Hockey Club replaces Wasatch for Outlaws in fan name vote

One day after announcing three finalists for their permanent nickname, the Utah Hockey Club has replaced one of them.

Wasatch, named for the Wasatch mountain range in Utah, has been swapped out with Outlaws, the team announced on Thursday. It will join Hockey Club and Mammoth, which made the final four after an initial fan vote last year, as the three options fans will be able to vote on during the team’s current four-game homestand.

“We listened to your feedback and dug into all the Qualtrics data from last night’s survey,” the team said in a statement Thursday. “For the team name, it’s clear that Outlaws should be in the mix instead of Wasatch, so we’re swapping it out.”

Yeti had been a favorite option and was part of the voting process since the beginning, but a trademark issue caused the team to drop it from consideration.

Mike Maughan, an executive of the team’s parent company Smith Entertainment Group, confirmed to reporters this week that the team would pivot to a different selection of possible names after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected the Yeti name and logo it submitted for approval.

The USPTO specifically cited a “likelihood of confusion” for consumers due to other companies and brands with a similar name, most notably the Yeti Cooler Company. Different companies can feature a similar name if they’re in clearly different fields (e.g. the Beatles’ Apple Corps and Apple Computers), but it seems likely an NHL team with the same name would clash with certain products, such as the cooler company’s apparel line.

Maughan said the team is confident that the winner of the fan vote will clear the patent and trademark process.

The team is planning to have a permanent name and home and away jerseys in place in time for the start of the 2025-26 NHL season.

The Utah Hockey Club, formerly known as the Wasatch Outlaws, recently held a fan vote to determine a new name for the team. After receiving numerous suggestions and conducting a thorough review, the team announced that they will now be known as the Utah Outlaws.

The decision to change the team name was made in an effort to better represent the state of Utah and its passionate hockey fanbase. The Utah Outlaws will continue to bring high-energy, competitive hockey to the ice, and fans can expect the same level of excitement and dedication from the team as they have come to know and love.

We are thrilled to introduce the Utah Outlaws as the new name for our beloved hockey team and look forward to the continued support from our amazing fans. Thank you to everyone who participated in the fan vote and helped us choose a new name that truly represents the spirit of Utah hockey. Go Outlaws! #UtahOutlaws #HockeyClub #FanVote

  • Dems Worry Sen. Whitehouse Considering Vote for RFK Jr

Wanted to share some information on the RFK Jr. nomination before the Senate.

It probably won’t surprise you that RFK Jr., along with Tulsi Gabbard, are among the few Trump nominees who might actually not get confirmed. But I’m told that one senator who Democratic senators and health care advocates have real concerns about is none other than Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). To be clear, Whitehouse isn’t confirmed as voting for Kennedy. But he appears to be actively considering it. (Ed Note: WTF?)

Why? I’m told that there appear to be two reasons: One is that Whitehouse and Kennedy are personal friends. They were law school roommates at UVA and that seems to have been the beginning of a lifelong friendship. There are also specific issues with Rhode Island’s health care system that apparently need regulatory flexibility from HHS. That seems to be a real issue. But it hasn’t been enough of an issue to shift the state’s senior senator, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), who remains firmly opposed to Kennedy’s nomination.

Whitehouse isn’t the only Democratic senator not firmly locked down. There are also concerns about John Fetterman (D-PA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT). But observers seem fairly confident that both will oppose Kennedy.

    Whitehouse is the question mark.

Here’s why Whitehouse’s possible vote to confirm Kennedy would be of more than just symbolic importance. There’s potential Republican opposition to Kennedy both for his advocacy in favor of polio, measles and other childhood diseases but also because, at least until a few weeks ago, he was pro-choice. But the first is the real problem. Dyed-in-the-wool anti-abortion advocates like Josh Hawley (R-MO) have giving Kennedy their blessing. It’s polio and measles, stupid, to paraphrase a younger James Carville.

Vote counters opposing Kennedy’s nomination believe there is a handful of Republicans seriously considering opposing Kennedy. But they’re unlikely to do so if one or more Democrats themselves vote to confirm him.

In other news, Rhode Island just reported its first case of measles since 2013.

Requests for comment from Whitehouse’s office went unanswered by time of publication.

As rumors swirl about Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse potentially considering a vote for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in an upcoming election, many Democrats are expressing concern and dismay. Kennedy, a controversial figure known for his anti-vaccine views and skepticism of mainstream science, has sparked debate and division within the party.

Sen. Whitehouse, a longtime advocate for environmental issues and progressive causes, has typically aligned with the Democratic Party on key issues. However, his potential support for Kennedy has raised eyebrows and prompted questions about his judgment and values.

Many Democrats fear that a vote for Kennedy could undermine the party’s credibility and send the wrong message to voters. Some are urging Sen. Whitehouse to reconsider his position and uphold the principles of science, reason, and public health.

As the speculation continues, the future of Sen. Whitehouse’s stance on RFK Jr. remains uncertain. Only time will tell how this potential decision will impact his reputation and standing within the party.

  • Utah Hockey Club sets fan vote on three name options

The Utah Hockey Club is going another route with another fan survey after a popular choice for a permanent nickname was ruled out.

Utah Yeti was one of the final six choices in the initial fan vote for the NHL’s newest team, but KSL and The Athletic reported last week that a trademark bid was rejected. Smith Entertainment Group, which owns the team, said it’s no longer pursuing that nickname.

“An SEG executive shared that it explored every avenue to make Yeti work but that YETI Coolers, LLC was ultimately unwilling to agree to a co-existence agreement,” the team said in a statement.

Instead, fans attending the next four home games, starting Wednesday night, will vote on three choices:

    • Utah Hockey Club
    • Utah Mammoth
    • Utah Wasatch

The Utah Hockey Club is giving fans the opportunity to help choose the team’s new name! After a rebranding effort, the club has narrowed down the options to three choices:

    1. Utah Grizzlies
    2. Salt Lake City Storm
    3. Rocky Mountain Renegades

Fans can cast their vote on the team’s website or social media channels. The winning name will be announced at the season opener, so be sure to show your support and help shape the future of Utah hockey! #UtahHockeyClub #FanVote #NewName

  • Utah Hockey Club to hold in-arena fan vote for permanent name

Utah Hockey Club will not be moving forward with “Yeti” or “Yetis” as its team nickname and will hold an in-arena fan vote to pick a new one.

The team expects to announce a permanent name and identity before the 2025-26 NHL season. The new fan vote comes after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected names and logos that Utah Hockey Club had submitted for approval, in particular “Utah Yetis,” which was widely assumed to be the franchise’s eventual nickname.

Fans attending Utah’s next four home games will have the opportunity to vote for three options using tablets stationed around Delta Center. The team estimates that could be upward of 15,000 fans per game.

    The name options are:

Utah Hockey Club. The team’s current name was meant as a placeholder for its inaugural season in Salt Lake City, after Smith Entertainment Group purchased the Arizona Coyotes franchise. “It has always been our intention to let our season one identity as Utah Hockey Club, the team’s performance and the amazing response from our fans hold the conversation through our inaugural season,” said Chris Armstrong, the team’s president of hockey operations.

Utah Mammoth. This nickname was one of six finalists from a fan vote held last year, along with Utah Blizzard, Utah Hockey Club, Utah Outlaws, Utah Venom and Utah Yeti. Team owner Ryan Smith later revealed on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” that Mammoth had made the final four options.

Utah Wasatch. This is an entirely new option for Utah’s team name, as it wasn’t included in the initial 20 names presented to fans in a survey. It references Utah’s Wasatch mountain range, known for its many ski resorts. But the team acknowledges that it’s basically a replacement for Utah Yeti. The name will allow the team to use a “mythical snow creature in the form of a Yeti” as its mascot, according to Mike Maughan of Smith Entertainment Group.

The fans will vote on these three names and two logos: One for the Utah Mammoth and one that would be used for either the Utah Hockey Club or the Utah Wasatch that features the Yeti-like creature, which Maughan said is known as the “mountain defender” logo internally.

This might not be the last fan vote, according to Maughan, who said there could be another round after this one. But he reiterated that whatever the fans decide in these votes will be the name of the Utah team beginning next season.

Maughan said the team submitted all 20 names on its initial survey to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. But the biggest refusal was for “Yeti” or “Yetis.” It was widely expected, even among Utah players, that “Yeti” or “Yetis” would eventually win out as the team name.

The USPTO rejected a trademark application from the team for “Utah Yetis” because of the “likelihood of confusion” for consumers to other companies and brands that use the name. Utah Hockey Club was seeking to use “Utah Yetis” on a variety of clothing items. The USPTO said a database search turned up “a number of third-party marks registered for use in connection with the same or similar goods and/or services as those of both applicant and registrant in this case.”

Among those parties was Yeti Coolers LLC, which makes drinkware, coolers and clothing.

“We engaged deeply with Yeti Cooler Company and worked with them over a process to see if there was some coexistence agreement that we could engage with them on,” said Maughan. “They have a unique and strong trademark on anything published Yeti or Yetis. We did not have a coexistence agreement with Yeti and therefore have decided to move on from that name.”

Maughan said the team anticipated trademark hurdles for “Yeti” and other names — including Utah Hockey Club, which also was rejected but faces less of a barrier to future approval — and thus anticipated the need to pivot. He said the team is confident the three names in the fan vote should clear the USPTO process.

“We have an incredible team, and we are very confident we have a clear path to each of those names,” he said. “We have strategies to approach each of them and feel that we’re on very solid ground as we continue forward.”

Fan voting on the new name will begin during Tuesday night’s game against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.

Utah Hockey Club is in its first season playing in Salt Lake City. The Arizona Coyotes franchise was sold to Utah Jazz owners Smith Entertainment Group in April 2024. SEG acquired the franchise, its players and its hockey operations department in the sale, although the team is considered a new franchise rather than an extension of the Coyotes’ legacy.

The Utah Hockey Club is giving fans the opportunity to have a say in the team’s permanent name!

In a unique and interactive move, the team will be holding an in-arena fan vote during their upcoming home games to determine the official name that will represent the club moving forward. Fans will have the chance to choose from a selection of potential names, each with its own unique identity and meaning.

This exciting initiative not only allows fans to feel more connected to the team, but it also showcases the club’s commitment to engaging with and valuing the input of their loyal supporters.

So, make sure to come out to the games and cast your vote for the name that you believe best represents the Utah Hockey Club. Let’s come together as a community to create a lasting identity for our beloved team!

  • VOTE: Should the Yankees re-sign these two key relievers?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across Major League Baseball. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in New York Yankees fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The 2024-25 offseason for the New York Yankees has been busy. Due to the loss of Juan Soto to the crosstown New York Mets, general manager Brian Cashman has had to find ways to, as the famous quote from Moneyball goes, “recreate him in the aggregate.” Most of that has come through shoring up the pitching staff, especially via the bullpen.

The Yankees first traded for Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers and Fernando Cruz from the Cincinnati Reds. They also re-signed Jonathan Loáisiga, offering more possibilities for late-game situations. However, two names still exist in the ether who can be signed and were valuable pieces to the Yankees’ run to the American League pennant last season: Tommy Kahnle and Tim Hill.

Both hurlers — Kahnle, a right-hander, and Hill, a lefty — were valuable in different scenarios for the Yankees over the long 2024 season. Neither completely separated themselves from the pack in the same sort of sense as breakout Luke Weaver, but they were put into high-leverage situations by manager Aaron Boone and succeeded. They were essential players who may not show up with gaudy numbers when looking at FanGraphs or Baseball Reference, but they made an impact (especially against lefties). For more on them, check out Peter’s free agent target profiles here and here, respectively.

So, with pitchers and catchers soon to report (it can’t come fast enough), we want to hear from you about who the Yankees should sign! Should the Yankees stick with the changeup-heavy, spunky right-hander? Or should they go with the sidearm-throwing, deceptive lefty? Or is it best to move on? Vote below and let us know.

The New York Yankees have a big decision to make this offseason regarding two of their key relievers: Zack Britton and Adam Ottavino. Both pitchers played crucial roles in the bullpen this past season, but with the team facing financial constraints and a tight budget, re-signing both may not be feasible.

Britton, known for his sinkerball and ability to induce ground balls, has been a reliable setup man for the Yankees since being acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles in 2018. Ottavino, on the other hand, is a strikeout artist with a devastating slider who was signed as a free agent prior to the 2019 season.

While both pitchers have shown their value to the team, the question remains: should the Yankees prioritize re-signing them this offseason? With other areas of the roster in need of attention and younger, cheaper options available in the bullpen, some fans may argue that it would be wiser to allocate resources elsewhere.

On the other hand, retaining Britton and Ottavino would provide stability and experience to a bullpen that has been a strength for the Yankees in recent years. Their veteran presence could be invaluable, especially in high-pressure situations during the postseason.

So, what do you think? Should the Yankees re-sign Zack Britton and Adam Ottavino, or should they look to move on and invest in other areas of the roster? Cast your vote below and let your voice be heard!

  • Will Sheldon Whitehouse vote to confirm RFK Jr.? Here’s why it might happen.

As the confirmation hearings for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services continue to heat up, many are wondering how Senator Sheldon Whitehouse will ultimately vote. While Whitehouse has been known for his progressive stance on healthcare and environmental issues, there are several reasons why he might ultimately vote to confirm RFK Jr.

First and foremost, Kennedy’s strong advocacy for healthcare reform aligns with Whitehouse’s own beliefs and priorities. Kennedy has been a vocal proponent of expanding access to affordable healthcare and addressing the opioid crisis, issues that are close to Whitehouse’s heart.

Additionally, Kennedy’s background as an environmental advocate may also appeal to Whitehouse. As a longtime champion of climate action and conservation efforts, Whitehouse may see Kennedy’s appointment as a step in the right direction for addressing pressing environmental challenges.

Furthermore, Kennedy’s track record of fighting for social justice and civil rights could also resonate with Whitehouse, who has been a vocal advocate for racial equality and criminal justice reform.

While Whitehouse has not yet publicly stated his position on Kennedy’s confirmation, these factors may suggest that he could ultimately vote in favor of RFK Jr. as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services. Stay tuned as the confirmation process unfolds.

  • Senate to vote on Sean Duffy confirmation for transportation secretary

Washington — The Senate is expected to vote Tuesday on the confirmation of former Rep. Sean Duffy as transportation secretary, with wide bipartisan support expected, as some of President Trump’s more controversial nominees face confirmation hearings this week.

Duffy, 53, represented Wisconsin in the Senate from 2011 to 2019 and previously served as the district attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin. He joined Fox News as a contributor and co-hosted a show on Fox Business after leaving Congress, until President Trump announced his selection for transportation secretary. He and his wife, whom he met on a reality television show, have nine children.

The Senate voted unanimously to advance Duffy Monday night, after he appeared before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee earlier this month. At the hearing, he was introduced by the two Wisconsin senators — Republican Ron Johnson and Democrat Tammy Baldwin.

“I am confident that Sean is the right person for this job in this upcoming administration,” Baldwin said, adding that Duffy will work with “both sides of the aisle to improve our infrastructure and address the challenges that arise in the years ahead.”

Sean Duffy, President Trump's nominee for Secretary of Transportation, testifies before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee during his confirmation hearing in the Russell Senate Office Building on January 15, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Duffy said in his opening statement that “transportation impacts every aspect of life,” pledging that with Mr. Trump and support from Congress, “I would hope to usher in a golden age of transportation and travel.”

“President Trump, he’s a builder. He wants to invest in rebuilding our nation’s crumbling infrastructure,” Duffy said, adding that Trump asked him to focus on the “big, the durable projects that connect our country and connect our people.”

Duffy said he would work to reduce red tape that slows critical infrastructure projects. And he pledged to prioritize road safety and keep safety as a top priority in aviation. He urged that the nation needs to modernize its systems, pledging to work to restore global confidence in Boeing and “ensure that our skies are safe.”

“Transportation is an extraordinary new era we’re entering in,” Duffy said. “We’re in a global race to out-innovate and out-compete the rest of the world. If confirmed, we will craft clear regulations which balance safety, innovation and cutting edge technology, but always focused on safety.”‘

Duffy has received widespread bipartisan support for his confirmation. Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised Duffy Monday as a five-term congressman and a co-chair of the Great Lakes task force, whom he said “worked with Republicans and Democrats in the House and the Senate on a number of infrastructure projects.”

“Mr. Duffy brings valuable experience that will help him in managing our nation’s sprawling transportation system,” Thune said. “And he has some important work ahead of him.”

With Duffy’s confirmation in hand, Thune teed up votes on a handful of other nominations in the coming days, including on Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, Doug Burgum to be Secretary of the Interior, Christopher Wright for energy secretary and Doug Collins for Veterans Affairs secretary. Meanwhile, some of the most controversial nominees — Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for secretary of Health and Human Services and Kash Patel for FBI director — are set to come before Senate committees for confirmation hearings this week.

The Senate is set to vote on the confirmation of former congressman Sean Duffy as the new transportation secretary. Duffy, a Republican from Wisconsin, has been nominated by President Trump to lead the Department of Transportation.

Duffy, who served in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019, is a strong advocate for infrastructure investment and has pledged to prioritize improving the nation’s roads, bridges, and public transportation systems. If confirmed, he would be responsible for overseeing the country’s transportation policies and infrastructure projects.

The Senate vote on Duffy’s confirmation is expected to be a close one, with Democrats expressing concerns about his lack of experience in transportation policy. However, Republicans have voiced their support for Duffy, citing his commitment to improving the country’s infrastructure.

Stay tuned for updates on the Senate vote and the future of transportation policy in the United States.
