NFL awards 2024: Lions, Vikings double up in voting for Sporting News’ honors
With the end of another NFL season and Super Bowl 59’s arrival, it’s time for the outlets covering the league to hand out major individual NFL awards. For Sporting News, that means revealing our prestigious pro football honors, too. The long-standing process was the same for 2024, as all the worthy recipients were determined by peer voting from around the league.
For Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year, the winners were selected by fellow players. The 927 ballots received for Offensive Player of the Year were the most since players began participating in the voting in 2008.
Only head coaches were allowed to vote for Coordinator of the Year and Coach of the Year. Only front-office staff and personnel decision-makers were allowed to vote for Executive of the Year.
In every case, players, coaches, and executives were advised not to pick anyone from their own team. Ballots were sent out electronically around the league, with a majority of teams voting before the early-January deadline. Below are those results — some of which might raise a few eyebrows.

Offensive Player of the Year: Saquon Barkley, RB, Eagles
2024 stats: 345 carries, 2,005 rushing yards, 13 TDs; 33 receptions for 278 yards, 2 TDs
Barkley had a monster season coming over from the NFC East rival Giants in free agency. He’s only the second Eagles player to win Sporting News NFL Player of the Year, 70 years since it was first awarded in 1954, following quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in 1960. He is the first Eagle to receive this honor since the award was split into separate offensive and defensive honors in 2008.
Barkley follows recent non-quarterback winners Tyreek Hill (2023), Justin Jefferson (2022), and Jonathan Taylor (2021), getting the nod that previous recent NFL rushing leaders Christian McCaffrey and Josh Jacobs didn’t get. Barkley got noticed for his big rushing total and bigger plays to lead the Eagles’ run-heavy offense, ending multiple seasons of frustration with his first team. He received 369 votes from his fellow players, almost twice as much as second-place finisher Josh Allen (188 votes).
MORE: Why Saquon Barkley is SN’s Offensive Player of the Year
Defensive Player of the Year: Myles Garrett, EDGE Browns
2024 stats: 14 sacks, 3 forced fumbles
Garrett is the first DPOY to repeat for SN since fellow future Hall of Famer J.J. Watt got back-to-back nods as a Texans defensive end in 2014 and 2015. Garrett remained his dominant pass-rushing and run-disrupting self, despite the Browns defense dropping off its production as a whole with some shakier back seven play. Garrett posted 14 sacks for a second consecutive season. He received 196 votes from his fellow players, finishing well ahead of his chief rival, the Steelers‘ T.J. Watt (121 votes), a recent previous winner.
MORE: How Myles Garrett’s rare back-to-back DPOY compares to J.J. Watt
Comeback Player of the Year: Sam Darnold, QB, Vikings
2024 stats: 4,319 passing yards, 35 TDs, 12 INTs, 7.9 yards per attempt, 66.2 completion percentage, 102.5 passer rating
Darnold is the second Vikings player to win the award since its SN inception in 2008, following Adrian Peterson and his 2,097-yard rushing season in 2012. Quarterbacks have dominated this award of late, winning seven consecutive times. Andrew Luck started the streak in 2018, and Tua Tagovailoa continued it as the previous winner.
Darnold received 503 votes and won by a considerable margin over another quarterback, Joe Burrow (144 votes), who had a massive season after missing much of 2023. He also didn’t have much competition from Chargers running back JK Dobbins (109 votes), who came back from a torn Achilles to star for his new team. The nature of the award is to come back well from poor play and adversity, not just injury. Darnold got the nod for his late-blooming season in Minnesota being so impressive.
Rookie of the Year: Jayden Daniels, QB, Commanders
2024 stats: 3,568 passing yards, 25 passing TDs, 9 INTs, 7.4 yards per pass attempt, 69.0 completion percentage, 100.1 passer rating, 891 rushing yards, 6 rushing TDs
Daniels is the third Washington player to win this award since its inception in 1955, joining fellow quarterback Robert Griffin III (2012) and Hall of Fame wide receiver Charley Taylor (1964). Daniels set rookie records for completion percentage and rushing yards by a QB. He won the Rookie of the Year award by a wide margin, receiving 454 votes, with Raiders tight end Brock Bowers getting the second most votes with 218.
He also got close to taking the Commanders to the Super Bowl after leading Washington to a 12-5 turnaround and road wins in the wild-card and divisional rounds. He has a case for being the best rookie QB in NFL history given his dual-threat production and franchise-changing professionalism. Daniels is on the early watchlist to win his first MVP in 2025.
MORE: Why Jayden Daniels is Rookie of the Year over Brock Bowers, Bo Nix
Coach of the Year: Kevin O’Connell, Vikings
O’Connell also is an honorary coordinator of the year given he calls plays for Minnesota’s prolific offense, which finished No. 12 in passing and No. 9 in scoring. He got this award for adjusting well at QB to get a career year from Darnold after rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy went down with a preseason knee injury. He also had a strong staff led by Flores.
The former Rams assistant is only 39, with plenty more good years ahead. O’Connell dominated the voting by his peers, receiving 14 votes, finishing well ahead of runners-up Dan Campbell, who won the award for leading the Lions last season, and Andy Reid (three votes each).
Coordinator of the Year: Ben Johnson, OC, Lions
Johnson (nine votes) beat out two defensive coordinators, the Vikings’ Brian Flores (three votes) and the Eagles’ Vic Fangio (two votes), to capture the award rather easily. Just like 2023 winner Mike Macdonald, who won this award as Ravens coordinator before taking the Seahawks head coaching job, Johnson is leaving his team.
Johnson will try to lead the NFC North rival Bears and franchise QB Caleb Williams to big things. In Johnson’s final season with the Lions, they were No. 2 in average yardage per game (409.5), No. 2 in total passing yards (4,474), No. 5 in total rushing yards (2,488), and No. 1 in average scoring per game (33.2 points).
Executive of the Year: Brad Holmes, GM, Lions
Campbell couldn’t repeat but Holmes (nine votes) did, despite some tough competition from Brandon Beane (Bills, five votes), Eric DeCosta (Ravens, three votes), Kwesi Adofo-Mensah (Vikings, three votes), Howie Roseman (Eagles, three votes), and Adam Peters (Commanders, two votes).
Holmes had a strong offseason again with rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, defensive tackle D.J. Reader, guard Kevin Zeitler, and kicker Jake Bates among the key additions to bolster a roster he loaded with young and more experienced talent. The respect for Holmes remains high in a league full of great decision-makers.
The NFL awards for the 2024 season are in, and it’s a double win for the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings in Sporting News’ annual honors. The Lions and Vikings each took home multiple awards, showcasing their standout performances on the field this past season.
For the Lions, quarterback Jared Goff was named Offensive Player of the Year, while defensive end Romeo Okwara earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Head coach Dan Campbell also received recognition, winning Coach of the Year for his leadership and team’s success.
On the other side, the Vikings saw running back Dalvin Cook take home the title of Offensive Player of the Year, and linebacker Eric Kendricks was named Defensive Player of the Year. Head coach Kevin O’Connell rounded out the honors, winning Coach of the Year for his impressive debut season.
Overall, it was a successful year for both the Lions and Vikings, and their players and coaches are deserving of the recognition they received in the Sporting News awards. Congratulations to all the winners!

Next phase in voting for Utah’s NHL team name begins
Next phase in voting for Utah’s NHL team name begins
Fans can take the survey at any of the next four home games
Utah Hockey Club fans who attend any of the next four home games will enjoy an exciting opportunity – being able to participate in the next phase of a survey to vote on the team’s permanent name.
Smith Entertainment Group has conducted a series of these surveys because Ryan and Ashley Smith are committed to Utah’s NHL team being a community asset, and directly involving fans in the naming process has been a big part of bringing that to life.
The multiphase survey process began last spring with SEG inviting hockey fans and the Utah community to nominate and vote on their favorite team names. Initially, Ryan Smith asked fans to submit name ideas on X. That produced 20 potential names for the first round of fan voting, and the second round was narrowed to six. Fans showcased their enthusiasm by casting more than 750,000 votes.
Because this next round features not only names but also logos and branding treatments, only fans attending the next four Utah Hockey Club home games at Delta Center, starting tonight, will be able to participate.
Utah Hockey Club’s sellout streak is holding strong, and 15,000 fans are anticipated to attend each of the following games:
- Wednesday, Jan. 29 vs. Pittsburgh
- Friday, Jan. 31 vs. Columbus
- Sunday, Feb. 2 vs. St. Louis
- Tuesday, Feb. 4 vs. Philadelphia
SEG staff will be positioned around the arena before and during the games to help interested fans take the survey and cast their vote for the name and logo they like best. As with past surveys, an SEG representative clarified that this new iteration will utilize Qualtrics to ensure fairness, accuracy, and unbiased results through best practice, survey-research methodology, which includes randomization, progressive discrete choice analysis, encrypted data collection and storage. Backend analysis will also include best practice statistical methods to ensure data integrity.
So, what names made the shortlist for this round?
- Utah Hockey Club
- Utah Mammoth
- Utah Wasatch
Utah Hockey Club and Utah Mammoth were names included in the latest round of top six names. Utah Wasatch is a new option created to honor the idea of a mythical snow creature with a Utah-centric approach inspired by the Wasatch Mountain range.
As fans will see, one name is not on the list: Yeti, which was also one of the top six names included in the most recent survey round. An SEG executive shared that it explored every avenue to make Yeti work but that YETI Coolers, LLC was ultimately unwilling to agree to a co-existence agreement. SEG has confirmed it is no longer pursuing Yeti as a potential name for the team.
The commitment SEG has to involve the fans and community in the naming process is unique in the history of professional sports. SEG said they are on track to announce the permanent team name before the start of the 2025-26 NHL season.
After months of anticipation, the next phase in voting for Utah’s NHL team name is officially underway. Fans have submitted their suggestions for the team’s name, and now it’s time to narrow down the options. The team has revealed the top five potential names, and fans are invited to vote for their favorite. The options include the Utah Grizzlies, Salt Lake City Summit, Wasatch Warriors, Rocky Mountain Rampage, and Salt Lake City Slickers.
Voting will be open for the next two weeks, with the winning name being announced at a special event next month. Fans are encouraged to cast their vote and help choose the perfect name for Utah’s newest NHL team.
Stay tuned for updates on the voting process and be sure to show your support for your favorite team name. Let’s make history together as we welcome Utah’s NHL team to the league! #UtahNHL #TeamNameVote

There’s always going to be a bit of controversy and disagreement when it comes to NBA All-Star voting. Someone will always think, “Player X should’ve made it over Player Y, and why on earth is Player Z there?” That’s just the nature of the beast.
But what I will say is that I think, for how the voting process goes, the NBA probably has the right formula cooking.
The league’s All-Star starters are decided by three groups: Fans, media, and players. The fan vote represents 50 percent of the tally, and the media and players get another 25 percent, respectively.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS: Here’s Byran Kalbrosky with more on how this all comes together
That’s where the controversy comes in this year.
LaMelo Ball is probably the biggest All-Star snub missing from the starters. Not because Jalen Brunson is a bad choice — he’s a great one. I have no problem with him starting in the game. It’s just that Ball has been the East’s leader in the fan vote by a fairly wide margin for the entire season. The fans clearly want to see him starting in this game.
The problem is that Ball placed 7th in media voting for Eastern Conference guards. He only got three votes total from the media, which is why he dropped out of the starting slot. He needed two more to become the starter.
Because of this, fans are complaining that the NBA needs to change its formula back to strictly fan voting for the All-Star game.
I’m sorry, y’all. I love the fans. I am one. But that’s ridiculous.
I hate to break it to you, folks. But we do not deserve that sort of power. We have no idea what to do with it.
We’re talking about the same fans who nearly had Zaza Pachulia penciled in as an All-Star starter almost a decade ago during the Warriors’ prime years. A K-Pop band got Andrew Wiggins a starting nod a few years ago. Justin Bieber did the same thing for Kyle Lowry (who deserved to be an All-Star!) back in 2015.
You see what I’m getting at here, right?
As fans, we are unserious. We don’t care. More people would probably be interested in trolling the vote these days as opposed to making a serious effort to get the right players into the game.
The media vote serves as a check on any trolling. So does the player vote to a much lesser extent (because players can be trolls, too).
It might not feel perfect. If LaMelo is your favorite player, it might feel upsetting that he didn’t make it. That’s understandable.,
But trust me when I say you do NOT want to put All-Star voting solely in the hands of the fans. This is for the best.
Kevin Durant says it best
Sports documentaries are kind of boring now. There are too many for my taste, and some make me wonder, “Why does this exist again?”
Not for Court of Gold, though. Netflix created a documentary on Team USA’s Men’s Basketball team and their journey to the gold medal. Kevin Durant says in the documentary that they called themselves the Avengers.
That’s not the best quote in the trailer, though. It follows a quote from Evan Fournier about how the French national team has 10 years of chemistry and how the NBA guys get together for three weeks and just roll the ball out there.
And that’s a fair point. But Kevin Durant had the perfect rebuttal:
“Is that chemistry going to help you when you’ve got to guard Steph?”
Guys. GUYS. That’s so perfect. Words can’t even explain. Especially considering how things ended for France.
THE DEVIL NAMED CURRY: Steph absolutely put France away in the gold medal game
Don’t know about y’all. But this doc is now must-see TV for me.

The NBA All-Star voting system has been a hot topic of debate in recent years, with many fans and players calling for changes to the current format. One common suggestion is to increase fan input in the voting process, allowing them to have a greater say in which players make the All-Star teams. However, I argue that NBA All-Star voting doesn’t need more fan input. The current system, which combines fan, player, and media votes, already provides a balanced and fair representation of the league’s top talent. Allowing fans to have a larger say in the voting process could potentially lead to popularity contests and skewed results.
Furthermore, giving fans more control over All-Star voting could also open the door to strategic voting and ballot stuffing. We’ve seen this happen in other sports leagues, where fans rally together to vote for their favorite players, regardless of their actual performance on the court.
Ultimately, the NBA All-Star game is meant to showcase the best of the best in the league, and the current voting system does a good job of achieving that goal. While fan input is important, it’s crucial to strike a balance between fan, player, and media votes to ensure a fair and competitive All-Star game.

Early voting resumes for US Congressional District 1 Matt Gaetz vacated
Early voting is set to resume Friday in both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties following a winter storm that shut down polls for several days this week.
Tuesday, Jan. 28, is the Republican primary election for the District 1 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives vacated by former Rep. Matt Gaetz in November. The winner of the Republican primary will move on to face Democratic candidate Gay Valimont, non-party affiliated candidate Stephen Broden and several write-in candidates on April 1.
Early voting began as scheduled Saturday, Jan. 18, with extended hours, but was suspended Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as a winter storm dumped an estimated 10 inches of snow in some parts of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, creating unsafe road conditions for voters and poll workers.
Escambia County Supervisor of Elections Robert Bender and Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections Tappie Villane both said Thursday they plan to reopen polling locations with extended hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., both Friday and Saturday.
“I would say as of right now, we do plan on opening it at 7 a.m. tomorrow. We’ll make a final determination if we need to have a delayed opening (Friday) based on how road conditions progress today,” Bender said Thursday morning, but he noted, “All indications are we will be open at 7 tomorrow.”
Villane said Santa Rosa County in a similar posture, noting crews had assessed the area around the Main Supervisor of Elections Office in Milton, 6495 Caroline St., Suite F, and foresaw no major issues with travel. She said they would do a similar check at the county’s other early voting site, the South Santa Rosa Service Center (Annex) in Gulf Breeze; 5841 Gulf Breeze Parkway.
“If something else should happen today, we’ll put out an update,” Villane said. “But we’re planning to have staff and poll workers, everyone, ready at 7 a.m. (Friday).”
According to unofficial voter turnout data from the Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections website, about 2% (2,328) of the county’s 91,205 registered Republican voters had participated in early voting as of noon Thursday. Some 942 voted by mail and 1,386 turned out for early voting during the limited period it was open.
Turnout was slightly better in Escambia County, with about 6% turnout (6,099) among the county’s 102,284 registered Republican voters. Unofficial totals at noon Thursday showed 3,597 votes cast by mail and 2,502 votes cast during early voting.
“We did see a strong turnout the first, at least, two days,” Bender said. “They were much better than what we had seen in March, but I think that was people trying to get in and vote before the storm hit. So, we are glad that we have, hopefully, two full days of early voting after the weather event, and Election Day, Jan. 28, all locations will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.”
The seat opened up when Gaetz resigned the seat he had held since 2016. Gaetz initially resigned after being nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as attorney general. When the nomination fell through, Gaetz, who had the choice to return to his seat, chose not to do so.
Ten Republicans will face off Tuesday. The race includes Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, Retired Naval Aviator Aaron Dimmock, Navarre physician and former state Rep. Dr. Joel Rudman, businessman and former Escambia County Commissioner Gene Valentino, former military pilot and Pensacola resident Greg Merk, Navarre High School teacher Jeff Peacock, educator Kevin Gaffney, former Navy pilot John Mills, attorney Michael Dylan Thompson and Fort Walton Beach resident Jeff Macey.

Winter storm halts early voting, but Escambia County extends poll hours to ensure access
ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The extreme winter weather interrupted just about everything this week in Northwest Florida, including early voting for next week’s congressional primary election.
Republican voters are being asked to decide on a candidate to fill the seat vacated by Matt Gaetz.
“It was something new for all of us,” said Robert Bender, Escambia County Supervisor of Elections. “I called the state last week and said, ‘I think we’re gonna have an event that we’ve never had in Florida elections before’ — and that is being closed for a snow storm.”
Bender says the second they saw the forecast, they began preparations.
“We expanded hours early on the front end so that it would give voters an opportunity to come in before the snow storm,” he said.
Many voters took advantage of that opportunity.
“We did hear from a lot of people that they were coming in and getting it out of the way ahead of the snow storm,” Bender said. “And it showed in our numbers. Compared to March, we actually doubled the numbers of voters on a Sunday than what we had in March.”
Just in case you haven’t already, there’s still time to cast your vote.
The poll hours have also been extended these last two days: opening from 7a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We think everyone has had an opportunity to vote if they want to, especially being open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and tomorrow,” Bender said.
Due to a severe winter storm hitting the area, early voting in Escambia County has been temporarily halted for the safety of voters and poll workers. However, in order to ensure that all residents have access to the polls, Escambia County has announced that they will be extending poll hours. This decision was made to accommodate any voters who may have been unable to make it to the polls earlier in the day due to the inclement weather. By extending the hours, the county is ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to cast their vote in this important election.
Escambia County officials are urging residents to stay safe and only venture out if absolutely necessary. They are also encouraging voters to take advantage of the extended hours to make their voices heard in this election.
Despite the challenges posed by the winter storm, Escambia County is committed to ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the democratic process. The extended poll hours are just one way that they are working to make that happen.

But Gilgeous-Alexander increased his lead over Curry from 441,685 votes to 612,254 votes. Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić, out due to a calf injury, is in third place behind Curry.
Warriors wing Andrew Wiggins still is in eighth place among Western Conference forwards, earning 410,011 votes on the latest round of balloting.

Warriors must realize current youngsters nothing like championship past | NBC Sports Bay Area
This Warriors roster has no “next” Curry. No “next” Draymond. No “next” Klay Thompson. And certainly no “next” Kevin Durant. That quartet, with capable assistance from such culture-altering vets as Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston, built a monument.
Five consecutive trips to the NBA Finals represent a mythical achievement; no team had done in more than 50 years. Four championships in eight seasons? Only one other team has ever done it.
None of the youngsters on the Golden State’s roster has established himself as someone around whom championships can be built. Each, including Kuminga and Moody, in their fourth seasons, has questions yet to be answered about their true ceiling.
NBA Intel: Warriors, Bucks, Suns, Hornets, more | Hoops Hype
The Warriors have continued their due diligence on the trade market and inquired about potential frontcourt upgrades, including Nikola Vucevic, John Collins, Jonas Valanciunas, and Robert Williams, league sources told HoopsHype. Conversely, the chances of Golden State acquiring previously reported wing targets such as Jimmy Butler and Cam Johnson have decreased, sources said.
Kawakami: Why missing the playoffs might not be so bad for the Warriors | The San Francisco Standard
As it stands now, the Warriors are sitting in the 13th slot in next June’s draft but with a real shot to end up in the top 10. The team in the No. 9 slot before the lottery has a 4.5% chance to win the No. 1 pick (and potential superstar Cooper Flagg), a 4.8% shot at No. 2, a 5.2% chance at No. 3 and 5.7% at No. 4. That’s 20.2% to get one of those four picks — in a draft that seems to offer a chance at a star at least through the fifth or sixth selection.
If the Warriors end up in the eighth slot going into the lottery, they’d have a better than 25% chance at one of the top-four picks and a 6% at No. 1. And the higher the pick ends up, the more value it’ll have on the trade market.

How the Thunder defense — ‘guys that do the little work’ — continues to overwhelm | The Athletic
With the Oklahoma City Thunder reaching the halfway point of one of the great regular seasons in NBA history, it’s only natural that they compare themselves to majestic creatures.
“The world is seeing all of the, what we call the cockroaches in our locker room, the cockroaches and hyenas,” said Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was masterful in gliding his way to 40 points in three quarters of Thursday’s 134-114 statement win against the Cleveland Cavaliers. “The guys that do the little work, that don’t get the most plays, that don’t average 30, but their part of our season, our winning, is just as big.
“I’m glad people got to see that, that we’re not just one or two guys; we’re 15 guys.”
Inside the simmering feud between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat — and why it’s about to boil | ESPN
While Heat sources say they expect Butler to return Friday against the Nuggets and are fully prepared for him to play, there remains a palpable dread at what he might do and the environment the ongoing chaos might create. “I don’t know how he can come back to this locker room,” one source close to the team said. Another said, “We don’t want him back.”
If history — like, say, in Minnesota in 2018 — serves as precedent, the discomfort could deepen, quickly.
“Jimmy hasn’t even really started,” one source close to Butler said.

In all, the league found 15 instances to review in those two minutes, but deemed all such instances correct calls or correct non-calls. The final timeout, which was initially granted at 0.8 seconds (though the clock expired before things were sorted out), was explained as “Golden State signals for and is awarded a timeout prior to the expiration of the game clock. After communicating with the Replay Center, the game clock is reset to 00:01.0.”
Always good to avoid controversy … especially when you win.

We have more from around the basketball world:
- Will a new basketball league to challenge the NBA come to fruition? According to Bloomberg.com, a group of investors being advised by Maverick Carter, LeBron’s business partner, is seeking to raise $5 billion from private capital sources to form an international basketball league. James himself is not part of the efforts to form this new league, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The investors, which includes multiple private equity funds, are looking to form a league consisting of six men’s teams and six women’s teams playing games around the world, Charania adds.
- Speaking of international games, NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed on Shaquille O’Neal’s podcast that discussions have been held regarding a new European league, Eurohoops relays. “One of the things we’ve been discussing is whether, before adding NBA franchises in Europe, there’s an opportunity to create an independent league there. This could leverage the enormous interest in basketball in major European capitals like Paris, London, Berlin, and Madrid— and other major cities that love basketball,” Silver said. Discussions between the NBA and FIBA regarding the proposed league have previously been reported.
- Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix and Liam McKeone hand out their midseason awards, including Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Mannix chooses Gilgeous-Alexander as his midseason MVP, while McKeone selects Jokic. They also take a look at the highs and lows of the season so far.
