  • Daron Payne, Bobby Wagner remain out of practice for Commanders

The Commanders remained without two key defensive players at practice on Thursday.

Defensive tackle Daron Payne (knee, finger) and linebacker Bobby Wagner (ankle) missed practice for the second straight day. Wagner missed two practices last week before playing against Detroit and Payne was limited in practice during the week.

Quarterback Jeff Driskel (illness) was added to the report after missing practice. Guard Sam Cosmi was also out and he will miss Sunday’s game after tearing his ACL against the Lions.

Defensive end Clelin Ferrell (knee) and tight end Zach Ertz (rib) returned to practice. Ferrell was limited and Ertz was a full participant.

Tight end John Bates (shoulder), defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste (shoulder), wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus (hip), wide receiver Jamison Crowder (rest), linebacker Frankie Luvu (shoulder), and tight end Ben Sinnott (shoulder) were limited participants.

Daron Payne and Bobby Wagner, two key players for the Washington Commanders, were absent from practice once again today. Both players have been dealing with injuries and their status for the upcoming game remains uncertain.

Payne, a standout defensive tackle, has been sidelined with a knee injury and has missed the last few practices. Wagner, a veteran linebacker, is nursing a hamstring injury and has also been held out of practice.

The Commanders are hopeful that both players will be able to return to the field soon, as they are crucial pieces of the team’s defense. However, their absence from practice is certainly cause for concern as the Commanders prepare for their next game.

Stay tuned for updates on Payne and Wagner’s status as the Commanders continue their preparations for their upcoming matchup.

  • Bobby Wagner is off Commanders injury report, Daron Payne listed as questionable

Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner shared his thoughts on what the team has to do to limit Eagles running back Saquon Barkley earlier this week and the team confirmed he’ll be part of those plans on Friday.

Wagner missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday with an ankle injury, but he has no injury designation for Sunday after returning for a limited session. Wagner will be bidding to make it to the Super Bowl for the third time in his career after making it twice during his time in Seattle.

The Commanders did not get defensive lineman Daron Payne back at practice, but they haven’t ruled him out. He’s questionable due to play because of knee and finger injuries.

Quarterback Jeff Driskel (illness) and defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste (shoulder) are also listed as questionable. Right guard Sam Cosmi will miss the game with a torn ACL.

Great news for Washington Commanders fans! Star linebacker Bobby Wagner has been removed from the injury report ahead of this week’s game. Wagner has been dealing with some minor injuries, but it looks like he’ll be good to go on game day.

However, there is some concern about defensive lineman Daron Payne, who is listed as questionable for the upcoming game. Payne has been a key player on the defensive line and his absence could be felt if he’s unable to suit up.

Let’s hope Payne is able to recover in time for the game and that the Commanders can continue their winning ways with Wagner leading the defense. Stay tuned for updates on Payne’s status as game day approaches. #WashingtonCommanders #BobbyWagner #DaronPayne #NFLInjuryReport

  • Franz Wagner returns to Magic lineup after 20-game absence

Game Recap: Trail Blazers 101, Magic 79

Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner returned to the lineup Thursday after missing 20 straight games with a torn oblique. He led the Magic with 20 points in Orlando’s 100-79 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Wagner and All-Star power forward Paolo Banchero will be paired for just the sixth time this season. Banchero missed 34 games with the same injury as Wagner before returning in late December.

Shooting 34.2%, the Magic lost their fifth straight and seventh of eight games. They were 16-9, a solid third in the East, when Wagner was injured. Thursday night’s loss dropped them to 23-23, eighth in the conference. They are 2-8 since Jalen Suggs injured his back.

“I think it’s gigantic,” Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley said. “We talk about the pieces coming back together, us being whole again, slowly but surely. … With all the standards he has set as a a leader, having him back is going to be big.”

The Magic went 7-13 without Franz Wagner, who played the expected 24 minutes on Thursday. Orlando also lost center Moritz Wagner, Franz’s older brother, to a season-ending knee injury, and Suggs, who missed his 10th game with a lower back strain.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

After a 20-game absence, Franz Wagner is finally set to return to the Orlando Magic lineup. The rookie forward has been sidelined with an ankle injury but is now ready to get back on the court and help his team compete.

Wagner, who has been a key contributor for the Magic this season, is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the team’s offense and defense. His versatility and ability to score from all areas of the court make him a valuable asset for Orlando.

Fans and teammates alike are excited to see Wagner back in action and are hopeful that his return will help the Magic turn things around after a tough stretch of games. With his energy and determination, Wagner is sure to make a significant impact as the Magic look to climb up the standings.

Welcome back, Franz Wagner! The Magic are thrilled to have you back on the court. Let’s get back to winning ways! #MagicBasketball #FranzWagner #WelcomeBack

  • Wagner finally in, Utley trending toward eventual Hall of Fame election? – NBC Sports Philadelphia

There was no doubt about Ichiro and little doubt about CC Sabathia, but one-time Phillies closer Billy Wagner still had to sweat it out in his 10th and final year on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, finally clearing the 75% voting threshold for enshrinement.

Wagner, who fell just five votes shy a year ago, received 82.5% of votes this time and was one of three players voted in by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, along with Ichiro and Sabathia.

Former Braves all-world centerfielder Andruw Jones fell about 30 votes short, appearing on just over 66% of ballots. He and Carlos Beltran (70%) were the two nearest misses but are trending toward election.

So is Chase Utley, one of the biggest risers in the field. The only five players to receive more votes this year were the three elected, Beltran and Jones. Utley received 39.8% of Hall of Fame votes this time around after appearing on 28.8% of ballots in 2024, his first year of eligibility. For reference, Wagner had a similar vote total in 2021, four years before making it in.

Utley should see another increase in 2026 when there aren’t sure-fire first-timers on the ballot like Ichiro and Sabathia. Cole Hamels will probably be the biggest new name eligible next year followed by a massive drop-off to potential one-and-dones like Shin-Soo Choo and Alex Gordon.

Former Phillies Bobby Abreu and Jimmy Rollins each received 14.8% of votes last year and jumped to 19.5% and 18%, respectively. Abreu is a quintessential example of a player whose skill set has gained more appreciation through the years, but he’ll have only four more chances via the writers’ ballot. This was Year 4 for Rollins.

It is clear that the voting body values Utley far above the other two. From 2005-09, he was perhaps the best overall player in baseball, hitting .301/.388/.535 with elite defense, elite baserunning and averages of 39 doubles, 29 home runs, 101 RBI and 111 runs scored. The question was always whether that peak was long enough. Two years into the process, it looks like the answer could be yes.

Former Phillie Dick Allen will be inducted posthumously this summer in Cooperstown after being elected with Dave Parker via a Veterans Committee ballot in December.

Wagner finally in, Utley trending toward eventual Hall of Fame election?

After years of waiting, former Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has finally been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Rollins, who played for the Phillies from 2000 to 2014, was a key member of the team’s 2008 World Series championship squad and was a three-time All-Star during his career.

Rollins’ induction has sparked speculation about the Hall of Fame chances of other former Phillies players, including closer Billy Wagner and second baseman Chase Utley.

Wagner, who played for the Phillies from 2004 to 2005, was one of the most dominant relievers of his era. He recorded 422 saves over his 16-year career and was a seven-time All-Star. Despite his impressive resume, Wagner has been overlooked by Hall of Fame voters in recent years. However, with Rollins now inducted, Wagner’s chances of eventually being elected to the Hall of Fame seem to be improving.

Utley, who played for the Phillies from 2003 to 2015, was a fan favorite and a key contributor to the team’s success during the mid-2000s. Utley was a six-time All-Star and won four Silver Slugger Awards during his career. He was also known for his exceptional defensive skills at second base.

While Utley has not yet been eligible for Hall of Fame consideration, he is widely regarded as one of the best second basemen of his era. Many believe that he has a strong chance of eventually being elected to the Hall of Fame.

As Rollins celebrates his induction into the Hall of Fame, Phillies fans are hopeful that Wagner and Utley will also receive the recognition they deserve for their contributions to the team and the game of baseball.

  • Magic’s Franz Wagner Nearing Return From Torn Oblique

4:26pm: Wagner will indeed make his return from his torn oblique injury that caused him to miss 20 games, the Magic announced (via Twitter). Additionally, Howard will be listed as available after missing the past five games (Twitter link per Beede).

12:14pm: Forward Franz Wagner has been sidelined since December 6 — a span of 20 games — after tearing his right oblique, but he’s close to returning to action for the Magic, who have listed the former lottery pick as questionable for Thursday’s matchup with Portland, tweets Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel.

Head coach Jamahl Mosley said Wagner “was able to go through shootaround (on Thursday morning) and is obviously progressing well so we’ll see what the day brings after this shootaround.” Speaking to reporters afterward, Wagner confirmed there’s a chance he’ll play tonight (Twitter video link via Beede).

(The questionable tag) means that I might play, I might not,” the German said with a smile. “We’ll see how the day goes. But it feels really good. It was a long process and I’m not the most patient person.”

Wagner, 23, was having a breakout fourth season for Orlando prior to the injury, averaging career-best numbers in several counting stats, including points (24.4), rebounds (5.6), assists (5.7) and steals per game (1.7). He posted a shooting slash line of .465/.321/.881 in 25 contests (33.2 minutes).

On January 14, Wagner had his status changed to “return to competition reconditioning,” stating at the time that his muscle had fully healed and that he felt good, but he needed to get back in playing shape. It was the first significant absence of his career — he had only missed 13 total games in three seasons leading up to 2024/25.

Wagner’s return appearing imminent is certainly great news for the Magic, who went just 7-13 without him, including losing their last four games. Orlando is currently the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 23-22. The team has been dominant when Wagner is on the court (plus-8.6 per 100 possession), but has struggled mightily (minus-5.9) when he’s not.

Orlando has dealt with significant injury absences all season. Mosley provided updates on several other injured players on Thursday, according to Beede:

    • Goga Bitadze (concussion protocol) did some on-court work on Thursday to see how he’ll respond, but he didn’t take contact and he’s listed as doubtful Thursday.
    • Both Jalen Suggs (low back strain) and Gary Harris (left hamstring strain) worked out Thursday and the team will see how they’re doing afterward. Suggs remains out, while Harris is questionable vs. Portland.
    • Jonathan Isaac (illness) is officially questionable, but Mosley said he’s feeling much better and will suit up tonight.
    • Cole Anthony is also dealing with an illness and wasn’t at shootaround, but there’s a chance he could play if he’s feeling better in a handful of hours — he’s officially questionable.
    • Jett Howard (left ankle sprain) is questionable. He did some on-court work at shootaround.

After missing over a month with a torn oblique, Magic’s Franz Wagner is nearing his return to the court. The rookie forward has been making progress in his recovery and is expected to resume full basketball activities in the coming days.

Wagner’s absence has been felt by the Magic, as he was averaging 11.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game before his injury. His versatile skill set and high basketball IQ have been sorely missed, but his imminent return provides a much-needed boost for the struggling team.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Wagner’s comeback, as he has shown flashes of potential and has quickly become a fan favorite. His return will provide a much-needed spark for the Magic, who are looking to turn their season around and climb up the standings.

Stay tuned for updates on Wagner’s return and be sure to catch him in action as he looks to make a strong comeback from his injury. The Magic will surely be glad to have him back on the court.

  • Franz Wagner injury update: Magic forward ramping up for return from torn oblique

    franz-wagner-magic-usatsi.jpg
    USATSI

Franz Wagner will miss his 18th consecutive game when the Orlando Magic play the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Friday, but here he is putting in some work after morning shooaround, via the Orlando Sentinel’s Jason Beede:

Wagner was playing at an All-NBA level before he tore his right oblique on Dec. 6. Before Orlando’s loss in Milwaukee on Wednesday, the team changed his status on the injury report — the game against Boston will be the second in which he has been listed as out due to “return to competition reconditioning” rather than the oblique injury itself. This means he’s ramping up to get back on the floor, rather than simply resting and rehabilitating.

“Obviously, he’s had to sit out for a while now, and we’re all eager to have him back,” Magic forward Paolo Banchero told reporters Friday. “It’s just good to have him back, participating in some shootarounds and stuff like that. Can’t wait to have him back out there.”

Banchero suffered the exact same injury on Oct. 30. He entered the “return to competition reconditioning” phase on Dec. 27 and was back in the lineup two weeks later. If Wagner’s timeline is the same, he’ll suit up again in late January/early February. Having the same injury, however, does not necessarily mean that Wagner’s ramp-up process will be identical to Banchero’s. If his body responds differently, he could clear the requisite benchmarks a little earlier or later.

Thanks to the NBA’s second-best defense, Orlando is 23-19 despite its two best players having not shared the floor since the fifth game of the season. Over the next few months, the question is how good the Magic can be on the offensive end when they’re both playing big minutes. Banchero has only been back for three games and remains on a minutes restriction, and Wagner will surely be eased in the same way. In theory, though, this team could be pretty legit pretty soon.

Franz Wagner, the talented forward for the Orlando Magic, is making progress in his recovery from a torn oblique injury. The rookie standout has been sidelined for several weeks, but he is now ramping up his activity and getting closer to a return to the court.

Wagner suffered the injury during a game in late November and has been working diligently with the team’s medical staff to rehab and strengthen the affected area. He has been participating in light workouts and non-contact drills, gradually increasing his intensity and workload as he progresses in his recovery.

The Magic are optimistic about Wagner’s potential return in the near future, as he continues to show improvement and resilience in his rehabilitation process. His presence on the court will undoubtedly be a boost for the team, as he has already made a significant impact in his rookie season.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Wagner’s return and are looking forward to seeing him back in action, showcasing his talent and contributing to the team’s success. Stay tuned for more updates on his progress as he gets closer to making his comeback.

  • Franz Wagner Updated to Questionable For Magic’s Thursday Game vs. Portland

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner has been upgraded to questionable ahead of the Magic’s Thursday night matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers.

It is the first time he’s not been listed as out since the fourth-year forward tore his right oblique on Dec. 6 at Philadelphia.

Wagner has missed the last 20 games due to injury – 16 due to the torn right abdominal muscle (Dec. 8- Jan. 12) and the last four because of return to competition reconditioning (Jan. 15-21). Before going down with the same injury as All-Star teammate Paolo Banchero, Wagner was averaging 24.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists on 46.5/32.1/88.1 percent shooting splits through 25 games.

Yet, 20 of those 25 games came without Banchero because of the former No. 1 overall pick’s ailment. Wagner’s play was a catalyzing reason as to how the Magic went 13-7 without one of their two best players.

Banchero recently returned from his 10-week absence and has played in six games. Now, the return of his star frontcourt mate seems imminent over the coming games.

The news of Wagner’s upgrade to questionable comes after ESPN reported that he’d begun contact work last week while the Magic were in Boston. The same report, which came out on Jan. 17, mentioned that Orlando was hopeful to get the No. 8 pick from the 2021 NBA Draft back in 7-10 days.

Thursday’s matchup with Portland (Jan. 23), Saturday’s contest vs. Detroit (Jan. 25) and Monday’s game at Miami (Jan. 27) all fall in or around that window before Orlando heads west for their only other large West Coast trip this season. The first of those five games comes Thursday, Jan. 30 at Portland.

Asked before Sunday’s home game before the Denver Nuggets about the latest on Wagner’s status, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said: “Being able to get on the floor, do some conditioning, and getting a little bit more bumps with guys on the floor with him. He was able to do some stuff [Saturday] as well as [Sunday], and I think it’s just going to see how responds to those two episodes those two times [Monday].”

Orlando is 23-22 this season, now having slipped to eighth in the Eastern Conference after dropping four straight contests. Since Wagner went down, the Magic are just 7-13 as injuries have mounted. The first 14 of those games came without Banchero, the last nine have been without Jalen Suggs, and the last 15 have been without Franz’s brother Moe Wagner.

As for the rest of the Magic’s injury report, all of Cole Anthony (illness), Jonathan Isaac (illness), Gary Harris (left hamstring strain) and Jett Howard (left ankle sprain) join Franz as questionable.

Goga Bitadze, who’s been in concussion protocol for the last four games, is doubtful to return. Suggs is the only player on the Magic’s 15-man roster who is out, missing his 10th straight game with a low back strain suffered Jan. 3 at Toronto. And, Moe Wagner won’t return this season after tearing his ACL in his left knee, undergoing a successful surgery to repair the torn ligament on Jan. 8.

Franz Wagner, the rookie forward for the Orlando Magic, has been updated to questionable for Thursday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Wagner has been dealing with a lingering ankle injury that has kept him out of the past few games.

Although Wagner has been listed as questionable, his status for Thursday’s game is still up in the air. The Magic will likely wait until closer to game time to make a final decision on his availability.

Wagner has been a key contributor for the Magic this season, averaging 14.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. His presence on the court has been sorely missed in recent games, and the Magic will be hoping to have him back in the lineup as soon as possible.

Stay tuned for updates on Wagner’s status as game time approaches. His availability could have a significant impact on the outcome of Thursday night’s matchup against the Trail Blazers.

  • Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, Billy Wagner elected to Hall of Fame

Ichiro Suzuki, a veritable hits machine on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, became the first Japanese player to gain entry into the National Baseball Hall of Fame when he was elected Tuesday to the Class of 2025 alongside pitchers CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and tabulated by Ernst & Young.

Players are elected to the Hall provided they are named on at least 75 percent of ballots cast by eligible voting members of the BBWAA. With 394 ballots submitted in the 2025 election, candidates needed to receive 296 votes to be elected.

Results | Public ballots (Feb. 4) | Voters | BBWAA inductees

Suzuki, who was on the ballot for the first time, came within one vote of being a unanimous selection, a feat achieved by only one player, relief pitcher Mariano Rivera in 2019, in 81 years of voting by the BBWAA. Ichiro, a multiple Gold Glove Award-winning outfielder, received 393 votes, which accounted for 99.746 percent of the electorate, second only to shortstop Derek Jeter’s 99.748-percent showing (396 of 397 ballots cast) in 2020 as the highest plurality for a position player in Hall of Fame voting.

Sabathia, another first-time honoree, received 342 votes (86.8 percent), and Wagner, who was on the BBWAA ballot for the 10th-and-final time, got 325 (82.5).

They will be honored during Induction Weekend 2025 July 25-28 in Cooperstown, N.Y., at the July 27 Induction Ceremony on the grounds of the Clark Sports Center along with Dave Parker and the late Dick Allen, who were elected by the Classic Baseball Era Committee last month in Dallas.

Also honored that weekend will be the Ford C. Frick Award winner for baseball broadcasting, Tom Hamilton, and the BBWAA Career Excellence Award winner for baseball writing, Thomas Boswell, July 26 at the Awards Presentation.

Suzuki, 51, burst onto the major league scene in 2001 with the Seattle Mariners as the first position player from Japan and went on to win both the American League MVP and Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Awards in the same season, a feat accomplished by only one other player, Fred Lynn of the Boston Red Sox in 1975. Over a 19-season career that included time with the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins, Suzuki knocked out 3,089 hits in becoming the first player with 10 consecutive seasons of 200-plus hits, including a record 262 in 2004, a year in which he won his second batting title at .372. His first came in his rookie year when he hit .350 with 242 hits and 56 of his career 509 stolen bases.

Among other hardware Suzuki collected were 10 straight Gold Glove Awards for fielding, three Silver Slugger Awards for batting and 10 All-Star Game selections, including nine starts. He was the All-Star Game MVP in 2007 at San Francisco. Ichiro led the AL in games played four times, at-bats eight times, hits seven times, singles 10 times and intentional walks three times. Defensively, he led AL right fielders in putouts seven times, fielding percentage four times and once as a center fielder and assists twice as a right fielder. Including his totals with the Orix Blue Wave in Japan’s Pacific League, Ichiro amassed 4,367 career hits over 28 seasons.

Sabathia, 44, began his 19-season career in Cleveland as the runner-up to Suzuki for the AL Rookie of the Year Award in 2001 and went on to post a 251-161 record with a 3.74 earned run average and 3,093 strikeouts – 18th all-time and third among left-handers behind Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton. Sabathia won the AL Cy Young Award in 2007. A year later, a mid-season trade to Milwaukee resulted in his finishing sixth in National League MVP voting after going 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA and seven complete games, including three shutouts, in 17 starts for the Brewers. The next year, he anchored the Yankees’ staff enroute to a World Series title and was the 2009 AL Championship Series MVP (2-0, 1.13 ERA). Sabathia is one of only six pitchers in history with at least 250 victories, a .600 winning percentage and 3,000 strikeouts.

Over 16 seasons with the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves, Wagner, 53, had a 47-40 record with 422 saves, the eighth-highest career total in history and the second highest among left-handers, just two saves behind John Franco. Wagner’s 2.31 career ERA is the lowest among retired left-handed pitchers with at least 500 innings pitched in the live-ball era (post 1920). His career walks-plus-hits-per-innings-pitched ratio (WHIP) of 0.998 is lowest among all retired relievers with at least 700 innings pitched.

The only other players to gain mention on more than half the ballots were outfielders Carlos Beltrán with 277 votes (70.3) and Andruw Jones with 261 (66.2).

Candidates may remain on the BBWAA ballot for up to 10 years provided they are listed on at least five percent of ballots cast. There are 15 players from this year’s ballot who will be eligible again for 2025, including two of the 14 first-year candidates: pitcher Félix Hernández with 81 votes (20.6) and second baseman Dustin Pedroia with 47 (11.9).

The Hall of Fame has 351 elected members, including 278 players, of whom 142 have come through the BBWAA ballot. The elections of Suzuki and Sabathia bring to 62 the total of players elected in their first year of eligibility by the BBWAA. This year marked the 11th time the BBWAA honored three players in an election and the second year in a row.

The average ballot in the 2025 election contained 6.77 names, down from 7.00 last year, with 24.9 percent of the voters using all 10 slots, up from 24.4 a year ago. The total of ballots cast marked a 98.5-percent return rate of the 400 ballots mailed to voters. There were no blank ballots submitted.
