Dolphins waive Shaquil Barrett; LB can play if unclaimed

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins waived Shaquil Barrett on Thursday, roughly a month after the linebacker ended his brief retirement in November.

Barrett signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Dolphins this offseason but announced his retirement in July, the day before the team opened training camp. He filed for reinstatement in November, but the Dolphins declined to activate him, despite missing their top two pass rushers, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb.

Barrett’s decision to unretire came days before the deadline to do so in Week 13, and Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel called the team’s decision “a numbers game.”

“In just talking with [Dolphins general manager] Chris [Grier] where our roster is at and the players that have earned the right to be on it,” McDaniel said in November. “It is just a numbers game in the NFL, so the timing I don’t think was necessarily ideal.”

Barrett, 32, can play again this season if he clears waivers Friday. If another team claims him, he would be ineligible to play the rest of this season.

Barrett’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, thanked the team for its most recent decision.

“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Hopefully, he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”

McDaniel announced Tuesday that the Dolphins would not activate Chubb from the physically unable to perform list, reverting the two-time Pro Bowler back to the reserve list for the remainder of the season.

Rookie Chop Robinson has played well in their stead and is 2.5 sacks from tying Phillips’ rookie franchise record set in 2021.

The Dolphins play the Cleveland Browns in Week 17. A loss or a Denver Broncos win would eliminate them from playoff contention.

The Miami Dolphins have decided to waive linebacker Shaquil Barrett, opening up the opportunity for him to be claimed by another team. Despite being cut from the Dolphins roster, Barrett is still eligible to play this season if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Barrett, who signed with the Dolphins earlier this year, has shown great potential and talent during his time with the team. However, with the roster changes and adjustments being made, the Dolphins have made the tough decision to part ways with the linebacker.

It will be interesting to see if any other teams will take a chance on Barrett and claim him off waivers. With his skills and abilities on the field, there is a good chance that he will find a new home in the NFL soon.

Stay tuned for updates on Shaquil Barrett’s future in the league as the waiver process unfolds.

The Miami Dolphins have parted ways with Shaq Barrett. The team is waiving the former Pro Bowl pass rusher from the reserve/retired list on Friday, according to ESPN. After announcing his retirement from the NFL back in July, the two-time Super Bowl champion applied for reinstatement from the league in late November to pursue a comeback. However, the Dolphins elected not to activate Barrett on their roster, which ultimately led to this departure.

Barrett will be subject to waivers, which adds an interesting wrinkle to his hopes to play this season. If another team claims him, he will be ineligible to play for the rest of the year. However, if he clears waivers on Friday, he will be free to sign with whatever team he wants/will have him.

“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” Drew Rosenhaus, Barrett’s agent, said in a statement to ESPN. “Hopefully, he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”

Under the assumption the 32-year-old clears waivers, it will be fascinating to see where he ends up. Over the summer, Barrett made headlines on the  “Up & Adams” show, where he indicated that the only team he’d come out of retirement for would be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who he played five seasons with from 2019-2023.

However, the Buccaneers are currently outside of the playoff picture at 8-7 and the No. 8 seed in the conference. Tampa Bay’s easiest path to the playoffs is simply winning out and having the Atlanta Falcons lose one of their final two games of the year. That would thrust the Bucs into first place in the NFC South and stamp their ticket into the playoffs. So, if Barrett still has eyes for a Buccaneers reunion, it could be worth waiting to see how Week 17 unfolds because if Tampa Bay is upset by Carolina, his comeback will have lasted just over a week.

If he goes unclaimed, Barrett will be eligible to play Week 18 and the playoffs.

In 131 regular season games, Barrett has posted 400 total tackles and 59 career sacks. Last season, he played 16 games for the Buccaneers and had 52 tackles to go with 4.5 sacks.

The Miami Dolphins have reportedly decided to waive former Pro Bowl pass rusher Shaq Barrett, according to a recent report. Barrett, who had previously unretired in hopes of making a comeback with the Dolphins, will now be looking for a new team to continue his NFL career.

Barrett, who had a standout season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019, recording 19.5 sacks and earning his first Pro Bowl selection, had high hopes of making an impact with the Dolphins. However, it appears that the team has decided to part ways with the veteran linebacker.

It remains to be seen where Barrett will land next, but there is no doubt that there will be plenty of interest in the talented pass rusher. Despite his brief stint with the Dolphins, Barrett has proven himself to be a valuable asset on defense and could be a key addition for any team in need of a dynamic edge rusher.

As Barrett looks to find a new team, fans will be eagerly awaiting news of his next destination and hoping that he can continue to make an impact in the NFL. Stay tuned for updates on Shaq Barrett’s future in the league.

Dolphins will waive Shaq Barrett on Thursday

Veteran edge rusher Shaq Barrett could return to the field before the 2024 season is over.

Barrett’s agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN that the Dolphins have agreed to waive Barrett. Barrett retired ahead of the season, but expressed interest in returning to action late last month. The Dolphins opted not to activate him or release him at that point, but have changed course now and Barrett will be eligible to play in Week 18 and the postseason if he clears waivers and signs with another team. If he’s claimed, he will not be able to play as he would remain on the reserve/retired list.

“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” Rosenhaus said. “Hopefully he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”

Barrett had 4.5 sacks for the Buccaneers last season and has 59 sacks for his career, so he could provide a boost to the pass rush of a team headed for the playoffs. That might be enough of a reason for another contender without that need to claim him and keep him from returning to the field, so it will be interesting to see how things play out.

Breaking News: Dolphins will waive Shaq Barrett on Thursday

In a surprising move, the Miami Dolphins have announced that they will be waiving linebacker Shaq Barrett on Thursday. Barrett, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, has struggled to make an impact on the field and has seen limited playing time in recent weeks.

The decision to waive Barrett comes as a shock to many fans and analysts, as he was expected to be a key contributor to the Dolphins’ defense this season. However, with the team struggling to find success on the field, it appears that the coaching staff has decided to move on from the underperforming linebacker.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Barrett, but it is clear that his time in Miami has come to an end. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Dolphins To Waive Shaq Barrett From Reserve/Retired List

Dolphins To Waive Shaq Barrett From Reserve/Retired List

Shaq Barrett‘s 2024 has been rather complicated. He has been involved in a few transactions despite not playing this season. After Barrett unretired, he did not factor into the Dolphins’ plans due an NFL deadline.

The Dolphins did not activate Barrett from the reserve/retired list by a late-November deadline that would have allowed him to play this season. Barrett informed the team he wished to come back, after initially retiring, but the Dolphins did not greenlight that opportunity. They are now waiving Barrett from their reserve/retired list, per ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.

Since we are well past the trade deadline, all vested veterans released hit waivers. Barrett can play in 2024 if he clears waivers, but Schefter adds his contract being claimed would keep him on the reserve/retired list for the rest of the season. A team could make a play to effectively block a rival from adding the veteran edge rusher, but Barrett has a path to free agency and a potential role somewhere else soon.

The former NFL sack leader informed the Dolphins in November he wished to play this season, doing so after telling the team he was done just before training camp. Miami had signed Barrett in March, stepping in after the former Super Bowl starter became a Tampa Bay cap casualty. Barrett, 32, would have been on track to help the Dolphins fill their Bradley Chubb void. But his retirement changed those plans. Despite applying for reinstatement, Barrett did not end up being activated by the Dolphins in time to help them this season.

Barrett signed a one-year, $7MM deal with the Dolphins. The terms of that contract would make it a slight surprise if he is claimed. The Dolphins have effectively done right by Barrett, who retired after 10 NFL seasons in July. He could soon catch on with a contender that is attempting to make a Super Bowl push. A team like the Lions, who have dealt with numerous defensive injuries since Aidan Hutchinson went down, would come to mind as a possible suitor. They probably would not be the only team to consider the ex-Bucs starter if he clears waivers.

A rotational role would likely be Barrett’s best-case scenario if he hits free agency and signs with a team soon after. The regular season is coming to a close, and the former Broncos UDFA has not shown top form since an Achilles tear ended his 2022 season. Barrett came back from the injury last season but finished with just 4.5 sacks — his lowest full-season total during his Tampa Bay tenure — and nine QB hits. The Bucs designated him a post-June 1 cut soon after. That said, Barrett is now more than two years removed from that Achilles setback, potentially helping his sales pitch to teams.

Barrett played the lead role for a Bucs defense that dominated the high-scoring Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, keying a second-half onslaught. Tampa Bay then signed off on a four-year, $72MM deal to retain him. Barrett, who led the league with 19.5 sacks in 2019 en route to a 2020 franchise tag, registered 10 sacks in 2021 and made the Pro Bowl. He will become a free agent if unclaimed by 3pm CT Friday.

The Miami Dolphins have announced that they will be waiving linebacker Shaq Barrett from the reserve/retired list. Barrett, who announced his retirement earlier this year, has decided to make a comeback to the NFL and the Dolphins have decided to release him from his retirement status.

Barrett, a former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, will now be free to sign with any team in the league as he looks to continue his career. The Dolphins have expressed their gratitude for Barrett’s time with the team and wish him the best in his future endeavors.
