Louisville HC Pat Kelsey Previews Wake Forest
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville men’s basketball program is one of the hottest teams in college basketball right now.
After starting the season at 6-5, the Cardinals and first-year head coach Pat Kelsey have fired off nine wins in a row. Not only is this UofL’s longest winning streak in five years, they’re now ranked for the first time in four years, and still hold second place in the ACC standings.
“We make a point every single day to make the next thing we do the most important thing, and we stack that
on top of each other again and again and again and again,” head coach Pat Kelsey said. “I’m a big believer that that’s how you create and have consistent results, not guaranteed results, but consistent results.”After having a week off from their last game at SMU, Louisville will be back in action and hosting Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are also one of the better teams in the ACC, previously winning six-in-a-row before narrowly falling to Duke this past Saturday.
“This is one of the best teams in our league, and it’s obvious,” Kelsey said of Wake Forest. “It jumps out on tape just how talented they are. They have an older veteran team, they have a First-Team All-Conference player, and probably have another one as well.”
Prior to their matchup with the Demon Deacons, Kelsey, took time to meet with the media on the weekly ACC Coaches Conference Call. He discussed the previous game at SMU, previewed the upcoming showdown vs. Wake Forest, and more.

Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey is gearing up for a matchup against Wake Forest, and he’s ready to face the challenge head-on. In a recent press conference, Kelsey shared his thoughts on the upcoming game and what the team needs to do to come out on top.“We know that Wake Forest is a tough opponent, but we’re prepared and focused on executing our game plan,” Kelsey said. “We have been working hard in practice to fine-tune our strategies and make sure we are ready for whatever they throw at us.”
Kelsey emphasized the importance of strong defense and disciplined offense in order to secure a victory against Wake Forest. He also praised the team’s resilience and determination, stating that they are ready to compete at a high level.
“We have a talented group of players who are hungry for success,” Kelsey added. “I have full confidence in their abilities and know that they will give it their all on the court.”
As the game approaches, Louisville fans can expect an intense and competitive matchup between the Cardinals and Wake Forest. With Kelsey at the helm, the team is poised to put on a show and come out victorious.
Stay tuned for more updates on Louisville basketball and their journey to success under Coach Kelsey’s leadership.

Wake Forest at Louisville Odds, Picks and PredictionsThe Wake Forest Demon Deacons will be facing off against the Louisville Cardinals in what is sure to be an exciting college football matchup. Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs this season, but they will be looking to come out on top in this crucial game.
The odds for this game are currently in favor of Louisville, with the Cardinals being listed as 6.5-point favorites. The over/under for the game is set at 57.5 points, indicating that oddsmakers are expecting a relatively high-scoring affair.
When it comes to picks and predictions, it’s always tough to predict the outcome of a college football game. However, based on recent performances and overall team strength, it seems like Louisville may have the edge in this matchup. The Cardinals have a potent offense led by quarterback Malik Cunningham, who has been putting up big numbers all season long.
On the other hand, Wake Forest has been solid on both sides of the ball and should not be underestimated. Their defense has been impressive at times, and their offense is capable of putting up points in a hurry.
In the end, it could come down to which team makes fewer mistakes and capitalizes on their opportunities. While Louisville may have the slight edge, this game could easily go either way.
Overall, this game is shaping up to be a close and competitive battle between two evenly matched teams. It should be a thrilling game to watch for college football fans, and one that could potentially have playoff implications for both teams.

About Wake Forest:
If you just looked at Wake Forest’s computer rankings, you’d probably think the Demon Deacons were hovering close to .500 or were a team with a handful of very bad defeats and zero wins to write home about. You’d be wrong.
Wake Forest enters Tuesday night’s game against Louisville just one game behind the Cardinals in the ACC standings. Their five losses have all come against teams currently projected to make the NCAA tournament, with three of those coming against teams ranked in the top 15. Their non-conference season saw them score a Quad-I neutral court victory over Michigan and a solid neutral court victory over Minnesota.
So why does this Wake team enter Tuesday night ranked No. 71 in the NET Rankings and No. 73 on Ken Pom? The answer lies with their buy games.
Every power conference team schedules a handful of “buy games” against teams they are expected to beat. These teams usually aren’t great, but the teams Wake Forest scheduled this season were true bottom of the barrel squads. The Demon Deacons played five teams — Coppin State (No. 362), North Carolina A&T (No. 328), USC Upstate (No. 345), Western Carolina (No. 349) and Detroit Mercy (No. 332) — that rank in the bottom 5% of all 364 teams that play Division-I men’s college basketball. That is a surefire way to tank your standing in pretty much every predictive metric that exists.
The issue has frustrated both head coach Steve Forbes and the Wake Forest fan base to no end for weeks, but the reality is that the complaining isn’t going to change anything. The Demon Deacons need to stack Quad-I wins in a hurry, and they’ve only got two or three more opportunities to make that happen before it’s time for the ACC tournament. After losing a competitive game against Duke over the weekend, expect them to treat Tuesday night’s contest inside the Yum Center like it’s an elimination game.
Wake will come out swinging in this one, and they pack a serious enough punch to drop the Cards if they aren’t prepared to hit back effectively.
Unlike the last couple of years, the Deacons are a team that have relied more on their defense than their offense. Wake enters Tuesday night ranked 21st in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency. They lead the ACC in steals, averaging 7.78 per league contest, and have the best turnover margin (+3.44), forcing conference opponents into an average of 14 turnovers a game. In league games, ACC opponents are shooting just 39.5 percent from the field and 30.7 percent from the field against Wake.
Because of the shift in identity, Forbes has opted to slow things down tremendously this season. Wake will no longer look to get up and down and generate a ton of looks in transition the way they did last season. Instead, they’re playing at just the 218th fastest-pace in Division-I. They want a deliberate game, and they will do everything in their power to force Louisville into playing a mostly halfcourt game.
While his outside shooting numbers have dipped significantly this season, Hunter Sallis is once again one of the top scorers in the ACC, averaging 18.9 ppg. Arguably the league’s biggest breakout star last season, the 6’5 Sallis will be the latest star that Chucky Hepburn and Terrence Edwards will be tasked with slowing down. He’ll take several outside shots despite shooting the three at a 29.8 percent clip, but he’s most dangerous playing downhill and either drawing fouls or getting all the way to the rim.
Another familiar face, 6’4 senior guard Cam Hildreth, is also back and causing problems for Wake. The three-year starter has also seen his three-point shooting percentage dip this season, but he’s a creative scorer who has netted 20 or more points in three of Wake’s last five games. He also still has the ability to get hot from deep, as he showcased with a 6-of-8 performance from beyond the arc earlier this year against Miami.
Appalachian State transfer Tre’Von Spillers and second-year Deac Efton Reid are the team’s interior threats and the final two members of Wake Forest’s core four. Spillers is a nightly double-double threat who also leads the ACC in blocked shots. Reid is four inches taller at 7’0, and is less of an offensive threat but also an elite rim protector. The Cards simply cannot get caught over-penetrating against this frontcourt.
To sum up, Wake is very good at blocking shots, forcing turnovers, defending the perimeter, converting at the free-throw line and scoring around the rim. They struggle mightily with three-point shooting (353rd in the country), keeping opposing teams off the free-throw line, and despite having great size on the interior, they aren’t a terrific rebounding team.
Given all of the circumstances going into this one, I’ll be surprised if it isn’t a battle.
Notable:
—Louisville will wear uniforms that honor the Dirt Bowl, a summer tournament that is integral in the history of basketball in the city. It’s the second time U of L has worn the jerseys, and the first time the Cardinals have worn the gray colorway.
—Louisville has won nine consecutive games for the first time since a 10-game winning streak in 2020 that lasted from Jan. 7-Feb. 8 of that year.
—Louisville has won eight consecutive ACC games for the first time since that same 10-game winning streak in 2020.
—Wake Forest had never won consecutive games over Louisville before its current three-game winning streak in the series.
—Louisville is ranked in both major top 25 polls (No. 21 in AP, No. 22 in coaches) for the first time since the final week of January, 2021.
—Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes is 3-2 in games against Louisville, and currently riding a three-game winning streak.
—Wake Forest is 3-3 in true road games so far this season, but 3-1 in ACC road games.
—Wake has won three straight road games for the first time since the 2003-04 season. A win Tuesday would mark the first time Wake has won four straight ACC road games since the 1996-97 season.
—Louisville should have beaten Wake Forest in the 1996 Sweet 16, but star center Tim Duncan both fouled out and walked near the end of the contest, but neither were called.
—Louisville is 8-3 in home games so far this season, and 3-1 in ACC home games.
—Chucky Hepburn is 14th in the country in total steals with 49, and 13th in the country in steals per game at 2.45.
—Reyne Smith is leading the country in made three-pointers per game (3.90), is second in total made three-pointers (78), and fourth in total three-point attempts (191).
—James Scott is second in the country and first in the ACC in dunks with 46.
—Louisville is 14-0 over the past 10 seasons when limiting opponents to no more than one three-point field goal.
—Since 2004, Louisville is 133-0 when leading by more than 10 points at halftime.
—Louisville is 115-0 all-time when scoring 100 or more points in non-overtime games.
—Louisville has won 163 consecutive games when holding an opponent under 50 points.
Ken Pomeroy Prediction: Louisville 74, Wake Forest 64

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — What do you do when nothing is working?
Something you haven’t done all season.
Which, in Duke’s case, means playing zone defense. Per Synergy Basketball, entering Saturday’s road test at Wake Forest, the Blue Devils had played zone a whopping three possessions all season — or less than 1 percent of their total defensive looks. So, practically never. Asked after the game whether he’d ever played zone before, freshman Cooper Flagg smirked, then offered a succinct “nope.”
But in the second half of Duke’s eventual 63-56 win, Jon Scheyer broke the glass — because, yes, it was an emergency. After completely stifling Wake Forest’s offense in the first half, holding the Demon Deacons to a measly 22 points, Duke entered the break with a 13-point cushion. Scheyer knew, though, that level of defensive dominance — even from a team ranked second nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, per KenPom — probably wasn’t going to hold. “It’s not quite sustainable,” Scheyer said after the game. “They’re eventually going to hit some shots.”
What he couldn’t have anticipated, though, was Wake Forest playing like a team possessed after halftime. Steve Forbes’ squad didn’t just make some shots; it ripped off a 23-4 run that completely changed the tide of the game, sending the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum into a black-and-yellow frenzy in the process. Scheyer ultimately called timeout with just under 10 minutes to play, once Wake Forest extended its lead to 6 — the first time Duke had trailed in a second half in almost six weeks, since it beat Louisville on Dec. 8.
And in that huddle, Scheyer told his players he was pulling the parachute cord. Go zone.
“We’ve kept it in our back pocket just in case,” Scheyer said, “and it’s good to have a curveball.”
Last season, when Duke lost in this very building, it tried that same tactic — but when Wake Forest guard Cam Hildreth drained a 3-pointer on the Blue Devils’ first zone possession, Scheyer immediately pulled out of it.
This time around, though? Different story. Wake Forest came down the court, made five lackluster passes around the perimeter, and settled for a long Hunter Sallis 3-pointer … which he air-balled:
On Duke’s second zone possession, Wake Forest freshman Juke Harris took a free-throw jumper, which rattled around before finally falling in good. Fine. Scheyer could’ve pulled the plug then, but he stuck with it, undeterred — and good thing he did. On Wake’s third crack at the zone, it was more of the same. Five stinking perimeter passes, and another long-range, no-chance 3:
Next possession, Harris took another free-throw jumper, which clanked off the rim again — except this time, it didn’t fall in good:
Altogether, Duke only played zone for 4:16, but those few minutes were the difference. The Demon Deacons scored only 11 points the rest of the game once Duke went zone, compared with 23 in the 12 minutes prior. And on the flip side, finally getting some stops restored some of Duke’s sagging offensive confidence. Wake Forest scored only on one of six possessions that Duke played zone, and Duke scored on six consecutive possessions during the same stretch. Voilà: a 12-2 run, and a lead restored.
“Wasn’t completely comfortable with that,” Kon Knueppel said of Duke’s zone, “but we figured it out. Found a way.”
Duke did eventually go back to man, with just under four minutes to play, but it had built a 5-point lead by then. And though Wake Forest hung around, keeping it a two-possession game, ultimately Tyrese Proctor — who started the game 1-for-11 overall and 0-for-6 from 3 — canned a 3-pointer with 2:18 left to push the lead back to 8.
Ballgame.
“Tyrese, he couldn’t throw a pea in the ocean,” Knueppel said, “but I told him right after the game, he hit the biggest one. That’s all that matters.”
For Duke, the benefits from the Wake Forest win are twofold. For one, now Scheyer has the zone as another tool in his defensive toolbox — not something to be used with regularity, of course, but as a change of pace in situations like Saturday’s. Especially as the Blue Devils continue growing defensively — making Khaman Maluach more comfortable switching on the perimeter and getting Maliq Brown back from injury — there’s no telling how valuable that zone might be down the road.
But perhaps even more valuable was the fact that, finally, for the first time since Louisville, Duke played a competitive basketball game. There are only so many of those to go around in the ACC this season, as the Blue Devils’ sterling 9-0 league record makes clear. (Duke’s odds of going undefeated in conference play after Saturday, by the way? According to KenPom, 39.1 percent.) Scheyer’s team had won its last seven league games by an average of 24.4 points, with a double-digit halftime lead becoming almost the standard.
So to finally face some adversity? To be down with under 10 minutes to play?
“When we were down 6, like, this is where we want to be,” Scheyer said. “We have to be in these situations.”
Again, there’s a reason Scheyer scheduled Duke’s nonconference slate the way he did, jam-packed with plenty of big-time matchups — just in case the ACC turned out how it has. It’s also why he made the unconventional decision to play a nonleague game in late February — versus Illinois in Madison Square Garden — to ensure Duke had moments of true resistance.
Saturday’s was one of those, though. And though there might be more to come — at Clemson and North Carolina, specifically — Duke’s response versus Wake Forest might be a prescient indicator of how the rest of the Blue Devils’ ACC slate might go.
So, no, nothing was working.
But as has been the case for Duke all season, that’s only a temporary affliction.

Duke basketball zone helps Blue Devils avoid upset at Wake Forest
WINSTON-SALEM — Seated on the dais inside the Gene Overby press room at Joel Coliseum, Duke coach Jon Scheyer turned to Cooper Flagg and asked him a question.
“Have you ever played zone?” Scheyer said after Duke basketball’s 63-56 win at Wake Forest.
“Nope,” Flagg said.
Well, Flagg and the second-ranked Blue Devils (17-2, 9-0 ACC) played zone against the Demon Deacons (15-5, 7-2).
Trailing by six points midway through the second half, Duke had to try something — anything — in an attempt to slow down the surging Demon Deacons and quiet a riled up sea of tie-dyed shirts.

HOW DUKE BEAT WF:Cooper Flagg, Duke basketball avoid court-storming scenario with win at Wake Forest
So, Duke went to a 2-3 zone defense, and it worked.
“We haven’t played it. We’ve played it one possession all year,” Scheyer said. “We’ve kept it in our back pocket, just in case. It’s good to have a curveball, it just is.”
Wake Forest went 1-for-6 shooting when the Blue Devils were in their zone, with the lone make coming on a Juke Harris free-throw-line jumper that hit several parts of the rim before falling through the net.
In that stretch, Duke had a 12-2 run, with six of those points coming from Flagg.
“We’ll have it in our back pocket. But I give these guys credit, you still have to make it work,” Scheyer said. “We haven’t practiced it too much, but we’ve had it in our back pocket, just in case. The coaching staff said, ‘Let’s do it,’ and I thought it was great timing to go to the zone.”
Scheyer said going to a zone “was a feeling for this game,” something the Blue Devils practiced later in the week leading up to Saturday.
Like Flagg, fellow freshman Kon Knueppel “never played zone” in high school. Throughout this season at Duke, Knueppel said the Blue Devils have practiced it “sparingly, here and there, not crazy often. But we did this week.”
During those tense moments in the second half, Flagg and Knueppel said Purdue transfer Mason Gillis and junior guard Tyrese Proctor were the calming voices in Duke’s tight huddles.
Duke missed its first 13 shots of the second half, going 1 of 19 during a stretch as Wake Forest surged ahead with a 23-4 run to take a six-point lead.
Once Duke mixed in some zone, in the final seven minutes, the Blue Devils responded to their challenging stretch with a 17-4 run and Wake Forest made three shots the rest of the way. The Demon Deacons missed six shots in a row from just under the 7-minute mark until there were 41 seconds left in the game.
Duke had a season-low point total, more turnovers (16) than assists (14) and saw its primary centers — Khaman Maluach and Patrick Ngongba — on the bench in foul trouble.
The Blue Devils won anyway.
“Coach (Scheyer) even said in the locker room, we didn’t throw away the game, we didn’t put our heads down,” said Gillis, who had 11 points and six rebounds.
“We were able to look each other in the eye and say, ‘We got this, we’re gonna win the game.’ We went out there and executed.”
The zone, which Gillis called a “wrinkle,” is the type of tweak that’s often required in a grind-it-out game.
It’s a tool and trick that could help the Blue Devils in the NCAA Tournament.
“Everything we’re doing right now, we’re getting ready for March,” said Gillis, who has played more games (151) than anyone on Duke’s roster.
“That was a March-style game right there.”

Duke survives scare at Wake Forest with switch to zone
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Duke faced a challenge against Wake Forest unlike anything it has seen in nearly three months, and the second-ranked Blue Devils responded with something they hadn’t done all season.
Duke erased a six-point second-half deficit after switching to a 2-3 zone defense over the final nine minutes and utterly suffocated the Demon Deacons’ scorers to escape with a 63-56 win, its closest result since Dec. 5 and only the third single-digit margin in the Blue Devils’ current 13-game winning streak.
“We’ve kept it in our back pocket just in case,” Duke coach Jon Scheyer said. “It’s good to have a curveball, and even if it’s maybe not the best zone in the world, we were just trying to stand them up a little bit, and sometimes late in a game, that’s what it can do. I give these guys credit because you still have to make it work, and we haven’t practiced it too much.”
Duke led by 13 at the half, but the Blue Devils were ice cold from the field when the second half began, and Wake found a groove running a pick-and-roll, going on a 23-4 run to go up six with 9:58 to play.
Duke then took a timeout, and when the Blue Devils returned to the court, it was with a new defensive approach.
Scheyer said Duke had run a zone for exactly one possession all season, and until late last week, hadn’t practiced it often either. But after a failed attempt to slow Wake with the zone in a game last season, Scheyer went to his “curveball” once more.
The Duke D offered nothing easy for Wake after the defensive switch, outscoring the Deacons 24-11 the rest of the way. Wake was 2-for-10 — including a stretch of eight straight misses — from the field after Duke switched to the zone.
At the podium for a postgame news conference, Scheyer smiled at star freshman Cooper Flagg and quipped, “Have you ever played zone?”
“Never,” Flagg replied with a laugh.
The joke being there’s virtually nothing Flagg isn’t good at — even if it’s not a standard part of his repertoire.
Wake Forest coach Steve Forbes was asked his impressions of Flagg after seeing him in person.
“Generational,” Forbes said before running through a who’s who of stars he has coached against in his career, including Kawhi Leonard, Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant. “He’s at that level. He’s going to play in the NBA for a long time.”
Scheyer lamented Duke’s sluggish offense — the 63 points was a season low — but Flagg was still exceptional, finishing with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
“We haven’t been in a ton of those positions,” Flagg said. “It was a big opportunity for us to show we can stay composed even when a team makes a run, and stay level-headed.”
But if Saturday represented a struggle for a Duke team on a seemingly flawless roll, Scheyer said he had no regrets.
“You have to win one of these games in the tournament, in ACC play — it’s part of it,” Scheyer said. “We’ve earned it with how we’ve clicked on offense, but it’s only a matter of time [before there’s a close game.] It’s huge we could get a win and find a way without having our best stuff.”
In a thrilling ACC matchup, the Duke Blue Devils narrowly escaped with a victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons after making a crucial defensive adjustment. Duke, known for their man-to-man defense, made a bold move to switch to a zone defense in the second half, which ultimately proved to be the difference maker in the game. The Demon Deacons came out firing on all cylinders, knocking down three-pointers and attacking the paint with ease in the first half. Duke struggled to contain Wake Forest’s offensive firepower, falling behind by double digits early on. However, the switch to a zone defense in the second half completely disrupted Wake Forest’s rhythm and forced them into difficult shots.
Led by their star players, Duke was able to mount a comeback and eventually secure a hard-fought victory. The adjustment to a zone defense not only slowed down Wake Forest’s offense but also allowed Duke to create turnovers and generate easy scoring opportunities in transition.
This game serves as a reminder of the importance of in-game adjustments and the impact they can have on the outcome of a game. Duke’s willingness to adapt and try something new ultimately saved them from a potential upset at the hands of Wake Forest. As they continue their march towards the postseason, the Blue Devils will look to build on this win and continue to fine-tune their defensive strategies for future matchups.
