What to Know
Hokies fans going to Saturday’s game might be disappointed given the experts’ predictions. They and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons will face off in an ACC battle at 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Wednesday, Va. Tech narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past North Carolina State 79-76. The Hokies were down 49-34 with 18:10 left in the second half but they still came back for the handy three-point win.
Among those leading the charge was Toibu Lawal, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 11 rebounds. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in offensive rebounds (six). Jaden Schutt was another key player, going 6 for 10 en route to 17 points plus five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest came tearing into Wednesday’s game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Cardinal by a score of 80-67.
Wake Forest’s success was spearheaded by the efforts of Hunter Sallis, who went 12 for 17 en route to 30 points, and Tre’Von Spillers, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds. Sallis’ evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least 22.4 points.
Va. Tech pushed their record up to 8-9 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Wake Forest, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.
The two teams pleased both fans and bettors in their last matchups by winning and covering the spread. Looking forward, Wake Forest is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by four points. They might be worth a quick bet since they’re sitting on a five game streak of covering the spread when expected to win.

Wake Forest Basketball at Virginia Tech Preview
Wake Forest Basketball has yet another Saturday ACC matchup coming as the Deacs head to Blacksburg, VA to face off against the Virginia Tech Hokies at 2 P.M., airing on ACC Network. It’s the final of a series of games the Deacs needed to win to keep their tournament hopes alive, before a gauntlet of opportunities in the coming weeks.
Wake Forest sits at 13-4 and 5-1 in ACC play for the first time since the 1996-97 season after taking down Stanford at the Joel on Wednesday 80-67, behind yet another dominant performance from Hunter Sallis with 30 points, and a double-double from Tre’Von Spillers.
The Deacs trail the all-time matchup 39-34, with the most recent installation being a loss last season in the Cassell Coliseum behind a 50-point second half from the Hokies and 26 points from Hunter Cattoor.
This year, Mike Young’s squad has struggled, sitting at 8-9 overall and 3-3 in ACC play. They have had their opportunities with a decent non-conference schedule, but in Quad I and II games, the Hokies sit at 0-8. They have won two straight with a victory on the road against California, and a home win where they erased a 15-point deficit to beat NC State.
Tech is led by VCU transfer forward Tobi Lawal, who leads the team averaging 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds a game. Lawal is a hyper-athletic big man that can also shoot it quite well from behind the arc, at 46.4% from three this year, admittedly with only 28 attempts. “I’ve never had one that jumped like that. He’s the best athlete I’ve had the opportunity to coach,” said Mike Young.
Senior forward Mylyjael Poteat is the other half of the Hokies’ impressive frontcourt, averaging 10.5 points and 3.8 rebounds a game, including a 25 point effort in the win over Miami. On the outside, Jaden Schutt is the sharpshooter for Mike Young’s offense. Schutt only averages 8.2 points a game, but just ask NC State what happens when he gets hot. Schutt hit some clutch key shots to down the Pack.
You’ll see the Hokies emphasize ball movement a lot more rather than trying to create shots for certain players. This team shares the wealth a lot. Their offense is all about drawing the attention of the defense and getting the ball to the next guy. It ends up with a lot of different players scoring as Tech runs a nine-man rotation, and they are second in the ACC in points from their bench. They’ve had seven different players lead the team in points this year, and ten players have double-digits multiple times this season.
But with that, comes the death of this Virginia Tech team: turnovers. The Hokies are dead last in the ACC in turnovers with 232 and second-to-last in turnover margin. Tobi Lowal, Brandon Rechsteiner, Ben Hammond, and Tyler Johnson have all had issues with it this year. Ty-Laur Johnson, Parker Friedrichsen, and Hunter Sallis bringing their A-game defensively could lead to some fast breaks for the Deacs in this game.
No ACC road game is easy, but this is a pretty important game for Wake Forest to win going into the gauntlet.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are set to face off against the Virginia Tech Hokies in a highly anticipated ACC matchup. Shohei Ohtani Makes Generous Donation in Wake of L.A. Fires
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani announced Thursday he is donating $500,000 in the wake of the fires plaguing Los Angeles county. Ohtani stated his donation will be helping firefighters, those who had to evacuate their homes, and animals in need.
“Our hearts go out to all the firefighters who continue to fight for us during the fires in LA,” Ohtani wrote on Instagram, translated to English. “We’ll be donating $500,000 to help those firefighters and those forced to live in shelter to help animals in need. The Los Angeles Dodgers are also working together with teams from other competitions to help sell T-shirts and more. I hope you all will consider this. I hope you recover soon.”
Ohtani additionally listed links for people to donate to, including the Fanatics’ “L.A. Strong” initiative, CA Wildlife Recovery, Pasadena Humane Society, Canine Rescue Club, and the L.A. Fire Department.
Ohtani’s post comes nine days after multiple fires initially broke out on Jan. 7 in Los Angeles county. The fires have claimed the lives of at least 27 people, and destroyed thousands of homes and buildings.
Along with Ohtani, Dodgers teammate Freddie Freeman and his wife, Chelsea, have also donated as fires wrecked havoc on the county. The Freemans donated $300,000 total, with $100,000 each going to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation., the Pasadena Fire Department and the Salvation Army

Sallis has 20, Harris 17, Wake Forest pulls away from NC State 77-59
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Hunter Sallis scored 20 points, Juke Harris added 17 off the bench and Wake Forest pulled away in the second half for a 77-59 win over N.C. State on Saturday.
Up four points about five minutes into the second half, Sallis scored six points, Efton Reid had a three-point play and Ty-Laur Johnson hit a 3-pointer in a 12-2 run that put the Demon Deacons on top 57-43. The Wolfpack never got back within single digits and Sallis hit a jumper with five minutes remain for the biggest lead at 73-51.
Tre’Von Spillers scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting for Wake Forest (11-4, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), which shot 58% in the second half and 55% for the game. Harris was 6-of-8 shooting.
Marcus Hill led N.C. State (8-6, 1-2) with 14 points. Dontgrez Styles added 11 points and Michael O’Connell had 10. The Wolfpack shot 48% in the first half and 33% in the second.
Wake Forest got off to a quick start with Harris and Sallis hitting back-to-back 3-pointers in a 9-0 run that made it 19-4. The Wolfpack climbed back into it with a 9-0 run, making it 30-28. Harris and Cameron Hildreth scored the last two baskets of the half to give the Demon Deacons a 38-32 lead.
Hill and Taylor opened the second half with layups to pull N.C. State back within two but a Spillers layup and Sallis 3 started the surge that had Wake Forest on top by 12 when Sallis made two free throws with 12:11 left in the game.
N.C. State is home against Notre Dame on Wednesday. Wake Forest goes to Miami on Saturday.

NC State clobbered at Wake Forest for second straight ACC loss
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — NC State fell behind by as much as 22 points in a 77-69 loss at Wake Forest to fall to 8-6 (1-2 ACC) on the season in Winston-Salem. Marcus Hill led the way with 14 points on 12 shots, but the Wolfpack shot 33 percent from the floor in the second half and lost the turnover battle, rebounding battle and had just two assists in the second half in a lopsided loss.
Here are the immediate takeaways from NC State’s first ACC game of the 2025 portion of the season in Winston-Salem against Wake Forest.
Slow Start in Each Half Dooms Pack
The Wolfpack did a lot of clawing back to make it a game at the end of each half, but trailed by double digits at the under-12 in each due to poor shooting and turnovers. In the first half, the Wolfpack only got off three shots in the first 5:55 of play due to four early turnovers that prevented it from getting into offensive sets. The Pack was able to take advantage of Hunter Sallis and Efton Reid both going to the bench with two fouls late, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit to go into the half down 38-32.
By the midway point of the second half, State already had 10 turnovers, which is more than it averages per game on the season at 9.8. The Pack was also shooting 5-of-17 as a team in the second half by that point, which led to a 14-point deficit with 9:02 remaining in the game. It didn’t help that Wake got an unbelievable effort from Sallis — who had 13 of his 20 points in the second half — and Juke Harris scoring 14 points in the first half, but the Pack’s shooting woes and early turnovers in each half were the tipping point.
Middlebrooks Does Little In Return
Not only did Ben Middlebrooks return to the court after missing Tuesday’s game against Virginia, he got the start along with Brandon Huntley-Hatfield. That was short lived, however, as Wake got out to an early lead and NC State went back to a smaller lineup and Middlebrooks was mostly ineffective outside of one first-half block.
He did very little in the second half, either, finishing with a grand total of four points on two missed shots on the floor and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Middlebrooks returned to the court late, missed a 3-pointer and was called for his fourth foul just before the under-4 media timeout. On a day where he finished with just one total rebound in more than 20 minutes played, it was not the return the Pack needed.
Half-Court Offensive Issues Continue
It’s been an issue all season long, but it was a glaring one for the Wolfpack on Saturday in Winston-Salem. The Wolfpack got 14 points off turnovers compared to 11 for Wake Forest and the fact that State once again got just two total assists in the second half for a second straight game proves how little the Pack is moving the ball in ACC play thus far.
State has talked about playing together, focusing on the little things and not allowing the ball to get stuck. But after fighting back late in the first half, all of those aspects were let downs for State as it watched a two-point deficit one minute into the second half dissipate into as much as a 22-point lead for the Deacs with 4:58 left to play. Shooting 33 percent — including 1-of-6 from behind the arc — with two assists to seven turnovers in the second half will do that to a team.
In a disappointing turn of events, the NC State Wolfpack suffered a clobbering defeat at the hands of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, marking their second consecutive ACC loss.The Wolfpack came into the game with high hopes of bouncing back from their previous loss, but they were unable to find their rhythm against a dominant Wake Forest team. The Demon Deacons’ offense was firing on all cylinders, while NC State struggled to keep up.
Despite their best efforts, the Wolfpack were unable to contain Wake Forest’s explosive offense and fell behind early in the game. Their defense also struggled to make stops, allowing the Demon Deacons to score at will.
This loss serves as a wake-up call for NC State, as they now find themselves on a two-game losing streak in conference play. They will need to regroup quickly and address their weaknesses if they hope to turn their season around.
It’s back to the drawing board for the Wolfpack as they look to bounce back from this tough defeat and get back on track in the ACC. Only time will tell if they can rise to the challenge and overcome this setback.
