Pack Tracks (via GoPack.com)
NC State dropped its final contest of the 2024 calendar year on Tuesday, falling at Virginia, 70-67, on New Year’s Eve.
– The game against the Cavaliers was a tale of two halves. In the first half, NC State shot 61.9 percent and made 6-of-11 three-pointers. The Pack assisted on 11 of its 13 first half field goals to build a 39-29 lead at the break. In the second half, Virginia shot 56.5 percent and made 7-of-13 three-point field goals. The Cavaliers assisted on 12 of their 13 field goals in the second half to overcome a 14-point NC State advantage to win.
– The Pack led 43-29 early in the second half when Virginia went on an extended 30-8 run to take the lead. UVA led by 12 points, 67-55, with five minutes to play, but the Pack held the Cavaliers without a field goal the rest of the game to close within three with 10 seconds to play.
– Jayden Taylor led the Pack in scoring for the second consecutive game, finishing with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting against Virginia. He also tied his career-high with five assists.
– Jayden Taylor made three of his six three-point attempts against Virginia and is now 8-of-13 (61.5%) from long range in his last three games. Taylor made 64 three-pointers and shot 36.4 percent from three-point last season, but had started this season by only shooting 25.9 percent (10-of-39) from three-point range in the Pack’s first 10 games.
– Brandon Huntley-Hatfield and Marcus Hill also reached double figures for the Pack with each scoring 12 points apiece. Huntley-Hatfield and Hill each have nine double-digit scoring games this season to tie for the most by an NC State player. Hill added a season-high eight rebounds in the loss to Virginia.
– Michael O’Connell now ranks second in the ACC and sixth in the NCAA with a 4.0 assist-to-turnover ratio this season. O’Connell finished last season third in the ACC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.54). His career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.14 is the 12th best active assist-to-turnover ratio in DI. O’Connell averages to play 30 minutes per game and is the Pack’s primary ball handler but has had one or fewer turnovers in 10 of 13 games this season.
Saturday Storylines
– Saturday will be Breon Pass’ 100th career college game. Pass can be considered a unicorn in the current college basketball era as he has never transferred, playing all four years at NC State. (He is one of nine scholarship upperclassmen on the Pack’s roster, but the only one who has played their entire collegiate career at NC State.) Pass’ patience has paid off as the veteran has carved out a role in NC State’s lineup this season. Pass is playing 16 minutes per game this season and has developed into a knock down shooter for the Pack. He is shooting 53.8 percent (14-of-26) on three-pointers this season and is 9-for-15 (60%) from long range in the last five games. Entering his senior season, Pass had only made multiple three-pointer twice in 86 career games, but he’s now made at least two three-pointers in 5 of 13 games this season.
– Pack Needs Ben Middlebrooks in the lineup. The senior forward missed the Virginia game on Tuesday after catching a stomach bug early on gameday morning in Charlottesville. Middlebrooks tried to warm up for the game, but got sick again and the coaching staff decided to have him sit out the game. Middlebrooks entered the game leading NC State in blocks (20 – 2nd in the ACC) and steals (15). He’s the only player in the ACC to have at least 15 steals and 20 blocks this season. Without Middlebrooks in the lineup against Virginia, NC State had zero blocks as the Cavaliers shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) on its two-point field goal attempts. The Pack also had just four steals against UVA, tied for its second-fewest in a game this season.
– Get to 70 points: NC State is 7-0 this season when it scores 70 or more points, but just 1-5 when it scores under 70 points. Dating to last season, NC State has won 15 straight games when it scores at least 70 points.
– Win the Paint, Win the Game? NC State is 8-1 this season when it scores more points in the paint than its opponent, but 0-4 when it ties or is outscored in the paint. The Pack is averaging 41.8 points in the paint in its eight wins, but just 25.8 points in the paint in its five losses.
– One of NC State’s calling cards in the Kevin Keatts era is turning opponent’s turnovers into points. In the Pack’s eight wins this season, it is averaging 20.6 points per game off opponents turnovers and has outscored the opponents in points off turnovers by 98 points. In the Pack’s five losses it averages just 8.2 points off opponent turnovers and has been outscored by its opponents in points off turnovers (43-to-39).
NC State series with Wake Forest
– Saturday will be the 257th all-time meeting between NC State and Wake Forest. NC State leads the all-time series, 147-109.
– Kevin Keatts is 10-4 against Wake Forest as head coach of NC State, including a 4-3 record in games played at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
– Last Meeting (February 10, 2024): Wake Forest scored the go-ahead bucket with 17 seconds left on its way to an 83-79 win inside LJVM Coliseum. The game was a nip-and-tuck affair that featured 15 ties and 12 lead changes. The final count was NC State with 16:19 of lead time, Wake Forest leading for 14:13 and the game was tied 9:25. The final 7:30 minutes of the game were all played at a margin of a single possession until Wake made two free throws with 1.7 seconds left to extend its lead to four points. DJ Horne led the Pack with 31 points.

#State #Wake #Forest #basketballWhat’s next for Pistons in the wake of Jaden Ivey’s leg injury?
The best season of Jaden Ivey’s young career came to an unfortunate halt on Wednesday. During the fourth quarter of the Detroit Pistons’ win over the Orlando Magic, Ivey sustained a broken left fibula after Cole Anthony collided with his leg while diving for a loose ball.
Ivey had successful surgery Thursday morning and will be re-evaluated by the team’s medical staff in four weeks, the Pistons announced. Durability was the third-year guard’s strong suit before this injury — he played 74 four games his rookie season and 77 games last season.
His absence will mean more than just a starting lineup change for J.B. Bickerstaff and his coaching staff. Bickerstaff’s entire rotation will need to be tinkered with to make up for Ivey’s lost production. More importantly, it’s a devastating injury to a player showing the potential this franchise saw when drafting him.
GO DEEPER
Pistons’ Ivey has successful leg surgery, to be re-evaluated in 4 weeks
Who replaces Ivey in the starting lineup?
When Ivey missed the Nov. 13 game against the Milwaukee Bucks, Malik Beasley and Ron Holland II started in place of him and Tim Hardaway Jr. (Ausar Thompson also was inactive for that game.) In the other two games Ivey missed, Beasley started the first and Thompson started the second.
Beasley is averaging 26.7 points on 44.3 percent shooting from the field and 45.8 percent from 3-point range, five rebounds and four assists per game in three contests without Ivey this season. Thompson is averaging 14 points on 47.8 percent from the field, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game in two outings without Ivey. As for Holland, the rookie posted 7.7 points on 52.9 percent from the field and 3.7 rebounds per game in his three contests without Ivey.
All who have started in Ivey’s absence this season have averaged better numbers than when Ivey was playing, although those stats have come from a small sample size.
Second-year guard Marcus Sasser, whose averages also are higher in games without Ivey this season, has a higher 3-point percentage than Ivey for his career. Sasser is a reliable shooter from deep, posting a career-best 39.6 percent from long range this year. He’s also averaging nearly a steal per game in 13.1 minutes per outing.
Wendell Moore Jr. also could see increased minutes. Moore is yet another player on this Detroit roster with better numbers when Ivey doesn’t play — which is much less about Ivey and more about what these players have been able to do with more opportunity than usual.
With the NBA’s trade deadline looming on Feb. 6, the Pistons’ outlook could also alter. As The Athletic’s John Hollinger pointed out last month, when Detroit waived Paul Reed before re-signing him, the Pistons had $14 million in cap space.
GO DEEPER
Hollinger’s Week That Was: Schröder trade thoughts + is Marquette’s Jones a lotto pick?
Trajan Langdon is in his first season as Detroit’s general manager and can bolster the Pistons’ guard rotation if he sees fit. Before his time as the New Orleans Pelicans general manager from 2019 to 2024, Langdon also worked in the front offices for the Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs.
In Langdon’s first season at the helm with the Pelicans, during the 2019-20 season, he agreed to a three-team trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers.
New Orleans received Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, De’Andre Hunter, Brandon Ingram, cash considerations, a 2022 first-round pick that ended up being Dyson Daniel, a 2023 first-round pick and a 2025 first-round pick. Langdon also acquired Trey Murphy III, who is in the midst of his best season, via trade a day before the 2022 deadline.
Other than the Davis blockbuster, Langdon has been more on the modest side when it comes to the trade deadline. But Langdon could target another guard to try filling the hole Ivey leaves.
Detroit (15-18) enters Friday ninth in the Eastern Conference, in the Play-In Tournament race and only 2.5 games out of a playoff spot. The Pistons will hope to weather the storm without Ivey for at least a couple of months, beginning with Friday’s home game against the Charlotte Hornets.

The Detroit Pistons suffered a major blow with the news of rookie guard Jaden Ivey’s leg injury. With Ivey expected to miss significant time, the team now faces the challenge of moving forward without one of their key young talents. So, what’s next for the Pistons in the wake of Ivey’s injury? The team will need to rely on their depth and versatility to fill the void left by Ivey’s absence. Players like Cade Cunningham, Killian Hayes, and Hamidou Diallo will need to step up and take on larger roles in the backcourt.
Additionally, the Pistons may need to explore possible roster moves or signings to bolster their guard rotation. Whether it’s promoting a player from the G League, signing a free agent, or making a trade, the front office will need to be proactive in finding ways to address Ivey’s absence.
Despite the setback, the Pistons have shown resilience and potential this season. With a strong coaching staff and a talented young core, Detroit has the pieces in place to weather this storm and continue their development. It will be a challenging road ahead, but the Pistons have the tools and mindset to overcome adversity and keep pushing forward.

Miami Heat v Houston Rockets Houston’s Amen Thompson and Miami’s Terry Rozier have been suspended, while two other players, as well as coach Ime Udoka, have been fined in the wake of the fight near the end of Miami’s win over Houston earlier this week, the league announced Tuesday.
Thompson has been suspended two games without pay — he instigated the incident by throwing the Heat’s Tyler Herro to the ground — and Miami’s Terry Rozier one game for escalating the event by jumping in and going after Thompson on the ground.
Rockets guard Jalen Green has been fined $35,000 and Miami’s Herro $25,000 for their roles in the fracas. However, the largest fine went to Houston coach Ime Udoka, $50,000, for “verbal abuse of a game official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his technical foul and ejection.”
All that was over this incident in the final minute of the Heat’s win on the Rockets’ home court this week.
After the game, Herro said, “Guess that’s what happens when someone’s scoring, throwing dimes, doing the whole thing. I’d get mad, too.” Udoka commented, “They were in each other’s faces, bumping chests a little bit. One guy is stronger than the other.” NBA Twitter tended to side with Udoka on that one, but Herro got the win and will take it.
The NBA has handed down suspensions and fines following the altercation between the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat on Thursday night. Rockets’ forward Amen Thompson and Heat’s guard Terry Rozier have been suspended for one game each for their role in the scuffle. In addition to Thompson and Rozier, three other players have been fined for their involvement in the incident. The league has not disclosed the amount of the fines, but it is believed to be in the range of $25,000 to $50,000.
The altercation occurred late in the fourth quarter of the game, with tensions running high between the two teams. Thompson and Rozier were both ejected from the game after exchanging heated words and shoving each other.
The suspensions and fines serve as a reminder that the NBA takes player conduct seriously and will not tolerate any form of violence or unsportsmanlike behavior on the court. Both Thompson and Rozier will sit out their team’s next game as a result of their actions, while the other three players involved will have to pay a financial penalty.
It is important for players to remember to keep their emotions in check and to always conduct themselves in a professional manner, both on and off the court. Hopefully, this incident will serve as a learning experience for all involved and lead to more respectful interactions between players in the future.

The Deacs have made the trip up to Syracuse, New York to take on the northernmost team in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Adrian Autry’s Syracuse Orange for their final matchup in 2024. The contest will tip at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 with television coverage on ESPN2 with announcers Doug Sherman and Wake Forest legend Randolph Childress. The month of December for the Deacs has been a combination of two promising performances against James Madison and Boston College sandwiched between extremely disappointing showings on the road against ranked opponents in Texas A&M and Clemson.
This Wake Forest team is struggling to find their offensive identity. Things just aren’t working sometimes. There are flashes of brilliance when things are clicking, but when they aren’t, things get ugly. Failure to capitalize on what has overall been great defensive performance all year long has thus far been the death of what was meant to be a very promising season. If they want to have a chance at the tournament, they’re going to have to figure things out now.
The Syracuse Orange are coming off of a decent campaign in Adrian Autry’s debut season, going 20-12 and 11-9 in ACC play, the first season in 47 years without Jim Boeheim at the helm. This time around, the Orange are 6-6 and coming off a 75-63 victory over Bucknell three days ago. Their only conference game thus far was a 69-64 loss at Notre Dame.
As always, the Orange have been quite good at home, with all six of their wins coming in the JMA Wireless Dome (formerly known as the Carrier Dome), with their only home loss coming at the hands of the Georgetown Hoyas.
Syracuse has been very suspect against high-level competition, as the Orange are 1-6 in quad III or better games, with their only win being over Cornell at home.
The Orange’s leading scorer thus far has been junior guard J.J. Starling, but Starling broke his left hand on December 2nd and has missed the last six games. On Starling’s status, Autry said on Saturday, “I think he’s close. But I don’t know, I’m not a doctor.”
Should Starling be unavailable, all eyes would shift to the big frontcourt duo of Eddie Lampkin Jr. and Donnie Freeman. Lampkin is averaging 10.7 points-per-game with 7.3 rebounds, while Freeman averages 13.7 points and 8.1 rebounds. Yes, Syracuse is a pretty good rebounding team, near the top of the ACC in rebounding margin mainly due to these two.
Old Friend
The Orange have a familiar face on the roster this year as they brought in former Demon Deacon and Georgia State transfer Lucas Taylor. Taylor has been a decent contributor in a bench role for Autry’s squad, averaging 3.7 points and 1.6 rebounds a game. He’s played double-digit minutes in every game so far.Shootout… not
Offensively, neither team in this matchup has shot the ball well from behind the arc so far this season, in fact they are the two worst three-point shooting teams in the ACC. The Deacs are shooting 26.5% from range on the year, and the Orange are shooting 29.1%. The difference is, the Deacs have shot and continue to attempt a decent number of threes every game, whereas the Orange attempt the second-fewest in the ACC with 220 (NC State has 219).Long story short… I don’t expect either team to rain threes in this one (though it would be a pleasant development if Parker Freidrichsen rediscovered his shooting stroke over the holiday break).
This game will be won or lost on the interior. If Wake can keep Syracuse even somewhat off the boards and play strong defense in the paint, they’ll have a serious advantage. That means Efton Reid, Tre’Von Spillers, and Churchill Abass had better come to play (and stay out of foul trouble).
Get ready for an exciting matchup as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons take on the Syracuse Orange in college basketball action. Both teams are looking to secure a crucial win in this ACC showdown. The Demon Deacons are coming off a strong performance and are looking to build on their momentum. Led by standout players like Alondes Williams and Jake LaRavia, Wake Forest has shown they have the talent and skill to compete with the best teams in the conference.
On the other side, the Orange are also a formidable opponent with a solid roster and a history of success in the ACC. Led by veteran coach Jim Boeheim, Syracuse is known for their strong defense and ability to score from beyond the arc.
This game is sure to be a competitive and high-energy battle, with both teams fighting for a crucial conference win. So make sure to tune in and catch all the action as Wake Forest takes on Syracuse in what promises to be a thrilling matchup.

#Wake #Forest #Basketball #Syracuse #PreviewSyracuse Orange men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Wake Forest
The Syracuse Orange (6-6, 0-1) are back in action this afternoon when they host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (9-4, 1-1). Tip off is at 2:00 on ESPN2 and here’s what we expect.
Kevin: Syracuse 68, Wake Forest 65
This game could get ugly as neither team is shooting the ball well from deep. Wake has been strong on the defensive side, so Syracuse has to take care of the ball in this one. I think the game plan early will be feeding Eddie Lampkin to try and get Efton Reid in foul trouble. Hunter Sallis will go off in this one, but I think Syracuse gets some big shots from Elijah Moore down the stretch to steal a home win to close out 2024.
Mike: Wake Forest 77, Syracuse 68
So far Wake’s losses are to three ranked programs and an extremely underrated Xavier squad. I wish I had more confidence that SU could put up similar resistance but in a grindy game like this, you need that someone who can get hot down the stretch and there just isn’t a match for Sallis… and that’d probably still apply even with J.J. Starling healthy.
Dom: Wake Forest 73, Syracuse 66
A defensive battle will inevitably lead to a close margin of victory either way. Sallis feels like the tiebreaker here considering he’s the best scorer available for any team. I was originally planning to pick Syracuse to win this one, but it was tough on second look to ignore the 21 turnovers the Orange had last game against Bucknell. If that happens again, the Demon Deacons will have too many opportunities to score compared to Syracuse.
Szuba: Wake Forest 79, Syracuse 68
Syracuse has yet to take down a P4 opponent this season and that streak should continue here. While Wake isn’t scoring the ball as well this season as last, Steve Forbes has his guys defending at a high level. For a team struggling to shoot the ball and find consistency on offense outside of Lampkin and Donnie Freeman, that should prove difficult. Expect Wake’s veterans Sallis and Cam Hildreth lead the way in this one as the Deacs win by double-digits.
Max: Wake Forest 74, Syracuse 68
This game is just about a coin flip, so I’ll back the Demon Deacons here. Yes, they don’t shoot it well from three, but it hasn’t seemed to matter in wins against Michigan, Minnesota and Boston College. Both teams play at a slower pace and shoot poorly offensively, so points will be at a premium once again. Like Mike said, Sallis should prove too much for the Orange to handle, sealing the win for Wake with clutch shooting down the stretch.

Syracuse (6-6, 0-1 ACC) looks for its first conference win in the ACC home opener against Wake Forest (9-4, 1-1 ACC).
In the all-time series, the Orange have a significant 11-4 advantage. But as of recent, the Demon Deacons have been slowly trying to make up ground, winning the last two matchups. One of those games was a 30-point blowout at the expense of SU. The last time Syracuse won was in March of 2023.
The Orange are coming off a 75-63 victory over Bucknell to close out the squad’s non-conference schedule. Eddie Lampkin and Donnie Freeman both logged double-doubles, while Jaquan Carlos was just one assist shy of recording a double-double himself.
Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons haven’t played a game in 10 days. That contest was a 72-63 loss against No. 25 Clemson. Hunter Sallis, a projected NBA prospect for the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, had a team-high 26 points.
Sallis is the team’s primary scorer on the season. The senior averages just under 18 points per game while shooting near 90% from the charity stripe. Another fourth-year to keep an eye on is Cameron Hildreth who is second in scoring on the team at 13 points a night.
One Thing To Keep An Eye On: How Do The Orange Respond Against One Of The Better Teams In The Conference
Offensively, Wake Forest is led by Sallis who is a top five scorer in the conference and is projected in many mock drafts to be a late first-round or early second-round pick. Additionally the Demon Deacons are the second best team in the conference in terms of blocks with just under five a game. Similarly, Wake Forest allows just under 65 points a night on average, good for third-best in the conference.
This matchup should be a barometer for how the Orange can stack up in the ACC. If SU can beat a respectable Wake Forest team on its home floor, it’ll be a win that can be a momentum boost for a team that has been looking for a jolt of energy for the last month. But more than that, it’ll prove that Syracuse has the talent and potential to remain relevant in what’s proving to be a rather top-heavy conference.
