Book Review: The War I Finally Won by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
I recently finished reading The War I Finally Won by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, and I must say, it was a truly incredible read. This novel is the sequel to the critically acclaimed The War That Saved My Life, and it does not disappoint.
The story follows the life of Ada Smith, a young girl with a clubfoot who has endured years of abuse and neglect at the hands of her mother. In this sequel, we see Ada continue to navigate the challenges of her new life with her adopted family during World War II in England.
Bradley’s writing is both poignant and powerful, as she delves into themes of resilience, family, and the impact of war on individuals. Ada’s journey is one of growth and self-discovery, and her strength and courage are truly inspiring.
The characters are well-developed and the historical setting is vividly brought to life. Bradley’s attention to detail and her ability to evoke emotion make this novel a compelling and unforgettable read.
I highly recommend The War I Finally Won to anyone looking for a moving and thought-provoking historical fiction novel. It is a story of triumph, resilience, and the power of love, and it is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Russia on Sunday claimed its troops had captured Velyka Novosilka, a strategically important town in the Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine. The statement could not be independently verified, and Ukraine’s 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade said its troops had only strategically withdrawn from certain parts of Velyka Novosilka to avoid encirclement. “This does not mean that we have completely left the city, the fighting in Velyka Novosilka continues. All actions are aimed at minimising our own losses and maximum damage to the enemy.” The brigade said the withdrawal would make it topographically difficult for Russians to advance by making the river an obstacle. “The enemy … will have no peace, any movement is cut off by shells and drones.”
Russia also claimed it troops had taken control of the settlement of Zelene in Donetsk region. There was no independent confirmation. Zelene lies south of Pokrovsk where Russia has incurred mass casualties in a grinding campaign against Ukrainian defenders. In its latest Russia-Ukraine war assessment, the Institute for the Study of War said: “Russian forces recently advanced near Toretsk, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka.”
Ukraine’s military said it destroyed 200 Shahed drones in an attack on warehouses in the Oryol region of Russia. “Concrete structures were hit, where thermobaric warheads, which are used to equip drones, were stored. There is information about a strong secondary detonation.”
Ukraine on Sunday claimed a further successful drone strike on the Ryazan oil refinery south-east of Moscow. It was the second attack on the same site in less that two weeks. Kyiv said the refinery is one of the four largest in Russia and is used by Moscow’s air force. “Explosions and a fire were recorded in the targeted area,” it said. The Russian regional governor in Ryazan – Pavel Malkov – said Russian air defence had “destroyed” drones over the region and that authorities were assessing the damage. Russian officials routinely falsely claim that all attacking drones were destroyed and any damage was only caused by falling debris.
An undersea fibre optic cable between Latvia and Sweden was damaged on Sunday, likely as a result of external influence, Latvia said, prompting Nato to deploy patrol ships to the area and triggering a sabotage investigation by Swedish authorities. Nato was coordinating military ships and aircraft under its recently deployed mission, dubbed Baltic Sentry. The effort follows a string of incidents in which power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines have been damaged in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has taken a new turn as Moscow claims control of the town of Velyka Novosilka. However, Ukrainian forces are disputing this claim, stating that the fight for control of the town is far from over.
The town of Velyka Novosilka has been a key battleground in the conflict between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists. The area has seen heavy fighting in recent weeks, with both sides vying for control of the strategic town.
Moscow’s claim of control over Velyka Novosilka comes as a blow to Ukrainian forces, who have been fighting to maintain control of the town. However, Ukrainian officials have stated that their forces are still engaged in fierce fighting in the area and are determined to retake control of Velyka Novosilka.
The situation in Ukraine remains fluid, with both sides continuing to engage in violent clashes. The international community has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but the fighting shows no signs of abating.
As the conflict in Ukraine rages on, the people of Velyka Novosilka are caught in the crossfire, with their town becoming a symbol of the ongoing struggle for control in the region. The ultimate outcome of the fighting in Velyka Novosilka remains uncertain, but one thing is clear – the fight for control of the town is far from over.
When Italian police officers swooped into a Holiday Inn in Turin in northern Italy and arrested a guest — the director of several Libyan prisons known for their inhumane conditions — they were acting on a warrant from the International Criminal Court.
The warrant against the man, Osama Elmasry Njeem, said he was suspected of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, torture, rape and sexual violence.
But two days after the arrest last Sunday, the Italian police released Mr. Njeem and escorted him back to Libya on a government plane. Pictures soon emerged on Libyan news media showing him cheerfully descending the aircraft bearing the Italian flag.
His release has enraged the International Criminal Court and has alarmed human rights groups and Italy’s political opposition, which accused the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of cozying up to the Libyan authorities because it relies on Libya to keep migrants away from Italian shores.
“You sent this man back for political reasons,” Peppe De Cristoforo, an opposition lawmaker, told Italy’s interior minister in Parliament on Thursday. “Unfortunately the Libyan authority is complicit with the Italian government.”
Ms. Meloni’s government has denied those accusations and attributed the release to procedural reasons. The Italian police, the authorities said, arrested Mr. Njeem before receiving an official request to do so from the justice ministry, violating the procedure and invalidating the arrest.
By the time the justice minister finished assessing the I.C.C.’s warrant, Mr. Njeem was already on his way home, government officials said.
Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, said Mr. Njeem had been expelled “for security reasons” because he was considered “dangerous.”
Asked whether the release was related to Italy’s “subordination” to Libya because of agreements on migrants, Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, told Italian reporters that “there is no subordination to anyone.”
Those explanations have not been persuasive to the government’s critics.
“Am I the only one who thinks you have gone completely crazy?” Senator Matteo Renzi, a former prime minister, asked in the Senate. “He was in jail and you brought him back home.”
Since 2017, Italy has had a bilateral agreement with Libya that includes millions of euros in financial support to curb the flow of migrants from Africa trying to cross the Mediterranean and reach European shores.
Ms. Meloni’s party has credited the deal with reducing the number of launches of rickety boats from Libya and Tunisia. The prime minister traveled to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, several times last year and has called the relationship with Libya “a priority for Italy.”
Human rights groups say that success has come at the cost of grave human rights violations. They say North African countries have abandoned migrants in the Sahara without food or water, or kept them in Libyan prisons, where they have faced torture, sexual violence and starvation.
As the director of the Mitiga prison in Tripoli, among others, Mr. Njeem, the head of the Libyan judiciary police, was accused of committing, ordering or assisting crimes against people imprisoned in the system since February 2015, according to the I.C.C.
A statement by the court said some of his victims had been imprisoned for religious reasons, on suspicion of “immoral behavior” or homosexuality, or for the purpose of coercion.
“It was the first major arrest of someone at the top of the Libyan prison system since 2011,” said Nello Scavo, a reporter for Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian Bishops’ Conference. Mr. Scavo has been documenting cases of abuse in Libyan prisons for years.
Riccardo Noury, a spokesman for Amnesty International Italy, said his agency had documented cases of torture, rape, forced labor and other crimes in prisons overseen by Mr. Njeem.
“He had direct supervision and management of some of these centers,” Mr. Noury said, adding that the accusations against Mr. Njeem had been bolstered by reports by other agencies and institutions, including the United States Department of State (where he is identified in a report on human rights as Usama Najim).
Chantal Meloni, an Italian criminal lawyer and professor who also works for the Berlin-based European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, said Mr. Njeem’s release was a direct affront to the International Criminal Court, and was particularly troubling “because Italy is a founding member.”
Still, many questions remained about why the Italian authorities did not act swiftly to address any bureaucratic mistake and instead rushed a man who was wanted for war crimes out of Italy.
Mr. Piantedosi, speaking on behalf of the Italian government, said the decision to release Mr. Njeem was made with the courts. He added that the government would offer more details next week.
Islam Al-Atrash contributed reporting from Tripoli.
In a controversial move, Italy has released a Libyan man sought by the International Criminal Court (I.C.C.) for alleged war crimes. The decision to release the suspect has sparked backlash from human rights groups and the international community.
The man in question, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of committing heinous crimes during the conflict in Libya. He was arrested in Italy on charges of human rights violations and was awaiting extradition to the I.C.C. for trial.
However, Italian authorities have decided to release the suspect, citing concerns over his health and the possibility of him facing ill-treatment if extradited to the I.C.C. The decision has been met with criticism, with many calling it a betrayal of justice and a disregard for the victims of the crimes allegedly committed by the suspect.
Human rights groups have condemned Italy’s actions, stating that it sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the authority of the I.C.C. They have called for the suspect to be brought to justice and for Italy to uphold its obligations under international law.
The release of the Libyan man sought for war crimes has reignited the debate over accountability for atrocities committed during conflicts. It remains to be seen how this controversial decision will impact future cases of international justice and the fight against impunity.

Trump wants Jordan and Egypt to accept more Palestinian refugees and suggests plan to ‘clean out’ Gaza
US President Donald Trump has indicated that he would like to see Jordan, Egypt and other Arab nations increase the number of Palestinian refugees they are accepting from the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One yesterday, Trump, an ally of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said: “You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing and say, ‘You know, it’s over.’”
Trump also told reporters that he had call earlier in the day with King Abdullah II of Jordan and would speak with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on Sunday.

The newly inaugurated Republican president said he complimented Jordan for having successfully accepted Palestinian refugees and that he told the king: “I’d love for you to take on more, cause I’m looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now, and it’s a mess. It’s a real mess.” For context,Jordan is already home to more than 2.39 million registered Palestinian refugees, according to the UN.
Trump added:
I don’t know, something has to happen, but it’s literally a demolition site right now. Almost everything’s demolished and people are dying there, so I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing in a different location where I think they could maybe live in peace for a change.
Trump said that the potential housing “could be temporary” or “could be long-term”. During Israel’s 15 month war on Gaza, more than two-thirds of buildings have been destroyed or damaged by one of the most intensive bombardments in modern times. It has sparked a refugee crisis as large parts of the territory are now uninhabitable.

Trump resumes sending 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, undoing Biden pause
As a reminder, Donald Trump said yesterday that he had instructed the US military to release a hold on the supply of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel imposed by former president Joe Biden.
“We released them. We released them today. And they’ll have them. They paid for them and they’ve been waiting for them for a long time. They’ve been in storage,” Trump told reporters.
Biden put the hold on the delivery of those bombs due to concern over the devastating impact they could have on the civilian population, particularly in Gaza’s Rafah, during Israel’s war on the Palestinian territory, which has now killed over 47,200 people, according to the health ministry. One 2,000-pound bomb can rip through thick concrete and metal, creating a wide blast radius.
Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Saar has today thanked Trump for authorising the release of the shipment of 2,000-pound bombs.
Thank you, President Trump, for yet another display of leadership by releasing the crucial defence shipment to Israel.
Washington says it is helping Israel defend itself against Iran-backed militant groups like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen. But Israel has been accused of genocide and war crimes in Gaza, charges Israel denies. The US has undoubtedly fuelled Israel’s military assault through providing it with arms and giving Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration diplomatic cover on the international stage.
Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad says Trump’s idea of relocating Palestinians encourages ‘war crimes’
Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad, which fought alongside Hamas in the war against Israel, has reacted to Donald Trump’s idea of possibly relocating Palestinian people to Egypt and Jordan, both of which border Gaza (see post at 08.54 to read the US president’s comments). It said: “This proposal falls within the framework of encouraging war crimes and crimes against humanity by forcing our people to leave their land.”
A senior Hamas official, meanwhile, told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency: “As they have foiled every plan for displacement and alternative homelands over the decades, our people will also foil such projects,” Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas political bureau, said.
Israel’s war on Gaza displaced almost the entire 2.3 million people in Gaza, many of them multiple times (through a combination of forced evacuation orders and relentless airstrikes across the territory). Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has previously rejected the idea of a forced displacement of Palestinians into the Sinai peninsula, amid concern that those displaced may never be able to return.
Shortly after the Hamas-led 7 October attack on southern Israel, Jordan’s King Abdullah warned against trying to push Palestinian refugees into Egypt or Jordan, saying that the humanitarian situation must to be dealt with inside Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
As we mentioned in a previous post, Jordan is already home to millions of registered Palestinian refugees.
Israeli forces kill three people in south Lebanon as residents try to return home after deadline for Israeli withdrawal expires
Israeli forces killed three people and injured at least 31 others trying to return to homes in south Lebanon where Israeli troops remained on the ground after a deadline for their withdrawal passed on Sunday, Lebanon’s health ministry has said.
As my colleagues Bethan McKernanandQuique Kierszenbaumnote in this story, the US/France-brokered ceasefire was supposed to become permanent when it expired on Sunday – but just a day before the deadline, neither side had fulfilled their obligations.
The deal stipulated that Israeli forces should withdraw from the south as the Iran-backed Hezbollah’s weapons and fighters were removed from the area and the Lebanese army deployed.
Israel has, however, said the terms have not been fully enforced by the Lebanese state, while Lebanon’s US-backed military on Saturday accused Israel of procrastinating in its withdrawal.
Locals gather with flags in Burj al-Muluk, near the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Kila, where Israeli forces remained on the ground despite the deadline for their withdrawal having passed. Photograph: Karamallah Daher/Reuters
The Lebanese health ministry has said one person was killed in the Lebanese village of Houla, another in Aitaroun, and a third person in Blida as a result of Israeli attacks on citizens while they were trying to enter their still-occupied towns.
Dozens of Lebanese people have also reportedly been injured by Israeli forces who remain on the ground despite the terms of the agreement.
Israel has not said how long its forces would remain in the south, where the Israeli military says it has been seizing Hezbollah weapons and dismantling its infrastructure.

Palestinians blocked from returning to northern Gaza by Israeli military
Hello, and welcome to the Guardian’s live coverage of the developments in the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel and the crisis in the Middle East more widely.
But thousands of displaced Palestinian people are reportedly being blocked from returning to their homes in northern Gaza as Israel accuses Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, from not honouring the terms of the ceasefire deal.
On Saturday, armed members of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad handed over four Israeli soldiers to the Red Cross as part of the agreement. The freed soldiers are Karina Ariev, 20, Daniella Gilboa, 20, Naama Levy, 20, and Liri Albag, 19, who served with the Israel Defense Forces.
Palestinians wait in the central Gaza strip to be allowed to return to their homes in the north after being displaced by Israeli bombardments during the war. Photograph: Mohammed Salem/Reuters
However, a dispute broke out when the German-Israeli citizen Arbel Yehoud, aged 28 at the time of her capture, was not included in the swap, even though Hamas was expected to free more non-military hostages.
Yehoud is one of the last female civilians held in Gaza. She is reportedly held by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Gaza’s second largest armed faction, rather than Hamas, which led the 7 October 2023 on southern Israel, complicating her potential handover and release.
Hamas insisted Yehoud is alive and will be freed next week. But Israel has responded by delaying the planned withdrawal of some of its troops from Gaza, which would have allowed Palestinians to return to the devastated northern areas of the strip, which include Beit Hanoon, Beit Lahiya and Jabalia.
Al Jazeera is reporting this morning that thousands of Palestinian people are waiting for a permit by the Israeli military to access northern Gaza, much of which lies in rubble after the renewed Israeli assault on it last autumn.
The Israeli military has warned people that they cannot move north past the Netzarim Corridor – which divides the territory – as planned. We will bring you the latest on this throughout the day.
The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has reached a critical point as displaced Palestinians are being blocked from returning to their homes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Gaza. To make matters worse, former President Donald Trump has suggested a drastic solution to the conflict by saying “we just clean out” Gaza.
The Israel-Gaza war has resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life, with reports of civilians being caught in the crossfire. The blockade of Palestinians from returning to their homes only adds to the humanitarian crisis in the region, leaving many without access to basic necessities and shelter.
Trump’s inflammatory remarks have been met with condemnation from world leaders, who have called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict through dialogue and negotiation. The international community must come together to address the root causes of the crisis and work towards a lasting peace in the region.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, it is more important than ever for global leaders to step up and take action to protect the lives and rights of all those affected by the conflict. The world is watching, and the time to act is now. #MiddleEastCrisis #IsraelGazaWar #PalestinianRights
In what seems to have become the first major auction of the year, an intense bidding war is underway for a reboot of Resident Evil, the horror action movie franchise based on the popular video games. Cregger is attached to write and direct.
Four studios are elbowing for the win, among them Warner Bros. and Netflix, according to sources.
Constantin Film, which has held the screen rights to the title since the late 1990s and has been behind the previous movies, will produce the reboot along with PlayStation Productions. Shay Hatten, who worked on John Wick: Chapter 4 and Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, is co-writing.
The movies, six starring Milla Jovovich plus one origin feature made during the pandemic, have been moneymakers. But Cregger is the reason studios are willing to shell out major money.
Cregger was an actor and comedian who reinvented himself as a cutting-edge filmmaker with Barbarian, the 2022 cult hit that he wrote and directed. It also established him as a new voice in horror, and when he went out with his follow-up horror project, a bidding war erupted. That upcoming film, titled Weapons, was won by Warners’ New Line division and saw him become a final cut director. The horror movie has Josh Brolin and Julia Garner in its ensemble cast.
The word on Weapons is that it’s very strong and has been testing quite high, according to sources. And Warners, which has not yet dated the movie, is likely doing everything it can to keep Cregger in its talent fold. (The filmmaker is also gearing up to release his first major film as a producer, the horror thriller Companion, which is receiving glowing reviews ahead of a Jan. 31 opening.)
And the combination of Cregger paired with an established intellectual property is also likely to be something too tempting to pass up, no matter the cost.
The Resident Evil movies, based on the Capcom video games, were a mix of horror, sci-fi and action genres and followed the adventures of a heroine who fights zombies and the Umbrella Corporation, the bio warfare company that let loose the monsters. The movies have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide.
Cregger’s take is described by sources as a revamp that will take the title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games, which date back to 1996.
Exciting news for Resident Evil fans! The upcoming reboot of the popular video game franchise has ignited a fierce bidding war among studios, all vying for the rights to bring this beloved series back to the big screen. And at the center of it all is none other than Zach Cregger, who has been tapped to star in the lead role.
Cregger, known for his roles in hit comedies like “The Whitest Kids U’ Know” and “Miss March,” is set to bring a fresh and dynamic take to the iconic character at the heart of the Resident Evil universe. With his unique blend of humor and charisma, Cregger is sure to captivate audiences and breathe new life into this beloved franchise.
The buzz surrounding the Resident Evil reboot has already sent shockwaves through Hollywood, with major studios scrambling to secure the rights to this highly anticipated project. And with Cregger on board, it’s no wonder that the competition is fierce.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Resident Evil reboot and the exciting bidding war that is sure to follow. This is one reboot you won’t want to miss!
