Former Steelers Hines Ward, James Harrison don’t make cut as Hall of Fame finalists

The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee bypassed former Pittsburgh Steelers players Hines Ward and James Harrison once again.

Neither Ward nor Harrison made the cut to 15 finalists that the Hall of Fame announced Saturday.

Ward made the list of 25 semifinalists for the ninth time, and Harrison reached the semifinal stage for the third time. Ward retired after the 2011 season, and Harrison played for the last time in 2017.

Ward is the franchise’s career receptions leader with 1,000, and he was the Super Bowl XL most valuable player. Harrison’s 100-yard interception return for a touchdown before halftime of Super Bowl XLIII was a pivotal moment in the team’s sixth championship.

Also missing the cut to 15 finalists was former Penn State offensive lineman Steve Wisniewski.

Five finalists are in their first year of eligibility, and nine reached this stage of the process last year. The selection committee will be selecting up to five modern-era players for the Class of 2025 when they meet prior to the Super Bowl.

The Hall of Fame newcomers will be announced during the pre-Super Bowl festivities.

The first-time finalists are Luke Kuechly, Eli Manning, Terrell Suggs, Adam Vinatieri and Marshall Yanda. Steve Smith Sr. also reached the finals for the first time in his fourth year of eligibility. Fred Taylor, Jahri Evans, Eric Allen and Antonio Gates are finalists for the second time. Darren Woodson reached the finals for the third time. The other finalists are Willie Anderson (fourth time), Jared Allen (fifth), Torry Holt (sixth) and Reggie Wayne (sixth).

Joe Rutter is a TribLive reporter who has covered the Pittsburgh Steelers since the 2016 season. A graduate of Greensburg Salem High School and Point Park, he is in his fifth decade covering sports for the Trib. He can be reached at jrutter@triblive.com.

Former Steelers Hines Ward and James Harrison were not selected as finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022. Despite their impressive careers and contributions to the Pittsburgh Steelers, both players fell short of making the cut for the prestigious honor.

Ward, a wide receiver known for his tough play and clutch performances, was a key member of the Steelers’ Super Bowl-winning teams in 2005 and 2008. He was a four-time Pro Bowler and the MVP of Super Bowl XL. Ward’s 1,000 career receptions and over 12,000 receiving yards rank him among the all-time greats at his position.

Harrison, a linebacker known for his relentless pass rush and hard-hitting style, was a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Steelers and a five-time Pro Bowler. He was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and was known for his game-changing plays in critical moments.

While both Ward and Harrison had impressive careers and were fan favorites in Pittsburgh, they will have to wait another year for a shot at the Hall of Fame. The competition is stiff, and only a select few are chosen each year to be enshrined in Canton.

Despite this setback, Ward and Harrison will always be remembered for their contributions to the Steelers and the game of football. Their legacies will live on in the hearts of fans and in the annals of NFL history.

  • Miami QB Cam Ward breaks Case Keenum’s Division I touchdown passes record in Pop-Tarts Bowl

Miami QB Cam Ward breaks Case Keenum’s Division I touchdown passes record in Pop-Tarts Bowl

Miami quarterback Cam Ward broke the Division I career touchdown passes record Saturday when he completed his 156th career touchdown pass to Jacolby George with 4:12 left in the first quarter of the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

The four-yard score, Ward’s 37th touchdown pass of the season, broke a tie with former Houston quarterback Case Keenum, who holds the Football Bowl Subdivision-only record with 155 touchdown passes.

Ward, who won ACC player of the year honors, was a Heisman Trophy finalist and is a projected first-round NFL Draft pick, spent his first two years of college football at Incarnate Word, a Football Championship Subdivision program. He threw 71 touchdown passes there before transferring to Washington State for two seasons. Ward threw 48 touchdown passes in two seasons with the Cougars before transferring to Miami in January.

Ward may not hold on to the record for too long. Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel has thrown 153 career touchdown passes — all at the FBS level — and plays Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. If the No. 1 seed Ducks win, they’ll advance to the semifinals of the 12-team bracket.

Gabriel is already the FBS leader in career touchdowns with 186. Ward has 176 career touchdowns, including 20 on the ground.

Miami quarterback Cam Ward made history in the highly anticipated Pop-Tarts Bowl, breaking Case Keenum’s Division I touchdown passes record. Ward’s stellar performance on the field propelled his team to victory and solidified his place in college football history.

With a record-breaking number of touchdown passes under his belt, Ward’s talent and skill were on full display throughout the game. His precision passing and strategic decision-making helped lead his team to a decisive win in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, further cementing his reputation as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.

Fans and analysts alike were in awe of Ward’s incredible accomplishment, as he surpassed Keenum’s previous record with ease. As the new record holder for Division I touchdown passes, Ward has set the bar high for future quarterbacks to strive towards.

Congratulations to Cam Ward on this impressive achievement, and here’s to many more memorable moments on the field in the future.

Cam Ward now has the most passing TDs of any quarterback at the top two levels of college football.

Ward’s TD pass to Jacolby George in the first quarter of Saturday’s Pop-Tarts Bowl was the 156th TD of his career. He entered the game tied with former Houston QB Case Keenum for the most touchdowns of any player in Division I history.

Not long after finding George in the end zone, Ward got TD No. 157 with a 22-yard TD pass to Joshisa Trader early in the second quarter.

Keenum played in four-plus seasons for the Cougars and threw his TDs across 57 games from 2007 through 2011. He led college football with 44 TD passes in 2009 and then threw 48 TD passes in 2011.

Ward’s pass to George was his 37th TD of the season. He has the most passing TDs of any player in college football this season and the only player with a realistic shot at passing him by the end of the season is Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Sanders enters the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night with 35 passing TDs.

This was Ward’s only season at Miami as he heads to the NFL in 2025. Ward flirted with going to the NFL after the 2024 season, but decided to transfer to Miami for his final season of eligibility instead of going pro.

That turned into the right decision. Ward was a Heisman Trophy finalist this season and boosted his NFL Draft stock. He’s likely to be a top-10 pick in this spring’s draft because of his performance in 2024.

Before coming to Miami, Ward spent two seasons at Washington State and was at Incarnate Word for two seasons. At Washington State, Ward threw for 48 touchdown passes across 25 games with nearly 7,000 yards. He threw for 47 TDs in 2021 at Incarnate Word and had 4,648 passing yards while averaging 4.9 yards an attempt.

Miami’s Cam Ward made history in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, setting the Division I career passing touchdown record with a stellar performance. Ward’s record-breaking touchdown pass came in the second quarter of the game, solidifying his place in college football history.

Ward’s accomplishment is a testament to his talent and hard work throughout his collegiate career. The Miami quarterback has been a standout player for the team, consistently leading them to victory with his impressive passing skills.

Fans and analysts alike have been singing Ward’s praises, recognizing him as one of the top quarterbacks in college football. His record-breaking performance in the Pop-Tarts Bowl only solidifies his place as a true standout on the field.

Congratulations to Cam Ward on this incredible achievement! Here’s to many more touchdowns and victories in his future.

In the small town of Pine Ridge, tucked away in the mountains of North Carolina, there lived a man named LEM Ward. He was known far and wide for his kind heart, quick wit, and unwavering determination.

LEM Ward was a simple man, content with his life as a farmer and his modest cabin on the outskirts of town. He spent his days tending to his crops, caring for his animals, and helping out his neighbors whenever they needed a hand.

But LEM Ward’s life took a dramatic turn one fateful day when a group of outlaws rode into town, causing chaos and destruction wherever they went. The townspeople were terrified, unsure of what to do in the face of such lawlessness.

But LEM Ward was not one to stand idly by while his town was in danger. With a steely glint in his eye and a sense of purpose in his heart, he set out to confront the outlaws and put an end to their reign of terror.

Armed only with his courage and his trusty rifle, LEM Ward tracked the outlaws to their hideout deep in the mountains. In a daring showdown, he faced off against the leader of the gang in a fierce gunfight that echoed through the valley.

In the end, LEM Ward emerged victorious, the outlaws defeated and the town saved from certain destruction. The townspeople hailed him as a hero, a legend in their midst. But LEM Ward remained humble, simply returning to his farm and his quiet life, content in the knowledge that he had done what was right.

And so, the story of LEM Ward, the brave farmer who saved Pine Ridge, passed into legend, a tale of courage and determination that would be told for generations to come.
