  • How to save on energy while staying warm


    IDAHO FALLS — With temperatures dropping to below zero this week, many people are cranking up the heat, but if residents aren’t careful, it could lead to power outages.

    Rocky Mountain Power spokesman David Eskelsen says freezing temperatures can cause electrical problems, and increased usage can put added strain on the power grid.

    “Extreme weather of any kind does introduce stresses on the system because those are the times when customers typically use more energy than other times,” Eskelsen said. “That’s when normal wear and tear on the system can expose weak points.”

    Eskelsen says their systems are built to handle cold temperatures, but customers should be mindful of how much energy they use to reduce the chances of outages or other issues.

    He suggests using high-use appliances outside of peak times, which are mornings between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and evenings between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

    Rocky Mountain Power also recommends these tips to stay warm while saving energy.

  • Set the thermostat to 68º when you’re home and awake. Lower the temperature at night.
  • Close your window coverings at night to cut down on drafts.
  • Seal air leaks around doors or windows with caulk or weatherstripping to improve comfort.
  • Wash clothes in cold water and clean the lint filter in the dryer after every use.
  • Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use.

  • Cold-weather shelter in Bunnell to once again warm Flagler residents


    The Flagler County Government Services Building in Bunnell.

    The Sheltering Tree in Bunnell will continue to open its doors to Flagler County residents without heat over the next few nights.

    With the National Weather Service predicting overnight temperatures to plummet into the high 30s, low 40s overnight across the area, the county’s designated cold-weather shelter will activate its operations for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings.

    The facility, at 2200 N. State St. in Bunnell, opens at the Rock Transformation Center (formerly Church on the Rock) at 5 p.m. and closes at 8 a.m. the following day. Hot meals and cots are available during shelter hours.

    “We are grateful for our many teams of volunteers,” said Sue Bickings, chairperson of the Sheltering Tree. “It’s a commitment and we’ve already been open 16 nights this season.”

    After a record warm day a cool down is in store


    PHOENIX — Record-breaking temperatures were felt across the state today. Phoenix, Prescott, Show Low, Window Rock, and the Grand Canyon all breaking their daily high records today. We hit 81° here in Phoenix which breaks our 79° record set back in 1989.

    Air quality also remains a big issue in the Valley days after New Year’s Eve.

    Burn bans continue tonight across Maricopa County, so burning wood in fireplaces, stoves, and outdoor firepits is prohibited.

    Fine particle pollution (dust and smoke) is lingering over the Valley at unhealthy levels. The worst of it will impact us in the morning hours, with air quality gradually improving throughout the day. If you have any respiratory issues, such as asthma or COPD, limit your time outside in the morning to avoid difficulty breathing.

    The area of high pressure keeping us warm with stagnant air will break down into the weekend as a cold front sweeps through the state on Saturday. This storm will not bring any rain or snow to the state but it will bring some cooler air and windy conditions along the Rim and across Apache County.

    A wind advisory is in effect for portions of Apache County for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gust could reach 40-55 mph.

    Back in the Valley, overnight lows will continue to drop into the mid to upper 40s over the next few days, so our mornings will stay nice and cool.

    Afternoon highs will drop towards the lower 70s for the weekend and the start of the new week.

    A second storm midweek could cool temperatures even more for the second half of the week with a chance for snow in the high country.

    Although we will see a cool-off for the upcoming week, temperatures will remain above average for this time of the year and above-average temperatures will likely remain in the forecast overall through the month of January and into spring.
