  • February Temperature Outlook Trends Warmer In East

    • An updated February outlook is warmer in the East and South than what happened in January.
    • Early in the month, the epicenter of February cold will be from the Northwest to the Northern Plains.
    • But a potential pattern change later in the month could shift that cold elsewhere.

February’s temperature forecast looks much different than January’s persistent cold, but there’s a late month wild card that could change that, according to an updated outlook released Friday by The Weather Company and Atmospheric G2.

How February looks: For the month as a whole, most of the East and South are expected to be warmer than average, particularly from the mid-Atlantic and Southeast to coastal and southern Texas. However, a colder February is expected in the Northwest, Northern Rockies and Northern Plains.

Since the map is an overall snapshot for all 28 days in the month, it masks some notable week-to-week temperature swings, which we’ll discuss later.

The February 2025 temperature outlook, as of Jan. 31. The colors on the map indicate areas of progressively above average (oranges, maroon, pink) and below average (blue, purple, pink) temperatures forecast for the month, overall.

    (AG2/TWC)

How the month’s temperatures might evolve:

    • February should start out generally colder from the Northwest to the Northern Plains, and occasionally into the Great Lakes and Northeast as some cold air in western Canada sweeps across the northern tier. Meanwhile, the southern tier of the country should be warmer than usual for this time of year.
    • However, there’s a pattern change that could happen around mid-month, according to Todd Crawford, Vice President of Meteorology at Atmospheric G2.
    • “Heading into the back half of February, this represents a low-probability colder risk,” said Crawford, referring to this potential pattern change’s impact on temperatures in the East and South.

How the pattern change could make it colder later in February: Patterns of the jet stream, including sharp southward plunges and domes of high pressure, help steer storm systems that either deliver or deflect cold air.

As of the time this article was published, computer forecast models suggested a dome of high pressure known as a Greenland block could form by mid-month. When that happens, the jet stream is forced to take a southward nosedive over the eastern U.S., delivering more persistent cold there.

At the same time a positive phase of the Pacific-North American pattern could move another dome of high pressure near or just off the West Coast.

If that pattern change happens, it could shift the country to a warm West – cold East and South scenario for late February. So, you may want to enjoy your February thaw early in the month, while you can.

Jet stream pattern in the positive phase of the Pacific North American pattern.

Cold January: This February forecast looks quite a bit different than January, as the map below of January temperature anomalies (through the 27th) shows.

According to AG2’s Todd Crawford, it was America’s coldest January since 2014, that’s the January when the “polar vortex” first entered into the pop culture lexicon.

The month featured four major winter storms in under three weeks, beginning with Winter Storm Blair and punctuated by the historic Gulf Coast Winter Storm Enzo.

This map shows how far above and below average temperatures were in the first 27 days of January 2025, in degrees Celsius. This map shows how far above and below average temperatures were in the first 27 days of January 2025, in degrees Celsius.

This map shows how far above and below average temperatures were in the first 27 days of January 2025, the most recent data available at the time the article was published, in degrees Celsius.

    (NOAA/PSL)

As we head into the month of February, it looks like the temperature outlook is trending towards warmer conditions in the eastern part of the country. This means that residents in cities like New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. can expect milder temperatures compared to normal for this time of year.

This shift towards warmer conditions is likely due to a variety of factors, including the influence of a strong jet stream pattern and the presence of a high-pressure system over the region. While this may be good news for those who are tired of the cold winter weather, it is important to remember that weather patterns can change quickly and unexpectedly.

As always, it is important to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and be prepared for any changes in temperature or conditions. Whether you’re enjoying the warmer weather or longing for a return to winter chill, it’s always best to be ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store. Stay tuned for updates on the February temperature outlook and stay safe out there!

  • Greenville community members take advantage of warmer temperatures

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – After freezing temperatures, the warmer weather has made a comeback and Greenville residents were taking full advantage of that today.

Whether it’s running, biking, fishing, or even frisbee – at the Greenville Town Common Friday you could see community members out and about enjoying the warmer weather by partaking in many activities.

While above-average temperatures in eastern Carolina aren’t uncommon, 70-degree temperatures don’t come around too often. ECU student Ireland Coffey has a highly energetic dog and was not going to miss this opportunity to enjoy the weather.

“During the winter, it’s kinda hard and we don’t love it as much but its been so nice to be outside when it is this nice outside so we took the first chance we had to go on a run today,” Coffey said.

As morning turned to noon today, more and more residents found themselves enjoying the weather, even bringing their kids, friends, and families outside.

But at the end of the day, some say it does not matter what the weather is like. ECU Student Brock Lasure loves to play frisbee and according to him, snow or no snow he is outside.

“It does not really matter what the weather is like I actually went outside and played this while it was snowing and lost a few in the snow,” ECU Student, Brock Lasure said.

As the temperatures begin to rise in Greenville, community members are making the most of the warmer weather by getting outside and enjoying the sunshine. From families taking walks in the park to friends gathering for picnics, the community is coming together to soak up the beautiful spring weather.

Local businesses are also seeing an increase in foot traffic as residents venture out to enjoy outdoor dining, shopping, and other activities. Restaurants with outdoor seating are filling up quickly, and parks and green spaces are bustling with people playing sports, walking their dogs, and simply enjoying the fresh air.

With more people getting vaccinated and restrictions easing, there is a sense of optimism in the air as Greenville residents look forward to a summer filled with outdoor events and gatherings. Whether it’s a hike in the mountains, a day at the lake, or simply sitting outside with a good book, the community is taking full advantage of the warmer temperatures and embracing all that Greenville has to offer.

  • Houston turns warmer and muggier for a couple of days before clear and cooler weather this weekend – Space City Weather

In brief: There’s a little something for everyone in today’s forecast. We’ve got clouds and some rain during the next couple of days before a nice stretch of sunny and low-humidity weather to take us through the weekend. Only thing to watch for is the low-end potential of some storms on Thursday afternoon.

    Wednesday

It’s a fairly dreary morning outside, with light, misty rainfall and areas of fog. This drizzle and fog may persist for much of the morning before we’re simply left with a layer of clouds. With a warmer, southeasterly flow in place we can expect temperatures to warm to about 70 degrees this afternoon, with increasing humidity levels. A chance of drizzle remains overnight, as lows only drop into the lower 60s.

NOAA storm outlook for Thursday and Thursday night.

    Thursday

This will be a fairly warm day, despite the cloudy skies, as high temperatures rise into the mid-70s with humidity to match. Some scattered showers will be possible during the morning hours, along with gusty southeasterly winds. During the afternoon, a cold front will approach the area, likely reaching Katy and Tomball an hour or two after noon. What I think we’re likely to see is a broken line of showers that may possibly fill in as it moves through Houston during the afternoon. There is a slight chance of some severe weather with the front, and this is most likely to occur as it passes to the east of the Interstate 45 corridor. This includes the potential for severe thunderstorms or damaging winds. (There is a very low-end chance of hail or a tornado). For most of us, the front should be a fairly modest event, with drier air moving in behind. Lows will drop into the low 50s on Thursday night with clearing skies.

Saturday morning looks to be the coldest of the week. (Weather Bell)

    Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Sunshine is back on the menu, along with a nice slug of drier air and sunshine. Winds from the north will be a bit gusty on Friday morning, but should back down after that. We’re looking at highs on Friday and Saturday of around 70 degrees, with temperatures at night falling into the mid- to upper-40s. Sunday will be a little warmer, with highs in the lower- to mid-70s, but still with plenty of dry air. I can’t wait to take a long bike ride and soak up some sun.

    Next week

The atmosphere turns a bit messier next week, but generally I expect we’ll see warm, partly sunny days with highs in the 70s, and nights with lows around 60 degrees. There may be some slight, daily rain chances. Some kind of front works its way toward Houston by the weekend, but an Arctic blast it will not be.

Hey Houstonians! Get ready for a brief spell of warmer and muggier weather in the next couple of days before clear and cooler conditions sweep in this weekend. According to Space City Weather, temperatures are expected to rise slightly with increased humidity, making it feel more like summer than fall.

But fear not, as relief is on the way. A cold front is set to move through the area by the weekend, bringing with it drier air and cooler temperatures. So, enjoy the warmth while it lasts, but be prepared for a refreshing change in the weather soon.

Stay tuned to Space City Weather for the latest updates and forecasts as we transition from summer to fall in the Bayou City. Stay safe and stay cool, Houston! #HoustonWeather #SpaceCityWeather #FallIsComing

  • Region to enjoy sunny skies, warmer temps

It will be mainly in the 20s across the area during the morning commute and in the teens west of I-495. Temperatures will slowly improve to the mid-30s this afternoon. The sunset will set closer to 5 p.m. tonight and will break into the 5 p.m. hour by this time next week.

Highs Monday will work into the mid- and upper 30s across Southern New England.Boston Globe

You’ll notice a breeze as you go about your day as the jet stream moves south of New England and makes room for a couple of storm systems to approach the region. No precipitation is expected today, but the precursor wind will be felt, with wind speeds to 15 miles per hour and a few gusts above 20.

Wind speeds will mostly stay between 10 and 15 miles per hour on Monday.Boston Globe

As we look toward the middle of the week, a Canadian clipper storm, moving very quickly and wielding little moisture, will race by north of New England Tuesday morning. This system will extend a cold front across the region and bring scattered light snow showers into the area.

Little accumulation is expected, but Boston and Southern New England may pick up a coating of snow at most. Many areas could just see a few flurries. Northern New England might see an inch or two.

Wind will stay somewhat blustery as temperatures stick around the mid-30s.

A weak cold front will bring some scattered snow showers across New England Tuesday.Boston Globe

Then another clipper storm will speed through the Great Lakes Wednesday and set up another stretch of light snow through New England, although it’s looking like most of the snow will fall across Northern New England once again.

This storm should produce a few flakes across Boston, but should stay very limited in terms of accumulations.

More widespread snow showers will pass through New England on Wednesday.Boston Globe

A quick peek to the weekend brings the chance for a third system to push through New England, but this storm is looking more like a wider scale storm that will enter the region from the southwest.

With colder, Arctic air once again settling back into the region by late week, snow totals might end up being more than the previous two storms combined, but this forecast could certainly change over the coming days. Globe Weather HQ will be monitoring the progression of the potential storm throughout the week.

Southern New England: Looking like mostly sunny skies across Southern New England today with morning temperatures in the upper teens and low 20s. Highs should build to the mid- and upper 30s, the warmer end along the South Shore and into Rhode Island. Wind speeds to 10 to 15 mph.

Central and Western Mass.: A brisk start to the day with morning temperatures in the low teens under mostly sunny skies. Highs will build do the mid-30s from Springfield to Worcester with the Berkshires stalling in the upper 20s. Winds will range from 10 to 15 mph.

Cape and Islands: Mostly sunny skies today with temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s with wind speeds building to 20 mph. A few gusts of 25 to 30 mph are possible.

Northern New England: A mix of sun and clouds with building clouds during the afternoon. A few snow showers could fall across extreme Northern New England. Highs will reach the low 30s with wind speeds to about 10 mph.

  • Freezing rain possible inland Monday morning, then warmer week ahead

Our next system approaches the area overnight Sunday into Monday.

While overnight, the air temperatures are likely to stay above freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit), the ground is running colder than the air.

As the rain falls to the ground, it could freeze on contact with elevated surfaces and the ground itself Monday early. Areas that have ground temperatures above freezing will not see freezing rain.

Freezing rain is possible in the early hours of Monday morning as showers first approach the area from the west. The Pee Dee and the Border Belt have the best chance to see freezing rain overnight. All precipitation turns to rain around dawn on Monday.

NEW: Sea of fun: dads and daughters dive into memorable night at Ripley’s Aquarium dance

Scattered to numerous showers continue into mid-day, then become more scattered in nature in the afternoon. Shower chances end from west to east Monday afternoon and evening.

Highs on Monday will be chilly in the upper 40s to low 50s across the area.

Behind Monday’s system, high pressure builds into the region and dry skies take over for the rest of the last work week of January.

TRENDING: Columbia protesters join nationwide ‘We Fight Back’ rallies opposing Trump’s policies

A warming trend takes place with this area of high pressure as well. By Tuesday afternoon, highs will be near-normal to even a tad above normal across the area.

The week remains warmer than most of the days the area has experienced through January.

LOCAL: Tee-riffic recovery: MB golf course bounces back from snow

A dry cold front is likely Wednesday night, bringing temperatures down a tad for Thursday, but they’ll rebound by the end of the week into the first few days of February.

A system approaches for the first few days of February as well, bringing rain chances to the area. More on this system will come to light this week, so stay tuned.

For more local forecast information, download our ‘WPDE WX’ App! It’s available on iOS and Android.

Attention all residents in inland areas: be prepared for the possibility of freezing rain on Monday morning as a winter weather system moves through the region. This could create hazardous driving conditions, so please exercise caution and allow extra time for your commute.

However, don’t fret too much, as warmer temperatures are on the horizon for the rest of the week. By midweek, we can expect temperatures to rise above freezing, melting any remaining ice and snow. The sun will be shining, and it will be a great time to get outside and enjoy the milder weather.

So stay safe on Monday morning, and then get ready to embrace the warmer week ahead. Spring is just around the corner! #FreezingRain #WarmerWeather #SpringIsComing

  • NOAA’s Update Climate Outlook Predicts A Warmer Spring For The East

The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center released an updated seasonal climate outlook for February, March, and April, seemingly predicting a warmer than normal spring for the East Coast, including up into New England.

Seasonal temperature outlook for February, March, & April
Seasonal temperature outlook for February, March, & April Credit: NOAA

Based on the outlook, deep southern states have a 50-60% chance of seeing above normal temperatures through late winter and early spring, while further north and along much of the East Coast has a 40-50% chance of seeing above normal temperatures throughout that period.

Only the far northwestern states have a chance of seeing colder than normal temperatures, with Washington state, northern Idaho, northern Montana, and a portion of northern North Dakota having a 40-50% chance of seeing below normal temperatures through February, March, and April.

On the precipitation side of things, the south and up into parts of the Rocky Mountains are likely to see below normal precipitation, with New Mexico sitting at 50-60% chance of below normal. Colorado is split down the middle, with southern Colorado at a 40-50% chance of below normal precipitation and northern Colorado at a 30-40% chance of below normal precipitation.

The Pacific Northwest and parts of the Midwest have some of the best chances to see above normal precipitation, with Washington state sitting at a 40-50% chance of above normal.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently released its Climate Outlook for the upcoming spring season, and the forecast is showing that the East Coast is likely to experience above-average temperatures.

This prediction comes as no surprise, as the East Coast has been experiencing milder winters and warmer springs in recent years due to climate change. NOAA’s update is based on a variety of factors, including sea surface temperatures, atmospheric patterns, and historical climate data.

While warmer temperatures may sound appealing to some, it’s important to remember that this could have significant impacts on the environment, agriculture, and public health. Warmer springs can lead to earlier blooms of plants, which could disrupt ecosystems and impact pollinators. Additionally, higher temperatures can exacerbate air pollution and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

As we prepare for the changing climate, it’s crucial to stay informed and take proactive measures to mitigate the effects of these warmer temperatures. Stay tuned for more updates from NOAA as we head into the spring season!
