Novak Djokovic has predicted that Carlos Alcaraz will complete the career Grand Slam “very soon” as he praised his young rival’s accomplishments.

Djokovic and Alcaraz are seeded seventh and third respectively at the 2025 Australian Open, and they could face off in a blockbuster quarter-final clash.
Alcaraz, 21, will become the youngest man to win each of the four Grand Slam tournaments if he triumphs at the ongoing Australian Open or either of the following two editions.

Alcaraz has made no secret of the fact he is targeting Djokovic’s records, with the all-time Grand Slam record a particular focus.
“Obviously, I keep thinking about Nole’s 24 Grand Slams, that’s clear,” Alcaraz admitted in February last year.
“I’m a very ambitious guy and I always want to think big, and I dream big — obviously Djokovic’s 24 is a goal at the end of my career.
“It is something that is inevitable to think about. I am very competitive and that is also what drives me to the highest level to try to be at the same level as the Big Three. The truth is that I dream big.”
In an interview with GQ, Djokovic addressed the prospect of Alcaraz, who has already won four majors, breaking his records.
“It’s too early. But, you know, people say my records will never be broken. I doubt that. I mean, Carlos could already be the next guy. Even Jannik [Sinner],” the former world No 1 said.
“If they take care of the body, if they do things in a proper way, focus on longevity, focus on the long-term, then they can do it.
“Carlos has done something no one has done in history for such a young age. So the odds are with him. He is going to complete his [career] Slam very soon.
“He’s even said himself, he wants to make history. He wants to be ‘the best in history.’ I respect that kind of mentality of, ‘Hey, I think I got the goods.’ But maybe it’s a little bit early for him to think about history.”

Like many words in politics, oligarchy originates from Ancient Greek and quite literally means that few command. But unlike an aristocracy, an oligarchy is more closely tied to wealth than nobility and family lineage.
The philosopher Aristotle wrote in his book “Politics” that “democracy is safer and more free from civil strife than oligarchy; for in oligarchies two kinds of strife spring up, faction between different members of the oligarchy and also faction between the oligarchs and the people.”
What are some examples of oligarchies?
Multiple countries have been labeled oligarchies by academics. After the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, former state assets and other institutions came under the control of increasingly wealthy businessmen who became known as billionaire oligarchs.
The mix of profits and politics that began under then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin gave way to crackdowns by President Vladimir Putin, who has his own favored oligarchs and pledged to let them keep their fortunes so long as they are loyal to him.
With its legacy of colonialism and powerful families, the Philippines has been accused of being an oligarchy, with its former President Rodrigo Duterte claiming to have dismantled the system. Critics said he simply gave preferences to a different set of oligarchs.
Apartheid-era South Africa was also seen by some academics as having a white racial oligarchy.
Even before Biden’s speech, the rising wealth gap in the United States — as well as in China — raised concerns about whether the world’s two largest economies were becoming oligarchies.

Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick says elevated roadways, bridges, and ramps would be the first to be shut down.
NEW ORLEANS — With a freeze coming to Southeast Louisiana early next week, and the chance of ice and snow along with it, the NOPD said it is planning to close roads early. The exact timing will depend on how quickly the frigid air moves into the area.
“I don’t want people already out there and then we close streets,” said Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick at a press conference Friday, “so I’m going to try to get ahead of it.”
She said elevated roadways, bridges, and ramps would be the first to be shut down, as they are the first to freeze in cold weather. The NOPD leaders gathered Friday referenced the winter storm of January 28, 2014 multiple times.
“We responded to numerous accidents, which in turn also caused police to be in harm’s way,” said Lt. Anthony Micheu.
That included the elevated portion of Highway 90, where many cars got stranded for days. Lt. Micheu said the same could happen again if more ice were to form on the roads.
“At certain points we will not be able to get the police onto these elevated portions because the vehicles will not make it up the bridge,” he said.
With that, the NOPD’s message to the public is simple– stay home if you are able. “This is the day for you to talk with your employers about whether or not your employer will allow you to stay home,” said Supt. Kirkpatrick.
WWL Louisiana also reached out to Louisiana State Police about the possibility of an interstate closure.
A spokesperson said “LSP will collaborate with DOTD to monitor the condition of the roadways and evaluate the need for any closures.” She added that “during the weather event, we will use our social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram) to disseminate the most up-to-date information.”

The first-look trailer indicates a physically larger system (along with a larger kickstand with more adjustable angles) that is slated for later this year. The new system will play both physical and digital Switch games in addition to Switch 2 exclusive titles. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden used his farewell address to the nation Wednesday to deliver stark warnings about an “oligarchy” of the ultra-wealthy taking root in the country and a “tech-industrial complex” that is infringing on Americans’ rights and the future of democracy.
Speaking from the Oval Office as he prepares to hand over power Monday to President-elect Donald Trump, Biden seized what is likely to be his final opportunity to address the country before he departs the White House to spotlight the accumulation of power and wealth in the U.S. among just a small few.
“Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead,” Biden said, drawing attention to “a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a few ultra-wealthy people and the dangerous consequences if their abuse of power is left unchecked.”
Invoking President Dwight Eisenhower’s warnings about the rise of a military-industrial complex when he left office in 1961, Biden added, “I’m equally concerned about the potential rise of a tech-industrial complex that could pose real dangers to our country as well.”
Biden used his 15-minute address to offer a model for a peaceful transfer of power and — without mentioning Trump by name — raise concerns about his successor.
It marked a striking admonition by Biden, who is departing the national stage after more than 50 years in public life, as he has struggled to define his legacy and to steel the country against the return of Trump to the Oval Office. Biden’s speech in the Oval Office is the latest in a series of remarks on domestic policy and foreign relations he has delivered that are intended to cement his legacy and reshape Americans’ grim views on his term. Earlier in the day, he heralded a long awaited ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which could end more than a year of bloodshed in the Middle East.
“It’ll take time to feel the full impact of what we’ve done together but the seeds are planted and they’ll grow and they’ll bloom for decades to come,” Biden said. It was a tacit acknowledgement that many Americans say they have yet to feel the impact of his trillions of dollars spent on domestic initiatives.
At the same time that Biden was criticizing social media companies for retreating from fact-checking on their platforms, Trump’s incoming communications director and press secretary were sharing posts on X that falsely claimed the president had delivered a prerecorded speech. Biden has blamed his poor standing with the public on misinformation on social media and the challenges he has faced reaching voters in the disaggregated modern media ecosystem.
Biden offered his own set of solutions for the problems that he laid out: change the tax code to ensure billionaires “pay their fair share,” eliminate the flow of hidden sources of money into political campaigns, establish 18-year term limits for members of the Supreme Court and ban members of Congress from trading stocks. His policy prescriptions come as his political capital is at its nadir as Biden prepares to exit the national stage, and after he has done little to advance those causes during his four years in power at the White House.

Biden pursued the presidency in 1988 and 2008 before becoming Barack Obama’s vice president. After serving two terms, Biden was considered to be retired from politics. But he returned to center stage as the unlikely Democratic nominee in 2020, successfully ousting Trump from the White House.

Why It Matters
The end of the latest five-year transit agreement, which saw gas flow from Russia to Europe via Ukraine, could significantly impact the Russian economy, which is still heavily reliant on energy exports.
While it will not entirely cut off the transport of Russian gas to the continent, which can still flow through the TurkStream pipeline and via shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the move will reportedly cost Gazprom nearly $5 billion annually, according to Reuters.
Eastern European countries that benefited from the agreement have also expressed concerns that the decision could lead to an energy crisis at home.
Residents of Transnistria, Moldova’s breakaway region that depends heavily on Russian gas, have already reported energy shortages following the implementation of the decision on January 1, according to the BBC.
What To Know
Following the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, gas continued to flow into Europe through Ukraine as a result of the 2019 agreement.
At a summit in Brussels in December, however, Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to end this deal, stating that Ukraine “won’t allow [Russia] to earn additional billion on our blood,” as quoted in Euro News.
“Ukraine did not want to renew the transit agreement because it benefits largely Gazprom and the Kremlin,” Martin Vladimirov, director of the Energy and Climate Program at the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD), told Newsweek. “Ukraine has been receiving $800 million annually, much lower than it should be getting under the terms of the expired transit agreement because Russia itself has cut the volume of transit gas since May 2022.”

Throughout the conflict, European Union members have also attempted to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels from Russia, contributing to the 2022 energy crisis.
The REPowerEU initiative, launched in May 2022, aimed to “phase out Russian fossil fuel imports” through diversifying supplies while accelerating the move toward clean energy.
As a result, the European Union says that Kyiv’s latest decision will not drastically impact gas supplies into the continent.
“The Commission has been working for more than a year specifically on preparing for a scenario without Russian gas transiting via Ukraine,” the European Commission told AFP on Tuesday.
Experts similarly believe that the continent has had sufficient time to adapt to the anticipated cutoff.
“Most of the Russian gas supply through Ukraine went to Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, Hungary and Italy,” according to Vladimirov, “but all of them have alternative import options, which is why there is no physical security of supply risks from the cessation of the transit contract.”
“The EU has had plenty of time to prepare for the end of Russian pipeline gas flows to European buyers,” Isaac Levi, a researcher at the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, told Newsweek.
“The region has had sufficient time to prepare for this adjustment, particularly the countries that remain dependent on these imports,” he added.

We remain committed to supporting that effort and the diversification of global energy supplies.”
Ukrainian Minister of Energy German Galushchenko said via the Ukrainian Energy Ministry on Telegram: “We stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses. Europe has already made a decision to abandon Russian gas. And the European initiative Repower EU provides for exactly what Ukraine has done today.”
Martin Vladimirov, director of the Energy and Climate Program at the Center for the Study of Democracy, told Newsweek: “Russia was earning around $6.5 billion annually from the Ukrainian transit, which is roughly a third of its total gas earnings from sales to Europe. It will be very difficult for Russia to reroute this gas to new destinations, which will significantly hit the state-owned company, Gazprom, a major taxpayer for the Russian economy.”
Isaac Levi, a researcher at the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, told Newsweek: “Despite the fact that Ukraine will no longer earn revenues for the transit of Russian gas through its territory, the losses faced by Russia’s struggling gas sector are expected to be far more substantial. Ukraine’s transit fee revenues are believed to barely cover the infrastructure maintenance and operational costs required to enable the flow of Russian gas to Europe.
“Ukraine decided not to renew the agreement as this provides significant finances to fuel the Kremlin war chest, valued at EUR 5.8 bn in 2024. Maintaining flows would be highly controversial and pose significant geopolitical risks. This would likely prompt many, including the new U.S. administration, to question Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.”
What Happens Next?
Europe will potentially need to adapt to the abrupt shortage in Russian gas, supplementing its supplies with LNG shipments from alternative sources, such as the U.S. and Qatar, as happened following Russia’s invasion.
On January 1, while celebrating the end of the agreement, Zelensky expressed his hopes for “an increase in the supply of American gas to Europe, as President Trump has already said.”

Former Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi warns Thiago Motta and the Bianconeri that ‘time is up’ as they must prove they are ‘obsessed’ to win.
Former Juventus midfielder Tacchinardi won the trophy several times during his playing career in Turin.
“Surely, the best one was in 2003. We played in a sold-out stadium in the USA with many Juventus fans, and most importantly, we beat Milan,” Tacchinardi told Gazzetta.
“It was a small revenge after the disappointment of the Champions League Final a few months earlier. That Supercoppa didn’t heal the wound, but it was a chance of redemption.”

Talking about the upcoming clash between Bianconeri and Rossoneri, Tacchinardi said: “Juventus are desperate for [a result] in a game like this. It’s in or out. The time is up. Now, the Bianconeri must understand that it’s time to be practical.
“The feeling is that this Juventus side still lack the obsession to win. Milan must be discovered; Conceiçao arrived only a few days ago.”
Juventus are unbeaten in Serie A, but have collected 11 draws in 18 matches. When asked whether he prefers Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic or Milan’s Alvaro Morata, Tacchinardi replied: “I’d keep Vlahovic, he is more of a centre-forward and has already scored 12 goals this season.
“I expect him to be decisive in the Supercoppa. I’ll rely on him and Yildiz, who can cause trouble for Milan with his skill sets. I wish Kenan and Dusan would lead Juventus to win the trophy.”
Former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has issued a warning to current manager Thiago Motta and the players, declaring that their time is up.

On X (fka Twitter), Reed reacted to a post about Flair expressing interest in returning for one more match. The 36-year-old claimed The Nature Boy might “die” if he gets hit with a Tsunami.
“People keep saying they want me to TSUNAMI him … yall really wanna watch someone die,” wrote Reed.

SmackDown Superstar Grayson Waller praised Bronson Reed and Rhea Ripley during a recent interview. Waller, Reed, and Ripley all hail from Australia and enjoyed quite a successful 2024.
Speaking to The West Sport, the former WWE Tag Team Champion reflected on Reed’s impressive performance in the last year and commented on how being part of the Men’s WarGames Match was a great opportunity for his countryman and that he had put in a great shift at the premium live event.
“Obviously, Rhea [Ripley] is who Rhea is. She’s already at the top of the company. But Bronson [Reed], I think the last few months, Bronson showed the world what we already knew about him. He’s one of the best, and he’s been in these prominent positions in that Bloodline match. So, that’s a huge opportunity and position for him, and I think he crushed it,” Waller said.
Reed will be sidelined for a few months after undergoing surgery for breaking his ankle during the Men’s WarGames Match at Survivor Series 2024. It remains to be seen when the former NXT North American Champion will return to WWE television.

Later in the episode, just before departing Cleveland for Chicago, Natalie asked the cast to vote on who they thought should go home for not doing enough. The majority vote went to Emma and Jazmin, with Natalie announcing that the two would ride the bus with the newbies while the OGs would decide their fate while flying on a private jet.
Natalie revealed that upon arrival in the next city, the cast members on the private jet would discuss Emma and Jazmin’s fate with her. In a confessional, Natalie expressed her concerns that Emma and Jazmin were not bringing enough excitement to the show, hinting that their time on the series might be limited.
“I had to let Emma and Jaz know you’re really giving boring, you’re falling behind, and it’s just like probably time for you guys to head up out of here,” said Natalie.

The latest episode of Baddies Midwest kicked off with a violent altercation between PrettyP and Badd Dolly, sparked by Dolly’s attempt to defend Summer. Ivori later expressed admiration for PrettyP, acknowledging that many cast members unfairly targeted her.

The conversation gained some heat, with Scotlynd and Emma engaging in a leg-split challenge as accusations of being boring flew.
