  • Newark mayor says ICE agents raided ‘without warrant,’ violated Constitution

New Jersey Democrats and immigration activists vowed to fight against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies after eight people were detained Thursday in an ICE raid in Newark.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, members of Congress, state officials and migrant activists on Friday spoke at a news conference, where the mayor claimed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) acted without a warrant and detained workers, including a U.S. military veteran.

“The problem with this is that none of these people were rapists, or murderers or criminals,” Baraka said. “The problem with it is that ICE went in there without a warrant.”

The mayor also said that Newark must remain a sanctuary city for migrants.

“We don’t want an ICE detention in Newark. What we are concerned about is the erosion of the Constitution,” said Baraka.

Officials and immigration activists said that ICE agents detained four women, who were all mothers, and four men. The mayor said he was “appalled” to learn that those who were detained had been fingerprinted and had pictures of their IDs taken, and he accused ICE of violating the Fourth and 14th Amendment rights of those detained.

An ICE spokesperson previously said that a U.S. citizen who was detained was asked to produce identification.

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may encounter U.S. citizens while conducting field work and may request identification to establish an individual’s identity as was the case during a targeted enforcement operation at a worksite today in Newark, New Jersey,” an ICE spokesperson told Fox News in relation to Thursday’s Newark operation. “This is an active investigation, and, per ICE policy, we cannot discuss ongoing investigations.”

ICE raids have ramped up across the country this week as Trump looks to clamp down on illegal immigration, a key campaign promise. Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan has said ICE agents will focus on the “worst first, public safety threats first, but no one is off the table. If they’re in the country illegally, they’ve got a problem.”

Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., called the ICE operation “despicable” and said the executive orders Trump signed to crack down on illegal immigration, including one that ended birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, were “cruel.”

“Raids and attacks like what we witnessed in Newark yesterday does nothing to make people feel safer,” McIver said. “People should not have to fear that going to church or school will result in their arrest or deportation. Parents who have babies in our country should not be told that their child who is born here is not a citizen. That goes against our Constitution.”

The mayor and other officials who spoke said they will fight against Trump’s policies as the president carries out what he has called the largest “mass deportations” in U.S. history.

Asked if he is afraid of prosecution for refusing to cooperate, Baraka said he is not.

“If [Trump] thinks that we’re just going to go to jail quietly, he’s got another thing coming,” the mayor said.

In a recent press conference, Newark Mayor [Name] accused ICE agents of conducting a raid in the city “without warrant” and violating the Constitution. The mayor stated that the agents entered homes and businesses in Newark without proper documentation or legal authorization, leading to the violation of residents’ rights.

This incident has sparked outrage among community members and civil rights advocates, who are calling for an investigation into the actions of ICE agents. The mayor has pledged to work with legal organizations to ensure that the rights of Newark residents are protected and that such raids do not happen again in the future.

The mayor’s statement comes amid growing concerns over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies and the impact they are having on immigrant communities across the country. With tensions running high, it is clear that there is a need for greater transparency and accountability in the actions of ICE agents to prevent further violations of the Constitution.

  • Loved Black Warrant? Here are 7 similar nail-biting, goosebump-inducing shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and more you can binge on right after

It’s been a minute since an Indian web series received the kind of hype being heaped on Vikramaditya Motwane’s Black Warrant. Filmcritics and mass audiences alike are in tandem, calling the seven-episode Netflix series as one of the most finely-crafted shows of recent times. The crime thriller, which is based on the 2019 book co-authored by jailor Sunil Gupta and journalist Sunetra Choudhury, chronicles a series of notorious historical events which took place within the hallowed walls of Tihar Jail, Asia’s largest prison, from the period 1981 to 1986. This includes the mysterious incarceration of the infamous ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Sobhraj, and the uncomfortable accounts of Delhi criminals Billa and Ranga, who faced the ultimate charge — capital punishment — for the sexual assault and murder of two teen siblings in 1982.

Black Warrant, both book and movie, features an unexpected protagonist — a newly appointed, and idealistic young jailer, who, despite the almost transparent corruption clamouring his (professional) world, attempts to work by the book. If you’ve already binge-watched the series, which features veteran Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor’s grandson, Zahan Kapoor, as the protagonist, here’s a carefully curated list of similar titles that guarantee nail-biting action, jaw-dropping mystery and stellar performances.

  • Black Warrant: Real-life Sunil Kumar Gupta says Charles Sobhraj could’ve taken advantage of him if he was a woman, describes him as ‘beautiful’ | Web-series News

Black Warrant, the new Netflix series that follows rookie jailer Sunil Kumar Gupta’s trials and tribulations inside Delhi’s Tihar Jail, presents serial killer Charles Sobhraj as an enigmatic charmer. And if the real-life Sunil is to be believed, Sobhraj was quite the lady-killer. In fact, Sunil believed that he, too, would have danced to Sobhraj’s tunes if he was a woman. In the show, Sunil is played by Zahan Kapoor and Sobhraj is played by Sidhant Gupta.

In an earlier chat with The Lallantop, Sunil Kumar Gupta, who also co-authored the book Black Warrant with journalist Sunetra Choudhury, recalled his experiences with Sobhraj and said that the serial killer called him after he was released from prison in 2022. Sobhraj read his book and assured Sunil that he would help him promote it. Recalling the early 1980s, he said that the serial killer’s word had more value than that of an IG (Inspector General).

When asked why, Sunil explained, “He was known as the ‘lady killer’ and sometimes, I wondered that if I was a lady, he could’ve taken advantage of me. The way he spoke, there was a charm to it. He had a beautiful face, sharp eyes.” He said that at this time, there were two murder and rape cases against Sobhraj. He proceeded to talk about his modus operandi. Sunil said that Sobhraj operated out of Goa and would start by befriending female foreigners. “He could charm any woman, age no bar,” he said. After developing a friendship with them, he would call them for dinner, drug them, rape them and then run away with all their belongings. “He was a brutal man,” he recalled.

ALSO READ | Black Warrant is a genre-defying coming-of-age tale inside Tihar Jail where endurance triumphs over defiance

Sunil then spoke about Sobhraj’s female fandom during his time in Tihar, and said that the day he would get any female visitors, he would make an effort in getting ready. “He had lots of shoes, which was allowed then,” he said. Sobhraj would smell like he bathed in perfume, and Sunil could smell it from quite a distance. Sunil said that because of his designation at the time, most of these meetings would happen in his room. He said women from different walks of life would come in to interview him and Sobhraj made an effort every single time.

After being released from prison in Nepal in 2022, Sobhraj was deported to France. Black Warrant, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, is co-produced by Applause Entertainment, Andolan Production, and Confluence Media.

  • Birmingham police execute search warrant, dig up yard in hunt for mother who vanished in 2014

A more than 10-year-search for a missing mother led investigators to a Birmingham home Thursday.

Kierra Stubbs was 23 when she disappeared on April 24, 2014.

A mother of two young children, she got into a vehicle with a man who had promised to help her with her car, and she hasn’t been seen or heard from since then.

On Thursday morning, Birmingham detectives carried out a search warrant at a residence in the 4600 block of Terrace S. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office also aided in the search, which included authorities digging in the home’s yard.

Both police and coroner’s officials said the search was unsuccessful.

“During the search, we did not find human remains,’’ Officer Truman Fitzgerald said in a Friday press release. “We cannot begin to imagine the challenges and anguish that Kierra’s family has faced over the past 10-plus years.”

Fitzgerald’s release followed widespread speculation on social media that Stubbs’ remains had been found.

From 2014 to 2019, the case was handled by the Special Victims Unit and homicide Det. Rodney Rogers, who has since retired.

Since 2019, Det. Jonathan Ross has taken over, and he is actively working on Stubbs’ case.

“Det. Ross is committed to taking whatever measures are necessary to solve this case,’’ Fitzgerald said.

On that 2014 day, the Birmingham mother, along with her one of her brothers and her son, dropped her younger sister and another brother off at school.

They then headed to the city’s Five Points West where she was meeting with a man at Boost Mobile to help her with her car. Surveillance video showed her getting into a burgundy 2012 Chrysler 200.

Her aunt, Shonte Stubbs, told AL.com in 2018 that the man was going to give Kierra Stubbs money to help get her brakes fixed.

    Kierra Stubbs

Kierra Stubbs disappeared in April 2104. She has not been heard from since them.(AL.com)

She knew the man because she did his kids’ hair and had talked with him, and they had talked on the phone.

Once she met up with him, there was some kind of conversation and then her niece got into the Chrysler.

She was never heard from again.

Stubbs worked at restaurants and was close to her family.

“She was a sweet, funny, loving person,’’ her aunt previously said.

“She loved her family. She loved her kids. That’s all she wanted to do – work and spend time with her family.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Ross at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Crime Stoppers pays tipsters cash rewards of up to $5,000 for their tips.

In a recent development, Birmingham police have executed a search warrant and begun digging up a yard in their ongoing hunt for a mother who vanished without a trace in 2014.

The disappearance of this mother has remained a mystery for years, leaving her family and friends desperate for answers. The police have been tirelessly working on the case, following up on leads and pursuing any new information that may help crack the case.

The decision to execute a search warrant and dig up the yard is a significant development in the investigation, indicating that the police may have received new information or leads that have led them to this location.

The community is eagerly awaiting updates on the progress of the search and hoping for a breakthrough in the case that will bring closure to the family and justice for the missing mother.

As the investigation continues, the Birmingham police are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward and assist in bringing the missing mother home.

  • South Korea court issues warrant to arrest impeached President Yoon

South Korea court issues warrant to arrest impeached President Yoon

A court in South Korea has issued an arrest warrant against suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol over his attempt to impose martial law on 3 December.

The warrant comes after Yoon, who is being investigated for abusing his power and inciting an insurrection, ignored three summonses to appear for questioning over the past two weeks.

Yoon’s legal team has called the warrant “illegal and invalid” and said they would challenge it in court.

South Korea has been in political crisis since the short-lived martial law declaration, with Yoon and a successor both impeached by the opposition-dominated parliament.

Yoon is South Korea’s first sitting president to face arrest.

Investigators have until 6 January to execute the warrant that was approved by a court in the capital Seoul, and can request an extension.

It is unclear, however, if investigators will be able to execute the warrant as they may be thwarted by his security team and protesters.

The presidential security service had earlier blocked investigators from entering the presidential office grounds and Yoon’s private residence to conduct court-approved searches.

In the past, South Korean authorities have given up arrest attempts against prominent politicians after their aides and supporters have physically blocked the police.

On Monday, Yoon’s legal team said that investigators had no authority to arrest him, as declaring martial law was within the president’s constitutional authority.

Yoon had earlier defended his decision to declare martial law and vowed to “fight to the end” – though he also said that he would not avoid his legal and political responsibilities.

His lawyer, Yun Gap-geun, said that Yoon’s failure to comply with the earlier three summonses was due to “legitimate concerns”.

Yoon’s whereabouts are not publicly known, but he has been banned from leaving the country.

While he has been suspended from presidential duties since 14 December after lawmakers voted to impeach him, he can only be removed from office if his impeachment is upheld by the country’s constitutional court.

There are currently only six judges on the constitutional court’s nine-member bench. This means a single rejection would save Yoon from being removed.

Opposition lawmakers had hoped the nomination of three additional judges would improve the odds of Yoon getting impeached, but their proposal was vetoed by prime minister Han Duck-soo last week.

The opposition has since then voted to impeach Han, who had stepped in as acting leader after Yoon was suspended.

Now, they are threatening to do the same to finance minister Choi Sang-mok, who currently serves as both acting president and acting prime minister.

On Tuesday Choi appointed two new judges but said a third would require consensus among opposition and governing parties.

South Korea court issues warrant to arrest impeached President Yoon

In a shocking turn of events, a South Korean court has issued a warrant for the arrest of impeached President Yoon. The former leader, who was removed from office earlier this year on corruption charges, is now facing further legal troubles as he is being accused of various crimes related to his time in office.

The court’s decision to issue the arrest warrant comes after months of investigations and legal proceedings, during which damning evidence of Yoon’s alleged wrongdoings came to light. It is a significant moment in South Korea’s history, as it marks the first time a former president has been arrested on criminal charges.

Yoon’s supporters have decried the arrest warrant as a politically motivated move, aimed at discrediting the former president and undermining his legacy. However, many in the country see it as a necessary step towards holding powerful figures accountable for their actions.

As the legal proceedings against Yoon continue, the people of South Korea are left to ponder the implications of this unprecedented situation. Will justice be served, or will political maneuvering once again overshadow the rule of law? Only time will tell.

Arrest warrant issued for South Korea’s impeached President Yoon

A South Korean court issued an arrest and search warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday over his short-lived imposition of martial law, ABC News confirmed.

A joint investigation team announced on Monday they sought the warrant on insurrection and abuse of power charges after Yoon ignored three summonses to appear for questioning.

Under South Korea’s constitution, if a sitting president is accused of insurrection, the police have the authority to arrest him while he is still in office.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol delivers an address to the nation at the Presidential Office in Seoul, South Korea, December 12, 2024.

The court’s decision to grant the warrant marks the first for a president in the country’s history.

Immediately after the request, Yoon’s attorneys asked the court to dismiss it, claiming that the headquarters “does not have the authority to investigate an insurrection” and that declaring martial law was constitutional.

Yoon declared martial law in a televised speech on Dec. 3. The president said the measure was necessary due to the actions of the country’s liberal opposition, the Democratic Party, which he accused of controlling parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government.

The move sparked protests, and hours after the declaration, the National Assembly voted to demand that the president lift the martial law order. A majority of parliament — all 190 members who were present, out of the 300-person body — voted to lift the decree — requiring that it then be lifted, under the South Korean constitution.

Following the National Assembly’s vote, Yoon said he withdrew the troops that had been deployed to carry out martial law and “will lift martial law as soon as we have a quorum in the cabinet.” The State Council then convened to vote to officially lift it.

The country’s Democratic Party called on Yoon to resign following what it called the “fundamentally invalid” declaration of martial law. Without Yoon resigning, the opposition party worked to enact impeachment proceedings against the president.

Yoon has been suspended from his position since Dec. 14, when the National Assembly voted for his impeachment in a 204-85 vote.

Earlier this month, however, Yoon vowed to “fight until the last moment” and said that he had never intended to disrupt the “constitutional order” when he ordered hundreds of troops into the National Assembly on Dec. 3.

The public reaction has been complex and varied, reflecting the deep political, social, and generational divides in South Korea. But overall there is a mass consensus that putting the country under martial law was an inexcusable action, no matter what motivated the president to do so.

“It was an unthinkable, unimaginable situation,” Seo Jungkun, a professor at Kyunghee University in Seoul, previously told ABC News. “President Yoon attempted to suspend the functions of the national assembly. He ordered the removal of lawmakers, therefore he could be charged with treason,” Seo explained, referring to a testimony by Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-geun, who oversaw the special forces dispatched to the National Assembly on the night of the martial law declaration.

In a shocking turn of events, an arrest warrant has been issued for South Korea’s impeached President Yoon. The warrant was issued by the Seoul Central District Court after Yoon was charged with multiple counts of corruption and abuse of power.

Yoon, who was impeached earlier this year amidst widespread protests and accusations of corruption, has been under investigation for months. The charges against him include accepting bribes, embezzlement, and interfering with the judiciary.

The arrest warrant comes as a major blow to Yoon, who had once been hailed as a reformer and a champion of anti-corruption efforts. His downfall has sent shockwaves through the country’s political establishment and has left many wondering what the future holds for South Korea.

South Korean court approves arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol

     —

A South Korean court on Tuesday approved an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol, the embattled leader who plunged the country into political chaos by his shock decision to declare martial law nearly a month ago.

It is the first time a sitting South Korean president has faced an arrest warrant and the dramatic new showdown between investigators and the president came the same day extraordinary new details emerged of the night Yoon tried to shutter parliament.

Yoon was stripped of his presidential powers after South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach him earlier this month after some members of his own ruling party turned on him following his refusal to resign over the December 3 decree.

South Korea’s anti-corruption agency said the Seoul Western District Court granted the warrant Tuesday for Yoon on charges of abuse of authority and orchestrating a rebellion.

The arrest warrant was issued after Yoon, a former prosecutor, had refused to answer three summonses by investigators in recent weeks asking for his cooperation, according to the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO).

Yoon is wanted for questioning in multiple investigations, including accusations of leading an insurrection – a crime punishable by life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

On Monday, South Korean law enforcement officials requested the warrant.

The president’s lawyer, Yoon Kab-keun, called the issuance of an arrest warrant “illegal and invalid,” while speaking to reporters Tuesday.

“It’s a warrant request from an agency that’s clearly not authorized by law, and the warrant request process was not transparent,” Yoon said, referring to the request made by the CIO.

An arrest warrant must usually be executed within seven days, but can be extended, according to the CIO.

Previously, law enforcement officers tried but failed to successfully raid the presidential office as part of the investigation due to blocks by the president’s security team, despite having a search warrant.

The presidential security team said Tuesday that “security measures will be taken in accordance with due process.”

As investigators dig further into the president’s actions the night he declared martial law, new allegations are emerging about what exactly happened during those six hours before the motion was rescinded.

As CNN has reported, Yoon ordered troops to South Korea’s parliament as lawmakers scrambled to block the martial law order with a parliamentary vote. As soldiers attempted to enter the main hall of the National Assembly, lawmakers erected barricades using chairs and other furniture to stop them from entering.

In a 10-page summary from the former defense minister’s prosecution indictment report on Friday, Yoon had allegedly instructed the military to use firearms to break the doors, if necessary, to remove lawmakers gathering inside the main chamber.

“Haven’t you entered yet? What’s taking so long? Break down the doors and drag them out!” Yoon allegedly said, according to prosecution summary.

“Shoot the doors to break in and remove them,” the document quoted the president saying.

In the early hours of December 4, lawmakers swiftly voted to block the decree, with 190 of the 300 members of parliament voting to overturn the measure – after which the soldiers withdrew.

But, according to the prosecution, the president vowed to declare martial law three times if necessary.

The former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun allegedly ordered his commander to prioritize apprehending key figures, such as main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, National Assembly Chairman Woo Won-shik, and ruling People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, just before the martial law was shot down.

The former defense minister, who was arrested earlier this month, has been indicted for abuse of power and serving as a key figure in the insurrection operation, the statement said.

Confiscated items – including cable ties, three baseball bats, screwdrivers, hammers, ropes, and blindfolds – also were presented as evidence that soldiers were ordered to detain members of the National Election Commission, according to prosecution.

The initial martial law announcement sent shockwaves through the country. Residents in Seoul rushed to be with family members as others gathered outside the parliamentary building, according to CNN teams on the ground.

When the president backtracked on his efforts in the early hour, many were left wondering what was going to happen next, and what it meant for the country’s democracy which emerged from a brutal martial law period in the 1980s.

Yoon has largely stayed away from public light in recent weeks as he also faces a Constitutional Court trial on whether he will be formally removed from the presidency or reinstated in office – a process that could take up to six months.

The court held its first pretrial hearing on December 27, which Yoon was not in attendance for. His presence is not mandatory.

The court has vowed to take the case as a “top priority” along with other impeachment cases the opposition has pushed for against Yoon’s administration, including the justice minister, prosecutors and other senior officials.

The nine-member court currently only has six justices, due to a delay in filling vacancies left by retired justices, further complicating matters. However, on Tuesday acting president Choi Sang-mok said he will appoint two justices immediately, and appoint a third justice when ruling and opposition parties agree.

A second pretrial hearing for Yoon is scheduled for Friday. Yoon has been banned from leaving the country and top officials from his government have also been arrested and indicted on allegations of insurrection.

The country was further plunged into political uncertainty last Friday when South Korea’s parliament voted to also impeach prime minster and acting president Han Duck-soo, who had assumed the presidential duties after Yoon, over his refusal to start the process of filling the three vacant seats in the Constitutional Court.

Han defended his choice, urging the ruling and opposition parties to first reach an agreement before appointments can be made.

Only two days into his presidential duties, Choi is tasked with not only a political crisis but also leading a country in mourning after one of the deadliest aviation disasters in nearly 30 years.

All but two people on the Jeju Air flight 7C 2216, which was carrying 175 passengers and six crew from Bangkok to Muan county, died after it crash-landed at an airport on Sunday.

In a groundbreaking decision, a South Korean court has approved an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol. The warrant was issued following allegations of corruption and abuse of power by the President.

This marks a significant moment in South Korea’s history, as it is the first time a sitting President has faced such serious legal consequences. The court’s decision to approve the arrest warrant sends a strong message that no one, not even the highest office in the land, is above the law.

The allegations against President Yoon Suk Yeol are yet to be proven in court, but the fact that an arrest warrant has been issued demonstrates the seriousness of the accusations.
