Vance and Duffy Echo Trump in Blaming D.E.I. for Crash Near Washington
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Vice President JD Vance joined President Trump on Sunday in blaming diversity hiring practices at the Federal Aviation Administration for the midair collision of a commercial jet and a military helicopter near Washington last week.
“The person at the controls didn’t have enough staffing around him or her because we were turning people away because of D.E.I. reasons,” Mr. Vance said on Fox News, using the abbreviation for diversity, equity and inclusion. “D.E.I. policies have led our air traffic controllers to be short staffed — that is a scandal.”
On Thursday, Mr. Trump, without evidence, linked his long-running complaints about diversity hiring practices to the crash near Ronald Reagan National Airport. The president quoted from the F.A.A. website, which he said had indicated that the agency was looking to hire people with disabilities.
No evidence suggests that diversity hiring programs contributed to the crash on Wednesday night. Those programs — some of which started or continued under Mr. Trump’s first term — followed the same aptitude, medical and security standards used for hiring candidates without disabilities.
In 2019, for example, a pilot program that the F.A.A. began for hiring 20 people with disabilities emphasized that those candidates would “receive the same rigorous consideration” as those considered for “a standard public opening for air traffic controller jobs.”
But on Sunday, Mr. Duffy suggested without offering evidence that efforts to diversify hiring had affected the quality of the work force at air traffic control towers.
“You can’t focus on diversity, equity and inclusion when you try to hire air traffic controllers,” Mr. Duffy said on Fox News. “You focus on the best and the brightest.”
Michael McCormick, a former vice president of the F.A.A. Air Traffic Organization who oversaw hiring of controllers during his tenure from 2011 to 2015, said in an interview that Mr. Trump, Mr. Vance and Mr. Duffy were making “baseless claims.” He characterized diversity programs as a recruitment tool for reaching out to candidates with minority backgrounds and said they did not compromise hiring standards.
When the F.A.A. makes a hiring decision after air traffic controller candidates go through training, he said, the agency “does not take into account gender, age, race, creed, color” but solely considers “the merits and the abilities of the individual.” Mr. McCormick worked for the F.A.A. for more than three decades and now teaches at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
On Sunday, Mr. Duffy also criticized the Biden administration for changing some aviation terms such as cockpit and Notice to Airmen — the system notifying air industry members of potential hazards — to more gender-neutral terms such as flight deck and Notice to Air Mission. He suggested without offering evidence that such changes had shifted focus away from ensuring the highest levels of aviation safety.
“When you don’t focus on safety and you focus on social justice or the environment, bad things happen,” Mr. Duffy said on CNN.
Senator Eric Schmitt, Republican of Missouri, echoed the Trump administration officials in pinning the blame on diversity and inclusion programs for low staffing, and claimed that a focus on such programs hurt recruitment and retention.
“D.E.I. is poison,” Mr. Schmitt said on NBC. “Merit has taken a back seat to quotas.”
But no such quotas exist for hiring air traffic controllers, Mr. McCormick said. Recent staffing shortages around the nation’s air traffic towers have been caused by years of employee turnover, lack of funding and difficulties with in-person training during the coronavirus pandemic, not by diversity hiring practices.
In the wake of the tragic crash near Washington D.C., Senators Vance and Duffy are echoing President Trump’s sentiment by blaming diversity, equity, and inclusion (D.E.I.) initiatives for the incident. The two lawmakers have been vocal opponents of such programs, arguing that they prioritize identity politics over meritocracy and safety.Their remarks have sparked outrage and backlash from critics who argue that D.E.I. is not to blame for the crash, but rather systemic issues such as reckless driving and inadequate infrastructure. Many are calling for a more nuanced and evidence-based approach to addressing the root causes of such incidents, rather than scapegoating marginalized communities.
As the debate rages on, it is clear that the conversation around D.E.I. and its impact on society is far from over. It remains to be seen how lawmakers and the public will navigate these complex and contentious issues in the future.

Before becoming a chart-topping singer, 22-year-old Benson Boone was known for his talent in the classroom and onstage.
MONROE, Wash. — This Sunday, all eyes will be on the 2025 Grammy Awards, and a small town in Washington will be cheering on one of its own. Benson Boone is from Monroe and is nominated in the Best New Artist category, marking a major milestone in his rising music career.
Boone, 22, was born and raised in Monroe, where he attended Monroe High School and honed his passion for music. Before becoming a chart-topping singer, Boone was known for his talent in the classroom and onstage — particularly during his senior year, when he starred as Buddy in the local school’s production of “Elf.”
His natural stage presence was clear from the start.
“He just shines in front of humans,” said Stephen Loewen, the teacher who cast and directed Boone in the play.
Long before his Grammy nod, Boone was known for his backflips, a hobby his dad, Nate Boone, says he started at just 3 years old.
“We just could never stop from having him do backflips off the couch or flips wherever he could,” Nate Boone told KING 5 over the phone.
But it wasn’t until later in high school that Boone discovered his passion for singing. After performing in the school’s “Battle of the Bands” competition, he realized music was his true calling. He went on to compete on “American Idol,” while amassing a sizeable following on Tiktok. His rising presence caught the attention of Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons. Boone soon signed with Reynolds’ record label, launching him into a whirlwind music career that included a world tour and opening for Taylor Swift.
For Boone, his roots in Washington are never far from his mind. Last spring, he awarded two local seniors his namesake Benson Boone Scholarship, reinforcing his commitment to supporting the community that helped shape him.
“Washington – we all love it here,” Nate Boone shared with KING 5, expressing excitement at the possibility of his son returning to perform in his home state after earning Grammy recognition.
As the 22-year-old continues to rise in the music world, those who have known him for years believe there is much more to come. “He’s got years ahead of him of a successful career,” Loewen added.
In Monroe, it’s clear that the excitement for Benson Boone’s success goes beyond the Grammy nomination. His journey from a small-town high school to the biggest stage in music serves as an inspiration to others in his community.
For now, all eyes are on the Grammys — but Benson Boone’s story is just getting started.
“He hasn’t stopped writing. He’s still putting out new work. And just seeing the stuff he’s continuing to create and the emotions he’s continuing to tap into, is enormous. And I think he’s really he’s connecting with so many different humans on so many different levels,” said Loewen.
His former Student Leadership teacher at Monroe High School, Jaime Johnson, said Benson Boone still exemplifies the qualities that matter most– even after his rise to fame.
“He’s also incredibly humble. He doesn’t realize all the talent that he has at all times,” said Johnson. “He’s also very loyal to, like, his group and to his people.”
She added, “I would say, as he’s at the Grammys, like… just to enjoy it! And to take it all in, you know? And just be present, yeah. And show love, win or lose… he’s gonna win eventually. If he doesn’t win this time, he will later.”
Rising artist Benson Boone is making waves in the music industry, and his western Washington hometown couldn’t be prouder. The talented singer-songwriter has been gaining attention for his soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, and now he’s setting his sights on the ultimate prize: a Grammy award.Benson’s journey to stardom has been nothing short of inspiring. Growing up in a small town in western Washington, he always had a passion for music. He started writing songs at a young age and honed his craft by performing at local open mic nights and talent shows. His hard work paid off when he caught the attention of music industry insiders, who were impressed by his raw talent and undeniable star quality.
Now, Benson is on the fast track to success, with his debut album receiving critical acclaim and earning him a loyal fan base. His powerful voice and emotional lyrics have struck a chord with listeners around the world, and he’s quickly becoming a household name in the music industry.
As Benson’s star continues to rise, his western Washington hometown is rallying behind him, cheering him on every step of the way. The community is buzzing with excitement as they watch one of their own chase his dreams and make a name for himself on the global stage.
With his sights set on a Grammy award, Benson Boone is proving that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and a whole lot of talent. And as he continues to dazzle audiences with his music, his hometown is bursting with pride, knowing that they played a part in shaping the career of a future music legend.

Bronny James receives big ovations during Lakers’ road win in Washington
Bronny James plays the entire 4th quarter and scores 5 points, including a 3-point play for the 2nd bucket of his NBA career.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Even on the road, Bronny James was quite a crowd favorite.
Fans in Washington chanted for LeBron James’ son early and often, and with the Los Angeles Lakers way ahead of the Wizards on Thursday night, the younger James played the entire fourth quarter of his team’s 134-96 victory.
Bronny James scored a career-high five points. He shot only 1-for-6 from the field, but he made a driving layup while being fouled and converted the free throw for a three-point play.
Bronny got MVP chants in DC pic.twitter.com/VS9GASEOwb
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) January 31, 2025
“He did a lot of really good things tonight. I thought he made a couple really nice passes,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “Defensively he was great. It’s building blocks for every young player, and I think tonight was a good, positive building block for him.”
James’ night also included an air ball from 3-point range, two rebounds, two assists and two fouls. He came up with a steal and made a nice long pass to Dalton Knecht for a dunk. Shortly after his lone field goal, James drove to the basket again and lobbed an alley-oop to Christian Koloko for a dunk.
James closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws in the final seconds — and received an “MVP! MVP!” chant from the crowd.
“He’s had eyeballs on him his whole life. He’s used to it,” Redick said. “I remember not playing a lot my rookie year and second year. The Orlando fans would sometimes chant that in a blowout in the fourth quarter — ‘We want JJ’ — and it’s a weird feeling. There’s that audible sort of anticipation every time you shoot the ball. It’s a lot.
“He has handled everything with dignity, grace, class, all that stuff. He’ll continue to grow.”
Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, received thunderous ovations from fans during the Los Angeles Lakers’ road win against the Washington Wizards. The young basketball prodigy, who is currently a junior in high school, was in attendance to support his father and the Lakers as they battled the Wizards at the Capital One Arena. Bronny was spotted sitting courtside, cheering on his dad and the team throughout the game.
As the cameras panned to Bronny in the stands, fans erupted in applause and cheers, showing their support for the budding star. The crowd’s reaction was a testament to the growing popularity and star power of the 17-year-old, who has been making waves in the basketball world with his impressive skills and potential.
Despite not being on the court, Bronny’s presence was felt and appreciated by fans, teammates, and his father, who expressed his pride and gratitude for his son’s support. The ovations and attention that Bronny received during the game only further solidified his status as a rising star in the basketball world.
As the Lakers secured a crucial road win against the Wizards, Bronny’s presence and the support he received served as a reminder of the bright future ahead for the James family and the basketball world as a whole. The ovations for Bronny were well-deserved and only added to the excitement and anticipation surrounding his promising career.

Their lead didn’t last, not after the Wolves finished off the first quarter with a 9-0 run of their own, led by the energy — and playmaking — provided by new supersubs Rob Dillingham and Jaylen Clark.
That brought them within 27-26 at quarter’s end before …
The Wizards countered by punching back, building back a quick 38-31 fueled by more three-pointers. They led 50-43 midway through the second quarter before the Wolves, with Ingles on the floor, answered back to pull within 52-50 with less than 2 ½ minutes left before halftime.
When the Wolves took a very brief 57-56 lead with 56 seconds before halftime, the Wizards’ Bilal Coulibaly drew two free throws and made both with 7.7 seconds left for a 58-57 halftime lead.
In a disappointing turn of events, the Minnesota Timberwolves fell short against the Washington Wizards as rookie sensation Anthony Edwards was sidelined due to illness. Despite putting up a valiant effort, the Timberwolves were unable to secure a victory, ultimately succumbing to a 115-107 defeat. The absence of Edwards, who has been a key contributor for the Timberwolves this season, was sorely felt as the team struggled to find their rhythm on both ends of the court. Without his scoring prowess and energy on the floor, the Timberwolves were unable to keep pace with the Wizards, who took advantage of their depleted roster.
While it was a tough loss for the Timberwolves, they will need to regroup and bounce back quickly as they look to make a push for the playoffs. With Edwards expected to return to action soon, the team will be hoping to get back on track and continue their pursuit of a postseason berth.
Despite this setback, the Timberwolves remain a team on the rise, with a promising young core led by Edwards. Fans can expect to see more exciting performances from this talented squad as they look to make their mark in the competitive Western Conference.

What to Know
The Timberwolves will be playing the full four quarters on Saturday, but they’re expected to have things wrapped up well before that. They will host the Washington Wizards at 8:00 p.m. ET at Target Center. The Wizards are crawling into this contest hobbled by 16 consecutive losses, while the Timberwolves will bounce in with five consecutive wins.
The Timberwolves are headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They were the clear victor by a 138-113 margin over the Jazz on Thursday. Minnesota pushed the score to 101-75 by the end of the third, a deficit Utah cut but never quite recovered from.
Anthony Edwards was a one-man wrecking crew for the Timberwolves as he shot 6-for-9 from deep and dropped a double-double on 36 points and 11 assists. That’s the most assists Edwards has posted since back in January of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Rudy Gobert, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Timberwolves were working as a unit and finished the game with 38 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as the Jazz only posted 21.
Meanwhile, it’s never fun to lose, and it’s even less fun to lose 134-96, which was the final score in the Wizards’ tilt against the Lakers on Thursday. Washington was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 78-45.
Minnesota is on a roll lately: they’ve won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 26-21 record this season. As for Washington, their loss dropped their record down to 6-40.
Keep an eye on the arc in Saturday’s matchup: The Timberwolves have been dynamite from deep this season, having nailed 38.7% of their threes per game. It’s a different story for the Wizards, though, as they’ve only made 32.7% of their threes this season. Given the Timberwolves’ sizable advantage in that area, the Wizards will need to find a way to close that gap.
The Timberwolves strolled past the Wizards in their previous meeting back in January by a score of 120-106. Will the Timberwolves repeat their success, or do the Wizards have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.
Odds

NoVa Caps ranks the possibility of players and other assets being moved by the Washington Capitals, who could be big buyers as they currently lead the NHL with a 34-11-5 record this season and want to give captain Alex Ovechkin a shot at a second Stanley Cup before his contract expires on July 1, 2026.
** NOTE: Any player who played an NHL game this season or is currently on long-term injured reserve is included
Untouchable
- Ovechkin (two years left on contract, $9.5 million cap hit, 10-team no-movement clause) — The 39-year-old is averaging over a point-per-game (37 in 35) and leads Washington with 23 goals despite missing 16 games with a broken leg. The team is building around Ovechkin as he is 19 goals away from breaking the all-time record, so why would they trade him?
- C Dylan Strome (four, $5 million cap hit) — Strome, who will turn 28 on Trade Deadline day, is once again in the midst of a career year (15-34-49 in 51), where he has established himself as a top-line center. He is on a bargain of a contract and will be looked up to heavily in a rebuild after Ovechkin hangs up his skates.
- RW Tom Wilson (seven, $6.5 million cap hit, 14-team no-trade clause) — The 30-year-old has bounced back and is having the best season of his NHL career as he is four goals shy of his personal best (24 set in 78 games in 2021-22) and 16 points back of his career-high (52 in 2021-22). In addition to his scoring and physicality, Wilson is a huge part of the Capitals’ culture and could be the team’s next captain.
- C Connor McMichael (two, $2.1 million cap hit) — The 24-year-old is on a very team-friendly contract and has already set a career high with 36 points in 50 games. McMichael, who already tied his previous career high of 18 which was set in 80 outings last season, is part of Washington’s younger core and has cemented his place as a top-six forward this season.
- C Aliaksei Protas (five, $3.375 million cap hit) — The 24-year-old has had a breakout season as his 21 goals are ranked second on Washington and 43 points are just six behind Strome for the team lead. He has fit in beautifully in Washington’s top-six forward group and has an excellent frame at 6’6”, 225 pounds.
Staying put
- C Pierre-Luc Dubois (seven, $8.5 million cap hit, no-movement clause) — The 26-year-old has bounced back in his first season in Washington as he already has six more assists (30) and one more point than the 40 he tallied in 82 games with the Los Angeles Kings last season. His .5736 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage and .5699 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage are both the best among all Capitals to play at least 10 contests. The fit has worked out beautifully for both sides as he has also helped McMichael and Wilson take steps forward. Pucks are starting to go in for Dubois as well, meaning his numbers should improve.
- D John Carlson (two, $8 million cap hit, 10-team no-trade clause) — The 35-year-old leads Washington with an average of 23:50 per game. While his offensive production (4-27-31 in 51) has continued to decline this season, Carlson’s defensive game has improved as he leads Washington with a .542 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage and ranks sixth with a .5524 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage.
- D Jakob Chychrun (pending UFA, $4.6 million cap hit) — The 26-year-old has had a career season with 13 goals (fourth among NHL defensemen) and .717 points-per-game (33 in 46: 13th). Chychrun’s average of 20:52 per game trails only Carlson. His .4636 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage is the worst among Capitals who have played in 35 games but he has come up big offensively. Chychrun’s contract may be set to expire but both sides have expressed a desire in extending it.
- D Rasmus Sandin (five, $4.6 million cap hit) — The 24-year-old signed a long-term contract less than 11 months ago and has bounced back nicely this season, where he has notched four goals, 18 points, a +17 rating, .5009 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .5567 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5422 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 51 games, where he has averaged 19:19 per game (fourth), 1:02 coming on the power play and 41 on the penalty kill.
- G Logan Thompson (seven, $766,667 cap hit for rest of this season, $5.8 million for next six) — The 27-year-old, who signed a long-term extension on Monday, ranks third in the NHL in wins (23) and co-leads it with a .927 save percentage in 28 games. His 2.05 goals-against average ranks second. Washington gave Thompson, who has a 8.42 goals-saved above average at five-on-five, a vote of confidence as their starting goaltender of the present and future in extending him earlier this week.
- D Matt Roy (six, $5.75 million cap hit) — While averaging 19:39 per game, including 1:47 on the penalty kill (both third), the 29-year-old has earned two goals, 12 points, a +11 rating, .471 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .49 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5048 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 41 games. Roy is one of Washington’s best shutdown blueliners and just signed a long-term contract.
- LW Ivan Miroshnichenko (two, $950,000 cap hit) — The 20-year-old, who helped the AHL’s Hershey Bears win a Calder Cup Championship last season, has an empty-net goal and four points in 18 NHL games and eight goals and 18 points in 23 AHL contests. Miroshnichenko was picked 20th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft by Washington and has high upside. He could become a regular top-nine forward in the NHL next season.
- D Martin Fehervary (two, $2.675 million cap hit) — The 25-year-old has recorded a goal, 11 points, +9 rating, .5016 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .5063 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5173 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 51 games, where he has averaged 19:10 per game (fifth), including a team-leading 3:06 on the penalty kill. Washington depends heavily on Fehervary defensively and he is in his prime, so the team will keep him.
- LW Ethen Frank (two, $775,000 cap hit) — The 26-year-old undrafted forward has shined in his first 10 NHL games, where he has notched three goals and four points after scoring 20 goals and 28 points in 35 AHL outings to start the season. Frank’s contract is cheap and appeared to have passed Jakub Vrana for a spot on Washington’s third-line. That may change at some point but that does not mean he will be shopped.
Preferably staying, but will listen to offers
- LW Brandon Duhaime (two, $1.85 million cap hit) — The 27-year-old has fit in well on Washington’s fourth-line with six goals, 13 points, and a .4887 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 51 outings.
- Jakub Vrana (pending UFA, $775,000 cap hit) — The 28-year-old may not be a regular in Washington’s lineup but has been productive when getting called on as he has seven goals and 11 points in 25 games. The team has praised his good attitude throughout this season and Vrana has expressed how much he loves Washington and the organization. With scoring depth being a must-have in the postseason and Vrana counting the minimum against the NHL salary cap, the Capitals will likely keep the 2018 Stanley Cup Champion, especially since they were the only team that showed interest in Vrana in unrestricted free agency last summer.
- C Michael Sgarbossa (pending UFA, $775,000 cap hit) — The 32-year-old has seven goals and 29 points in 30 AHL contests and played in just three NHL games this season but has been productive for Washington with seven goals and 15 points in 43 NHL contests since the 2020-21 season. With the Stanley Cup Playoffs approaching, you can never have too many centers.
Would take a great offer
- D Trevor Van Riemsdyk (two, $3 million cap hit) — The 33-year-old has impressed this season with 18 assists, a +19 rating, .4805 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .4871 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5119 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 50 contests, where he has averaged 17:39 per game (sixth), including 1:42 while shorthanded (fourth). Van Riemsdyk’s contract may be a little pricey for the role he plays but he does it well.
- C Nic Dowd (pending UFA, $1.3 million cap hit) — The 34-year-old has been productive with 10 goals, 18 points, a .493 faceoff-winning percentage, and .5122 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 50 games. Dowd, whose 2:33 average penalty killing time on ice per game leads Capitals forwards, could bring a nice return with his defensive prowess and very team-friendly cap hit but will likely stay as he is critical to Washington’s shutdown line.
- G Charlie Lindgren (pending UFA, $1.1 million cap hit) — The 31-year-old has gone 11-9-3 with a .903 save percentage, 2.61 goals-against average, a shutout, and 1.57 goals-saved below average in 24 appearances. Washington showed this week that Thompson is their starting goaltender of both the present and future. While they are reportedly interested in extending Lindgren’s contract, it is not impossible to see him go as he has a bargain of a contract and Washington’s No. 2.
- LW Andrew Mangiapane (pending UFA, $5.8 million cap hit) — The 28-year-old has notched 10 goals, 17 points, and a .5345 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 50 games and has played all over the lineup. With an expensive contract and his contract set to expire, it would not be difficult to see Mangiapane go in an “all-in” deal to get a top-six winger.
- RW Taylor Raddysh (pending UFA, $1 million cap hit) — The 26-year-old has posted four goals, 18 points, and a .5434 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 50 contests in a shutdown role.
- D Dylan McIlrath (pending UFA, $775,000 cap hit) — The 32-year-old has posted two assists, +1 rating, .413 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .4808 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .4956 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 11 NHL games. Washington will likely hang onto Hershey’s captain, who has led the franchise to consecutive Calder Cups, for defensive depth and his snarl might come in handy in the postseason.
Would be open to offers on
- C Lars Eller (pending UFA, $2.45 million cap hit) — The 35-year-old, who was re-acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Washington’s 2027 third-round pick and the Chicago Blackhawks’ 2025 fifth-round pick on November 12, has recorded four goals, 10 points, a .529 faceoff-winning percentage, and .496 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 32 games since getting traded. Eller has averaged 44 seconds on the penalty kill per game (sixth among Capitals forwards). Washington could improve their third-line and Eller’s pending unrestricted free agent status makes it possible he may be moved out.
- C Hendrix Lapierre (pending RFA, $863,334 cap hit) — The 22nd overall pick from the 2020 NHL Draft, who turns 23 on February 9, recorded eight assists and a .4248 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 27 NHL games before getting assigned to the AHL on December 29. Lapierre, who has won two Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears, has tallied five assists in eight AHL games since getting demoted. He could be used as a trade chip to improve Washington’s top-six forward group but it is also reasonable to see how Lapierre fares in training camp next fall.
On the block
- LW Sonny Milano (two, $1.9 million cap hit) — After scoring a career-high 15 goals in 49 games last season, the 28-year-old has been limited to just three games due to a poor training camp and an upper-body injury that has sidelined him since November 6. With Frank and Vrana’s emergences this season, there is not much opportunity for Milano to crack Washington’s top-nine. With that being said, the Capitals would not get fair value back if they traded Milano today.
- D Alexander Alexeyev (pending RFA, $825,000 cap hit) — The 25-year-old, who was taken 31st overall by Washington in 2018, has notched a +4 rating, .4516 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .5967 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5517 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in five games. Alexeyev has not appeared in the AHL since the 2022-23 season and played in just 77 NHL games over four seasons.
IR
- C Nicklas Backstrom (pending UFA, $9.2 million cap hit)
- RW T.J. Oshie (pending UFA, $5.75 million cap hit) — Both players are unlikely to play this season. Backstrom has not suited up since October 29, 2023 due to a lingering hip injury while Oshie last played on April 28, 2024, when Washington got swept by the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Oshie has been recovering from a back injury.

As the 2025 NHL trade deadline approaches, the Washington Capitals find themselves in a unique position. With a mix of established veterans and promising young talent, the team has a number of different trade assets that could be moved to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run.To break down the Capitals’ potential trade assets, here are the team’s trade tiers leading up to the deadline:
Tier 1: Untouchables
At the top of the list are the Capitals’ core players who are essential to the team’s success both now and in the future. This includes stars like Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and John Carlson, who are unlikely to be moved under any circumstances.Tier 2: Valuable Assets
In this tier are players who could be moved in the right deal, but only for a significant return. This group includes players like Tom Wilson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Ilya Samsonov, who have shown their value to the team but could be expendable if the right deal presents itself.Tier 3: Trade Bait
Players in this tier are more likely to be moved before the deadline, either to clear cap space or to bring in additional talent. This group includes players like Lars Eller, Dmitry Orlov, and T.J. Oshie, who could be attractive to other teams looking to add depth for a playoff push.Tier 4: Rental Players
Finally, the Capitals also have a few players on expiring contracts who could be moved as rental players to teams looking for a short-term boost. This group includes players like Anthony Mantha, Justin Schultz, and Conor Sheary, who could be attractive targets for teams looking to add scoring or defensive depth. As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see how the Capitals navigate their trade assets and make moves to strengthen their roster for a potential playoff run. Stay tuned for updates on potential trades and acquisitions as the deadline approaches.

What to Know
We’ve got another exciting Big Ten matchup on schedule as the Washington Huskies and the Minnesota Golden Gophers are set to tip at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Williams Arena. The Huskies are no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.
Last Friday, Washington couldn’t handle UCLA and fell 65-60.
Washington’s loss came about despite a quality game from Great Osobor, who almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds.
Washington struggled to work together and finished the game with only eight assists. That’s the fewest assists they’ve posted since back in January of 2024.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Minnesota’s good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell victim to a painful 73-51 defeat at the hands of Michigan State. The Golden Gophers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-16.
The losing side was boosted by Dawson Garcia, who went 9 for 16 en route to 21 points plus five rebounds. His evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least 22.4 points.
Washington’s loss dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Minnesota, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-10.
Washington is hoping to beat the odds on Saturday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. This contest will be their eighth straight as the underdogs (so far over this stretch they are 3-3-1 against the spread).
Washington couldn’t quite finish off Minnesota in their previous matchup back in November of 2018 and fell 68-66. Can Washington avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

Minnesota Golden Gophers 2024-25 Statistics:
Record: 11-10
Points For per Game: 68.9 ppg (272nd)
Points Against per Game: 68.9 ppg (77th)
Adjusted Offensive Efficiency: 109.4 (125th)
Adjusted Defensive Efficiency: 101.7 (87th)
Strength of Schedule: 39th
Minnesota Key Players:
G- Lu’Cye Patterson, Jr. 6’2, 202: 10.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.6 apg, 35.8% FG, 27.1% 3pt, 73.3% FT
The Minnesota native has played at both Missouri State and Charlotte but was more of a secondary ball handler averaging 14.6 points per game last year. Now in the B1G he’s being asked to play point guard and has been very good at limiting turnovers but is having a terrible shooting season. Although his outside shot has picked up as of late making 37% of his 3-point shots in B1G play.
G- Mike Mitchell, Sr. 6’2, 185: 11.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.0 apg, 37.0% FG, 36.5% 3pt, 73.7% FT
This is Mitchell’s 2nd season with Minnesota after he started his career playing under Lorenzo Romar at Pepperdine. He is known primarily as a long-range sniper and has shot 40% from deep for his career. This year he has cut way down on the turnovers but his shooting percentages are worse than last year across the board.
G- Isaac Asuma, Fr. 6’3, 196: 5.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 43.6% FG, 39.6% 3pt, 55.0% FT
It has been a great start for freshman Isaac Asuma who was a sub-100 recruit but is playing a ton of minutes as the 6th man for Minnesota. He is shooting 43.5% from deep in B1G play. Although it’s usually a bad sign if Minnesota relies too heavily on him because they’re 1-5 in games in which Asuma scores more than 6 points.
F- Femi Odukale, Sr. 6’6, 215: 6.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.4 apg, 42.3% FG, 21.4% 3pt, 46.7% FT
It has been a long and winding road for Odukale who transferred from Pittsburgh to Seton Hall to New Mexico State to Minnesota. He has never been a great shooter but is shooting a career worst from both 3-point range and the free throw line. He leads Minnesota in assist rate playing a bit of a point forward role but also leads the team in turnovers by a wide margin so it’s not a bad thing for UW for him to have the ball. He’s their best wing defender and is 3rd on the team in blocks and 1st in steals.
C- Dawson Garcia, Sr. 6’11, 234: 19.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.1 bpg, 50.2% FG, 37.2% 3pt, 76.2% FT
Garcia is the star for Minnesota and a clear all-conference selection. He had a great freshman year at Marquette then fizzled at North Carolina before transferring home and playing 3 seasons for Minnesota averaging at least 15 points and 6.5 rebounds in each. He’s a true stretch 5 and can do it all. He’s one of just 4 players in the country averaging at least 19 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 made 3 per game along with Rutgers’ Ace Bailey, Stanford’s Maxime Raynaud, and Duke’s Cooper Flagg. Garcia plays enough on the perimeter that he’s a terrible offensive rebounder for a 6’11 center but is a plus everywhere else.
The Outlook
Our long national (okay, extremely regional) nightmare is over. Washington finally gets to play a team that isn’t at the top of the conference standings. After 7 straight games against teams that rank in the top-32 at KenPom, Washington finally gets to play the team that is ranked the next worst in the league at 94th.
That doesn’t mean this one is going to be easy. Minnesota has a record that is close to Washington’s overall but they also have won 3 of their last 4 games. That includes home wins over Michigan and Oregon plus a road victory over Iowa. True, Minnesota got spanked at Michigan State in their most recent game but so did the Huskies in that same spot.
There are a lot of similarities in the roster makeup of these two teams. Both are extremely reliant on their star post player who leads the team in both points and rebounds per game. Both have starting lead guards from Minnesota who have struggled mightily to make outside shots this season (Tyree Ihenacho and Lu’Cye Patterson). Both have been terrible from the free throw line so far with UW at 305th and Minnesota 352nd nationally.
If there’s a positive for Minnesota’s offense other than the play of Garcia, it’s that they are generally a good passing team. The Golden Gophers rank 10th in the country in assist rate so they very rarely rely on isolation basketball. That will be a good test for the Huskies, who despite some shortcomings on the defensive end are 12th in opponent assist rate. Minnesota also ranks well-above average in turnover rate so their extra passes don’t result in a bunch of giveaways.
Teams don’t get a lot of fastbreak opportunities against Minnesota in part because of their ability to protect the ball and in part because of their tempo. They rank nearly last in the country in pace of play so Minnesota will concede some offensive rebounds to get back in transition and will also keep making the extra pass to chew up shot clock. You can’t rely on getting bailed out by Minnesota taking a quick 3 the first time it’s semi-available. They’re content to wait for the best open shot.
In the recent past it would be tempting to say that Dawson Garcia will carve up the Huskies inside. We’ll see if the return of Franck Kepnang means that Garcia will end up spending a lot more time on the perimeter where he is comfortable shooting from outside. If that’s the case, expect the Huskies to switch and play Osobor on Garcia with Kepnang guarding either Odukale or backup bigs Parker Fox and Frank Mitchell, none of whom are threats outside the paint.
When the Huskies have the ball they will need to be careful at the rim. Minnesota is top-30 nationally in block rate and all 4 of the players I just mentioned in the previous paragraph have a block rate over 3.5%. Only Kepnang and reserve KC Ibekwe are over that mark for the Huskies.
It’s tempting to pick Washington in this spot. Minnesota is by far the worst team they’ve played since a blowout win over NJIT in late December. If the Huskies play as well as they did against Maryland, Illinois, or UCLA then it should be enough to come away with a win. All of those games were at home though. We’ve only seen 2 road games outside the Pacific time zone for UW and they were 33 and 16-point losses. To teams much better than Minnesota but a 9 am body clock tipoff time worries me even with a week off between games.
Minnesota has shown they haven’t forgotten how to win a close game. They’re 7th nationally in D-1 experience. Their top-7 players in usage rate are all seniors and only one underclassman is a part of the rotation. It’s a veteran team even if there are only a few returning contributors. Washington’s only prior game against Minnesota was a heart-breaking loss on a contested 3-pointer following a travel with 2.1 seconds left back in 2018. I’ll say it won’t be quite that painful but similarly close until UW proves it can get over the hump.
