Washington Capitals (29-10-5)

Ottawa Senators (22-18-3)

The Caps make the first of two visits to Ottawa this month on Thursday night when they take on the Senators for the first of three meetings this season. Ottawa is the last Eastern Conference team the Caps are facing for the first time in 2024-25.

Washington hits the road on the heels of a 3-0 shutout win over Anaheim on Tuesday in DC. Logan Thompson stopped all 19 shots he faced in that game to earn his first shutout as a Capital and the team’s first shutout since Charlie Lindgren blanked Boston in DC on April 15 of last year, in the team’s penultimate game of the 2023-24 regular season.

Since being recalled from AHL Hershey this past Friday, right wing Ethen Frank has picked up points in each of his first three NHL games (two goals, one assist), and he has given the Caps’ lineup a nice mid-season injection of speed and energy.

In his debut against Montreal on Friday, Frank used his blazing speed to negate a certain icing call on the Caps and quickly making a play to Lars Eller for the tying goal in front, a goal that is ultimately responsible for Washington collecting a point from that contest. A night later in Nashville, Frank’s wheels and shot were on display when he scored his first NHL goal – and the eventual game-winner – to snap a 1-1 tie midway through the third period.

“You could make a strong argument that [Frank’s line] earns us points against Montreal, and then the following night in Nashville,” says Caps coach Spencer Carbery. “The only reason thatn we get three out of four points there is because of that line, and the plays that they make in that game.”

And on Tuesday against the Ducks, Frank scored a big insurance goal in the final minute of what had been a somewhat wobbly second period for the Caps. Playing on a line with Taylor Raddysh and Lars Eller, the 26-year-old native of Papillon, Neb. has made his mark in less than a week in the League.

“Big time,” says Carbery. “And you’ve just seen it on display, so I’m just really excited and almost having to curb myself a little bit [because] it’s only three games. But you start to think about what he can do over a longer stretch with his speed.

“I’ve just been really, really impressed with Ethen Frank, I’ll be honest. He’s just been so impressive in every single way. From reads – and I talked to him today – using his speed, making small, little plays. He is really, really smart with his puck decisions, and strong on the walls.

“He has a play by our bench – and I loved it; I showed it to the group this morning – where he is getting hammered, he is trying to get a puck and he dives for a loose puck and he pokes it to Brandon Duhaime. It’s just a small, little play, but it’s the extra effort, and doing everything he can to make sure the puck advances.

“I can’t say enough good things about what he is doing, and now the challenge becomes doing it consistently, and being an everyday NHLer, you’ve got to try to do it for a week, two weeks, a month, month and a half. Hopefully, I’m optimistic that he is going to be able to do that, and he’ll continue to be in the lineup if he does.”

After playing a little over 10 minutes in each of his first two games, Frank logged 12:20 worth of ice time on Tuesday against Anaheim. His linemates also saw a bump in their minutes in the Anaheim game, which is understandable because the three of them were possession beasts against the Ducks.

“I think Lars has started to play a little bit better,” says Carbery. “I’ve liked his game the last few, so that’s been nice. And Raddy was really good [Tuesday] night. [Andrew Mangiapane], we’ve found that spot on the fourth line for him, and I think that can help his game. He’s had some strong outings, scored in Nashville, and they were one of our better lines there.

“So yeah, I do think Frank being there and Lars playing a little better and Raddy there, I think that combination has been solid, and they’ve earned more opportunity. They’re playing more 5-on-5 minutes, I’m able to deploy them defensively or offensively without any hesitation, and it will probably look like that [Thursday] night [in Ottawa]. You’re not worried about them against [Brady] Tkachuk or [Tim] Stützle or whoever. They can handle those minutes with Rad and Lars playing the way they are, and Frankie as well, playing at the level he’s playing at.”

Tuesday’s win over the Ducks extended Washington’s home point streak to 11 straight games (8-0-3) and pushed its overall points streak to eight (5-0-3). The Caps are second in the NHL in goals per game (3.61), they’re fifth in goals against per game (2.52), third in penalty killing (83.6 percent) and 11th in power play efficiency.

The Caps are catching the Sens in the potential early stages of a heater. Ottawa has won three straight games, winning three games in four nights while traveling for each. The Sens have sandwiched road shutouts over Pittsburgh (5-0 on Saturday) and the Islanders (2-0 on Tuesday) around Sunday’s 3-2 win over Dallas in Ottawa.

Ottawa’s nascent hot spell followed a 1-5-1 stretch, which was preceded by a six game-winning streak that included a pair of shutouts, but also featured a trio of overtime wins. The Sens have been streaky this season, but they’re in the hunt for an Eastern Conference playoff berth. Going into Wednesday night’s typically light slate of NHL activity, Ottawa stood ninth in the Eastern Conference standings, just a single point behind Columbus for the eighth and final Stanley Cup playoff berth from the Conference.

Thursday marks Washington’s first trip to Ottawa in over a year, since suffering a 6-1 setback at the hands of the Sens here on Oct. 18, 2023, in the third game of the 2023-24 regular season and the first road game of Carbery’s tenure as the team’s head coach.

The Washington Capitals are heading to Ottawa to take on the Senators in an exciting matchup. The Caps are looking to continue their winning streak and solidify their spot in the standings. What would a Jonas Valančiūnas trade look like for the Washington Wizards?

WASHINGTON — Jonas Valančiūnas has provided everything the Washington Wizards have asked for since he unexpectedly signed with the team in July.

As the Feb. 6 trade deadline nears, though, the team will have to decide if it wants to keep his size, experience and offensive punch around, or use him to bring in future assets that could help accelerate Washington’s rebuild.

League sources told The Athletic the Wizards will consider dealing the 32-year-old center before the trade deadline if the right deal comes along. But finding a trade that serves the team’s long-term goals will be challenging.

go-deeper

GO DEEPER

Even the Wizards are surprised they’re losing like this

Washington’s front office would want a draft pick (or picks) that would appreciably move the team’s rebuild forward — not, for instance, late second-round picks. But it will be hard to find a suitor, at least before the usual warm-up to trade talks in the final week or so before the deadline, who’d be willing to go much higher.

Any group of teams that would have interest in Valančiūnas almost certainly would be limited to those in win-now mode. Because those suitors would be attempting to add depth rather than subtract quality depth, it would be highly unlikely any trade partner would be willing to give up a top-seven rotation player.

The best way to conceptualize the kind of return the Wizards would want is with a sliding scale.

If, for example, a team would send Washington a highly paid player on a multi-year contract — a contract that would hamper the team’s future payroll flexibility — Washington almost certainly would seek a first-round pick.

The Wizards’ 2023 trade in which they sent Chris Paul to the Golden State Warriors for Jordan Poole, Patrick Baldwin Jr., Ryan Rollins, a 2027 second-round pick and a protected 2030 first-round pick could serve as a guide for any Valančiūnas deal in which the Wizards take back a multi-year contract. That first-round pick incoming via Golden State is protected 1 through 20; if a first-round pick is not conveyed in 2030, the Wizards would receive the Warriors’ second-round pick in 2030.

If any incoming contract in a Valančiūnas’ deal would not impair the Wizards’ long-term payroll flexibility, then more than one early second-round pick might do the trick. One league source, whose team is not currently involved with the Wizards in discussions about Valančiūnas, believes that two second-rounders will wind up being the maximum Washington can get for him.

The Wizards signed Valančiūnas to a three-year, $30.3 million contract in July. The modest investment by modern NBA standards “was worth a shot,” a league source said. And Valančiūnas’s salary for the final season in the deal, 2026-27, is non-guaranteed.

Wizards officials said they signed Valančiūnas to provide a top-notch veteran example to the team’s young players, a group that includes rookies Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George and second-year guard-forward Bilal Coulibaly. Team officials also wanted Valančiūnas to match up against the league’s most physical centers and, in the process, protect Sarr — whose body is still filling out — from bruising matchups. And team officials also wanted Valančiūnas’ scoring and rebounding to help the young nucleus.

go-deeper

GO DEEPER

Wizards’ Alex Sarr had a rough start, but No. 2 pick is showing signs of potential

Valančiūnas has provided all of that. In a career-low 19.9 minutes per game entering Monday, he had averaged 11.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. According to Cleaning the Glass, an advanced analytics database that omits stats compiled in garbage time, Valančiūnas also ranks among the league’s most efficient big men in defensive-rebounding percentage, offensive-rebounding percentage and assist percentage.

In December, Valančiūnas showed his value in a head-to-head matchup with the league’s best player, Nikola Jokić. The Joker was at his absolute best, scoring a career-high 56 points, along with 16 rebounds and eight assists. So, it’s not like Valančiūnas or any of Washington’s other big men slowed him down.

But Valančiūnas held his own, with 20 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and five assists, and the Wizards broke their franchise record-tying 16-game losing streak, in a shocking victory over the 2023 NBA champions.

“I had a couple of really good wrestling moves down there with Jonas,” Jokić said with a chuckle afterward. “I think Jonas’s wrestling, it’s always interesting. I always talk to him normally, and it’s always a little bit physical. I mean, it should be. We’re big boys from Europe. We’re kind of used to being in the contact. I think that’s how it’s supposed to be. Good rivalry.”

Still, many league observers were surprised when the Wizards first signed Valančiūnas, believing that the Wizards signed him to eventually trade for draft assets.

To be sure, Valančiūnas is limited. He doesn’t stretch the floor, obviously (he was 5 of 23 from deep before Washington’s game Monday against Minnesota), and isn’t a guy who finishes above the rim, or protects it at the other end.

But Washington’s depth at the big-man spots behind Sarr would thin if Valančiūnas is traded. Marvin Bagley III sprained the MCL in his right knee on Dec. 23 and is expected to miss an extended stretch of games. The Wizards also have veteran Richaun Holmes available for spot minutes up front.

If Valančiūnas is frustrated that his playing time is a career low, he hasn’t shown it publicly.

When asked by The Athletic whether it’s been difficult to play more sparingly than he’s accustomed to, he answered in trademark self-deprecating fashion,

“It’s good on my body,” he said, laughing. “You always got to see the positives too, you know? It’s good on my body, and I’m not tired. I’m ready to go. Anytime coach calls my number, I’m here to do whatever. I signed up for that.”

Valančiūnas knows trade rumors will swirl over the next several weeks.

How will he deal with that?

“Shut my phone off,” he joked, before he got serious. “Talk with my people, not outside people. People I know. To be honest, it’s a part of the deal. You see what’s out there. You expect everything and you just do your job. That doesn’t change. Whatever happens, it will happen.

“I just come in every day, work. Every game, I play 100 percent. That’s all I can do. That’s all I do. It’s above me. I have no control in that.”

The Washington Wizards have been rumored to be interested in acquiring a center to bolster their frontcourt, and one player that has been linked to them in trade rumors is Jonas Valančiūnas of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Valančiūnas is a traditional big man who excels at rebounding and scoring in the paint, which could be a valuable addition to the Wizards’ roster. However, his contract and age could be potential hurdles in a potential trade.

In order to acquire Valančiūnas, the Wizards would likely have to part ways with a combination of young players, draft picks, and possibly a larger contract to match salaries. Some potential trade packages could include players such as Rui Hachimura, Thomas Bryant, and draft picks in exchange for Valančiūnas.

Overall, a trade for Valančiūnas could provide the Wizards with a much-needed upgrade at the center position, but it would come at a cost. It will be interesting to see if the Wizards are willing to make a move for the veteran big man in order to improve their chances of success in the upcoming season.

From Georgia to Washington, Memorials Trace Jimmy Carter’s Life

In a few days, Jimmy Carter will be celebrated in a towering cathedral in Washington by fellow American presidents, noted humanitarians and other world leaders.

But before all of that, a hearse carrying the remains of Mr. Carter, the nation’s 39th president, paused on Saturday outside a farmhouse in Georgia. There, he raised chickens, helped his father tend to peanut crops and began a seemingly improbable, century-long journey that vaulted him from Plains, Ga., to the heights of political influence and along a globe-trotting mission to eradicate disease and protect democracy.

It was the first stop in a valedictory trek tracing the scope of a lengthy and varied life. The trek, like his life, began and will end in a patch of rural Georgia, where he was born and raised and where he died on Dec. 29 at 100.

In the days ahead, the series of memorial events will incorporate a discussion of the impression that Mr. Carter made on the world, including the legacy he left after a single term in the White House and a post-presidential life that also came to define him.

On Saturday, the journey began with a recognition of the places and people who had been instrumental in shaping him.

He wrote books lovingly recounting an upbringing in which he milked cows, learned to cook possums (the taste: “unique”) and drew water from a well. He also described the fraught racial dynamics of the segregated South and the enduring strains from the Civil War.

“I grew up in one of the families whose people could not forget that we had been conquered, while most of our neighbors were Black people whose grandparents had been liberated in the same conflict,” Mr. Carter wrote in “An Hour Before Daylight,” a memoir of his early life that was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 2002. “Our two races, although inseparable in our daily lives, were kept apart by social custom, misinterpretation of Holy Scriptures and the unchallenged law of the land as mandated by the United States Supreme Court.”

The trip began at about 10 a.m. in Americus, Ga., after his remains were carried to the hearse by current and former special agents in charge of the Secret Service unit that protects Mr. Carter.

In addition to a stop at his boyhood home, now maintained by the National Park Service, the hearse passed through Plains, a town of some 500 people that had been his home base throughout life.

As the hearse and motorcade stopped at the sliver of country road running alongside the farmhouse outside Plains, bells were rung 39 times, a nod to his position in the lineup of American presidents.

It was a crisp morning, and people had come from near and far to perch along the route. Heather Baade, 54, had driven from Austin, Texas, and expressed a sentiment that many others shared: “I love Jimmy Carter.” She admired his ability to balance his deep Christian faith with secular leadership. She also believed that he “tried winning the heart of the whole country,” she said, “which we’re not seeing much of these days.”

Robert Garland, a retired Miami-Dade County sheriff’s deputy, was assigned to Mr. Carter’s security detail in 1991 when the former president visited Miami for his home-building work with Habitat for Humanity. “He was possibly our greatest president,” Mr. Garland, 64, said. “He led with dignity, honor and respect.”

The motorcade is set to meander from Plains through country routes lined by farmland and woods to reach the expansive interstates on the outskirts of Atlanta.

There, city and state leaders, including Gov. Brian Kemp, Georgia’s Republican governor, and Andre Dickens, the Democratic mayor of Atlanta, were scheduled to stand by outside the gold-domed Capitol. Those gathered were to pause for a moment of silence.

A tour through the streets of Atlanta will begin there, with the hearse carrying the former president through a city where he was an enduring presence. He rooted at Braves games. He would pop by Manuel’s Tavern, a bar that was a regular hangout for Georgia Democrats. And he worked countless hours at the Carter Center, the nonprofit he founded with his wife after leaving the White House.

The day’s travels are expected to end there, at the center situated in a tree-covered expanse in the northeastern part of Atlanta. A private service will be held in the afternoon, and he will be in repose beginning on Saturday evening and remain there until early Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, the journey will continue toward Washington, where he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol for a day and a half. A funeral is scheduled for Thursday morning at Washington National Cathedral, where President Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy. President-elect Donald J. Trump has indicated that he will attend.

From there, Mr. Carter will be carried back to Plains. He will be buried on Thursday beside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, just outside the house they built together in 1961.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, is being honored in a series of memorials that trace his life from his humble beginnings in Georgia to his time in the White House and beyond. The memorials, located in various places from his hometown of Plains, Georgia to Washington, D.C., celebrate Carter’s legacy as a humanitarian, peacemaker, and champion of human rights.

In Plains, visitors can tour the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which includes Carter’s childhood home, school, and farm. The site offers a glimpse into Carter’s early years and the values that shaped his presidency.

In Atlanta, the Carter Center serves as a hub for Carter’s post-presidential work in promoting democracy, human rights, and conflict resolution around the world. The center also houses the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, which showcases artifacts and documents from Carter’s time in office.

In Washington, D.C., the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum provides a comprehensive look at Carter’s presidency, including key moments such as the Camp David Accords and the Iran Hostage Crisis. The museum also highlights Carter’s post-presidential efforts, including his work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center.

From Georgia to Washington, these memorials offer a rich tapestry of Carter’s life and legacy, reminding visitors of the impact one man can have on the world. As we reflect on Carter’s contributions to our nation and the world, we are inspired to carry on his commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity.

Romney’s Senate exit marks an end to the bipartisanship Washington desperately needs – Marin Independent Journal

Mitt Romney delivered his farewell speech before the U.S. Senate in early December. It isn’t hyperbole to say it marked the end of an era.

Romney’s time in public service, which has spanned well over two decades, will be considered historic — he is the only American to serve as governor of one state and senator for another, as well as presidential nominee for a major political party. But perhaps more important, Romney’s departure, along with others recently, represents the end of a period in which bipartisanship and dealmaking have been valued, or even aspired to, in Washington.

What we are left with is a Senate — and politics in general — that is too much like the House of Representatives: fundamentally partisan and majoritarian, less interested in cutting deals or passing major legislation, and far more inclined toward showmanship than workmanship.

Consider other departures from the Senate, including Democrats-turned-independents Joe Manchin III and Kyrsten Sinema, who conclude their service this year. And in the GOP, Rob Portman of Ohio, Richard Shelby of Alabama, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Roy Blunt of Missouri, who left the chamber when their terms were up in 2023. The Republicans were firm in their conservative principles but welcomed opportunities to work with legislators from the other side of the aisle. Numerous examples can be found of similar recent departures from the House of Representatives as well.

Romney’s speech, typically gracious, acknowledged that his significant successes were built on partnerships with others, and that his “life’s work has been a group affair.” In the Senate, he has been a linchpin for bipartisan legislation on issues as eclectic as electoral reform, pandemic-era economic relief, marriage rights and infrastructure development. As governor of Massachusetts, he had a record of fiscal conservatism and reform. And as a presidential candidate, he sounded early warnings about the dangers of Vladimir Putin and a resurgent Russia and presaged the increasingly tense relationship between the U.S. and the People’s Republic of China.

But of all his many accomplishments, it’s clear there is none he is prouder of than his effort to bring affordable health insurance to every resident of Massachusetts. Indeed, elements of “Romneycare” made their way into Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, and the Massachusetts law was the first major stroke of bipartisanship in Romney’s career in public service. It attracted the overwhelming support of state legislators from both parties, with the late Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy — whom Romney ran against (and lost to) for U.S. Senate in 1994 — standing beside him when he signed the state health reform legislation into law in April 2006.

The irony is that Romney’s bold health care bipartisan dealmaking may have signaled the beginning of the end of the era in which working together advanced one’s political career. The tea party movement burst onto the political scene in 2009 and foretold a time just a few years later, when Romney’s signature gubernatorial achievement would turn into an albatross in his presidential campaign, as Washington battled over Obamacare. The Affordable Care Act had seeming structural similarities with Romney’s reforms, most notably the inclusion of an individual mandate for health insurance. (The provision was so broadly unpopular that Congress and then-President Donald Trump effectively eliminated the requirement from Obamacare in 2017.)

I served as Romney’s policy director in that 2012 campaign, and we were constantly working to emphasize the benefits of the Massachusetts health care reforms without at the same time appearing to extol the ACA. No matter that Romney’s was a state plan and, as he argued, state policies might not be well-suited for the federal government. Rather than a badge of honor, Romney’s ultimate act of bipartisanship was seen by some Republican primary voters as a scarlet letter.

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced last week that he will not seek re-election to the Senate, marking the end of his tenure as a vocal advocate for bipartisanship in Washington.

Romney, who served as the governor of Massachusetts before running for president in 2012, has been known for his willingness to work across party lines to find solutions to pressing issues facing the country. Throughout his time in the Senate, he has been a strong advocate for compromise and cooperation, even when it meant breaking with his own party.

His decision to step down from the Senate is a blow to those who believe that bipartisan cooperation is essential to addressing the challenges facing the country. In an era of intense partisan polarization, Romney stood out as a voice of reason and moderation, willing to put country above party.

With his departure, the Senate loses a valuable voice for bipartisanship, leaving Washington even more divided and dysfunctional. The need for leaders like Romney to bridge the partisan divide has never been greater, yet it appears that such voices are increasingly rare in today’s political landscape.

As we say goodbye to Mitt Romney in the Senate, we must also reflect on the importance of bipartisanship in our political system. Without leaders who are willing to reach across the aisle and find common ground, Washington will continue to be mired in gridlock and unable to address the pressing issues facing our nation.

It is up to all of us to demand more from our elected officials and to hold them accountable for their actions. Only by working together can we hope to overcome the challenges that lie ahead and build a better future for all Americans.

Ovechkin on track to break Gretzky’s NHL career goals record – NBC4 Washington

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is closing in on the NHL career goals record of 894 held by Wayne Gretzky.

Ovechkin has 871 goals and needs 24 to set a new record.

Ovechkin entered the season 42 short of breaking a record by “The Great One” that long seemed unapproachable. The 39-year-old Russian is in his 20th NHL season and was on pace to get to 895 in February before breaking his left leg in a shin-on-shin collision in November. He missed 16 games but resumed his pursuit at Toronto in the Capitals’ first game out of the Christmas break.

Alex Ovechkin’s last goal scored

Ovechkin scored a power-play goal in the second period Thursday night against Minnesota, his 28th in 47 games against Marc-Andre Fleury. That’s the most of any of the goaltenders Ovechkin has scored on.

What records does Ovechkin already have?

Ovechkin already owns the NHL records for power-play goals and shots on goal.

He also has 132 game-winning goals, four away from breaking Jaromir Jagr’s mark (135). Ovechkin has scored on 178 different goaltenders and counting, tying Jagr. Ovechkin has 177 multi-goal games, second to Gretzky (189).

Ovechkin earlier this season became the 60th player to record 700 career assists. He joined Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Jagr, Marcel Dionne and Phil Esposito as the only players with 700 goals and 700 assists.

Who are the NHL’s leading scorers?

Ovechkin, after climbing past Mike Gartner (708), Esposito (717), Dionne (731), Brett Hull (741) and Jagr (766), scored goal No. 802 on Dec. 23, 2022, to move into second all time behind Gretzky (894).

Who previously held the career goals record?

Gretzky has held the record since scoring his 802nd goal on March 23, 1994, to pass Howe. He added 92 more before retiring in 1999 after a total of 1,487 games over 20 seasons.

Gretzky holds 55 NHL records and even if his goals mark falls to Ovechkin — which he has said he is excited about — two seem truly untouchable: 2,857 total points and 1,963 assists, which is more than anyone else has in goals and assists combined.

In a historic pursuit of greatness, Alexander Ovechkin is on track to break Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record. With each goal he scores, Ovechkin inches closer to etching his name in the record books as the greatest goal scorer of all time.

Ovechkin, who currently plays for the Washington Capitals, has already solidified himself as one of the greatest players in NHL history. His lethal shot, physicality, and unwavering determination have made him a force to be reckoned with on the ice.

Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals has stood for decades as the benchmark for greatness in the NHL. But Ovechkin, with his relentless scoring prowess, is poised to surpass that milestone and etch his name in hockey history.

As Ovechkin continues to light the lamp and rack up goals, fans and analysts alike are eagerly watching to see if he can achieve the seemingly impossible feat of breaking Gretzky’s record. With each goal, Ovechkin moves one step closer to hockey immortality.

Only time will tell if Ovechkin can achieve this remarkable feat, but one thing is certain – he is a player who has the talent, drive, and determination to make history. Stay tuned as Ovechkin continues his quest to break Gretzky’s NHL career goals record.

Men’s Basketball Travels To Washington To Visit GW Saturday

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men’s basketball team travels to Washington, D.C. on Saturday to visit George Washington in Atlantic 10 Conference play.  Game time is 12 noon ET.

This will be UD’s first true road game of the season.  The Flyers played 10 games at UD Arena, and four neutral site games (all against ranked teams).

Dayton is 11-3 overall, and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10.  GW is 11-3 and 0-1 in the A-10.

UD opened conference play with an 84-70 win at home over La Salle.   Malachi Smith’s 20 points led five Flyers in double digits.  Javon Bennett, Amaël L’Etang and Nate Santos each had 12 points, Enoch Cheeks added 10.   Smith had six assists and Cheeks had four steals.

The GW game will be broadcast on WHIO Radio, televised on USA Network and streamed on NBCSports.com.  Streaming audio, video and live stats will be at DaytonFlyers.com.

#TRENDING

• Dayton’s three losses have all come to ranked teams by a total of 14 points.

• Those three losses are the only games where the opponent has shot more FTs than UD.

Nate Santos was named First Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 after being named to the third team after last season.

• Santos’ 6-for-6 shooting performance from deep against Lehigh is tied for the best in the nation.  It is also the second-best ever at UD, behind Shawn Haugh’s 8-for-8 in 1993-94.

Posh Alexander was named Second Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  Alexander is a fifth-year transfer who already has 1,000 career points and 500 career assists (1,423 and 587 respectively).  The fourth recruit from New York City in Anthony Grant‘s tenure at UD, he led the Big East in steals in each of the last four seasons (three at St. John’s and one at Butler).

Enoch Cheeks was also named A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He led the team in steals (40), was second in blocked shots (21), and was third in rebounding (4.7) in his first season at UD after transferring from Robert Morris.  The Providence, R.I. native was the 2023-24 winner of UD’s Steve McElvene Award.  Cheeks was consistently assigned the opponents’ top perimeter player on defense.  In the 25 games (out of 33) where the Flyer foe’s top player was a guard or wing, that player was held under his average 17 times. He started in all 33 games and averaged 8.1 points per game (9.5 in A-10 play).

• The Dayton roster includes five players who have earned all-conference recognition in their past – junior forward Nate Santos (Atlantic 10), junior Enoch Cheeks (Horizon League). junior Javon Bennett (Northeast Conference), redshirt junior Malachi Smith (Atlantic 10) and fifth-year senior Posh Alexander (Big East).

• Amaël L’Etang was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25.  He scored 11 points (4-6 FG) in 13 minutes against New Mexico State.

• Cheeks was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Dec. 2 after averaging 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds against North Carolina, Iowa State and UConn in Maui.

• Cheeks is eighth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.2).

• Smith is second in the A-10 in assists (5.9) and fourth in 3-pt. FG% (.467, 16-34).

Posh Alexander is second in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4).

Zed Key is sixth in FG% (.641. 50-78).  He is also fifth in D-I (30) for most dunks .

• As a team, Dayton leads the Atlantic 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.76) and FG% (.487, 379-778) and is fourth in 3-pt. FG% (.352, 111-315).  UD is 13th nationally in A/T ratio.

• UD ranked 20th in average attendance in NCAA Division I last season, averaging a capacity crowd of 13,407 fans a game in 2023-24.  Of schools in the top 25 in attendance, only Kansas, Purdue, Michigan State and UConn also sold out every game of the season.

• Dayton has already announced it has sold out every game for the upcoming 2024-25 season, including both exhibition games that have already been played.  This will be the fourth consecutive year UD has sold out every home game.  That streak is now 68 games.

• This is also the 55th anniversary season of UD Arena.  The Arena underwent a $76.2 million transformation project that was completed in time for the 2019-20 season.

• Dayton’s 26-game homecourt win streak is the fourth-longest in Division I, behind Houston (29), Drake and UConn (27).  Data through 1/1.

• The Flyers are wearing “DJD” on their left shoulder strap in memory of Don Donoher.  Coach Donoher died last April at the age of 92.  He was the first man to coach his alma mater in the NCAA tournament after appearing in it as a player.  A member of the NABC College Basketball Hall of Fame, he is Dayton’s all-time winningest coach (437 wins).  He was the 2017 winner of the USBWA’s Dean Smith Award.

UP NEXT

• The Flyers are at UMass on Wednesday, Jan. 8.  Game time is 7 p.m. ET.

• After a bye weekend, UD’s next home game is on Wednesday, Jan. 15 vs. George Mason.

What to know about Saturday’s game against George Washington

Protecting the home court and limiting losses on the road in conference play is the key to topping the standings in the A-10. The Dayton Flyers accomplished one of those goals last season, finishing 9-0 at UD Arena in conference games, but lost four times in nine tries on the road.

Dayton’s first A-10 road test of the 2024-25 season comes at noon Saturday against George Washington (11-3) at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C. in the second A-10 game of the season. It will be the first true road game of the season for Dayton (11-3). The Flyers have played 10 home games and four games on neutral courts.

“It’s conference play, so we understand every game we have to expect to get our opponents’ best,” Dayton coach Anthony Grant said Tuesday after a 74-60 victory against La Salle, “so we have to be prepared to bring our best. We understand that it’s a different environment, and so the energy will be different for us. It comes down to having a mature team, a team that has good leadership and a team that understands we’ve got to do the hard stuff all the way through, whether it’s at home or on the road.”

Here are 10 things to know about the matchup:

1. Series history: Dayton leads the series 23-18. UD won 83-61 last season at UD Arena.

Two years ago in Dayton’s last visit to George Washington, it lost 76-69. No one from George Washington who played in that game remains with the team. Malachi Smith is the only Dayton player remaining from that game.

Prior to the 2023 game, Dayton had won six straight games in the series and three straight at the Smith Center since an 87-81 loss in the final game of the 2017 regular season.

2. Tough place to play: Dayton is 6-14 at the Smith Center since 1996. George Washington is 8-0 at home this season. It has won 18 straight non-conference home games. Last season, though, the Revolutionaries were 3-6 at home in A-10 games.

George Washington ranks 13th out of 15 teams in the A-10 in average attendance (1,599). Two years ago, it drew a crowd of 2,380 for Dayton.

“These games are kind of tough just because we have to pick up our energy and our intensity,” Smith said. “It’s probably not going to be a big crowd, like we’re used to playing in front of, but this is what we’ve got to do to get the A-10 championship.”

3. State of the program: George Washington, which was picked to finish 13th in the A-10 preseason poll, is trying to end a streak of seven straight non-winning seasons in coach Chris Caputo’s third season. It finished 16-16 two years ago and 15-17 last season. The program last reached the NCAA tournament in 2014.

4. Disappointing start: In its A-10 opener Tuesday, George Washington trailed Richmond 32-21 in the first minute of the second half. It then outscored Richmond 31-7 in a 10-minute stretch to build a 52-39 lead.

Richmond (6-8) responded with its own comeback and outscored George Washington 9-0 in the last 90 seconds to win 66-61 in Richmond.

5. Schedule strength: George Washington’s non-conference strength of schedule ranked last in the country out of 364 teams, according to KenPom.com. It beat two teams ranked in the top 200 of the NCAA Evaluation Tool: No. 130 Illinois State; and No. 182 Hampton. It lost 83-71 to No. 108 Kansas State, the top-ranked opponent on its non-conference schedule. Its worst loss was to No. 255 American.

6. Transfer portal loss: Maximus Edwards, a 6-foot-5 guard, transferred to Duquesne after averaging 11.5 points in two seasons at George Washington. He’s averaging 6.1 points this season.

7. Top returner: Darren Buchanan, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, leads the team in scoring (15.1) after ranking second last season (15.6). He scored 13 points against Dayton last season.

8. Top transfers: Gerald Drumgoole, a 6-5 sixth-year guard, ranks second on the team in scoring (13.8). He played last season at Delaware. Earlier in his career, he spent two seasons at Pittsburgh and then two at Albany. He made 7 of 13 3-pointers against Richmond and scored 27 points.

• Rafael Castro, a 6-10 junior forward, ranks third in scoring (10.1) and first in rebounding (9.0). He played limited minutes the last two seasons at Providence. Castro had Dayton in his final three but committed to Providence in September 2020.

9. Strengths and weaknesses: George Washington ranks second in the A-10 in scoring (78.5 points per game). Dayton is fifth (77.6).

George Washington ranks 11th in the A-10 in 3-point shooting percentage (32.5). It made 10 of 32 3s (31.2%) against Richmond. Dayton ranks fourth in the A-10 (35.2) but has shot under 30% in four straight games.

10. Odds & Ends: KenPom.com gives Dayton a 78% chance of winning and predicts a 78-69 score. Dayton ranks 30th in the Pomeroy ratings. George Washington is No. 138.

• Dayton ranks 44th in the NET. It is the highest-ranked A-10 team. No. 150 George Washington is the 10th highest-ranked A-10 team.

This is a Quad 3 game for Dayton and a Quad 2 game for George Washington.

Dayton is 2-3 in Quad 1 games, 1-0 in Quad 2, 2-0 in Quad 3 and 5-0 in Quad 4. George Washington is 0-0 in Quad 1, 0-0 in Quad 2, 1-1 in Quad 3 and 9-2 in Quad 4

Hillary Clinton, George Soros and Denzel Washington will receive the highest US civilian honor

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Democratic philanthropist George Soros and actor-director Denzel Washington will be awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor on Saturday in a White House ceremony.

President Joe Biden will bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 of the most famous names in politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy and science.

The White House said the recipients have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”

Four medals are to be awarded posthumously. They are going to Fannie Lou Hamer, who founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and laid the groundwork for the 1965 Voting Rights Act; former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy; George W. Romney, who served as both a Michigan governor and secretary of housing and urban development; and Ash Carter, the former secretary of defense.

Kennedy is father to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for health and human services secretary. Romney is the father of former Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, one of Trump’s strongest conservative critics.

Major philanthropists receiving the award include Spanish American chef José Andrés, whose World Central Kitchen charity has become one of the world’s most recognized food relief organizations, and Bono, the frontman for rock band U2 and a social justice activist.

Sports and entertainment stars being recognized include professional soccer player Lionel Messi; retired Los Angeles Lakers basketball legend and businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson; actor Michael J. Fox, who is an outspoken advocate for Parkinson’s disease research and development; and William Sanford Nye, known to generations of students as “Bill Nye the Science Guy.”

Other awardees include conservationist Jane Goodall; longtime Vogue Magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour; American fashion designer Ralph Lauren; American Film Institute founder George Stevens Jr.; entrepreneur and LGBTQ+ activist Tim Gill; and David Rubenstein, co-founder of The Carlyle Group global investment firm.

Last year, Biden bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on 19 people, including the late Medgar Evers, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina and actor Michelle Yeoh.

In a historic move, Hillary Clinton, George Soros, and Denzel Washington are set to receive the highest US civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to society and have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their respective fields.

Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State and first woman to be nominated for President by a major political party, is being honored for her years of public service and tireless advocacy for women’s rights and equality.

George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist and founder of the Open Society Foundations, is being recognized for his commitment to promoting democracy, human rights, and social justice around the world.

Denzel Washington, the award-winning actor and director, is being celebrated for his iconic performances and powerful portrayals of complex characters that have inspired audiences for decades.

These three individuals have each made a lasting impact on society in their own unique ways, and their contributions will be celebrated and honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Join us in congratulating Hillary Clinton, George Soros, and Denzel Washington on this well-deserved recognition.
