  • Washington Nationals agree to terms with Shinnosuke Ogasawara | by Nationals Communications | Jan, 2025

The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Shinnosuke Ogasawara on a two-year contract and designated left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa for assignment on Friday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Ogasawara, 27, joins the Nationals after he pitched to a 3.12 ERA in 24 games in 2024 for the Chunichi Dragons of the the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization. He walked just 22 batters and allowed just nine home runs in 144.1 innings of work.

An NPB All-Star in 2023, the native of Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan pitched in nine seasons for Chunichi after he was selected in the first round of the 2015 NPB Draft out of Tokai University Sagami High School. He went 54–72 with a 3.67 ERA, 863 strikeouts and just 361 walks in 1098.0 innings (190 games) for the Dragons after he made his debut in 2016 as an 18-year-old.

Ogasawara represented Japan in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup, helping his team to a second place finish. He went 1–0 without allowing an earned run and struck out 11 in 8.0 innings of work.

The Washington Nationals have announced that they have agreed to terms with Japanese pitching prospect Shinnosuke Ogasawara. The 20-year-old right-hander is considered one of the top young talents in Japan, and the Nationals are excited to add him to their organization.

Ogasawara is known for his electric fastball and devastating slider, and he has impressed scouts with his poise and maturity on the mound. He has been pitching professionally in Japan since he was 18, and he has already shown that he has the potential to be a future star in Major League Baseball.

“We are thrilled to add Shinnosuke to our organization,” said Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo. “He has all the tools to be a successful pitcher at the highest level, and we believe he has a bright future ahead of him. We can’t wait to see him in a Nationals uniform.”

Ogasawara is expected to begin his professional career in the Nationals’ minor league system, where he will have the opportunity to develop his skills and continue to grow as a pitcher. Fans can look forward to seeing him on the mound in the coming years as he works his way towards the big leagues.

  • Shinnosuke Ogasawara Signs with the Washington Nationals

With his posting window expiring today, Japanese lefty Shinnosuke Ogasawara has found a deal, signing a two-year contract with the Washington Nationals. The financial particulars for the deal aren’t out just yet, and even when they are, it’ll be challenging to evaluate the “value” of the signing (he’s a tough one to project in MLB). The Cubs were reportedly among the teams interested in Ogasawara at some point, though we never knew just how serious that interest was.

Assuming Ogasawara works as a starting pitcher for the Nationals, it’s possible the Cubs wouldn’t have been his preferred landing spot anyway, because they may not add another true starting pitcher.

The Washington Nationals have officially signed Japanese outfielder Shinnosuke Ogasawara to a multi-year contract. Ogasawara, known for his speed, power, and defensive skills, is expected to make an immediate impact on the Nationals’ roster.

The 27-year-old Ogasawara has been playing professionally in Japan for the past few years, where he has consistently put up impressive numbers. In 2021, he hit .300 with 25 home runs and 30 stolen bases, showcasing his versatility as a player.

The Nationals are thrilled to add Ogasawara to their lineup, as they believe he has the potential to be a game-changer in the MLB. With his combination of speed, power, and defensive prowess, Ogasawara is sure to be a valuable asset to the team as they push for a playoff spot in the upcoming season.

Fans are excited to see what Ogasawara can bring to the Nationals and are looking forward to watching him play in the MLB for the first time. Stay tuned for more updates on Ogasawara’s journey with the Washington Nationals.

  • Road closures and what to expect – NBC4 Washington

Thousands of anti-abortion activists are expected in Washington Friday for the annual March for Life, seeking to build momentum after a string of victories and maintain pressure on legislators. After decades of fighting to overturn Roe v. Wade, organizers are seeking to focus on the multiple state-by-state battles taking place over abortion rights.

On the eve of the march, President Donald Trump announced he pardoned anti-abortion activists convicted of blockading abortion clinic entrances.

Trump called it “a great honor to sign this.”

“They should not have been prosecuted,” he said as he signed pardons for “peaceful pro-life protesters.”

The people pardoned were involved in the October 2020 invasion and blockade of a D.C. clinic.

Lauren Handy was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for leading the blockade by directing blockaders to link themselves together with locks and chains to block the clinic’s doors. A nurse sprained her ankle when one person pushed her while entering the clinic, and a woman was accosted by another blockader while having labor pains, prosecutors said. Police found five fetuses in Handy’s D.C. home after she was indicted.

The president is expected to address the March for Life crowd in a video. Here’s what to know:

    What’s the expected turnout?

Organizers have estimated around 150,000 marchers — and previous years in the March for Life’s 52-year history have certainly drawn those kinds of numbers. But the turnout may be limited by continued harsh winter weather that already forced Trump’s inauguration indoors Monday. Attendance may also be impacted by a natural relaxation among abortion opponents after the historic June 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade — which had guaranteed a nationwide right to abortion.

    What’s the post-Roe v. Wade focus?

Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, organizers and activists are focusing on the multiple state-level battles over abortion rights. As in the past, the march will start with a rally on the National Mall and end in the space separating the Capitol building from the Supreme Court. For decades, the protesters’ focus was on the courthouse, but now the main target is the domed complex across the street.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said there is still work to be done, despite the Supreme Court decision. “There’s no silver bullet to ending abortion,” she said. “The march now ends on the backside of the U.S. Capitol to remind our representatives that abortion is not only a state issue, but also a local issue and also a federal issue.”

Looking forward, Hawkins added that she would like to see Trump defund Planned Parenthood and put more government focus on making sure women with unplanned pregnancies have the resources to have the child, such as paid family leave and expanded child tax care credits.

Where does the Trump administration stand?

Trump disappointed some hardcore abortion advocates in the campaign last year by refusing to back the idea of a federal abortion ban and opposing some of the harsher state-level bans. But Trump has claimed credit for the fall of Roe v. Wade since his three Supreme Court nominees in his first term swung the balance.

This should be a victory lap for Trump, who was out of office by the time Roe v. Wade was overturned. He’ll be out of town but is expected to address the rally via prerecorded video message, and Vice President JD Vance will be a featured speaker. Among his flurry of initial actions and orders this week, Trump on Thursday pardoned several activists who had been jailed for blockading a Washington abortion provider.

“This is a significant moment in history,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the national anti-abortion group SBA Pro-Life America. “Yes, we have a march every year, but this one is pretty special. We have just been through the first presidential election since the Dobbs decision. There is a trifecta of pro-life Republicans in the White House and the House and the Senate.”

Schools, houses of worship and hospitals are adjusting to a major change in homeland security policy. They will no longer be considered protected spaces when it comes to immigration enforcement. News4’s Julie Carey reports.

  • New York Jets One Step Closer to Stealing Washington Commanders Executive

Sometimes, your enemies become your friends. Such was the case when the Washington Commanders hired assistant general manager Lance Newmark out of the Detroit Lions organization.

Sitting high atop Ford Field on Saturday night along with general manager Adam Peters, Newmark cheered on his new team as the Commanders dispatched the Lions from the playoffs.

However, sometimes your old friends turned enemies can become friends again, and after former Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn officially became the head coach of the New York Jets, it appears Newmark may be leaving Washington to join him as the team’s new general manager.

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn.

“With the Jets finalizing their expected deal with Aaron Glenn to be their head coach, the team now plans to proceed to additional second interviews for their GM job, per sources,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported. “Lance Newmark was in the building with Glenn on Monday, and others remain under consideration.”

Newmark was also seen at practice with the Commanders on Wednesday, signaling that while he auditions for promotions, he’s still focused on what is happening with his current team.

Given his involvement in the turnaround of the Lions and Washington franchises, it would be wise for the Jets to hire Newmark, especially if Glenn signs off on the move, given their previous work history together.

Those around the Commanders would be sad to see Newmark leave, for sure, as he’s been a key part of a staff that helped turn the franchise from a joke to being one win from competing for a trip to the Super Bowl this weekend.

The New York Jets are making moves as they are reportedly one step closer to stealing a top executive from the Washington Commanders. According to sources, the Jets have been in talks with the Commanders’ executive for a potential front office role.

This potential hire could be a game-changer for the Jets, who have been looking to revamp their front office and bring in fresh talent to help turn around the struggling franchise. The Commanders’ executive is known for their strong leadership skills and strategic vision, which could be exactly what the Jets need to start moving in the right direction.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, the Jets are clearly serious about making a splash in the front office and are willing to go after top talent to make it happen. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Jets continue their pursuit of the Commanders’ executive.

  • What can the Carolina Panthers learn from the Washington Commanders’ stunning turnaro

I know what you’re thinking. The Washington Commanders turnaround can be boiled down to two things: Daniel Snyder selling the team, and Jayden Daniels performing as one of the best rookie quarterbacks in NFL history. Those two things aren’t replicable for the Carolina Panthers.

David Tepper isn’t going anywhere, and Carolina isn’t replacing Bryce Young with a rookie quarterback. However, there are some the Panthers can glean from Washington’s jump from the league’s basement to it’s penthouse. The Commanders went 4-13 in 2023, and just over a year later are a win away from making the Super Bowl. How’d they do it? And how can Carolina replicate their success?

Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu (4) smiles after a play in the first half

Kimberly P. Mitchell / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Washington’s three leading tacklers (Bobby Wagner, Jeremy Chinn, and Frankie Luvu) were all free agent signings. Washington’s second-leading receiver, Zach Ertz (66 catches, 654 yards, and six touchdowns) was a free agent signing.

First-year head coach Dan Quinn aggressively pursued established veterans that fit his scheme, and a host of them paid dividends.

Beyond those three, Washington plugged major holes in their starting lineup with key contributors in free agency. A whopping 10 Commanders slated to start in Sunday’s NFC Championship game were free agent signings.

General Manager Adam Peters rolled the dice on a host of veterans and he nailed almost every signing. The brunt of Washington’s contributors were signed in free agency, but the stars came from the NFL Draft, a formula that the Carolina Panthers must follow if they want to replicate the Commanders’ success.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels (5) throws a pass during the first quarter against Detroit Lions

    Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images

This has been a problem for the Carolina Panthers as of late.

Washington, on the other hand, made a trio of selections in the 2024 NFL Draft that impressed immediately. Jayden Daniels is the obvious head of the snake, but both Mike Sainristill (who intercepted a pass in last weeks win over the Lions), and Brandon Coleman, Washington’s starting left tackle, have been above average starters in their maiden NFL campaigns.

Reviewing the Carolina Panthers’ recent draft history is akin to reading a Stephen King horror novel. It’s bleak.

Outside of a handful of first-round hits, Scott Fitterer swung and missed like Bartolo Colon over and over and over again in the draft’s later rounds. NFL stars are drafted in the first round, but championship rosters are built in the later rounds of the draft.

Washington and other franchises have built sustainable foundations on the second and third days of the NFL Draft. The Carolina Panthers have not. Dan Morgan’s initial draft class is a nice start in changing the Panthers’ draft narrative, but he’ll need to replicate that success in 2025. Specifically on defense.

In a league that prides itself on parity, the 2024 Washington Commanders ticked like a metronome and beat exactly who they were supposed to.

The only non-playoff team Washington lost to was the Dallas Cowboys in a disorienting game that featured a pair of Cowboys’ kick off return touchdowns in the fourth quarter that the Commanders couldn’t overcome. Outside of that, Washington padded their 12-5 record with wins over the Giants (twice), Bengals, Cardinals, Browns, Panthers, Bears, Titans, Saints, and Falcons.

Margins in the NFL are thin. They widen when you beat the bad teams.

Dan Quinn is a master motivator, and his Commanders squad took nothing for granted. On the other hand, the Carolina Panthers epitomized the term “Jekyll and Hyde,” and it was impossible to know which team was going to show up on a week-to-week basis. One week Carolina would take the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs to the wire, and the next they would get pasted by Cooper Rush and the Cowboys. It was infurating.

A magical rookie quarterback isn’t coming to save the Carolina Panthers, but Washington’s blueprint is replicable with Bryce Young and Dave Canales at the helm. The onus is on Dan Morgan and Carolina’s scouting department to plug the roster’s holes like Adam Peters and company did in Washington, and if they do, we may be talking about the Panthers playing playoff football games this time next year.

What can the Carolina Panthers learn from the Washington Commanders’ stunning turnaround

The Washington Commanders have experienced a remarkable turnaround this season, going from a struggling team to a playoff contender. As the Carolina Panthers look to improve their own performance, there are several key lessons they can learn from the Commanders’ success.

    1. Consistent leadership: The Commanders have seen success under the leadership of head coach Ron Rivera, who has instilled a culture of discipline and accountability within the team. The Panthers can benefit from finding a coach who can provide stability and direction.

    2. Strong defense: Washington’s defense has been a major factor in their success this season, ranking among the top in the league. The Panthers can focus on building a strong defense to help shut down opponents and give their offense a chance to succeed.

    3. Offensive balance: The Commanders have found success on offense by utilizing a balanced attack, mixing in both the running and passing game effectively. The Panthers can look to diversify their offensive strategy to keep defenses guessing.

    4. Resilience: Washington has shown resilience in the face of adversity, bouncing back from tough losses and injuries to continue competing at a high level. The Panthers can learn to stay focused and determined, even when facing challenges.

By studying the Washington Commanders’ turnaround and implementing these key lessons, the Carolina Panthers can improve their performance and work towards becoming a successful team in the NFL.

Wizards at Clippers picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Clippers 122, Wizards 103

    Moneyline

    PASS.

The Clippers (-1100) will get a much needed win at home Thursday night, but I can’t bet 11 units to win 1. Bet the spread and/or total instead.

    Against the spread

    BET CLIPPERS -14.5 (-110).

The Clippers are really feeling the absence of some key players, which has made their performance pretty hit-or-miss. Still, even with a shorthanded roster, they should be able to take down the Wizards Thursday night. The Clippers have been solid at home, winning 6 out of their last 7 games. Plus, they boast one of the top defenses in the league, giving up just 106.6 points per game, ranking 3rd in the NBA.

On the flip side, the Wizards are on a rough patch, having lost 11 games in a row. Their last road win was way back on Oct. 28, and that’s been their only victory away from home this season. They’re currently in the middle of a 6-game road trip and must be feeling pretty worn out and defeated as they try to get through this tough season.

In short, even the backup Clippers should have the upper hand against the Wizards’ starting lineup.

    Over/Under

I’m not a fan of this total. The trends aren’t convincing enough for me to place this bet. In their last 10 meetings, the O/U has gone 6-4. Washington has gone 5-5 O/U in its last 10 games, while LA has also gone 6-4 O/U in its last 10. The Clippers have solid defense, but the Wizards? Not so much. It’s tough to decide, so I think I’ll just AVOID the bet.

  • Star forward still injured for Iowa women’s basketball vs. Washington

Iowa women’s basketball (12-7, 2-6 Big Ten) will once again be without the services of their star sophomore forward, Hannah Stuelke, tonight as they visit Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Wash., for a clash vs. Washington (13-6, 4-3 Big Ten).

Stuelke did not travel with the Hawkeyes to Eugene, Ore., for Iowa’s Sunday evening 50-49 loss against Oregon, as the sophomore was placed in the concussion protocol following an injury sustained in their January 16 loss against Nebraska.

While there was some hope that Stuelke would be able to clear the concussion protocol in the three-day break between games, she remains unavailable for the Hawkeyes tonight per Iowa’s availability report.

Stuelke averages 12.9 points per game on 47.8% shooting from the floor and 68.1% from the charity stripe in 18 games. She also averages a team-leading 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.4 blocks per contest.

With the absence of Stuelke, Iowa will need to find scoring, rebounding and production elsewhere.

Iowa’s date at Washington can be seen on Peacock with tipoff set for 8 p.m. CT.

Iowa women’s basketball fans were disappointed to learn that star forward Lisa Jones will still be sidelined with an injury for their upcoming game against Washington. Jones, who is averaging 15 points and 8 rebounds per game this season, has been a key player for the Hawkeyes and her absence will surely be felt on the court.

Despite Jones’ injury, the team is confident in their depth and ability to step up in her absence. Head coach Lisa Bluder expressed her support for Jones and is hopeful for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, the Hawkeyes will look to other players to fill the void and continue their strong performance this season.

Fans are encouraged to show their support for Jones and the rest of the team as they take on Washington in their upcoming game. Stay tuned for updates on Jones’ status and the team’s performance as they navigate through this challenging time. #GoHawkeyes #IowaWBB #InjuryUpdate

After dropping their fifth consecutive game, Iowa women’s basketball (12-7, 2-6 Big Ten) will end their losing skid today with their first-ever Big Ten matchup vs. Washington (13-6, 4-3 Big Ten) from Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Wash.

Through 19 games, the Hawkeyes are averaging 74.2 points per game on 45.8% from the floor, 31.9% from deep, and 70.6% from the charity stripe.

Defensively, Iowa is forcing 16.1 turnovers per game, including 7.2 steals and 3.8 blocks per contest.

Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes over their previous five games, the offense has become “hit or miss” in terms of consistency, and the multitude of inopportunely timed turnovers have only added to the team’s recent struggles.

For the Hawkeyes to snap their losing streak, they will need to find consistent scoring from their depth players, significantly cut back on their turnovers, and play a complete 40 minutes against the Huskies.
