  • Did Republicans Take Washington in a Landslide? Not So Much


    Soon after his victory in November, President-elect Donald J. Trump claimed a “powerful mandate” for his legislative agenda. Indeed, he swept all of the key battleground states and was the first Republican to win the popular vote in two decades.

    However, Mr. Trump won the popular vote by only 1.5 percentage points, the smallest margin since 2000. It was the fourth narrowest gap since 1900.

    In this competitive era of elections, landslide victories — in which one candidate receives overwhelming support — rarely happen on the national level. Since 1988, the popular vote margin of every presidential election has been within 10 percentage points, a reflection of the country’s stark political divide.

    For much of U.S. history, particularly strong candidates could sway large numbers of voters to abandon their home party in presidential elections.

    Now, amid deepening political polarization, both parties increasingly use data to target voters and improve turnout. As a result, presidential landslide elections have become much less common, according to David Darmofal, a professor of political science at the University of South Carolina.

    “We would expect that in that better-informed environment, the two parties should be roughly in equilibrium and getting close to each other’s percentage of the votes,” he said.

    Big shift, slim margin

    Last year was notable because it was the first time that Republicans won the popular vote since 2004. The country swung about six points rightward toward Republicans, one of the more substantial shifts in the last two decades.

    While Mr. Trump’s gains were just enough for Republicans to win the popular vote, the victory does not stand out compared with much larger shifts in previous elections, like the 25-point turn toward Democrats in Jimmy Carter’s 1976 victory or the 23-point flip toward Republicans in Richard Nixon’s 1968 win.

    Throughout the 20th century, it was common for the popular vote margin to swing more than 20 points in a given election cycle. In the last several decades, shifts have dwindled to fewer than 10 percentage points.

    “The continuity in voting patterns today is what separates our era of elections relative to the past,” said Carlos Algara, an assistant professor of political science at the Claremont Graduate University. “A lot of these counties are just off the table for Republicans or off the table for Democrats, and Trump has really accelerated this trend.”

    A waning edge in the House

    In November, Republicans held on to the House and regained the Senate, handing Mr. Trump a government trifecta.

    The 119th session’s House of Representatives began with a margin of only four seats separating Republicans and Democrats, the narrowest start since the 1930s.

    Seeing 100-seat margins in the House and 20-seat differences in the Senate was not uncommon in the 20th century. Today, they are much tighter in both the House and Senate.

    The Republicans’ majority this session is expected to be even closer with Representatives Elise Stefanik of New York and Mike Waltz of Florida possibly joining Mr. Trump’s administration.

    Slim margins in the Senate

    In the Senate, seat margins have decreased over the last several decades, and the result in 2024 is no exception.

    Republicans flipped four seats in the most recent election in the Senate, winning races in three red states (Ohio, Montana and West Virginia) and eking out a victory in Pennsylvania for a six-seat advantage.

    The narrow margin does not necessarily mean it will be easier for Democrats to take back the Senate. They would have to flip four seats in the 2026 midterms.



    The recent election results may have left many Republicans feeling victorious, but did they really take Washington in a landslide? Not so much.

    While Republicans did make gains in the House and Senate, the margins were not as wide as some had predicted. In the House, Democrats still hold a majority, albeit a smaller one. And in the Senate, the balance of power remains the same, with Democrats still in control.

    It’s important to remember that elections are not just about winning seats, but also about representing the diverse views and needs of the American people. While Republicans may have made gains, there is still a significant portion of the population that does not align with their policies and beliefs.

    So, while Republicans may have reason to celebrate, it’s clear that the political landscape in Washington is far from being completely taken over by one party. It will be important for both parties to work together to find common ground and address the pressing issues facing our country.

    A president’s inauguration is a historic day, where scores of Americans travel across the country to see their new president be sworn in and give their first speech as Commander-in-chief.

    However, the weather conditions on Inauguration Day are not necessarily ideal. Washington, D.C. in January is often cold, and sometimes brings along precipitation.

    Temperatures have been as low as the single digits. And some even think a windy and rainy day in 1841 led to President William Henry Harrison catching a cold that ended up killing him one month later.

    For this year’s inauguration, officials have announced it will be moved inside the United States Capitol Rotunda due to the cold. Temperatures for D.C. are currently predicted to be at a high of 26 degrees and a low of 16 degrees, with sunshine, clouds and winds from 10 to 20 mph.

    It is not the first time this has happened. In fact, our country’s first inaugurations were always held indoors.

    Let’s take a closer look at how weather has impacted presidential inaugurations throughout our history:

    Has Inauguration Day always been in January?

    No, the president’s inauguration was held on March 4 from President George Washington’s ceremony in 1789 until 1937, when the country passed the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution to move the end of the presidential transition to January to reduce the amount of “lame duck” time for a sitting president.

    What was the coldest Inauguration Day?

    The coldest inauguration on record was President Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985, which was 7 degrees Fahrenheit at noon for the swearing-in, with a low of 4 below zero for the day, according to weather.gov.

    Reagan’s ceremony was not only held in the United States Capitol Rotunda, but the traditional parade was canceled as well.

    The coldest inauguration to be held outside was President Ulysses S. Grant’s in 1873, which was held on the old Inauguration Day of March 4. The temperature at noon was 16 degrees, and a day low was 4 degrees and a wind chill of 15 degrees below zero.

    Has it snowed on Inauguration Day?

    It has snowed several times during a presidential inauguration, including some flurries coming down during President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

    The largest snowfall on an Inauguration Day was during President William Howard Taft’s inauguration in 1909, when 9.8 inches of snow fell on D.C.

    Has it rained on Inauguration Day?

    Several inaugurations have left a newly minted president drenched. President Herbert Hoover’s inauguration was met with a downpour of rain, a possible bad omen of things to come.

    “A heavy rain began just before the oath of office was administered, and the Capitol grounds and parade route were so crowded that it was impossible for anyone to run for cover,” weather.gov described the scene at Hoover’s inaugural. “By the time he completed his inaugural address, President Hoover’s face was beaded with water and his suit was wringing wet.”

    Heavy rain was also present for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s second inauguration in 1937, with 0.69 inches of rain falling between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

    How many inaugurations have been indoors?

    Along with Trump and Reagan’s second inaugurals, the first seven inaugurations were all indoors.

    Washington’s first inauguration took place at Federal Hall, with his second and President John Adams’ inauguration taking place at Congress Hall in Philadelphia before the nation’s capital moved to D.C.

    The first inauguration to be held outdoors was President James Monroe’s ceremony in 1817.

    Interestingly, Roosevelt’s fourth inaugural in 1945 was held outside at the White House with no parade due to the ongoing war effort.

    Other inaugurations that have been held inside include other inaugurations that occurred due to a surprise event, such as a president’s death. For instance, President Harry Truman was sworn in the White House after Roosevelt’s death in 1945, and President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in on Air Force One after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

    Did an outdoor inauguration kill President William Henry Harrison?

    President William Henry Harrison, who was 68 years old at the of his inauguration, spent around two hours speaking with no coat or hat for his ceremony in 1841, according to the University of Virginia’s Miller Center.

    The known outdoorsman and military veteran remained in his wet clothing for the receptions after his speech, which led the last president from the Whig party to catch a cold. The cold led to pneumonia, which killed him on April 4, 1841, exactly one month after he entered to the presidency.

  • Cold temperatures, dry weather arrives in western Washington for MLK Jr. holiday weekend


    WASHINGTON STATE — As western Washington welcomes the long holiday weekend, cold temperatures are coming with it and staying into next week.

    A cold weather pattern is settling in and will hang out in the region through midweek.

    It’s been an unusually dry January in western Washington. A strong ridge of high pressure along the West Coast is steering storms out of the way.

    On a normal year, Sea-Tac Airport receives around 5.7” of rain. More than halfway through the month of January, Sea-Tac Airport has measured 1.04” in its rain gauges.

    This pattern in the atmosphere is allowing for an arctic air mass to push in from the north. This arctic air mass will affect more than two-thirds of the country. Much of the lower 48 will experience temperatures 10-30 below normal.

    Light winds from a northeasterly direction will bring in some of the chilly air into the Pacific Northwest. Low temperatures across the region will plunge to 27-30. Daytime high temperatures will be 40-42.

    These high/low temperatures are expected to grip western Washington through at least the next 7 days.

    This ridge of high pressure is typically associated with mostly clear conditions and calm winds. But this also lets sinking air cool, and reach saturation, and fog can develop and low stratus clouds. The fog struggles to mix around with little winds and can linger through the early afternoon. With low temperatures hovering in the upper 20s and low 30s, freezing fog and black ice can form. Drive with caution.

    Another good reminder – protect pets, pipes, and people. Bring outdoor pets inside, cover exposed pipes, and check in on your older family, friends, and neighbors.

    Double-check to make sure any and all portable heaters are being used correctly to avoid any fire hazards.

    HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A Democrat in Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives has died, the House Democratic caucus said Sunday night, leaving the chamber deadlocked at a 101-101 partisan divide.

    Rep. Matt Gergely, D-Allegheny, died Sunday. He was 45, House Democrats said.

    Neither House Democrats or Gergely’s family disclosed a cause, although they said two weeks ago that he had suffered a “medical emergency over the holidays requiring hospitalization” in the days before the chamber convened its two-year session earlier this month.

    House Democrats won a one-seat margin in November’s election, the same one-seat margin that Democrats had maintained in the last legislative session. Gergely’s death means the chamber will be tied at 101-101 until a special election is held to fill the seat in the heavily Democratic Pittsburgh-area district.

    In the last two-year session, House Democratic majority managed through various vacancies in their ranks, at times bogging down the pace of lawmaking during the two-year legislative session.

    In their statement Sunday night, House Democrats said a special election to fill Gergely’s seat will be called by Speaker Joanna McClinton, D-Philadelphia, at a later date.

    “Matt will be desperately missed in Harrisburg and we know his passing is a tremendous loss to his communities in Western Pennsylvania. Please join us in keeping his wife and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic time,” House Democrats said.

    Incoming first lady Melania Trump says she’s packed and ready to move back into the White House, where son Barron will have a bedroom, and she plans to revive her Be Best children’s initiative.

    Trump also said in a taped interview broadcast Monday on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” that an upcoming documentary on her life that is set to be distributed by Amazon Prime Video later this year was her idea based on the reception to the memoir she released last year.

    “So I had an idea to, to make a movie, to make a film about my life,” she said. “My life is incredible. It’s incredibly busy. And, I told my agent, you know, I have this idea, so please, you know, go out and, make a deal for me.”

    The documentary is the latest connection between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Donald Trump. The company in December announced plans to donate $1 million to the president-elect’s inauguration fund, and said it would also stream Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20 on its Prime Video service, a separate in-kind donation worth another $1 million.

    In an abrupt shift from the usual soundtrack at Donald Trump’s political rallies, former First Lady Melania Trump made a theatrical entrance at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night, walking in to the arena to a Beethoven symphony for her first public appearance since March.

    A week away from the inauguration and the Trumps’ return to the White House, Melania Trump said she is “packed” and has picked out the furniture she wants to bring to the executive mansion. The second time has been easier, she said, because she knows the rooms where the family will be living.

    “I already packed. I already selected the, you know, the furniture that needs to go in. So it’s, it’s very different, a transition, this time, second time around,” she said.

    Their son, Barron, 18 and a freshman at New York University, will have a room for when he visits.

    Melania Trump said she’s still hiring for her team and plans to resurrect and expand her Be Best initiative, which was centered around childhood well-being, social media use and opioid abuse.

    Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels stunned top-seed Detroit Lions as the Commanders reached their first NFC title game in 33 years at Ford Field in Michigan.

    Daniels threw for two touchdowns and fellow rookie Mike Sainristil had two interceptions – dazzling performances that sent the Lions to an early playoff exit.

    The sixth-seeded Commanders (14-5) were nearly double-digit underdogs against the Super Bowl favourites (15-3), who doomed their chances of living up to expectations by turning the ball over five times.

    Sainristil, who won a national title at Michigan last season, picked off his second pass on a trick play with receiver Jameson Williams throwing into coverage off a reverse in the fourth quarter.

    Safety Quan Martin returned a pick 40 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to put Washington ahead 24-14.

    Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff threw three picks and lost a fumble, turning it over three times in the ill-fated first half. He finished 23 of 40 for 313 yards with a touchdown pass to Sam LaPorta that gave the Lions their last lead midway through the second quarter.

    Daniels finished with 299 yards passing and 51 yards rushing and became the second rookie quarterback to knock off a top-seeded team, joining Joe Flacco, who led Baltimore past Tennessee in 2009.

    First-year coach Dan Quinn led Washington to its first playoff win in 19 years last week. The Commanders rallied past Tampa Bay for their sixth comeback win and fifth straight on the final play from scrimmage in regulation or overtime.

    Washington outscored Detroit 28-14 in the second quarter – the highest-scoring quarter in NFL playoff history – to take a 31-21 lead at halftime.

    Daniels had 242 yards passing in the first half, setting a rookie record one week after becoming the first rookie to lead his team in yards rushing and passing in a playoff win.

    Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns while Amon-Ra St. Brown had eight receptions for 137 yards.

    Goff fumbled in a collapsing pocket on third-and-1 from the Commanders 17 late in the first quarter and Washington took advantage.

    Daniels converted a fourth-and-3 from the Detroit 9 to extend a drive capped by Robinson’s two-yard touchdown run.

    Three snaps after Daniels’ touchdown throw to McLaurin, Goff overthrew his intended target and Martin intercepted it and took it to the end zone, putting the Commanders ahead 24-14. Goff took a hit from linebacker Frankie Luvu on the interception return and was evaluated for a concussion.

    Detroit’s defense could not stop the Commanders all night, and Washington set a season-high in points.

    The Lions started the second half strong, forcing Washington to punt for the first time and going 76 yards on 11 plays on the ensuing drive, capped by Gibbs’ eight-yard run for his second touchdown to make it 31-28.

    Washington had a 15-play, 70-yard touchdown drive – extended by Detroit having 12 men on the field when facing fourth and Robinson’s second short touchdown run restored the Commanders’ 10-point lead.

    “The kid’s heart rate hardly went up or down through three hours of a playoff game. That’s why Washington have won six in a row, and the last five of those have been decided in the final minute.

    “You don’t want to live that way all the time, but when you’ve got a kid that’s not afraid to be in that environment, that’s something – especially as you now go to a really tricky place, to Detroit, in the playoffs.”

    A former coach with the Buffalo Bills, Phoebe Schecter added: “This young man, he plays like a veteran, like a pro.

    That is indeed the next challenge that faces Daniels and this team, with the sixth-seeded Commanders now heading to Detroit to face the NFC’s No 1-ranked Lions, who are eyeing two-straight NFC Championship appearances.

    “You can tell he understands how to run that offense and what they’re asking him to do. And he’s got weapons. I mean, boy, they’ve got weapons.”

    Detroit have plenty of weapons too, mind you. This is the NFL’s top-ranked team in scoring offense, putting up a massive 33.2 points per game, while their 409.5 yards per game is second only to the Baltimore Ravens’ staggering average of 424.9.

    “I kind of stay in my own bubble right now, focus on what’s next,” Daniels said ahead of the Divisional Round matchup with the Lions.

    “We’re not going to give up until the clock hits zero. We’re going to keep fighting until the end.”
