NFL MVP watch 2024: Ranking finalists with award odds, stats
It’s a shame that voting for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award ended at the conclusion of the regular season, especially after battle we saw between Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Baltimore Ravens passer Lamar Jackson in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs. Allen led the Bills to a 27-25 win over the Ravens and moved his team on to the AFC Championship versus the Kansas City Chiefs, where Buffalo’s season ended.
Both Allen and Jackson, in the primes of their careers, put together compelling cases to walk away as the 2024 MVP. After winning the prestigious honor last season, Jackson put together one of the best statistical campaigns of all time and was even better than his previous two MVP seasons. Allen came close to matching Jackson in several statistical categories and orchestrated one of the best years of his career during a transition period for the Bills’ roster. So who has the edge?
We asked 13 analysts — Matt Bowen, Dan Graziano, Kalyn Kahler, Matt Miller, Dan Orlovsky, Jordan Reid, Aaron Schatz, Ben Solak, Mike Tannenbaum, Lindsey Thiry, Seth Walder, Field Yates and myself — to vote on the top players in the MVP race. While it was a two-player race at the end, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley more than earned his way into the mix, as did the career-best play demonstrated by Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow in a season where his team failed to make the playoffs.
Here’s a look at how the final rankings played out. (All odds are via ESPN BET.)

Walder’s extended top-100 MVP ballotFirst place votes: 7
Final odds: -5002024 stats: 3,731 passing yards, 28 TDs, 6 INTs, 77.3 QBR (531 rushing yards, 12 TDs)
Season in review: The MVP is a regular season award, so what Allen did in the postseason to lead the Bills to the AFC title game won’t factor into voting. But how he put his team in position to get there by locking up the No. 2 seed will.
Allen played some of the best, mistake-free football of his career and had the lowest percentage of plays with a sack, fumble or interception (4.2%) since the AFL-NFL merger (1970). His 40 total touchdowns were the fourth-most in the NFL while he put together a second consecutive season with at least 25 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns. His three games with multiple passing and rushing touchdowns (vs. the Cardinals, Rams and Lions) were the most in an NFL season.
The case for Allen over Jackson: Voter fatigue could be at play given Jackson has won the MVP twice. We’ve seen this happen in the NBA when Charles Barkley won the MVP in 1993 over Michael Jordan (who had just won it the previous two seasons) and recently with Nikola Jokic getting snubbed for Joel Embiid after locking up two-straight MVPs from 2021-22. Additionally, voters may consider Ravens running back Derrick Henry‘s impact (1,921 rushing yards, NFL-best 16 TDs) and argue that Jackson may have competition for being the best player on his own team.
This is an award driven by narratives, and the one in Buffalo is that Allen did more with less after the Bills parted ways with his No. 1 and No. 2 receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, respectively, in the offseason. Buffalo also had only one Pro Bowl selection outside of Allen (left tackle Dion Dawkins) and no All-Pros. The Bills were the first team in NFL history to beat two 15-win teams when they knocked off the Lions and Chiefs in games where Allen racked up 747 total yards, six touchdowns and one interception while not being sacked.
MVP moment: Against the 49ers in December, Allen demonstrated his dominance when he threw a short pass in the red zone to Amari Cooper, who then pitched the ball back to the quarterback. Allen ran the ball down the sideline while being squeezed by three 49ers defenders and stretched his arm out as he broke the plane of the end zone for a 9-yard score.
THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING WE HAVE EVER SEEN.

— Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) December 2, 2024
Standout stat: Allen was at his best when opposing defenses cranked up the heat. His 85.3 QBR and 6.5 yards per dropback when pressured were the highest ever in a season since ESPN began tracking pressures in 2009.
First place votes: 6
Final odds: +3502024 stats: 4,712 passing yards, 41 TDs, 4 INTs, 77.3 QBR (915 rushing yards, 4 TDs)
Season in review: Think of everything Jackson achieved one season after winning his second MVP. The 28-year-old quarterback is the first player in NFL history with 4,000 passing yards and 900 rushing yards in a season, had the fourth-best passer rating (119.6) in NFL history and is the first reigning MVP to toss 40 touchdowns a season after winning the award. He also set career highs in passing touchdowns, passing yards, yards per attempt (8.8) and TD/INT ratio (10.3).
Baltimore won the AFC North for a second straight season while becoming the first team ever to account for 4,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards. Derrick Henry‘s season played a huge factor in that feat, but it was Jackson who accounted for nearly 27% of his team’s rushing yards. Players typically don’t get astronomically better after reaching their peak, yet Jackson improved in a handful of categories — passing yards, touchdown passes (17 more in 2024), off-target percentage (14.9%) and Total QBR — from last season. He also set franchise records in yards per attempt and passing touchdowns.
The case for Jackson over Allen: Jackson’s passing reached historic levels, but it was his rushing impact that separated him from Allen as the first quarterback with 40-plus touchdown passes and more than 600 rushing yards — and his statistical impact in 2024 was better than his previous two MVP seasons. The supporting cast argument that would appear to favor Allen can be debated by the fact that Buffalo running back James Cook had as many rushing touchdowns as Henry (16), too.
But Jackson’s case is strongest when looking at how he performed against the NFL’s best teams. Jackson’s 7-3 record against playoff teams trumps Allen’s 2-3. Against top-10 defenses, Jackson has the edge in several categories: win-loss record (4-2), EPA/play (0.27) and total touchdowns (15).
MVP moment: The Ravens went into Houston on Christmas Day and stunned a fellow playoff team in a 29-point blowout, as Jackson broke Michael Vick’s record for the most rushing yards by a quarterback. Jackson accounted for three touchdowns and set the new rushing record with 87 yards on four attempts. The historical achievement was highlighted by his season-long 48-yard touchdown run where he reached a career-best top speed of 21.25 mph (NFL Next Gen Stats).

— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) December 25, 2024
Standout stat: Jackson is the first player in NFL history with at least 40 passing touchdowns and four or fewer interceptions in a season.
First place votes: 0
Final odds: +80002024 stats: 2,005 rushing yards, 13 TDs (278 receiving yards, 2 TDs)
Season in review: Had Philadelphia not rested its starters in a Week 18 game against the Giants — Barkley’s former team — after locking up the NFC’s No. 2 seed, it’s safe to say the running back likely would’ve broken Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record (2,105). Barkley averaged 125.3 rushing yards per game and became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards. But like the four others who achieved that feat before him, Barkley likely won’t win the MVP award.
Barkley’s impact on the Eagles’ offense was felt the strongest in his 11 games with 100 rushing yards — the most ever by any player in their first season with a team — and how his presence in the backfield helped quarterback Jalen Hurts cut his turnovers in half in 2024 (down from 20 to 10).
MVP moment: Barkley shredded the Rams in a November meeting where he rushed for 255 yards (9.8 yards per rush) and two touchdowns. Even though that game was at SoFi Stadium, Barkley walked off the field that evening to “MVP!” chants.
Standout stat: Barkley’s 1,440 rushing yards before contact are the highest in a season over the past 15 years.
First place votes: 0
Final odds: +250002024 stats: 4,918 passing yards, 43 TDs, 9 INTs, 74.7 QBR (201 rushing yards, 2 TDs)
Season in review: It’s a shame that Cincinnati wasted the best season of Burrow’s career with a defense that prevented the Bengals from making a postseason run. Cincinnati was 4-8 as late as Dec. 1, but it found its way into the mix for the AFC’s No. 7 seed in Week 18. Burrow was the reason for that as he had the league-lead in passing yards and touchdowns, coupled with the fifth-lowest interception rate (1.4%) and fifth-highest completion percentage (70.6%) in the NFL.
The 28-year-old quarterback’s fifth season will be remembered for the heavy load he shouldered despite losses that don’t reflect his stellar play. Cincinnati lost five games when Burrow threw at least three touchdowns, and the Bengals’ 25.5 points allowed per game were the third-most ever among teams that had a quarterback throw for 40 touchdowns.
MVP moment: Burrow threw for 412 yards, three touchdowns and ran in another in Cincinnati’s 30-24 overtime win in Denver in Week 17. As he did all season, he delivered in a must-win game to keep Cincinnati’s faint playoff hopes alive; it was the Bengals’ first win against a team with a winning record.
Standout stat: Burrow had eight straight games with three passing touchdowns, which tied Andrew Luck (2018) and Peyton Manning (2024) for the second-longest streak in NFL history.

Best places to watch from Volusia
Back-to-back rocket launches are potentially scheduled to lift off Tuesday. And depending on weather and visibility, there could be a show in the sky above Volusia County.
Weather permitting, SpaceX will launch a payload of 21 Starlink internet satellites in the early morning on Tuesday and will launch Maxar Space Systems’ fifth and sixth WorldView Legion imagery satellites Tuesday evening, Federal Aviation Administration operations plan advisories show.
Tuesday’s launches were originally scheduled for early Monday morning and Monday evening, but were postponed amid a National Weather Service dense fog advisory.
Rockets launch from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral, Florida, in Brevard County, which is an hour east of the Orlando theme parks. Depending on cloud cover, weather and visibility, people from Daytona Beach to Titusville to Melbourne Beach and Vero Beach might see a nice streak in the sky — given the proximity to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
Below are suggestions on where to watch the rocket launch from the New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange areas, and other things to know. If there are changes to the launch schedule, this story will be updated.
For questions or comments, email Florida Today Space Reporter Rick Neale at rneale@floridatoday.com. For more space news from the USA TODAY Network, visit floridatoday.com/space.
Where in Florida can you see a rocket launch? Can you see a rocket launch from New Smyrna Beach?
Weather permitting and depending on cloud cover, yes, rocket launches from neighboring Space Coast could be visible in the Volusia County area.
When there’s a launch window in the middle of the night or very early morning, there’s an opportunity for unique photos — the rocket lights up the dark sky and the contrail after makes for a great photo.
Below are suggestions on where to watch them and photos of previous rocket launches as seen from the Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange areas of Florida.

Seven Players To Watch In Talent-Loaded Beanpot Tournament
Some of the best talent college hockey has to offer will take center stage during the Dunkin’ Beanpot at TD Garden.
It feels like Boston College is bursting at the seams with NHL prospects while Boston University, Northeastern and Harvard have their share of top-tier difference-makers ready to make an impact on the tournament.
The high-end skill sets will be on display starting Monday night when BU takes on Harvard in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. ET followed by BC squaring off in the night cap against Northeastern, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. Both games can be seen on NESN.
Here are seven players to have an eye on in the Beanpot:
Gabe Perreault, Boston College
Perreault certainly won’t hear cheers much longer at TD Garden since he’s a 2023 first-round pick (No. 23 overall) of the New York Rangers. But Perreault gives Eagles fans something to cheer about all the time with his dynamic ability. The sophomore forward leads the No. 1-ranked team in the country with 32 points from nine goals and 23 assists. Perreault’s assist total ranks second in the nation.Story continues below advertisement
Quinn Hutson, Boston University
Hutson is just the latest from his family to star for the Terriers — his brother, Lane, had a ton of success with BU, which has now carried over with the Montreal Canadiens. The junior forward is as well-balanced as they come, logging 15 goals and 15 assists on the season. It’s the third straight season Hutson has tallied at least 15 goals and he’s on pace this season to set new career highs.Ryan Leonard, Boston College
Leonard has lived up to the billing of being the No. 8 overall pick by the Washington Capitals in the 2023 NHL Draft since stepping foot onto the Chestnut Hill campus. That’s not an easy feat. The sophomore forward enters the tournament as the top goal-scorer in the nation with 22 tallies and he also has eight assists for 30 points. The Amherst, Mass., native definitely has the look of a player who will make a name for himself in the NHL.Jack Williams, Northeastern
Williams will have a big say in Northeastern trying to capture a Beanpot three-peat. He leads the Huskies with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points. The junior forward also has three game-winning goals under his belt this season and showed his ability to come up clutch during last year’s Beanpot when he netted the game-tying goal in the championship game against BU.James Hagens, Boston College
Macklin Celebrini starred for BU last season and performed well on the Beanpot stage before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL draft. Hagens is looking to do the same. The highly touted NHL prospect is having a solid freshman season with the Eagles. He’s done more setting up than scoring with 21 assists compared to six goals, but he’s an adept playmaker even though he just turned 18 years old three months ago.Story continues below advertisement
Joe Miller, Harvard
The 2020 Toronto Maple Leafs sixth-round draft pick will look to leave an imprint on the Beanpot. The junior forward leads the Crimson with 15 points off four goals and 11 assists. If Harvard can make some noise in the tournament, Miller likely will be at the center of it.Jacob Fowler, Boston College
Fowler is the favorite to win the Eberly Award, which is given to the top goalie of the tournament. The sophomore netminder has been rock-solid in net all season, boasting a spectacular 1.63 goals-against average an .938 save percentage en route to a 17-3-1 record with six shutouts. Two more good games from Fowler and he could walk away with some hardware.Honorable Mention: Teddy Stiga (BC), Cole Eiserman (BU), Cam Lund (Northeastern), Drew Fortescue (BC).

Chelsea will be especially desperate for a win, as the club sits sixth on the Premier League table, one point behind fifth-place Newcastle United and one point behind Manchester City, who was just humiliated 5-1 on Sunday by Arsenal, in fourth place. That means Chelsea, which has played one fewer match than either aforementioned club, is just one point outside of a Europa League spot for next season, as well as just one point behind Champions League qualification.
A win would see Chelsea overtake the fourth spot on the table and get into that much-coveted Champions League classification area, reserved for the top four of the EPL every season. We don’t have to explain how valuable that is for every big club, like Chelsea, both financially and for prestige.
How to Watch Chelsea vs. West Ham United:
- Date: Monday, February 3, 2025
- Time: 3:00 PM ET
- Venue: Stamford Bridge
- Channel: USA Network (4K)
- Stream: Fubo (try for free)
Chelsea is in just decent form at the moment, coming off a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, a 3-1 win over lowly Wolves, and a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, one that saw Noni Madueke be the lone scorer for the Blues.
West Ham United, meanwhile, will be happy with any sort of result on Monday, as the club doesn’t have much hope of earning an international competition spot this season. The Irons are trying to stave off relegation, if anything, as West Ham United sits 15th on the table, just two spots clear of danger, albeit with a 10-point cushion over 18th-place Leicester City. Most recently, the Hammers drew 1-1 with Aston Villa thanks to a 70th-minute goal by Emerson Palmieri.

Why January is undeniably quarterback season: Watch
To thrive in the NFL’s postseason you need an elite quarterback. There are no second chances; it’s one and done. Just ask the Detroit Lions.
The Saquon Barkley-led Philadelphia Eagles may challenge that theory but the exception generally doesn’t make the rule.
On the latest episode of “The Athletic Football Show”, Robert Mays was joined by Derrik Klassen and old friend Nate Tice to discuss why January is quarterback season.
A partial transcript has been edited for clarity and length. The full episode is available on YouTube below or in “The Athletic Football Show” feed on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Robert: This seems so stupid and self-evident. But we’ve done this show in the past and I don’t think we’ve talked about this – transcendent quarterbacks are the teams that win in January. I’m looking at this from the point of view of somebody whose team was hiring a head coach this offseason. You look at what’s worked and what hasn’t and what lessons you can learn from around the NFL. What kind of offensive coordinator do you hire? What position groups do you pay? I think those conversations are important. But when you have one of those quarterbacks, those conversations matter less.
Should you think your team can skimp on receiving talent because the Bills and Chiefs do? Or is that something where what happens with Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes are different conversations than what should happen for everybody else? Why this feels important now is because I don’t know if Jayden Daniels is already the fifth-best quarterback in the league, but I think in some ways he’s on his way to being one of these players where what he is papers over certain weaknesses you can have in other elements of your roster.
We’re going to look at percentages over time of what types of coaches with certain backgrounds win games and Super Bowls. Part of me wants to be like ‘don’t look at Sean McDermott’s background when figuring out why the Bills are successful. Don’t look at John Harbaugh’s background as you’re trying to figure out why the Ravens are successful’. They’re good coaches because they’re good coaches, but they have the aliens. And when you have one of those guys, everything else starts to matter not less, but in a slightly different way. We can try to figure out the details and pie charts of how you’re paying people and all that stuff until the cows come home. Having one of the dudes is probably the most important factor in you getting to this Super Bowl weekend.
Derrik: The team that’s good to put against this is the Green Bay Packers because they’re a team that doesn’t have star talent at the receiver position or the offensive line… it’s a lot of good enough. When you have Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson, a lot of good enough will get you into this spot where you can go to a conference championship game. A quarterback like Jordan Love is good but he’s not one of those guys. So, when you’re dropping down a level you end up in a spot where you’re always in the game, but getting over the hump is a lot harder when you don’t have that one guy who can do it for you.
Robert: I love this because I think it’s piecing together two different things. Is the Ravens’ offensive line that demonstrably better than the Packers’ offensive line?
Derrik: No, but they have Lamar Jackson (laughs).
Nate: No, but same tier.
Robert: And then is the Bills’ receiving core demonstrably better than the Packers’ receiving core?
Derrik: Not really.
Robert: Probably not. I think we collectively like Khalil Shakir, but I don’t think they’re in a vastly different tier. But because the Bills have Josh Allen, it all feels very different, and it changes the calculus everywhere else. So I think that’s a perfect guy to throw out there Derrik because Jordan Love is a good quarterback, but he is not one of these guys and it changes everything about the way we feel about how everything else is constructed.

January is undeniably quarterback season, and there are a few reasons why this is the case. With the NFL playoffs in full swing, the spotlight is on the quarterbacks leading their teams to victory. From clutch performances to game-winning drives, these signal-callers are proving why they are the most important players on the field.Additionally, January is also the time when college football’s top quarterbacks are preparing for the NFL draft. With the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine just around the corner, these young guns are looking to showcase their skills and impress scouts and coaches alike.
But perhaps the biggest reason why January is quarterback season is the Super Bowl. The biggest game of the year often comes down to the play of the quarterbacks, with legends like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes cementing their legacies on the biggest stage.
So as we gear up for another exciting month of football, be sure to keep an eye on the quarterbacks who are making their mark and leading their teams to victory. After all, January is undeniably quarterback season.
