Chief Justice John Roberts defends judicial independence, says it is under threat in several ways

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chief Justice John Roberts issued a defense Tuesday of judicial independence, which he said is under threat from intimidation, disinformation and the prospect of public officials defying court orders.

Roberts laid out his concerns in his annual report on the federal judiciary. It was released after a year where the nation’s court system was unusually enmeshed in a closely fought presidential race, with then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump assailing the integrity of judges who ruled against him as he faced criminal charges for which he denied wrongdoing.

Trump won the race following a landmark Supreme Court immunity decision penned by Roberts that, along with another high court decision halting efforts to disqualify him from the ballot, removed obstacles to his election.

The immunity decision was criticized by Democrats like President Joe Biden, who later called for term limits and an enforceable ethics code following criticism over undisclosed trips and gifts from wealthy benefactors to some justices.

Roberts, for his part, introduced his letter by recounting a story about King George III stripping colonial judges of lifetime appointments, an order that was “not well received.”

Trump is now readying for a second term as president with an ambitious conservative agenda, elements of which are likely to be legally challenged and end up before the court whose conservative majority includes three justices appointed by Trump during his first term.

Roberts and Trump clashed in 2018 when the chief justice rebuked the president for denouncing a judge who rejected his migrant asylum policy as an “Obama judge.”

In 2020, Roberts criticized comments made by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer while the Supreme Court was considering a high-profile abortion case.

Roberts didn’t mention Trump, Biden or any other specific leader in this year’s annual report. Instead, he wrote generally that even if court decisions are unpopular or mark a defeat for a presidential administration, other branches of government must be willing to enforce them to ensure the rule of law.

He pointed to the Brown v. Board of Education decision that desegrated schools in 1954 as one that needed federal enforcement in the face of resistance from southern governors.

“It is not in the nature of judicial work to make everyone happy,” he wrote.

The chief justice also decried elected officials across the political spectrum who have “raised the specter of open disregard for federal court rulings.”

“Attempts to intimidate judges for their rulings in cases are inappropriate and should be vigorously opposed,” he wrote.

While public officials and others have the right to criticize rulings, they should also be aware that their statements can “prompt dangerous reactions by others.”

Threats targeting federal judges have more than tripled over the last decade, according to U.S. Marshals Service statistics. State court judges in Wisconsin and Maryland were killed at their homes in 2022 and 2023, Roberts wrote.

“Violence, intimidation, and defiance directed at judges because of their work undermine our Republic, and are wholly unacceptable,” he wrote.

Roberts also pointed to disinformation about court rulings as a threat to judges’ independence, saying that social media can magnify distortions and even be exploited by “hostile foreign state actors” to exacerbate divisions.

Against a backdrop of those heightened divisions, Americans’ confidence in the country’s judicial system and courts has dropped to a record low of 35%, a Gallup poll found.

Chief Justice John Roberts defends judicial independence, says it is under threat in several ways

In a recent speech, Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court spoke out in defense of judicial independence, warning that it is under threat in several ways. Roberts emphasized the importance of an independent judiciary in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens.

Roberts pointed to attacks on judges and the judiciary from politicians, interest groups, and the media as one of the key threats to judicial independence. He expressed concern that these attacks undermine public confidence in the judiciary and erode the separation of powers that is essential to a functioning democracy.

The Chief Justice also highlighted the dangers of political pressure and interference in the judicial process, noting that judges must be free to make decisions based on the law and the Constitution, rather than political considerations. Roberts called on all Americans to respect the role of the judiciary and to support its independence.

As the highest-ranking member of the U.S. judiciary, Chief Justice Roberts’ words carry significant weight. His defense of judicial independence serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of a strong and independent judiciary in preserving the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

8 Ways Wicked 2 Will Be Different From The First Movie

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wicked, the 2024 movie and the Broadway show.Wicked has become a bigger hit than anyone expected, raising expectations sky-high for the back half expected in November of 2025. Yet as the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) progresses and the stakes are raised, fans new and old can expect some key differences between the first and second movies. Wicked: Part Two will continue the prequel tale of the (in)famous witches of Oz, who are well on their way to being known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good by Wicked‘s ending.

While the first act of the Broadway musical Wicked follows Elphaba and Glinda’s school days and their enemies-to-friends arc, the second act shows them grappling with the harsh realities of Oz after leaving school (Elphaba having flown away in a blaze of glory and Glinda presumably actually graduating). The two-part movie adaptation is following the same framework, meaning there will be some fundamental differences between the two installments. However, even if the music, story structure, and characterizations shift, audiences can expect the same breathtaking spectacle as was delivered in 2024.

8

Elphaba & Glinda Will Be Split Up In Wicked 2

Elphaba & Glinda Aren’t Conveniently In The Same Place Anymore

The first half of Wicked does the bulk of the work of establishing Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship, a task made much easier by the fact that they are within proximity of each other for most of the runtime, attending Shiz University and being forced to room together. This allows for some more inconsequential shenanigans and humorous beats stemming from their contrasting personalities, as well as sweet affirmations of their friendship. However, this is all the groundwork for their relationship to still matter deeply throughout Wicked 2 when physical distance separates them.

How Old Are Elphaba & Glinda In Wicked

Elphaba and Glinda, the two main characters from the Broadway musical, are played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the Wicked movie.

As Elphaba is on the run, she does not risk casually meeting with her family or friends. She and Glinda have only a handful of scenes together, which are emotionally charged moments defined by conflict or reconciliation between the two. Their friendship gradually developing through lazy nights in their dorm room isn’t in the cards because of their locations. Wicked possibly teases an Elphaba and Glinda flashback in the next movie, which would add to their screen time together, but they are still rarely in the same place in the main timeline.

7

Shiz Won’t Be The Primary Setting In Wicked 2

The Days At “Dear Old Shiz” Are In The Past, Changing The Nature Of The Story

The majority of Wicked (part one) also takes place at Shiz University, facilitating Elphaba and Glinda’s burgeoning friendship through a natural story setup that has them in the same place. Wicked initially launches itself into a familiar boarding school story (with the age of the characters being older than in most similar narratives), with some nostalgic tropes of a magical curriculum, a bully turned friend, a night out dancing, etc. However, school cannot last forever, and the characters grow up and are forced to test what they have learned in the outside world.

Assuming that Wicked: Part Two picks up where the second act of the show does, the story starts after a time jump. Elphaba effectively dropped out of Shiz, but the others presumably finished their education. Glinda is now a spokesperson, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) is the Captain of the Guard, and Nessarose (Marissa Bode) is the governor of Munchkinland. The setting is less one defined place for it all to play out, as Elphaba especially is constantly moving around. The overall tone shifts with less comfort and stability as was found at Shiz, even if there were hints of something sinister there.

6

Wicked 2 Will Have Original Songs

The Legendary Wicked Composer Is Returning Yet Again With New Tunes

A highly anticipated element of Wicked: Part Two is the confirmed two original songs to be added to the soundtrack. It was announced ahead of Wicked‘s release that it would include some new tracks, as the overall runtime is greater and more music is needed to keep up the pacing. With the first half of Wicked simply having more and longer musical numbers already, it was natural that the second installment would end up with more original musical material. The movie’s “One Short Day” already includes a new song embedded within it, performed by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in their magical Wicked cameo.

Now the focus is on the next two songs that Stephen Schwartz, the composer behind the Broadway production of Wicked, will write for the subsequent movie. Additionally, Cynthia Erivo has teased the Wicked song she co-wrote for the next movie, which appears to be another solo ballad performed by Elphaba. Schwartz has a monumental task ahead of him in delivering songs that live up to the tunes that have been iconic for more than 20 years, made only more so by their execution in the highly acclaimed movie. Yet the prospect of Erivo performing another showstopper is very promising.

5

Nessarose & Boq Will Both (To An Extent) Be Villains In Wicked 2

Nessa Becomes The Wicked Witch Of The East, & Boq Another Enemy To Elphaba

The fraudulent Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) and his sorceress ally Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) remain the primary villains in the second half of Wicked. However, the supporting characters of Nessarose and Boq (Ethan Slater) also become somewhat antagonistic, making selfishly dangerous decisions — on both their parts, because of a desire for love. Glinda suggests that the Munchkin boy who admires her ask out Elphaba’s younger sister to get him off her back, which leads to Boq and Nessa being in a perfunctory relationship wherein Boq does not return Nessa’s feelings.

Why Wicked’s Love Triangle Is Way More Complicated Than I Thought

Wicked’s characters are in a chain of unrequited love — Nessa to Boq, Boq to Glinda, Glinda to Fiyero — which complicates the main love triangle.

Both character arcs are delicate matters, as they need to portray unrequited love as a corrupting force that leads to greater consequences. Nessa is technically the legitimate leader of Munchkinland but becomes a tyrannical ruler in an effort to keep Boq near her, coming to be known as the more quietly evil Wicked Witch of the East. In the show, she doesn’t hesitate to blame Elphaba for Boq’s transformation into the Tin Man; Boq then leads a mob of witch hunters against Elphaba. Both characters are lessons in denial and make the story more dynamic with more enemies at large.

4

Fiyero Will Have A More Active Role In Wicked 2

Fiyero Doesn’t Sit Idly By When Elphaba Is In Trouble

Fiyero is largely pulled through the plot by Elphaba and Ginda in the first half of Wicked. He ropes the entire school into a somewhat illegal night out when he first arrives at Shiz and performs “Dancing Through Life.” His arc then sees him falling into a relationship with Glinda without much thought, and helping Elphaba rescue the lion cub when she (possibly unintentionally) leaves only him awake when casting a sleeping spell on the rest of the class. However, Wicked‘s ending shows Fiyero leaving Shiz in a rush after Elphaba is declared a danger to the public.

This sets up his role in the rest of the story: Fiyero becomes the Wizard’s Captain of the Guard, a position he mainly uses to search for Elphaba, trying to reach her before someone who would harm her does. He stays with Glinda all this time, but pretty much the moment he reunites with Elphaba, he confesses that she is the one he truly loves and leaves with her. The show also includes a dramatic confrontation where Fiyero threatens Glinda to force the other guards to let Elphaba go, which will likely transfer over.

3

There Won’t Be As Many Big Musical Numbers In Wicked 2

The Rest Of Wicked’s Soundtrack Limits Opportunities For The Wicked Movie Production To Show Off Its Strengths

In addition to there just being more songs in the first half of Wicked, there are a greater number of bombastic ensemble numbers. Now that director Jon M. Chu and his production team have proven that they are masters in staging and shooting such sequences, the fact that there aren’t as many of them in the future is a disappointment. There is the possibility that one of the new songs could be another ensemble number, or that the movie will extend some of the shorter songs performed by the entire cast from the musical.

As performed on stage, the biggest musical number in Wicked‘s second act is the first one, “Thank Goodness,” where Glinda tries to reassure the Ozian public while the Wicked Witch is still free. “Finale” is a very brief reprise of “No One Mourns the Wicked,” while “March of the Witch Hunters” claims some dark theatrics, but is also on the short and simple side. There are some opportunities to flesh out these songs, but people can generally expect that they won’t be the same as the back-to-back bangers of “What Is This Feeling?,” “Dancing Through Life,” and “One Short Day.”

2

Wicked 2 Will Overlap More With The Wizard Of Oz

Wicked’s Timeline Eventually Reaches The Original Storyline

Wicked begins in what can be called sequel territory for The Wizard of Oz, with Glinda greeting the Munchkinlanders after the Wicked Witch’s reported death, a scene during which she mentions that the Wizard has already left Oz (to take Dorothy home but accidentally leaving her behind, according to the 1939 movie). Wicked then segues into its main setting, long before Dorothy’s arrival when Elphaba and Glinda meet at school. Most of Wicked‘s narrative is definitively a prequel, delving into the characterizations and backstories of people who will someday fill out Dorothy’s adventure.

Every Wizard Of Oz Character Who Appears In Wicked

Wicked includes many characters from the original Wizard of Oz story, but their arcs are reframed to reveal more about the complex politics of Oz.

However, Wicked does eventually catch up to The Wizard of Oz; going off the show, this is about midway through the second half, when a plot to endanger Nessarose to draw Elphaba out of hiding leads to Dorothy being brought to Oz and the death of the Wicked Witch of the East. Much of Elphaba’s actions are then concerned with getting back her sister’s shoes, which Dorothy has come into possession of. It begins to feel much more like a reimagining of The Wizard of Oz than a prequel, as the plot of the former is implied to be taking place off-screen.

1

Wicked 2 Will Feature Dorothy

Finally, the long-awaited and mysterious role of Dorothy in the Wicked movie adaptation will come to fruition in the next installment. Dorothy was teased in the Wicked trailers, although her face was never shown, and it is still unknown who is playing her in the movie. While Elphaba has face-to-face interactions with Dorothy in this narrative, Dorothy is never seen on stage in the Broadway production; she is only heard crying off-stage and is seen as a silhouette when she melts Elphaba.

Dorothy is seemingly set up to have a larger role in the movie, potentially taking inspiration from her single conversation with Elphaba in the original novel, despite the many major changes Wicked makes to the book. While fans of the show may be apprehensive of this change, there is some great potential for the movie to deal with themes of innocence in contrast with experience through Dorothy’s presence. Much about the sequel to Wicked is still shrouded in mystery, which will hopefully make the original and familiar elements all the more enjoyable when the movie finally arrives in theaters.

Miami Hurricanes part ways with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry

MIAMI – After a challenging season for the Miami Hurricanes’ defense, head coach Mario Cristobal announced Tuesday that Lance Guidry has been relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator.

The Hurricanes struggled defensively throughout the 2024 season, allowing an average of 23.9 points per game, which ranked 60th nationally. Within the conference, Miami gave up 30.8 points per game, placing them 14th.

Big plays were a recurring issue, with the Hurricanes surrendering nine plays of 50 yards or more. Additionally, opponents scored touchdowns on 62.9 percent of their trips to the red zone.

Tackling was another area of concern, as Miami ranked 99th nationally in tackling efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus.

In announcing the decision, Cristobal expressed gratitude for Guidry’s time with the program while emphasizing the need for improvement.

“I want to first thank Coach Guidry for his contributions to the University of Miami,” Cristobal said in a statement. “In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”

The Hurricanes are expected to begin the search for a new defensive coordinator immediately as they look to strengthen their program ahead of the 2025 season.

The Miami Hurricanes have announced that they will be parting ways with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry. This decision comes after a disappointing season for the Hurricanes, as they struggled on the defensive side of the ball.

Guidry joined the Hurricanes staff in 2018, but was unable to make a significant impact on the team’s defense. Under his leadership, the defense ranked near the bottom of the ACC in several key statistical categories.

Head coach Manny Diaz expressed his gratitude for Guidry’s efforts, but ultimately felt that a change was necessary in order to improve the team’s performance next season.

The search for a new defensive coordinator will begin immediately, as the Hurricanes look to turn things around and compete at a higher level in the ACC. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Kings part ways with coach Mike Brown months after giving him extension

Longtime Kings beat reporter James Ham breaks down the aftermath of the Kings reported firing of coach Mike Brown.

• Get NBA League Pass TODAY

The Sacramento Kings have fired coach Mike Brown less than halfway through his third season with the team mired in a five-game losing streak.

General manager Monte McNair called the move Friday a “difficult decision and thanked Brown for his work. Assistant Doug Christie will take over as interim coach, with his first game coming Saturday night at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Brown was the unanimous choice for NBA Coach of the Year in his first season in 2022-23, when he helped Sacramento end the longest playoff drought in NBA history at 16 seasons.

But Sacramento lost in the Play-In Tournament last year and was off to a 13-18 start this season, leading to the move to fire Brown about six months after he agreed to a contract extension through the 2026-27 season.

The Kings have lost an NBA-worst nine games this season after leading in the fourth quarter with the worst one coming in Brown’s final game as coach Thursday night against Detroit.

Sacramento led by 10 points with less than three minutes to play only to collapse down the stretch. Jaden Ivey converted a four-point play with 3 seconds left when he made a 3-pointer in the right corner and was fouled by De’Aaron Fox. That gave the Pistons a 114-113 win, leaving the Kings in 12th place in the Western Conference.

The Kings fire Mike Brown after a 13-18 start to his 3rd season at the helm and turn to assist Doug Christie in the interim.

The Kings came into the season with hopes of finishing in the top six in the West and avoiding the Play-In Tournament after acquiring DeMar DeRozan in a sign-and-trade deal over the summer to add to a core that featured Fox, Domanta Sabonis and Keegan Murray.

Fox, who is in the second-to-last year of his five-year, $163 million contract, declined to sign an extension in the offseason. He said on a podcast with Draymond Green earlier this month that he wanted to be on a team that could “compete at a high level.”

Sacramento has been far from that this season, thanks in large part to an NBA-worst 3-11 record in games decided by five points or fewer. Brown publicly criticized Fox for his role in the game-winning play Thursday night, saying he should have been closer to Ivey instead of committing a foul on a close out.

“You should be hugged up to your man at the 3-point line,” Brown said. “Everybody should, and why there was a closeout by Fox, I’m not sure. I got to go back and watch the tape. But for sure 100% we told our guys, can’t give up a 3, can’t give up a 3, can’t give up a 3, stay on the high side, stay on the high side.”

Brown compiled a 107-88 record in two-plus seasons in Sacramento with a winning record in both of his full seasons. Rick Adelman is the only other coach to post a winning record in a full season since the Kings moved to Sacramento

Brown previously had two stints as coach in Cleveland and spent one-plus season as Lakers coach. He has a 455-304 record and has made the playoffs in seven of his nine full seasons. He won Coach of the Year twice, also getting the award in Cleveland in 2008-09.

Christie will be the team’s eighth coach since owner Vivek Ranadive took over before the 2013-14 season. The Kings have the fourth-worst record in the NBA and the fewest playoff berths with just one during Ranadive’s ownership.

The Sacramento Kings have decided to part ways with head coach Mike Brown, just months after giving him a contract extension. The decision comes after a disappointing start to the season, with the Kings currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

Brown, who was hired as the Kings’ head coach in 2020, was given a one-year extension in the offseason after showing promise in his first year with the team. However, the team’s lackluster performance this season has led to the organization’s decision to make a change.

The Kings have announced that assistant coach Alvin Gentry will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Gentry brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as head coach for the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, and New Orleans Pelicans.

The Kings are hopeful that this coaching change will help turn their season around and lead to improved results on the court. Time will tell if this decision pays off for the struggling franchise.

Brad Pitt finds new ways to make Angelina Jolie divorce messier: Report

Photo: Brad Pitt finds new ways to make Angelina Jolie divorce messier: Report

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s divorce proceedings have reportedly taken a new turn.

The latest findings of RadarOnline.com claimed, “Their messy divorce is about to get even messier” as the Troy actor has filed new allegations against his former wife.

The documents obtained by the outlet state that Angelina Jolie has been delaying the release of the email conversations he’s requested.

In the wake of these allegations, it was also reported that the duo, who remained married for two years, had been offered to reunite for a new project.

Danny Rossner candidly shared his desire to cast both stars, Pitt and Jolie, in his upcoming flick in a resurfaced interview with New York Post.

During this chat, Danny reflected upon the movie, based on the nonfiction book The Hotel Martinez by Phillip M. Kenny, in which he wanted to cast both the A-listed celebrities.

“There is a love scene … It’s a torrid one, too,” the film producer began by saying. “It’s not salacious but there are very heavy love scenes. [Martinez] had a wife and he had a mistress.”

“Right now, I think, Brad Pitt’s in the $20 million (£15.65 million) to $25 million (£19.5 million) range (per movie) and Angelina Jolie is in the $15 million (£11.7 million) range,” he added.

Moreover, Rossner revealed his offer by saying, “In the 50-percent range above their going rate is what we’re prepared to offer.

According to recent reports, Brad Pitt has allegedly found new ways to make his divorce from Angelina Jolie even messier. Sources close to the couple have revealed that Pitt has been making increasingly bold moves in an attempt to gain leverage in the ongoing custody battle over their six children.

One of the most recent incidents involved Pitt reportedly refusing to allow Jolie access to their children during a scheduled visitation. This move has caused tension between the two and has only added to the already complicated divorce proceedings.

Additionally, Pitt has been making public statements that have been seen as undermining Jolie’s credibility and character. These actions have only fueled the fire of their highly publicized divorce and have made it even more contentious.

It seems that Brad Pitt is not backing down in this divorce battle and is determined to make it as messy as possible. Only time will tell how this will all play out in the end. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
