  • Four numbers to know ahead of Iowa-Washington WBB

It’s fair to say that the Hawkeyes season is hanging on by a thread. After another deflating loss, this time in Eugene, the Iowa women’s basketball team sits at 12-7 overall, with a 2-6 record in Big Ten play. Jan Jensen and Co. will look to salvage something from the west coast trip, facing Washington on Wednesday night in Seattle. It will be the 8th all-time meeting between the two programs, with the Huskies leading the series 5-2. Iowa will be looking to avoid their first six-game losing streak since 1999.

HawkeyeReport takes a look at some important numbers to know going into Thursday’s matchup between the Hawkeyes and Huskies.

53.3% – Washington effective field goal percentage

The Huskies offense is one of the most efficient in the entire country, with their 53.3% effective field goal percentage ranking 18th-best. They rank 1st in the Big Ten in three-point percentage (36.6%), 4th in two-point percentage (52.4%) and 3rd in overall field goal percentage (46.9%). Washington has shot better than 45% from the floor in 12 of their 19 games.

Over their last six games, the Huskies are averaging 79.5 points per game, while shooting 50.7% (187/369) from the floor and 42.5% (51/120) from three-point range. They’ve gone 4-2 over that stretch, including a win over Illinois, with their losses coming against Michigan State and Michigan.

    18.2% – Washington free-throw rate

As effective as the Huskies have been on the offensive end of the floor, free-throwing shooting has been nearly nonexistent. Washington ranks 357th out of 362 teams in free-throw attempt rate (18.2%) and are averaging just 11.16 attempts per game. Their 212 free-throw attempts rank dead last in the Big Ten, with UCLA (252) and Purdue (213) sitting ahead of them in 16th and 17th. It is worth noting that when the Huskies do get to the line, they make their free ones, ranking second in the Big Ten in free-throw percentage (77.8%).

84 – Combined made threes by Washington guards Sayvia Sellers and Elle Ladine

These two can flat out shoot the basketball and are the best three-point shooting duo in the Big Ten. Both guards, Sayvia Sellers and Elle Ladine have combined for 84 made threes this season, which is eight more than any other duo in the conference. They both make them at a high percentage too, with Sellers at 44.7% and Ladine at 37.2%.

An All-Pac 12 Freshman Team selection last season, Sayvia Sellers has knocked down 3+ threes in eight games and has made 18 over her last five games. As for Elle Ladine, she has made 3+ threes in six games, including a six made triples against Northwestern.

70.1% – Washington shooting percentage on close 2’s

Whether it’s frontcourt or backcourt players, Washington is absolutely elite when it comes to finishing around the basket. Their 70.1% shooting percentage within 4.5 feet of the basket ranks amongst the best in the country and leads the Big Ten, even outpacing UCLA (66.3%).

6’4 forward Dalayah Daniels leads the way, converting 68 of her 91 (74.7%) looks in close, while Eastern Michigan transfer, 6’3 forward Tayra Eke is 43 of 65 (66.1%) from within 4.5 feet. Guard Sayvia Sellers has also been very impressive, getting 36 of her 46 (78.3%) shot attempts to fall. All seven players that have made at least ten field goals from within 4.5 feet are shooting better than 60.0% from that area.

    1. 10: The number of wins Iowa has in their last 12 games, showing their strong momentum heading into the matchup against Washington.
    2. 1: The national ranking of Washington’s defense, which will pose a tough challenge for Iowa’s high-scoring offense.
    3. 22: The number of points per game that Iowa’s star player, Caitlin Clark, is averaging this season, making her a player to watch in this game.
    4. 5: The number of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for Washington, showing their experience and competitiveness in postseason play.

These four numbers will be crucial in determining the outcome of this highly anticipated women’s basketball matchup between Iowa and Washington.

  • WBB: Emily Ryan plans to practice Tuesday, could be available for Wednesday’s game – CycloneFanatic.com

AMES – Iowa State point guard Emily Ryan will practice on Tuesday after missing Saturday’s game – an 82-68 loss to now No. 16 West Virginia – with an illness.

Ryan, who’s in her fifth year and serves as the captain of the team, is an integral part of the Cyclone offense and plays a big role on the bench when she isn’t playing in games.

“She’s going to try and practice today,” Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said during his pregame press conference Tuesday. “She did not practice yesterday… and if she’s feels okay, will give it a shot (Wednesay).

Fennelly said that the illness had affected some members of the coaching staff and sidelined the point guard Saturday.

“The good news is that she’s going to give it a shot today and she feels a lot better, so we’re definitely trending in the right direction,” Fennelly said. “We’re definitely hopeful she will go tomorrow.”

Iowa State (13-7, 4-3) will take on BYU (10-7, 1-5) Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum and it can’t afford many more losses.

The Cyclones are currently listed in the ‘last four in’ category of ESPN’s bracketology. The squad has an integral stretch of 11 games coming up that will shape its resume, with four games against ranked opponents remaining.

That resume lacks a big win, and this team likely needs Ryan on the court to get that.

“Obviously, it kind of showed that we needed her her calming presence against West Virginia,” sophomore forward Addy Brown said. “We kind of got sped up pretty easily, and she definitely would have helped some of that. At the end of the day, you’ve got to look and kind of take in the perspective that she’s not going to be here next year, so we’ve got to get used to playing without her, which sucks, but that’s just how it goes.”

There’s optimism that Ryan will return soon, but with Iowa State’s next pair of games being at Hilton Coliseum against teams at the bottom of the Big 12 standings in BYU and UCF, look for a ‘pitch count’ as Fennelly would put it.

“I think having a point guard that’s played in this league for five years is huge, regardless of what they would produce,” junior guard Sydney Harris said. “But obviously, she does produce a lot for us. So, it was definitely hard without having her… but, I think she’ll be back shortly.”

Exciting news for Iowa State women’s basketball fans! According to CycloneFanatic.com, guard Emily Ryan is set to practice on Tuesday and may be available for Wednesday’s game. This is great news for the team as Ryan has been a key player this season. Stay tuned for updates on her status and potential return to the court. Go Cyclones!

  • No. 1 UCLA WBB Begins a Big Week Against Baylor

It is going to be a long week for the Bruins. The No. 1 UCLA women’s basketball team (17-0, 6-0) starts things out on Monday with a neutral site game against the Baylor Bears (16-3, 6-1) in the inaugural Coretta Scott King Classic at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey (12:00 p.m. PT, FOX). And that is just the start.

The Bruins then play another game in New Jersey on Thursday as they take on Rutgers, followed by a Sunday morning affair at No. 8 Maryland. Needless to say, head coach Cori Close and her squad have some challenges in front of them.

But one game at a time. The Bruins will partake in a rare non-conference game in the middle of conference play. UCLA and Baylor will be the first of two games in the King Classic, with the second being a contest between No. 7 Texas and Maryland.

This will be the 11th time the Bruins and Bears will face each other, with Baylor holding the 7-3 advantage. UCLA came away with the 82-68 victory in the last game, which took place on Nov. 18, 2017.

    (Photo: USA TODAY Sports)

This game could have a closer result. Despite Baylor not currently being ranked, the Bears are hanging just outside the Top 25 with eight votes in the most recent AP Poll, essentially putting them as 31st in the nation. They are also No. 24 in the NET Rankings. Essentially, it is not a bad team.

The Bears are currently 3rd in the Big XII standings hindered by their lone conference loss to Oklahoma State. The other season losses have come against Oregon and Indiana, a team UCLA recently beat by double digits. Baylor recently won against No. 23 Utah, which will look good on their tournament resume.

Currently, Baylor is 21st in the nation in scoring offense, as they are averaging 81.1 points per game. This is the culmination of five players averaging over ten points per game. The head of that class is guard/forward Darianna Littlepage-Buggs who is averaging a double-double with 14.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. She is tied for 22nd in the nation with 8 double-doubles. Littlepage-Buggs is also 9th in the Big XII in field goal percentage with 52.8%.

Center Aaronette Vonleh is the top Bear on the team in field goal percentage as she is making 61.2% of her shots. That is 6th in the Big XII and 10th in the nation. She is also averaging 14.2 points per game. Behind her in the scoring column is Jada Walker (11.7), Sarah Andrews (11.4), Yaya Felder (11.1), and Jana Van Gytenbeek (10.0).

That is pretty on par with what UCLA is doing this season as six players are averaging 9.0+ points this season.

Center Lauren Betts captured her 10th double-double of the season in the last game against Penn State at Long Beach State. Due to the recent fires in Los Angeles, the Bruins were forced to postpone one game and relocate another. Even with the distraction, UCLA was able to come away with a program record 17 wins to start the season. But back to Betts, she put up 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and nearly completed the the triple-double with 7 blocked shots.

As a team, UCLA is scoring 82.9 points per game, giving the Bruins the 13th best ranking in the country. That is due to the firepower they have behind Betts. Next on the stat column is point guard Kiki Rice with 12.8 points per game, followed by guard Gabriela Jaquez with 10.3, while forwards Timea Gardner, Janiah Barker, and Angela Duglaic are putting up 9.2, 9.2, and 9.1, respectively.

And let us not forget about the defensive efforts. Baylor is 45th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 57.6 points. Comparatively, UCLA only allows 53.5 points, 10th in the nation.

On paper, UCLA looks to be the team with the bigger upside, but not by much. Baylor is a very physical team that can match up with UCLA as several spots. The Bruins have been tested this season, but this is one of the tougher ones as Baylor is fighting to be a NCAA Tournament contender. Either way, UCLA has to be focused in this game and for the long term. Whatever happens against Baylor, there is still Rutgers and Maryland on the horizon. This will definitely be a defining week for the No.1 UCLA women’s basketball team.

  • Nebraska WBB Stalls Out Against #4 USC

Nebraska WBB Stalls Out Against #4 USC

This game started off looking very winnable and then a third quarter implosion from the Huskers happened and it was all Trojans from there. Turnovers and 21 personal fouls plagued Nebraska late in the game. It was one of the most undisciplined games I’ve seen in awhile.

Starters are Britt Prince, Callin Hake, Logan Nissley, Jessica Petrie, and Alexis Markowski.

    First Quarter

An offensive rebound gets Jessica Petrie and Nebraska on the board. Both teams are playing some good defense and also missing some shots. Petrie gets a steal and it leads to a Callin Hake layup (6-8 USC). Kendall Moriarty will head to the charity stripe after the media timeout with 4:50 left in the first.

Moriarty makes both free throws, tying the game at eight. Turnovers are ruining any possibility for Nebraska right now. USC is on an 8-0 run, Alberte Rimdal stops a scoring drought of almost three minutes (10-16 USC). Britt Prince is doing what Britt Prince does and that’s hit buzzer beaters. Prince’s shot goes down off a screen assist via Alexis Markowski (12-16 USC).

    Nebraska 12 USC 16

    Second Quarter

Logan Nissley gets called for a travel that was not a travel, quite literally never picked up her pivot foot. Nissley gets a steal and it ends up a Britt Prince jumper (14-16 USC). Petra Bozan has her first points of the game and then Logan Nissley HITS A THREE AND NEBRASKA HAS THE LEAD 19-18! Timeout USC with 7:32 left in the half.

USC hits a three to take the lead back, but after a couple empty possessions Nissley hits another three and retakes the lead 22-21. Logan Nissley is awarded free throws, makes both, she’s up to eight points. The freshman, Amiah Hargrove, has her layup drop and Nebraska is up by three (26-23). Prince puts Nebraska up 28-23 as her jumper goes through the net. Alexis Markowski, surprisingly, has just got her first points of the game. USC hits a three and will get the ball back because of a foul off ball and they tie it up (30-30). Nebraska timeout called after JuJu Watkins gives USC the lead. 1:55 left in the half.

Turnover Nebraska, USC hits a triple, but Jessica Petrie snipes the long range three (33-35 USC). Nebraska seemingly imploding right now with turnovers and fouls, but it feels worse than the score says as Nebraska is only down five. Nebraska had a chance to score at the end of the half, but it’s picked off and that’ll end the first half. The Huskers trail #4 USC by five.

    Nebraska 34 USC 39

    Halftime Stats

    Logan Nissley: 8 points

    Jessica Petrie: 8 points

Britt Prince: 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists

Nebraska is shooting 46.4 percent from the field, including 60.0 percent from three. Nebraska is leading the rebounding battle 18-16, but have twice as many turnovers (10-5).

    Third Quarter

An official went down early in the third, so know we are playing with two officials, Alexis gets her layup to go to bring Nebraska within three. Markowski answers a couple USC buckets with one of her own (38-45 USC). Nebraska is on a scoring drought of over two minutes, hitting only 1-9 shots. Nothing happening for Nebraska, we head to the media timeout with 4:29 left. Huskers are down 38-47.

Petra Bozan’s layup is good making it a seven point game. Alberte Rimdal has been quiet today, but she has her reverse layup fall (42-49 USC). Not a whole bunch has happened for either teams with 1:55 left in the quarter. Britt Prince gets sent to the free throw line and makes both of them, Nebraska is down 10 (44-54 USC). Nebraska is 2 of their last 10 shots and down 11. Kendall Coley gets tagged with a technical foul, USC gets free throws and the ball. Wheels are falling off the bus for Nebraska.

    Nebraska 45 USC 59

Nebraska has had some open opportunities for some points and have just missed everything, nothing falling and USC is running away with this game. The Huskers find themselves down 20 with six minutes left. Nebraska calls a timeout and Amy Williams is not happy, Nebraska has been playing very undisciplined the last few minutes (45-68 USC).

Nebraska is up to 18 turnovers today and are now down 48-71 after Logan Nissley hits a three. USC just continues to blow the door wide open, but Nebraska is helping them with the fouls and turnovers. Amiah hits both free throws (50-75 USC). Logan Nissley hits another three, but the damage has already been done.

    Nebraska 55 USC 75

    Postgame Stats

    Logan Nissley: 14 points

Britt Prince: 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists

    Jessica Petrie: 8 points

Alexis Markowski: 7 points, 9 rebounds 3 assists

Nebraska shot 34.5 percent from the floor, including 33.3 percent from three, the Huskers had 18 turnovers and only 14 assists. Both teams had 36 rebounds.

This game started off looking very winnable and then a third quarter implosion from the Huskers happened and it was all Trojans from there. Turnovers and 21 personal fouls plagued Nebraska late in the game. It was one of the most undisciplined games I’ve seen in awhile.

In a tough matchup against the #4 ranked USC Trojans, the Nebraska women’s basketball team struggled to find their offensive rhythm. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Huskers were unable to keep up with USC’s high-powered offense, ultimately falling short with a final score of 65-48.

Nebraska’s leading scorer, Sam Haiby, was held to just 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting, while the team as a whole shot just 32% from the field. USC’s defense proved to be too much for the Huskers to handle, as they forced 18 turnovers and held Nebraska to just 6 made three-pointers on the night.

While it was a tough loss for the Huskers, they showed resilience and fought until the final buzzer. Head coach Amy Williams praised her team’s effort and determination, but acknowledged that they will need to make some adjustments moving forward in order to compete with the top teams in the country.

Despite the setback, the Huskers remain optimistic and determined to bounce back in their next game. With a talented roster and a strong work ethic, Nebraska is poised to make a statement in the competitive world of women’s college basketball.

LeBron James, who turned 40, celebrated his birthday on Monday, a day that always attracts global attention from fans and players alike. One of the greatest basketball players of all time, James’ influence has inspired countless young athletes, including Robinson, who plays at the Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles as does James’ son, Bryce James.

Robinson’s admiration for King James runs deep and goes back to her formative years when the young guard was learning the ways of basketball.

In a past interview with the “Sloane Knows” YouTube channel, Robinson credited LeBron for shaping her approach to the game. When Sloane, the host of the show, asked the FIBA Under-17 World Cup gold medalist which NBA or WNBA player she would want to be like, Robinson replied:

“Now, as I grow, well, early on, I would say it was really a lot of LeBron,” emphasizing how much she admired his style and ability to dominate across all aspects of basketball.

Besides the NBA’s King, Bryce James’s schoolmate, Jerzy Robinson, admires this WNBA star

Jerzy Robinson, who led Team USA to a gold medal at the FIBA Under-17 World Cup and FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship, is ranked No. 3 in the Class of 2026 by ESPN in the 247Sports national ranking.

The 6-foot shooting guard takes inspiration from NBA legends like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant to hone her game. However, she also highly regards A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and tries to model her game after the WNBA star.

On the Sloane Knows’ YouTube channel, she said:

“On the girl’s side, I like A’ja Wilson. She has a great face-up game. She kind of learned how to extend past the 3-point line, so I love watching her.”

The Sierra Canyon standout has also secured a nomination for the USA Basketball 5-on-5 Female Athlete of the Year Award this year. The 16-year-old is competing with none other than the WNBA star she admires, two-time WNBA champion A’ja Wilson.
