  • No. 3 Notre Dame, Louisville Set For Sunday ESPN2 Matinee – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — No. 3 Notre Dame (18-2, 9-0) will play its third road contest in as many games on Sunday, closing out the swing away from Purcell Pavilion with ACC rival Louisville (15-6, 8-2). Notre Dame is seeking a 10-0 start in ACC play for the first time since the team went undefeated in conference play in 2015-16, and the last ACC team to do so was NC State in 2021-22 before Notre Dame beat the Wolfpack.

The Irish are coming off of a 77-61 victory at Virginia Tech on Thursday night. All-American Hannah Hidalgo dropped 30 points for the third time this season and eighth time in her career, passing Jewell Loyd for second all-time in 30-point games. She trails only Irish legend Arike Ogunbowale (11).

Against the Hokies, Liza Karlen had her best ACC game to date. She went 5-5 from the floor and knocked down two 3-pointers, finishing with 12 points and a win over her former head coach Megan Duffy, who is now in Blacksburg.

Turning to this weekend, the Irish and the Cardinals have become one of the nation’s top women’s basketball rivalries. Louisville has been a dangerous but hot and cold team this year.

Junior forward Nyla Harris has been Louisville’s most consistent shooter, leading the team with a 60.8 field goal percentage and a 64.9 mark in ACC play. Harris, Tajianna Roberts and Jayda Curry are all averaging double-figure points, and Roberts leads the group with 13.7. The freshman was the No. 25 recruit in the country in the 2024 class and played her high school basketball at IMG Academy in Florida.

Irish veterans Sonia Citron, Olivia Miles and Maddy Westbeld have had great success recently against Louisville, as Notre Dame has won four of the last six meetings. In eight career games against the Cardinals, Citron has averaged 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest. The last meeting came in the quarterfinals of last year’s ACC Tournament, and Citron had 26 points and 10 made free throws.

Notre Dame is 20-14 all-time against Louisville and 6-6 at their place. Sunday’s game starts at noon and will be on ESPN2. Ryan Ruocco, Rebecca Lobo and Holly Rowe will be on the call.

Get ready, Fighting Irish fans! No. 3 Notre Dame is set to take on Louisville in a Sunday matinee showdown, airing live on ESPN2.

The Fighting Irish have been on fire this season, boasting an impressive record and showing off their strong offensive and defensive skills. Led by their talented roster of players, Notre Dame is sure to put on a show for fans as they face off against Louisville.

With both teams hungry for a win, this game is sure to be intense and action-packed. So be sure to tune in to ESPN2 on Sunday to catch all the excitement as No. 3 Notre Dame takes on Louisville in what is sure to be a thrilling matchup. Go Fighting Irish!

  • USAID website goes offline amid Trump administration’s freeze on foreign aid

    Washington
    AP
     —

The website of the US Agency for International Development went offline without explanation Saturday as thousands of furloughs, layoffs and program shutdowns continued amid President Donald Trump’s freeze on US-funded foreign aid and development worldwide.

Congressional Democrats have battled the Trump administration increasingly openly, expressing concern that Trump may be headed toward ending USAID as an independent agency and absorbing it into the State Department. Democrats say Trump has no legal authority to eliminate a congressionally funded independent agency, and that the work of USAID is vital to national security.

Trump and congressional Republicans say much of foreign aid and development programs are wasteful. They single out programs they say advance liberal social agendas.

The fear of even tougher administration action against USAID comes two weeks into the administration’s shutdown of billions of dollars of the United States’ humanitarian, development and security assistance.

The US is the world’s largest donor of humanitarian aid by far. It spends less than 1% of its budget on foreign assistance, a smaller share overall than some other countries.

Administration officials had no comment Saturday when asked about concerns expressed by lawmakers and others that Trump may be planning to end USAID as an independent agency.

President John F. Kennedy created USAID at the height of the Cold War to counter Soviet influence. Congress passed the Foreign Assistance Act in 1961, and Kennedy signed that law and an executive order establishing USAID as an independent agency. USAID today is at the center of US challenges to the growing influence of China, which has a successful “Belt and Road” foreign aid program of its own.

USAID staffers spent Friday and Saturday in group chats monitoring the fate of their agency, giving updates on whether the USAID flag and signs were still up outside headquarters in Washington. As of late Saturday afternoon, they were.

In a Friday post on X, Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut said presidents cannot eliminate congressionally appropriated federal agencies by executive order, and said Trump was poised to “double down on a constitutional crisis.”

“That’s what a despot — who wants to steal the taxpayers’ money to enrich his billionaire cabal — does,” Murphy said.

Billionaire Elon Musk, advising Trump in a campaign to whittle down the federal government in the name of efficiency, endorsed posts on his X site calling for dissolving USAID.

“Live by executive order, die by executive order,” Musk posted Saturday in reference to USAID.

Trump placed an unprecedented 90-day freeze on foreign assistance on his first day in office January 20. Days later, the State Department froze nearly all foreign assistance worldwide, shutting down thousands of programs around the world and forcing the furloughs or layoffs of many thousands.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has since moved to keep more kinds of strictly life-saving emergency programs going during the freeze. Aid groups say confusion surrounding what programs are still allowed to operate is contributing to paralysis in global aid organizations.

Rubio said Thursday, in his first public comments on the matter, that USAID’s programs were being reviewed to eliminate any that are not in the national interest, but he said nothing about eliminating USAID as an agency.

The shutdown of US-funded programs during the 90-day review meant the US was “getting a lot more cooperation” from recipients of humanitarian, development and security assistance, Rubio said.

Republicans and Democrats have fought over the agency for years, arguing whether humanitarian and development aid protects the US by helping stabilize partner countries and economies, or whether it is a waste of money. Republicans typically push to give the State Department more control of USAID’s policy and funds, while Democrats typically build USAID autonomy and authority.

A version of that legal battle played out in Trump’s first term, when the president tried to cut the budget for foreign operations by a third.

When Congress refused, the Trump administration used freezes and other tactics to cut the flow of funds already appropriated by Congress for foreign programs. The General Accounting Office later ruled that it violated a law known as the Impoundment Control Act.

The USAID website has mysteriously gone offline amidst the Trump administration’s freeze on foreign aid. This unprecedented move has raised concerns among experts and advocates who rely on the website for critical information and updates on global aid programs.

The website, which serves as a hub for USAID’s efforts to provide assistance to developing countries, has been inaccessible for several days now. This outage comes at a time when the Trump administration is facing scrutiny for its controversial decision to freeze billions of dollars in foreign aid.

Many are questioning whether the website’s disappearance is a deliberate attempt to suppress information about USAID’s work and the impact of the administration’s foreign aid policies. Critics argue that this move could hinder transparency and accountability in the distribution of aid funds.

In response to the outage, USAID officials have stated that they are working to resolve the issue and restore the website as soon as possible. However, the timing of this incident has only fueled suspicions about the administration’s motives.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this outage will impact the flow of information and resources to those in need around the world. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • USAid website offline as Trump moves to put agency under state department | Trump administration

The website for the US Agency for International Development, or USAid, appeared to be offline on Saturday, as the Trump administration moves to put the free-standing agency, and its current $42.8bn budget for global humanitarian operations, under state department control.

A message stating that the “server IP address could not be found” appeared when attempts were made to access the website on Saturday.

Two sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters on Friday that the Trump administration was moving to strip USAid of its independence as a government agency and put it under state department control.

The apparent failure of the website comes after plaques embossed with the agency’s official seal were removed on Friday, according to Reuters, a sign that the merger into the state department was in the works.

The move comes as the Trump administration has vowed to overhaul the distribution of foreign aid, saying last week it was freezing foreign aid while conducting a review to ensure that assistance worldwide is aligned with Trump’s “America First” foreign policies.

Current and former USAid officials said this week that a purge of senior staff appeared designed to silence any dissent and that bringing the agency under the state department would be a “seismic shift”.

“This moves the United States government to a place where the humanitarian voice will not be in high-level policy discussions,” the official said.

In an opinion column in the Wall Street Journal, the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio – who would assume oversight over USAid if it were or had been placed under the state department – outlined a new US diplomatic focus on the western hemisphere.

Rubio said he would make his first trip as the nation’s most senior diplomat to El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

“These nations were neglected by past administrations that prioritized the global over the local and pursued policies that accelerated China’s economic development, often at our neighbors’ expense,” Rubio wrote.

Reuters reported that the White House was exploring legal authority that Trump could use to issue an executive order to end USAid’s independence and that he could sign such a directive as soon as Friday night or Saturday.

“Watch USAID tonight,” Chris Murphy, a Democratic senator and member of the Senate foreign relations committee, said in a post on X on Friday evening.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, citing a “rumor” that Trump planned to dissolve USAid as an independent agency, said in an X post that such a move would be “illegal and against our national interests”.

But it is unclear whether the president has the legal authority to bypass Congress and order USAid’s merger into the state department.

    skip past newsletter promotion

If placed under the state department, USAid could become a more explicit armature of foreign policy goals than it has been as the world’s largest single donor of life-saving humanitarian operations.

USAid has in the past been able to assist countries with whom the United States has no diplomatic relations, including Iran. A source at the agency told Reuters that the non-alignment with the US diplomatic mission had helped build bridges that might not have come to be under purely political objectives.

Perhaps signaling the new administration’s plan to fold the agency under the state department, Trump has not nominated a person to run USAid.

The costs of a freeze on US foreign aid grants is already being felt. Field hospitals in Thai refugee camps, landmine clearance in war zones, and drugs to treat millions suffering from diseases such as HIV are among the programs facing defunding.

In fiscal year 2023, the United States disbursed $72bn of assistance worldwide on everything from women’s health in conflict zones to access to clean water, HIV/Aids treatments, energy security and anti-corruption work. It provided 42% of all humanitarian aid tracked by the United Nations in 2024.

Following Trump’s executive order last week, the state department issued worldwide stop-work directives, effectively freezing all foreign aid with the exception of emergency food assistance in a move that experts warned risked killing people.

Rubio earlier this week issued an additional waiver for “life-saving humanitarian assistance” while Washington undertakes the 90-day review.

As the Trump administration continues to make changes to the structure of government agencies, the USAid website has gone offline as President Trump moves to put the agency under the State Department. This decision has raised concerns about the future of USAid’s independence and effectiveness in providing aid to countries in need.

Many are questioning the motives behind this move and what it means for the future of USAid’s work. Critics worry that placing USAid under the State Department could politicize the agency’s humanitarian efforts and diminish its impact on the ground.

As the website remains offline, many are left wondering about the fate of USAid and how this decision will ultimately impact those who rely on its assistance. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • 21. Welcome To Miami – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Don’t look now but the Fighting Irish (10-10, 4-5) are back to .500 on the season after winning three of its last four games, and with a win against Miami on Saturday, they can climb back to .500 in league play. Notre Dame’s current 4-5 league record puts them in ninth place heading into the weekend.

A victory on Saturday would also give the Irish their first back-to-back ACC road wins since the 2021-22 season. It would also mark Micah Shrewsberry’s first win against the Hurricanes as head coach.

It was around this time last year in which the Irish started to play their best basketball, rattling off five wins in six games in February of 2024. Coach Shrews says this season has been disjointed – learning to play without Burton, then inserting him back in 39 days later. The team is now settling in and looking to play their best basketball with three wins in a row.

The task at hand is a Florida road swing starting with Miami on Saturday, Feb. 1. That match will tip off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

The Irish trail the overall series against the Hurricanes, 13-17, with a 6-8 mark inside the Watsco Center. ND and Miami played twice last season: a 49-62 loss in Coral Gables and a 61-73 loss in South Bend. The Irish player who averaged the most points in those two contests is J.R. Konieczny at 13.5 ppg.

    BURTON EMPHATICALLY BACK

After 39 days away rehabbing his knee injury, Burton has returned bigger and better than ever. The sophomore has fired off five consecutive games with 20 or more points, which hasn’t been done by an Irish player since Ben Hansbrough in February of 2011. Now before you ask, the last ND player with a longer streak was Luke Harangody with 14 straight in 2008-09.

Burton averaged a red-hot 22.3 ppg in January, which ranked second in the ACC only to Duke’s Cooper Flagg (25.4). That average ranked fourth amongst all power conference players.

The sophomore has recorded incredible stretches during this five-game stint and we’ll start with the most recent.

He poured in 18 of his 26 points in the second half against Georgia Tech, including back-to-back triples with less than 2:30 on the clock.

He scored the first nine points at Virginia before finishing with a team best 21. Prior, Burton dropped a first-half career high 22 points at Syracuse, finishing with 28.

    CHASING ACHIEVEMENTS

Burton is currently averaging 20.4 ppg despite the two-point early-injury exit tarnishing that average. He’s also averaging a team best 3.3 apg.

If Burton can keep this up, he’ll join David Rivers as the only Irish players to average 20+ points and 3+ assists in a season. He would be just the 15th ACC player since 1996.

However, Burton isn’t the only one who can cement his name in the Irish record books this season. Grad transfer Matt Allocco owns a 3.69 assist-to-turnover ratio – the highest in program history for a season was 3.16 by Martin Inglesby back in 2000-01.

Allocco is also converting a career high 48.6 percent from deep. That number currently ranks second all-time for a season. The top spot belongs to Joe Fredrick who shot 52.1 percent in 1988-89.

    THREE BALL HEATING UP

The Irish have great guard play and it’s showing with how well the three ball is goind down. In ACC play, Notre Dame is converting 41.3 percent from beyond the arc, which leads all league schools.

Overall on the year, the Irish have drained 37.9 percent from deep which ranks 25th in the country.

The Irish have connected on double-digit treys three times now over the past five games. They sunk 14 at Duke (which tied their season high), 12 in the win at Virginia and 10 in the win over Georgia Tech.

Allocco, Shrewsberry and Burton have been leading the three barrage, but Burton specifically has stepped up his game. He went from 30.0 percent from three-point range last year to 43.3 percent this season. He’s tied his career high of four made triples three times over the last five games. He’s 8-for-11 over the last two games.

    THE TAE-KOVER

Tae Davis has emerged as one of the top talents in the ACC and should be a candidate for Most Improved. He’s averaging a career best 15.8 ppg, up from last year’s 9.2 ppg. His scoring average ranks 10th amongst ACC players. The Indy native is also shooting a career best 48.9 percent, which ranks 7th in the league.

Where is he getting it done? Well, the junior has been highly proficient around the rim where he’s 71-of-107 (.664).

He’s also improved from the free-throw line over the course of the season. He’s 24 for his last 29, raising his FT% to a career best 77.0 percent. Tae ranks fourth in the league in FT attempts and eighth in makes.

    EVOLVING

When Burton was recovering, other Irish had to step up and evolve. We’ve already mentioned Tae Davis’ emergence but we’ve also seen Braeden Shrewsberry’s evolution.

The sophomore guard is averaging 14.8 ppg, up from last year’s 10.2. He’s shooting 43.6 percent, which is up from last year’s 39.8.

He’s connecting on 2.8 threes per game this season, with a .367 clip from beyond the arc. Shrewsberry’s sweet spot has been the corner three where he’s 14-31 (.452), which is 9.7 percent above the D1 average.

Shrewsberry boasts higher three ball numbers in ACC play where he ranks third in threes/game at 3.0 and third in three-point percentage at 41.5.

However, it’s important to point out that he’s added to his overall arsenal with a dangerous floater that keeps defenders guessing. He’s shooting 50.0 percent from midrange twos.

He’s 54.8 percent overall from two-point range and converting 60.0 percent over the last five games.

    VET LEADER

When Coach Shrews added grad transfer Matt Allocco to the roster he got two things – a talented guard with NCAA Tournament experience and a leader by every definition of the word. Coach Shrews hoped that his young core of players would pick up those characteristics and then be leaders to the next group coming in.

This season, Allocco is averaging 9.8 ppg on 47.1 percent shooting. He’s draining a career best 48.6 percent from three. As previously mentioned, Allocco is also on pace for the highest A/TO ratio in program history at 3.69.

Allocco also leads the team in defensive rebounds per game at 4.2 and leads in +/- at +91 on the year.

    NOTRE NOTABLES

    • With 13 points in the win over BC on Jan. 13, Matt Allocco officially crossed over the 1,000 career point milestone. He currently sits at 1,027.
    • Allocco boasts a true shooting percentage of 68.8 over the last five games. According to CBB Analytics that ranks in the 99th percentile.
    • Kebba entered the year with just four double-digit scoring performances to his name. He’s posted two in the month of January, including his first career double-double at NC State.
    • Speaking of Kebba, the junior is averaging 2.8 offensive rebounds/game in ACC play, which ranks fourth in the league.
    • Burton is averaging 2.4 made threes per game in ACC play which ranks sixth.
    • Yes Sir! – The freshman guard impressed at #4 Duke, recording his first double-digit scoring performance with 11 points on 4-7 shooting, plus 2-4 from three.
    • Notre Dame continues to raise its KenPom Offense Adj. Efficiency. Over the last several games, it has risen from 56th to 38th with a rating of 116.5. Notre Dame’s overall KenPom rating sits at No. 80.

  • No. 3 Notre Dame Continues Road Swing With Trip To Blacksburg – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

BLACKSBURG, Va. — After a win at Boston College last Thursday and the weekend off, No. 3 Notre Dame (17-2, 8-0) heads to Virginia Tech (14-6, 5-4) for the second of three straight away games.

The Irish most recently stifled a hot Eagles offense, defeating BC 89-63 and holding them to a 1-17 showing from the floor to close out the game. Hannah Hidalgo paced Notre Dame with 23 points, while Sonia Citron stuffed the stat sheet once again with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block. She led the team in both boards and dimes.

Notre Dame’s “pick your poison” mantra is alive and well through eight ACC games. There are five players in the conference posting at least 15 points, 6 rebounds and a pair of assists per game in ACC play. Three of them play for the Irish (Citron, Hidalgo and Olivia Miles). The other two are Miami’s Haley Cavinder and Stanford’s Nunu Agara.

In total, Notre Dame has a player ranked in the top 10 nationally in four of the five major statistical categories — Hidalgo (points and steals), Miles (assists) and Kate Koval (blocks). As a team, the Irish lead the ACC in rebounds, assists, blocks and steals per game plus field goal percentage, scoring margin and rebounding margin. The Irish offense is posting 87.5 points per game, which ranks second in the conference and fifth nationally. The group also leads the country with a 41.2 success rate from beyond the arc.

The Hokies are led by first year coach and Notre Dame alum Megan Duffy, who played in South Bend from 2002-06. Virginia Tech is coming off an 85-57 loss to No. 20 NC State but brings a balanced offense and young core to the court. Carleigh Wenzel is the team’s leading scorer (14.3 ppg), but four players are averaging 10+ points per contest. Wenzel led the Hokies with 18 points in Raleigh on Sunday. Forward Rose Michaeux is posting a near double-double with 12.4 points and 8.5 boards per game.

Notre Dame is 17-2 all-time against Virginia Tech and has won the last five meetings, including a top-10 clash in December 2022, the last time the Irish visited Cassell Coliseum. Thursday’s game airs on ACCNX and tips off at 6 p.m.

The No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish are hitting the road once again as they travel to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech in their next game. After a thrilling victory in their last matchup, Notre Dame is looking to continue their winning streak and solidify their spot near the top of the rankings.

This road swing will test the Fighting Irish as they face a tough Virginia Tech team on their home turf. The Hokies are always a formidable opponent, especially in front of their passionate fans. Notre Dame will need to bring their A-game in order to come out on top in this matchup.

With a talented roster and a strong coaching staff, the Fighting Irish have the tools to come away with a victory in Blacksburg. Fans can expect an exciting and competitive game as Notre Dame looks to extend their winning streak and make a statement in the college football world.

Be sure to tune in and cheer on the Fighting Irish as they continue their road swing and strive for another impressive victory. Let’s go Irish! #GoIrish

  • Mississippi State – Official Athletics Website

    by Matt Dunaway, Director/Communications

STARKVILLE – Another top 15 matchup is on the horizon for No. 14 Mississippi State when No. 4 Alabama makes its yearly visit to Humphrey Coliseum on Wednesday evening.

State (16-4, 4-3 SEC) has won 16 of its first 20 games for the 10th time in program history and for the first time since 2011-12. The Bulldogs are one of five SEC squads (Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M) and are one of 13 teams nationally with at least 8 combined NCAA NET Quad 1 and 2 victories on the season.

State is joined by Memphis and Tennessee as the only teams in the nation to collect a pair of true non-conference road wins over NCAA NET Quad 1 foes.

State is one of seven programs (Alabama, Auburn, Marquette, Memphis, Oregon, Texas A&M) in the country to amass at least five non-conference victories. Only the Bulldogs, Auburn and Oregon have amassed a 5-1 record or better against NCAA NET Quad 1 and Quad 2 non-conference opponents.

Earlier this week, State remained at No. 14 in this week’s Associated Press and advanced to No. 13 in the USA Today Top 25 rankings. The No. 14 ranking matches a program watermark in the AP poll under Coach Jans reached multiple times earlier this season.

With their victories over No. 18 Pitt (80-57), No. 21 Memphis (79-66) and No. 21 Ole Miss (84-81), the Bulldogs have won three games over AP Top 25 foes for the first time in program history before the month of February.

Respectively, the Pitt and Memphis triumphs are State’s largest home and largest road wins over AP Top 25 opponents in program history. The Bulldogs also posted a 35-point win over South Carolina which was the program’s second-largest margin of victory for a SEC opener.

In total, the Maroon and White have captured eight victories over AP Top 25 opponents under Coach Jans. The eight wins are already the most ranked victories for a State coach during his first three seasons in Starkville.

Coach Jans’ eight victories over AP Top 25 foes trail only Missouri’s Dennis Gates and are tied with Alabama’s Nate Oats for current coaches at their SEC respective schools during their first three inside the league.

State has secured back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances fueled by a pair of 21-win campaigns with Coach Jans at the helm. The last time the Bulldogs collected back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids was during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons under Rick Stansbury.

State will look to secure three straight NCAA Tournament trips for the third time in program history this season. The last time the Maroon and White accomplished the feat was in 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05 under Stansbury.

The Bulldogs have piled up 80.7 points per game which is the fifth-highest mark in program history and most since 1990-91 through 20 games. The Maroon and White also canned 171 three-pointers is the third-best mark and 192 steals which is good enough for fourth place in program history through 20 games.

After selling out seven contests and boasting the program’s fifth highest attendance average for season in 2023-24, Humphrey Coliseum has averaged 8,538 fans which is the program’s highest mark through the team’s first nine games dating back to the 2007-08 season.

Fans can purchase single game tickets for the program’s remaining home games through Mississippi State’s Athletic Ticket Office at www.HailState.com/tickets or by calling (662) 325-2600 / (888) 463-2947 (GO DAWGS).

    SERIES HISTORY
Alabama has won the last six and nine of the last 10 in the series going back to 2020-21 and holds an all-time series edge of 135-78. The Crimson Tide have been ranked in all but one of those meetings highlighted by a top 10 mark on six occasions.

State’s last win in the series was a 78-76 decision over No. 24 Alabama on 01/15/2022. Iverson Molinar led the way with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals for the Bulldogs.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT STATE
    1. Chris Jans, one of the nation’s premier bench bosses, leads the State program. He is assisted by George Brooks, David Anwar, Patrice Days, Scott Padgett and Dillon Elder.

Jans, a three-time WAC Coach of the Year during his tenure at New Mexico State, owns an impressive .728 winning percentage (201-75) in his 9th season as a NCAA Division I head coach. He earned his 200th career victory against Ole Miss (01/18), and his 58 wins are the most for a State coach over his first three seasons.

Jans is tied for fifth among NCAA active coaches with the aforementioned .728 winning percentage with Darian DeVries (West Virginia). He sits behind only Mark Few (Gonzaga), Bill Self (Kansas), John Calipari (Arkansas) and Brian Dutcher (San Diego State).

In his three seasons at State, Jans has amassed 58 victories, which holds a share of the top spot with Florida’s Todd Golden among the six, SEC third-year coaches. He is the only active coach at his respective SEC school to post a pair of 20-plus win seasons in his first two seasons inside the league with Calipari in his first season at Arkansas and Eric Musselman now coaching at Southern Cal.

Jans is looking to remain in the elite company of Calipari (Kentucky – 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12), Bruce Pearl (Tennessee – 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08) and Tubby Smith (Kentucky – 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000) as the only four coaches in SEC history to take their squads to three straight NCAA Tournaments with at least 21 wins in their first three seasons inside the league.

Nationally, Jans is joined by Jon Scheyer (Duke) and Rodney Terry (Texas) as the only third-year coaches in the nation to take their squads to the 2023 and 2024 NCAA Tournaments, respectively.

Jans is the last coach to defeat two-time defending national champion UConn led by Dan Hurley at the 2022 NCAA Tournament while at New Mexico State and was the last coach to defeat the Huskies on a neutral court, a span of 984 days, until Memphis defeated UConn at the 2024 Maui Invitational.

As a junior college head coach, Jans won the 1997-98 NJCAA Division II National Championship at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jans played a vital role as an assistant coach at Wichita State which was headed by a 2013 NCAA Final Four run, five NCAA Tournament trips and four Missouri Valley Conference regular season crowns before he won the 2015 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year during his first season as a NCAA Division I head coach at Bowling Green.

Jans ushered in an unprecedented run of success over a five-year span at New Mexico State where he guided the Aggies to a 122-32 record sparked by three NCAA Tournament trips. The program was in-line for a 4th NCAA Tournament appearance before the 2019-20 postseason was cancelled.

    2. State’s returning group is fueled by Josh Hubbard, Shawn Jones Jr., Cameron Matthews and KeShawn Murphy.

Hubbard, a John R. Wooden Award Midseason Watch List recipient along with a Bob Cousy Award and Lute Olson Award Preseason Watch List member, registered 17.1 points per game which was tops among SEC freshmen last season.

Hubbard’s 923 points is second-most among State freshmen and sophomores trailing only Jamont Gordon who piled up 974 points over 65 games during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. The 923 points also are 7th in program history through 55 career games. He enters the Alabama game 77 points shy of becoming the 45th player at State to reach 1,000 for his career.

Hubbard has racked up double figures in 49 of 55 outings fueled by 19 efforts of 20+ points. He has sunk multiple triples in 46 of 55 career games and has hit at least one three-pointer in 33 consecutive games which is the second-longest streak in State history. In total, he has already buried 167 treys which is already 9th on the program’s all-time list.

Hubbard picked up where he left off from a season ago and has poured in 16.3 points per game this season which is 10th among the SEC leaders. He fired in 20 of his 23 points after halftime versus Utah (11/17) and amassed a season-high 26 points fueled by six three-pointers against West Georgia (11/04) during the 2024-25 season opener.

Over his last 29 outings, Hubbard has dialed up 18.7 points per game sparked by 97 triples. He has led the team in scoring during 21 of his 36 career starts since the Auburn game on 01/28/2024.

The Madison native’s top SEC scoring efforts are 34 points versus No. 16 Kentucky (02/27/2024), 32 points at LSU (02/24/2024) and 28 points versus No. 17 South Carolina (03/09/2024). His best non-con scoring effort was 29 points against Northwestern (11/19/2023).

Hubbard, an ESPN top 100 recruit for the Class of 2023, capped his high school career as the state of Mississippi’s all-time leading scorer with 4,367 career points. He broke a state record that stood for 37 years previously held by Mississippi State’s Robert Woodard.

Jones Jr. has made 66 of his 79 appearances off the bench over his three seasons with the Bulldogs. He posted a career-high tying 11 points versus Prairie View A&M (12/08), while his SEC career-best is 11 points against South Carolina (02/28/2023).

Matthews is one of college basketball’s most versatile players and is the only active NCAA player with at least 900 points, 750 rebounds, 300 assists and 225 steals. He is one of five SEC players and one of 22 players among the Power 5 hoops conferences (ACC, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC) to play their fifth season at the same school in 2024-25.

During his three seasons under Coach Jans, Matthews has dialed up an impressive +664 plus/minus cumulative mark when on the floor. He has been a positive plus/minus performer in 67 of 89 games, racked up 35 outings with at least +10 mark and secured at least a +20 rating on 13 occasions. The Bulldogs are 23-9 lifetime when Matthews collects 10 or more points.

Matthews dialed up consecutive double-doubles in SEC play this season. He fired in a career-best tying 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added six steals versus No. 6 Kentucky (01/11). He also stuffed the stats sheet with 10 points, 11 rebounds and four steals against Ole Miss (01/18).

Matthews has posted 244 career steals which are 1st on State’s all-time list and is 3rd among NCAA active Power 5 players (ACC, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Big 12 SEC). The Olive Branch native set the State all-time mark during the McNeese game (12/14).

The All-SEC Defensive nod for Matthews in 2023-24 enabled him to become the fourth player in program history to etch his name to the record book. His company includes Abdul Ado (2020-21), Greg Carter (1990-91) and Jarvis Varnado (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10).

Murphy has played in 60 career games and made all three of his career starts in 2024-25. He has improved his points and rebounds per game averages during each of his three seasons culminating with 10.4 points and 7.2 rebounds this season.

The Alabama native has pumped home seven of his top eight scoring efforts in 2024-25 ignited by a career-high 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting against No. 18 Pitt (12/04). He dialed up his first career double-double with 18 points and a career-best 14 rebounds versus Utah (11/17).

Murphy has been a stats sheet stuffer with 11 outings of multiple assists and seven games of multiple blocks followed by five games of multiple steals this season. His 7.2 rebounds per contest are 10th sparked by a 5.2 clip on the defensive end which also is 7th in the SEC rankings.

An ESPN top 100 recruit for the Class of 2021, Murphy secured a SEC career-best of 18 points and added 11 rebounds against Ole Miss (01/18). State has won 14 of 16 games over the last three seasons when he scores double-digit points and all three outings with a double-double in 2024-25.

    3. State has received 37.3 points per game from its transfer class of Claudell Harris Jr. (Boston College), Riley Kugel (Florida), RJ Melendez (Georgia) and Michael Nwoko (Miami • Florida)

Harris Jr. has piled up 1,532 career points over his three stops at State, Charleston Southern and Boston College. He was named 2021-22 All-Big South Freshman Team and 2022-23 All-Big South Second Team during his first two seasons with Charleston Southern.

Harris Jr. made an instant impact with 20 points fueled by six trifectas in State’s opening night win over West Georgia (11/04) and tacked on a season’s best 21 points versus Prairie View A&M (12/08) during the non-conference. He is the only State player since at least 1988-89 to fire in 20 points off the bench during a season opener.

Overall, Harris Jr. has racked up 83 outings in double figures fueled by 19 performances of 20+ points. His teams are a combined 14-5 when he piles up 20-plus points.

Harris Jr. has ripped off double figures six of his last eight outings and 12 times at State which is second on the team. The Bulldogs are 10-2 when he reaches double figures. He dropped in a SEC-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting versus South Carolina (01/04) during the SEC opener.

Harris Jr.’s career-high is 34 points against High Point (01/11/2023) at Charleston Southern followed by 2023-24 season’s best of 29 points versus Lehigh (12/21/2023) during his time at Boston College.

Kugel, an ESPN top 75 recruit for the Class of 2022, has made it a full circle moment after he originally committed to the Maroon and White in November 2021. He captured 2022-23 All-SEC Freshman-Team honors and has totaled 821 points over 84 games between State and Florida.

Kugel has managed 39 games in double figures headed by 11 outings of 20-plus points. His career watermark is 25 points against No. 13 Baylor (11/24/2023), while he posted a SEC career-high of 24 points against Kentucky (02/22/2023) with the Gators.

Kugel has dialed up double figures in six of his last eight games and on 10 occasions with State. The Bulldogs are 8-2 in those outings. He has fired in 13.6 points per game over his last eight appearances and ripped off a SEC season-high 21 points versus No. 21 Ole Miss (01/04) which included the go-ahead three-pointer in the closing minutes of overtime.

Kugel was on his way to another strong effort with eight points in eight minutes versus No. 6 Kentucky (01/11) before he left the game with multiple injuries. He provided season’s best of 22 points against Butler (11/29) and Bethune-Cookman (12/30) during the non-conference.

Kugel and Murphy have combined for 18 outings of 10-plus points off the bench which is tied for the top among SEC duos with Chaney Johnson/Tahaad Pettiford (Auburn) along with Aden Holloway/Darrion Reid this season.

Like Kugel, Melendez is no stranger to the SEC after he spent last season at Georgia where the Bulldogs made a run to the 2024 NIT Final Four. He opened his collegiate career with back-to-back NCAA Tournament trips at Illinois.

Melendez, an ESPN top 75 recruit for the Class of 2021, has played in 110 games and improved his scoring average during each of his first four seasons sparked by 9.6 points per game at Georgia. His career-high is 35 points aided by six treys at Florida (01/27/2024).

Melendez has tallied 806 career points coupled with 39 career outings with 10-plus points. His teams are a combined 25-14 when he provides double figures.

Melendez has dialed up 12.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game over his last six outings headed by a season’s best 19 points and seven rebounds at Vanderbilt (01/07). The Puerto Rico native has rattled home double-digit points in five of his last six outings.

Nwoko made 49 appearances at State and Miami where two of his top five scoring efforts came against top 15 opponents last season. He tallied eight points and seven rebounds against No. 8 Duke (02/21/2024) coupled with eight points and six rebounds at No. 12 Kentucky (11/28/2023) with the Hurricanes.

Nwoko has six performances of 10+ points on the season. His first career double-double with career-bests of 18 points and 11 rebounds versus No. 18 Pitt (12/04). The Canada native tacked on his second double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Prairie View A&M (12/08).

Nwoko has secured seven of his top eight scoring efforts with State this season and tallied a conference career-best 11 points at South Carolina (01/25). He has provided 10 of his 15 outings with 5+ rebounds and all five of his performances with multiple blocks this season.

Nwoko has international experience representing Team Canada at the 2022 FIBA U18 Americas Championship and the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup.

Kanye Clary has played in 62 games where he garnered 545 career points between Mississippi State and Penn State. He amassed 16.7 points per game last season which ranked eight on the Big Ten leaderboard with the Nittany Lions. Clary has missed State’s last 13 games due to a leg injury (12/04-01/25).

Jeremy Foumena has seen action in 36 games off the bench during his time at Mississippi State and Rhode Island after a redshirt season with the Rams in 2022-23. His career-high is 16 points versus Wagner (11/14/2023).

    4. State’s roster features freshmen EJ Paymon and Dellquan Warren along with Gai Chol and Adrian Myers who will look to build on their freshman campaigns.

Warren, an ESPN top 100 recruit for the Class of 2024, played his final prep season at Our Savior Lutheran in New York which is the same prep program as Dashawn Davis who was on State’s roster the last two seasons.

Warren has chipped in multiple assists in five of his appearances in addition to multiple steals on three occasions over his 12 outings off the bench. He came away with two points, three rebounds and three assists against South Carolina (01/04) during the SEC opener.

Chol has made 28 appearances, all coming off the bench, during his first two seasons in Maroon and White. The native of South Sudan started playing basketball around age 10 by attending camps in his home country hosted by NBA player Luol Deng. His career-highs are 11 points and six rebounds versus UT Martin (11/11/2023).

As announced by Coach Jans before the season opener, Myers and Paymon are expected to redshirt the 2024-25 season.

    5. As a program, State has earned six straight postseason appearances when postseason tournament has been played (3 NCAA • 3 NIT) and 16 postseason appearances (9 NCAA • 7 NIT) during the 2000s.

The Bulldogs have already signed a trio of ESPN top 100 recruits for the Class of 2025 which include King Grace (No. 69), Tee Bartlett (No. 88) and Jamarion Davis-Fleming (No. 90). The only other time that State has signed three freshmen inside ESPN’s top 100 recruits was in 2015-16.

One: Turn the power play power back on

There was a stark contrast Monday night to the energy shown by the Kraken at 5-on-5 as opposed to on the power play. They went 0-for-4 with the man advantage, which quickly became a disadvantage that killed off their momentum and helped swing the game in the middle period.

The power play has now slipped to 25th of 32 teams at just 18.3% efficiency compared to 16th best at 20.7% last season.

Kraken coach Dan Bylsma chalked Monday’s power play woes up to a lack of “execution and urgency” – which is often code for a lack of focus. The Kraken seemed unaware they’d been handed a golden opportunity on power plays right after making it 1-0 and then – especially – when given a 5-on-3 advantage after taking a 2-1 lead.

Particularly concerning was Bylsma mentioning players not having any power play urgency “stepping over the boards and going with speed, executing.”

There isn’t much to explain that lack of situational awareness. It’s not as if they’ve beaten the Oilers in any of their last eight meetings, nor are they gift-wrapped 5-on-3 opportunities on a weekly basis.

Whatever the problem, it’s time to end it because it’s almost February. Sure, guys are tired but there’s a nice winter break fewer than two weeks away and now is not the time to be losing focus at key moments while trying to overcome a formidable gap with the final playoff-positioned teams.

Two: Get a quality start in goal

Unless there’s a dramatic shift in Kraken strategy these next 24 hours, the team typically alternates goalie assignments between both Joey Daccord and Philipp Grubauer when it has back-to-back games on the schedule. As Daccord went on Monday, it should, therefore, be Grubauer’s turn on Tuesday.

His last outing 16 days ago in Detroit didn’t go so well. Grubauer got boat-rushed for three goals on the first four shots and hasn’t played since. The outing before that, he yielded five goals on 19 shots in Columbus.

Daccord can’t play every single game the rest of the way. He didn’t look particularly sharp on Edmonton’s first goal of Monday night’s game, and his poke-check effort on Corey Perry’s go-ahead breakaway marker midway through also wasn’t the greatest look.

Tempting as it may be for the Kraken to keep riding Daccord, they need to be able to play Grubauer occasionally – especially in back-to-back scheduled games. Right now, they’ll need him to stop pucks: Especially early on so they don’t get buried and demoralized as happened against the Red Wings.

    Three: Know Your Foe

These aren’t your father’s Anaheim Ducks anymore. Oh wait, those guys actually won a Stanley Cup in 2007. Let’s try again: These aren’t your older brother’s terrible Ducks from a season or two ago.

Right now, in fact, the Ducks are nipping – OK, quacking — at the Kraken in the standings and are no longer the guaranteed pushovers they used to be. Sure, the Kraken didn’t always capitalize on the “pushover” part, but that’s another story. Unlike those prior Anaheim teams, which allowed for a rink-sized margin for error most nights, this current edition will beat you if you mess around too much.

They’re still terrible offensively, averaging a league-worst 2.47 goals per game, which is nearly a half-goal worse than the Kraken. Troy Terry leads the team with 15 goals and 38 points, while Mason McTavish has a pair of consecutive two-goal outings going for him coming into this one.

The difference maker has been in goal prevention, where the Ducks are 19th in the NHL at 3.08 allowed per contest. To put that into better context, they were third worst last season at 3.57 given up per game.

A huge reason is goalie Lukas Dostal, who’s boasted a decent 12-13-4 mark for a losing team while managing a .910 save percentage. But where Dostal really stands out is in the more advanced goals saved above expected statistic, where MoneyPuck says he’s No. 3 in the league behind Connor Hellebuyck of Winnipeg and Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers – preventing 17.0 goals based on shot quality.

Kraken netminder Daccord is No. 5 in that category at 16.2 such goals prevented. So, that gives you an idea of what the Kraken are up against. Effectively, they’ll face a slightly better version of Daccord. Dostal’s last time out on Saturday saw him take over from injured starter John Gibson and stop 32 of 33 shots the final two periods to beat Nashville 5-2 and end a five-game Predators’ winning streak.

Ducks’ veteran Gibson, 31, was supposed to be the No. 1 netminder this season but missed the season’s first few weeks due to an emergency appendectomy. That’s enabled Dostal, 24, to play the bulk of games and make his case as the No. 1 guy.

  • 20. Late Night Hoops on Tuesday as Irish Host Georgia Tech – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Fighting Irish (9-10, 3-5) men’s basketball team looks to make it two wins in a row when they return home to complete the two-game series with Georgia Tech (9-11, 3-6). They’ll also have revenge in the back of their minds, trying to avenge a 75-86 loss in Atlanta on NYE. The Irish and Yellow Jackets will tip off at 9 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

Tuesday night also marks the program’s Coaches vs Cancer Game with the staff raising awareness in conjunction with Suits and Sneakers Week.

    ALWAYS CLOSE

The first matchup was a tale of two halves and it also was a game that didn’t feature Markus Burton. The Irish found themselves in a 19-point halftime deficit after a poor shooting start; however, the Irish fought back in the second half and cut it to a one-possession game with just under six minutes left. The Irish ultimately shot 60.0 percent in the second half, scoring 51 points. Tae Davis tied his career high in points with 27, with 22 being scored in the second half.

For whatever reason, these two teams always play close and it’s always a battle. Twenty-one of the last 24 games between these two have been decided by single digits. Five of those games have gone to overtime. Of those 21 games that have been decided by single digits, the average margin of victory has been 4.9.

ND leads the overall series 18-14 with an impressive 12-2 mark at home.

    BURTON EMPHATICALLY BACK

After 39 days away rehabbing his knee injury, Burton has returned and amplified the ND offense. If you discount the Rutgers game since Burton got injured in the first four minutes, the sophomore has recorded 20+ points in seven of his last eight games.

When you look at January-only scoring averages amongst ACC players, Burton ranks second, trailing only Duke’s Cooper Flagg (25.0). Burton is averaging 21.7 ppg in January, which coincides with his ACC scoring average.

Markus Burton has produced four straight games with 20+ points and if he gets to five, he’ll be the first Irish player to achieve said feat since Ben Hansbrough in February of 2011.

The sophomore has recorded incredible stretches during this four-game stint. He scored the first nine points at Virginia before finishing with a team best 21 in the win – tying his season high of four made threes. Prior, Burton dropped a first-half career high 22 points at Syracuse, finishing with 28.

We’ll end on this note … even despite that 2-point Rutgers game dragging down his scoring average, Burton is still averaging 19.9 ppg on the year.

    CHASING ACHIEVEMENTS

Burton is currently averaging 19.9 ppg and 3.3 apg. If he finishes the season at 20.0+ ppg and 3.0+ apg, he’ll become the first Irish player ever to do so. When we broaden the scope, he would become just the 15th ACC player to do so since 1996.

However, Burton isn’t the only one who can cement their name in the Irish record books this season. Grad transfer Matt Allocco owns a 3.50 assist-to-turnover ratio. The highest A/TO ratio in program history for a season was 3.16 by Martin Inglesby back in 2000-01.

Allocco is also converting 47.9 percent from deep which would ranks second all-time in program history for a season. The top two spots both belong to Joe Fredrick who shot 47.2 percent in 1989-90 and 52.1 percent in 1988-89.

    THREE BALL HEATING UP

The three ball is starting to flow for the Fighting Irish. In ACC play, Notre Dame is converting 41.0 percent from beyond the arc, which leads all league schools.

Overall on the year, the Irish have drained 37.6 percent from deep which ranks 31st in the country.

Twice over the past four games, the Irish have connected on double-digit treys. They sunk 14 at Duke (which tied their season high) and 12 in the win at Virginia.

    PROGRAM FIRST IN CHARLOTTESVILLE

There’s not a better way to correct a certain ACC road narrative then by claiming a road victory in a building you’ve never won in. The Irish did just that this past Saturday with a 74-59 victory at Virginia. Coach Shrewsberry has now defeated Virginia twice in three matchups.

The Irish were led by Markus Burton with 21 points, shooting 50% on the night and 4-6 from behind the arc. Tae Davis finished with 16 points and six rebounds.

Notre Dame shot 48% on the game and an impressive 52% from three, knocking down 12 from deep. The Irish held the Cavaliers to 40% from the floor as they outrebounded Virginia 39-27.

    THE TAE-KOVER

Tae Davis has emerged as one of the top talents in the ACC and should be a candidate for Most Improved.

Tae is averaging a career best 16.4 ppg, up from last year’s 9.2 ppg. His scoring average ranks 10th amongst ACC players.

The Indy native is also shooting a career best 50.5 percent, up from last year’s 48.4. In ACC play, Tae’s scoring average is slightly higher at 17.3 ppg.

Tae is ultimately riding a career best 14 straight games in double figures. Where is he getting it done at? Well, the junior has been highly proficient around the rim where he’s 70-of-104 (.673). He’s also improved from the free-throw line over the course of the season. He’s 22 for his last 27, raising his FT% to a career best 76.7 percent.

    EVOLVING

When Burton was recovering, other Irish had to step up and evolve and we saw it unfold.  We’ve already mentioned how Tae Davis is posting career numbers, but so is Braeden Shrewsberry.

The sophomore guard is averaging 14.7 ppg, up from last year’s 10.2. He’s shooting 43.5 percent, which is up from last year’s 39.8.

    • He’s connecting on 2.8 threes per game this season, with a .371 clip from beyond the arc. Shrewsberry’s sweet spot has been the corner three where he’s 14-31 (.452), which is 9.7 percent above the D1 average. Shrewsberry boasts higher three ball numbers in ACC play where he ranks third in 3pt FG% (.431) and second in threes/game (3.1).

However, it’s important to point out that he’s added to his overall arsenal with a dangerous floater that keeps defenders guessing. He’s shooting 47.1 percent from midrange twos and 48.6 percent from the paint. He’s 53.9 percent overall from two-point range.

    VET LEADER

When Coach Shrews added grad transfer Matt Allocco to the roster he got two things – a talented guard with NCAA Tournament experience and a leader by every definition of the word. Coach Shrews hoped that his young core of players would pick up those characteristics and then be leaders to the next group coming in.

This season, Allocco is averaging 10.1 ppg on 46.7 percent shooting. He’s draining a career best 47.9 percent from three, which would ranks as the second highest for a season in program history.

As previously mentioned, Allocco is also on pace for the highest A/TO ratio in program history at 3.50.

Allocco also leads the team in defensive rebounds per game at 4.3 and leads in +/- at +94 on the year. Lastly, the Ohio native is averaging 1.5 steals in ACC play which ranks ninth.

    NOTRE NOTABLES

    • With 13 points in the win over BC on Jan. 13, Matt Allocco officially crossed over the 1,000 career point milestone. He currently sits at 1,027.
    • Allocco boasts a true shooting percentage of 70.8 over the last five games, which according to CBB Analytics ranks in the 99th percentile.
    • Kebba entered the year with just four double-digit scoring performances to his name. He’s posted three in ACC play including his first career double-double at NC State.
    • Speaking of Kebba, the junior is averaging 2.9 offensive rebounds/game in ACC play, which ranks fourth in the league.
    • Braeden is comfortable playing at home where he averages 15.8 ppg on 48.0 percent shooting.
    • Burton is averaging 2.2 made threes per game in ACC play which ranks eighth in  the league.
    • Yes Sir! – The freshman guard impressed at #4 Duke, recording his first double-digit scoring performance with 11 points on 4-7 shooting, plus 2-4 from three.
    • Notre Dame continues to raise its KenPom Offense Adj. Efficiency. Over the last several games, it has risen from 56th to 40th with a rating of 116.6. Notre Dame’s overall KenPom rating sits at No. 76.
