Northern California forecast | Dry Wednesday ahead of more rain, snow
Wednesday offers a brief break from wet weather for Northern California after it received a soaking from steady rain and heavy Sierra snow driven by an atmospheric river. But more rain and snow arrive on Thursday. Meteorologist Heather Waldman said there will be scattered showers during the morning commute and the rain will continue on and off through the evening. Expect the rain as early as 8 a.m. in the Valley. Amounts will be far less than what the region saw on Tuesday. Our weather team says the Sacramento Valley could see up to three-quarters of an inch in some areas from Thursday into Friday. Flooding is not expected to be an issue on Thursday. However, the storm could cause issues for travel in the Sierra from Thursday into Friday with snow and wind.Waldman said snow levels will start as low as 5,000 feet on Thursday and then rise to about 7,000 feet on Thursday night. That means areas near Baxter on Interstate 80 and Kyburz on Highway 50 are likely to see snow before rain mixes in. Expect Sierra chain controls to start around 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. and last throughout the day Thursday. The snow level will drop to around 4,000 feet on Friday. Two to three feet of snow is possible at 7,000 feet and above. Areas below that will have a mix of rain and snow. No. 23 Illinois opens the first of back-to-back road games on Wednesday night at Rutgers (7:30 p.m. CT, BTN).
The Rutgers matchup is the third of five games in 13 days across four locations for the Illini from Jan. 30-Feb. 11.
The Fighting Illini are coming off a come-from-behind win over Ohio State on Sunday in which the Illini erased an 11-point second-half deficit to secure their 10th victory of the season at State Farm Center.
The freshman duo of Will Riley and Morez Johnson Jr. keyed the Illini win over the Buckeyes. Riley came off the bench to score 24 points, with 20 coming in the second half. His 24 points were the most by a freshman reserve in a Big Ten game this season. Johnson posted his third double-double of the year with 14 points and a team-season-high 15 rebounds (seven offensive).
Will Riley has earned his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award. He scored 16 points with a game-high four 3-pointers at Nebraska on Thursday before his 24-point outburst vs. Ohio State on Sunday. For the week, Riley averaged 20 points and 3.5 rebounds, shooting 52% from the field, including 45.5% from 3-point range.
Illinois is the nation’s top rebounding team, leading the NCAA in rebounds per game (45.5 rpg), defensive rebounds per game (31.8 rpg), and rebound margin (+11.7 rpg).
Illinois is No. 12 in the latest NCAA NET rankings, second in the Big Ten. The Illini are tied for fifth nationally with six Quad 1 wins.
Head coach Brad Underwood is 9-3 against Rutgers and has led Illinois to wins in five of the last six meetings, including an 86-63 victory in Piscataway last season as part of a season sweep.
Overall, Illinois owns a 13-4 lead in the all-time series with Rutgers. The Illini are 12-4 vs. the Scarlet Knights since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014-15.
In Illinois’ 87-79 win vs. Ohio State, the team improved to 14-1 on the season when scoring at least 80 points. The Illini’s 15 games with 80+ points are tied with Iowa for most in the Big Ten, and tied for sixth nationally with the Hawkeyes and No. 1-ranked Auburn. Among teams with at least 15 80-point games, Illinois’ .933 win percentage ranks third in the nation behind Auburn at 15-0 (1.000) and Alabama at 18-1 (.947).
Illinois is a combined 5-4 away from State Farm Center this season, with a 3-3 mark in true road contests. The Illini had won three straight conference road games prior to an 80-78 heartbreaker at No. 12 Michigan State on Jan. 19, and an 80-74 overtime loss at Nebraska on Jan. 30.
Illinois is 32-24 (.571) in Big Ten road games since the start of the 2019-20 season, the best mark in the league over the last six seasons.
At 3-3 in conference road games so far this season, the Illini are on pace to finish .500 or better on the road in league play for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
The Illini secured their 10th home win of the season vs. Ohio State (Feb. 2), their sixth straight season with at least 10 home wins at State Farm Center under Brad Underwood. Since 2019-20, the Illini boast the third-best home record in the Big Ten at 79-16 (.832). Nationally, that ranks 13th among teams that have played each of the last six seasons in a power conference.
On Monday, Kasparas Jakucionis was named to Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List. It is the latest midseason honor for Jakucionis, who has also been a unanimous selection to the five-player Freshman All-America Team by The Athletic, a Midseason All-America third team selection by The Sporting News, and a John R. Wooden Award Midseason Watch List selection.
Illinois is No. 13 in the latest KenPom net rating at 24.97. The Fighting Illini are on pace for their fourth top-20 rating in the last five seasons under Brad Underwood.
Four of Illinois’ last seven wins have come by 25+ points. The Illini defeated Chicago State, 117-64 (+53), recorded an historic 109-77 (+32) victory at No. 9 Oregon, earned a 91-52 (+39) home win over Penn State, and rolled to a 94-69 (+25) victory at Indiana. The Illini have led by 25+ points in nine games this season.
Illinois is averaging 85.3 points, the team’s highest output since the 1988-89 Flyin’ Illini averaged 86.4 ppg. Illinois is on pace for the No. 6 scoring offense mark in program history.
Illinois ranks second in the Big Ten with a scoring margin of +14.9 points. That is on pace for No. 3 in the Illini record book behind the 1942-43 team, which outscored opponents by 20.6 points per game, and the 2004-05 Illini that posted a scoring margin of +15.9 ppg., the team’s best mark since 1960.
Illinois leads the nation in rebounding at 45.5 boards per game, on pace for the program’s best average in 53 seasons, since ( 48.0 rpg in 1971-72). The Orange and Blue have outrebounded their opponent in 19 of 22 games this season.
The Illini rank No. 12 in KenPom adjusted defensive efficiency (93.6), on pace for its highest ranking since reaching seventh during the 2021 season, and the second-best number of the Underwood era (88.9 in 2021).
Illinois is sixth nationally in KenPom’s effective field goal percentage defense (.440), ranking ninth in 2-point defense (.439) and 15th in 3-point defense (.294). Illinois, Tennessee, and Florida are the only three programs to rank in the top 15 of both categories.
According to KenPom, the Illini rank third nationally, and first among Power Conference programs, with a 3-point attempt rate (3-point attempts/total field goal attempts) of 30.1%. Among major conference teams, Illinois ranks first nationally with five games of 15+ made 3-pointers.
Illinois is 3-3 against Top-25 ranked teams this season with wins over No. 19 Arkansas, No. 20 Wisconsin, and at No. 9 Oregon. The Illini’s three ranked wins are tied for 10th most in the nation.
Brad Underwood has led the Illini program to Top-25 rankings in seven consecutive seasons, currently at No. 23 in the latest AP poll and 25th in the coaches poll. Illinois has been ranked for a total of nine weeks this season, including an active streak of seven-consecutive weeks, and has reached as high as 13th.
Illinois has registered 76 wins in league play since the start of the 2019-20 season, one behind Purdue for the most in the conference over the last six seasons. And when including the conference tournament, the Illini have 81 wins during this time span, also one behind Purdue’s mark.
The Illini won the 2024 Big Ten Tournament championship as the #2 seed, captured the regular season championship in 2022, and led the conference in wins while adding a B1G Tournament crown in 2021, and the team’s three total championships during that span are tied with Purdue for the most in the Big Ten.
Following the 2024 Elite Eight appearance and Big Ten Tournament Championship, Illinois has a dramatically different roster this season. The program returns just one rotation player – last year’s ninth-leading scorer Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn – and returns just 2.9% of its minutes, 2.2% of its points, and 2.0% of its rebounds overall.
Eight different Illini players have recorded a 20-point game this season, tied for the top mark in the NCAA, and the most by any Big Ten program since at least 2004-05.
Newcomers to the Illini roster have accounted for 91.3% of the team’s scoring so far (1,696 of 1,857 total points), with UI freshmen accounting for 41.4% of those points (702).
Four of the Illinois’ top scorers and rebounders are all in their first year of collegiate basketball. Freshman G Kasparas Jakucionis ranks first in scoring (15.6 ppg) and third in rebounding (5.7 rpg). Sophomore C Tomislav Ivisic nearly averages a double-double at 12.9 points (second on team) and team-leading 8.6 rebounds. Freshman F Will Riley is the Illini’s No. 4 scorer at 11.0 points per game. And Freshman F Morez Johnson Jr. ranks second on the team at 6.9 rebounds per game with a team-leading 59 offensive boards (2.7 per game).
At 15.6 points per game, point guard Kasparas Jakucionis is just shy of the Illinois freshman record for scoring average (15.9 ppg) set by Kiwane Garris 31 years ago.
Jakucionis has posted four game this season with 20+ points, 6+ rebounds and 5+ assists, tied for third nationally with Auburn fifth-year senior Johni Broome and Purdue junior Braden Smith.
Jakucionis scored 20+ points in six straight games from Nov. 25-Dec. 22, shattering the Illini freshman record for consecutive 20-point games (previous record was two).
Jakucionis became the fourth Big Ten freshman since 1996-97 with at least six-straight 20-point games, and the first to do so since Indiana’s Eric Gordon had seven in a row in 2007.
Jakucionis has eight 20-point games this season, tying the Illini all-time record for 20-point games by a freshman with Cory Bradford who set the current mark as a redshirt freshman in 1998-99.
Over his last 15 games, Jakucionis is averaging 17.3 points (259), 5.6 rebounds (84), and 5.3 assists (80), knocking down an average of 2.1 threes per game (32) on 36.8% from 3-point range (32-87) along with 83.8% from the foul line (67-80).
Tomislav Ivisic is the No. 6 rebounder in the Big Ten at 8.6 rpg. Ivisic has led the Illini rebounding effort, which ranks No. 1 nationally in total rebounds per game, in 11 of the 19 games in which he has played.
Ivisic, classified as sophomore in his first season of collegiate competition, has recorded eight double-doubles through 19 games, ranking fourth in the Big Ten, tied for 28th in the NCAA overall, and tied for first among power conference underclassmen.
Ben Humrichous has knocked down at least one 3-pointer in 20 of 22 games this season. He leads the team and ranks 15th in the Big Ten averaging 1.95 triples per contest.
After opening the year averaging 7.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in eight games, Tre White found a rhythm on the court for the Illini. Beginning with a 23-point, 8 rebound effort vs. #20 Wisconsin on Dec. 10, White averaged 12.1 points (157) and 6.2 rebounds (80) the team’s next 13 games, scoring in double figures seven times.
Likewise Kylan Boswell is averaging 13.9 points (195), 6.1 rebounds (85), and 3.6 assists (51) in his last 14 games, reaching double-figures scoring 12 times including a career-high 22 points in the Illini’s win at Indiana (Jan. 14).
Boswell recorded the seventh triple-double in Illinois history and fifth of the Underwood era against Chicago State (Dec. 29), tallying 18 points, career-high 10 rebounds, and career-high 10 assists.
Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn continues to make a big impact for the Illini in his sophomore season. Over his last 12 games, Gibbs-Lawhorn is averaging 10.3 points (124) while shooting 53.6% (45-84) from the field.
Gibbs-Lawhorn made the first start of his collegiate career vs. Ohio State (Feb. 2), and was key to the Illini’s 87-79 come-from-behind victory. He posted 10 points highlighted by a momentum-shifting steal and run-out dunk that capped a 12-2 run to pull the Illini to within one possession after OSU’s lead had reached 11 points.
Morez Johnson Jr. is also excelling for the Illini. Over his last 12 games Johnson is averaging 8.5 points (102) and 7.6 rebounds (76), highlighted by a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win over Penn State (Jan. 8), a 15-point, nine-rebound effort in his second-career start vs. Northwestern on Jan. 26, and a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double in the team’s come-from-behind win over Ohio State on Feb. 2.
Johnson, at 6.9 rebounds per game, is on track to tie Efrem Winters (1982-83) for the second-best freshman mark in Illini history, behind only Kofi Cockburn’s 2019-20 season average (8.8 rpg).
Johnson posted his second double-double of the season in Illinois’ Jan. 8 win over Penn State, recording a career-high 20 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. On Feb. 2, he posted his third double-double with 14 points and a team-season-high 15 rebounds vs. Ohio State.
Through 22 games, Johnson has recorded 27 total blocks, tied for sixth in the Illini freshman record book with James Augustine (2002-03). Johnson is on pace to finish his freshman season third among Illini freshmen all-time behind only Deon Thomas (54 in 1990-91) and Kofi Cockburn (44 in 2019-20).
Illinois leads the Big Ten in seven team statistical categories, with the following NCAA rankings: total rebounds per game (1st in NCAA; 45.5), defensive rebounds per game (1st; 31.8), rebound margin (1st; 11.7), 3-point attempts per game (6th; 31.0), free-throw attempts per game (18th; 23.7), field goal percentage defense (19th; .395), and offensive rebounds per game (21st; 13.7).
Three Illini scored 20+ points vs. Penn State – Ben Humrichous (21), Morez Johnson Jr. (20) and Tre White (20). It marked just the third time in the last 35 seasons that Illinois had a game featuring a trio of 20-point scorers.
Illinois’ 32-point road win over #9 Oregon was the largest margin of victory ever by a road team over an AP Top-10 opponent, and the largest road win in Illinois program history against any top-25 opponent.
In their 109-77 win at #9 Oregon, Illinois became the first Big Ten team since Feb. 9, 1989, to record 100+ points in a Top-10 road win (No. 10 Michigan defeated No. 8 Iowa, 108-107).
Illinois also posted a dominant 94-69 win at Indiana on Jan. 14. The 25-point margin of victory was the second-largest for a Hoosiers’ opponent in Assembly Hall history, while Illinois’ 94 points marked the most ever scored by a visiting team in a regulation game at Assembly Hall.
#23 Illinois Opens Two-Game Road Swing at Rutgers WednesdayThe #23 ranked Illinois Fighting Illini are hitting the road for a two-game swing, starting with a matchup against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Wednesday night.

ESPN Releases Official Trailer for “The Buddy Way” Debuting Wednesday, January 29 on ESPN2 and ESPN+
ESPN has released the official trailer and key art for “The Buddy Way” – a feature-length documentary on the historic life and career of Coach Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens III ’79. Directed by Rory Karpf, executive produced by Peyton Manning, and produced by Omaha Productions, the documentary will premiere on January 29 at 5pm ET on ESPN2 and will be available to stream on ESPN+ following its linear debut.
“The Buddy Way” explores Teevens’ inspiring journey, starting from his early years in Pembroke, MA, and spanning his four-decade-long coaching career. The documentary highlights his championship successes as a multi-sport athlete, his pivotal role at the Manning Passing Academy, and the groundbreaking innovations he made on and off the field that still make him a hero to so many.
“We are honored to share Buddy’s story and preserve his legacy,” said Executive Producer Peyton Manning. “Buddy’s motto as a coach and leader was ‘adjust and improvise.’ But it was more than a motto; Buddy was a true football innovator. He hired female coaches in the college ranks before anybody else, and he emphasized smarter and safer tackling long before the practice was adopted across the sport. Buddy was a terrific coach, but the legacy Buddy leaves behind extends well beyond his success on the field.”
“Buddy Teevens lived a full life,” said Executive Producer Murry Bowden. “He had a major impact on the game of football and the game of life. Documenting this will provide future generations insight into an extraordinary husband, father, coach and visionary. (My wife) Polly and I are delighted to have provided the resources to capture his life on film. We hope this documentary provides inspiration to all who dream big and work hard to leave this earth a better place for future generations.”
“Simply put, Buddy was an extraordinary teacher of football and life,” said Mike Harrity, Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation said. “His classroom was the football field and the ripple effect of his positive impact will be felt for generations to come. Thank you to Polly and Murry Bowden ’71, director Rory Karpf, Peyton Manning, Omaha Productions and so many more for sharing Buddy’s inspiring life journey with the world through this powerful film.”
Through a blend of never-before-seen footage and exclusive interviews with Teevens’ family and football legends, the documentary captures the profound influence he had on the sport. It also features powerful moments from two significant 2024 events: a celebration of life held at Dartmouth in May and the October renaming of the stadium in honor of his lasting legacy with Dartmouth’s football program. These heartfelt scenes provide a deeply personal and compelling portrait of Teevens—both as a man and a coach—emphasizing his resilience, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to lifting those around him.

Analysis of Wednesday night’s Miami Heat-Cleveland Cavaliers
MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 126-106 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers:
– Tyler or no Tyler?
– That will become known by 7 p.m. Thursday, when Eastern Conference reserves are named for the All-Star Game.
– For Heat guard Tyler Herro, it figures to be a close call.
– No more than six guards from the East can make it, based on roster rules.
– Already in as Eastern Conference backcourt starters are Donovan Mitchell and Jalen Brunson.
– Both highly deserving.
– As Mitchell certainly showed in this one on Wednesday night.
– From there, logic says that three of the four remaining East backcourt spots likely go to Damian Lillard, Cade Cunningham and Darius Garland, if only because of Cleveland’s dominance this season.
– So Herro . . . or Trae Young, Tyrese Maxey, LaMelo Ball, Tyrese Haliburton, or someone else?
– Herro’s path could otherwise be as an injury replacement, similar to when Goran Dragic made it for the first time with the Heat.
– The argument is that a better record would have significantly boosted Herro’s chances.
– Instead, back to .500 after this loss.
– As it is, Herro on Wednesday night extended his franchise record to 79 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer.
– It was Herro’s 71st consecutive regular-season game scoring in double figures. As a means of comparison, Jimmy Butler’s longest such Heat streak is 63 consecutive games. The franchise record is 294 by LeBron James.
– For a third consecutive game the Heat again opened with a lineup of Herro, Kel’el Ware, Bam Adebayo, Haywood Highsmith and Duncan Robinson.
– It was Ware’s fifth consecutive start.
– While the Heat were without Butler, the Cavaliers also were shorthanded, with Garland given the night off for rest.
– The Cavaliers were limited in that option, with a nationally televised game Thursday against the Hawks and the league discouraging rest in such games.
– Also out for the Cavaliers were Sam Merrill (illness), Isaac Okoro (shoulder), Dean Wade (knee), and Caris LeVert (wrist).
– Highsmith opened defensively on Mitchell.
– Terry Rozier and Nikola Jovic entered together as the Heat’s first two substitutes.
– With Jaime Jaquez Jr. following at the start of the second period.
– Pelle Larsson later made it 10 deep.
– Energizing as usual.
– With Okoro and Wade out, former Heat forward Max Strus has emerged as Cleveland’s de facto perimeter stopper.
– “It fits his personality. It fits who he is. Done it before. Done it well. Did it in Miami,” Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson said. “We’re lucky we have another one who is capable of doing that.”– Strus and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and Strus shared a pregame embrace.
– Strus then was introduced last among the Cavaliers starters to a warm ovation.
– Jovic extended his career-best streak to 12 consecutive games with a 3-pointer.
On Wednesday night, the Miami Heat faced off against the Cleveland Cavaliers in a thrilling matchup that had fans on the edge of their seats. The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams showing off their skills and determination. The Heat came out strong in the first quarter, quickly taking the lead and showcasing their impressive offensive firepower. They were able to capitalize on the Cavaliers’ defensive weaknesses and build a comfortable lead heading into halftime.
However, the Cavaliers didn’t back down and fought their way back into the game in the third quarter. Led by their star player, they were able to make some crucial shots and tighten up their defense to cut into the Heat’s lead.
In the final quarter, it was a nail-biting finish as both teams traded baskets and made key defensive stops. In the end, the Heat were able to hold on to their lead and secure the victory, thanks to some clutch plays from their top players.
Overall, it was an exciting and competitive game that showcased the talent and determination of both teams. The Heat’s offensive prowess and ability to maintain their composure under pressure were key factors in their win, while the Cavaliers showed resilience and never gave up until the final buzzer.
It will be interesting to see how both teams build on this performance and continue to compete at a high level throughout the season. Fans can expect more thrilling matchups between these two teams in the future.

Nevada’s season is slipping away after an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, and it may not get any easier on the road against Boise State.
The Broncos are a considerable home favorite against the Wolf Pack on Wednesday night in hopes of snapping a two game skid on the road, but will play back at home where the team has only lost one game this season.
Can Boise State reaffirm its standing in the Mountain West against a sliding team?
Here’s our betting preview.
Spread
Moneyline
Total: 136.5 (Over -115/Under -105)
Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook
Nevada
Nick Davidson: The junior big man continues to be the hub of the Nevada offense, operating at a career high usage rate while also being a monster around the rim at 6’10”. Many defenders in the Mountain West can’t keep up with Davidson, he has been living at the free throw line this season while also impeding plenty of opposing ball handlers from going to the rim.
Boise State
Tyson Degenhart: The Broncos win continues to come on strong, fresh off 27 points against Colorado State in which Boise State nearly rallied from down double digits on the road to win. Degenhart is playing at an incredibly high level in Mountain West play, shooting 40% from beyond the arc after he shot 17% from the floor in non-conference play.
Boise State is owed quite a bit of shooting regression from the opposition, and Nevada isn’t equipped to continue to give the team fits.
The Broncos are a sturdy defense, but are allowing opponents to shoot 42% from beyond the arc in league play. Nevada has been struggling to shoot from the perimeter in league play, way down from its top 30 percent in the country at 32% in league play. However, the team is far more interested in attacking the mid-range and the rim, ranking ninth in 3-point rate.
With both teams willing to play in the half court, each team is outside the top 300 in adjusted tempo, per KenPom, I envision the game is filled with contested jump shots.
Boise State has struggled to shoot from the perimeter all season — 242nd in the nation — but the compact Nevada defense forces teams to shoot 45% of its shots from beyond the arc, good for 329th in the country.
These two teams are built to play in a limited possession matchup where each defense has the edge.
I’ll side with the under.
PICK: UNDER 136.5

In a highly anticipated matchup, the Nevada Wolf Pack will take on the Boise State Broncos on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Both teams come into this game with impressive records and will be looking to secure a crucial win in conference play. Here is a prediction, odds, and key players to watch for this exciting showdown.Prediction:
This game is shaping up to be a close battle between two talented teams. Nevada has been playing well as of late, with a strong offense led by Jalen Harris, who is averaging over 19 points per game. Boise State, on the other hand, has been solid on both ends of the court, with Derrick Alston Jr. leading the way with nearly 19 points per game.In a tight contest, I predict that Nevada will come out on top in a close game. Their offensive firepower and ability to score in bunches will give them the edge in this matchup.
Odds:
According to the latest odds, Nevada is favored to win this game by a slim margin. The spread is currently set at -3 in favor of the Wolf Pack. The over/under for total points scored is set at 146.5.Key Players:
– Jalen Harris (Nevada): The senior guard has been a scoring machine for Nevada this season, averaging over 19 points per game. His ability to create his own shot and score from anywhere on the court will be crucial for the Wolf Pack in this game.
– Derrick Alston Jr. (Boise State): The junior guard has been a standout player for the Broncos this season, averaging nearly 19 points per game. His scoring ability and leadership on the court will be instrumental in helping Boise State secure a win.Overall, this game is sure to be an exciting matchup between two talented teams. Be sure to tune in on Wednesday, Jan. 29 to see who comes out on top in this showdown between Nevada and Boise State.

Streak W12 L2
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia will try and snap its first losing streak of the Darian DeVries era on Wednesday night against one of the hottest teams in the country.
The Mountaineers, losers of two straight to Arizona State and Kansas State, will try and right things against a surging 16-3 Houston team that is ranked sixth in this week’s polls and has won 12 straight games following last Saturday’s 92-86 double-overtime victory at Kansas.
Among Houston’s recent wins is a 70-54 triumph against West Virginia in its arena on Jan. 15.
In that game, Houston sent multiple defenders at Mountaineer guard Javon Small after he scored nine early points, which led to Amani Hansberry contributing a team-best 16, including 12 in a row during one point in the second half. The Mountaineers actually had it to a one-possession game with 12:36 remaining before going ice cold.
Frigid 3-point shooting has also plagued West Virginia in its recent two-game slide.
WVU connected on only 19% of its 21 tries from behind the arc in a 73-60 loss at Kansas State last Saturday, four days after misfiring on 25 of its 29 triples in a 65-57 home defeat to Arizona State.
That’s eight for the last 50 from behind the 3-point line, but DeVries maintains his bigger concern is a defense that allowed Kansas State to score on nearly 56% of its offensive possessions one game after allowing Arizona State to grab 14 offensive rebounds and hold a commanding 46-to-28 advantage on the glass.
Those are things his team managed to avoid up through its 64-57 upset victory over then-second-ranked Iowa State on Jan. 18.
“We had a bad week of shooting, for sure, but it ultimately is still about our defense,” DeVries noted. “On both of those nights, when we didn’t shoot it well, our defense wasn’t what it has been either. Our main issue was those breakdowns defensively, and when we weren’t shooting well, we couldn’t keep up, and that hurt us in both of those.”
Small was terrific against the Cyclones, scoring a game-high 27 points while grabbing seven rebounds, handing out five assists and making four steals. Since then, teams have made stopping him their primary focus while taking their chances with other players with open shots.
“For us, it’s about getting him off the ball some,” DeVries said. “We still need him with the ball in his hands making plays, but they are going to bring two guys to the ball when he has it. Now the one side to that is we have a numbers game on the backside of that. If we get it out of there, which we have, that’s where some of those 3-point opportunities come. You make that one extra pass then you are shooting a wide-open 3, and then it’s a matter of making them.
“And we’re going to do that,” he added. “We didn’t last week, but I have all of the confidence in the world that we will make those shots more than we won’t.”
In both losses, West Virginia (13-6 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 play) dug itself an early hole it couldn’t climb out of, including a 19-2 deficit to begin at Kansas State.
Despite the heavy level of attention, Small was still West Virginia’s leading scorer in both games, including 22 against Kansas State.
“We can’t put it all on Javon,” DeVries pointed out. “We’ve got to continue to get that second scorer and that third scorer on most nights.”
Houston, meanwhile, is getting balanced production across the board. Forward J’Wan Roberts tallied 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting and guard LJ Cryer connected on half of his 10 3-point tries for 18 points the first time these two teams met in Houston.
Last Saturday at Kansas, Roberts hit for 24, while grabbing nine rebounds and handing out five assists.
Cryer was held in check, which opened things up for 6-foot-4 guard Milos Uzan, who just missed a triple-double with 17 points, nine rebounds and nine assists to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors.
Giving the Cougars a big boost off the bench was 6-foot-1 guard Mylik Wilson, a non-factor in the West Virginia win but a big factor against the Jayhawks. He finished with 18 points on eight-of-11 shooting, including a pair of triples.
Houston’s guards, Cryer, Uzan, Wilson and Emanual Sharp, are basically interchangeable, just like its 6-foot-8 bigs, Roberts, Joseph Tugler and Ja’Vier Francis.
Throw in 6-foot-8 wing Terrance Arceneaux, averaging 8.2 points per game, and you are looking at one of the best eight-man rotations in the country right now.
“Across the board, both offensively and defensively, they have great versatility,” DeVries said. “Then, they go to the bench, and they have another guy who comes in at 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9 who can run, jump, shoot or whatever it may be.
“They all complement each other really well in the way they play. They can come out and trap a ball screen and really blitz it and be aggressive and get into rotations, or they can just come out and switch it, and they’re fine with that either way,” DeVries continued. “On the offensive end, same type of deal. Their three guards each shoot it at a high, high level, and then they can post it with Roberts, or they bring in offensive rebounders, which is why they are where they are right now.”
Houston’s balanced attack ranges from Cryer’s team-leading 13.5 points per game down to Francis’ 5.4 points per contest coming off the bench. Sharp (13.4 ppg.) and Roberts (11.3 ppg.) are also averaging double figures.
The Cougars have yet to lose in eight Big 12 outings, including comfortable victories over BYU, TCU, Kansas State, West Virginia and Utah.
Wednesday night will be Houston’s first-ever visit to the WVU Coliseum.
The game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+ (Eric Rothman and Tim Welsh).
Mountaineer Sports Network radio coverage with Tony Caridi, Brad Howe and studio host David Kahn will get things started at 6 p.m. on stations throughout West Virginia, online via WVUsports.com and the popular Varsity Network and WVU Gameday apps.
Tickets remain and can be purchased through the Mountaineer Ticket Office by logging on to WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800-WVU-GAME.
Get ready Mountaineer fans, because the surging Cougars are coming to town! The BYU men’s basketball team will be facing off against West Virginia University in what is sure to be an intense matchup at the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday night.BYU has been on a hot streak lately, winning their last five games and climbing up the rankings. Led by standout players like Alex Barcello and Caleb Lohner, the Cougars have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers will be looking to defend their home court and come out on top against BYU. With a talented roster featuring players like Taz Sherman and Derek Culver, WVU has the skills and determination to give the Cougars a run for their money.
