Former Sen. Bob Menendez to be sentenced Wednesday for corruption and bribery scheme
CNN
—
Former Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez could face more than a decade in prison when he is sentenced Wednesday for taking cash, a Mercedes Benz and gold bars as bribes in exchange for helping three New Jersey businessmen and the government of Egypt.
Menendez was convicted in July of 16 felony counts for the long-running corruption scheme following a nine-week trial. He became the first US senator charged and convicted of acting as an agent of a foreign government. Dozens of witnesses testified, including one of the businessmen involved in the scheme.
His sentencing marks a dramatic fall for the lawmaker born to Cuban emigres who got his start in politics in Union City, New Jersey. Menendez beat one federal indictment on bribery charges in 2018 and became one of the most powerful senators as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee – a position he gave up after he was charged in the current bribery scheme in 2023.
Prosecutors with the US attorney’s office in Manhattan have asked Judge Sidney Stein to sentence the former New Jersey senator to “at least 15 years” in prison and order him to pay millions of dollars in forfeiture and fines “to provide just punishment for this extraordinary abuse of power and betrayal of public trust.”
“Menendez’s conduct may be the most serious for which a U.S. Senator has been convicted in the history of the Republic,” prosecutors wrote. The US Probation Office recommends a sentence of 12 years in prison.
The 71-year-old lawmaker, who had adamantly maintained his innocence, has submitted more than 100 letters of support, including from the former president of Cyprus, local New Jersey politicians, religious figures, and constituents. His lawyers are asking for no prison and at least two years of “rigorous community service.”
“We respectfully submit that, notwithstanding his conviction, Bob is deserving of mercy because of the penalties already imposed, his age, and the lack of a compelling need to impose a custodial sentence,” his lawyers wrote to the judge. “Until this conviction marred his reputation, his career and life has been celebrated mainly for his work on behalf of the powerless and downtrodden,” they added.
His lawyers asked the judge to allow Menendez to stay out of prison as he appeals his conviction.
During the trial, the jury heard evidence that during a search of the senator’s home FBI agents found gold bars and envelopes stuffed with cash, some inside shoes and in a jacket pocket bearing the Senator’s name.
In exchange, prosecutors alleged that Menendez pressured the US Department of Agriculture over a monopoly on halal meat certification that benefited one of the businessmen, he pushed through military aid to Egypt and “modulated his criticism” of the country’s human rights abuses. He also attempted to tamper with two criminal investigations tied to the other two businessmen.
The criminal trial was not the first for the former senator, who was previously indicted on corruption charges in 2015 for allegedly accepting bribes from a wealthy ophthalmologist in exchange for political favors. Following a mistrial in 2017, Menendez was acquitted on several charges in 2018 with the Department of Justice dropping those that remained.
The longtime politician was indicted in September 2023 along with his wife Nadine, but their trials were severed after she was diagnosed with cancer and began receiving treatment. Nadine Menendez has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go to trial in March.
Former Sen. Bob Menendez is set to be sentenced on Wednesday for his involvement in a corruption and bribery scheme. The New Jersey Democrat was convicted last year on charges of accepting gifts and campaign contributions in exchange for political favors.Menendez has maintained his innocence throughout the trial, but a jury found him guilty on all counts. The sentencing hearing will determine the length of his prison term, which could range from probation to several years behind bars.
The case has been closely watched as it has raised questions about the ethics and integrity of politicians in Washington. Menendez’s sentencing will be a key moment in the ongoing debate about political corruption and the need for accountability among our elected officials.
Stay tuned for updates as the sentencing hearing unfolds on Wednesday.

PORTLAND (WGME)— Snow will taper off by Wednesday afternoon with a few lingering snow showers or squalls in Maine.
An active pattern continues with more snowfall chances through the weekend.
Steady snow will give way to a few lingering snow showers or squalls Wednesday afternoon.
Highs will range from near 40 in southern Maine to 20s across central and northern Maine.
Bitter cold is back for Thursday.
Highs will only be in the teens with sunny skies and breezy winds.
Our next storm likely arrives on Friday afternoon.
There is still considerable uncertainty with this forecast, but at this point it looks like mostly snow with possibly some rain mixing in in far southern Maine.
Snow and possibly some rain will continue into Friday night, wrapping up very early on Saturday.
Cold air is then back for Saturday with highs in the teens or low 20s under sunny skies.
Sunday will start out quiet, but will turn more active for the afternoon and evening.
Another round of snowfall is looking likely into Sunday night, but overall amounts look light at this time.
Due to a milder Monday, if precipitation persists into the day it would likely change to rain. However, most precipitation will likely fall Sunday night as all snow.
As a winter storm swept through Maine on Wednesday, blanketing the state with several inches of snow, travel conditions became treacherous for commuters and residents alike. The heavy snowfall led to slick roads, reduced visibility, and numerous accidents reported on major highways. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state, warning of hazardous travel conditions and urging residents to exercise caution while driving. Snow plows worked tirelessly to clear the roads, but the steady snowfall made it challenging to keep up with the accumulation.
Despite the challenges posed by the storm, Maine residents are no strangers to winter weather, and many were prepared with snow tires, shovels, and warm clothing. Schools and businesses remained open, but some opted to close early or allow employees to work from home to avoid the hazardous conditions.
The winter weather is far from over, as forecasters predict another round of snow later this week. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and be prepared for more winter weather in the days to come. Stay safe and stay warm, Maine!

First Alert Weather: Another Yellow Alert Wednesday for lake snows & gusty winds
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Here we go again! We’re tracking another Yellow Alert for Wednesday as a clipper system moves through.
Light area-wide snow Tuesday night tapers to snow showers by Wednesday morning. Overall amounts will be minor, with a coating to a few inches of new snow for most. The winds will crank once again, with some gusts nearing 40 mph out of the northwest on Wednesday. This will once again create some areas of blowing and drifting snow, which may slow you down on the roads, especially Wednesday morning. Colder air begins to move in, and temperatures will drop back into the 20s, with some local lake snow and some squalls developing.
Any additional snow on Wednesday also be fairly minor, but the combination of snow on the ground and the gusty wind will produce quickly changing conditions on the roads, along with lower visibility in those areas.
Thursday will be fairly quiet, with a few early flurries followed by some sun, and a chill to the air. Temperatures will actually climb Thursday night into Friday ahead of our next system. This one will bring some rain to the area, before colder air changes any rain back over to some wet snow later in the day.
First Alert Weather: Another Yellow Alert Wednesday for lake snows & gusty windsAttention all residents in the Great Lakes region: brace yourselves for another round of winter weather on Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Yellow Alert for lake effect snows and gusty winds, with potentially hazardous conditions expected throughout the day.
Lake effect snow occurs when cold air passes over the relatively warmer waters of the Great Lakes, causing heavy snow showers to develop. This can lead to reduced visibility and slick road conditions, so be sure to use caution while driving.
In addition to the snow, gusty winds will also be a factor on Wednesday. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph are possible, which could lead to blowing snow and difficult travel conditions.
Make sure to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and advisories, and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this winter weather event. Stay warm and be prepared for another round of snowy and windy conditions on Wednesday.

Strands #332
“Show of hands”
Hi Strands fans. Bravo to the NYT’s puzzle setters for an excellent theme today. “Show of hands” is a very clever play on words that sent me in completely the wrong direction.
When I found the word FINGER in the bottom-right corner, I thought I was simply on the hunt for parts of the hand. But when I failed to find “wrist”, “thumb” or “knuckle” I accepted defeat and took a clue, which revealed SOCK. After a moment’s confusion, I realized this was about types of puppet.
Annoyingly, I could see the word “puppet” spelt across the board, and felt sure I had the spangram when I connected “puppetshow”. But it was rejected, so I went back to collecting types of puppet instead.
I found GLOVE diagonally below SOCK, followed by STICK below it and SHADOW in the bottom-left corner.
I now had one answer and the spangram to find, but I couldn’t tear them apart so reluctantly used another clue. It revealed MARIONETTE in the top-left corner, which finally let me figure out where the spangram went.
It was, of course, PUPPETMASTER.

Strands
Looking for Tuesday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:
Have you ever completed a puzzle and still not really had any idea what was going on by the end of it? That’s how I feel about today’s very strange Strands.
How To Play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.
There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it’s possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.
If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you’ll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.
Be warned: You’ll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you’ll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes.
What Is Today’s Strands Hint?
NYT hint first and then I will give one of my own to help further. The official hint is:
Show of Hands
And my hint is:
Punch and Judy
What Are Today’s Strands Answers?
Spangram first and then I will post a full list of answers underneath that. The spangram is:
PUPPETMASTER
And here is where you find that on the board:
Strands
And the answers:
- STICK
- SOCK
- MARIONETTE
- GLOVES
- FINGER
- SHADOW
Strands
Okay I…what? I have figured out the basics of what’s going on here, as these are the ingredients to some sort of puppet show. But multiple types it seems? Like doing shadow figures isn’t the same as controlling a full marionette. Where does a stick come into play, the thing at the top of that? Do people wear gloves for puppet shows? I’m so confused about all of this, but I still got it done through many, many, many hints.

#NYT #Strands #Hints #Spangram #Answers #Wednesday #JanuaryWidespread snow ahead for Wednesday morning – Boston News, Weather, Sports
We’ve got a few chances for snow over the next few days in Massachusetts, with the best bet early Wednesday morning.
Monday was supposed to be the quietest day this week, yet we kicked off the work week with an earthquake! At 10:23 a.m. there was a magnitude-3.8 earthquake centered over 6 miles southeast of York Harbor, Maine. Shaking was felt all across Massachusetts.
For the rest of your Monday evening it’ll be mostly clear, chilly and still breezy. Lows early Tuesday morning will get down to the mid to upper 20s, but that’ll feel like it’s 10 degrees colder than it really is due to the breezy conditions. We also have a chance for some hit-or-miss, isolated snow showers before 9 a.m. that could lead to some spotty coatings.
After that front rolls through, though, winds will pick up significantly. We’re expecting a whipping wind with gusts topping 35-40 mph at times.
So while afternoon highs might reach the 30s, that’ll only feel like the teens. Bundle up!
The wind dies back down Tuesday evening. Wednesday morning lows will be back to the teens, and that’s when we have the better chance for more widespread snow showers. The snow will be light, but most widespread, in the morning. Snow becomes more scattered into the afternoon, but that scattered snow has more of an ability to pack a punch with heavier snowfall rates. Most of us will pick up between 1-2 inches with just a coating to an inch for the southeast coast.
Thursday will be breezy again but no where at the level of Tuesday’s wind. However, with lows in the teens and highs only in the 20s, a slight breeze will make it feel like it’s in the single digits and teens all day long. At least the sun will be shining.
As we usher into Friday and the weekend, the weather becomes a little bit unsettled again. We’re tracking our next chances for rain and snow.
Get ready, Boston! A winter wonderland is on the way as widespread snow is expected to blanket the city on Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service is forecasting several inches of snow accumulation, with the heaviest bands hitting during the early morning commute.Make sure to bundle up and give yourself extra time to travel, as slippery road conditions are likely. Stay tuned to your local news station for updates on school closures and delays.
Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that a fresh coat of snow can turn the city into a magical winter wonderland. So grab your boots and enjoy the snowy scenery before it melts away.
Stay safe and warm, Boston! And don’t forget to share your snowy photos with us using #BostonSnow.

New England forecast calls for snow showers into Wednesday
The snow is expected to last overnight through early Wednesday afternoon:
• 11 p.m. – 6 a.m.: Widespread snow then a brief break in the precipitation.
• 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Scattered snow showers.
Although the heaviest of the snow should clear out by commuting time, roads could be slippery so give yourself some extra time in the morning.
Another system will bring more widespread snow showers across New England overnight into Wednesday morning, with lingering snow showers through the afternoon.Boston Globe Snowfall accumulations from this storm will generally range from 1 to 3 inches across New England, especially north of the Mass Pike and west of I-95. Boston should see about an inch or so.
Mountainous portions of Western Mass. and Vermont may see about 4 to 5 inches, with locally higher totals to about 6 inches.
Boston and the southeastern portion of New England could also see pockets of cold rain into the afternoon as temperatures rise above-freezing by then.
A clipper system will see some enhanced moisture as it nears the coast, bringing some snow to parts of Central and Northern New England overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.Boston Globe There’s a chance for dangerous snow squalls to appear around late morning or early afternoon. Bursts of sudden and intense wind and snow, squalls are winter’s version of thunderstorms with a passing cold front. They form during a process known as from convective lift, meaning surface air is driven high into the atmosphere from more dense air behind a cold front. This can lead to quickly developing snow squalls in which bursts of moderate to heavy snow fall in a very short amount of time, sharply reducing visibility and causing near white-out conditions, making driving dangerous. Squalls are very short-lived, but can leave drivers stunned with the quick onset of intense snowfall.
Make sure you have emergency alerts enabled on your mobile phone so you know when a snow squall warning is issued in your area. If you get an alert, exit the road at the next opportunity and wait until the warning expires.
Also, a few areas across Western Mass., New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine remain under winter weather alerts through Wednesday afternoon.
Here are the latest winter storm alerts for New England. A winter storm warning has been issued for southern Vermont.Boston Globe With a southwesterly flow building after the first wave early this morning, the cold temperatures will rise closer to the low 40s across Greater Boston. This will limit the amount of snow the city sees, with more chances for rain than snow during the second round.
The highs for Wednesday will be on the warmer side, in the 40s for Greater Boston.Boston Globe It’ll become windy just like yesterday as the core of the storm passes through, with average speeds between 10 and 15 miles per hour and the chance for gusts to reach 30 miles an hour.
Forecast wind gusts Wednesday afternoon.Boston Globe Southern New England: Some scattered snow showers under mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures will build to the 40-degree mark Wednesday afternoon, which might make for cold rain for Boston, Providence, and the South Shore. Snow totals should stay to about a coating to an inch with this storm. Wind will be be gusty at times, with some reaching 20 to 30 mph.
Central and Western Mass.: Very early snow will exit after bringing anywhere from a coating to a few inches of snow. Scattered snow showers will remain across the region into the early afternoon. Also a chance for snow squalls. Highs will eventually reach the upper 30s. As far as the Berkshires go, there may be higher snow totals with temperatures stalling in the low 30s.
Cape and islands: Windy with a few flakes in the early morning. Then scattered showers possible during the late morning and afternoon; some might have a wintry mix with them. Highs to the low 40s with gusty winds in place where the Cape might reach or exceed 40 mph at times.
Northern New England: Widespread snow during the early morning hours, with Maine seeing the steady snow into the mid- to late morning. Trailing scattered snow showers with possible snow squalls during the early afternoon. Highs in the upper 20s and low 30s with more calm winds in place.

Get ready to break out the shovels and snow boots, New England! The latest forecast is calling for snow showers to continue through Wednesday. With temperatures dropping and moisture in the air, be prepared for wintry conditions to persist for the next few days.Whether you love the snow or dread the thought of more shoveling, it’s important to stay safe and take precautions during this snowy weather. Make sure to drive carefully, bundle up when heading outside, and keep an eye on any updates from local weather services.
So, grab a warm cup of hot cocoa, cozy up by the fire, and enjoy the winter wonderland outside your window. And remember, spring is just around the corner! Stay safe and stay warm, New England. #NewEnglandWeather #SnowShowers #WinterForecast

More snow ahead Wednesday in Massachusetts – Boston News, Weather, Sports
A few Massachusetts cities and towns got a quick burst of snow Tuesday morning, but even more is on the way overnight into Wednesday.
The most widespread snow rolls in tonight past 11 p.m. or midnight through 6/7 a.m. Wednesday. This snow will be relatively light, and many of us will wake up with between 1-2 inches. Only some spotty coatings are forecast for the southeast. Morning lows will get down to the upper teens and low 20s.
While there may be a lull in the snow in the morning for many, as we usher into the afternoon and warm up a bit, there may be some spotty, hit-or-miss additional snow or rain showers. Highs will reach the upper 30s and low 40s.
While Wednesday will not be nearly as windy as it was Tuesday, we will still see winds gusting to over 25-30 mph.
Thursday is looking bright, cold and windy. Highs will only reach the low to mid 20s, but with gusty winds it’ll feel closer to the teens during the warmest part of the day. Bundle up!
A warm-up Friday will bring in some likely chances for rain. While it looks like rain for most, there may be some spots of a wintry mix in the highest elevations of the Worcester hills at times. Regardless, highs will be mild in the low to mid 40s. Winds will still be breezy with gusts over 20 mph.
Saturday will be a repeat of Thursday with bright skies and cold highs in the mid to upper 20s. Our next chance for snow comes Sunday.
As winter continues to make its presence known in Massachusetts, residents can expect even more snow on Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state, including the Boston area.Forecasters are predicting several inches of snowfall, with the heaviest amounts expected in the late morning and early afternoon. Commuters should be prepared for slick roads and reduced visibility, so it’s important to allow extra travel time and drive cautiously.
In addition to the snow, gusty winds may also be a factor, leading to blowing and drifting snow in some areas. This could further impact travel conditions, so it’s best to stay updated on the latest weather forecast before heading out.
Despite the inconvenience, the snow is sure to bring a picturesque winter wonderland to Massachusetts. So bundle up, stay safe, and enjoy the beauty of the season!
