  • Allegheny County courts, many schools to close again Wednesday due to cold weather

Allegheny County Common Pleas Courts will be closed again Wednesday, as will Pittsburgh Municipal Court, due to severe and hazardous cold weather conditions, court officials said

For the second day in a row, President Judge Susan Evashavik DiLucente has ordered the closure of all divisions of the county Common Pleas Court and all Magisterial District Courts, as well as the municipal court, according to a statement Tuesday.

Arraignment Court, however, will remain open for those proceedings. Emergency protection-from-abuse orders can be obtained at Arraignment Court, 600 First Avenue, Downtown.

Allegheny County offices also will be partially closed, and non-essential county employees equipped with technology to work at home will be expected to do so, county officials said.

Also Wednesday, schools throughout the region will hold classes online or suspend school altogether as a polar vortex continues to bring single-digit temperatures.

Students at Pittsburgh Public Schools again will follow their regular class schedules for remote, synchronous learning Wednesday. The district has canceled all transportation, and staff will work remotely.

The National Weather Service has issued a cold-weather advisory for Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, east-central Ohio and northern West Virginia due to low temperatures and below-zero wind-chill temperatures.

The NWS forecast for Wednesday calls for scattered snow showers between 3-8 p.m. with about a half-inch of accumulation. The weather service predicts a high temperature of 13 degrees and wind-chill temperatures as low as -14 degrees.

The high temperature for Wednesday is expected to hit 12 degrees, with wind-chill values as low as -16 degrees, before falling to a low of 4 degrees at night.

Wind chills from 15 to 20 degrees below zero are dangerously low, causing frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and hypothermia with prolonged exposure, the NWS said in its advisory.

People who must go outside are urged to use caution and wear appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible, the NWS said.

Temperatures in the region are expected to rise somewhat Thursday, with a high of 26 degrees and a low Thursday night around 15 degrees, according to the weather service.

Jillian Forstadt of WESA contributed to this report.

Allegheny County courts, many schools to close again Wednesday due to cold weather

Due to the frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills forecasted for Wednesday, many schools and courts in Allegheny County will be closed once again. The extreme cold poses a significant risk to students, staff, and residents, prompting officials to prioritize safety and well-being.

Parents are encouraged to stay updated on school closures and delays through their school district’s communication channels. Additionally, individuals with court appearances scheduled for Wednesday are advised to contact the appropriate courthouse for further instructions.

While the closures may disrupt schedules and routines, the safety of students and employees remains the top priority. It is important for everyone to take precautions in this severe weather and stay warm indoors. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay informed.

  • NYT ā€˜Connectionsā€™ Hints And Answers For Wednesday, January 22

Looking for Tuesdayā€™s Connections hints and answers instead? You can find them here:

ForbesNYT ā€˜Connectionsā€™ Hints And Answers For Tuesday, January 21

Hey, everyone! Hope your week is going as smoothly as possible.

Being a normal human being, I’ve accumulated a few scars in my time on this planet. A few from surgeries, one from an afore-mentioned oyster-shucking mishap and another from trying to hug the TV when I was a toddler.

I wear those scars mostly with pride. They’re part of me and my weird journey on this rock.

All of this is to say that I really admire kintsugi, the beautiful Japanese art of repairing damaged ceramics with a lacquer that’s often mixed with gold powder. The idea is to treat damage as part of an item’s story instead of something that should be masked.

I absolutely connect with that concept. Imperfections are something that we should embrace, because they help make us more interesting.

Anyway, before we get going, Iā€™ve started a discussion group for Connections and this column on Discord. You can chat about each game (and other topics) with me and other folks. Iā€™m always interested to find out how other people approach the game, so join us! Itā€™s fun.

Itā€™s also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions that I mess something up.

Todayā€™s NYT Connections hints and answers for Wednesday, January 22, are coming right up.

    How To Play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

Youā€™re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.

Thereā€™s only one solution for each puzzle, and youā€™ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and youā€™re incorrect, youā€™ll lose a life. If youā€™re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that youā€™re one word away from getting it right, but youā€™ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, itā€™s game over. Letā€™s make sure that doesnā€™t happen with the help of some hints, and, if youā€™re really struggling, todayā€™s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, itā€™s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publicationā€™s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.

Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my hints for each grid via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

    What Are Todayā€™s Connections Hints?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of todayā€™s Connections groups, Iā€™ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them.

    Todayā€™s 16 words are…

    • BOXER
    • DITCH
    • BATTER
    • LAB
    • CHIN
    • JUDGE
    • PIT
    • LAWYER
    • LECTURE
    • HOLE
    • WIZARD
    • DISCUSSION
    • TRENCH
    • BOTTOMS
    • SEMINAR
    • MONK

And the hints for todayā€™s Connections groups are:

    • Yellow group ā€” educational settings
    • Green group ā€” like a chasm
    • Blue group ā€” dressed to impress
    • Purple group ā€” “held” and “screw” would fit in here

    What Are Todayā€™s Connections Groups?

    Need some extra help?

Be warned: weā€™re starting to get into spoiler territory.

    Todayā€™s Connections groups are…

    • Yellow group ā€” types of academic courses
    • Green group ā€” results of some digging
    • Blue group ā€” ones wearing robes
    • Purple group ā€” ____ up

    What Are Todayā€™s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Donā€™t scroll any further down the page until youā€™re ready to find out todayā€™s Connections answers.

    This is your final warning!

    Todayā€™s Connections answers are…

    • Yellow group ā€” types of academic courses (DISCUSSION, LAB, LECTURE, SEMINAR)
    • Green group ā€” results of some digging (DITCH, HOLE, PIT, TRENCH)
    • Blue group ā€” ones wearing robes (BOXER, JUDGE, MONK, WIZARD)
    • Purple group ā€” ____ up (BATTER, BOTTOMS, CHIN, LAWYER)

I’ve no idea what my record streak of perfect games is, but seven is the best I remember. My overall streak is up to 10 as well. Here’s how I fared:

I spent far, far too long staring at BOXER, LAB and PIT, trying to convince myself that this must be three-quarters of a group of dog breeds, but nothing else made sense with them.

I eventually figured out that LAB had to go with the rest of the yellows. That meant PIT had to be one of the greens too.

It took me more than a few moments to shake the idea that BOTTOMS could only be referring to “bell bottoms.ā€ Once I clicked on that, BATTER and CHIN ā€” the three remaining words that weren’t job titles ā€” it only took me a moment to figure out the purple connection and submit that.

BATTER up is a baseball reference and CHIN up is both an exercise and a way of telling someone to not get disheartened by something. BOTTOMS up refers to tipping the bottom part of a glass upward to finish a drink. And LAWYER up means to get yourself a lawyer, because youā€™re probably being taken to court.

I didn’t clock the blue connection, but I probably should have. More jobs should require people to wear robes, in all honesty.

Thatā€™s all there is to it for todayā€™s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Thursdayā€™s game if you need them.

P.S. Here’s another cut from my mega playlist, a little midweek jolt for you. “Steady, As She Goes” is a spiky number from The Raconteurs, one of Jack White’s many projects. There’s a nice, danceable groove to it:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Call someone you love!

In light of inclement weather conditions, some school districts, including San Antonio ISD, have made the decision to remain closed on Wednesday. This closure is being implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff as they navigate potentially hazardous road conditions. It is important for families to stay informed about updates from their respective school districts and to prioritize safety during this time. Our thoughts are with those affected by the weather, and we hope for a swift return to normalcy.

  • Western Pennsylvania school closures, delays: Wednesday, Jan. 22

Western Pa. school closures: Many schools closed Wednesday as frigid temperatures continue

CURRENTLY IS THE FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURE IN WASHINGTON. NOW, AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE NIGHT TONIGHT, TEMPERATURES WILL KEEP DROPPING OFF AND BY THE TIME WE GET TO TOMORROW MORNING, THE AIR TEMPERATURE LIKELY ABOUT EIGHT DEGREES BELOW ZERO. WIND CHILLS, THOUGH BETWEEN 10 AND 20 BELOW AND IN THE LOWER HIGHLANDS ON THE RIDGE TOPS COULD BE AS COLD AS 30 BELOW ZERO. THEN THROUGH THE DAY TOMORROW, JUST LIKE TODAY, IMPROVING CONDITIONS, WIND CHILLS GET BACK TOWARD ZERO THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. AND THEN ONE MORE VERY COLD DAY IN THE STRETCH IN THE MORNING BEFORE WE SEE IMPROVEMENT. SO AGAIN, WEā€™LL START AT EIGHT BELOW. WEā€™LL FINISH AT 15 TOMORROW. WEā€™LL START AT NINE ON THURSDAY AS A LOT OF KIDS LIKELY HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL, ITā€™S STILL GOING TO BE A COLD START. WIND CHILLS GENERALLY BETWEEN 0 AND -10. AGAIN, NOT AS COLD AS WE HAVE BEEN, BUT STILL COLD ENOUGH. ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE TO HEAD OUT THE DOOR IN THE MORNING, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WE SEE GREAT IMPROVEMENT. 24 ON FRIDAY WILL START AT 1230 FOR US ON SATURDAY, WITH MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES. WEā€™RE ALSO WATCHING A QUICK BURST OF SNOW THATā€™S CURRENTLY MOVING THROUGH THE AREA THROUGH WASHINGTON, ALLEGHENY, BUTLER, ARMSTRONG COUNTIES, MOVING INTO WESTERN WESTMORELAND COUNTY. NOW THIS WILL KEEP SLIDING EASTWARD AND COULD DROP AGAIN. A QUICK COATING TO A HALF AN INCH OF SNOW. NOT A MAJOR PROBLEM, BUT BE AWARE THERE COULD BE SOME SLICK SPOTS, ESPECIALLY ON ROADS AS THIS MOVES THROUGH NEXT WEEK. SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT FROM WHERE WE HAVE BEEN 34 YOUR HIGH TEMPERATURE ON SUNDAY. AS WE FINALLY BREAK. FREEZING A SMALL DIP ON MONDAY AT 30 AND THEN BACK ABOVE FREEZING TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY WITH LOWS GENERALLY IN THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 20S AS WE HEAD INTO NEXT WEEK. SO BASICALLY, THE BACK PART OF YOUR 4-DAY PLUS 4 MORE

  • Snow and sleet continues, widespread travel impacts through Wednesday

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Heavy snow and sleet has led to snow covered roads and impressive snow totals in the area.

Weā€™ve already picked up on multiple locations in Horry County with 5 to 6 inches of snow overnight as a sleet continues to mix in early this morning.

    SEND US YOUR WEATHER PHOTOS/VIDEOS

A WINTER STORM WARNING – The WINTER STORM WARNING continues for the entire area. Snow and sleet continues through the early morning hours today before we shut things off just before sunrise this morning. When all is said and done, expect most of Horry and Georgetown County to see 4ā€³ – 6ā€³ of snow with isolated higher totals possible.

    Heavy snow will continue overnight
    Heavy snow will continue overnight(WMBF)

Temperatures are bitterly cold this morning with many of us sitting in the low-mid 20s. When you factor in the wind, the wind chill is in the single digits and teens out there this morning. Factor in the cold with less traveled roads overnight and itā€™s an absolute mess on the roads this morning. We continue to recommend you stay off the roads today until we see major improvements.

Highs today will only reach the upper 20s. A wind chill will likely be in the teens through...
Highs today will only reach the upper 20s. A wind chill will likely be in the teens through the entire day today.(WMBF)

Highs today will remain cold and only climb into the upper 20s thanks to the snow pack on the ground. Even with the return of sunshine, wind chills throughout the day will make it feel like the teens at best. While you spend time outside playing in the snow with the kids, make sure you are bundled up for the dangerously cold temperatures.

    TRAVEL IMPACTS

As mentioned above, travel is not advised today. Roads have become less traveled overnight and have frozen up in many spots. The layer of sleet this morning has actually hurt things more than helped. Travel is expected to remain treacherous through most of the day. Hang tight as the crews continue to work diligently on the roads.

Please stay home today. Travel is not recommended and we're looking at widespread issues from...
Please stay home today. Travel is not recommended and we’re looking at widespread issues from the snow and sleet overnight.(WMBF)

With temperatures expected to stay below freezing today, we donā€™t anticipate any melting. Anything that does slush up from travel today will refreeze tonight as temperatures fall into the teens overnight.

    WHEN DO WE WARM UP?

Itā€™s going to be a slow process but we should see temperatures climb a couple degrees above freezing on Thursday afternoon. Despite a cold start, travel and warmer than freezing temperatures will allow for roads to improve by the end of the week. Weā€™re still holding onto an isolated shower for Thursdayā€™s forecast. At this point, any rain chance would be light and mainly in the form of a drizzle. Weā€™ll need to keep an eye on the timing in case temperatures are still near or below freezing.

Temperatures will warm up as we head into the weekend and expect travel conditions to improve...
Temperatures will warm up as we head into the weekend and expect travel conditions to improve by the end of the week.(WMBF)

Mornings will remain cold with temperatures in the 20s through the upcoming weekend. Afternoon temperatures will return to the 40s by Friday and slowly climb back into the upper 40s and lower 50s by Sunday afternoon.

As winter weather persists, snow and sleet are expected to continue across much of the country, leading to widespread travel impacts through Wednesday.

With icy roads, reduced visibility, and possible flight delays, travelers are advised to exercise caution and plan accordingly. Road crews are working around the clock to clear highways and streets, but conditions may still be treacherous.

If you must travel, make sure to check road conditions and weather updates before heading out. Allow for extra travel time and drive slowly to ensure your safety and the safety of others.

Stay warm and stay safe as we weather this winter storm together. Let’s all do our part to minimize the impacts of this wintry weather and keep our communities safe.
