10 Best Movies and Shows to Watch on Netflix on New Year’s Day (and Weekend)

Happy new year! Congrats, we made it to another January! Twelve whole months lie before us, sure to be packed with triumphs, disappointments, and surprises both good and bad, so why not use this first weekend of the year to get ready for a new and unpredictable chapter in the story of your life?

When embarking on a journey of any kind, it’s always good to look for inspiration from people who have done it before. So, as you take your first wobbly steps into 2025, why not stream a movie to help you with a classic new year’s resolution, a few movies that variously dramatize the bittersweet joy of turning a new leaf, or a series that’s all about empowering yourself to make choices — however small — that can change your life for the better. Have a nice stream, and happy new year!

But first, what’s new on Netflix?

A room with a view — of a cutthroat landscape. Selling the City, a new real-estate docu-soap from the creators of Selling Sunset, is here to draw you into the drama of luxury real estate in New York. Looking for a different listing? Defy mortality with Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever. The new documentary by Chris Smith (Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened) examines the controversial practices one man has adopted in his quest to stay young forever. Don’t want to sip from that fountain of youth? Try a different kind of time warp with a spin of Interstellar, Christopher Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi epic about a group of scientists (led by Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway) who travel through a wormhole.

If you have just a night …

Listen to your gut. If you’ve set a resolution to change your eating habits in 2025, you can inform your approach to nutrition with a stream of Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut. Anjali Nayar’s 2024 documentary puts the spotlight on the gut microbiome, with input from a panel of experts about the importance of maintaining a diverse diet and how gut health impacts our bodies on a greater scale.

If you have a whole day …

Start over. New beginnings can be difficult, but you can ease into this one with a three-movie mini-marathon that honors the courage it takes to turn the page. Start with a dramedy that recognizes that beginnings come out of endings: In Dan Levy’s directorial debut, 2023’s Good Grief, he stars as a man mourning his late husband with the support of his two best friends (Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel). Follow it with a romantic drama from last year, Justin Baldoni’s It Ends With Us, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestseller about breaking toxic cycles and patterns; Blake Lively anchors a tortured love triangle opposite Baldoni and Brandon Sklenar. Finally, lighten things up with a comedy about questioning everything you’ve always known and stepping into a future that breaks from the past. That’s right! Greta Gerwig’s 2023 smash Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the beloved fashion doll and Ryan Gosling as (just) Ken, is here to guide you to your new start!

If you have the entire weekend …

Do more than a makeover. Queer Eye’s Fab Five specialize in delivering fresh starts for deserving heroes, and you can sample all nine seasons (the latest of which dropped in December) to inspire your own new-year make-better. Take some tips from food expert Antoni Porowski, fashion expert Tan France, culture and lifestyle expert Karamo Brown, grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness, and design experts Bobby Berk (Seasons 1–8) and Jeremiah Brent (Season 9) — and step into 2025 with confidence.

Don’t forget, you have one last chance …

… to cast a spell. You have less than two weeks to make your way through Sera Gamble and John McNamara’s The Magicians, which ran from 2015 to 2020. Based on Lev Grossman’s trilogy of novels, the series revolves around a grad student (Jason Ralph) who enrolls in a school of magic, where he discovers that the curriculum is more dangerous than he ever guessed. Stream all five seasons before it disappears.

Bill Murray Joining Blood Brothers For Sold-Out Shows At Thalia Hall This Weekend

PILSEN — Award-winning blues duo the Blood Brothers are welcoming a third rocker, actor Bill Murray, for two sold-out shows at Pilsen’s Thalia Hall next month.

The Chicagoland native will join Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Thalia Hall, 1807 S. Allport St. Advance tickets sold out online, but a limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

The Chicago shows kick off a short national tour for “Bill Murray and His Blood Brothers,” which runs through Feb. 15 and includes stops in San Francisco, Atlanta and New York City.

The Blood Brothers were introduced to the Murray family through comic and blues musician Chris “BadNews” Barnes, who was roommates with Murray’s younger brother John, the Sun-Times reported. John Murray began following the Blood Brothers’ career and suggested to his brother Bill that the band play their Caddyshack Charity Gold Tournament in Florida in April.

It was the beginning of “a fast friendship,” per the Sun-Times.

Murray and the Blood Brothers previously performed at the Big Blues Blender in Las Vegas in September and the Intrepid Artists’ 30th anniversary party in Charlotte in October.

Like Murray, Blood Brother Albert Castiglia also has Chicago ties; he lived in the city in the ’90s, according to the Sun-Times.

Severe Weather Alert: Tornado Risk in New Orleans This Weekend

New Orleans residents are being urged to stay vigilant and prepare for potential severe weather this weekend, as meteorologists are predicting a heightened risk of tornadoes in the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather alert for New Orleans and surrounding areas, warning of strong thunderstorms and the possibility of tornadoes. The risk is particularly high on Saturday and Sunday, with a combination of warm, moist air and a strong cold front expected to create unstable atmospheric conditions.

Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and have a plan in place in case of severe weather. This includes knowing where to seek shelter in the event of a tornado, such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest level of a building.

It is also important to secure any loose outdoor objects, such as patio furniture, that could become projectiles in high winds. Driving during severe weather should be avoided if possible, as strong winds and heavy rain can make road conditions dangerous.

In addition to tornadoes, the severe weather forecast for New Orleans this weekend also includes the possibility of damaging winds, hail, and flash flooding. It is crucial for residents to take these warnings seriously and be prepared for any potential emergencies.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the weekend approaches. In the meantime, residents are urged to stay informed, stay safe, and be prepared for severe weather conditions in New Orleans this weekend.

No Apple TV Plus? No Worries: You Can Stream It for Free This Weekend

For anyone who hasn’t yet seen Apple’s original series like Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Severance and The Morning Show, you may want to reconsider your weekend plans.

The company announced on Monday that it’s offering free streaming of its original series and films on Apple TV Plus on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 4 and Jan. 5, with no required subscription. In a post shared on the X social media site, the Apple TV Plus account said: “This weekend, see for yourself.”

It’s possible Apple’s “weekend” may start on the early side. A separate press release from Apple on Monday gives the dates as Jan. 3-5 (even though the accompanying video says Jan. 4-5). So it seems the free showings may start at some point on Friday, possibly late in the day.

That followed a series of earlier posts that urged people to “save the date” and “stay tuned” in reference to the same dates.

This move is likely part of an effort to attract more subscribers to its streaming platform in a market still crowded with competitors including Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Peacock and Max. Industry watchers for months have been predicting a shakeout and consolidation of streaming options.

Though Apple has never offered a full weekend of open access to Apple TV Plus before, it does occasionally provide free streaming of select content, such as the first episodes of some original series.

The company is also promoting a seven-day free trial for new subscribers, as well as extended trials with purchases of select hardware products. Subscriptions start at $10 a month.

Apple could be teasing the promotion ahead of new shows, too. It revealed its 2024 lineup in early February.

Are you feeling left out because you don’t have an Apple TV Plus subscription? No worries, because this weekend you can stream it for free! That’s right, Apple is offering a special promotion where you can access all of their exclusive content without having to pay a cent.

Whether you’re dying to watch the latest episodes of “Ted Lasso” or catch up on the critically acclaimed “The Morning Show,” now is your chance to binge-watch to your heart’s content. And with a variety of genres and shows to choose from, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

So don’t miss out on this limited-time opportunity to experience Apple TV Plus for free. Grab your popcorn, cozy up on the couch, and start streaming this weekend!

Apple TV+ Sets Free Streaming Weekend In January

Apple will offer streaming service Apple TV+ for free during the first weekend of January in a global promotion.

The streaming service will be free January 3 to 5 on any device where Apple TV+ is available, to anyone with an Apple ID. The service normally costs $9.99 a month on a stand-alone basis, and Apple also bundles it in with music, video games, cloud storage and other services.

The free weekend coincides with the recent arrivals of fresh seasons of Bad Sisters and Shrinking, whose final episodes appeared earlier this month. Sci-fi series Silo’s current season will be ongoing at the time of the promotion, and a key upcoming title that will likely be plugged during the free weekend is Severance, whose second season is due on January 17.

The move is reminiscent of free weekends offered by premium cable networks during the heyday of cable TV. Other subscription streaming outlets, including Netflix, have also mounted similar free campaigns in more recent times.

Apple TV+ launched in November 2019. Apple has never disclosed its subscriber numbers, preferring instead to report metrics for its entire services division. In the most recent fiscal year, services revenue represented about one-quarter of the overall total, but it has been growing steadily. The company hit $25 billion in services revenue for the first time in the quarter ending September 30, with gross margins of 74%, far higher than the overall profit margin of 46%.

In addition to feeding its broader services business, Apple TV+ also is a driver of viewing on Apple TV, the company’s longtime hub for streaming. Even without an Apple TV+ subscription, viewers can engage with rental, sell-through or subscription offerings on Apple TV. The company also has offered select sports programming in front of the pay wall on Apple TV as it has invested in those live rights.

Apple TV+ Sets Free Streaming Weekend In January

Good news for Apple TV+ subscribers and non-subscribers alike! Apple has announced a special free streaming weekend for its streaming service, Apple TV+, set to take place in January.

From January 15th to January 17th, viewers will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the exclusive content available on Apple TV+ without having to pay for a subscription. This includes hit shows like “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Dickinson,” as well as movies like “Greyhound” and “Palmer.”

This free streaming weekend is the perfect opportunity for those who have been curious about Apple TV+ but haven’t yet taken the plunge to see what all the buzz is about. With a wide variety of original programming spanning multiple genres, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

So mark your calendars for January 15th to January 17th and get ready to binge-watch some of the best content that Apple TV+ has to offer. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to experience the magic of Apple TV+ for free!

Trinidad and Tobago declares state of emergency after weekend of violence | Global development

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has declared a state of emergency after a weekend of violence in the Caribbean dual-island nation took the number of murders this year to 623.

Five men were shot overnight in an estate on the outskirts of the capital, Port of Spain, and a 57-year-old woman was shot dead on Friday as she collected her teenage son from hospital in San Fernando.

In a population of 1.5 million, the unprecedented tally for 2024 makes Trinidad and Tobago one of the most violent countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Under the emergency powers announced by the office of the prime minister, Keith Rowley, the police and army have widespread authority to detain individuals without charge and search properties without warrants.

In a statement, Rowley said he was disappointed in the murder tally for 2024 and appealed to the police to use their new powers to make life “uncomfortable” for criminals.

At a press conference in Port of Spain, at which Rowley’s absence was criticised by local media, the attorney general, Stuart Young, said there would be no public curfew imposed at this time.

Young said the measures had been introduced as a result of a week of “brazen acts” by criminals in the country and that there was an expectation of a wave of reprisal attacks at a “scale so extensive that it endangers public safety”.

He said there were “limited assurances” he could give to a concerned public, adding: “What we are faced with was heightened criminal activity with the use of high-velocity assault weapons in reprisal attacks between gangs.

“It’s not about culling the homicide rate, it’s about expecting brazen acts which are going to endanger the public,” he said, although he admitted that the past 10 years of the government’s tenure had seen crime rates spiral upwards.

The president, Christine Kangaloo, said in a proclamation: “I am satisfied that a public emergency has risen as a result of the occurrence of action that has been taken or is immediately threatened by a person, of such a nature and on so extensive a scale, as to be likely to endanger the public safety.”

An estimated 42.6% of the killings are gang-related, and almost all are linked to organised crime, according to the police.

The last time state of emergency declared in Trinidad and Tobago was in 2021 to allow for restrictions during the Covid pandemic.

Over the weekend, Trinidad and Tobago was rocked by a wave of violence that has prompted the government to declare a state of emergency. The Caribbean nation has been plagued by escalating crime rates in recent years, with gang violence and drug-related crimes becoming increasingly prevalent.

The state of emergency was declared in response to a series of shootings and violent incidents that left several people dead and many others injured. The government has deployed additional security forces to the affected areas in an effort to restore peace and order.

Prime Minister Keith Rowley has called on the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to remain calm and cooperate with authorities during this challenging time. He has also vowed to take decisive action to address the root causes of the violence and ensure the safety of all residents.

The declaration of a state of emergency highlights the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to the crime problem in Trinidad and Tobago. It is crucial for the government to work closely with communities, civil society organizations, and international partners to address the underlying issues that contribute to violence and insecurity.

As the nation grapples with this crisis, it is essential for all stakeholders to come together and work towards sustainable solutions that will promote peace, stability, and development in Trinidad and Tobago. Only through collective action and strong leadership can the country overcome the challenges it faces and build a brighter future for its citizens.

This past weekend felt like a preview of spring, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. However, the mild weather also brought with it more rain showers, adding to the already wet conditions in many areas.

Despite the rain, many people took advantage of the pleasant temperatures to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Parks and outdoor spaces were bustling with activity as families and friends gathered to soak up the sunshine and embrace the spring-like weather.

The warmer temperatures also brought a sense of renewal and rejuvenation after a long and cold winter. People were seen shedding their heavy winter coats and boots in favor of lighter jackets and sneakers, eager to embrace the change in seasons.

As we move further into spring, we can expect more fluctuations in the weather, with warm temperatures interspersed with rainy days. But for now, let’s enjoy the beauty of nature awakening from its winter slumber and the promise of brighter days ahead.
