Where Tommy Robinson and counter protest will take place in London this weekend
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.
Police will increase their presence across the Capital this weekend as protests in support of and against Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is set to take place on Saturday.
A protest organised under the name ‘Stop the Isolation’ or ‘Unite the Kingdom’ is countering Robinson’s arrest, after he was sentenced to 18 months in prison in October for breaching a High Court injunction made in 2021.
He admitted 10 breaches of the order, which barred him from repeating libellous allegations against a Syrian refugee.
Meanwhile, Stand Up To Racism have organised a counter-demonstration. Co-convenor Weyman Bennett said: “We saw the power of mobilising against the far right in response to last summer’s racist riots.
“We must bring that anti-racist spirit onto the streets of London and reject the politics of hate.”
A protest in support of Tommy Robinson will form up right outside Waterloo Station. (Met Police) A protest organised under the name ‘Stop the Isolation’ or ‘Unite the Kingdom’, in support of Robinson, will form up in Sandell Street and Cornwall Road, off Waterloo Road outside Waterloo Station, from midday.
The march will continue to Whitehall via Westminster Bridge, where a static assembly will take place at Parliament Square.
The map of the protest for Tommy Robinson route (Met Police) Meanwhile, Stand Up To Racism have organised a counter-protest which will form up in St James’s Street, south of Piccadilly Circus, from 11.30am.
The march will also go to Whitehall, via Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket, assembling at the Trafalgar Square end of Whitehall.
Stand Up To Racism will form up on St James’s Street near Piccadilly Circus (Met Police) Met Police will restrict access to the middle of Whitehall in order to keep both groups apart and have encouraged people not involved in the protests to seek alternative routes between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.
The restrictions intend to keep the clashing protests apart, as they will convene at opposite ends of Whitehall.
The Stand Up To Racism route, mapped (Met Police) The Tommy Robinson march will end between the Cenotaph and Parliament Square, while the Stand Up To Racism demonstration will finish towards the northern end of Whitehall.
Met Police Commander Louise Puddefoot, who is in charge of the policing operation, said: “We have officers deployed in significant numbers to provide reassurance to the wider community, and to give us the capability to intervene swiftly and decisively if incidents of crime or disorder occur.
The Tommy Robinson rally will conclude between the Cenotaph and Parliament Square (Met Police) “Decisions on our policing style at protests, including the types of uniform worn by officers and the protective equipment available to them, are taken on a case by case basis. It allows us to be ready to respond quickly and decisively where we need to.
Ms Puddefoot continued that their assessment for the protests, based on the information available to the force, meant that an “additional level of preparedness is required.”
Stand Up To Racism’s march will conclude between towards the top of Whitehall (Met Police) She said that officer uniforms and protective kit are there to “ensure all involved can exercise their right to protest peacefully, without causing serious disruption to the life of the wider community and without risking the disorder that could take place if groups with opposing views come together.”
This weekend, the controversial figure Tommy Robinson and his supporters will be holding a rally in London. The exact location has not been disclosed, but it is expected to be in a central area of the city.In response to this rally, a counter protest is also being organized by various groups and individuals who oppose Robinson’s views and rhetoric. The counter protest will be taking place in close proximity to where Robinson and his supporters are gathering.
The clash between these two groups is expected to draw a large crowd and potentially lead to tensions and confrontations. Police presence will likely be heightened in the area to ensure the safety of all those involved.
Stay tuned for updates on the location of both events and any developments that may occur during the weekend.

#bank #holiday #weekend #Irish #TimesGunners considering bold bid for €65m-rated striker this weekend after Ollie Watkins bid rejected
Arsenal are still keen to sign a new striker before the transfer window closes and could make a late move for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, TEAMtalk understands.
The Gunners submitted a bid of around £40m for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins earlier this week, which was instantly rejected, and he won’t be joining the London side this window.
Aston Villa are on the verge of selling Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, who has already completed a medical ahead of the move, and Unai Emery has no intention of allowing his first-choice striker Watkins to leave too.
Unai Emery, meanwhile, has confirmed that Watkins isn’t pushing to leave Aston Villa. “Some players prefer to leave and some players accept to stay here and commit to Aston Villa and compete for our challenges. One of them is Ollie Watkins,” Emery said in a press conference.
Mikel Arteta’s priority ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline is to sign a new striker to cover for Gabriel Jesus, who is sidelined with an injury.
Sources state that Juventus striker Vlahovic is among Arsenal’s top targets. A final decision on whether to bid hasn’t been made, but the Gunners are considering a bid over the weekend.
The 25-year-old is open to a new challenge in the Premier League. He has scored seven goals in 18 Serie A appearances this season and has big admirers at the Emirates.

Arsenal face hurdles in Dusan Vlahovic pursuit
A deal for Vlahovic won’t be straightforward, however. As we have previously reported, Juventus would need to sign another striker before sanctioning his exit.
The Turin-based club are now running out of time to sign a new centre-forward, even though they have already signed one new one – Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain.
Juventus manager Thiago Motta is not convinced that Kolo Muani can be relied upon as Juventus’ main striker in both the Serie A and Champions League, with back-up option Arkadiusz Milik currently sidelined with an injury.
In the event that Juventus do sign another new forward, sources suggest that they could consider selling Vlahovic for slightly less than his initial €65m (£54.4m, $67.4m) price tag.
RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko remains high on Arsenal’s shortlist but the German side are very reluctant to allow him to leave mid-season.
Sesko, 21, could be a viable target for Arsenal in the summer but it would take a mega-money bid to get him before the transfer window closes.
Vlahovic, however, is a player to keep a close eye on in the coming days.

Arsenal round-up: Bologna forward linked / Cunha competition
Meanwhile, recent reports have claimed that Arsenal have shown interest in Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui.
Retegui has been referred to as the “hot striker” in Italian football at the moment, with three goals more (16) than any other Serie A player this term.
There has been no indication yet as to what fee Atalanta could consider selling him for, but reports suggest Arsenal are keeping tabs on his situation.
In other news, reports claim that Aston Villa could rival Arsenal in the race to sign Matheus Cunha, although this is likely to be a summer saga, rather than a move happening in the next few days.
The Gunners have identified Cunha as one of their main targets to strengthen their left-wing position alongside Athletic Club’s Nico Williams.

IN FOCUS: What Dusan Vlahovic would bring to Arsenal
Towering at 1.90m tall, it’s no surprise what kind of centre-forward Dusan Vlahovic is. If it’s a target man you want, this is the kind of player you’d design.
Renowned for his strength, Vlahovic excels with his hold-up play. But he doesn’t just stop there; although he won’t drop deep too often, this is a player with good ball-carrying abilities as well, making him extremely dangerous on transition if he can pin his marker and change the direction of play.
What about his finishing, though? Despite his potential, Vlahovic hasn’t always been the most prolific frontman. His best period as a goalscorer was between 2020 and 2022, when he scored 50 goals over two seasons (he was a Fiorentina player for one-and-a-half of those, and a Juventus player for the last half).
At Juventus, he hits double figures regularly, but still hasn’t taken that next step to becoming a regular 20-goal-a-season striker.
Vlahovic is left-footed and that represents his most common way to score, significantly more so than via heading, despite his height. He isn’t just a penalty-box poacher, either; the Serbia striker is a reliable free-kick taker and is dangerous from long range.
There’s a lot to like about Vlahovic in terms of his raw traits, but in his mid-20s, he still isn’t the finished article. With a bit of refinement to his game, he could reach the next level, but he is just outside the bracket of being top-class just yet.

According to reports, Arsenal are considering making a bold bid for a €65m-rated striker this weekend after their initial offer for Ollie Watkins was rejected by Aston Villa. The Gunners are in desperate need of reinforcements up front, and have identified the unnamed striker as their top target.Despite having a strong attacking lineup, Arsenal have struggled to find a consistent goal scorer this season. With Alexandre Lacazette’s future at the club uncertain and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang not hitting top form, manager Mikel Arteta is eager to bring in a new striker to bolster his options.
The €65m-rated striker is said to be open to a move to the Emirates and could provide the goalscoring threat that Arsenal have been lacking. It is believed that negotiations between the two clubs are already underway, and a deal could be completed in the coming days.
Arsenal fans will be hoping that the Gunners can secure the signature of the talented striker, as they look to push for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

Weekend Preview: DOG MAN Expected to Debut Above $20M
The Boxoffice Podium
Forecasting the Top 3 Movies at the Domestic Box Office | January 31 – February 2, 2025
Week 5 | January 31 – February 2, 2025
1. Dog Man
Universal Pictures/Dreamworks Animation | NEW
Weekend Range: $25M – $35M
Showtime Market Share: 19%Pros
A spin-off of Dav Pilkey’s phenomenally popular juvenile book series Captain Underpants, Dog Man is the movie to beat this weekend. Our numbers are conservative, with several members in our forecasting team thinking this title can seriously overperform. A surprise overperformance above $35M isn’t off the table, but we’re currently keeping pace with our original tracking in the $25 to $35M range. With no direct family competition, Dog Man will easily finish the weekend on top. Early reviews trickling in after the film premiered at France’s Festival de l’Alpe d’Huez seem to be leaning majority positive/fresh, though this is about as review-proof as family films get. Dreamworks’ first Captain Underpants movie in 2017 earned an 87% Certified Fresh. As an added bonus, the studio is attaching a short set within the world of The Bad Guys as a prelude/ad for The Bad Guys 2 which drops in August.
Cons
Anything under a $20M opening on this one will be a disappointment, although in typical recent Dreamworks style they have outsourced the animation on Dog Man to partner studios to keep costs down. Plushes, popcorn buckets, and soda toppers are just some of the merch theater chains like Regal have in store with the anticipated family onslaught, but is Dog Man too much of an ancillary property? Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie took in less than $100M stateside ($73.9M) when it opened in June 2017, so to expect Dog Man to be the Minions to Captain Underpants‘ Despicable Me might be optimistic.
2. Companion
Warner Bros. Pictures | NEW
Weekend Range: $8M – $12M
Showtime Market Share: 12%Pros
The AI-run-amok genre continues to expand with Companion, a film in which a companion sex robot gains sentience. Zach Cregger of the sleeper hit Barbarian flexes his producer muscles on this one, while star Sophie Thatcher continues to evolve into the scream queen du jour (The Boogeyman, Maxxxine, Heretic). Reviews for this title are pristine at a current 94% on RT, which gives it a lot of momentum with the horror crowd.
Cons
Companion could conceivably overperform as high as $15M, but we’re being conservative in our forecast to keep pace with recent horror performances. If word of mouth delivers, this one can leg out in the coming weeks, but Presence had 90% RT going into last weekend and failed to ignite. A good comp would be 2015’s experimental pleasure robot thriller Ex Machina, although that one built up slow with two weeks of limited platforming before going wide to ultimately do $25.4M domestic. Based on trailers Companion appears to have more levity and may be more of a crowd pleaser.
TOSS UP
3. Mufasa: The Lion King
Walt Disney Pictures | Week 7
Weekend Range: $4M – $6M
Showtime Market Share: 8%Pros
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King continues to leg it out into the bleak January months, collecting $8.59M to take the #2 spot this past weekend. That was only a 29% drop from Frame 5, with the current domestic total at $220.96M and $627.99M globally. We think Mufasa can stay in the top three, but it’s really down to how much business it can keep with new competition from Dog Man.
Cons
The family box office is going to the dogs. Dreamworks’ Dog Man is looking to not only usurp the family audience this frame but likely well into spring when Disney’s Snow White enters the woods. The lions have had their day and will head onto streaming shortly. If Dog Man overperforms this weekend, we think Flight Risk can sneak up to take third place.
3. Flight Risk
Lionsgate | Week 2
Weekend Range: $4M – $6M
Showtime Market Share: 9%Pros
Lionsgate’s B-movie programmer Flight Risk took the top spot last week with $11.58M, down from the initial $12M estimates. Hopefully it can use some of that #1 movie in America momentum to earn solid in Frame 2. Right now it’s a coin toss as to whether this or Mufasa will take third place.
Cons
It’s more than fair to say that both director Mel Gibson and star Mark Wahlberg have seen better days in their careers. A “C” CinemaScore plus 25% Rotten Tomatoes critical means the word is out and it is not complimentary.
This weekend is shaping up to be an exciting one at the box office, with the highly anticipated animated film DOG MAN expected to debut above $20 million. Based on the popular children’s book series by Dav Pilkey, DOG MAN follows the adventures of a half-dog, half-man superhero as he fights crime and saves the day. With its charming characters, witty humor, and heartwarming story, DOG MAN has been generating buzz among audiences of all ages. Early tracking numbers suggest that the film will easily surpass the $20 million mark in its opening weekend, making it a strong contender at the box office.
In addition to DOG MAN, there are several other films hitting theaters this weekend, including the action-packed thriller “The Protégé” starring Maggie Q and Michael Keaton, and the horror film “Candyman” directed by Nia DaCosta.
Whether you’re a fan of animated adventures, thrilling action, or spine-tingling horror, there’s something for everyone at the box office this weekend. So grab your popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show!

Dalton Knecht. Photo via Los Angeles Lakers on X (Twitter) Former Tennessee wing and current Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht has been named to the player pool for the 2025 NBA Rising Stars Challenge
The Rising Stars Challenge will take place on the Friday before the NBA All-Star game as four teams comprised of the league’s best young talent will compete in a mini-tournament. Three of the teams will be made up of rookies and sophomores from the league while the fourth team is made up of G-League Players.
The winner of the mini-tournament will then move on to All-Star Sunday.
Rather than the traditional East vs West format, the NBA is turning to another mini-tournament with its biggest stars. The NBA will have 24 traditional All-Star selections who will be split up into three teams. The fourth team in the mini-tournament on Sunday will be the winner of the Rising Stars Challenge mini-tournament.
WNBA legend and former Lady Vols great Candace Parker will serve as the honorary GM for the Rising Stars Challenge winner.
It may be a little confusing for some, so let’s look at it from strictly a Dalton Knecht perspective.
Knecht is one of 25 players available to be drafted in the Rising Stars Challenge and will be selected to a team for the RSC mini-tournament. Two of Knecht’s opponents will be teams consisting of first- and second-year NBA players while the third is made up of G-League players.
Let’s say Knecht’s team wins the Rising Stars Challenge event on Friday night. His group, “Team Candace” as it will be called, will then move on to Sunday to be one of the four teams in the All-Star Game tournament.
Each of the four teams will play one knockout game on Sunday to determine which two teams will advance to the final game on Sunday night. The games will be a “first to 40” scoring format.
Here’s Ernie Johnson to explain how things will work:

Back to the former Tennessee star, though.
Knecht is one of 10 NBA rookies to be selected for the 25-person player pool. There are several former SEC names that Tennessee fans might be familiar with including Trayce Jackson-Davis (brother of former Vol QB Tayven Jackson), Brandon Miller (Alabama), Cason Wallace (Kentucky), and Reed Sheppard (Kentucky).
“It means a lot, it’s a good accomplishment,” Knecht said about the selection via Lakers Nation. “At the same time, it’s just the Rising Stars game. I’m more focused on the season than anything.”
Through 45 games this season, Knecht is averaging 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists, and 20.9 minutes per game for the 26-19 Lakers. The former Vol has been fairly up and down this season but still provides a spark. In the last week alone, Knecht has games of just two and three points in addition to games of 13 points, 13 points, and 24 points.
The 2025 Rising Stars Challenge will take place at 9:00 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 14, from the Chase Center.
