  • NBA All-Star Weekend participants tracker: Rising Stars player pool revealed

NBA All-Star Weekend will feature a host of events on Feb. 14-16 in San Francisco, beginning with the Rising Stars game on Friday and culminating with the All-Star Game on Sunday night.

Last year in addition to the 3-point contest there was also a mixed 3-point competition featuring Golden State’s Steph Curry against New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, with Ionescu falling to Curry in a close match. The NBA has not yet confirmed whether there will be a rematch or some other version of the event in this year’s festivities (though Caitlin Clark will not take part, if there is).

But what we do know is that players are beginning to commit to All-Star events, and we’re keeping track of who will be involved. This story will be updated as the field develops.

    Rising Stars event

The NBA released its player pool for the Rising Stars event Tuesday, with young San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama being the clear headliner.

This event will be a four-team mini-tournament featuring young NBA players and a collection of NBA G League standouts. NBA rookies and sophomores will be drafted onto three teams on Feb. 4, with the G Leaguers making up a fourth team. The G League team will include Reed Sheppard, who was the No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft by the Houston Rockets. Sheppard is averaging 30.7 points, 8.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

The four teams, each with seven-player rosters, will compete on Friday, Feb. 14, the first night of All-Star festivities.

    Here are the players:

Rookies: Bub Carrington (Wizards), Stephon Castle (Spurs), Tristan Da Silva (Magic), Zach Edey (Grizzlies), Dalton Knecht (Lakers), Jared McCain (76ers), Yves Missi (Pelicans), Zaccharie Risacher (Hawks), Alex Sarr (Wizards), Jaylen Wells (Grizzlies).

Sophomores: Bilal Coulibaly (Wizards), Gradey Dick (Raptors), Keyonte George (Jazz), Scoot Henderson (Trail Blazers), Trayce Jackson-Davis (Warriors), Jaime Jaquez Jr. (Heat), Dereck Lively II (Mavericks), Brandon Miller (Hornets), Amen Thompson (Rockets), Cason Wallace (Thunder), Victor Wembanyama (Spurs).

NBA G League: JD Davison (Maine Celtics), Mac McClung (Osceola Magic), Bryce McGowens (Rip City Remix), Leonard Miller (Iowa Wolves), Dink Pate (Mexico City Capitanes), Reed Sheppard (Rio Grande Valley Vipers), Pat Spencer (Santa Cruz Warriors).

    Slam dunk contest

Mac McClung will return and attempt to not only defend his crown, but to become the first person to win the even three times in a row. The 6-foot-2 McClung is a unique case, as he has only played in five NBA games in four years. Last year he was allowed to compete despite spending the entire season in the G League. He is currently on a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic.

Here is the field, as reported by ESPN. It has not yet been confirmed by the NBA.

    • Mac McClung (Magic)
    • Stephon Castle (Spurs)
    • Matas Buzelis (Bulls)
    • Andre Jackson Jr. (Bucks)

    3-point contest

The participants are TBD. Damian Lillard won this event last year.

    Skills Challenge

Contestants have yet to be revealed. Last year, this was won by Team Pacers when Tyrese Haliburton made a half-court shot in the tie-breaker round.

  • Houston turns warmer and muggier for a couple of days before clear and cooler weather this weekend – Space City Weather

In brief: There’s a little something for everyone in today’s forecast. We’ve got clouds and some rain during the next couple of days before a nice stretch of sunny and low-humidity weather to take us through the weekend. Only thing to watch for is the low-end potential of some storms on Thursday afternoon.

    Wednesday

It’s a fairly dreary morning outside, with light, misty rainfall and areas of fog. This drizzle and fog may persist for much of the morning before we’re simply left with a layer of clouds. With a warmer, southeasterly flow in place we can expect temperatures to warm to about 70 degrees this afternoon, with increasing humidity levels. A chance of drizzle remains overnight, as lows only drop into the lower 60s.

NOAA storm outlook for Thursday and Thursday night.

    Thursday

This will be a fairly warm day, despite the cloudy skies, as high temperatures rise into the mid-70s with humidity to match. Some scattered showers will be possible during the morning hours, along with gusty southeasterly winds. During the afternoon, a cold front will approach the area, likely reaching Katy and Tomball an hour or two after noon. What I think we’re likely to see is a broken line of showers that may possibly fill in as it moves through Houston during the afternoon. There is a slight chance of some severe weather with the front, and this is most likely to occur as it passes to the east of the Interstate 45 corridor. This includes the potential for severe thunderstorms or damaging winds. (There is a very low-end chance of hail or a tornado). For most of us, the front should be a fairly modest event, with drier air moving in behind. Lows will drop into the low 50s on Thursday night with clearing skies.

Saturday morning looks to be the coldest of the week. (Weather Bell)

    Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Sunshine is back on the menu, along with a nice slug of drier air and sunshine. Winds from the north will be a bit gusty on Friday morning, but should back down after that. We’re looking at highs on Friday and Saturday of around 70 degrees, with temperatures at night falling into the mid- to upper-40s. Sunday will be a little warmer, with highs in the lower- to mid-70s, but still with plenty of dry air. I can’t wait to take a long bike ride and soak up some sun.

    Next week

The atmosphere turns a bit messier next week, but generally I expect we’ll see warm, partly sunny days with highs in the 70s, and nights with lows around 60 degrees. There may be some slight, daily rain chances. Some kind of front works its way toward Houston by the weekend, but an Arctic blast it will not be.

Hey Houstonians! Get ready for a brief spell of warmer and muggier weather in the next couple of days before clear and cooler conditions sweep in this weekend. According to Space City Weather, temperatures are expected to rise slightly with increased humidity, making it feel more like summer than fall.

But fear not, as relief is on the way. A cold front is set to move through the area by the weekend, bringing with it drier air and cooler temperatures. So, enjoy the warmth while it lasts, but be prepared for a refreshing change in the weather soon.

Stay tuned to Space City Weather for the latest updates and forecasts as we transition from summer to fall in the Bayou City. Stay safe and stay cool, Houston! #HoustonWeather #SpaceCityWeather #FallIsComing

  • Celtics Guard Selected For Rising Stars Battle At All-Star Weekend

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown won’t be the only Boston Celtics representatives at NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco.

Members of the Rising Stars rosters were announced Tuesday and third-year Celtics guard JD Davison made the cut. The 22-year-old will join young up-and-comers like Dalton Knecht of the Los Angeles Lakers and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs for the Feb. 14 showcasing. Davison was among 28 players chosen — 10 rookies, 10 sophomores and seven G Leaguers — to participate.

Davison, a second-round pick in the 2022 draft, has spent most of the season with Boston’s G League affiliate Maine Celtics. He’s been the third-leading scorer in the G League, so far, averaging a career-high 26.5 points on 48.3% shooting from the field with 4.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists through 15 games — impressive enough to earn some All-Star Weekend recognition, but not enough for a major call-up.

Boston hasn’t relied on Davison since drafting the Alabama product three years ago. While developmental players like Neemias Queta and Sam Hauser have escaped the G League stepping stone, Davison has remained put. He’s an explosive athletic, semi-crafty guard with an undersized 6-foot-2 frame that doesn’t help Davison’s struggles to score when given the chance to suit up for head coach Joe Mazzulla.

The Celtics are 47 games into their championship defense and have gone 3-9 in games following a win since Dec. 18. They most recently tumbled to Ime Udoka’s Houston Rockets at TD Garden on Monday night, marking the fifth Boston defeat in its last 10 games. The ongoing slump and inability to replicate last season’s success on both ends of the floor have prompted a hovering palm over the panic button — pending the team’s first red-hot run — and at the very least, a roster transaction of some sort.

    Story continues below advertisement

Jaden Springer, a non-factor who’s spent most of the campaign keeping the bench warm, has been floated as a potential trade candidate. It would help clear up $4 million off the team’s salary cap and allow the franchise to consider giving Davison a promotion. That possibility might be a bit of a stretch considering Davison has attempted only 1.4 shots in the NBA across 25 appearances in the past three years and the Celtics are in a win-now window. But there’s still a chance nonetheless.

Exciting news for Celtics fans! Celtics guard, Jaylen Brown, has been selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star Weekend. Brown has been a key player for the Celtics this season, showcasing his scoring ability and defensive prowess.

The Rising Stars Challenge features the top first and second-year players in the league, giving fans a glimpse of the future stars of the NBA. Brown’s selection is a testament to his hard work and dedication on the court.

Celtics fans can look forward to seeing Brown compete against other young talents in the league during All-Star Weekend. Make sure to tune in and support our rising star, Jaylen Brown! #Celtics #JaylenBrown #RisingStarsChallenge #NBAAllStar

  • Chilly start, but weekend warmup ahead

Video: Chilly start, but weekend warmup ahead

IT. THE START OF THE FIRST STORM. SO WE HAVEN’T HAD A LOT OF SNOW YET THIS WINTER. WE’LL SEE WHERE THE REST OF THE WINTER TAKES US. RIGHT? WE’RE ABOUT A HALF A FOOT BELOW AVERAGE IN BOSTON. WE’VE ONLY HAD 12.5IN OF SNOW THIS SEASON, AND WE’VE HAD 18IN WORCESTER SO FAR. THAT IS A GOOD FOOT BELOW NORMAL. SO SEASONS CAN START OUT SLOW AND THEN RAMP UP. BUT CERTAINLY THAT ONE WAS ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS, RIGHT? HERE’S OUR LOOK AT OUR SNOW THIS JANUARY. MOST OF IT FELL HERE WITH THAT STORM ON SUNDAY INTO MONDAY. AND SINCE THEN IT’S JUST BEEN COLD THIS ENTIRE WEEK. OUR TEMPERATURES HAVE NOT EVEN MADE IT TO FREEZING ALL WEEK LONG, BUT I THINK WE’RE GOING TO DO THAT TODAY. HOVER NEAR FREEZING TOMORROW, AND THEN LOOK, IT DOES GET A LITTLE BIT MILDER SUNDAY INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK, AND WE’LL COME UP CLOSE TO 40 DEGREES. THAT WILL DO A LITTLE BIT OF MELTING OF OUR SNOW PACK. YOU CAN SEE DOWN ALONG THE GULF COAST WHERE THEY STILL HAVE SNOW ON THE GROUND, GETTING CLOSER TO 50 DEGREES TODAY, SO THEY’LL GET SOME OF THAT MELTING IN AS WELL. BUT HERE LOCALLY, STARTING OUT REALLY CHILLY, YOU CAN SEE OUT TOWARD ORANGE AND JAFFREY. WE’RE ACTUALLY BELOW ZERO AGAIN THIS MORNING. 15 WORCESTER SINGLE DIGITS BEDFORD TO NORWOOD SITTING AT 22 IN BOSTON. SO TEMPERATURES KIND OF ALL OVER THE PLACE. THE WINDS ARE LIGHT, SO NO BIG WIND CHILLS OUT THE DOOR. AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY I THINK WE’RE LOOKING AT SUSTAINED WINDS NEAR TEN MILES PER HOUR. THEY MAKE US A LITTLE BIT HIGHER. SO NOT STRONG WINDS, BUT THEY’RE COMING FROM THE WEST AROUND THIS AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE. AND THAT WESTERLY FLOW OF CHILLY AIR OVER THE LAKES, GENERATING SOME LAKE EFFECT SNOWS. AND SOME OF THOSE BANDS, ALTHOUGH THEY’LL DRY UP BEFORE THEY GET HERE, WILL THROW A FEW CLOUDS OUR WAY THIS AFTERNOON. SO WE’LL HAVE BRIGHT SUNNY SKIES HERE THROUGH NOONTIME. CLOUDS MIX IN THIS AFTERNOON, BUT WE’RE SNEAKING UP TO THE FREEZING MARK IN BOSTON AND BEVERLY. WE’LL GET THERE IN NASHUA AS WELL. SOME SPOTS CLOSER TO 35 DEGREES ON THE SOUTH SHORE, SO DOING A LITTLE BETTER THIS AFTERNOON. THERE YOU SEE SOME OF THOSE STREAMERS WORKING ON IN WITH THE CLOUDS. AND THEN OVERNIGHT, THE SKIES CLEAR AND IT’S BACK DOWN INTO THE COLD. ANOTHER COLD NIGHT. WE COULD BE BELOW ZERO AGAIN. AND A FEW OF OUR COLDEST SUBURBS. OTHERWISE SINGLE DIGITS AND TEENS. TONIGHT YOUR SATURDAY IS BRIGHT, SUNNY. IT IS THE BRIGHTER DAY OF THE WEEKEND. BUT LOOK, IT’S STILL KIND OF CHILLY. UPPER 20S TO AROUND THE FREEZING MARK AND THAT’S THE BEST WE’RE DOING YET AGAIN TOMORROW. THINGS CHANGE ON SUNDAY. CLOUDS COME IN. WE’VE GOT THIS WEAK LITTLE CLIPPER SYSTEM MOVING ON THROUGH. IT IS STARVED FOR MOISTURE, BUT THERE COULD BE A QUICK PASSING RAIN OR SNOW SHOWER THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON, AND THEN THE SKIES WILL TEND TO BRIGHTEN LATE IN THE DAY AND WE’LL HAVE SUNSHINE TO START THE WEEK NEAR 40 DEGREES ON TUESDAY, AHEAD OF A FRONT THAT IS GOING TO KICK UP THE BREEZE. AND THEN AS THE WIND SHIFTS, IT DROPS THE COLDER AIR ON IN HERE. SO TURNING COLDER AGAIN MIDWEEK. BUT LOOK AT THAT AREA OF LOW PRESSURE THAT DEVELOPS ON THE FRONT. IT COULD SCOOT BY US WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND BRING A QUICK SHOT OF SOME ACCUMULATING SNOW. SO WE’LL SEE IF THAT PANS OUT OR NOT. NOT ALL OUR MODELS ARE SHOWING IT, BUT I’M KEEPING AN EYE ON IT. BUT IT’S DEFINITELY GOING TO GET COLDER AGAIN NEXT WEEK. AFTER A BRIEF MODERATION. OH MAN, I KNOW A BRIEF MODERATION. WELL, WE’LL TAKE WHAT WE CAN GET. TAKE WHAT WE CAN GET. IT FEELS DIFFERENT. CERTAINLY WHEN YOU STEP OUT THE DOOR, IF

As we kick off the week, it’s clear that winter is still holding on tight with chilly temperatures and brisk winds. However, fear not, because a weekend warmup is on the horizon that will have you shedding those winter layers and soaking up the sunshine.

With highs expected to climb into the 60s and even 70s in some areas, it’s the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Whether you’re planning a hike, a picnic in the park, or simply lounging in your backyard, the warmer weather will be a welcomed change from the recent chill.

So hang in there for a few more days, and get ready to bask in the sunshine and embrace the spring-like temperatures that are just around the corner. Happy weekend planning!

Scotty James has produced one of the best runs of his impressive halfpipe career, to claim the gold medal at the Laax Open in Switzerland, the tenth World Cup victory of his career and fourth win at the prestigious event.

In the best-of-two run night final, the two-time Olympic medallist opened with a score of 88.75 points, then stepped it up in the final run to put down a spectacular performance that included a massive switch frontside triple cork 1440 on his way to a huge score of 95.75.

James took the win ahead of Japanese rider Ruka Hirano’s score of 93.75, while compatriot and reigning Olympic halfpipe champion Ayumu Hirano was third with a run one score of 87.00.

“I think it might be one of the best moments of my competitive career” said the 30-year-old from Warrandyte in Victoria. “It’s always challenging to win, but this year I feel like I have been put on the ropes quite a bit from the other competitors, especially the Japanese, they are riding incredible.

“Not for a second did I think it was a done deal until the last rider went because any rider could have won.

“It’s always been a super important detail for me to spin in every direction, and try and keep a bit of soul in there with the switch McTwist at the start before it gets into a lot of spinning, really happy to get the triple in there this year as well which was a big goal of mine.

“It’s one of the best pipes in the world, there are no excuses but to go 110% on this thing, so you’ve got to bring your best if you want to stand on top, or even on the podium for that matter.”

The victory puts James move into equal first place on the World Cup standings alongside Yuto Totsuka of Japan on 230 points.

Competing in the women’s event for Australia was two-time Olympian Emily Arthur, who finished in 24th place.

American riders took the top two places in the women’s final with two-time Olympic gold medallist Chloe Kim victorious ahead of Maddie Mastro in second and Gaon Choi of Korea in third.

James will now head to Aspen, USA, to compete in the X-Games on January 23, where he will be aiming to win an incredible fourth straight and seventh career X-Games gold medal.

Silver for Danielle Scott In Season-Opening Aerials World Cup

Danielle Scott has made a great start to the FIS Aerial Skiing World Cup season with a silver medal performance at the first event of the year in Lake Placid, USA, claiming the 22nd World Cup medal of her career.

The back-to-back defending World Cup Champion performed well in all three stages of the competition, placing second in the opening qualifications, and then secured her spot in the medal round by leading the first round of finals with an impressive full-full double twisting double back somersault that scored 92.29 points.

In the super-final medal round, Scott increased her degree of difficult to perform a triple twisting double back somersault, scoring 95.17 points, falling agonisingly close to victory by the small margin of 0.35 points, giving 2022 Olympic Champion Mengtao Xu of China the gold medal on 95.52. Rounding out the podium in third with a score of 90.94 was Canadian Marion Thenault.

“Pretty stoked, it was awesome to get back in the start gate again, this year has been a pretty big ride on a rollercoaster, so grateful to just be here,” said the 34-year-old Scott from NSW, who trains in Brisbane at the Geoff Henke Olympic Winter Training Centre water jump facility.

Danielle Scott put down a big score of 95.17, 0.35 short of the winning jump,

“Today had everything weather wise, head winds to tail winds to falling snow, to everything changing on us in such small windows, very grateful and happy for my coaches for getting all the attention to detail right and trusting everything out there.

Abbey Willcox also qualified for the final in fifth place and went on to finish in eighth in the first round of finals. Missing out on the final was Airliegh Frigo in 20th and double World Champion Laura Peel in 21st.

Also competing for Australia in their World Cup debuts were Sidney Stephens in 28th, Elise Coleiro 29th and Reilly Flanagan 29th.

    Ben Tudhope Back on Top

After Saturday’s racing was cancelled due to weather, Ben Tudhope returned on Sunday to claim his first Para Snowboard SBX World Cup win of the season at Pyha in Finland.

Ben was the third fastest in qualifying and then went to win the semi and final. Canada’s Alex Massie took the silver ahead of Emanuel Perathoner, Italy, in third.

  • Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Flight Risk’ No. 1 in Glacial Weekend

Flight Risk,” an action thriller directed by Mel Gibson and starring Mark Wahlberg as a balding, unhinged pilot, landed in first place with $12 million from 3,161 North American theaters in its opening weekend.

It’s the second consecutive Lionsgate release, following “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” to debut at No. 1 as the studio takes advantage of January’s otherwise desolate box office landscape. Case in point: Second place went to Disney’s “”Mufasa” which opened six weeks ago. The “Lion King” prequel added an additional $8.7 million from 3,420 cinemas, bringing its tally to $221 million in North America and $626.7 million globally.

“Flight Risk” cost $25 million, so it’ll need to keep flying during its theatrical run. That could be challenging because critics and audiences lambasted the film, which holds a dismal 21% average on Rotten Tomatoes and lousy “C” grade on CinemaScore. This marks the first directorial effort from Gibson, whose career was derailed by several off-screen controversies, since 2016’s Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge.” Wahlberg and Gibson recently collaborated on 2022’s “Father Stu,” a faith-based drama directed and self-funded by the “Ted” star.

“Moviegoers are showing up, but they’re not impressed with the movie,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.

Another newcomer, Steven Soderbergh’s ghost thriller “Presence,” stumbled in sixth place with $3.4 million from 1,750 cinemas. The low-budget film, which Neon bought at last year’s Sundance, was better liked by critics (87% on Rotten Tomatoes) than audiences (“C+” grade on CinemaScore). Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan star in “Presence,” told from the perspective of the supernatural entity that’s haunting their new home.

A third new nationwide release, inspirational drama “Brave the Dark,” wasn’t able to crack the top 10. The latest release from “Sound of Freedom” distributor Angel Studios opened at No. 11 with a paltry $2.4 million from 2,230 locations. Moviegoers awarded an “A” grade on CinemaScore for the film, which follows a high school teacher’s efforts to help a troubled student.

“With positive word-of-mouth, inspirational dramas tend to hang around in subsequent weeks,” says Gross. “It’s an uplifting, feel-good story and audiences like it.”

Sony’s R-rated buddy comedy “One of Them Days” slid to third place with $8 million from 2,675 locations, marking a scant 32% decline from its opening. The film, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, is benefitting from positive word-of-mouth and has generated $25 million after two weekends of release.

Meanwhile, Universal and Blumhouse’s horror thriller “Wolf Man,” which also opened last weekend, tumbled to No. 7 with $2 million from 3,354 cinemas. Ticket sales cratered by 72% from the film’s already soft start, bringing its domestic total to $17.4 million. “Wolf Man” isn’t making up ground overseas, where the $25 million-budgeted movie added $3.5 million from 75 markets for a global tally of $27 million.

Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3″ remained fourth with $5.5 million in its sixth outing. The kid-friendly threequel has grossed $226 million in North America and $446 million globally, making it the highest-grossing entry in of the series, above 2020’s “Sonic” ($319 million) and the 2022 sequel “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” ($405 million).

Disney’s “Moana 2” rounded out the top five with $4.1 million, boosting its tally to $448 million after nine weeks on the big screen. The animated sequel, which originally developed as a Disney+ series, has surpassed $1 billion globally.

    More to come…

This past weekend, Mark Wahlberg’s latest action-packed thriller, “Flight Risk,” soared to the top of the box office charts, claiming the number one spot in what can only be described as a glacially slow weekend for the film industry.

Despite the lackluster competition, Wahlberg’s star power and intense performance as a daring pilot caught in a high-stakes hostage situation captivated audiences and critics alike. The film’s heart-pounding action sequences and suspenseful plot kept viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

“Flight Risk” may have faced a chilly reception from other films at the box office, but it certainly heated up the theaters with its pulse-pounding thrills and adrenaline-fueled escapades. Wahlberg once again proves why he is one of Hollywood’s most reliable action stars, delivering a performance that is sure to leave audiences wanting more.

If you’re looking for a thrilling ride that will keep you guessing until the very end, be sure to catch “Flight Risk” in theaters now. Mark Wahlberg’s latest blockbuster is sure to take you on a wild ride that you won’t soon forget.
