  • Rory McIlroy makes weekend at Desert Classic but Rahm and Hovland exit | Golf

For a spell on Friday afternoon the organisers of the Dubai Desert Classic had cause for panic. Jon Rahm had already tumbled out of the tournament after 36 holes, Viktor Hovland was heading the same way and Rory McIlroy was dangerously close to the cut line. Not for the first time at the Emirates Club, McIlroy saved the day; a birdie at the 18th meant he survived for the weekend with three shots to spare. Given McIlroy’s specialism here – he is seeking a third win in a row – a deficit of nine to the leader, Ewen Ferguson, is unlikely to faze the Northern Irishman.

Rahm’s struggles on his first start of 2025 and debut in this tournament caused widespread shock. The Spaniard’s second round of 77, including two double bogeys, contrasted sharply with a 69 on Thursday. “Not the way you want to start the year,” the 2023 Masters champion admitted.

“But if there’s any positive side of it, it is the beginning of the year. There’s a lot of golf and a lot of months to look forward to. I have a pretty clear idea of what I need to work on. For these next two weeks, I will go home and try to get better.

“I wouldn’t say that there was anything that went well. No part of the game today was even average compared to what I would like to feel.”

Ten out of 10 for candour. Rahm also admirably refused to criticise anything about the event itself. Indeed he plans to return despite this early exit. “I absolutely love the golf course, absolutely love the setup,” he added. “There is nothing I could say that is bad about this tournament.

“You don’t usually see rough that long and thick outside of major championships. So I think it shows the test which is proper. If the schedule allows, I would like to be here next year and hopefully get some redemption.”

An ice-cold putter was largely responsible for McIlroy’s low-key round of 71. As he bogeyed the 15th to slide to minus two, there were some anxious glances. “They are really tricky,” said McIlroy of the greens. “There’s a lot of grain, a lot of grain going different ways, double breakers. I felt like I was hitting pretty good putts and burned a lot of edges. So I just have to keep trying to make committed strokes and make good reads. Hopefully, sooner or later they are going to drop.”

McIlroy will have the opportunity to make early headway on day three. Hovland’s 73 meant he departed at plus four. The Norwegian’s game clearly remains in a state of flux, which already raises questions over Ryder Cup participation later this year.

Ferguson finished with a flourish in fading light. The Dubai-based Scot hit an approach to the 18th that was bound for Sharjah before rebounding from a stand to within 5ft of the hole. An eagle followed, his 65 moving him one clear of Daniel Hillier at minus 12. Tyrrell Hatton lurks at eight under par.

Rory McIlroy makes the cut and advances to the weekend at the Desert Classic, while young stars Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland exit early. McIlroy, a four-time major champion, showed his experience and skill as he navigated the challenging course to secure his spot in the final rounds.

Meanwhile, Rahm and Hovland, two rising stars in the world of golf, were unable to make the cut and will be watching from the sidelines. Despite their early exit, both players have shown immense potential and are sure to bounce back in future tournaments.

As the action heats up at the Desert Classic, all eyes will be on McIlroy as he looks to make his mark and compete for the title. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting tournament.

  • Trump Inauguration Weekend Begins With Parties and Protests: Live Updates

When Mayor Eric Adams descended into Palm Beach Thursday night to meet with President-elect Donald J. Trump, he said he just wanted to advance New York City’s interests.

But the context was impossible to ignore: Mr. Adams, facing a federal corruption trial in April and the possibility of prison time, was going to visit the one person in the United States who was capable of pardoning him and who had indicated a potential interest in doing so.

The taxpayer-funded journey to Florida came with substantial political intrigue. For Mr. Trump, a Republican, the meeting could give him leverage in New York City, a place that is typically hostile to him and his party. For the mayor, a Democrat, the visit carried more peril.

Mr. Adams’s poll numbers are in the tank. He is facing several credible primary challengers. And his overtures to Mr. Trump risk damaging whatever hopes the mayor still has of winning a second term in City Hall this year.

“The politics are clearly unhelpful,” said Howard Wolfson, a political strategist for Michael R. Bloomberg, the former mayor. “But the politics are not driving the trip. The politics are clearly subsidiary to the desire to stay out of jail.”

In effect, Mr. Adams is stymied by an apparent conflict of interest that voters have no easy way to disentangle.

In September, Mr. Adams was indicted on five federal charges of corruption, including bribery, wire fraud and solicitation of contributions from foreign nationals. He pleaded not guilty and has consistently argued, without evidence, that he is the victim of a Biden administration conspiracy to punish him for criticizing the outgoing president’s immigration policies.

In recent weeks, a federal grand jury has heard additional evidence against him, which could signal new charges are coming.

He is scheduled to go on trial in April, just weeks before the Democratic primary for mayor. If a jury finds Mr. Adams guilty, he faces prison time. In 2021, the City Council overwhelmingly passed a law that bars anyone with a felony conviction for public corruption from holding office. The law is being challenged in court.

This fall, Mr. Trump, who was convicted of 34 felonies in May, indicated he felt a kinship with Mr. Adams: “We were persecuted, Eric,” Mr. Trump said at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.

Starting on Monday, after he is sworn in, Mr. Trump will have the power to pardon the mayor. Mr. Adams has said he may even attend the inaugural festivities in Washington, though his team had not confirmed any plans to travel.

New York City and its 8.3 million residents also have a lot at stake. The federal government sends billions of dollars to New York City every year for education, housing, child care and hospitals. More than 400,000 undocumented immigrants call the city home. As the mayor of America’s largest metropolis, Mr. Adams has a natural interest in developing a working relationship with the man poised to govern the nation.

In a statement Friday evening, Mr. Adams said he and the president-elect had discussed issues of importance to New Yorkers, including manufacturing jobs in the Bronx and the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

“To be clear, we did not discuss my legal case, and those who suggest the mayor of the largest city in the nation shouldn’t meet with the incoming president to discuss our city’s priorities because of inaccurate speculation or because we’re from different parties clearly care more about politics than people,” Mr. Adams said.

The political problem for the mayor is that voters have no way of knowing if he is in Palm Beach to advocate for the city or for himself, said Basil Smikle, a professor at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies and a Democratic political strategist.

No city officials traveled with Mr. Adams. Voters, Mr. Smikle continued, might reasonably ask: “What did he promise to Donald Trump to get pardoned? Did he sell the city out politically or policy wise?”

There was little political risk for Mr. Trump in the meeting. Following an election in which he made some of his biggest gains among Black and Latino voters, a prominent Black ally like Mr. Adams could help bolster the president-elect’s support in communities where he still remains broadly unpopular.

There could, however, be some risk in giving Mr. Adams a pardon. The mayor’s political fortunes seem troubled regardless of whether Mr. Trump intervenes, and his popularity in New York City may not be strong enough for Mr. Trump to benefit from helping him.

Some of Mr. Trump’s Republican supporters are upset by the nature of the corruption charges against Mr. Adams, and as the president-elect prepares to grant pardons to an untold number of his supporters who participated in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, giving one to Mr. Adams may be a bridge too far.

A spokesman for Mr. Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But advisers to the president-elect have previously said they see Mr. Adams’s situation as reinforcing Mr. Trump’s own narrative that he was a victim of the so-called deep state.

Mr. Trump has also never stopped being fixated on his hometown. And he has not always made conventional political choices.

Some New York City voters are unlikely to look kindly upon a trip to visit Mr. Trump in Florida that was only added to the mayor’s public schedule after The New York Times reported that it was happening. The mayor’s opponents quickly cast it as an obvious act of obeisance that could be damaging to Mr. Adams’s political brand.

When he was elected, Mr. Adams frequently referred to his own “swagger,” a characteristic that he said would help propel New York out of the pandemic’s doldrums. With his taste for nightlife, he sought to send the message that his town was back because he was in charge.

A short flight to Florida could undermine that.

No New Yorker wants to see their mayor kiss the ring,” Mr. Smikle said. “We’re not that kind of city. We’re the greatest city in the world. People come to us. We don’t go to them. If you’re going down to Mar a Lago to kiss the ring, what happened to that swagger that you talked about?”

Even with record low poll numbers, Mr. Adams still has support among his base of Black voters, some of whom question whether he is being treated fairly by federal prosecutors. A New York Times/Siena College poll in late October found that while only 26 percent of New York City voters approved of the mayor’s job performance, that number rose to 41 percent among Black voters.

An adviser to the mayor argued that a pardon would not necessarily prove to be Mr. Adams’s political death knell, provided it occurred relatively quickly, and that Mr. Adams could spend the months before the primary reminding voters why they elected him the first time.

Even if Mr. Adams were to lose some voters because of their distaste for Mr. Trump, the adviser said, he stood to pick up votes from the Latino, Asian and Orthodox Jewish communities, where Mr. Trump has some support.

If Mr. Adams is putting his status as the Democratic mayor of New York City at risk, he has other options.

For a period of time in the 1990s, Mr. Adams was a registered Republican. He could theoretically run as a Republican again. But there is no guarantee he would win in a city where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by six to one. Some New York Republicans have thrown cold water on the idea that they would welcome Mr. Adams into their fold, and he has maintained that he will run for re-election as a Democrat.

Still, like most things in modern Republican politics, Mr. Trump could single-handedly scramble those positions.

Mr. Adams could also abandon the mayoralty altogether and chart a new political destiny for himself as a Black MAGA Republican.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, a prominent ally of the mayor’s who has stood by him despite his indictment and a flurry of resignations from his administration, recently warned Mr. Adams, in an interview with Politico, that a pardon could seriously damage his political career.

Before Mr. Adams met with Mr. Trump, he had a text exchange with Mr. Sharpton, the reverend said. Mr. Sharpton said he warned the mayor that Mr. Trump would try to manipulate him for his own purposes.

“I told him I’m concerned that he could misuse you to cover some of his biased policies,” Mr. Sharpton said.

“With his base, he could explain a lot of things,” Mr. Sharpton continued, referring to Mr. Adams. “What he can’t control is what Trump is going to do. And if he’s identified with that, how do you disassociate with that?”

    Nicholas Fandos contributed reporting.

As the Trump Inauguration weekend kicks off, Washington D.C. is abuzz with both celebratory parties and passionate protests.

Trump supporters gathered at various events around the city, including a “DeploraBall” party at the National Press Club. Attendees were decked out in their finest attire, celebrating the incoming President’s victory with music, dancing, and drinks.

Meanwhile, protesters took to the streets to voice their discontent with the new administration. Signs reading “Love Trumps Hate” and “Not My President” were seen throughout the city as demonstrators marched in opposition to Trump’s policies and rhetoric.

Tensions are high as the country braces for the inauguration ceremony tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates on this historic weekend. #InaugurationDay #TrumpInauguration #Protests #Parties

  • New England maps show how much snow Boston will get this weekend

Southern New England is set to see a snowmaker push through the region Sunday afternoon into Monday morning with the Boston area looking at 3 to 6 inches of snow, likely sticking closer to the lower end of accumulation.

Regardless of where the storm tracks, Southern New England is set to see all snow or a quick switchover to snow Sunday night when temperatures drop. Most of Northern New England will see only snow.

A winter storm warning has been issued for 1 p.m., Sunday until 7 a.m., Monday for most of Massachusetts: north and west of Boston, including Worcester County and the Berkshires, as well as southern Vermont and most of Connecticut. A winter storm watch is in effect Sunday for Boston, Norfolk and Providence counties, northern Rhode Island, parts of New Hampshire and Maine.

As winter weather approaches, many New Englanders are eagerly checking their local weather forecasts to see just how much snow they can expect this weekend. Boston, in particular, is always a hot spot for snowfall during the winter months.

Thankfully, there are several interactive maps available online that can help residents track the upcoming snowfall in the Boston area. These maps use real-time data to provide accurate predictions of snow accumulation, allowing residents to prepare accordingly.

Whether you’re planning a cozy weekend indoors or gearing up for some outdoor snow activities, these maps can give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of snowfall in Boston this weekend. Stay safe and stay warm!

  • NFL divisional round Props that Pop – Overs rule the weekend

Daniel Dopp and I hit on five of our seven props in the first week of the NFL postseason. Bo Nix let Daniel down and Zach Ertz disappointed me, from a props perspective. (Though — spoiler — that isn’t going to stop me from attacking the tight end position again this go around.)

While we’re proud of our collective effort, we’d love to achieve perfection in the divisional round.

Focusing solely on the Sunday games, here this week’s props that pop! — Liz Loza

All odds as of publication time. For the latest odds, visit ESPN BET.

    Quarterback props

Lamar Jackson OVER 278.5 rushing + passing yards (-118)

    play

    0:35

Why Fulghum has his eyes on the Ravens-Bills’ points total

Tyler Fulghum is taking the under in Ravens-Bills, factoring the strength of Buffalo’s offensive line against Derrick Henry.

Loza: Jackson’s overall efficiency this season as a passer and a rusher has been off the charts. He ranks first at the position in YPA (8.8) as well as rushing yards per contest (53.8). Jackson is completing 70% of his passes with a clean pocket, so the Buffalo Bills pass rush (which ranks sixth in pass-rush win rate at 44.6%) figures to bring the heat. Still, the Baltimore Ravens‘ offensive line has protected Lamar beautifully, registering the third-highest pass-block win rate (69.8%).

This aerial battle figures to be tight (the Ravens are a 1-point favorite) and showcase plenty of back-and-forth action (51.5 game points total). But even if Buffalo manages to contain Jackson in the passing game, the QB should gain traction with his legs against a defensive unit that has allowed 4.5 yards per carry to opposing rushers.

Jackson OVER 49.5 rushing yards (-140)

Dopp: Lamar has been the best rushing QB in the NFL this year, amassing 915 rushing yards on the ground in the regular season and adding 81 more yards in last week’s wild-card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. This prop could pair nicely with Liz’s prop of Jackson topping 278.5 rushing and passing yards. Lamar has hit at least 63 rushing yards in three straight games and five of his last six.

The Bills have actually been fairly decent against the run this year, but Jackson is in a different category than any other player in the NFL when it comes to running the ball. He’s a true wizard when scrambling, especially when a play breaks down and improvises. I wouldn’t go any lower than -140 if I was taking this bet, and I’d absolutely consider pairing this with a passing prop of 275+ passing yards. When you put those two props together, it creates a nice little two-leg parlay at +163.

Josh Allen OVER 32.5 pass attempts

    play

    10:26

Is Lamar Jackson vs. Josh Allen the best rivalry?

Stephen A. Smith, Cam Newton and Ryan Clark discuss Lamar Jackson’s comments about his friendship with the Bills quarterback.

Dopp: There’s a lot to like in this Ravens-Bills matchup, but if you’re thinking about the game the same way I am, you’re likely expecting more than a handful of points to be scored. ESPN BET has the total at 51.5, so it looks like the book is also expecting some decent offense in this one as well. The Ravens defense has proven to be pretty legit at stopping the ground game, allowing the second-fewest rush attempts and the fewest rushing yards this season. That should mean more passing for the Bills offense. If the Ravens put up points like we expect, it means more throwing for Allen.

The Ravens have the third-most pass attempts against them this season, and a 32.5 passing attempts number isn’t an astronomical amount by any means. Allen has topped this line seven times this season and fell four pass attempts short of this line when the Bills played the Ravens earlier this year in a 35-10 loss. Eleven QBs have put up at least 33 attempts against the Ravens on the season. I’m leaning into the high-scoring narrative in this one, which means I’m taking the over on Allen’s pass attempts Sunday.

Matthew Stafford OVER 0.5 INTs (-135)

    play

    0:36

Why Fulghum has the Eagles heading to NFC Championship Game

Tyler Fulghum explains why he favors the Eagles over the Rams to head onto the NFC Championship Game.

Dopp: The Philadelphia Eagles have been on a heater against opposing QBs recently, nabbing at least one interception in four straight games. But stat doesn’t even tell the whole story, as Philly has produced eight interceptions over that four game span! This defense is playing hot, and teams have had to throw against them more often than not toward the end of the season to try to keep up with the Eagles offense.

Stafford has actually been pretty good at protecting the ball this year. He has only one interception since Week 11! I’m expecting the story to be different in the divisional round with the Los Angeles Rams playing in a blustery, cold Philly climate. Temperatures are forecast to be in the low 30’s with winds hitting 10-15 mph, and there’s a 97% chance of snow in Philadelphia on Sunday with accumulation expected to be around 3-5 inches. It’s not going to be a whiteout, but it’ll certainly be a chilly outing for a team from L.A.

Given the Eagles defense’s knack for finding the ball and the likelihood of the Rams playing from behind, I’m taking Stafford to have at least one pick in this one. And, you know what, why not put a few pennies down on Darius Slayton, his old teammate from Detroit to be the defender to come up with the INT at +500 over at ESPN BET?

    Running back props

Justice Hill OVER 2.5 receptions (-160), longest rush OVER 5.5 yards (-130)

Loza: Hill isn’t the Ravens’ running back that most folks are talking about this week. And that’s exactly why I want to highlight his potential. The Bills have been fantastically generous to RBs via the air, allowing the second-most catches (5.4 per game) and the most receiving yards (44 per game) to the position over the regular season. Meanwhile, Hill has recorded at least four grabs in each of his last three healthy contests. Additionally, he hauled in all six of his looks (for 78 receiving yards a score) when he teed off against Buffalo back in Week 4.

While the 27-year-old has registered just 53 carries thus far into the season, it’s worth noting that over 20% of them (11) went for over six yards. As previously discussed, the Bills’ run defense can be had (4.6 YPC to opposing rushers). Additionally, the Bills’ have given up the ninth-most rushes of 10 or more yards (62). That’s great for Derrick Henry. It also makes a single rush of six yards more than possible for Hill, especially since he’s averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

    Tight end props

Dallas Goedert OVER 39.5 receiving yards (Even)

Loza: The Rams defense put together a masterful effort in the wild-card round, limiting the Minnesota Vikings to nine points. L.A.’s young pass rush stood up, regularly pressuring Sam Darnold and protecting the team’s secondary from potential exposure. However, the Rams are unlikely to have the same success versus Jalen Hurts and the electric Eagles offense. While that should allow room for Philly’s wide receivers to shine, bettors should also expect Goedert to be involved.

L.A. has struggled against opposing tight ends all season, giving up the third-most catches (6.2 per game) and the fourth-most receiving yards (65.7 per game) to the position. Despite the Rams’ success last Monday, T.J. Hockenson converted all five of his looks for 64 receiving yards and Minnesota’s lone TD. Ranking fifth at the position in yards per target (9.5) and seventh among TEs in yards per reception (11.8), Goedert won’t need to be fed in order to fly. Averaging over four catches and nearly 50 receiving yards per game, the 30-year-old figures to flirt with four grabs and forty yards Sunday.

The NFL divisional round is here, and that means it’s time for some exciting prop bets to add even more excitement to the games. This weekend, the overs are ruling the day, with high-scoring matchups expected across the board. Here are some props that are sure to pop this weekend:

    1. Over 300 passing yards for Patrick Mahomes – The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is known for his arm strength and ability to put up big numbers through the air. With the Chiefs facing off against the Cleveland Browns, who have a suspect secondary, look for Mahomes to surpass the 300-yard mark easily.

    2. Over 100 rushing yards for Derrick Henry – The Tennessee Titans running back is a force to be reckoned with, especially in the playoffs. With the Titans taking on the Baltimore Ravens, who have struggled against the run this season, Henry should have no problem eclipsing the 100-yard mark on the ground.

    3. Over 3 touchdown passes for Josh Allen – The Buffalo Bills quarterback has had a breakout season and has been lighting up the scoreboard all year. With the Bills facing off against the Baltimore Ravens, who have a tough defense but can be vulnerable through the air, look for Allen to have a big day and throw for over 3 touchdowns.

    4. Over 50 receiving yards for Tyreek Hill – The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver is one of the fastest players in the league and has the ability to break a big play at any moment. With the Chiefs taking on the Cleveland Browns, who have struggled against top-tier receivers this season, look for Hill to have a big game and surpass 50 receiving yards easily.

These props are sure to add some extra excitement to an already thrilling weekend of NFL playoff action. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the overs ruling the day in the divisional round.

  • Is UFC 311 still taking place in LA this weekend? ‘No chance’ of location change as Dana White gives new update amid wildfires

UFC 311 will take place in Los Angeles this evening despite the ongoing wildfire crisis spreading across the city.

The first major event of the 2025 UFC calendar was thought to potentially have to move location due to the devastating scenes.

LA has been devastated by wildfire over the last few days

A gigantic wildfire has spread through LA and in just a few days, more than 10,000 structures had been impacted, with at least 25 people losing their lives.

Sport then took a backseat, with the risk being too high to play any fixtures in the affected areas as the fire continued to spread.

In the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers called off their games while in the NFL, the LA Rams moved stadium to play.

That left many question marks over the venue for UFC 311 which has been planned to go ahead at the Intuit Dome…

Is UFC 311 still taking place in LA?

UFC 311 is still going ahead in Los Angeles.

That is according to president Dana White who gave a new update on the situation on Wednesday afternoon.

“No, there’s no chance we move,” White told The Jim Rome Show on after being asked about a location switch.

“We’ll be there on Saturday. 100%

“I think this event is definitely going to be a boost for the people who live there [in Los Angeles].”

Those comments came after he remained wary of the event moving if the fires in LA got worse.

White has given a new update on the situation

Speaking on a stream with social media star Adin Ross on Sunday, White said: “Well, if the fire gets bad, we are coming to Vegas.

“Yeah, we’ll move it to Vegas. If it gets too bad. But as of now? It’s all go. The NBA is gonna go this week. We are gonna go.”

The LA Clippers beat the Miami Heat 109-98 in an NBA match at the Intuit Dome on Tuesday.

The LA Lakers also played at the Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday, losing 126-102 to the San Antonio Spurs.

As well as the comments from the UFC boss, the California State Athletic Commission has also spoken about the situation.

They said: “We are watching the ongoing wildfires and the subsequent emergency and disaster response in the Los Angeles area.

‘It’s gone forever’ – LA soccer star Ali Riley crushed by devastating impact of wildfires

“Our hearts are with the residents of the region, and we appreciate the efforts of first responders in keeping the community safe.

“At this time, no decisions have been made about moving UFC 311, but we will continue to work with state and local officials and the UFC to determine the best course of action.”

Since then, nothing has changed, so UFC 311 is taking place in Los Angeles.

The BBC have reported that the winds that have fanned the wildfires are ‘expected to kick up’ this week.

Forecasters have again cautioned ‘extreme fire danger’ in the north-west of the city centre with the Intuit Dome located around 20 miles south of the Palisades fire which is still burning.

Should it go ahead as planned, UFC 311 will get started at 11pm UK time before the preliminary fights start at 1am on Sunday morning.

The main card, which included two title fights, ae expected to get going at around 3am on Sunday UK time.

Islam Makhachev will defend his UFC lightweight title against Renato Moicano while Merab Dvalishvili aims to keep his bantamweight belt against Umar Nurmagomedov.

As wildfires continue to ravage parts of California, many fans are wondering if UFC 311 will still be taking place in Los Angeles this weekend. The good news is that there is “no chance” of a location change, according to UFC President Dana White.

Despite the wildfires causing devastation in the region, White has assured fans that the event will go ahead as planned. The safety of fighters, staff, and fans is always a top priority for the UFC, and White has stated that they are monitoring the situation closely.

So for all you fight fans out there, rest assured that UFC 311 will still be taking place in LA this weekend. Get ready for some epic battles in the octagon!

  • Irv Smith Jr. and 11 ex-Vikings playing in the Divisional Round this weekend

While the Minnesota Vikings saw their 2024 season come to an end this past Monday, there are still several former members of their roster who will be competing in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs this weekend.

Of the eight teams that will be battling it out in the AFC and NFC, the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, and Detroit Lions will all take the field for their matchups with at least one former Vikings player on their roster.

Some of these former Minnesota players are household names while others had stints with the franchise that weren’t very memorable. After this weekend, some of these ex-Vikings will be even closer to winning a Super Bowl ring this season.

12 former Minnesota Vikings competing in the Divisional Round of the 2024 NFL playoffs

    Saturday

Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs – 3:30 p.m. CST

    Former Vikings

    Kris Boyd – DB (Texans)
    Danielle Hunter – Edge (Texans)
Irv Smith Jr. – TE (Texans)

Danielle Hunter is the most notable former Minnesota player taking part in this matchup. In his first NFL season away from the Vikings, Hunter has continued to be a dominant pass rusher for Houston.

During the Texans’ first-round playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers last week, the former Minnesota defender generated five pressures and three tackles. Houston will need Hunter to have a similar performance, if not something even better, in order to upset the heavily favored Chiefs on Saturday.

Washington Commanders at Detoit Lions – 7:00 p.m. CST

    Former Vikings

    Sheldon Day – DL (Commanders)
    Jalyn Holmes – DL (Commanders)
    K.J. Osborn – WR (Commanders)

    Teddy Bridgewater – QB (Lions)
    Za’Darius Smith – OLB (Lions)
    Jonah Williams – DL (Lions)
    Shane Zylstra – TE (Lions)

This is the playoff contest from the Divisional Round that will feature the most former Vikings players.

Jalyn Holmes, K.J. Osborn, and Teddy Bridgewater are all former Minnesota draft picks while guys like Za’Darius Smith and Sheldon Day played notable roles on some of the recent teams put out on the field by the Vikings during the Kevin O’Connell era.

    Sunday

Los Angeles Rams at Philadelphia Eagles – 2:00 p.m. CST

    Former Vikings

    Lewis Cine – S (Eagles)

After spending the majority of the 2024 season on the Buffalo Bills practice squad, former Minnesota first-round pick Lewis Cine signed with Philadelphia shortly before the team’s first-round playoff game against the Green Bay Packers last week.

Cine was a healthy scratch for the matchup against the Packers, but it’s unknown if the Eagles will have him suit up to take on the Rams on Sunday or not.

Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills – 5:30 p.m. CST

    Former Vikings

    Michael Pierce – DT (Ravens)

During the 2020 offseason, Michael Pierce was viewed as one of the Vikings’ top new additions after they signed him to a multi-year contract in free agency.

But Pierce’s tenure with Minnesota fell well short of his initial expectations, as he sat out the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then injuries limited him to just eight games for Minnesota in the 2021 campaign.

After that season, he re-joined the Ravens, which is the team he played for before signing with the Vikings in 2020, and now he’s attempting to help Baltimore reach its first Super Bowl since 2012.

Irv Smith Jr. and 11 ex-Vikings playing in the Divisional Round this weekend

As the NFL playoffs continue on, there are several former Minnesota Vikings players who will be taking the field in the Divisional Round this weekend. One of those players is Irv Smith Jr., who spent the first three seasons of his career with the Vikings before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this year.

Joining Smith in the Divisional Round are 11 other ex-Vikings players, including quarterback Case Keenum, who will be leading the Cleveland Browns against the Buffalo Bills. Keenum famously led the Vikings to the NFC Championship game in the 2017 season.

Other former Vikings players in action this weekend include wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who will be facing off against Keenum and the Browns as a member of the Bills, as well as defensive end Everson Griffen, who will be suiting up for the Dallas Cowboys.

It’s always interesting to see former Vikings players finding success with other teams in the playoffs, and this weekend will be no exception. Be sure to tune in to see how these ex-Vikings fare in the Divisional Round!

Get ready for a wild weather ride this weekend as a major temperature drop brings us from rain to snow in just a matter of hours. After enjoying mild temperatures and rainy conditions, a cold front will sweep through, causing temperatures to plummet and turning that rain into snow.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there – heavy lake effect snow is expected to follow, bringing the potential for significant accumulation in some areas. This sudden shift in weather patterns is a reminder that winter is not quite ready to release its grip just yet.

So, be sure to bundle up and prepare for the winter wonderland that is headed our way. And if you have any outdoor plans, you may want to reconsider or at least be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Stay safe and stay warm, folks! #winterweather #snowstorm #lakelife #bundleup

  • Treacherous conditions expected as skiers head to high country for MLK weekend

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is warning travelers about icy and snowy road conditions expected Friday night and Saturday morning as skiers head to the high country for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.

Drivers heading up Interstate 70 should prepare for significant travel difficulties, including the risk of flash freezing.

“It’s going to be a mess,” said Dave Riggs, who stopped to fill up near Genesee before embarking on his journey on westbound I-70.

    Denver7 News

Riggs decided to fuel up in anticipation of potential delays.

“Just coming up the hill, it got real slippery. So I pulled over here to fuel up just in case I have to spend the night somewhere,” he added.

Many drivers are taking CDOT’s warnings seriously, with some opting to stay off the roads altogether.

“Not going skiing. Staying home, bundle up, watch some movies, all that good stuff,” said Kim, a driver who also stopped near Genesee.

The winter storm is expected to create challenges not only for travelers but maintenance crews. CDOT’s plows are outfitted with technology that measures road friction to determine the appropriate de-icing and anti-icing products needed to maintain safety on the highways.

Charlie Stubblefield, owner of Mountain Recovery, is anticipating an influx of service calls this weekend.

The towing company typically responds to about 15 incidents per day. Stubblefield expects that number to skyrocket to around 75.

“There’s going to be one minute where the roads are going to be just dry to wet and not frozen over, and the next minute, around that corner wherever you’re going to be, it’s going to be totally frozen,” Stubblefield warned. “You’re going to be out of control. Be prepared. Don’t take anything for granted.”

Stubblefield also emphasized the importance of moving over for anyone on the side of the road, if you do need to travel.

CDOT has reported record ski travel for MLK weekends in the past. Last year nearly 165,000 drivers traveled both east and westbound through the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Travelers can check current road conditions at cotrip.org.

Denver7 is committed to making a difference in our community by standing up for what’s right, listening, lending a helping hand and following through on promises. See that work in action, in the videos above.

As skiers across the country prepare to hit the slopes for the long MLK weekend, they should be aware of treacherous conditions awaiting them in the high country. With recent snowfall and freezing temperatures, avalanche risk is high and mountain roads may be icy and dangerous.

It’s important for skiers to be prepared and take necessary precautions before heading out for a day on the mountain. This includes checking avalanche forecasts, carrying essential safety gear such as beacons, shovels, and probes, and staying up to date on weather conditions.

Additionally, skiers should be mindful of their surroundings and stay on designated trails to avoid potential hazards. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to backcountry skiing.

As we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, let’s also remember to stay safe and responsible while enjoying the great outdoors. Have a fun and safe weekend on the slopes!
