• Below-freezing low temps arrive will arrive this weekend in the Seattle area

Overnight temperatures are expected to remain in the high 20s beginning Saturday and lasting through the middle of next week.

SEATTLE — The first stretch of prolonged cold weather will arrive in western Washington by the weekend and stick around into next week.

The overnight low temperatures will be the biggest concern in this new weather system.

Lows are expected to drop into the low 30s on Saturday, and then into the high 20s from Sunday through Wednesday.

KING 5 has activated First Alert until Saturday morning for this weather event, which could affect lives, property or travel in the Pacific Northwest region. During this event, the First Alert Weather Team will bring you the latest information to keep you and your family safe.

Fog is expected to linger in the mornings, meaning some places could be dealing with freezing fog or black ice during the early morning commute. People should also prepare their homes, making sure to address any exposed pipes and ready their gardens for freezing temperatures. Particularly fragile plants should be covered to protect them from frost.

Amid freezing temperatures, the American Red Cross recommends allowing water to drip from pipes, as even a small amount of water running through them can help prevent them from freezing and bursting.

Shelters across the region are gearing up to provide crucial assistance to those in need. Emergency spaces are being opened to keep vulnerable individuals safe from potentially life-threatening conditions.

In Snoqualmie, the cold weather shelter, Reclaim, is preparing to serve people during this severe weather event. Jennifer Kirk, the executive director of Reclaim, emphasized their commitment to helping those in need.

“We will never turn somebody away that needs those emergency services,” Kirk said.

The Salvation Army in Seattle is also anticipating increased demand for their services. With a capacity for 35 people at their location, they view their role as critical during these harsh weather conditions.

“It can be very challenging and life-threatening for people. So, this is a safety net for so many people that we serve,” explained Captain Melissa Jones, a Chaplain with the Salvation Army.

“In the Seattle Center area, we’re coordinating an activation of an additional severe weather shelter that can support 120-plus guests,” said Marc Garcia, executive director of operations for the Seattle Social Services Unit of the Salvation Army.

With temperatures set to plummet, these shelters stand ready to fulfill their mission.

“We never forget that we are a lifesaving agency before anything else that we do,” Kirk said.

People looking for a cold weather shelter can find the nearest one to them online on the 211 Washington map or by calling 2-1-1.

The weather system is expected to remain largely dry, aside from a few showers from an occasional weak weather system. Temperatures are likely to remain chilly until late next week when overnight lows will rise into the lower to mid-30s, with highs in the mid to upper-40s.

As winter weather begins to settle in, below-freezing low temperatures are set to arrive this weekend in the Seattle area. With the potential for icy conditions and frosty mornings, it’s important to take precautions to stay safe and warm.

Make sure to bundle up in layers, including a heavy coat, hat, gloves, and scarf. Keep your home heated and insulated to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting. If you must travel, drive cautiously and be prepared for slick roads.

It’s also a good idea to check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance during these cold spells. Stay informed about weather updates and advisories to stay ahead of any potential hazards.

While the chilly temperatures may be a shock to the system, taking the necessary steps to prepare can help ensure a safe and comfortable weekend in the Seattle area. Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the winter wonderland that awaits!

Cyrus will join Kid Rock, The Village People and Lee Greenwood at the Make America Great Again Victory Rally on Jan. 19, where Trump is scheduled to deliver remarks ahead of his and Vice President-Elect J.D. Vance‘s respective swearing-in ceremonies.

In the meantime, Jason Aldean is scheduled to perform at the Liberty Ball, a nighttime gala taking place shortly after Trump and Vance take the oath of office on Jan. 20.

Elsewhere around the capital that night, Rascal Flatts and Parker McCollum will serenade the crowd at the Commander-in-Chief Ball, while Gavin DeGraw will headline the Starlight Ball.

As for performers at the official presidential inauguration? That’ll be Carrie Underwood, who will sing “America the Beautiful.” Meanwhile, opera singer Christopher Macchio will be in charge of delivering the National Anthem.

“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a Jan. 13 statement to E! News. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

And many familiar faces are likely to be in attendance. In addition to former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, multiple members from former first families have RSVP’d to the televised event.

Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush will be their respective husbands’ plus-ones, though an Obama spokesperson confirmed on Jan. 14 that Michelle Obama will be sitting this one out.

Of course, spectators can also expect to see members of Trump’s family as well, including wife Melania Trump and their 18-year-old son Barron Trump.

To get to know the incoming First Family, keep reading for a complete guide to the Trump family tree.

    Ivana Trump

Ivana Trump

Ivana Trump was the first wife of President-elect Donald Trump. Born in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia—now Zlín of the Czech Republic—in 1949, she rose to fame as a competitive skier. And, thanks to her marriage to Austrian ski instructor Alfred Winklmayr in 1971, Ivana was able to travel often outside of Czechoslovakia.

According to her book Raising Trump, the model met Donald three years after her 1973 divorce during a New York trip, where she’d traveled for a Canadian fashion show ahead of the Montreal Olympics. They wed in 1977 and welcomed three kids: Donald Trump Jr. born in 1977, Ivanka Trump born in 1981 and Eric Trump born in 1984.

The pair’s divorce was finalized in 1992 following his affair with Marla Maples, whom he later married.

However, Ivana—who then married Riccardo Mazzucchelli for two years followed by Rossano Rubicondi for less than a year—and Donald remained on good terms.

“Donald during the divorce was brutal,” she told ABC News in 2017. “He took the divorce as a business deal, and he cannot lose. He has to win. So he took about two years. And after the final situation was straightened up, we would just talk and we are friends.”

Ivana died in 2022 at age 73. According to NBC News, the New York City Medical Examiner said she died of “blunt impact injuries” and that her manner of death was an accident. A senior NYC official with direct knowledge added the circumstances were consistent with a fall on the stairs in her New York apartment.

    Donald Trump Jr.

Donald Trump Jr.

In 1977, Ivana and Donald welcomed their eldest son Donald Trump Jr. He began working for his father’s company The Trump Organization in 2001 and now serves as the executive vice president. Don Jr. has also been involved in his dad’s political campaigns, including speaking at rallies and the Republican National Convention during his father’s presidential runs.

He shares five children with his ex-wife, model Vanessa Haydon: Kai (who made a speech at the 2024 Republican National Convention) Donald III, Tristan, Spencer and Chloe. Don Jr. is now engaged to Fox News alum Kimberly Guilfoyle.

    Ivanka Trump

Ivanka Trump

Four years after the arrival of Don Jr., Donald and Ivana became parents to daughter Ivanka Trump.

Before her father’s presidency, the University of Pennsylvania alum worked at The Trump Organization. But after he was elected in 2016, the fashion brand founder—who had her own eponymous line—took on the role of Advisor to the President.

After her dad announced he would be running for president again in 2024, Ivanka revealed she would be stepping out of the political arena to focus on her family with husband, former White House senior advisor Jared Kushner, and their children Arabella, Joseph and Theodore.

“I love my father very much,” she said in part of a 2022 statement obtained by NBC News. “This time around, I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family. I do not plan to be involved in politics.”

    Eric Trump

Eric Trump

Born in 1984, Eric Trump is the third child of Ivana and Donald. Like his brother, he works as executive vice president of The Trump Organization, which he joined in 2007.

He is married to Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump, with whom he shares kids Luke and Carolina.

    Marla Maples

Marla Maples

Marla Maples is Donald’s second wife, whom he met while still married to Ivana.

In Raising Trump, Ivana wrote the actress approached her about the affair during a trip to Aspen in 1989. Still, Marla said on a 2018 episode of the ABC podcast Journeys of Faith with Paula Faris that she “never considered” herself a mistress.

“My intention was to never bring hurt,” she continued. “Do I wish more than anything that we could have had this relationship after his divorce papers were signed? Absolutely. I mean, with all my heart. How much heartache would it have saved so many people if I had seen that piece of paper before we got involved? But it didn’t happen that way.”

Marla and Donald welcomed daughter Tiffany Trump in 1993, and the couple wed later that year. However, the Dancing With the Stars alum and the 45th commander in chief announced their separation four years later and finalized their divorce in 1999.

    Tiffany Trump

Tiffany Trump

After her parents’ breakup, Tiffany Trump relocated with her mother to California.

“She moved us out of New York to get out of the spotlight and let me grow up and find my own identity versus being in the shadow of a name or growing up very young with all that pressure,” Tiffany told People in 2016. “So, she wanted me to have a chance to have a normal childhood. As normal as possible. I think that she did well in that.”

She released her 2011 single “Like a Bird” and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 with a B.A. in sociology, focusing on law and society. She then went to Georgetown Law School, where she graduated with a JD in 2020.

In 2022, Tiffany wed Michael Boulos. Her father announced they’re expecting their first baby during an October 2024 speech at the Detroit Economic Club. “She’s an exceptional young woman,” he said during his remarks. “And she’s going to have a baby. So that’s nice.”

    Melania Trump

Melania Trump

Melania Trump is Donald’s third wife and incoming First Lady of the United States. Born in Mesto, Slovenia in 1970, she is the second First Lady to be born outside of the U.S. and the only First Lady to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Melania met Donald in New York in 1996 while she was working as a model.

“It was a big fashion party that my friend organized, fashion week, and he invited me,” she recalled on a 2016 episode of On the Record With Greta Van Susteren. “That’s how we met with Donald.”

Melania and Donald married in 2005, and they welcomed son Barron Trump the following year.

    Barron Trump

Barron Trump

Born in 2006, Barron Trump is Donald and Melania’s only child. While he has lived a more private life—relocating with his parents from New York to live in Washington, D.C. and then Florida—it looked like he might enter the political world after he was selected in May 2024 as a Florida delegate to the Republican National Convention. However, Barron declined the offer.

“While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party,” a statement from Melania’s office shared with NBC News at the time said, “he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments.”

Like studying, perhaps, with Barron starting his freshman year at New York University in 2024. “He was accepted to a lot of colleges,” his father told the Daily Mail in an interview published Sept. 4. “He’s a very smart guy, and he’ll be going to Stern, the business school, which is a great school at NYU.”

  • Winter Weather Alerts will look different going into this weekend

The National Weather Service has changed its winter weather alerts. This went into effect back in October of last year, but we haven’t seen any of these alerts issued yet. With this incoming arctic blast, temperatures will likely drop below zero, and we could see these brand new alerts issued.

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

    News 5

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

One of the main changes was the consolidation of wind chill alerts. You will now just see extreme cold alerts. Wind chill watches/warnings/advisories are no longer going to be issued because cold temperatures can be dangerous with or without the wind. The new advisory that we could see be issued this weekend is the cold weather advisory. With our temperatures dropping below zero into the teens we could very well see these advisories issued.

When a cold weather advisory is issued, apparent temperatures are between -18 and -24. Our forecast currently has our lows getting around -13 degrees for Colorado Springs with apparent temperatures making it feel like the negative 20s, but these temperatures will fluctuate as we get closer to the weekend. If apparent temperatures were to get down to -25 degrees or lower, this is when an extreme cold alert would be issued. Pets and children will need to stay inside and are prone to frostbite and hypothermia.

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

    News 5

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

The other change that NWS made we won’t see until later this year. Hard freeze alerts will be combined into a freeze alert. These are more so issued for any gardeners or ranchers in the area. Hard freezes indicated the end of the growing season. The meteorologists at NWS will still indicate in the description of the alert if this is a hard freeze or not. When freeze alerts are issued you also want to protect any exposed pipes around your home.

The First Alert 5 Weather team will be sure to update with any new information throughout this weekend.

As we head into the weekend, it’s important to stay informed about any winter weather alerts that may be in effect. However, this weekend, those alerts may look a bit different than what we are used to.

With the advancement of technology and the ability to receive alerts on our phones and devices, we may see more personalized and targeted alerts based on our location. This means that you may receive alerts specific to your area, rather than a general alert for the entire region.

Additionally, with the increasing accuracy of weather forecasting, alerts may be issued further in advance, giving you more time to prepare and plan accordingly. This could help minimize any disruptions caused by severe weather.

So as we prepare for the weekend, be sure to stay tuned to your local news sources and weather apps for the most up-to-date information on any winter weather alerts that may be in effect. Stay safe and stay informed!

  • Snow this weekend in Boston, how much will Massachusetts, New Hampshire get? – NBC Boston

There’s a lot going on as we round the corner to midwinter.

First up, is the warmup today (a bit) and Saturday (a bit more). A superb winter day is in store as we leap past freezing and head for the mid-30s.

    Rain expected Saturday

Clouds will have the upper hand all weekend, but we expect the showers to hold off until Saturday afternoon.

    Mild temperatures are expected.

Lots of melting and thawing with highs in the mid-40s.

How much snow will we get Sunday into Monday?

Sunday is the day we get jerked back to reality. Cold air will move in during the afternoon as a storm system winds up far offshore. Snow will sweep in from Connecticut and New York toward evening.

As subfreezing air is drawn in, the stage is set for accumulation overnight and into Monday morning.

Right now, it appears that the storm is moving quickly enough to keep amounts in the reasonable range of 3-5”.

But if the storm tracks a bit closer, we could see higher amounts with a bit more mixing on Cape Cod. It’s not a huge discrepancy — especially on a holiday weekend — but it will be an inconvenience and leave behind slippery travel/cleanup into Monday morning.

Blast of arctic air next week

What follows will certainly be the coldest air of this season AND last. We haven’t seen the likes of this cold in almost two years!

The wind won’t be howling in this cold snap, but just a moderate breeze will be enough to put us in “well below zero” territory in the wind chill department.

Thankfully, the cold won’t be around for long. Temps moderate late next week, as we watch the storm track carefully. We count no less than three close brushes with storms into the following week!

    Have a good weekend.

Get ready for a winter wonderland this weekend, as snow is expected to blanket Massachusetts and New Hampshire. According to NBC Boston, both states could see significant snowfall amounts.

In Massachusetts, areas like Boston, Worcester, and Springfield could see anywhere from 4-8 inches of snow. The coastal regions may see slightly less accumulation due to milder temperatures.

In New Hampshire, cities like Manchester, Concord, and Portsmouth could see similar snowfall totals, with some areas potentially receiving up to 10 inches of snow.

So make sure to stock up on hot cocoa and cozy up by the fire, as this weekend’s snowstorm is sure to bring a picturesque scene to the Northeast. Stay tuned to NBC Boston for the latest updates on this winter weather event.

  • Northeast Snow To Impact Millions This Weekend

    undefined

    Play

    • Winter Storm Demi is set to bring several inches of snowfall to much of the mid-Atlantic, Northeast and New England.
    • That could include the an NFL playoff game Sunday in Philadelphia.
    • After the snow ends, the coldest air of the season will settle in.

A big blast of snow, then cold air is set to sweep across the Northeast this holiday weekend.

Named Winter Storm Demi by The Weather Channel, it will bring a quick round of snow to some of the country’s largest cities, which could impact everything from travel to playoff football.

(MORE: Why We Name Winter Storms And The 2024-25 List)

    Saturday

On Saturday, a cold front will sweep through the area, bringing mainly rain to coastal areas and the Interstate 95 corridor. Some light snow will sweep through interior sections of the Northeast, northern New England and the Ohio Valley.

A soggy Saturday is expected across much of the Southeast.

However, this is not the main event.

    Sunday

The headliner for this weekend’s system is the area of low pressure that will shoot out of the South and head north along the Atlantic coast. This will strengthen as it moves northward and wring out the snow across the Northeast and New England.

(For even more granular weather data tracking in your area, view your 15-minute details forecast in our Premium Pro experience.)

    imageimage

There are still model discrepancies as to how much snow will fall; much of this depends on how close to the coast the low tracks.

If the low hugs the coast, then there will be more snow for the big cities. But if the low tracks farther west, then the snowfall amounts will be smaller along I-95.

We could see a wintry mix across portions of the mid-Atlantic on Sunday before changing to snow Sunday evening.

    Sunday Night

    imageimage

Sunday evening, the snow will be wrapping up from south to north before eventually moving out by Monday morning. Much of the Northeast and New England will continue to see snowfall during the overnight hours.

Here’s a look at snowfall totals expected from Winter Storm Demi.

    imageimage

The Rams vs. Eagles playoff game in Philadelphia on Sunday could get interesting. With the potential for snow moving in, there could be issues with travel getting to and from the game. Right now, the forecast calls for generally up to 5 inches of snow in and around Philadelphia, with the highest totals along I-95 and westward.

The rest of the Northeast and New England could see several inches of snow, but there are still uncertainties. Regardless, there will still be travel trouble Sunday evening into Monday morning, with slick roads and possible airport delays.

The mid-Atlantic, including Washington, D.C., is also forecast for snowy conditions much of Sunday. The forecast calls for a couple of inches of snow, but the snow will be pushing out well ahead of the Presidential Inauguration on Monday.

(MORE: This Inauguration Could Be The Coldest In 40 Years)

    Dangerous Cold Settles In

While the snow wraps up on Sunday, the winds will kick in Sunday night into Monday. Any snow on the ground will have the potential to blow around and cause visibility issues, making travel difficult in some areas.

Once the snow moves out, the coldest air mass of the season will move in, lasting through much of next week. Some areas will experience dangerously cold temperatures. Places like Boston could see morning wind chills dip to minus 10 to 15 degrees for multiple mornings in a row.

  • N.J. weather: Up to 6 inches of snow in forecast for weekend winter storm

A winter storm expected to hit New Jersey on Sunday could dump up 4 to 6 inches of snow across nearly half the state ahead of dangerously cold temperatures next week.

“The greatest potential for significant accumulations remains for areas along the I-95 corridor and points north and west,” the National Weather Service said in its Friday morning forecast discussion.

Forecasters say the track and strength of the storm could still shift with conflicting predictions from weather models.

“Forecast guidance still varies significantly, considering it`s only 48-60 hours away,” the weather service said.

For counties south and east of the I-95 corridor, 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected. Snow total forecasts drop to 1 to 2 inches closer to the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay.

Snow could start falling as early as Sunday morning and continue through the evening with rates as high as 1 inch per hour, the weather service said.

  • More mild conditions with rain and snow chances this weekend ahead of Arctic air next week

    KDKA-TV Morning Forecast (1/17)

    KDKA-TV Morning Forecast (1/17)

    03:11

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The snow from yesterday’s clipper system has ended for the most part early Friday morning. Cloudy skies and a few flurries linger across the region. For the most part, snow totals were around what we anticipated, with most locations in the Pittsburgh metro area receiving 1-3 inches, including the airport which received 1.7 inches. There were a few isolated higher 4-5 inch totals, but these were few and far between. Most reports coming out of the Laurel Highlands range between 4-6 inches and 1-3 inches also fell along the I-80 corridor as well.

Temperatures this morning are not as cold compared to previous days this week, thanks to a west to southwest wind at the surface. Expect highs to reach the lower to mid-30s in the afternoon. Some decrease in cloud coverage is possible later in the day. This brief “warm up” will last into Saturday ahead of a strong Arctic cold front. Moisture moving in ahead of the front will set us up for a light rain/snow mix beginning after sunrise Saturday lasting through the night. More snow is expected generally north of Pittsburgh, while precipitation will tend to mix with more rain south of Pittsburgh. The snow and rain should taper off Saturday evening after sunset, with partially clearing skies overnight. Clouds are expected to increase again on Sunday during the day, as another fast-moving trough aloft in the atmosphere passes by just to the southeast. This system, along with some low-level cold winds coming out of the northwest, will likely produce some light snow in the afternoon on Sunday, with minor accumulations possible in the Laurel Highlands and Ridges.

The coldest air of the season will gradually transfer into our region starting on Sunday. High temperatures will likely occur early in the day on Sunday and Monday before a slow downward trend each day. The peak of the cold looks to be Tuesday into Wednesday, with lows on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings well below zero. Wind chills will likely be in the -10 to -25 degree range across our area during this event. This is much closer to the range that is actually considered dangerous, and frostbite can occur within 30 minutes on exposed skin, so take precautions and cover up well when going outside. The coldest morning will likely be Wednesday as high pressure settles into the region, before warmer winds from the southwest bring an end to the cold spell by the end of next week.

As we head into the weekend, we can expect more mild conditions with a mix of rain and snow chances in the forecast. While temperatures may not be as cold as we’ve seen in recent weeks, there is still a chance for some wintry precipitation to make an appearance.

As we move into next week, however, a blast of Arctic air is expected to move in, bringing with it much colder temperatures and the potential for more widespread snowfall. It’s important to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions.

In the meantime, enjoy the relatively milder weather this weekend, but be sure to keep an eye on the sky for any precipitation that may be headed our way. Stay safe and stay warm as we head into the winter season!

  • Sunny & cool Friday; Dodging some weekend raindrops

We’ll enjoy a sunny close to the workweek with low 30s at sunrise climbing to around 50 degrees Friday afternoon with a light north breeze.

Scattered morning showers on Saturday will give way to some afternoon sunshine. Clouds rebuild on Sunday with a some hit and miss showers through the day. Weekend highs will lift into the low to mid 50s before much colder air arrives late day Sunday.

For the Martin Luther King holiday Monday, scheduled events will be fine, but frigid air will be moving in on gusty north winds. Highs will only reach the mid 30s, with wind chills in the teens and 20s. An Arctic blast of air will settle in Monday through Thursday with highs struggling to get above freezing through Thursday. Overnight lows will tumble into the mid teens, with wind chills dipping into the single digits at times. The prolonged period of sub freezing temps will put a serious test on any outdoor exposed pipes. Make sure they’re well insulated and keep your pets inside.

As far as snow chances next week, there is still much uncertainty. The air will certainly be cold enough, but the presence of a snow producing storm is still in question. The main storm track looks like it will be running a little south of us through mid week, but that will have to be watched closely for potential shifts. Right now the best chance for some snowflakes is trending towards Tuesday night, but there is still much uncertainty on the storm track and associated snow risk…stay tuned for updates.

Happy Friday, everyone! The sun is shining brightly and the temperatures are cool, making for a perfect start to the weekend. However, it looks like we may have to dodge some raindrops as we head into the weekend.

Don’t let the impending showers dampen your spirits though! Use this time to cozy up with a good book, binge-watch your favorite TV show, or simply enjoy the sound of raindrops hitting the window.

Remember to stay safe and dry if you have any outdoor plans this weekend. And who knows, maybe a little rain will bring some much-needed relaxation and rejuvenation.

Wishing you all a sunny and cool Friday, and a weekend filled with rainbows after the rain! #TGIF #WeekendWeather #RainyDaysAhead

  • Weekend storm brings Triad rain, snow for some

WATCH: Weekend storm brings Triad rain, snow for some

Meteorologist Brian Slocum & Dylan Hudler have your frigid forecast

EITHER. YEAH, DEFINITELY. WELL, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT. DALE AND I ARE HERE TO EDUCATE YOU ALL ABOUT WHAT’S GOING TO UNFOLD HERE THE LAST COUPLE, NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. SO LET’S START WITH THAT. I’M GOING TO START WITH A LITTLE BIT OF A SUMMARY OF HOW WE EXPECT THINGS TO GO INTO NEXT WEEK, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. WE’RE GOING TO START WITH SOME. RAIN WILL LIKELY BE A BIT WINTRY NORTH AND WEST. THE TRIAD COULD SEE SOME WET WEATHER ALSO EARLY IN THE DAY ON SUNDAY. WE’RE EXPECTING VERY COLD TEMPERATURES THAT WILL LIKELY STAY. KEEP OUR NUMBERS BELOW FREEZING FOR SEVERAL DAYS NEXT WEEK, AND A POSSIBILITY THAT SOME MOISTURE COULD MAKE THINGS A LITTLE INTERESTING AROUND HERE. AROUND THE MIDDLE PART OF NEXT WEEK. AND DYLAN’S GOING TO TAKE YOU THROUGH THAT PART OF THE FORECAST. TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW, 20S AND 30S. IT’S COLD, BUT IT’S AN IMPROVEMENT OVER WHERE WE WERE YESTERDAY. TEMPERATURES ARE UP SOMEWHERE BETWEEN EIGHT AND 15 DEGREES FROM WHERE WE WERE 24 HOURS AGO. I LIKE IMPROVEMENTS IN THAT DEPARTMENT. WE’VE GOT A MILDER FLOW OF AIR COMING AROUND A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE WEEK ONE, BUT IT’S BUILDING ACROSS THE SOUTH. WE’RE GOING TO SEE SOME LIGHTER BREEZES TODAY, AND PART OF THE STORM THAT’S GOING TO IMPACT US OVER THE WEEKEND IS BEGINNING TO TAKE SHAPE, WITH SOME MOISTURE COMING OFF THE PACIFIC THAT’S MOVING INTO TEXAS. WE’RE WAITING FOR AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE TO DEVELOP JUST EAST OF THE ROCKIES. TRAILING. THAT IS VERY COLD AIR. THE CIRCULATION AROUND EASTERN CANADA IS GOING TO PUSH THIS SOUTH VERY, VERY QUICKLY. AND THIS IS GOING TO SET UP THE DEEP FREEZE ACROSS THE SOUTH AND MAKE ANYTHING THAT DEVELOPS FROM A STORM PERSPECTIVE. VERY INTERESTING. ACROSS THE SOUTHERN STATES. THAT’S DOWN THE ROAD THOUGH. TODAY IS A SUNNY DAY AND PROBABLY THE BEST DAY WE’RE GOING TO SEE FOR A WHILE. LIGHT BREEZES OUT OF THE SOUTH HIGH, CLOSE TO 50 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON. WILL BE CLOSE TO THAT. ALSO IN THE FOOTHILLS, HIGH OF AROUND 49 DEGREES TODAY. SUNSHINE GIVES WAY TO SOME EVENING CLOUDS TONIGHT AS THAT STORM TAKES SHAPE AND BEGINS TO MOVE OUR WAY. EVEN MOUNTAIN TEMPERATURES GET BACK INTO THE 40S TODAY, AND THEN WE’LL SEE CONDITIONS GET A LITTLE COOLER LATER ON TONIGHT AND COULD GET A LITTLE SLIPPERY OUT THERE OVERNIGHT. HERE’S THE REASON WHY CLOUDS ARRIVE. FIRST, TEMPERATURES FALL INTO THE 30S. NOTICE, THOUGH, FOR THE TRIAD, THEY STAY ABOVE FREEZING. WE HAVEN’T HAD MANY DAYS LIKE THIS IN JANUARY, WHERE MORNING LOWS ARE ARE NEAR THE FREEZING MARK, MID TO UPPER 30S IN SOME CASES, BUT IT’S COLD ENOUGH WHERE WE COULD SEE A WINTRY MIX FAVORING SNOW ACROSS OUR NORTHERN WESTERN AREAS DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. I THINK BY THE TIME YOU WAKE UP TOMORROW MORNING, RAIN WILL BE OVER, THE AREA. IT SHOULD BE RELATIVELY BRIEF, MOVING OUT AROUND MIDDAY AND THEN WE SHOULD GET A PRETTY DECENT LULL COMING INTO THE AREA, AND THEN WE’LL START TO SEE MORE SHOWERS DEVELOPING LATE SATURDAY NIGHT OR EARLY SUNDAY. BUT NOTICE WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE AGAIN, WHERE WE’RE WARM, RELATIVELY SPEAKING, IN THE UPPER 30S AND LOWER 40S. NOW, AS THE COLD AIR RACES IN AND BEGINS TO INTERACT WITH THAT EXITING MOISTURE, THERE’S A CHANCE THAT WE COULD SEE A POP OF SNOW AT THE VERY END OF THIS. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT THE TYPE OF SETUP THAT NORMALLY BRINGS US A GOOD SNOW. IT’S USUALLY AS THE MOISTURE IS LEAVING, YOU SEE A BRIEF TRANSITION, BUT I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT AS WE HEAD INTO SUNDAY, THERE’S A CHANCE THAT WE MIGHT GET A LIGHT COATING OF SNOW IN SOME OF THE GRASSY SURFACES, ESPECIALLY. I DON’T THINK THIS INITIALLY AFFECTS ROADS, BUT WE’LL HAVE TO WATCH HOW HOW QUICKLY TEMPERATURES COOL DOWN AND JUST HOW WET THINGS ARE HEADING INTO SUNDAY EVENING. SO FOR THE MOUNTAINS, WE’VE GOT SNOWY WEATHER DEVELOPING OR A SNOWY MIX. AT LEAST THAT WINTRY MIX TRANSITIONS TO RAIN ON SATURDAY. THEN WE’LL LIKELY SEE MORE MIX, FAVORING A LITTLE MORE SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS. FOR THE TRIAD, IT’S MOSTLY A RAIN EVENT WITH A LULL DURING THE DAY ON SATURDAY THAT COULD BRIEFLY CHANGE OVER TO RAIN OR SNOW, AND THEN IT GETS COLD. IN FACT, WE COULD SET RECORDS NEXT WEEK FOR THE COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURES WE’VE SEEN FOR AT LEAST TWO DAYS. NEXT WEEK, LET’S BRING IN METEOROLOGIST DYLAN HUDLER. DYLAN, THAT’S NOT THE ONLY THING WE’RE WATCHING FOR NEXT WEEK. IF WE GET A STORM DEVELOP THAT DEVELOPS IN THIS MUCH COLDER AIR, THIS COULD REALLY HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE TRIAD. YEAH. THIS IS THIS IS A VERY, VERY COLD ARCTIC AIR MASS, TO SAY THE LEAST. THIS WILL BE SOME OF THE COLDEST AIR WE’VE HAD IN YEARS. REALLY. WE’RE FORECASTING AFTERNOON HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 20S FOR THREE DAYS STRAIGHT. TEMPERATURES COULD STAY BELOW FREEZING FOR LIKE 72 CONSECUTIVE HOURS. MONDAY, TUESDAY AND EVEN INTO WEDNESDAY AS WELL. SO THERE ARE SOME THINGS WE KNOW ABOUT NEXT WEEK, AND THERE’S STILL SOME UNANSWERED QUESTIONS. WE HAVE. WE KNOW IT’S GOING TO BE COLD. WHAT WE DON’T KNOW IS WHETHER OR NOT A STORM SYSTEM CAN LINE UP WITH THAT COLD AIR, AND WHETHER OR NOT WE’LL HAVE ENOUGH MOISTURE TO PRODUCE SOME WINTRY WEATHER WITH THIS KIND OF COLD AIR SET UP, THAT STORM TRACK LOOKS TO MAINLY BE THROUGH THE DEEP SOUTH, MAINLY ALONG THE GULF COAST AND THEN UP THE EAST COAST. SO CALL ME CRAZY, BUT IT ALMOST SEEMS LIKE WILMINGTON HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF WINTRY WEATHER NEXT WEEK THAN THE TRIAD, WHICH IS USUALLY NOT THE CASE. THIS IS A SETUP WE HAVEN’T SEEN IN QUITE SOME TIME. THERE ARE DIFFERENT LONG RANGE MODEL SOLUTIONS OF HOW THIS WILL ALL PLAY OUT. WE KNOW THIS SYSTEM IS COMING THROUGH. THIS WEEKEND WILL GIVE US A BRIEF CHANCE OF SOME WINTRY WEATHER, BUT IT’S REALLY NEXT WEEK WHEN THAT BIG TIME COLD AIR IS IN PLACE WHERE IF ENOUGH MOISTURE CAN LINE UP, THERE COULD BE SOME WINTRY WEATHER IN PARTS OF THE CAROLINAS. HERE, LOCALLY IN THE TRIAD, I THINK AS OF THE PAST 24 HOURS OR SO, OUR CHANCE OF WINTER WEATHER NEXT WEEK MAY BE DECREASING JUST A BIT. THAT STORM TRACK LOOKS TO STAY FURTHER SOUTH AND EAST, MAINLY ALONG THE COAST, WITH THE REST OF US DRY. BUT FOR RIGHT NOW, THERE’S AT LEAST THE POTENTIAL FOR MAYBE A WINTRY SYSTEM. REGARDLESS, OUR MESSAGING IS COLD. PREPARE YOUR HOME THIS WEEKEND FOR VERY, VERY COL

Friday’s weather will be the best we’ll see for awhile. A storm brings rain and some limited snow this weekend. Here’s the latest.

Over the weekend, the Triad region experienced a mixed bag of weather as a storm system moved through the area. While some areas saw heavy rain, others were treated to a dusting of snow.

The rain started on Saturday and continued through Sunday, bringing much-needed precipitation to the region. Some areas reported over an inch of rain, which helped alleviate dry conditions and replenish water supplies.

In higher elevations, the rain turned to snow, creating a winter wonderland for residents. While the snowfall was not significant, it was a welcome sight for many who have been missing the winter weather this season.

Overall, the weekend storm brought a variety of weather to the Triad, from rain to snow and everything in between. It was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Mother Nature and the importance of being prepared for whatever weather may come our way.
