Notre Dame football team welcomed home by fans after national championship game
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The Fighting Irish returned home on Tuesday one win shy of a national championship, but still number one in the hearts of fans.
Seldom has there been a better excuse not to show up. The cold weather was brutal.
Then again, there was a pretty strong reason to make the trip — to mark a truly remarkable season.
Their heartfelt cheers probably never reached the ears of their intended recipients thanks to a motorcade complete with lights and sirens.
Then again, maybe the message got through just the same.
“Got out of work for a half hour to come out and say hi to the team. They gave us such an amazing season and we wanted to thank them,” said one couple. “We were Notre Dame students, we were freshmen at Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s in 1988 the last time they won the national championship, so it was exciting to see how far they went this year.”
Perhaps never before has such a warm welcome come in such a cold environment.
“Just to give them support,” said one fan. “I watched some interviews last night of the players. They seemed pretty down, so trying to lift them up a little bit.”
Quite a few spectators were shuttling back and forth to their vehicles to keep warm.
“I’ve met them the last three times they came back, this will be the third,” said another fan. “I came back from Georgia and then came back from beating Penn State. So, figured I better come today. This is the coldest day, though.”

New Year in Waterloo Region welcomed by heavy snow
A winter weather travel advisory is in effect for Waterloo Region Thursday.
This comes after a snow squall warning was issued Wednesday night bringing around 12 cm of snow to some areas of Kitchener by midnight.
The weather warning was replaced by a winter weather travel advisory Thursday by Environment Canada, calling for an additional 5-10 cm of snow by late Thursday.
The advisory from the weather authority reads, “The lake effect snow is expected to gradually weaken (Thursday) afternoon. Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”
The advisory also advises postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.
An additional 2-4 cm of snow is expected Friday and Saturday.
As the clock struck midnight on December 31st, residents of Waterloo Region were greeted with heavy snowfall to ring in the new year. The fluffy white flakes blanketed the streets, creating a winter wonderland that added a magical touch to the festive celebrations.Families gathered around crackling bonfires, sipping hot cocoa and roasting marshmallows as the snow fell gently around them. Children gleefully built snowmen and had epic snowball fights, while couples strolled hand in hand through the winter wonderland.

Surprise! Marina Squerciati is a mom again.
The Chicago P.D. star, 40, announced on Instagram that she welcomed her second baby with husband Eli Kay-Oliphant in 2024. In the post, Squerciati shared a Polaroid of herself pregnant while vacationing at The Miami Beach EDITION in Florida. In the photo, she showed off her bump while wearing a pink bikini and a floppy hat.
She also included a photo of a drawing her older daughter did, which showed herself, her daughter and Kay-Oliphant on what appeared to be a stage. “2024 was a BIG year for me, literally. I thought I handled being a pregnant working mom with grace—swipe to see my daughter’s very different take,” Squerciati wrote.

Squerciati and Kay-Oliphant welcomed their first child, a daughter whose name they haven’t shared publicly, in May 2017.
Earlier in December, Squerciati shared a photo of herself and her daughter on Instagram as they attended the Broadway show & Juliet, wearing wigs and sparkly outfits.
“& Juliet. We don’t need no stinkin’ Romeo. @broadwayinchicago,” Squerciati wrote in her caption. “Also I barely made it from work! We slapped on the wigs in the elevator, I ate my dinner on the El Platform, and we had to sprint a few blocks! (Just wanted to give you the reality behind the IG photos .)”
Just before the election, Squerciati shared another photo on her Instagram featuring the actress and her daughter posing in front of a mailbox and holding her ballot before sending it along. Her daughter could be seen wearing sunglasses and a white dress, holding one end of the envelope.
“Vote early, but make it fashion. @voteearlyday,” she wrote in her caption.
