  • Warriors News: Steph Curry second amongst West guards in latest All-Star voting returns

    In today’s Dub Hub:

The Golden State Warriors are set to host the 2024-25 NBA All-Star Game next month on February 16th. Warriors’ point guard Stephen Curry is the major draw for fans coming to the game and according to the latest NBA All-Star fan voting returns, Curry is currently slated to be a starter, ranking second amongst Western Conference guards with 1,793,150 votes.

Curry trails Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who leads all Western Conference guards with 2,405,404 votes after the third round of returns. Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokić paces the Western Conference frontcourt with 2,924,436 votes, while Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo tops all players with 3,489,956 votes.

Curry remains the heart and soul of the Warriors. The 36-year-old is leading the team in scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game in 32 games this season. His sharpshooting remains elite as he’s hitting 41.6% of his three-point attempts while leading the league with 4.4 threes made per game.

Fans have until next Monday to cast their votes, with ballots submitted on Friday and Monday counting three times as much. The All-Star starters will be announced next Thursday on TNT.

For more on this and other news around the NBA, here is our latest news round-up for Friday, January 17th:

But Gilgeous-Alexander increased his lead over Curry from 441,685 votes to 612,254 votes. Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić, out due to a calf injury, is in third place behind Curry.

Warriors wing Andrew Wiggins still is in eighth place among Western Conference forwards, earning 410,011 votes on the latest round of balloting.

Fan ballots make up 50 percent of the voting to determine NBA All-Star Game starters, with player vote and media vote each making up 25 percent.

Warriors must realize current youngsters nothing like championship past | NBC Sports Bay Area

This Warriors roster has no “next” Curry. No “next” Draymond. No “next” Klay Thompson. And certainly no “next” Kevin Durant. That quartet, with capable assistance from such culture-altering vets as Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston, built a monument.

Five consecutive trips to the NBA Finals represent a mythical achievement; no team had done in more than 50 years. Four championships in eight seasons? Only one other team has ever done it.

None of the youngsters on the Golden State’s roster has established himself as someone around whom championships can be built. Each, including Kuminga and Moody, in their fourth seasons, has questions yet to be answered about their true ceiling.

NBA Intel: Warriors, Bucks, Suns, Hornets, more | Hoops Hype

The Warriors have continued their due diligence on the trade market and inquired about potential frontcourt upgrades, including Nikola Vucevic, John Collins, Jonas Valanciunas, and Robert Williams, league sources told HoopsHype. Conversely, the chances of Golden State acquiring previously reported wing targets such as Jimmy Butler and Cam Johnson have decreased, sources said.

Kawakami: Why missing the playoffs might not be so bad for the Warriors | The San Francisco Standard

As it stands now, the Warriors are sitting in the 13th slot in next June’s draft but with a real shot to end up in the top 10. The team in the No. 9 slot before the lottery has a 4.5% chance to win the No. 1 pick (and potential superstar Cooper Flagg), a 4.8% shot at No. 2, a 5.2% chance at No. 3 and 5.7% at No. 4. That’s 20.2% to get one of those four picks — in a draft that seems to offer a chance at a star at least through the fifth or sixth selection.

If the Warriors end up in the eighth slot going into the lottery, they’d have a better than 25% chance at one of the top-four picks and a 6% at No. 1. And the higher the pick ends up, the more value it’ll have on the trade market.

How the Thunder defense — ‘guys that do the little work’ — continues to overwhelm | The Athletic

With the Oklahoma City Thunder reaching the halfway point of one of the great regular seasons in NBA history, it’s only natural that they compare themselves to majestic creatures.

“The world is seeing all of the, what we call the cockroaches in our locker room, the cockroaches and hyenas,” said Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was masterful in gliding his way to 40 points in three quarters of Thursday’s 134-114 statement win against the Cleveland Cavaliers. “The guys that do the little work, that don’t get the most plays, that don’t average 30, but their part of our season, our winning, is just as big.

“I’m glad people got to see that, that we’re not just one or two guys; we’re 15 guys.”

Inside the simmering feud between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat — and why it’s about to boil | ESPN

While Heat sources say they expect Butler to return Friday against the Nuggets and are fully prepared for him to play, there remains a palpable dread at what he might do and the environment the ongoing chaos might create. “I don’t know how he can come back to this locker room,” one source close to the team said. Another said, “We don’t want him back.”

If history — like, say, in Minnesota in 2018 — serves as precedent, the discomfort could deepen, quickly.

“Jimmy hasn’t even really started,” one source close to Butler said.

    NBA L2M: Warriors vs. Timberwolves

In all, the league found 15 instances to review in those two minutes, but deemed all such instances correct calls or correct non-calls. The final timeout, which was initially granted at 0.8 seconds (though the clock expired before things were sorted out), was explained as “Golden State signals for and is awarded a timeout prior to the expiration of the game clock. After communicating with the Replay Center, the game clock is reset to 00:01.0.”

Always good to avoid controversy … especially when you win.

In the latest All-Star voting returns, Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry has emerged as the second-highest vote-getter among Western Conference guards. Curry, a two-time NBA MVP and six-time All-Star, has been putting up impressive numbers this season, averaging over 30 points per game and leading the league in three-point shooting.

Curry’s stellar play has not gone unnoticed by fans, who have shown their support by voting him into one of the starting guard spots for the All-Star game. With only a few weeks left in the voting process, Curry will look to maintain his position and earn his seventh All-Star selection.

In addition to Curry, his Warriors teammate Draymond Green is also making a strong case for an All-Star nod, as he currently ranks third among Western Conference frontcourt players in voting. Green, known for his defensive prowess and playmaking ability, has been a key contributor for the Warriors this season and has helped lead the team to the top of the Western Conference standings.

As the All-Star game approaches, Warriors fans will be eagerly awaiting the final voting results to see if Curry and Green will be selected to represent the team in the prestigious event. Stay tuned for more updates on the Warriors’ All-Star contenders and their chances of making the roster.

With subzero temps and additional snowfall expected, many districts in West Michigan are closed Monday.

MICHIGAN, USA — Many schools in West Michigan have canceled classes for Monday due to subzero temperatures and snow.

Lake-effect snow began at the lakeshore on Sunday. Additional lake-effect snow is expected to push further inland on Monday as westerly winds strengthen. This could bring up to a foot of snow to some localized areas.

Temperatures will struggle to rise above the single digits. With wind gusts expected to reach up to 30 mph, it will feel below zero throughout the day. These temperatures can quickly become dangerous.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday. Banks, post offices and some shipping services will pause operations for the day.

You can see our full up-to-date list of closures at wzzm13.com/closings.

  • Deitz looks to emerging stars in ground-breaking West Indies-Bangladesh series

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A new chapter in Caribbean cricket history is set to unfold as the West Indies Women’s cricket team gears up to host Bangladesh in their inaugural bilateral white-ball series on Caribbean soil.

Scheduled from January 19 to 31 at Warner Park, St. Kitts, the tour promises to showcase emerging talent, refine strategies, and build momentum for critical upcoming ICC tournaments.

Head coach Shane Deitz, brimming with anticipation, emphasized the significance of this historic series as a platform for both individual brilliance and team cohesion.

    A historic showdown

This ground-breaking series comprises three CG United One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is). It not only marks the first bilateral clash between the West Indies Women and Bangladesh but also heralds Bangladesh’s maiden white-ball tour of the Caribbean.

Speaking about the series, Deitz highlighted its importance as a springboard for the team’s future. “It’s crucial to get some combinations going. A few players are playing for positions too, so we need them to put their hands up. There are great opportunities for players here,” he said.

Both sides see the series as pivotal preparation for upcoming ICC events, with high-pressure situations demanding sharpness and adaptability.

    A spotlight on emerging talent

Deitz expressed confidence in the young talents eager to cement their spots in the squad. Players like Cherry Ann Fraser, Nerissa Crafton, and Shabika Gajnabi are among those expected to make their mark. “This series offers the perfect stage for players to step up and show what they can do under pressure,” he remarked.

Reflecting on the team’s recent tour of India, Deitz acknowledged the challenges faced and identified key areas for improvement. “We struggled a bit in India, especially during the powerplays, both with bat and ball,” he noted. “That’s a big focus for us in this series. We want to get off to a good start and drive the game from there.”

He further emphasized the need for robust combinations, stating, “Performing well under pressure and building consistency with bat and ball is essential. This series is an opportunity to bounce back and set a strong foundation for the qualifiers.”

    High stakes and high hopes

As the first ball of this historic series nears, both teams are poised to deliver thrilling performances. For the West Indies Women, the stakes are particularly high as they seek to not only reclaim momentum but also build a versatile and competitive squad capable of excelling on the global stage.

In a thrilling and ground-breaking West Indies-Bangladesh series, coach Deitz is looking to the emerging stars to make their mark on the international stage. With both teams showcasing their young talent and promising players, this series is sure to be a showcase of the future of cricket.

Deitz has been impressed with the performances of young players from both sides, highlighting the potential they have to become key players in the future. With the series being closely contested, every match is an opportunity for these emerging stars to prove themselves and stake their claim in the international arena.

The West Indies-Bangladesh series is not only a platform for the established players to shine, but also a chance for the young talent to showcase their skills and make a name for themselves. With Deitz keeping a close eye on the emerging stars, fans can expect an exciting and competitive series filled with talent and potential.

  • Iowa State vs West Virginia recap: Cyclones’ win streak snapped

    6:02 pm CT January 18, 2025

    FINAL: 64-57 West Virginia

    Gus Martin

Credit to Javon Small and WVU for stepping up every time they were tested.

But that was a poor offensive game for Iowa State. It happens to even great teams, but without Milan Momcilovic’s shooting, the Cyclones looked a bit lost when no one’s shot was falling today.

    5:58 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H2 33.0, 59-53 WVU — Small with the 3

    Gus Martin

As he’s done all night, Javon Small has killed Iowa State and just hit the likely dagger on a huge stepback triple.

He has 23 points and has electrified this crowd.

Just too many missed opportunities for Iowa State tonight.

    5:53 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H2 1:39, 53-49 WVU — Cyclones in trouble

    Gus Martin

Gilbert had a strong drive and layup to tie the game 49-49, but WVU came right back with a difficult shot of its own to retake the lead.

A Lipsey miss then led to a Mountaineers and-1 by Small. He still has to shoot the free throw.

This is not looking good for ISU.

    5:47 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H2 4:14, 49-47 WVU — Time’s running out for Iowa State

    Gus Martin

A 10-2 run gave the Mountaineers some cushion, and they made four straight shot attempts.

Iowa State just can’t string anything together to shift this game’s momentum in its favor. When the Cyclones manage to score, the Mountaineers seem to always have an answer.

Time is running out to go on a run.

    5:42 pm CT January 18, 2025

Check our photo gallery from this game

    Gus Martin

    5:34 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H2 8:00, 41-39 ISU — Offenses wake up

    Gus Martin

Both teams were scoreless for almost 3 minutes until Jones ended the drought, which WVU followed with a game-tying triple to make it 37-37.

The teams then traded blows until the stoppage.

Nice to see some action after an extremely slow offensive display for much of this one.

Javon Small for WVU is also a really fun player who has made some crazy shots. He has 11 points.

    5:23 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H2 11:25, 35-34 ISU — Offenses stall

    Gus Martin

WVU hasn’t score in almost 2.5 minutes, and Iowa State is also struggling to get any clean looks.

This has been a pretty ugly game to watch, but the Cyclones have proven capable of winning in different ways this season.

    5:17 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H2 13:06, 35-34 ISU — A 3 finally falls

    Gus Martin

ISU briefly regained the lead, 32-31, and then re-took advantage when Jones finally made Iowa State’s first triple of the game (1-for-14).

That was a long time coming. Let’s see if that opens anything up for Jones or others with shooting. He leads all scorers with 14 points.

    5:11 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H2 15:39, 31-28 WVU — More of the same

    Gus Martin

The offensive struggles continue for ISU to start the second half, still unable to get a triple to fall.

Interesting note: there have only been seven combined free throw attempts in this game. The referees are letting these guys play, but maybe Iowa State should be more aggressive in trying to draw some contact.

Making free throws can sometimes help shoots find a rhythm.

    5:02 pm CT January 18, 2025

    The second half is underway!

    Gus Martin

The action is back in Morgantown. Let’s see if Iowa State can improve its offense.

    4:48 pm CT January 18, 2025

Halftime: 25-24 WVU — Cyclones need a reset

    Gus Martin

Iowa State played a good defensive half until the final few minutes.

Offensively, it was mostly ugly outside of Jones creating his own shot. The Cyclones need to either find their long-range shooting stroke, be more crisp in their offensive sets or push the pace in transition.

Still, only down one on the road after a subpar 20 minutes isn’t the worst situation to be in.

    4:45 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H1 43.7, 25-24 WVU — Mountaineers get hot

    Gus Martin

Just like that, after struggling to score for the first 15 minutes of this game, WVU scores 13 in a flash to take the lead.

Nice tough layup by Keshon Gilbert, though, to stop the run.

Iowa State needs to right the ship.

    4:38 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H1 2:25, 21-20 ISU — WVU surges

    Gus Martin

A quick 8-2 run by WVU forces Otzelberger to call a timeout. Smart move as the home crowd finally woke up.

The Mountaineers got a couple triples to fall, with some bad luck for ISU. Iowa State is not playing well overall and still has a lead on the road right now.

But the Cyclones need to shape up soon.

    4:35 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H1 4:23, 19-12 ISU — Cyclones in control

    Gus Martin

Iowa State still hasn’t made a 3-pointer, and not for a lack of trying (0-for-11), and the Cyclones have been sloppy with seven turnovers.

And yet, they are in complete control of this game. WVU can’t seem to get an open shot, and Curtis Jones is a certified bucket (9 points).

If ISU starts hitting jumpers, they might blow this game open.

    4:26 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H1 7:48, 15-9 ISU — Smothering defense

    Gus Martin

Iowa State has held WVU scoreless for nearly five minutes of game time. Just a defensive clinic so far in this first half.

Nice lineup choice by Otzelberger to go big with Jackson and Jefferson. The Mountaineers haven’t been able to get shots at the rim at all.

    4:19 pm CT January 18, 2025

    H1 10:52, 11-9 ISU — Cyclones stay steady

    Gus Martin

Iowa State was on a 10-0 run before WVU took the lid off the basket.

Curtis Jones has certainly been active to start, already with five points and four rebounds.

Still, the Cyclones are 0-of-6 from behind the arc.

    4:12 pm CT January 18, 2025

    1H/13:58- Iowa State 6, West Virginia 6

    Will Kennedy

The Mountaineers struck first, going out on a 6-0 run as the Cyclones struggled to get shots. But Iowa State has pushed right back with a 6-0 run of their own to tie things up early on.

WVU shooting just 27% from the field while Iowa State is hitting 43% of its shots. Both teams are 0-for-3 from beyond the arc.

    4:02 pm CT January 18, 2025

    The game is underway!

    Gus Martin

The teams have tipped off. Should be a good one.

  • Confirmed Chelsea line-up v West Ham | News | Official Site

Erin Cuthbert is set to make her 250th Chelsea appearance as Sonia Bompastor makes three changes to the starting XI for this afternoon’s Women’s Super League clash against West Ham.

The Blues are in league action for the first time in 2025 at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, facing the Hammers.

A fourth-round FA Cup win against Charlton Athletic saw Bompastor’s side kickstart the second half of the season last weekend, extending our unbeaten run to 17 games, and we will be looking to continue that fine form upon our return to the WSL.

Introduced to the starting line-up from the win against Charlton are Sjoeke Nusken, Niamh Charles and Aggie Beever-Jones, with the latter two scoring after coming off the bench in last Sunday’s FA Cup clash.

Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton retains her place between the sticks and will be protected by a defence of Lucy Bronze, captain Millie Bright, Nathalie Bjorn and Charles. Nusken lines up alongside Cuthbert in midfield, who is making her 250th appearance for the Blues.

Sandy Baltimore, Catarina Macario, Mayra Ramirez, and Beever-Jones will make up our attacking forces against the Hammers.

Chelsea XI: Hampton; Bronze, Bright, Bjorn, Charles; Nusken, Cuthbert; Baltimore, Macario, Beever-Jones; Ramirez

Chelsea substitutes: Musovic, Lawrence, Perisset, Bernabe, Mpome, Jean-Francois, Reiten, Rytting Kaneryd, Hamano
